  • Objective Fear-avoidance and endurance behavior are well-established maladaptive coping styles in several chronic health conditions. There is also emerging evidence that both fear-avoidance and endurance coping are associated with poor outcome from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current study sought to characterize the early trajectories of avoidance and endurance behavior and confirm their association with disability outcomes. Method Adults with mTBI (N = 88) completed measures of avoidance, endurance, and postconcussive symptoms at clinic intake (M = 40.2 days since injury). Avoidance and endurance measures were readministered 1 month later (N = 79), and a measure of perceived functional disability (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0) was completed 3 months after clinic intake (N = 69). Results Avoidance and endurance coping were weakly positively correlated with each other at intake (r = .28) and at 1 month postintake (r = .28). Change scores on these two measures over time were not significantly correlated (r = .04). Avoidance coping tended to decrease over time (95% CI [0.6, 2.5]; p = .002), whereas changes in endurance coping were variable. In generalized linear modeling, higher avoidance and endurance at clinic intake and increasing (or less rapidly decreasing) levels of these coping styles over 1 month was associated with greater perceived disability ratings at 3 months, even after controlling for postconcussion symptom severity at intake. Conclusion These findings suggest that avoidance and endurance behavior are distinct coping styles with unique trajectories during the subacute recovery period. The results also support the need for psychologically informed early interventions that target specific profiles of maladaptive coping to mitigate risk for poor outcomes post-mTBI. However, no studies have examined how acculturation may influence the relationship between coping and PTSD in Hispanic 9/11 responders. This novel study is the first to examine differences in coping and PTSD among Hispanic responders by level of acculturation. Methods The sample is composed of 845 Hispanic 9/11 responders who were seen at the World Trade Center Health Program and participated in a web-based survey. Using logistic and multiple linear regression, we examined how acculturation is related to their coping strategies and risk for PTSD. We also tested for interaction to examine whether level of acculturation moderated the relationship between coping and PTSD symptom severity. Results Key findings revealed that higher acculturation is associated with the use of substances, venting, and humor to cope, while lower acculturation is associated with the use of active coping and self-distraction in this sample. This study assessed trauma exposure inside and outside of fire service, diagnosed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated disorders using clinical interviews and self-report measures, then tested the hypothesis that trauma exposure would predict distress in firefighters over the first 3 years in service. Method In total, 322 professional firefighter recruits were assessed during academy training and through their first 3 years of service. Diagnostic assessments were conducted by psychologists annually, and symptom checklists were completed by telephone every 4 months. Results Firefighter recruits were exposed to approximately nine potentially traumatic events (PTEs) in the first 3 years of fire service, with 66% of these events occurring in the line of duty. Very few (3%) developed diagnoses of PTSD, major depression, or generalized anxiety disorder. Models of distress supported a trait model of distress. Distress was stable within individuals over time, and although those reporting more distress also reported more trauma exposure, variation in distress over time was not predicted by trauma exposure. Conclusions Professional firefighters experience frequent exposure to potentially traumatic events during their early careers. This exposure, although large, does not result in a large proportion of mental health diagnoses. Distress was consistent and low, which provides evidence of the resilient nature of those selecting a career in emergency service. Future work is needed to understand the disconnection between the current rigorously collected prospective data and the existing literature regarding the increased risk of PTSD and associated disorders in fire service. One group significantly affected both educationally and psychosocially is college students, as they experienced an abrupt cancellation of in-person courses, were forced to leave their dormitories, and witnessed a loss of social activities. Method This study utilizes survey data from college students in the throes of COVID-19-based home schooling collected for a Belgium-based international study including more than 134,000 participants from 28 countries around the world. Two hundred fifty-seven college students from a U.S. university participated in this study. Results Results indicate that college students are affected by COVID-19 on several levels, including fear of themselves or others in their social network contracting the virus, apprehension about the changes in coursework delivery and unclear instructional parameters, overall loneliness, compromised motivation, and sleep disturbances, as well as anxious and depressive symptoms.

  • BACKGROUND The meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of dissection and re-entry (DR) vs. wire escalation (WE) techniques on long-term clinical outcomes in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesions undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS Studies were searched in electronic databases from inception to September, 2019. Results were pooled using random effects model and fixed effects model and are presented as risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS Pooled analyses revealed that patients with DR techniques had overall higher complexity CTO lesions than patients with WE techniques and required a greater number of stents and a greater mean stent length. The "extensive" DR techniques may have a higher incidence of target vessel revascularization (TVR) (RR = 2.30, 95% CI 1.77-2.98), in-stent restenosis (RR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.30-2.23), in-stent reocclusion (RR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.03-3.3) and death/MI/TVR (RR = 2.10, 95% CI 1.71-2.58), when compared with WE techniques, during the long-term follow-up. However, "limited" DR techniques result in more promising outcomes, and are comparable to conventional WE techniques. CONCLUSIONS Dissection and re-entry techniques were associated with increased risk of long-term negative clinical events, especially "extensive" DR techniques. However, "limited" DR techniques resulted in good long-term outcomes, comparable to WE techniques.OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and its relationship with vascular risk factors among patients with congestive heart failure. DESIGN Population-based cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 584 consecutive patients admitted to a Rehabilitative Cardiology Unit. METHODS Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) decision tree analysis was used to build a predictive model. RESULTS The mean age (standard deviation; SD) of the study population was 68.1 years (SD 12.3), and 77.7% of the subjects were men. The overall prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in the cohort was 49.8%. Logistic regression analysis showed that age was a predictor of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (odds ratio (OR) 1.034; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.021-1.047, p  23.3 kg/m2, the latter showing more than twice the prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (43.2% vs 20%). CONCLUSION Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is extremely frequent among patients with congestive heart failure, with age and body mass index being the strongest predictors.BACKGROUND Mental well-being is fundamental for a good life. Very few studies have specifically focused on the predictors of different levels of mental well-being, but those that have suggest a different picture. This study aimed to compare socioeconomic and relational/recreational behaviour predictors of different levels of mental well-being as well as common mental disorders (CMDs). METHODS Data from 3508 adults aged 16+ years old from the Danish Mental Health and Well-Being Survey 2016 were linked to Danish national register-based data. Mental well-being was assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, and information on CMDs was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4). Regression analyses were conducted to estimate the predictors of low and high mental well-being compared to moderate mental well-being and also of CMDs. RESULTS Lower socioeconomic position (education, income and employment status) was associated with increased odds of low mental well-being and the presence of CMDs, but did not significantly predict high mental well-being. Relational/recreational behaviours (informal and formal social participation, social support and recreational activity) were associated with reduced odds of low mental well-being and CMDs, and also with increased odds of high mental well-being. CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic predictors of high mental well-being do not mirror those of low mental well-being and CMDs, whereas relational/recreational predictors of high mental well-being do mirror those of low mental well-being and CMDs. These findings have important implications for public mental health strategies. © The Author(s) 2020. The analysis was done on two different fused silica capillary columns furnishing different retention times for ethanol and both n-propanol and t-butanol were used as internal standards. The results were evaluated by linear regression using blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) as dependent or outcome variable and the concentrations in an alternative specimen as independent or predictor variable. The Pearson correlation coefficients were all statistically highly significant (p  less then  0.001); r = 0.94 (bile), r = 0.98 (CSF), r = 0.97 (VH), r = 0.92 (urine), r = 0.94 (lung fluid) and r = 0.96 pleural cavity effusions. When the regression model was used to predict femoral ****from the mean concentration in an alternative specimens the means and 95% prediction intervals were 1.12 ± 0.824 g/L (bile), 1.41 ± 0.546 g/L (CSF), 1.15 ± 0.42 g/L (VH), 1.29 ± 0.780 g/L (urine), 1.25 ± 0.772 g/L (lung fluid) and 0.68 ± 0.564 g/L (pleural cavity effusions).   • Biofilms can form in many industries, one of them is the food industry. The formation of biofilms in this industry could cause immense economic losses and endanger public health. Biofilms formation is mainly triggered by quorum sensing. Therefore, inhibition of quorum sensing could be an innovative approach to inhibit the formation of biofilms. One way to inhibit quorum sensing is by using anti-quorum sensing compounds. Actinomycetes are a group of bacteria that is acknowledged to produce these compounds.

    There were eight crude extracts of Actinomycetes isolates that showed promising anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum. The concentration of the crude extracts was 20 mg/mL. All the crude extracts showed no antibacterial activity against food spoilage bacteria, except for crude extracts of isolate 18 PM that showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis. They also showed various antibiofilm activity, both inhibition and destruction. The highest inhibition and destruction activity sequentially was done by crude extracts of isolate 12 AC with 89.60% against Bacillus cereus and crude extracts of isolate SW03 with 93.06% against Shewanella putrefaciens.

    Hypercholesterolemia has posed a serious threat of heart diseases and stroke worldwide. Xanthine oxidase (XO), the rate-limiting enzyme in uric acid biosynthesis, is regarded as the root of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that generate atherosclerosis and cholesterol crystals. β-Hydroxy β-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) is a rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Although some commercially available enzyme inhibiting drugs have effectively reduced cholesterol levels, most of them have failed to meet potential drug candidates' requirements. Here, we have carried out an in-silico analysis of secondary metabolites that have already shown good inhibitory activity against XO and HMGR in a wet lab setup.

    Out of 118 secondary metabolites reviewed, sixteen molecules inhibiting XO and HMGR were selected based on the IC
    values reported in in vitro assays. Further, receptor-based virtual screening was carried out against secondary metabolites using GOLD Protein-Ligand Docking Software, combined supports earlier experimental evidence towards the inhibition of XO and HMGR by natural products. Further study is necessary to explore the clinical efficacy of these secondary molecules, which might be alternatives for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.

    In endemic areas, children develop slowly and naturally anti-Plasmodium antibodies and become semi-immune. Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine + amodiaquine (SPAQ) is a new strategy to reduce malaria morbidity in West African young children. However, SMC may impact on the natural acquisition of anti-Plasmodium immunity. This paper evaluates the effect of SMC with SPAQ on antibody concentration in young children from Niger.

    This research was conducted in areas benefitting from SMC since 2014 (Zinder district), without SMC (Dosso district), and with 1 year of SMC since 2016 (Gaya district). To assess the relationship between SMC and Plasmodium falciparum IgG antibody responses, the total antibody concentrations against two P. falciparum asexual stage vaccine candidate antigens, circumsporozoite protein (CSP) and glutamate-rich protein R2 (GLURP-R2), in children aged 3 to 59months across the three areas were compared. The present study sheds light on the gall inducing habit of a highly host specific eriophyid mite, Aceria pongamiae, on the leaves of Pongamia pinnata leading to the production of abnormal pouch like outgrowths on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of the foliage. Each leaf gall is a highly complex, irregular massive structure, and the formation of which often leads to complete destruction of leaves, especially during heavy mite infestation, and thereby adversely affecting the physiology and growth of the host plant.

    The study was carried out by making comparative observations on FE-SEM histological sections of galls representing four different growth stages categorized on the basis of difference in age groups. Apart from variations in cell metaplasia, a dramatic change was observed in the abaxial-adaxial polarity of the laminar surfaces also throughout the developmental sequence of galls, in all the four growth stages.     Biofilms can form in many industries, one of them is the food industry. The formation of biofilms in this industry could cause immense economic losses and endanger public health. Biofilms formation is mainly triggered by quorum sensing. Therefore, inhibition of quorum sensing could be an innovative approach to inhibit the formation of biofilms. One way to inhibit quorum sensing is by using anti-quorum sensing compounds. Actinomycetes are a group of bacteria that is acknowledged to produce these compounds. There were eight crude extracts of Actinomycetes isolates that showed promising anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum. The concentration of the crude extracts was 20 mg/mL. All the crude extracts showed no antibacterial activity against food spoilage bacteria, except for crude extracts of isolate 18 PM that showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis. They also showed various antibiofilm activity, both inhibition and destruction. The highest inhibition and destruction activity sequentially was done by crude extracts of isolate 12 AC with 89.60% against Bacillus cereus and crude extracts of isolate SW03 with 93.06% against Shewanella putrefaciens. Although some commercially available enzyme inhibiting drugs have effectively reduced cholesterol levels, most of them have failed to meet potential drug candidates' requirements. Here, we have carried out an in-silico analysis of secondary metabolites that have already shown good inhibitory activity against XO and HMGR in a wet lab setup. This research was conducted in areas benefitting from SMC since 2014 (Zinder district), without SMC (Dosso district), and with 1 year of SMC since 2016 (Gaya district).   • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a commonly diagnosed cancer. Previous studies investigating the relationship between periodontal disease (PD) and CRC showed controversial conclusions. This meta-analysis is to explore the association between PD and CRC.

    Observational studies that explore the association between CRC and PD were included in this meta-analysis. A comprehensive literature search in 7 electronic databases to identify all relevant studies published prior to February 2020. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used to evaluate the quality each study. The pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the association between the PD and CRC risk.

    A total of 838 articles were obtained from database searching and 4 articles were obtained from other sources, and 13 articles with 14 studies involving 634,744 participants were included. An association between PD and increased CRC incidence was found, periodontal disease patients were 21% (95%CI, [1.06, 1.38], I
    =83.9%) more likely to develop colorectal cancer than people with healthy oral cavity. But there is no significant association between PD and CRC mortality. The heterogeneity of this meta-analysis was relatively high, I

Here, we characterized carotenoid biosynthetic genes of the plant-pathogenic bacterium Pantoea ananatis, which carries a carotenoid biosynthetic gene cluster (including crtE, X, Y, I, B, and Z) on a plasmid. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed that the crtEXYIB gene cluster is transcribed as a single transcript and crtZ is independently transcribed in the opposite direction. Using splicing by overlap extension with polymerase chain reaction (SOE by PCR) based on asymmetric amplification, we reassembled crtE-B, crtE-B-I, and crtE-B-I-Y. High-performance liquid chromatography confirmed that Escherichia coli expressing the reassembled crtE-B, crtE-B-I, and crtE-B-I-Y operons produced phytoene, lycopene, and β-carotene, respectively. We found that the carotenoids conferred tolerance to UV radiation and toxoflavin. Pantoea ananatis shares rice environments with the toxoflavin producer Burkholderia glumae and is considered to be the first reported example of producing and using carotenoids to withstand toxoflavin. We confirmed that carotenoid production by P. ananatis depends on RpoS, which is positively regulated by Hfq/ArcZ and negatively regulated by ClpP, similar to an important regulatory network of E. coli (HfqArcZ →RpoS Ͱ ClpXP).   • This study aimed to validate a short version of the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale (DEAS-s). To this end, 2,902 adult individuals answered the original DEAS and informed age, weight, and height. Data were analyzed using the full-information factor analysis and Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis. Exclusion criteria retained items with adequate values of commonality and factor loadings. Estimation of IRT parameters, the Item Characteristic Curve (ICC), and test information guided the selection of the best quality items. The final model adjustment was evaluated using Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMSR), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), and Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI). The eating attitudes on each level of DEAS-s were described. The analyses were performed on R software and Microsoft Excel version 2013. As results, six items were excluded because of the low communalities and factor loadings, and one more was excluded because of an overlapping on the ICC. The remaining 17 items explained 0.53 of the total variance and had an adequate goodness-of-fit (RMSEA = 0.05; SRMSR = 0.05; CFI = 0.98; TLI = 0.98). The information test is more accurate between the scores 0 and +3. Scores higher or equal to 1.5 identified individuals with disordered eating attitudes. This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between the local food environment and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a representative sample population of adolescents living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, using multilevel logistic regression models. Among the adolescents, 29.6% were overweight/obese. There were no significant differences between food environment and adolescents' weight status. However, the presence of fast food restaurants near their home increased the chances of being overweight or obese (OR = 2.53; 95%CI 1.02-6.27). Results suggest the need to intensify food and nutrition policies, development of culinary skills, and the reduction in prices of healthy foods to facilitate access to these foods, so that adolescents have options in locations to socialize with friends and family.in English, Portuguese, Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto de programas voltados à assistência pré-natal, parto e ao recém-nascido (Mãe Coruja Pernambucana e Rede Cegonha) na mortalidade neonatal evitável no Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, utilizando a abordagem de adequação. Analisou-se a tendência dos coeficientes de mortalidade neonatal evitável, bem como o impacto desses programas na mortalidade neonatal evitável em quatro regiões de saúde do estado, de 2000 a 2016. Sistemas de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM) e de Nascidos Vivos (SINASC) e documentos oficiais foram usados como fonte de dados. Os óbitos foram classificados segundo a Lista Brasileira de Causas de Óbitos Evitáveis por Intervenções do SUS. Utilizaram-se métodos de regressão linear e joinpoint para análise das tendências e identificação de pontos de inflexão nas curvas de mortalidade neonatal. Houve acentuada queda da mortalidade neonatal evitável no estado, principalmente a precoce. Excetuando-se a Região I-Recife, onde observou-se inflexão negativa das curvas de mortalidade após a implantação da Rede Cegonha, não houve correspondência das inflexões nas curvas com os períodos de implantação dos programas nas demais regiões. Outros fatores parecem ter atuado na melhoria desses indicadores, como a ampliação da rede de alto risco. O estudo qualitativo, fundamentado na análise compreensiva crítica, teve entrevistas semiestruturadas com adolescentes com deficiência física como acervo. Como resultados da análise, configuraram-se três eixos temáticos (1) o corpo, (2) a sociabilidade e interações no grupo, e (3) as interações fora do grupo. No contexto do esporte, destacam-se os grupos como espaço de sociabilidade evocando autonomia, autoestima e desempenho. A reconfiguração do corpo com deficiência aproximou-se de um ideal capacitista capaz de configurar os desafios nas interações fora do grupo.     This study aimed to validate a short version of the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale (DEAS-s). To this end, 2,902 adult individuals answered the original DEAS and informed age, weight, and height. Data were analyzed using the full-information factor analysis and Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis. Exclusion criteria retained items with adequate values of commonality and factor loadings. Estimation of IRT parameters, the Item Characteristic Curve (ICC), and test information guided the selection of the best quality items. The final model adjustment was evaluated using Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMSR), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), and Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI). The eating attitudes on each level of DEAS-s were described. The analyses were performed on R software and Microsoft Excel version 2013. As results, six items were excluded because of the low communalities and factor loadings, and one more was excluded because of an overlapping on the ICC. The remaining 17 items explained 0.53 of the total variance and had an adequate goodness-of-fit (RMSEA = 0.05; SRMSR = 0.05; CFI = 0.98; TLI = 0.98). The information test is more accurate between the scores 0 and +3. Scores higher or equal to 1.5 identified individuals with disordered eating attitudes. This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between the local food environment and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a representative sample population of adolescents living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, using multilevel logistic regression models. Among the adolescents, 29.6% were overweight/obese. There were no significant differences between food environment and adolescents' weight status. However, the presence of fast food restaurants near their home increased the chances of being overweight or obese (OR = 2.53; 95%CI 1.02-6.27). Results suggest the need to intensify food and nutrition policies, development of culinary skills, and the reduction in prices of healthy foods to facilitate access to these foods, so that adolescents have options in locations to socialize with friends and family.in English, Portuguese, Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto de programas voltados à assistência pré-natal, parto e ao recém-nascido (Mãe Coruja Pernambucana e Rede Cegonha) na mortalidade neonatal evitável no Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, utilizando a abordagem de adequação. Analisou-se a tendência dos coeficientes de mortalidade neonatal evitável, bem como o impacto desses programas na mortalidade neonatal evitável em quatro regiões de saúde do estado, de 2000 a 2016. Os óbitos foram classificados segundo a Lista Brasileira de Causas de Óbitos Evitáveis por Intervenções do SUS. Utilizaram-se métodos de regressão linear e joinpoint para análise das tendências e identificação de pontos de inflexão nas curvas de mortalidade neonatal. Houve acentuada queda da mortalidade neonatal evitável no estado, principalmente a precoce. Excetuando-se a Região I-Recife, onde observou-se inflexão negativa das curvas de mortalidade após a implantação da Rede Cegonha, não houve correspondência das inflexões nas curvas com os períodos de implantação dos programas nas demais regiões.     Transcranial surgery(TCS) for pituitary adenoma(PA) is mostly reserved for lesions with widespread extensions. We sought to analyse the intraoperative challenges, morbidity and the factors associated with morbidity of transcranial approaches, in a large series from a tertiary neurosurgical institute.

    We retrospectively evaluated 137 patients who underwent TCS for PA in our institute. The details of their clinical features, imaging, operative and peri-operative events and complications were collected and analysed. The factors associated with morbidity were evaluated.

    The mean age of the cohort was 40.86 ± 13.35 years. 21 (15.3%) patients developed significant post-operative hematoma, out of which 7 patients (5.1%) required re-exploration. Post-operative diabetes insipidus was noted in 45 patients (32.84%), while SIADH was noted in 10 patients (7.35%). Other complications were cranial nerve palsy in 14 patients (10.2%), visual deterioration in 7 patients (5.1%). Neither tumour characteristics nor the choignificantly influences the incidence of DI. A proper and judicious selection of approach and meticulous surgical technique should result in a reduction in associated morbidity and mortality.

Despite the large amount of studies about the molecular pathway of bladder cancer, there are few studies about BAP-1. The aim of this study is to evaluate the BAP-1 expression molecularly and immunohistochemically and compare it with GATA-3 and CK5/6 immunohistochemical stains.

    A BAP-1 antibody was applied by western blotting to the tumor and normal tissues of 11 patients with known primary bladder tumors. The paraffin blocks of 150 non-invasive and 150 invasive tumor tissues were selected from transurethral resection materials. BAP-1, GATA-3, and CK5/6 immunohistochemical stains were applied to them, and the results were evaluated.

    The protein expression levels of BAP-1 increased more in the tumor tissues compared to the normal tissues. The immunohistochemical BAP-1 expression was strong in the muscle-invasive group. In this study, we determine if MPM PILN metastasis can be reliably detected on computed tomography (CT).

    Preoperative staging CT exams were reviewed for the presence of PILN in MPM patients undergoing eP/D between 2007-2013 with surgical sampling of their PILN.     Introduction home confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic can influence the dietary profiles of the population, suddenly subjected to a stressful factor that implies important modifications in life habits. Among others, a restriction of mobility and a change in the way of carrying out work, going from being face-to-face to non-contact (teleworking). Objective to know the usual dietary pattern prior to confinement, and to assess the evolution of adherence to the Mediterranean diet weekly until its conclusion. Methods data were collected using a weekly anonymous online questionnaire that monitored adherence to the Mediterranean diet in real time in an initial sample of 490 adults from Spain. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the MEDAS (Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener) and modified PREDIMED questionnaires. Results confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the eating habits of the participants, so that adherence to the Mediterranean diet increased at the end of the confinemas measured by body mass index (BMI) except in women (23.3 kg/m2 ± 2.9 initial and 23.4 kg/m2 ± 2.9 final; p less then 0.001), with a slight increase in this parameter, but maintaining on average the healthy values recommended by the guidelines. Conclusions in the studied population we observed an improvement in adherence to the Mediterranean diet without observing clinically relevant changes in BMI.
    Introduction fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic rheumatic disorder that is related to high levels of cholesterol, high values of diastolic pressure, higher waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR), and higher body mass index. Objectives the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Ganoderma lucidum (GL) and Ceratonia siliqua (CS) on blood parameters and anthropometrical measures in women with fibromyalgia. Methods a double-blind randomized pilot trial was carried out. One group took 6 g/day of micro-milled carpophore powder of GL for 6 weeks, while the second group took the same dose of CS flour. Fasting glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides levels, weight, fat mass, muscular mass, waist-hip ratio, and blood pressure were assessed. Results our results did not show any statistically significant differences in any of the outcome measures, even if there was a CS tendency to reduce fasting glucose levels and increase WHR. Conclusions our results did not support the utility of both GL and CS as nutritional supplements to cont, even if there was a CS tendency to reduce fasting glucose levels and increase WHR. Results confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the eating habits of the participants, so that adherence to the Mediterranean diet increased at the end of the confinemas measured by body mass index (BMI) except in women (23.3 kg/m2 ± 2.9 initial and 23.4 kg/m2 ± 2.9 final; p less then 0.001), with a slight increase in this parameter, but maintaining on average the healthy values recommended by the guidelines. Conclusions in the studied population we observed an improvement in adherence to the Mediterranean diet without observing clinically relevant changes in BMI.   • This study investigated the protective effect of two flavonols quercetin and myricetin on barrier function of rat intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) cells with indomethacin injury. When the cells were pretreated with the heated or unheated flavonols of 2.5-10 μmol/L for 24-48 h and then injured by 300 μmol/L indomethacin for 24 h, they showed reduced lactate dehydrogenase release (LDH) but increased cell viability; however, the flavonols of 20 μmol/L exerted a little effect to increase cell viability or decrease LDH release. Cell pretreatment with 5 μmol/L flavonols also resisted cell barrier dysfunction by increasing transepithelial resistance, reducing paracellular permeability, and promoting mRNA and protein expression of three tight junction proteins zonula occluden-1, occludin, and claudin-1. Although indomethacin injury increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and consequently caused JNK/Src activation, the flavonols could decrease [Ca2+]i and attenuate the calcium-mediated JNK/Src activation. For some highly sensitised patients (HSP) there is hardly any suitable donor available in the deceased donor pool of their allocation organisation and therefore they wait a very long time before being offered a kidney for transplant. Especially patients with rare HLA phenotypes in relation to the actual donor pool are waiting extremely long. As HLA phenotypes are different in the various European populations, we hypothesized that extension of the donor pool outside the respective allocation system will increase the chance of receiving a compatible transplant for this subgroup of highly sensitised patients. One of the objectives of the EUROSTAM project, (a Europe-wide Strategy to enhance Transplantation of highly sensitised patients on the basis of Acceptable HLA Mismatches) was to develop a tool to compare the chance of transplanting HSP in different European populations with donor organs from within and outside their own donor pool. Information on the HLA type and ABO blood group of the actual donor population, as well as the acceptable mismatches of long waiting HSP were obtained from the EUROSTAM partner organizations i.e. Eurotransplant (ET), UK National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Barcelona, Prague and Athens. Results from simulations using the newly developed tool shows that 195 (27%) of the 724 long waiting highly sensitised patients registered at each partner organisation have increased chances of transplant in a different European donor pool. Blood flow restriction training, despite using lower intensities (30-50% 1RM), can provide similar improvements in muscle mass and strength. However, studies commonly investigate the effects of blood flow restriction training in large muscular groups, whereas there are few studies that investigated those effects in smaller muscle groups, such as the muscles involved in grasping (e.g, wrist flexors; finger flexors). Clinically, smaller muscular groups should also be considered in intervention programs, given that repetitive stress, such as repeated strain injuries, affects upper limbs and may lead to chronic pain and incapacity for work.     Blood flow restriction (BFR) training enhances muscular strength and hypertrophy in several populations including older adults and injured athletes. However, the efficacy of emerging BFR technologies on muscular adaptations, vascular health, and pain is unclear.

    The purpose of this study was to examine muscular performance, pain and vascular function in response to eight weeks of BFR compared to traditional resistance training and a control group.

    Thirty-one overtly healthy participants (age 23 ± 4y, 65% female) underwent eight weeks of supervised high load resistance training (RES), low load resistance training with BFR (BFR) or no training (control, CON). RES and BFR (with pneumatic bands) performed seven upper and lower body exercises, two to three sessions per week at 60% and 30% of one-repetition maximum (1RM), respectively. Twenty-four hours post-exercise, general muscle soreness was assessed via a visual analog scale (VAS) and present pain intensity (PPI) of the McGill and soreness when using BFR.

    ACL reconstruction often results in an extended period of muscle atrophy and weakness. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a technique that has been shown to decrease muscle atrophy in a variety of populations.

    The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the research presented on the effect of blood flow restriction training on quadriceps muscle atrophy and circumference post ACL reconstruction.

    Systematic Review.

    Articles were reviewed using the databases Google Scholar, PubMed, and EBSCO. Keywords included blood flow restriction training, ACL reconstruction, and quadriceps.

    English language, peer-reviewed journals; randomized control trials; and articles including blood flow restriction and measurement of quadriceps atrophy and circumference post ACL reconstruction. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gsk2193874.html Exclusion criteria included non-English language publications; studies without a control group; and articles without sufficient data to evaluate the methodology. Four studies met the selection criteria and were assessed using the GRADE scale, which analyzes the strength of a study based on study limitations, precision, consistency, directness, and publication bias. After a GRADE designation was assigned, the following information was extracted from and compared across the studies participant demographics, cuff used, graft used during ACL reconstruction, tool used to assess muscle atrophy, protocol used, and conclusions.

    Three out of four studies showed some amount of an increase in femoral muscle cross sectional area after the use of BFR combined with low-intensity resistance training (LIRT). The strength of all four studies was moderate when assessed using the GRADE scale.

    This review of the available evidence yields promising results regarding the use of BFR and LIRT in the remediation of femoral muscle atrophy after an ACL reconstruction. Further research is necessary before BFR can be recommended for use in clinical settings.

    The gluteus medius (GMed) and gluteus minimus (GMin) muscle segments demonstrate different responses to pathology and ageing, hence it is important in rehabilitation that prescribed therapeutic exercises can effectively target the individual segments with adequate exercise intensity for strengthening.

    The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate whether common therapeutic exercises generate at least high ( > 40% maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC)) electromyographic (EMG) activity in the GMed (anterior, middle and posterior) and GMin (anterior and posterior) segments.

    Seven databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, AusSPORT, PEDro, SPORTdiscus and Cochrane Library) were searched from inception to May 2018 for terms relating to gluteal muscle, exercise, and EMG. The search yielded 6918 records with 56 suitable for inclusion. Quality assessment, data extraction and data analysis were then undertaken with exercise data pooled into a meta-analysis where two or more studies were available for an exercise and muscle segment.

However, traditional Treg identification techniques might have misinterpreted the frequencies of Treg cells in CC. Thus, we investigated the presence of genuine Treg cells in CC.

    Treg cells were analyzed in mucosal and peripheral blood samples of CC patients before and during treatment with the corticosteroid drug budesonide and in healthy controls. Samples were analyzed by flow cytometry by classifying CD3+CD4+ cells as activated FoxP3highCD45RA- Treg cells, resting FoxP3dimCD45RA+ Treg cells, and nonsuppressive FoxP3dimCD45RA- T helper cells. Traditional gating strategies that classified Treg cells as CD25highCD127low, FoxP3+CD127low, and CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ were also used to facilitate comparison with previous studies.

    20,099 children (4-16 years old) were randomized to receive two doses of TAK-003 or placebo three months apart and are under long-term febrile surveillance to detect dengue by serotype-specific RT-PCR. (NCT02747927).

    Cumulative efficacy against dengue over ~27 months since first dose was 72.7% (95% CI 67.1 - 77.3), which included efficacy of 67.0% (95% CI 53.6 - 76.5) in dengue-naïve and 89.2% (82.4 - 93.3) against hospitalized dengue. In the second year after vaccination, a decline in efficacy was observed [56.2% (42.3 - 66.8)] with the largest decline in 4 - 5 year-old children [24.5% (-34.2 - 57.5)]; efficacy was 60.6% (43.8 - 72.4) in 6 - 11 year and 71.2% (41.0 - 85.9) in 12 - 16 year age groups. As TAK-003 efficacy varies by serotype, changes in serotype dominance partially contributed to the efficacy differences in year by year analysis.   • Problems in prosthetic fitting or mobility of amputated patients are often caused primarily by insufficient stump quality. To achieve better rehabilitation results and a higher quality of life it is mandatory that the physician treating the patient is able to diagnose stump problems and to indicate stump correction surgery. A skilled knowledge of amputation techniques, different levels of amputation, as well as of prosthetic fitting methods is needed. The physician has to have knowledge of the differences between phantom sensation, phantom pain and stump pain, as well as their possible causes. Especially with stump pain caused by stump problems revision surgery has to be considered with the patient. A well-done surgical stump correction should result in a better end-bearing capacity, less pain, improved rehabilitation potential and better life quality. Stump revision surgery should be indicated more often, and this type of surgery should be a standard procedure in every orthopaedic and trauma department.

This study investigated whether testing speeds and joint angles during a Modified Tardieu assessment matched lower-limb angular velocity and range of motion during walking.

    The aim of this review is to identify the best evidence to define rehabilitative approaches to acute and post-acute phases of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease.

    A literature search (of PubMed, Google Scholar, PEDro and Cochrane databases) was perform-ed for relevant publications from January to April 2020.

    A total of 2,835 articles were retrieved, and the search resulted in a final total 31 published arti-cles. A narrative synthesis of the selected articles was then performed. Some studies examine the effect of the pandemic on rehabilitation services and provide suggestions for a new reorganization of these services. Other studies focus on COVID-19 sequelae, formulating recommendations for rehabilitative interventions.

    For COVID-19 patients, an integrated rehabilitative process is recommended, involving a multidisciplinary and multi-professional team provid-ing neuromuscular, cardiac, respiratory, and swallowing interventions, and psychological support, in order to improve patients' quality of life. The intervention of a physician expert in rehabilitation should assess the patient, and a dedicated intervention set up after thorough assessment of the patient's clinical condition, in collaboration with all rehabilitation team professionals.
