ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Sauropus androgynus L. Merr is an underexploited perennial shrub traditionally used as a medicinal plant in South Asia and Southeast Asia. The plant is regarded as not just a green vegetable for diet but a traditional herb for certain aliments. For instance, it has traditionally been used to relieve fever, to treat ulcers and diabetes, to promote lactation and eyesight, as well as reducing obesity. AIM OF THE STUDY This paper aims to review the botany, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology and pharmacological activities of S. androgynus and discuss the known chemical constituents combined with S. androgynus-induced bronchiolitis obliterans for providing new ideas to the following mechanism of the disease and pharmacology research of the plant. MATERIALS AND METHODS The data presented in this review were collected from published literatures as well as the electronic databases of PubMed, CNKI, Web of Science, SCI finder, ACS, Science Direct, Wiley, Springer, Taylor, Google Scholar and and side effects of the plant presently used in health care and medicine are a major area of concern. CONCLUSION Though little importance of this multigreen plant was attached, S. androgynus has notable phytochemical constituents and various pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity activities. Studies have firmly established the association between excessive consumption of the uncooked S. androgynus juice over a period of time and the occurrence of bronchiolitis obliterans. It is unsuited to ingestion of excessive S. androgynous before fully understanding the pathogenesis and induction mechanism of this fatal disease. S. androgynus-induced bronchiolitis obliterans, phytochemistry together with of pharmacology for traditional uses of S. androgynus still needed further investigation. However, the therapeutic mechanism of Sophora alopecuroides L.particularly in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY To evaluate the treatment effects of total alkaloids of Sophora alopecuroides L. in ulcerative colitis (UC) **** model and explore the therapeutic mechanism of KDZ on UC based on bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota. MATERIALS AND METHODS Colitis were induced in BALB/c **** by administering 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days. The **** were then given KDZ (300, 150 and 75 mg/kg) and the positive drug sulfasalazine (SASP, 450 mg/kg) via oral administration for 7 days. The review aims to provide updated systematic information on ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological uses, toxicity studies, and patented formulations of V. anthelmintica. This review will not only help to identify the research gaps but also provide information to the scientific community for future research requisites. Over the past decade, in vivo and ex vivo imaging using multiphoton microscopy have emerged as powerful pre-clinical tools for detailed tissue analyses that can assess morphology, the extracellular matrix (ECM), cell density and vascularisation. Multiphoton microscopy allows for deeper tissue penetration with minor phototoxicity. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to demonstrate the current status of multimodality imaging, including multiphoton microscopy, for detailed analyses of neo-endothelialisation and ECM evolution after flow-diverter stent (FDS) treatment in an experimental rabbit model of aneurysms. METHODS Multiphoton microscopy tools for assessing autofluorescence and second harmonic generation (SHG) signals from biological tissues were used to evaluate the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms in an animal model of aneurysms (pig, rabbit). Results from multiphoton microscopy were compared to those from standard histology, electronic and bright field microscopy. CONCLUSIONS The present study describes novel evaluation modes based on multiphoton microscopy for visualising tissue morphology (e.g., collagen, elastin, and cells) to qualify and quantify the extent of neo-intimal formation of covered arteries and device integration into the arterial wall using a rabbit model of intracranial aneurysms treated with FDS. PURPOSE To assess efficacy, safety and to discuss optimal medical therapy of stent-assisted coiling of ruptured intracranial aneurysms. METHODS Ruptured intracranial aneurysms treated with stent-assisted coiling in eight different institutions were retrospectively reviewed. Medical treatment regimens varied among the centers, mainly regarding heparin administration and post-procedural single or double antiplatelet therapy. In a patient with variant angina of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery, myocardial ischemia changed the QRS-ST-T configurations without J-waves into those resembling "lambda" waves at maximal ST-segment elevation, and couplets or triplets of supraventricular extrasystole (SVE) changed the ischemia-induced "lambda" waves into QRS-ST-T configurations resembling a "tombstone" morphology or "monophasic QRS-ST complex." At the resolution phase of coronary spasm, the QRS-ST-T configurations returned to those without J-waves and were changed by SVE into "lambda" waves. Interestingly, neither ischemia- nor SVE-induced "lambda" waves or SVE-induced "tombstone" morphology or "monophasic QRS-ST complex" were complicated by ventricular tachyarrhythmia.
Inflammation is involved in various processes of atherosclerosis development. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a predictor for cardiovascular risk, are reportedly reduced by statins. However, several studies have demonstrated that CRP is a bystander during atherogenesis. While S100A12 has been focused on as an inflammatory molecule, it remains unclear whether statins affect circulating S100A12 levels. Here, we investigated whether atorvastatin treatment affected S100A12 and which biomarkers were correlated with changes in arterial inflammation.
We performed a prospective, randomized open-labeled trial on whether atorvastatin affected arterial (carotid and thoracic aorta) inflammation using
fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (

Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) is a clinical construct introduced to describe cryptogenic stroke cases with ambiguous diagnoses. Cardiac causes are recognized as a major cause of ESUS, Patent foramen ovale (PFO) being among them. We aimed to investigate the relationship between infarct patterns and PFO in patients with ESUS.
We evaluated 190 consecutive patients with ESUS registered in the Tokyo Women's Medical University Stroke Registry. Among them, 94 patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging and angiography, as well as transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, were included in this study. The infarct patterns were classified according to location (infratentorial or non-infratentorial lesions), size (small or large infarcts), and number (single or multiple lesions).
Prevalence of PFO was significantly higher in patients in the infratentorial than those in the non-infratentorial lesion group (40.7% versus 14.9%, respectively; P=0.007). However, neither lesion size nor number were associated with PFO. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the presence of infratentorial lesions was independently associated with PFO in ESUS patients (odds ratio 2.18; 95% confidence interval 1.24-3.95; P<0.007). In 21 patients with PFO, large PFOs were more prevalent in the infratentorial than in the non-infratentorial lesion group.

Different demands for these must be met, which are related to the respective medical field, the type of imaging technology, and also environmental factors. Together with the many other regulations already enacted mainly in 2018 this is another piece of the puzzle on the road to perfecting regulations in oral and maxillofacial radiology with the aim to improve patient care.The efficacy of anticoagulation for isolated distal DVT (id-DVT) is still uncertain and controversial. The aim of this study was to elucidate the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) from id-DVT and to investigate the need for anticoagulants.We identified hospitalized patients with id-DVT diagnosed by lower-extremity ultrasonography (LEUS) from January 2013 to December 2013 in our institute. The exclusion criteria were the simultaneous detection of PE, a history of PE and/or DVT, and administration of anticoagulants before DVT detection. We retrospectively investigated the patient characteristics, treatments, occurrence of PE, and bleeding events between the groups with and without anticoagulation.A total of 151 patients met the criteria. The median (IQR) age was 74 (67, 80) years old, and there were 60 (39.7%) men. The median (IQR) observation period was 571 (160, 721) days. Significant differences in patient characteristics were observed for hypertension, operation time, consultation with experts, and follow-up LEUS. During the observation period, only one patient in the no-anticoagulation group who had traumatic cerebral hemorrhaging and was bedridden developed PE (non-massive type). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the occurrence of PE between the groups (log-rank P = 0.569). Bleeding episodes were observed in 9 of 151 (6.0%) patients, and all patients with bleeding events were taking anticoagulants (log-rank P less then 0.001).The present retrospective single center study suggests that anticoagulation for id-DVT in inpatients with various backgrounds has a low efficacy to prevent the occurrence of PE and may increase bleeding events.Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) refers to a rare, progressive disorder that is characterized by occlusive pulmonary vascular remodeling, resulting in increased pulmonary arterial pressure, right-sided heart failure, and eventual death. Ultrasonography has been shown to be a useful tool for diagnosing pneumothorax in the hands of experts. After performing bronchopleural procedures, the recommendation is to perform chest radiography to rule out complications. Our objective was to determine the validity of lung ultrasound, conducted by pulmonologists without experience in this procedure, to tule out pneumothorax after invasive procedures.
Our prospective observational study consecutively included patients who underwent transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), therapeutic thoracentesis (TT) and/or transparietal pleural biopsies (PB) for whom subsequent chest radiography to rule out complications was indicated. In all cases, the same pulmonologist who performed the technique performed an ultrasound immediately after the procedure. A diagnosis of pneumothorax was considered in the presence of a lung point or the combination of the following signs absence of pleural sliding, absence of B-lines and presence of the "barcode" sign.
We included 275 procedures (149 TBLBs, 36 BPs, 90 TTs), which resulted in 14 (5.1%) iatrogenic pneumothoraxes. Ultrasonography presented a sensitivity of 78.5%, a specificity of 85% and positive and negative predictive value of 22% and 98.6%, respectively. Ultrasonography did not help detect the presence of 3 pneumothoraxes, one of which required chest drainage, but adequately diagnosed 2 pneumothoraxes that were not identified in the initial radiography.

Aortic stricture (AS) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in individuals 65 years of age or older. A number of epidemiological studies have suggested that certain cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and comorbidities could be associated with AS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between CRFs and comorbidities and severe symptomatic AS in individuals 65 years of age or older in a Spanish healthcare region.

We conducted a multicentre, observational cross-sectional study that collected information using a structured survey sent by email to 1015 partners of the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases Workgroup of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (GEAS-SEMI) from the 1st to the 31st of March 2017.
We identified a total of 21 support units/consultations for the ophthalmology departments. Seventeen (81%) of the units were specific internal medicine-ophthalmology consultations, and 5 (24%) units had been created in the past 5 years. A median of 460 patients were assessed per unit by the end of the year.

We observe that although increased Ct screening, rescreening, and treating most of the partners of infected people will reduce the prevalence, these mitigations alone are not sufficient to control the epidemic. The current practice is to treat the partners of an infected individual without first testing them for infection. The model predicts that if a sufficient number of the partners of all infected people are tested and treated, then there is a threshold condition where the epidemic can be mitigated. This threshold results from the expanded treatment network created by treating an individual's infected partners' partners. We find that in most scenarios both the strength and duration of RSV and Influenza interaction could be estimated from the simulated surveillance data reasonably well. Current cell-based biosensors have progressed substantially from mere alternatives to molecular bioreceptors into enabling tools for interfacing molecular machineries and gene circuits with microelectronics and for developing groundbreaking sensing and theragnostic platforms. The recent literature concerning whole-cell biosensors is reviewed with an emphasis on mammalian cells, and the challenges and breakthroughs brought along in biomedical analyses through novel biosensing concepts and the synthetic biology toolbox. These recent innovations allow development of cell-based biosensing platforms having tailored performances and capable to reach the levels of sensitivity, dynamic range, and stability suitable for high analytic/medical relevance. They also pave the way for the construction of flexible biosensing platforms with utility across biological research and clinical applications. The work is intended to stimulate interest in generation of cell-based biosensors and improve their acceptance and exploitation.
We report a particular case study of the unexpected death of a 70-year-old caucasian man (affected by crohn's disease) due to the laceration of the ileocolic mesentery and its blood vessels following a colonoscopy procedure carried out only a few hours previously.
The autopsy showed that the lacerated blood vessels (i.e. the collateral and terminal branches of the superior mesenteric artery), which run along the section of the intestines between the end of the ileum and the ascending cecum, had led to a severe intra-abdominal hemorrhage and, consequently, fatal hemorrhagic shock.
In such cases, both an autopsy and complete histological analysis are essential in order to determine the exact point responsible for the intestinal hemorrhage and to better understand the pathological mechanism involved.
The unexpected death due to severe peritoneal hemorrhaging following a minimally invasive diagnostic clinical procedure, such as a colonoscopy, is particularly rare in Literature. In fact, amongst the several endoscopy procedures commonly used today, it is one of the safest procedures with the lowest recorded rate of complications. Furthermore, it is an even rarer event that a routine diagnostic colonoscopy can result in a fatality, with only two cases reported.
In the case of sudden death following such a routine diagnostic clinical procedure, the forensic scientist should not disregard the fact that also damage, which appears negligible (caused by the normal procedures used in carrying out a colonoscopy) can actually also result in severe and fatal hemorrhaging.

Psychiatrists and physicians should be aware of the misuse potential of zolpidem and adopt measures restricting its use.

This retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 54 patients with SSD (20 males/34 females, mean age ± standard deviation 40.65 ± 13.23 years). Participants' BMI, laboratory data including complete blood count and lipid profile, results from the Korean Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, and scores of the Korean-Symptom Checklist 95-Somatization (SCL95-SOM) were analyzed. We performed a path analysis to evaluate BMI as a predictor of somatic symptoms.
In a path analysis, the SCL95-SOM score was directly influenced by working memory (b = -0.326, p = 0.032), which was significantly influenced by BMI (b = -0.338, p = 0.009), although there was no direct effect of BMI on the SCL95-SOM score. The path analytic model showed a close fit to the data with the following values χ

Current cell-based biosensors have progressed substantially from mere alternatives to molecular bioreceptors into enabling tools for interfacing molecular machineries and gene circuits with microelectronics and for developing groundbreaking sensing and theragnostic platforms. The recent literature concerning whole-cell biosensors is reviewed with an emphasis on mammalian cells, and the challenges and breakthroughs brought along in biomedical analyses through novel biosensing concepts and the synthetic biology toolbox. These recent innovations allow development of cell-based biosensing platforms having tailored performances and capable to reach the levels of sensitivity, dynamic range, and stability suitable for high analytic/medical relevance. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease that primarily affects joints. Interleukin-37 (IL-37) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that is known to suppress immune response and inflammation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between level of IL-37 and RA progression using the disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS-28).
A total of 87 RA patients were separated into 4 groups based on the DAS28, referred to as the remission, mild, moderate and severe groups. 18 healthy volunteers were also included. Serum level of IL-37 and IL-37 mRNA expression level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in each individual participant as well as IL-37 mRNA expression level in synovial cells were assessed to explore their correlation with RA progression.
Serum level of IL-37 and IL-37 mRNA expression levels in both PBMCs and synovial cells were all positively correlated with the severity of RA as reflected by the DAS28. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed area under curve (AUC) values of 1, 0.5262 and 0.7789 for the three parameters.

A total of 87 RA patients were separated into 4 groups based on the DAS28, referred to as the remission, mild, moderate and severe groups. 18 healthy volunteers were also included. Serum level of IL-37 and IL-37 mRNA expression level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in each individual participant as well as IL-37 mRNA expression level in synovial cells were assessed to explore their correlation with RA progression. Serum level of IL-37 and IL-37 mRNA expression levels in both PBMCs and synovial cells were all positively correlated with the severity of RA as reflected by the DAS28. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed area under curve (AUC) values of 1, 0.5262 and 0.7789 for the three parameters. The association between myocardial parasitic load (MPL) and cardiac biomarkers in Canine Leishmaniasis (CanL) has not been studied.
Dogs with advanced CanL were prospectively recruited and were included if they were euthanised. Prior to euthanasia these variables were assessed hematocrit, globulin, creatinine, N-terminal-pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), blood pressure, urine protein/creatinine ratio and echocardiographic parameters. A left ventricular (LV) sample was taken for histopathology and MPL evaluation by quantitative PCR. Correlation of MPL with all variables was analysed. Dogs with lower and higher histopathology scores were compared.
Ten dogs were included. NT-proBNP was 6946pmol/ (interquartile range [IQR] 3751-9268pmol/L) and cTnI 4.56ng/mL (IQR 0.46-13.1ng/mL). In all dogs, echocardiography showed an increase in LV thickening, and histopathology revealed moderate to severe lympho-plasmocytic myocarditis and/or myocardial cell degeneration. MPL was 215.53 parasites/gram (IQR 21.2-1372.63 parasites/gram). A strong correlation (p<0.001; R=0.90; R

Blocking Panx-1 channels after SIV infection prevented the synaptic and axonal compromise induced by the virus, especially by maintaining the more complex synapses. Our data demonstrated that targeting Panx-1 channels can prevent and maybe revert brain synaptic compromise induced by SIV infection.
Anxiety disorders pose one of the biggest threats to mental health worldwide, yet current therapeutics have been mostly ineffective due to issues with relapse, efficacy and toxicity of the medications. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising therapy for treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders including anxiety, but very little is known about the effects of deep brain stimulation on fear memories.
In this study, we employed a standard tone-footshock fear conditioning paradigm and modified plus maze discriminative avoidance task to probe the effects of prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation on various stages of memory.
We identified memory consolidation stage as a critical time point to disrupt fear memory via prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation. The observed disruption was partially modulated by the inactivation of the ventral hippocampus and the transient changes in ventral hippocampus dopamine (D
) receptors expression upon prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation. We also observed wide-scale changes of various neurotransmitters and their metabolites in ventral hippocampus, confirming its important role in response to prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation.
These findings highlight the molecular mechanism in the ventral hippocampus in response to prelimbic cortex stimulation and may have translational value, indicating that targeting the prelimbic cortex in the memory consolidation stage via non-invasive neuromodulation techniques may be a feasible therapeutic strategy against anxiety disorders.

Using Golgi's staining, we demonstrated that SIV infection compromised synaptic and axonal structures, especially in the white matter. Blocking Panx-1 channels after SIV infection prevented the synaptic and axonal compromise induced by the virus, especially by maintaining the more complex synapses. In this study, we employed a standard tone-footshock fear conditioning paradigm and modified plus maze discriminative avoidance task to probe the effects of prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation on various stages of memory. We identified memory consolidation stage as a critical time point to disrupt fear memory via prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation. The observed disruption was partially modulated by the inactivation of the ventral hippocampus and the transient changes in ventral hippocampus dopamine (D ) receptors expression upon prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation. We also observed wide-scale changes of various neurotransmitters and their metabolites in ventral hippocampus, confirming its important role in response to prelimbic cortex deep brain stimulation. These findings highlight the molecular mechanism in the ventral hippocampus in response to prelimbic cortex stimulation and may have translational value, indicating that targeting the prelimbic cortex in the memory consolidation stage via non-invasive neuromodulation techniques may be a feasible therapeutic strategy against anxiety disorders.
