    The Jena Sepsis Registry (JSR) included all patients with a diagnosis of sepsis in the four intensive care units of Jena University Hospital from January 2011 to December 2015. Long-term survival 6-48 months after diagnosis was documented by asking the treating general practitioners. The survival times were studied with Kaplan-Meier estimators. Cox regressions were calculated to show associations between possible predictors and survival time.

For 96.4% of the queries to the general practitioners, information on long-term survival was available. Mortality in the intensive care unit was 34% (95% confidence interval [32; 37]), and in-hospital mortality was 45% [42; 47]. As for humans, EMCV infection seems to occur by the contact with animals and can cause febrile illnesses in some infected patients. Here we isolated EMCV strain ZM12/14 from a natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis M. natalensis) in Zambia. Pairwise sequence similarity of the ZM12/14 P1 region consisting of antigenic capsid proteins showed the highest similarity of nucleotide (80.7 %) and amino acid (96.2%) sequence with EMCV serotype 1 (EMCV-1). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ZM12/14 clustered into EMCV-1 at the P1 and P3 regions but segregated from known EMCV strains at the P2 region, suggesting a unique evolutionary history. Reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) screening and neutralizing antibody assays for EMCV were performed using collected tissues and serum from various rodents (n=179) captured in different areas in Zambia. We detected the EMCV genome in 19 M. natalensis (19/179=10.6 %) and neutralizing antibody for EMCV in 33 M. natalensis (33/179=18.4 %).   • We expect that use of this molecular tool to chronically limit astrocytic lactate release will significantly facilitate future studies into the roles and mechanisms of intercellular lactate communication in the brain.This study investigated the impact of the administration of HAART and anti-Koch's, singly and in combination, on sexual competence and birth statistics. Adult male Wistar rats were randomised into distilled water-treated control, HAART-treated, anti-Koch's-treated and HAART + anti-Koch's-treated groups. The 56-day oral treatment led to impaired sexual competence evident by significantly reduced motivation to mate, prolonged latencies of mount, intromissions, ejaculations and post-ejaculatory interval, as well as reduced frequencies of mount, intromissions and ejaculations. This was accompanied by significant reductions in penile erection reflex and penile grooming. HAART and anti-Koch's, when administered singly or in combination, also led to significant reductions in the circulatory follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone and intratesticular testosterone, but a significant rise in prolactin. Also, HAART and/or anti-Koch's significantly reduced sperm count, sperm motility, sperm viability and spermatozoa with normal morphology. Furthermore, HAART and anti-Koch's, separately or in combination, significantly lowered fertility capacity, litter size and litter weight and offspring survival. The deleterious effects of these drugs were more pronounced when combined. Findings of the present study revealed that HAART and/or anti-Koch's impair sexual competence via a testosterone-dependent hyperprolactinemia-mediated mechanism. These events are associated with reduced fertility capacity, poor sperm quality and lowered offspring survival.
    War injuries differ from other injuries owing to the large tissue defects they cause and their high risk of contamination. As fragments scattered by high-energy firearms and explosives cause serious composite tissue damage, repair of such injuries is difficult and requires a long treatment period. We discuss the treatment methods used for injured Syrian War refugees admitted to our clinic and present the most effective repair methods for war-related tissue defects for each region of the body.

    A total of 61 patients treated between June 2012 and April 2015 were retrospectively evaluated in terms of age, gender, duration of hospitalisation, injury site and repair method employed. The patients were grouped by region injured (head/neck, extremities and trunk).

    The female-to-male ratio of the patients was 16/45, and their mean age was 25.2 (range, 3-51) years. Twenty-two patients were under the age of 18. The mean duration of hospitalisation was 28.5days. In this paper, we have prepared two BODIPY-based fluorescent probes, o-Pah and o-Pha, which are two isomers with different active sites, ortho-aminohydroxy (3',4' or 4',3') phenyls at meso position of BODIPY, and compared their sensing performance toward triphosgene. The probe with o-(4'-amino-3'-hydroxyl), o-Pha, exhibits better sensing performance over the o-(3'-amino-4'-hydroxyl), o-Pah, for instance, a lower limit of detection (LOD) (0.34 nm vs. 1.2 nm), and more rapid response (10 s vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/bexotegrast.html 200 s). In some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, chimpanzee tracking is a popular tourism activity, offering visitors a chance to view apes in their natural habitats. Chimpanzee tourism is an important source of revenue and thus benefits conservation; however, chimpanzee tracking may also increase the risk of disease transmission from people to chimpanzees directly (e.g., via aerosol transmission) or indirectly (e.g., through the environment or via fomites). This study assessed how tourist behaviors might facilitate respiratory disease transmission at a chimpanzee tracking site in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We observed tourists, guides, and student interns from the time they entered the forest to view the chimpanzees until they left the forest and noted behaviors related to disease transmission. Common behaviors included coughing, sneezing, and urinating, which respectively occurred during 88.1%, 65.4%, and 36.6% of excursions. Per excursion, individuals touched their faces an average of 125.84 ± 34.45 times and touched large tree trunks or branches (which chimpanzees might subsequently touch) an average of 230.14 ± 108.66 times. These results show that many pathways exist by which pathogens might move from humans to chimpanzees in the context of tourism. Guidelines for minimizing the risk of such transmission should consider tourist behavior and the full range of modes by which pathogen transmission might occur between tourists and chimpanzees.
    To describe transfusion management during post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) and the usefulness of standard or point-of-care (POC) laboratory tests for guiding haemostatic management.

    PPH is the leading cause of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity worldwide. Despite the efforts made in recent years, PPH is often burdened by preventable death. Recent data from the active Italian Obstetric Surveillance System (ItOSS) highlighted the following main critical issues inadequate communication between healthcare professionals, inability to correctly and promptly assess the severity of haemorrhage, delays in diagnosis and treatment, failure to request blood promptly and inappropriate monitoring post-partum.

    Data in the literature have been compared with the rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM)- and the thromboelastography (TEG)-guided algorithms applied in the authors' departments.

    PPH transfusion therapy may have an empirical approach based on the standard use of blood products or a targeted approach based on coagulation monitoring by laboratory or POC tests.

The updated S2k guideline focuses on the IPF diagnostic process and describes the criteria of a UIP pattern in HRCT and histopathology that are differentiated into the categories "UIP pattern," "probable UIP pattern," "indetermined for UIP," and "alternative pattern." Depending on the anamnestic, clinical and serologic findings, HRCT, and - if acquired - histomorphology features, an algorithm to diagnose the IPF is recommended. Heliomycin exhibited a significant decrease in the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) compared to the positive control. It was demonstrated that heliomycin showed histological improvement of hepatocytes and marked increase of nuclear pyknotic with clear cytoplasm, which is a sign of improving the apoptotic pathway of malignant cells. It also displayed marked fibrosis at most of the malignant cells and the development of some regenerative nodules. Heliomycin showed moderate immunoreactivity with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) compared to the positive control group.   • Time-domain analysis (TDA) is useful for measuring optical devices along with a link and for diagnosing a long device. In this Letter, an optical vector analyzer with TDA capability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key to realizing TDA is a low-coherence optical carrier, which is achieved by modulating an electrical broadband signal on a continuous-wave light via acousto-optic modulation. Then, optical single-sideband modulation and vector balanced detection are used to measure the total frequency response of multiple devices under test (DUTs). Through an inverse Fourier transform, the obtained DUT impulses are distinguished in the time domain. Finally, time-domain gating and Fourier transform are applied to extract the frequency response of each DUT. An experiment is performed in which a fiber link comprising three DUTs and an H 13 C 14 N gas cell with a breakpoint inserted is characterized. The frequency setting resolution is 5 MHz, and a time-domain resolution of 30.84 ns is proved, which can reach 14.881 ns in theory.All-dielectric metamaterials conforming to an optical reflectionless potential (ORP) offer broadband, omni-directional suppression of reflection. Though they are predicted to possess broadband negative group velocity dispersion (GVD), ultrashort pulse propagation through such materials has not been studied so far, to the best of our knowledge. In this work, we demonstrate negative GVD and group delay dispersion over broadband covering visible to near-infrared wavelengths. We investigate the role of ORP in supercontinuum generation (SC), which is observed to be polarization independent. The negative GVD in ORPs is interesting for pulse compression, phase compensation, dispersion engineering, and controlled SC generation.We demonstrate a novel method to optically tune the pulse advancement and delay based on stimulated Raman gain in hydrogen. With a frequency-chirped pump, the generated signal pulse is selectively amplified at the leading or trailing edge of the pump pulse, depending on whether the frequency difference between the pump and the signal beam is blue or red detuned from the Raman transition, which results in advancement or delay of the signal peak. Different from the method of slow/fast light, where advancement and delay are accompanied with power loss and gain, respectively, for a single resonance, both the advancement and delay are realized in the gain region for the method here. With a piece of 48-mm-long optical nanofiber in hydrogen, the time-shift for a signal peak ranging from 3.7 to -3.7 ns is achieved in a Raman-generated pulse with width of ∼12n s.We report the first, to the best of our knowledge, observation of cross-phase modulational instability (XPMI) of circularly polarized helical Bloch modes carrying optical vortices in a twisted photonic crystal fiber with a three-fold symmetric core, formed by spinning the fiber preform during the draw. When the fiber is pumped by a superposition of left-circular polarization (LCP) and right-circular polarization (RCP) modes, a pair of orthogonal circularly polarized sidebands of opposite topological charge is generated. When, on the other hand, a pure LCP (or RCP) mode is launched, the XPMI gain is zero, and no sidebands are seen. This observation has not been seen before in any system and is unique to chiral structures with N-fold rotational symmetry. The polarization state and topological charge of the generated sidebands are measured. By decomposing the helical Bloch modes into their azimuthal harmonics, we are able to deduce the selection rules for the appearance of modulational instability sidebands. We showed that the four waves in the nonlinear mixing process must exhibit the same set of azimuthal harmonic orders.This Letter reports a demonstration of integrating a tiny GaN-based photonic chip with a PDMS microfluidics system. The photonic chip containing InGaN/GaN quantum wells is responsible for light emission and photodetection and fabricated through standard microfabrication techniques.   • Among the TEG values, the maximal amplitude (MA) had the highest discriminating power for DIC, with an area under the curve of 0.814. An MA less then 60 indicated DIC with 79% sensitivity, 73% specificity, and 94% negative predictive value. Based on multivariable analysis, MA less then 60 was an independent predictor of DIC (odds ratio 5.616 (95% confidence interval 3.213-9.818)). Although there is no general consensus regarding the definition of "unresectable" in lung cancer, the term "resectable" refers to technically resectable and indicates that resection can provide a favorable prognosis to some extent. Unresectable lung cancer is typically represented by stage III and IV disease. Stage III lung cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and in some patients with technically resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), multimodality treatments, including induction chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery, are the treatments of choice. The representative surgical intervention for unresectable stage III/IV NSCLC is salvage surgery, which refers to surgical treatment for local residual/recurrent lesions after definitive non-surgical treatment. Surgical intervention is also used for an oligometastatic stage IV NSCLC. In this review, we highlight the role of surgical intervention in patients with unresectable NSCLC, for whom an initial complete resection is technically difficult. We further describe the history of and new findings on salvage surgery for unresectable NSCLC and surgery for oligometastatic NSCLC.Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global public health problem with an increasing prevalence. DM increases the risk of infections caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. We examined the prevalence, subtypes, and risk factors of Blastocystis infection in patients with and without DM in central Thailand. Stool samples and questionnaires were obtained from 130 people in the DM group and 100 people in the non-DM group. Blastocystis infection was identified via a nested polymerase chain reaction and subtyped via sequencing of the partial small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. Analysis of potential risk factors was conducted via binary logistic regression. The overall prevalence of Blastocystis infection was 10.8%, including rates of 9% and 12.3% in the non-DM and DM groups, respectively. The most prevalent subtype was ST3, followed by ST1, and ST4. Factors that potentially increased the risk of Blastocystis infection include patients being >65 years old, the presence of DM, a DM duration of ≥10 years, a low level of education, and animal ownership. In conclusion, this is the first study of Blastocystis infection in DM, and a high prevalence was found among this population. Therefore, health education promoting sanitation and hygiene is necessary to reduce and prevent infection in the community.A growing number of studies have revealed the association between health-related lifestyle habits and purpose in life. However, the mechanism linking the two has not been adequately understood. This study aims to examine the effect of changes in health-related lifestyle habits on purpose in life. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on certified professional specialists of health management. We analyzed the cohort's demographic information, health-related lifestyle behaviors, reported changes in health-related lifestyle habits (exercise, diet, sleep, and other habits), and purpose in life using a validated tool (Ikigai-9). There was a statistically significant difference in the Ikigai-9 score among the groups. Healthier changes in lifestyle habits increased perceptions of purpose in life.     In the present study, we investigated whether transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)-induced expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) was regulated by the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 17 (ADAM17)/ribosomal S6 kinases 1 (RSK1)/CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein β (C/EBPβ) signaling pathway in human lung epithelial cells (A549).

    Our results revealed that TGF-β-induced CTGF expression was weakened by ADAM17 small interfering RNA (ADAM17 siRNA), TNF-α processing inhibitor-0 (TAPI-0, an ADAM17 inhibitor), U0126 (an ERK inhibitor), RSK1 siRNA, and C/EBPβ siRNA. TGF-β-induced ERK phosphorylation as well as ADAM17 phosphorylation was attenuated by U0126. The TGF-β-induced increase in RSK1 phosphorylation was inhibited by TAPI-0 and U0126. TGF-β-induced C/EBPβ phosphorylation was weakened by U0126, ADAM17 siRNA, and RSK1 siRNA. In addition, TGF-β increased the recruitment of C/EBPβ to the CTGF promoter.
    Among the TEG values, the maximal amplitude (MA) had the highest discriminating power for DIC, with an area under the curve of 0.814. An MA less then 60 indicated DIC with 79% sensitivity, 73% specificity, and 94% negative predictive value. Based on multivariable analysis, MA less then 60 was an independent predictor of DIC (odds ratio 5.616 (95% confidence interval 3.213-9.818)). Although there is no general consensus regarding the definition of "unresectable" in lung cancer, the term "resectable" refers to technically resectable and indicates that resection can provide a favorable prognosis to some extent. Unresectable lung cancer is typically represented by stage III and IV disease. Stage III lung cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and in some patients with technically resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), multimodality treatments, including induction chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery, are the treatments of choice. The representative surgical intervention for unresectable stage III/IV NSCLC is salvage surgery, which refers to surgical treatment for local residual/recurrent lesions after definitive non-surgical treatment. Surgical intervention is also used for an oligometastatic stage IV NSCLC. In this review, we highlight the role of surgical intervention in patients with unresectable NSCLC, for whom an initial complete resection is technically difficult. We further describe the history of and new findings on salvage surgery for unresectable NSCLC and surgery for oligometastatic NSCLC.Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global public health problem with an increasing prevalence. DM increases the risk of infections caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. We examined the prevalence, subtypes, and risk factors of Blastocystis infection in patients with and without DM in central Thailand. Stool samples and questionnaires were obtained from 130 people in the DM group and 100 people in the non-DM group. Blastocystis infection was identified via a nested polymerase chain reaction and subtyped via sequencing of the partial small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. Analysis of potential risk factors was conducted via binary logistic regression. The overall prevalence of Blastocystis infection was 10.8%, including rates of 9% and 12.3% in the non-DM and DM groups, respectively. The most prevalent subtype was ST3, followed by ST1, and ST4. Factors that potentially increased the risk of Blastocystis infection include patients being >65 years old, the presence of DM, a DM duration of ≥10 years, a low level of education, and animal ownership. In conclusion, this is the first study of Blastocystis infection in DM, and a high prevalence was found among this population. Therefore, health education promoting sanitation and hygiene is necessary to reduce and prevent infection in the community.A growing number of studies have revealed the association between health-related lifestyle habits and purpose in life. However, the mechanism linking the two has not been adequately understood. This study aims to examine the effect of changes in health-related lifestyle habits on purpose in life. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on certified professional specialists of health management. We analyzed the cohort's demographic information, health-related lifestyle behaviors, reported changes in health-related lifestyle habits (exercise, diet, sleep, and other habits), and purpose in life using a validated tool (Ikigai-9).   • Fibrinogen has been implicated to play a role in the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many studies have evaluated the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on plasma fibrinogen levels in OSA patients. However, results from different reports were not consistent. To assess the effect of CPAP treatment on plasma fibrinogen levels of patients with OSA, a meta-analysis was performed.

    A systematic search of Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, Wanfang Database and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure was performed. Data were extracted, and then weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model.

    Twenty-two studies involving 859 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Combined data showed that plasma fibrinogen concentrations decreased after CPAP therapy (WMD = -0.38 g/l, 95% CI [-0.54 to -0.22 g/l], P<0.001). In the subgroup analyses by therapy duration, plasma fibrinogen concentrations declined significantly in the long-term (≥1 month) CPAP therapy subgroup (WMD = -0.33 g/l, 95% CI [-0.49 to -0.16 g/l], P<0.001) but not in the short-term (<1 month) CPAP therapy subgroup (WMD = -0.84 g/l, 95% CI [-1.70 to 0.03 g/l], P=0.058). Moreover, in patients with long-term CPAP therapy duration, plasma fibrinogen levels decreased with good CPAP compliance (≥4 h/night) (WMD = -0.37 g/l, 95% CI [-0.55 to -0.19 g/l], P<0.001) but not with poor CPAP compliance (<4 h/night) (WMD = 0.12 g/l, 95% CI [-0.09 to 0.33 g/l], P=0.247).

In this review, key aspects of cell-matrix interaction are highlighted with focus on cardiomyocytes and chemical properties as well as strengths and potential pitfalls in using two commonly applied polymers for soft matrix engineering, polyacrylamide (PAA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are discussed.We present a method for using dynamic light scattering in the single-scattering limit to measure the viscoelastic moduli of soft materials. This microrheology technique only requires a small sample volume of 12 μL to measure up to six decades in time of rheological behavior. We demonstrate the use of dynamic light scattering microrheology (DLSμR) on a variety of soft materials, including dilute polymer solutions, covalently-crosslinked polymer gels, and active, biological fluids. In this work, we detail the procedure for applying the technique to new materials and discuss the critical considerations for implementing the technique, including a custom analysis script for analyzing data output. We focus on the advantages of applying DLSμR to biologically relevant materials breast cancer cells encapsulated in a collagen gel and cystic fibrosis sputum. DLSμR is an easy, efficient, and economical rheological technique that can guide the design of new polymeric materials and facilitate the understanding of the underlying physics governing behavior of naturally derived materials.

  • The ubiquitous nature of hemoglobins, their presence in multiple forms and low cellular expression in organisms suggests alternative physiological functions of hemoglobins in addition to oxygen transport and storage. Previous research has proposed enzymatic function of hemoglobins such as nitric oxide dioxygenase, nitrite reductase and hydroxylamine reductase. In all these enzymatic functions, active ferrous form of hemoglobin is converted to ferric form and reconversion of ferric to ferrous through reduction partners is under active investigation. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/vt104.html The model alga C. reinhardtii contains multiple globins and is thus expected to have multiple putative methemoglobin reductases to augment the physiological functions of the novel hemoglobins. In this regard, three putative methemoglobin reductases and three algal hemoglobins were characterized. Our results signify that the identified putative methemoglobin reductases can reduce algal methemoglobins in a nonspecific manner under in vitro conditions. Enzyme kinetics of two putative methemoglobin reductases with methemoglobins as substrates and in silico analysis support interaction between the hemoglobins and the two reduction partners as also observed in vitro. Our investigation on algal methemoglobin reductases underpins the valuable chemistry of nitric oxide with the newly discovered hemoglobins to ensure their physiological relevance, with multiple hemoglobins probably necessitating the presence of multiple reductases.We report on layer-by-layer (LbL) films of chitosans (CHI) and hyaluronic acid (HA) whose properties could be controlled by employing chitosans with different degrees of deacetylation (DD&****; ≈ 85%; 65%; 40%) and high average molecular weight (ca. 106 g/mol). In spite of their high molecular weight, these chitosans are soluble within a wide pH range, including physiological pH. HA/CHI LbL films produced from polymer solutions at pH 4.5 were thinner, smoother, more hydrophilic than those prepared at pH 7.2. This is attributed to the more extended conformation adopted by chitosan due to its very high charge density at low pH, favoring a compact chain packing during the film formation and resulting in lower film thickness and roughness. The smoother HA/CHI LbL films obtained at pH 4.5 were effective against Escherichia coli, while the thicker, rougher LbL films fabricated at pH 7.2 could be used in the controlled released of Rose Bengal dye. In summary, the tuning of only two parameters, i.e. solution pH and DD&****; of chitosans, provides access to a library of HA/CHI LbL films for tailored, diversified applications.Cellulose was modified by formic acid to prepare formyl cellulose (FC). The amount of formyl groups in FC was adjusted by controlling the reaction time, reaction temperature, and formic acid concentration. Then, FC was used to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) films prepared by solution casting. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that long rod-like cellulose particles were broken into short rods after formylation and the introduction of FC made PLA surface rougher. The mechanical properties of PLA/FC films were improved by the inclusion of FC. Compared to pure PLA film, the PLA/FC composite film with 1 wt% FC (containing 15.79% formyl groups) showed a 48.59% increase in tensile strength and a 346% increase in Young's modulus. The addition of FC also resulted in better water barrier properties. The moisture absorption capacity and water vapor permeability were 40.56% and 51.43% lower than those of the pure-PLA film. The enhancement in properties for PLA/FC composites could be ascribed to the improved compatibility between PLA and cellulose with the introduction of hydrophobic formate groups. The PLA/FC composite films developed in this work could be highly potential for food packaging.The genus Echinococcus of cestode parasites includes important pathogens of humans and livestock animals. Transcriptomic and genomic studies on E. granulosus and E. multilocularis uncovered striking expansion of monodomain Kunitz proteins. This expansion is accompanied by the specialization of some family members away from the ancestral protease inhibition function to fulfill cation channel blockade functions. Since cation channels are involved in immune processes, we tested the effects on macrophage physiology of two E. granulosus Kunitz-type inhibitors of voltage-activated cation channels (Kv) that are close paralogs. Both inhibitors, EgKU-1 and EgKU-4, inhibited production of the Th1/Th17 cytokine subunit IL-12/23p40 by macrophages stimulated with the TLR4 agonist LPS. In addition, EgKU-4 but not EgKU-1 inhibited production of the inflammatory cytokine IL-6. These activities were not displayed by EgKU-3, a family member that is a protease inhibitor without known activity on cation channels. EhLMW-PTPs genes from E. histolytica encode for Low Molecular Weight Tyrosine Phosphatases expressed in trophozoites and amoebic cysts. The role of these phosphatases in the virulence of the parasite has not yet been well characterized. Our results showed a differential expression of the EhLMW-PTPs, at the mRNA and protein levels, in an asynchronous trophozoites culture. Furthermore, we observed that trophozoites transfected that overexpressed EhLMW-PTP2 phagocytized fewer erythrocytes, possibly due to decreased phagocytic cups, and showed deficiencies in adherence to FN and less cytopathic effect. These analyzes suggest that the parasite's EhLMW-PTPs have an essential role in the mechanisms of proliferation, adhesion, and phagocytosis, regulating its pathogenicity.

Considering that a specific and sensitive diagnostic method for estimating risk and evaluating ZIKV propagation is still needed, this review aims to provide an update of the main commercially approved serological diagnostics test by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Comparison of the transcriptome profiles of linalool-type C. camphora with trees of low oil yield resulted in a total of 3,689 differentially expressed unigenes, among them 31 candidate genes had annotations associated with metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, including four in the monoterpenoid biosynthesis pathway and three in the terpenoid backbone biosynthesis pathway. Collectively, this genome-wide transcriptome provides a valuable tool for future identification of genes related to essential oil biosynthesis. Additionally, the identification of a cohort of genes in the biosynthetic pathways of terpenoids provides a theoretical basis for metabolic engineering of essential oils in C. camphora.

We used immunologically relevant genes as input for consensus clustering and applied survival analysis and principal component analysis to determine the properties of the subtypes. We also explored differences of somatic variations, copy number variations,
    fusion, and androgen receptor (AR) scores among the subtypes. Then, we examined the infiltration of different immune cells into the tumor microenvironment in each subtype. We next performed Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) to illustrate the characteristics of the subtypes. Finally, based on the subtypes, we constructed a risk predictive model and verified it in TCGA, Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), cBioPortal, and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) databases.

Rescue extracorporeal cardiac bypass resuscitation has been used in the context of cardiopulmonary arrest, with survival rates of around 34.7% of which 28.5% with good neurological outcome.

    We present here the case of a patient who developed cardiogenic shock after CABG graft occlusion. The patient suffered refractory cardiac arrest during percutaneous revascularization and received rescue cardiopulmonary support. Revascularization was achieved and there was a successful resuscitation with the placement of venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) and an Impella CP device. After a 29-day hospitalization the patient was discharged with no neurological sequelae.

    Although there is limited evidence of the benefit of a combined use of mechanical support (VA-ECMO with other mechanical devices) in the management of cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest following CABG surgery, there seems to be a lower mortality with this approach, and possibly more favourable neurological outcomes. Further research is needed to elucidate the advantages of Impella vs. intra-aortic balloon pump combined with VA-ECMO in such patients.

    Contrast agent allergy may result in severe adverse events that prevent the use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in some patients, especially for those with complex lesions.

    We describe a 59-year-old man who presented with the multi-vessel disease and suffered from contrast allergy. The patient refused to have coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, thus two-stage PCI procedures without iodinated contrast media were performed after a detailed discussion with the heart team, including a chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesion in the proximal left anterior descending artery. The intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) was used for finding the entry point of the proximal fibre cap, and assessing the lesion, thereby marking the positions of the proximal and distal edges of the stent. After PCI, stent expansion and subtle edge dissection or incomplete apposition were confirmed by IVUS and ChromaFlo imaging. Zero-contrast PCI was done successfully without any complication.

    The effects of hyperthyroidism on the heart are well documented, primarily consisting of supraventricular tachycardias, congestive heart failure, and dilated cardiomyopathy. Acute myopericarditis resulting from a hyperthyroid state is an uncommon but recognized association.

    A 29-year-old man with a history of Graves' disease presented with chest pain and electrocardiogram changes suggestive of an infero-lateral ST-elevation myocardial infarction. However, emergent coronary angiography and bedside echocardiography were normal. Troponin-I was found to be >25000 ng/L (normal value <57). Thyroid function tests showed a significantly raised free T4 and undetectable thyroid-stimulating hormone. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) showed extensive myocardial oedema and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in keeping with acute myopericarditis, alongside an enlarged thyroid gland consistent with goitre. Propylthiouracil in combination with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and beta-blocker were coted with acute myopericarditis and should be particularly considered in patients with a pre-existing thyroid condition or in those with symptoms suggestive of hyperthyroidism. Given the specific treatments required in a case of myopericarditis associated with hyperthyroidism, it is important to be aware of this association and consider screening where appropriate.
    Cannabis use is known to be associated with significant cardiovascular morbidity. We describe three cases of cannabis-related malignant arrhythmias, who presented to the cardiac department at our institution within the last 2 years. All three patients were known to smoke cannabis on daily basis.

    Case 1 A 30-year-old male, presented with recent onset of palpitations. A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), and blood tests were all normal. The patient refused to have coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, thus two-stage PCI procedures without iodinated contrast media were performed after a detailed discussion with the heart team, including a chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesion in the proximal left anterior descending artery. The intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) was used for finding the entry point of the proximal fibre cap, and assessing the lesion, thereby marking the positions of the proximal and distal edges of the stent. After PCI, stent expansion and subtle edge dissection or incomplete apposition were confirmed by IVUS and ChromaFlo imaging. Zero-contrast PCI was done successfully without any complication. A 29-year-old man with a history of Graves' disease presented with chest pain and electrocardiogram changes suggestive of an infero-lateral ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Thyroid function tests showed a significantly raised free T4 and undetectable thyroid-stimulating hormone. We describe three cases of cannabis-related malignant arrhythmias, who presented to the cardiac department at our institution within the last 2 years. All three patients were known to smoke cannabis on daily basis. Case 1 A 30-year-old male, presented with recent onset of palpitations. A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), and blood tests were all normal. We analyzed the total sales costs and market share of AODs including bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonins, and denosumab using the number of days of therapy (DOT). Changes of prescription patterns including original versus generic drugs, vitamin D combination, and types of medical institutions were also analyzed.

    Bisphosphonates were the most frequently used drug during the study period although its DOT declined from 92.5% in 2008 to 80.0% in 2018. SERMs were the second-most used medication, and has maintained around 13% since 2015. The proportion of calcitonins has decreased since 2011, mainly due to malignancy risk. In contrast, the DOT of PTH and denosumab increased to 0.8% and 4.7% in 2018, respectively. The use of generics, vitamin D combination, and intravenous bisphosphonates has been increasing throughout the study period.

    Osteoporosis and fracture are known complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We assessed the prevalence and risk factors for osteoporosis in patients with SLE.

    A total of 155 female SLE patients were recruited retrospectively in 5 university hospitals. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) for high-risk osteoporotic fractures was calculated with and without BMD.

    The mean age was 53.7±6.8 years, and osteoporotic fractures were detected in 19/127 (15.0%) patients. The proportion of patients having a high-risk for osteoporotic fractures in the FRAX with and without BMD, and osteoporosis by the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were 25 (16.1%), 24 (15.5%), and 51 (32.9%), respectively, and 48.0-68.6% of them were receiving treatment. On multivariate logistic analysis, nephritis (odds ratio [OR] 11.35) and cumulative dose of glucocorticoid (OR 1.1) were associated with high-risk by the FRAX with BMD, and low complement levels (OR 4.38), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (OR 1.04), and cumulative dose of glucocorticoid (OR 1.05) were associated with osteoporosis by the WHO criteria in patients with SLE.

    Our systematic molecular epidemiological study showed that particulate matter components could induce increased oxidative stress on DNA and lipid. It may be more important to monitor and control the harmful compositions in PM rather than overall particulate mass.In this paper, a well typed phoswich detector consisting of CsI and plastic scintillators has been designed. This detector can measure Beta and Gamma rays simultaneously. Beta signals, Gamma signals and combination signals can be distinguished using Pulse Shape Analysis. 137Cs, 241Am and 133Ba radioactive sources have been used to test this detector. It clearly shows that this phosiwch detector can be used for low level radioactivity measurement with Beta-Gamma coincidence method.This paper will discuss the complexity of the investigation of mass graves in today's Serbia (part of ex Yugoslavia), belonging primarily to WWII with an exception of one mass grave from WWI, through the prism of historical events behind it. By interpreting historical and political circumstances, we will show why and on what occasions mass graves, as cultural-historical monuments and symbols of the sufferings of Serbs, Jews, Romani, and other nations or ethnic groups, remained outside the focus of expert teams. Also, through examples of explored sites related to WWII (Višnjica, Topola, Kragujevac, Ada Ciganlija), it will be shown the importance of engaging the forensic expert teams to locate sites, identifing victims and interpretation of historical events from their perspective.Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to regulate many physiological processes of plants. In this study, we observed that 0.2 mM sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a donor of H2S, can regulate the root architecture of peach seedlings, increasing the number of lateral roots by 40.63%. To investigate the specific mechanisms by which H2S regulates root growth in peach, we used RNA sequencing and heterologous expression technology. Our results showed that exogenous H2S led to a 44.50% increase in the concentration of endogenous auxin. Analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that 963 and 1113 genes responded to H2S on days one and five of treatment, respectively. Among the DEGs, 26 genes were involved in auxin biosynthesis, transport, and signal transduction. Using weighted correlation network analysis, we found that the auxin-related genes in the H2S-specific gene module were disproportionately involved in polar transport, which may play an important role in H2S-induced root growth. In addition, we observed that the expression of LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN 16 (PpLBD16) was significantly up-regulated by exogenous application of H2S in peach. Overexpression of PpLBD16 in an Arabidopsis system yielded a 66.83% increase in the number of lateral roots. Under exposure to exogenous H2S, there was also increased expression of genes related to cell proliferation, indicating that H2S regulates the growth of peach roots. Our work represents the first comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of the effects of exogenous application of H2S on the roots of peach, and provides new insights into the mechanisms underlying H2S-induced root growth.The global annual loss in agricultural production resulting from soil salinization is significant. Although nitrate (NO3-) is known to play both nutritional and osmotic roles in the salt tolerance of halophytes, it remains unclear how halophytes such as Suaeda salsa L. take up NO3- under saline conditions. In the present study, the gene of nitrate transporter 2.1 (SsNRT2.1) was cloned from S. salsa and its function was identified in both S. salsa and Arabidopsis thaliana under salinity and low NO3--N (0.5 mM NO3-) conditions. The results revealed that SsNRT2.1 expression and NO3- concentration in the roots of S. salsa were higher at 200 mM NaCl, compared with that at 0 and 500 mM NaCl after 24 h treatment. The Arabidopsis overexpression lines showed a higher NO3- content compared to the WT lines at 0 and 50 mM NaCl. A similar trend was observed in the root length. In conclusion, salinity promoted the SsNRT2.1 expression in S. salsa, suggesting that this gene may contribute to the efficient NO3- uptake in S. salsa under low NO3- and high salinity conditions. Tuberculosis is chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), which infects specifically macrophages. Hif-1, hypoxia-inducible factor-1, was reported to act as master regulator of killing functions in macrophages. To investigate whether Hif-1 activation would enhance bactericidal effect of macrophages and anti-tuberculosis effect of chemical reagent. Hif-1 and LC3B were detected in tissues from pulmonary tuberculosis. U937, human monocytic leukemia cell line, was stimulated with PMA and differentiated into macrophages. Cells were pretreated with Hif-1 chemical inhibitor YC-1, stimulated with CoCl (Hif-1 activator), to detect LC3B with Western blot and confocal microscopy. Cells were infected with M. tb H37Rv strain, stimulated with CoCl , following rifampine treatment. Expression of autophagy markers was detected using Western blot. IL-6 and TNF-α were detected in cell supernatant with ELISA. Acid-fast staining and CFU assay were performed to evaluate intracellular bacterial load. Hif-1 and LC3B increased in tissues of pulmonary tuberculosis.
