Facilitation of cardiac function in response to signals from the sympathetic nervous system is initiated by the phosphorylation of L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCCs) by protein kinase A (PKA), which in turn is activated by β-adrenoceptors. Notably, k-means clustering via principal component analysis revealed four clusters with distinct longevity patterns in wild-type C. elegans. Physiological relevance of clustering was confirmed by assays with pharmacological and/or genetic manipulation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a crucial regulator of healthspan. Finally, we focused on W09D10.4 among the possible regulators extracted by integrative expression analysis with existing data sets. Importantly, W09D10.4 knockdown increased the high-healthspan populations only in the presence of AMPK, suggesting that W09D10.4 is a novel AMPK-associated healthspan shortening factor in C. elegans. We have also discussed current information about reactive astrocytes and their phagocytic function in the diseased brain, focusing on ischemia and Alzheimer's disease. EU member states are subject to the most stringent requirements regarding nicotine concentration regulations, and several member states have also opted to ban flavors and/or require plain packaging or out of sight retail sales. Among EU and US states, taxation is a popular strategy, though taxing strategies vary widely. Regarding youth use, US states have led the way for increasing the legal age of **** to 21 at the federal level, and in Canada recent federal regulations are innovative in their approach to banning advertising that may appeal to youth.

The long-term outcomes after transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) in adults are reported and compared between age groups and against population control patients.
ASD is the second most common lesion in congenital heart disease. Comprehensive data on long-term outcomes after ASD closure are limited.
This retrospective cohort study enrolled adult patients with secundum ASD closure between 1998 and 2016. Information from a detailed clinical registry was linked to population-based administrative databases to capture outcomes. The population control cohort was matched using important prognostic characteristics.
The cohort included 1,390 ASD patients of whom 32% were<40 years of age, 45% were 40 to 60 years of age, and 23% were >60 years of age at closure. The median follow-up was 10.6 years (interquartile range 6.2 to 14.0 years). New-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) was the most frequent outcome overall (14.9%). The incidence of adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events was higher in the >60 years of age group than in the younger groups. In adjusted analysis, patients >60 years of age continued exhibiting higher risk of all-cause (hazard ratio [HR] 8.54; 95% confidence interval [CI] 93.40 to 21.43) and cardiovascular (CV)-specific mortality compared with the<40 years of age group. The risk of new-onset AF (HR 3.73; 95%CI 2.79 to 4.98) and any AF hospitalization (HR 1.55; 95%CI 1.28 to 1.89) was higher in the ASD than in the control population, whereas there was no difference in all-cause and CV-specific mortality.

Hospitals were categorized into 3 groups on the basis of tertiles of annual procedural volume low (5 to 15 cases/year), medium (17 to 31 cases/year), and high (32 to 211 cases/year). Multivariate hierarchical logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to examine the association of hospital LAAO volume and outcomes. The primary outcome was in-hospital major adverse events (MAE), defined as a composite of mortality, stroke or transient ischemic attack, bleeding or transfusion, vascular complications, myocardial infarction, systemic embolization, and pericardial effusion or tamponade requiring pericardiocentesis or surgery.

A 67-year-old man with stage IV B lung adenocarcinoma was treated with pembrolizumab. The patient was admitted to the hospital because of influenza on the day of the second cycle of pembrolizumab treatment. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and was treated with antiviral drugs and steroids. However, the patient eventually died. In this case, treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors might have affected the immune response caused by influenza virus infection, that might have caused lung injury, which is an immune-related adverse event (irAE). Hence, it is important that, caution should be taken to prevent transmission of viral infection, and Therefore, it is important to prevent viral infections, but caution should also be paid to the possibility that infections may cause irAEs in patients with lung cancer.

While questionnaire surveys or mobility data-based systems have provided valuable insights, social media data can contribute as an additional instrument to help monitor the risk of human interactions during the pandemic. A 67-year-old man with stage IV B lung adenocarcinoma was treated with pembrolizumab. The patient was admitted to the hospital because of influenza on the day of the second cycle of pembrolizumab treatment. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and was treated with antiviral drugs and steroids. However, the patient eventually died. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with prolonged hospital stay and in-hospital mortality in patients with pyogenic liver abscess.
We retrospectively reviewed data from patients with pyogenic liver abscess who were admitted between 2005 and 2018 at three tertiary hospitals in Jeonbuk province, South Korea. Prolonged hospital stay was defined as a duration of hospital admission of more than 21 days.
A total of 648 patients (406 men and 242 women) diagnosed with pyogenic liver abscess were enrolled in the study. The mean maximal diameter of the liver abscess was 5.4 ± 2.6 cm, and 74.9% of the lesions were single. The three groups were divided according to the maximal diameter of the abscess. Laboratory parameters indicated a more severe inflammatory state and higher incidence of complications and extrahepatic manifestations with increasing abscess size. Rates of percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) insertion, multiple PCD drainage, and salvage procedures as well as duration of drainageg are warranted in patients with large liver abscesses.
Fruit abscission depends on cell separation that occurs within specialized cell layers that constitute an abscission zone (AZ). To determine the mechanisms of fleshy fruit abscission of the monocot oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) compared with other abscission systems, we performed multi-scale comparative transcriptome analyses on fruit targeting the developing primary AZ and adjacent tissues.
Combining between-tissue developmental comparisons with exogenous ethylene treatments, and naturally occurring abscission in the field, RNAseq analysis revealed a robust core set of 168 genes with differentially regulated expression, spatially associated with the ripe fruit AZ, and temporally restricted to the abscission timing. The expression of a set of candidate genes was validated by qRT-PCR in the fruit AZ of a natural oil palm variant with blocked fruit abscission, which provides evidence for their functions during abscission. Our results substantiate the conservation of gene function between dicot dry fruiight into the mechanisms underlying abscission by identifying key genes with functional roles and processes, including metabolic transitions, cell wall modifications, signalling, stress adaptations and transcriptional regulation, that occur during ripe fruit abscission of the monocot oil palm. The transcriptome data comprises an original reference and resource useful towards understanding the evolutionary basis of this fundamental plant process.
To evaluate the completeness of reporting abstracts of systematic reviews (SRs) before and after the publication of the PRISMA-A checklist in 2013 and to assess if an association exists between abstract characteristics and the completeness of reporting.
A systematic search of the literature was conducted in the PubMed and Scopus databases in March 2020. The search focused on the SRs of evaluations of interventions published since 2002 in the field of periodontology. The abstracts of the selected SRs were divided into two groups before and after publication of the PRISMA-A checklist in 2013, and compliance with the 12 items reported in the checklist was evaluated by three calibrated evaluators.
A set of 265 abstracts was included in the study. The total score before (mean score, 53.78%; 95% CI, 51.56-55.90%) and after (mean score, 56.88%; 95% CI, 55.39-58.44%) the publication of the PRISMA-A statement exhibited a statistically significant improvement (P = 0.012*). Nevertheless, only the checklist items included studies and synthesis of the results displayed a statistically significant change after guideline publication.

Down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor that is sponge-based trickling filter was considered to be an alternative aerobic treatment system for low strength sewage treatment under tropical conditions. This study aims to determine the process performance of the DHS reactor combined with a pre-treatment sedimentation tank (SED) system installed at the municipality sewage treatment plant in Khon Kaen, Thailand over, 1,600 days. The DHS reactor was operated with three operational periods low (0.2 kgBODm3 per day), high (0.5-1.3 kgBODm3 per day), and super rates (1.7-2.2. kgBODm3 per day). The results showed effective reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids by more than 74% and 78%, respectively, during the entire experimental period. Moreover, the final effluent met the Thailand discharge standard with an external short hydraulic retention time of 0.2 h. In addition, the combined system facilitates simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and effectively removed up to 43% of total nitrogen. The self-degradation of the organic compounds occurs owing to the retained sludge in the DHS reactor; this leads to undisputed clogging in sponge media. Therefore, the combined SED-DHS system could be an appropriate sewage treatment system for tropical conditions.In the era of antifungal prophylaxis for cancer patients, Fusarium genus has become the second leading cause of invasive fungal infections and mortality in this group of patients. In this report, we present a series of three cases of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and disseminated fusariosis categorized according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG). Furthermore, we present a current literature review focused on treatment using monotherapy or combined antifungal treatment.Spatial frequency analysis (SFA) is a quantitative ultrasound method that characterizes tissue organization. SFA has been used for research involving tendon injury, but may prove useful in similar research involving skeletal muscle. As a first step, we investigated if SFA could detect known architectural differences within hamstring muscles. Ultrasound B-mode images were collected bilaterally at locations corresponding to proximal, mid-belly, and distal thirds along the hamstrings from 10 healthy participants. Images were analyzed in the spatial frequency domain by applying a two-dimensional Fourier Transform in all 6.5 × 6.5 mm kernels in a region of interest corresponding to the central portion of the muscle. SFA parameters (peak spatial frequency radius [PSFR], maximum frequency amplitude [Mmax], sum of frequencies [Sum], and ratio of Mmax to Sum [Mmax%]) were extracted from each muscle location and analyzed by separate linear mixed effects models. Significant differences were observed proximo-distally in PSFR (p = .039), Mmax (p less then .0001), and Sum (p less then .0001), consistent with architectural descriptions of the hamstring muscles. The Deep Residual Networks (Resnets) are used to judge the relative orientation of the reference line and muscle fibers. Then, reference line is revised until the line is parallel to the orientation of the muscle fibers. Finally, the pennation angle is obtained according to the direction of the detected aponeuroses and the muscle fibers. The angle detected by our proposed method differs by about 1° from the angle manually labeled. With a CPU, the average inference time for a single image of the muscle fibers with the proposed method is around 1.6 s, compared to 0.47 s for one of the image of a sequential image sequence. This study aims to determine the process performance of the DHS reactor combined with a pre-treatment sedimentation tank (SED) system installed at the municipality sewage treatment plant in Khon Kaen, Thailand over, 1,600 days. The DHS reactor was operated with three operational periods low (0.2 kgBODm3 per day), high (0.5-1.3 kgBODm3 per day), and super rates (1.7-2.2. kgBODm3 per day). The results showed effective reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids by more than 74% and 78%, respectively, during the entire experimental period. Moreover, the final effluent met the Thailand discharge standard with an external short hydraulic retention time of 0.2 h. In addition, the combined system facilitates simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and effectively removed up to 43% of total nitrogen. The self-degradation of the organic compounds occurs owing to the retained sludge in the DHS reactor; this leads to undisputed clogging in sponge media. Therefore, the combined SED-DHS system could be an appropriate sewage treatment system for tropical conditions.In the era of antifungal prophylaxis for cancer patients, Fusarium genus has become the second leading cause of invasive fungal infections and mortality in this group of patients. Furthermore, we present a current literature review focused on treatment using monotherapy or combined antifungal treatment.Spatial frequency analysis (SFA) is a quantitative ultrasound method that characterizes tissue organization. SFA has been used for research involving tendon injury, but may prove useful in similar research involving skeletal muscle. As a first step, we investigated if SFA could detect known architectural differences within hamstring muscles. Ultrasound B-mode images were collected bilaterally at locations corresponding to proximal, mid-belly, and distal thirds along the hamstrings from 10 healthy participants. Images were analyzed in the spatial frequency domain by applying a two-dimensional Fourier Transform in all 6.5 × 6.5 mm kernels in a region of interest corresponding to the central portion of the muscle. SFA parameters (peak spatial frequency radius [PSFR], maximum frequency amplitude [Mmax], sum of frequencies [Sum], and ratio of Mmax to Sum [Mmax%]) were extracted from each muscle location and analyzed by separate linear mixed effects models. Significant differences were observed proximo-distally in PSFR (p = .039), Mmax (p less then .0001), and Sum (p less then .0001), consistent with architectural descriptions of the hamstring muscles. These results suggest that SFA can detect regional differences of healthy tissue structure within the hamstrings-an important finding for future research in regional muscle structure and mechanics.In this study, an automatic pennation angle measuring approach based on deep learning is proposed. Firstly, the Local Radon Transform (LRT) is used to detect the superficial and deep aponeuroses on the ultrasound image. Secondly, a reference line are introduced between the deep and superficial aponeuroses to assist the detection of the orientation of muscle fibers. The Deep Residual Networks (Resnets) are used to judge the relative orientation of the reference line and muscle fibers. Then, reference line is revised until the line is parallel to the orientation of the muscle fibers. Finally, the pennation angle is obtained according to the direction of the detected aponeuroses and the muscle fibers. The angle detected by our proposed method differs by about 1° from the angle manually labeled. Most studies conducted in the West on the role played by intergenerational families in co-parenting have focused mostly on families with a single mother or those in difficult circumstances, while little is known about the experiences of members of intergenerational intact families during the early postpartum period. This study aimed to explore the intergenerational co-parenting experiences of young parents and grandmothers in China, focusing on how they shared the responsibility of caring for the new mother and infant during the postpartum period. A total of 16 eligible intergenerational intact families, including 16 mothers, 15 fathers and 12 grandmothers, were interviewed. The data set was analysed using the approach of directed content analysis guided by Feinberg's Ecological Model of Co-parenting. The data were categorized into four themes 'division of labour', 'postpartum and infant care agreement', 'support-undermining' and 'joint family management'. An additional theme, 'expressed a need for family support', emerged from the data on these intergenerational families. The findings emphasize the importance of intergenerational co-parenting relationships in families where two generations co-parent the newborn together.Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is a rare entity, with limited data on the outcome in the relapsed/refractory setting. Two experiments investigated the potential of decision aids (DAs) in preparing patients for SDM by raising awareness of preference-sensitivity (Study 1) and showing possible personal motives for decision making (Study 2) in addition to providing information about the treatment options.
Participants (Study 1 N=117; Study 2 N=217) were put into two scenarios (Study 1 cruciate ligament rupture; Study 2 contraception), watched a consultation video and were randomized into one of three groups where they received additional information in the form of (a) narrative patient testimonials; (b) non-narrative decision strategies; and (c) an unrelated text (control group).

Decision aids that explain preference-sensitivity and personal motives can be beneficial for improving people's feelings of being prepared and their perception of the decision-making process. To reach decision certainty and satisfaction, being well informed of one's options is particularly relevant. We discuss the implications of our findings for future research and the design of DAs.Antifragility is a property of things that benefit from shocks, randomness and uncertainty and love adventure and risk. This describes emergency medicine. Improving evidence-based medicine requires a learning health system, where the whole system is constructed to advance patient care via research driven excellence. So we need to develop our own evidence base by embedding research into everyday practice. Clinical research is messy but the repeated stress testing of clinical practice via research enhances our antifragility. This is even more important because our world is complex, as are humans. Unfortunately, the human brain is hard wired for simplicity, making us disinclined to challenge the status quo. Yet probably less then 10% of our practice is supported by high-level evidence. Research is altruistic and a form of kindness for our patients, which includes having a culture of research within a learning health system, so that we can be thoughtful!Upper eyelid surgery is a common procedure performed by a variety of subspecialists including facial plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, general otolaryngologists, and plastic surgeons. Traditionally, a skin incision is marked in the preoperative setting to allow for an excision that eliminates upper eyelid hooding while preventing lagophthalmos. Many different methodologies have been proposed to maximize results and minimize complications. In this article, the authors propose a unique way to safely and effectively address dermatochalasis. The pinch technique allows for an accurate assessment of excess skin and provides a method that requires less operative time than traditional techniques. The use of both local anesthetic with epinephrine and hyaluronidase helps achieve the appropriate plane and attain better hemostasis. Importantly, the presented technique allows for reassessment and revision of the amount of skin excision before incision creation. It is a useful methodology for any surgeon performing upper lid blepharoplasty.

Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is one of the most feared complications of diabetes. In Sudan, the number of cases and the problems associated with diabetic foot infections increased in recent years. This study aimed to assess the bacteriological profile of patients with DFIs and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern.
A descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out at Surgery Department of Ribat University Hospital. All medical records of patients with DFIs during the period from September 2017 to February 2019 were reviewed using data collection sheet. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
Out of 250 DFI patients, 73.2% of them were males, and 86.4% of them had type 2 diabetes mellitus, and most of them suffered from diabetes for more than 10years. Regarding culture results, 64.7% and 35.3% of the samples revealed presence of single microorganism and mixed infections, respectively. A total of 335 bacterial isolates were identified, gram-negative were more prevalent than gram-positive organisms. The most frequently isolated organisms were

Phytochemicals of ethno medicines are being developed as effective drugs with minimum or no toxic side effects. Dhanwantaram Kashayam (DK) is a polyherbal formulation used as a potent general health tonic and is found to have antioxidant activities, but there are no proper scientific studies on its possible benefits. In this study we investigated the antioxidant and antidiabetic properties of DK and trying to explore the possibility of employing DK for the treatment of diseases like diabetes mellitus caused by the imbalance in Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
We investigated the effect of DK on normal and rat model of diabetes. Rats were fed with DK for 21days. Fasting blood glucose level, haemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin, non enzymatic antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, reduced glutathione, and MDA were evaluated.
DK was found to ameliorate the disease symptoms of diabetes. A significant decrease in non enzymatic antioxidants - vitamin C, vitamin E, reduced glutathione and an increase in MDA and fasting blood glucose level was observed in diabetic rats. Administration of DK resulted significant increase in non enzymatic antioxidant levels both in diabetic and normal rats and a decrease in MDA, fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and HOMA-IR index was observed.
This study reveals the protective role of DK in diabetic condition through its antioxidant and antihyperglycemic activity. Our results strongly indicate the possibility of DK being developed as a potent antidiabetic drug. DK could be an alternative in the treatment of diseases with ROS imbalance to expensive and toxic synthetic 'medicines'.

Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) refers to a cerebellum of reduced volume with preserved shape. CH is associated with a broad heterogeneity in neuroradiologic features, etiologies, clinical characteristics, and neurodevelopmental outcomes, challenging physicians evaluating children with CH. Traditionally, neuroimaging has been a key tool to categorize CH based on the pattern of cerebellar involvement (e.g., hypoplasia of cerebellar vermis only vs. hypoplasia of both the vermis and cerebellar hemispheres) and the presence of associated brainstem and cerebral anomalies. With the advances in genetic technologies of the recent decade, many novel CH genes have been identified, and consequently, a constant updating of the literature and revision of the classification of cerebellar malformations are needed. Here, we review the current literature on CH. We propose a systematic approach to recognize specific neuroimaging patterns associated with CH, based on whether the CH is isolated or associated with posterior cerebrospinal fluid anomalies, specific brainstem or cerebellar malformations, brainstem hypoplasia with or without cortical migration anomalies, or dysplasia. The CH radiologic pattern and clinical assessment will allow the clinician to guide his investigations and genetic testing, give a more precise diagnosis, screen for associated comorbidities, and improve prognostication of associated neurodevelopmental outcomes.
To develop an ex- vivo perfusion flow model using a bovine kidney for future testing of embolic agents in an inexpensive and easy way.
Six bovine adult kidneys were used for this study. Kidneys were cannulated and perfused via a roller pump. Three embolic agents, coils, Gelfoam, and a glue mixture of Histoacryl + Lipiodol, were deployed by targeting three secondary segmental arteries per kidney via a 5Fr catheter under fluoroscopic guidance. Cannulation time, success rate of segmental artery selection and embolic agent deployment, total operational time, and fluoroscopy dose were recorded.
Average kidney weight was 0.752 +/- 0.094 kg. All six bovine kidneys were successfully cannulated in 21.6 min +/- 3.0 min. Deployment of coils and glue was achieved in every case (12/12); however, Gelfoam injection was not successful in one instance (5/6, 83%). Coil deployment demonstrated no embolic effect while Gelfoam and glue injections demonstrated decreased distal contrast filling post-embolization. Mean dose area product was 12.9 ± 1.8 Gy·cm2, fluoroscopy time was 10 ±4 min and operational time was 27 ±8 min.

Immunofluorescence co-localization analysis confirmed LHBs and MHBs colocalized with ATP1B3 together. Our work provides important information for targeting ATP1B3 as a potential therapeutic molecule for HBV infection.

Food niche overlap statistics are a common way to show competition for food resources in a group of animals. Niche breadths of various species are very variable and their diet composition changes reflecting prey availability. The aim of this study was to evidence the food niche overlap of the whole assemblage of avian predators (eight raptor and owl species, some of them reaching very high densities) in a field and forest mosaic of central Poland. The diet composition was assessed on the basis of pellet analyses and the identification of prey remains found under the nests in the breeding period. The extent of the niche overlap was calculated using a Pianka formula. The food niche overlap indices ranged from 0.02 to 0.93 (mostly below 0.5). The most separate food niche was that of the white-tailed eagle, who regularly preyed on fish. The highest niche overlap was recorded for the common buzzard and common kestrel, two species preying on field rodents, switching to soricomorphs when the former were scarce. Total circulating RNA was isolated from patients using the miRNeasy Serum/Plasma Kit. Serum miRNA expression levels were significantly different in the three groups. In detail, circulating hsa-miR-15a-5p levels were significantly reduced in both diabetic patients without DR and diabetic patients with DR (p = 0.027). Serum hsa-miR-495-3p was lower in diabetic patients with DR and diabetic patients without DR (p = 0.049). Hsa-miR-23a-3p serum expression levels were significantly lower in diabetic patients with DR and diabetic patients without DR (p = 0.013). Significant associations of miRNAs with anatomical/perfusion parameters and functional parameters were observed in the diabetic groups. The clinical heterogeneity of SRS is reflected by a broad spectrum of molecular changes with hypomethylation in 11p15 and maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (upd(7)mat) as the most frequent findings. Monogenetic causes are rare, but a clinical overlap with numerous other disorders has been reported. However, a comprehensive overview on the contribution of mutations in differential diagnostic genes to phenotypes reminiscent to SRS is missing due to the lack of appropriate tests. With the implementation of next generation sequencing (NGS) tools this limitation can now be circumvented.
We analysed 75 patients referred for molecular testing for SRS by a NGS-based multigene panel, whole exome sequencing (WES), and trio-based WES. In 21/75 patients a disease-causing variant could be identified among them variants in known SRS genes (IGF2, PLAG1, HMGA2). Several patients carried variants in genes which have not yet been considered as differential diagnoses of SRS.

Precise detection of Plasmodium infections in community surveys is essential for effective malaria control. Microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are the major techniques used to identify malaria infections in the field-based surveys. Although microscopy is still considered as the gold standard, RDTs are increasingly becoming versatile due to their rapid and adequate performance characteristics.
A malaria prevalence cross-sectional survey was carried out in north-western Tanzania in 2016, aimed at appraising the performance of high sensitivity Plasmodium falciparum (HSPf) tests compared to SD Bioline Pf and microscopy in detecting P. falciparum infections. A total of 397 individuals aged five years and above were tested for P. falciparum infections. The sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) of microscopy, Pf RDT and HSPf RDT was determined using PCR as the gold standard method.

This study aims to produce curcumin nanoemulsion with different surface charge (curcumin (+) nanoemulsion and curcumin (-) nanoemulsion) and to evaluate its physical characteristics, in vitro cell cytotoxicity and antiviral activity against dengue virus (DENV) 1 and 2.
Two forms of nanoemulsion were prepared which were differed from their surface charge through spontaneous procedure resulting similar characteristics except the zeta potential value. Cytotoxicity was determined using RT-PCR method in A549 cell line and anti-DENV properties were determined by calculation of inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) value.
The positively charge of curcumin-loaded nanoemulsion showed better effect in reducing the viral replication represented by lower IC50 value. In addition, DENV-1 was more sensitive and responsive to curcumin as compared to DENV-2.

Antivenom is a gold-standard treatment for snakebite envenoming. However, adverse reactions to snake antivenom are common in many parts.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the allergic reactions following intravenous administration of antivenom sera.
This was retrospective study, conducted snakebites patients referred to the Rahimi Hospital in Khorramabad. The files of these patients were accessed for demographic data, snakebite-related data, treatment provided, clinical presentation and allergic reaction status as a result of antivenom treatment.
141 cases were investigated including 73.8% male and 26.2% female patients. The mean age of the patients was 38.1±17.1years. Age group 30-39 years accounted for highest number of snakebite cases (24.1%). A majority of victims (89.4%) were from the rural areas. Most of the patients (51.8%) were bitten in the spring and highest number of snakebite were reported in May (39.1%). The most common site of snakebite was lower extremities (50.4%) and upper extremities (44.7%). Among clinical feature of snakebite, pain was the most prevalent in 135 cases (95.7%) followed by swelling (83.7%). The mean antivenom vials used were 6.5±3.7 vials. Allergic reactions occurred in 6 patients (4.26%); reactions were mild in 5 patients and sever in 1patient. The commonest presentation was maculopapular rash (1.4%) and the least common were headache (0.71%), nausea (0.71%), fever (0.71) and hypotension (0.71%).

The anti-proliferative and ATPase inhibitory activities of these compounds were evaluated by MTT and ATPase inhibition assays, respectively. The western blot analysis was performed to the evaluation of the expression level of Hsp70 and Her2 proteins. Finally, 200 ns molecular dynamic simulation was carried out to confirm stability the strongest synthesized compound in Hsp90 active site.
