PURPOSE To introduce a novel in vivo method (Visual Acuity Dry Up; VADU) for testing the visual performance during the dewetting of the pre-lens tear film on a contact lens (CL). METHODS Thirty-nine subjects were fitted with daily disposable CL (Nelfilcon A). Visual performance and dewetting characteristics of the pre-lens tear film were simultaneously assessed using a modified multifunctional topographer (Keratograph 5 M, OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, GERMANY) and the Non-Invasive Keratograph Dry-Up Time (NIKDUT) method. Measures were taken after five minutes and eight hours of CL wear and included the Visual Acuity Dry-Up Time (VADUT; time between last blink and visual breakdown) and the Visual Acuity Dry-Up Area (VADUA; dewetted CL area at visual breakdown) at one (VA+0.1logMAR), two (VA+0.2logMAR) and three (VA+0.3logMAR) log units below maximal visual acuity (VA). RESULTS Participants lost one, two or three log units of VA after 13.1 ± 17.4 s, 20.83 ± 21.81, 34.67 ± 29.11 (VADUT), corresponding to a dewetted CL area of 4.82 ± 6.64 mm², 9.5 ± 8.26 and 13.0 ± 8.68 (VADUA), respectively. Differences in VADUT und VADUA for all visual requirements were significant (all p 0.05). A median VA loss of one log unit occurred five seconds after the first dewetting. CONCLUSIONS The novel VADU method can be used to analyze the role of the tear film stability on the visual performance during CL wear. Hereby, visual loss is quantified based on the threshold definition of the psychometric function. BACKGROUND Few effective treatments are available for male pattern hair loss (MPHL) and especially for female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Recently, cell-based therapies using autologous or allogeneic cells have been used clinically. OBJECTIVE We examined the safety and efficacy of autologous cell-based therapy using dermal sheath cup (DSC) cells to treat MPHL and FPHL. METHODS DSCs dissected from occipital hair follicles were cultured to manufacture DSC cells. Subjects with MPHL or FPHL received single injections of 7.5x106, 1.5x106 or 3.0x105 DSC cells or a placebo in 4 randomized separate regions on their scalp, and hair densities and diameters were measured until 12 months later. RESULTS Fifty males and 15 females aged 33 to 64 were injected with DSC cells. Total hair density and cumulative hair diameter at the 3.0x105DSC cells injection site was significantly increased compared with the placebo after 6 and 9 months. Men and women showed similar improvements and there were no serious adverse events. LIMITATIONS No lower cell numbers were tested, and the positive effect was temporary until 9 months. CONCLUSION The results suggest that cell therapy with autologous DSC cells may be useful as a new therapeutic method for treating MPHL and FPHL. Diagnostic accuracy of RCM for melanoma diagnosis, RCM Lip Score previously reported and kappa values between techniques were calculated. RESULTS Five melanomas and 46 benign PLM were included. Dermoscopically, melanomas exhibited more frequently ≥3 colors and ≥3 structures. With RCM, pagetoid spreading, epithelial disarray, continuous proliferation of atypical cells around papillae, non-homogeneously distributed papillae, marked cellular atypia and higher number of dendritic cells per papillae were more frequent in melanomas. The RCM Lip Score was significantly higher in malignant lesions. Good kappa values were observed in most of the evaluated features. A perfect sensitivity and specificity was obtained combining dermoscopy and RCM. LIMITATIONS A low number of melanomas were obtained. CONCLUSIONS RCM improves lip melanoma diagnosis and the RCM Lip score represents a useful tool for the evaluation of a PLM. Reports of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease in former athletes have increased public concern about the acute and chronic effects of sport-related concussions (SRC). The biological factors underlying individual differences in the psychiatric sequalae of SRC and their role in potential long-term negative outcomes have not been determined. One understudied biological consequence of the known inflammatory response to concussion is the activation of a key immunoregulatory pathway, the kynurenine pathway (KP). Activation of the KP produces several neuroactive metabolites that have been associated with psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. We tested the hypothesis that SRC results in an elevation of serum KP metabolites with neurotoxic properties (quinolinic acid [QuinA], 3-hydroxykynurenine [3HK]) together with a reduction in the neuroprotective metabolite kynurenic acid (KynA), and that these metabolites would predict post-concussion psychological symptoms. Additionally, because brain injury is thouetes with SRC at the early-acute visit relative to later visits. Importantly, athletes with greater elevation in this neuroprotective index at the early-acute visit reported fewer depressive symptoms at the late-acute visit. Finally, SRC athletes with prior concussion had significantly lower serum KynA/QuinA at all visits compared to SRC athletes with no prior concussion, an effect driven by elevated QuinA in SRC athletes with prior concussion. These results suggest that early-acute activation of the KynA branch of the KP may protect against the development of depressive symptoms following concussion. Furthermore, they highlight the potential of serum QuinA as a biomarker for repetitive head injury and provide insight into possible mechanisms linking prior concussion with subsequent injury. OEA treatment significantly resulted in decreased serum levels of triglyceride (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ALT/AST, increased serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and improved appetite sensations. Importantly, a significant improvement in TG, ALT, AST, ALT/AST, HDL-C levels as well as appetite sensations by OEA were under the influence of body mass index (BMI). Although liver steatosis severity was significantly reduced in both groups, the between-group differences did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.061). In conclusion, the present study, for the first time, revealed that OEA supplementation significantly improved anthropometric and metabolic risk factors related to NAFLD. Curcumin (Cur) is an active derivative extracted from turmeric which exerts a wide range of interactions with biomolecules through complex signaling pathways. Cur has been extensively shown to possess potential antitumor properties. In addition, there is growing body of evidence suggesting that Cur may exert potential anti-estrogen and anti-androgen activity. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that anticancer properties of Cur against tumors affecting the reproductive system in females and males may be underlied by the Cur-mediated inhibition of androgen and estrogen signaling pathways. In this review we examine various studies assessing the crosstalk between Cur and both androgen and estrogen hormonal activity. Also, we discuss the potential chemopreventive and antitumor role of Cur in the most prevalent cancers affecting the reproductive system in females and males. Furthermore, prevalent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) and hepatitis B (HBV) co-infections highlight an immediate need for dual long-acting and easily administered antivirals. To this end, we modified lamivudine (3TC), a nucleoside analog inhibitor of both viruses, into a lipophilic monophosphorylated prodrug (M23TC). Prior work demonstrated that nanoformulation of M23TC (NM23TC) enhanced drug stability, controlled dissolution and improved access to sites of viral replication. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a NM23TC in HBV-infected chimeric liver humanized ****. Levels of HBV DNA and HBsAg in plasma were monitored up to 8weeks posttreatment. A single intramuscular dose of 75mg/kg 3TC equivalents of nanoformulated NM23TC provided sustained drug levels and suppressed HBV replication in humanized **** for 4weeks. However, the question whether an opioid system exists and functions in non-mammalian vertebrates including birds remains largely unknown. Here, we cloned genes encoding opioid system from the chicken brain and examined their functionality and tissue expression. As in mammals, 6 opioid peptides encoded by PENK (Met-enkephalin and Leu-enkephalin), POMC (β-endorphin), PDYN (dynorphin-A and dynorphin-B) and PNOC (nociceptin) precursors and four opioid receptors were found to be highly conserved in chickens. Using pGL3-CRE-luciferase and pGL4-SRE-luciferase reporter systems, we demonstrated that chicken opioid receptors (cDOR, cMOR, cKOR and cORL1) expressed in CHO cells, could be differentially activated by chicken opioid peptides, and resulted in the inhibition of cAMP/PKA and activation of MAPK signaling pathways. cDOR is potently activated by Met-enkephalin and Leu-enkephalin, and cKOR is potently activated by dynorphin-A, dynorphin-B and nociceptin, whereas cORL1 is specifically activated by nociceptin. Unlike cDOR, cKOR and cORL1, cMOR is moderately/weakly activated by enkephalins and other opioid peptides. These findings suggest the ligand-receptor pair in chicken opioid system is similar, but not identical to, that in mammals. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed that the opioid system is mainly expressed in chicken central nervous system including the hypothalamus. Collectively, our data will help to facilitate the better understanding of the conserved roles of opioid system across vertebrates. MS-275 has been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells in our previous study, but its role in ESCC remains to be further explored. Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, DDP) is the first-line chemotherapeutic drug widely used in clinic for ESCC patients. However, the side effects of nephrotoxicity and drug resistance limit its clinical use. This study aimed to evaluate the anticancer effects of MS-275 combined with DDP on ESCC cell line EC9706 both in vitro and in vivo, and to investigate the possible mechanisms that mediate these effects. We found that MS-275 combined with DDP showed synergistic antitumor effects on EC9706 cells in vitro by decreasing cell proliferation, increasing apoptosis and oxidative damage, and inhibiting migration and stemness. The combination of MS-275 and DDP triggered pro-survival autophagy in EC9706. Moreover, MS-275 combined with DDP suppressed EC9706 xenografts growth and promoted apoptosis in vivo. Further study displayed that MS-275 combined with DDP suppressed Wnt/β-catenin signaling in EC9706 cells and xenografts. These results indicate that MS-275 combined with DDP exerts synergistic antitumor effects by enhancing the chemosensitivity of EC9706 cells to DDP, which may be a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of patients with ESCC. The nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in regulating many physiological processes such as development, inflammation, apoptosis, cell proliferation, differentiation and immune responses. And the NF-κB/Rel family members were considered as the most important transcription factors in the NF-κB signaling pathway. In this study, we cloned a Rel homolog gene (named as CgRel2) from the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The 2115-bp open reading frame (ORF) encodes 704 amino acids and CgRel2 possesses a conserved Rel Homology Domain (RHD) at the N-terminus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CgRel2 is most closely related to Pinctada fucata dorsal protein. CgRel2 transcripts are widely expressed in all tested tissues, with the highest expression observed in the labial palp and the gill. Moreover, the expression of CgRel2 is significantly upregulated after lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan (PGN), and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly(IC)] challenge. CgRel2 transfection into human cell lines activated NF-κB, TNFα and oyster IL-17 (CgIL-17) reporter genes in a dose-dependent manner, while CgRel2 overexpression cannot induce ISRE (Interferon stimulation response element) reporter gene's transcriptional activity.

The nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in regulating many physiological processes such as development, inflammation, apoptosis, cell proliferation, differentiation and immune responses. And the NF-κB/Rel family members were considered as the most important transcription factors in the NF-κB signaling pathway. In this study, we cloned a Rel homolog gene (named as CgRel2) from the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The 2115-bp open reading frame (ORF) encodes 704 amino acids and CgRel2 possesses a conserved Rel Homology Domain (RHD) at the N-terminus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CgRel2 is most closely related to Pinctada fucata dorsal protein. CgRel2 transcripts are widely expressed in all tested tissues, with the highest expression observed in the labial palp and the gill. Moreover, the expression of CgRel2 is significantly upregulated after lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan (PGN), and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly(IC)] challenge. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the anti-diabetic efficacy of orally administered bee wax coated water-soluble fraction of bee venom (BWCBVA) drug over orally administered bee wax (BW) and intraperitoneally administered whole bee venom (BV) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. METHODS Diabetes induced by intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg STZ was treated with BWCBVA, BW, and BV for 21 d. The biochemical, protein and histological changes, and physical characteristics of BWCBVA were then analyzed. RESULTS The BWCBVA group shows significantly decreased blood glucose level as compared to the BW and intraperitoneally administered whole BV treated group. Moreover, BWCBVA significantly normalizes the serum biochemical parameters and increases the body weight. Also, administration of BWCBVA significantly reverses the altered liver expression of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinases-p85 and liver glucokinase. Histological analysis of the pancreas an increase in the islet cell numbers and decrease in β-cell damage. Co-administering BWCBVA 0.25 mg/kg with nifedipine (6.8 mg/kg) and nicorandil (13.8 mg/kg) to the diabetic rats results in insulin secretion through enhanced calcium ion influx. High performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography was performed to identify the pharmacologically important compounds present in BWCBVA. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that BWCBVA, an orally administered colon specific drug delivery system, can be effective in treating diabetes mellitus.OBJECTIVE To investigate the optimal timing and underlying mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) at Baihui (GV 20) and Dazhui (GV 14) for improved long-term functional recovery after focal cerebral ischemia in a photothrombotic stroke mouse model. METHODS Totally 50 adult male C57BL/6J **** were assigned into 5 groups (a) the control group, sham-operated **** (n = 10); (b) the vehicle group, focal cerebral ischemia induction without EA (n = 10); (c) the acute EA group, **** received EA immediately post-ischemia, followed by once-daily treatments for 7 consecutive days (n = 10); (d) the subacute EA group, **** received EA 4 days post-ischemia, followed by once-daily treatments for 7 consecutive days (n = 10); (e) the delayed EA group. EA stimulation (2 Hz, 2 V for 20 min) was applied to acupuncture points (acupoints), Baihui (GV 20) and Dazhui (GV 14), once a day for 7 consecutive days beginning immediately (acute treatment), 4 d (subacute treatment) and 10 d (delayed treatment) after focal cerebral ischemia in C57BL/6J ****. Behavioral assessments were conducted 21 and 28 d post-ischemia and histopathological analyses were performed 28 days post-ischemia. RESULTS The subacute EA treatment at Baihui (GV 20) and Dazhui (GV 14) significantly improved functional recovery compared to the vehicle group 28 d after ischemic brain injury, although brain atrophy was not reduced. The number of NeuN+ and NeuN+/BrdU+ cells as well as GFAP intensity in the ipsilateral cortex were significantly increased in the subacute group compared to the vehicle group 28 d post-ischemia. We concluded that EA stimulation 4 d post-ischemia (subacute treatment) enhanced neurogenesis and astrogliosis, likely contributing to long-term functional recovery following focal cerebral ischemia. And expression changes of cyclin- dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1) and leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (Lrrk2) were restored by SFme. Analysis of brain-behavioral markers before and after CBT will assess mechanisms of CBT effect, and will be conducted once the data collection in the full sample has been completed. This knowledge will help guide the treatment of clinically anxious youth by informing for whom and how does CBT work.Background/Aims To analyse the complications and outcomes of vitrectomy surgery for endophthalmitis. Methods This was a retrospective case series. All cases that underwent 23-gauge vitrectomy surgery for endophthalmitis at a tertiary centre between 1 February 2013 and 1 February 2018 were included. Main outcome measures were as follows visual acuity (VA) at final visit and post-vitrectomy complications. Results 33 patients were included in the study with 20 men and 13 women, average age 63 years. Main post-surgical causes for endophthalmitis included phacoemulsification (n=9), trabeculectomy (n=5), intravitreal injection (n=5), corneal graft (n=4), vitreoretinal surgery (n=3) and endogenous endophthalmitis (n=6). Average follow-up was 18 months (SD 14). 21/33 (64%) patients had baseline perception of light VA. Analysis of exogenous endophthalmitis cases only demonstrated mean LogMAR VA improved significantly from 2.68 to 1.66 (p=0.001). At final follow-up, 12% had VA of 6/12 or better, and 28% had VA of 6/36 or better. Vitrectomy within 7 days resulted in improved final VA outcomes (1.49 vs 2.16 LogMAR, p=0.032). Complications included retinal detachment (24.2%), macular hole (3%), hypotony (6%), suprachoroidal haemorrhage (3%) and enucleation/evisceration (6%). Conclusion Vitrectomy for endophthalmitis leads to VA gains in some cases. Surgical outcomes may be improved with early vitrectomy performed within 7 days of the initial event for exogenous endophthalmitis. Results from colon transcriptome and proteome profiles showed that WOL supplementation significantly ameliorated the expression of genes and proteins associated with the integrity of the colonic mucosal wall and colonic inflammation. Based on the hepatic transcriptome, proteome and metabolome data, genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, proteins involved in inflammation and metabolites related to glycolysis were downregulated in WOL ****, leading to lowered inflammation and changes in these molecules may have led to improvement in body weight loss. In addition, his blood culture was positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae, and we finally diagnosed Streptococcus pneumoniae-associated TMA (pTMA). The patient was treated with antibiotics and hemodialysis. The patient recovered and was discharged on the 45th hospital day. Adult pTMA cases are remarkably rare. Pulmonary lobectomy is a high-risk procedure, which ERAS is intended to address. Objective We evaluated the application of ERAS to patients with lung cancer. Interventions/Methods Of 337 patients who underwent pulmonary lobectomies for lung cancer at our hospital, 168 received traditional perioperative nursing, and 169 received ERAS. Their complication rates, numerical rating scale of pain (NRS), satisfaction with care, demographics and some inpatient indices before and after surgery were compared. Results The two groups did not significantly differ in general data or NRS score at 6 post-operative hours (P = 0.214) and 1 post-operative day (POD; P = 0.027). The ERAS group had lower incidence of postoperative lung complication (P = 0.008), shorter length of stay (P less then 0.001), shorter enterokinesia recovery times (P less then 0.001), lower hospitalization costs (P less then 0.001), lower NRS scores at POD 2-5 (P less then 0.001), higher nursing satisfaction (P less then 0.001), and higher postoperative pulmonary function indices of maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV; P less then 0.001), forced vital capacity (FVC; P = 0.002), and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1; P = 0.002) than did the traditional group. Conclusion ERAS is applicable to lung surgery patients. Implications for Practice Applying ERAS to thoracic surgery patients can alleviate their postoperative pain, shorten enterokinesia recovery, lower postoperative complication incidence, reduce hospitalization expenses, and raise nursing satisfaction, thereby expediting recovery. © 2020 Feng Chen and Gongchao Wang, published by De Gruyter.

Pulmonary lobectomy is a high-risk procedure, which ERAS is intended to address. Objective We evaluated the application of ERAS to patients with lung cancer. Interventions/Methods Of 337 patients who underwent pulmonary lobectomies for lung cancer at our hospital, 168 received traditional perioperative nursing, and 169 received ERAS. Their complication rates, numerical rating scale of pain (NRS), satisfaction with care, demographics and some inpatient indices before and after surgery were compared. Results The two groups did not significantly differ in general data or NRS score at 6 post-operative hours (P = 0.214) and 1 post-operative day (POD; P = 0.027). The ERAS group had lower incidence of postoperative lung complication (P = 0.008), shorter length of stay (P less then 0.001), shorter enterokinesia recovery times (P less then 0.001), lower hospitalization costs (P less then 0.001), lower NRS scores at POD 2-5 (P less then 0.001), higher nursing satisfaction (P less then 0.001), and higher postoperative pulmonary function indices of maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV; P less then 0.001), forced vital capacity (FVC; P = 0.002), and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1; P = 0.002) than did the traditional group. Conclusion ERAS is applicable to lung surgery patients. Our previous studies showed that the σ54 factor RpoN2 regulated bacterial virulence on rice in a flagellum-independent manner in Xoo. In this study, both yeast two-hybrid and pull-down assays revealed that RpoN2 directly and specifically interacted with PilRX, a homolog of the response regulator PilR of the two-component system PilS-PilR in the pilus gene cluster. Genomic sequence and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) analysis showed 13 regulons containing 25 genes encoding T4P structural components and putative regulators. A consensus RpoN2-binding sequence GGN10 GC was identified in the promoter sequences of most T4P gene transcriptional units. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed the direct binding of RpoN2 to the promoter of the major pilin gene pilAX, the inner membrane platform protein gene pilCX, and pilRX. Promoter activity and quantitative RT-PCR assays demonstrated direct and indirect transcriptional regulation by RpoN2 of the T4P genes. In addition, individual deletions of pilAX, pilCX, and pilRX resulted in significantly reduced twitching and swimming motility, biofilm formation, and virulence in rice. RESULTS Older age (HR 1.49 for each decade; 95% CI 0.95, 2.35; P = .083) and tacrolimus use (HR 20.6; 95% CI 2.37, 179.53; P = .006) were associated with increased incidence of BKV, but not CMV, infection. These methods have been performed on density-separated FCC catalyst fractions, allowing to determine interparticle heterogeneities in the catalyst under study. It was found that with increasing catalyst density and metal content, the acidity and accessibility of the catalyst particles decreased, while their distribution narrowed with catalyst age. For example, particles containing high Ni level possessed very low acidity and were hardly accessible by a Nile Blue dye. Cases of severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia were randomly sampled and relevant quality of care data extracted from medical records at baseline (n=111) from January 1, 2011, to March 31, 2013, and at second-phase follow-up (n=249) from June 1, 2015, to September 30, 2017. The primary outcome was evidence of the delivery of multidimensional care for the management of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. RESULTS The care of 360 women with severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia was analyzed. Odds of multidimensional care for pre-eclampsia management (P=0.271) increased (although not significantly) in the second-phase follow-up compared to baseline. Multidimensional care was significantly associated with training (P less then 0.001), basic-level facilities (P less then 0.001), and higher in Honduras (P=0.001) and Belize (P=0.024) than the reference country of Nicaragua. CONCLUSION Multidimensional care for pre-eclampsia management increased across all facility types, countries, and severity of disease. We also present data on divergent tree topologies produced by alignments using de novo and reference genome approaches and distinct phylogenetic methods (maximum likelihood and coalescent approaches). These data provide the first highly resolved phylogenetic tree for Molossus, not recovered by previous studies using Sanger sequencing. We have revealed approximately 28 viral families, among which the bacteriophages of the Myoviridae, Siphoviridae and Podoviridae families, as well as the viruses of the Phycodnaviridae and Poxviridae families, dominated in the samples. However, there is need to generate transcriptome data from representative species of the primary salamander families. Here we describe a de novo reference transcriptome for a terrestrial salamander, Bolitoglossa vallecula (Caudata Plethodontidae). We employed paired-end (PE) illumina RNA sequencing to assemble a de novo reference transcriptome for B. vallecula. Assembled transcripts were compared against sequences from other vertebrate taxa to identify orthologous genes, and compared to the transcriptome of a close plethodontid relative (Bolitoglossa ramosi) to identify commonly expressed genes in the skin. However, there is need to generate transcriptome data from representative species of the primary salamander families. Here we describe a de novo reference transcriptome for a terrestrial salamander, Bolitoglossa vallecula (Caudata Plethodontidae). We employed paired-end (PE) illumina RNA sequencing to assemble a de novo reference transcriptome for B. vallecula. Assembled transcripts were compared against sequences from other vertebrate taxa to identify orthologous genes, and compared to the transcriptome of a close plethodontid relative (Bolitoglossa ramosi) to identify commonly expressed genes in the skin. RESULTADOS Foram avaliados 55 participantes (18 normotensos; 15 pré-hipertensos; 22 hipertensos) com mediana 48 anos (IQ39-54). Os grupos foram semelhantes em relação a idade e sexo. Não houve diferença entre medidas de PA e excreção de sódio antes e depois da intervenção. Os parâmetros de rigidez arterial também não sofreram alterações significativas. Esses pacientes apresentam várias condições clínicas, que variam desde quadro assintomático até internação hospitalar com morte cardíaca súbita. OBJETIVOS Nosso objetivo foi avaliar os achados da ressonância magnética cardíaca (RMC) com o realce tardio pelo gadolínio (RTG), como um indicador de fibrose miocárdica. Também buscamos determinar a relação entre a presença de fibrose miocárdica e os níveis de NT-proBNP em pacientes com FCL na artéria coronária descendente anterior esquerda (DAE). MÉTODOS Ao todo, 35 pacientes, entre 31 e 75 anos de idade, foram incluídos. Os pacientes estudados (n=19) apresentaram artérias coronárias epicárdicas normais na angiografia, mas tinham FCL na DAE. O grupo controle de pacientes (n=16) apresentou artérias coronárias epicárdicas normais e níveis de escore TIMI normais na angiografia. Em ambos os grupos, os pacientes foram examinados com RMC para a detecção de presença de fibrose miocárdica. Além disso, níveis plasmáticos de NT-proBNP foram medidos. Valores de p less then 0,05 foram considerados significativos. RESULTADOS A taxa de fibrose miocárdica foi significativamente maior na RMC para os pacientes com FCL (p=0.018). Uma quantidade variável de tecido cicatricial foi detectada no ápice ventricular esquerdo em 7 pacientes e nas regiões inferior e inferolateral em 3 pacientes. Não foram observadas diferenças nos níveis de NT-proBNP nos pacientes com FCL. Entretanto, os níveis de NT-proBNP foram maiores nos pacientes com FCL, que apresentaram fibrose miocárdica na RMC (p=0.022). CONCLUSÕES Em suma, o RTG na RMC mostrou que a cicatriz miocárdica isquê**** pode estar presente nos pacientes com FCL. Esses resultados indicam que o FCL pode nem sempre ser inofensivo. OBJETIVOS Descrever curvas percentílicas de referência para a circunferência abdominal (CA) nas crianças brasileiras e fornecer pontos de corte da CA para identificar crianças com risco de obesidade. MÉTODOS Um estudo multicêntrico, prospectivo, tranversal foi realizado em crianças com idades entre 6 e 10 anos, matriculadas no ensino fundamental de escolas públicas e particulares de 13 cidades do estado de São Paulo. A estatura, o peso e a CA foram medidos em duplicata em 22.000 crianças (11.199 meninos). Para estabelecer o melhor ponto de corte da CA para o diagnóstico da obesidade, foram calculadas curvas ROC com crianças classificadas como com peso normal e obesas, de acordo com as curvas do IMC, estratificadas por gênero e idade, e o índice Youden foi utilizado como a eficácia potencial máxima desse biomarcador. OBJETIVOS Avaliar o EuroSCORE logístico, o EuroSCORE II e os escores específicos para endocardite infecciosa STS-IE, PALSUSE, AEPEI, EndoSCORE e RISK-E na predição de mortalidade hospitalar de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca por endocardite ativa em um hospital terciário de ensino do sul do Brasil. MÉTODOS Estudo de coorte retrospectivo incluindo todos os pacientes com idade ≥ 18 anos submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca por endocardite ativa no centro do estudo entre 2007 e 2016. Foram realizadas análises de calibração (razão de mortalidade observada/esperada, O/E) e de discriminação (área sob a curva ROC, ASC), sendo a comparação das ASC realizada pelo teste de DeLong. P less then 0,05 foi considerado estatisticamente significativo. RESULTADOS Foram incluídos 107 pacientes, sendo a mortalidade hospitalar de 29,0% (IC95% 20.4-37.6%). A melhor razão de mortalidade O/E foi obtida pelo escore PALSUSE (1,01, IC95% 0,70-1,42), seguido pelo EuroSCORE logístico (1,3, IC95% 0,92-1,87). O EuroSCORE logístico apresentou o maior poder discriminatório (ASC 0,77), significativamente superior ao EuroSCORE II (p = 0,03), STS-IE (p = 0,03), PALSUSE (p = 0,03), AEPEI (p = 0,03) e RISK-E (p = 0,02). CONCLUSÕES Apesar da disponibilidade dos recentes escores específicos, o EuroSCORE logístico foi o melhor preditor de mortalidade em nossa coorte, considerando-se análise de calibração (mortalidade O/E 1,3) e de discriminação (ASC 0,77).
