  • Scabies is an infestation of the skin caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. In 2017, scabies was recognised by the World Health Organisation as a disease of public importance and was consequently added to the list of neglected tropical diseases. An estimated 200 million people currently have scabies worldwide. Scabies is endemic in many developing countries, with the highest prevalence being in hot, humid climates such as the Pacific and Latin American regions. Scabies causes a host immune response which is intensely itchy. Scratching of the lesions can lead to secondary bacterial infections of the skin, such as impetigo, most commonly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus. This can have fatal consequences, such as septicaemia, glomerulonephritis, and rheumatic heart disease. Advances over the past 5 years indicate that mass drug administration is an effective strategy to treat scabies. This review will outline advances in the mite biology, epidemiological understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of scabies.Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a group of rare, inherited, neurological diseases characterized by broad clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Lower-limb spasticity with first motoneuron involvement is the core symptom of all HSPs. As spasticity is a syndrome and not a disease, it develops on top of other neurological signs (ataxia, dystonia, and parkinsonism). Indeed, the definition of genes responsible for HSPs goes beyond the 79 identified SPG genes. In order to avoid making a catalog of the different genes involved in HSP in any way, we have chosen to focus on the HSP with cerebellar ataxias since this is a frequent association described for several genes. This overlap leads to an intermediary group of spastic ataxias which is actively genetically and clinically studied. The most striking example is SPG7, which is responsible for HSP or cerebellar ataxia or both. There are no specific therapies against HSPs, and there is a dearth of randomized trials in patients with HSP, especially on spasticity when it likely results from other mechanisms. Thus far, no gene-specific therapy has been developed for HSP, but emerging therapies in animal models and neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells are potential treatments for patients.Background Latinx people in the United States are disproportionately diagnosed with HIV and are more likely to experience worse HIV-related health outcomes. Although m-health has demonstrated success in improving HIV care, a gap remains in the development of m-health platforms tailored to Latinx populations. Methods We conducted formative study to guide the adaptation of an evidence-based m-health intervention, PositiveLinks (PL), for Spanish-speaking Latinx people living with HIV (PLWH). Spanish-speaking Latinx PLWH in the nonurban Southern United States completed semistructured interviews and viewed a demo version of the m-health intervention. Qualitative analysis was performed using a grounded theory approach. Emerging themes were identified in four topic areas (1) prior experiences with technology, (2) desired m-health features, (3) experiences with prototype app, and (4) iteration of prototype. Results All PLWH who participated (n = 22) were born outside the continental United States. Participants included 10 men, 10 women, and 2 transgender participants. Mean age was 41.1 years (standard deviation 11.6 years). Participants expressed concerns about privacy, a need for reliable information, and interest in practical m-health features such as appointment and medication reminders. After trialing the Spanish-language PL prototype, participants reported that peer support and positive reinforcement were strong motivators to use the app. The ability to individualize the app to meet one's own needs was also considered important. Conclusion This formative study provides baseline attitudes about m-health among Latinx PLWH as well as desired m-health features. m-Health interventions are acceptable to Spanish-speaking PLWH and involving the target population in a user-centered formative process led to improvements in app accessibility and usability.Platelets possess distinct surface moieties responsible for modulating their adhesion to various disease-relevant substrates involving vascular damage, immune evasion, and pathogen interactions. Such broad biointerfacing capabilities of platelets have inspired the development of platelet-mimicking drug carriers that preferentially target drug payloads to disease sites for enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Among these carriers, platelet membrane-coated nanoparticles (denoted 'PNPs') made by cloaking synthetic substrates with the plasma membrane of platelets have emerged recently. Their 'top-down' design combines the functionalities of natural platelet membrane and the engineering flexibility of synthetic nanomaterials, which together create synergy for effective drug delivery and novel therapeutics. Herein, we review the recent progress of engineering PNPs with different structures for targeted drug delivery, focusing on three areas, including targeting injured blood vessels to treat vascular diseases, targeting cancer cells for cancer treatment and detection, and targeting drug-resistant bacteria to treat infectious diseases. Overall, current studies have established PNPs as versatile nanotherapeutics for drug targeting with strong potentials to improve the treatment of various diseases.

    We developed a program called the Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System (HEROES) that provides rapid access to board-certified emergency physicians for initiation of buprenorphine, plus at least 1 behavioral counseling session and 4 weekly peer support sessions over the course of 30 days. Follow-ups were conducted by phone and in person to obtain patient-reported outcomes. Primary outcomes included percentage of patients who completed the 30-day program and the percentage for successful linkage to more permanent ongoing treatment after the initial program.

  • Autophagy, a main degradation pathway for maintaining cellular homeostasis, and redox homeostasis have recently been considered to play protective roles in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in neurons can induce mitochondrial damage and protein aggregation, thereby resulting in neurodegeneration. Oxidative stress is one of the major activation signals for the induction of autophagy. Upon activation, autophagy can remove ROS, damaged mitochondria, and aggregated proteins from the cells. Thus, autophagy can be an effective strategy to maintain redox homeostasis in the brain. However, the interaction between redox homeostasis and autophagy is not clearly elucidated. In this review, we discuss recent studies on the relationship between redox homeostasis and autophagy associated with neurodegenerative diseases and propose that autophagy induction through pharmacological intervention or genetic activation might be a promising strategy to treat these disorders.This study shows mechanochemical synthesis as an alternative method to the traditional green synthesis of silver nanoparticles in a comparative manner by comparing the products obtained using both methodologies and different characterization methods. As a silver precursor, the most commonly used silver nitrate was applied and the easily accessible lavender (Lavandula angustofolia L.) plant was used as a reducing agent. Both syntheses were performed using 7 different lavenderAgNO3 mass ratios. The synthesis time was limited to 8 and 15 min in the case of green and mechanochemical synthesis, respectively, although a significant amount of unreacted silver nitrate was detected in both crude reaction mixtures at low lavenderAgNO3 ratios. This finding is of particular interest mainly for green synthesis, as the potential presence of silver nitrate in the produced nanosuspension is often overlooked. Unreacted AgNO3 has been removed from the mechanochemically synthesized samples by washing. The nanocrystalline character of the products has been confirmed by both X-ray diffraction (Rietveld refinement) and transmission electron microscopy. The latter has shown bimodal size distribution with larger particles in tens of nanometers and the smaller ones below 10 nm in size. In the case of green synthesis, the used lavenderAgNO3 ratio was found to have a decisive role on the crystallite size. Silver chloride has been detected as a side-product, mainly at high lavenderAgNO3 ratios. Both products have shown a strong antibacterial activity, being higher in the case of green synthesis, but this can be ascribed to the presence of unreacted AgNO3. Thus, one-step mechanochemical synthesis (without the need to prepare extract and performing the synthesis as separate steps) can be applied as a sustainable alternative to the traditional green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles using plants.Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally been discussed as a disease where serious cognitive decline is a result of Aβ-plaque accumulation, tau tangle formation, and neurodegeneration. Recently, it has been shown that metabolic dysregulation observed with insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes actively contributes to the progression of AD. One of the pathologies linking metabolic disease to AD is the release of inflammatory cytokines that contribute to the development of brain neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, ultimately resulting in amyloid-beta peptide production and accumulation. Improving these metabolic impairments has been shown to be effective at reducing AD progression and improving cognitive function. The polyphenol resveratrol (RSV) improves peripheral metabolic disorders and may provide similar benefits centrally in the brain. RSV reduces inflammatory cytokine release, improves mitochondrial energetic function, and improves Aβ-peptide clearance by activating SIRT1 and AMPK. RSV has also been linked to improved cognitive function; however, the mechanisms of action are less defined. However, there is evidence to suggest that chronic RSV-driven AMPK activation may be detrimental to synaptic function and growth, which would directly impact cognition. This study describes epidemiological and clinical characteristics of EV infections involved in HFMD and other mucocutaneous symptoms from 2006 to 2020 in Spain. EV-positive samples from 368 patients were included. EV species A were identified in 85.1% of those typed EV. Coxsackievirus (CV) A6 was the prevalent serotype (60.9%), followed by EV-A71 (9.9%) and CVA16 (7.7%). Infections affected children (1-6 years old) mainly, and show seasonality with peaks in spring-summer and autumn. Clinical data indicated few cases of atypical HFMD as well as those with neurological complications (associated with the 2016 EV-A71 outbreak). Phylogenetic analysis of CVA6 VP1 sequences showed different sub-clusters circulating from 2010 to present. In conclusion, HFMD or exanthemas case reporting has increased in Spain in recent years, probably associated with an increase in circulation of CVA6, although they did not seem to show greater severity.   • Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have excellent intrinsic properties, such as long carrier lifetime, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and high gain, in whispering gallery mode (WGM) cavities by facile vapor self-assembly or solution process, which make them competitive for high-performance microlasers. However, the performance of perovskite-based microlasers is severely limited by the fabrication of microcavities, which results in poor reproducibility and uncontrolled morphology. Herein, we explore a reproducible method which combined thermal co-evaporation with femtosecond (fs) laser direct writing for formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite polygon-shaped WGM microcavities. The microlasers pumped with the fs laser had a low threshold of 4.0-12.3 μJ/cm2 and narrow full width at half-maximum of 0.62-1.05 nm. Moreover, size- and shape-dependent WGM lasing performances are also investigated systematically. The results prove that FAPbI3 polygonal microcavities can serve as promising WGM lasers and have great potential for practical optoelectronic applications.Electronic devices with high heat flux are currently facing heat dissipation problems. Heat pipes can be used as efficient heat spreaders to address this critical problem. However, as electronic devices become smaller, the space for heat dissipation is becoming ever so limited; hence, ultrathin heat pipes are desired. This study proposes a biomimetic copper forest wick for an ultrathin heat pipe (UTHP). It is made by a simple one-step electrodeposition process and appears as a natural forest structure with abundant Ω-like grooves. Capillary rise tests with ethanol were performed to characterize the capillary force of the wick structure. Compared to traditional sintered particles, this wick structure has a **** higher capillary performance parameter, K/Reff. The biomimetic copper forest wick was used to fabricate a 0.6 mm thick UTHP. The UTHP was tested at different filling ratios; the optimum filling ratio was found to be about 71%. At a heating power of 6 W, the temperature difference between the condenser and evaporator was only 1.2 °C, with an effective thermal conductivity, λeff, up to 1.26 × 104 W m-1 K-1.Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by core symptoms such as impaired social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, and restricted interests. Seventeen new compounds were synthesized and tested in radioligand binding assay at the target receptors.     Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have excellent intrinsic properties, such as long carrier lifetime, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and high gain, in whispering gallery mode (WGM) cavities by facile vapor self-assembly or solution process, which make them competitive for high-performance microlasers. However, the performance of perovskite-based microlasers is severely limited by the fabrication of microcavities, which results in poor reproducibility and uncontrolled morphology. Herein, we explore a reproducible method which combined thermal co-evaporation with femtosecond (fs) laser direct writing for formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite polygon-shaped WGM microcavities. The microlasers pumped with the fs laser had a low threshold of 4.0-12.3 μJ/cm2 and narrow full width at half-maximum of 0.62-1.05 nm. Moreover, size- and shape-dependent WGM lasing performances are also investigated systematically. This study proposes a biomimetic copper forest wick for an ultrathin heat pipe (UTHP). It is made by a simple one-step electrodeposition process and appears as a natural forest structure with abundant Ω-like grooves. Capillary rise tests with ethanol were performed to characterize the capillary force of the wick structure. Compared to traditional sintered particles, this wick structure has a much higher capillary performance parameter, K/Reff. The biomimetic copper forest wick was used to fabricate a 0.6 mm thick UTHP. The UTHP was tested at different filling ratios; the optimum filling ratio was found to be about 71%. Although these spontaneous dural cavernous fistulas are self-limited, a sizeable number of patients will develop progressive vision loss, diplopia, or intractable glaucoma, which warrant interventional therapy.1,2 We present the case of a 54-year-old male with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, who presented with a red right eye associated with progressive exophthalmos, ophthalmoparesis, and deterioration of visual acuity. The angiotomography showed the exophthalmos with an ingurgitated superior ophthalmic vein, with early filling in the arterial phase. A digital angiography was made, and a diagnosis of dural cavernous fistula, Barrow type D was made.3 Considering several transvenous approaches, alternatives included inferior petrosal sinus, access through the superior ophthalmic vein, and an open approach.4 In this particular case the inferior petrosal sinus was not present, so we tried to catheterize through the facial vein and also puncture the ophthalmic vein. Both procedures were unsuccessful. We decided to perform, then, an open approach with the oculoplastic surgery team (Video 1). Through an eyelid dissection, we localized the superior ophthalmic vein and then canalized it by direct visualization.5 With this approach, we were able to perform the cavernous sinus packing with coils and achieved a complete occlusion of the fistula. However, the emergence of drug resistance remained a major obstacle towards global tuberculosis (TB) control program 2030, especially in high burden countries including Pakistan. To overcome the resistance and design potent drugs, genomic variations in drugs targets as well as in the virulence and evolutionary factors might be useful for better understanding and designing potential inhibitors. Here we aimed to find genomic variations in the first-line drugs targets, along with other virulence and evolutionary factors among the circulating isolates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Samples were collected and drug susceptibility testing (DST) was performed as per WHO standard. The resistance samples were subjected to WGS. Among the five whole genome sequences, three samples (NCBI BioProject Accession PRJNA629298, PRJNA629388) harbored 1997, 1162, and 2053 mutations. Some novel mutations have been detected in drugs targets. Similarly, numerous novel variants have also been detected in virulency and evolutionary factors, PE, PPE, and secretory system of MTB isolates. Exploring the genomic variations among the circulating isolates in geographical specific locations might be useful for future drug designing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that provides useful data regarding the insight genomic variations in virulency, evolutionary factors including ESX and PE/PPE as well as drug targets, for better understanding and management of TB in a WHO declared high burden country.
    Patients with a new diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who are prescribed stimulant medication need regular follow-up. Guidelines recommend follow-up within 30 days of stimulant initiation or change but this goal is seldom achieved. This quality improvement (QI) study in an urban academic outpatient practice aimed to 1) assess whether use of school-based telemedicine increases rates of follow-up within 30 days and decreases the number of days to follow-up for ADHD, and 2) compare rates of 30-day follow-up via in-person vs telemedicine visits.

    We performed three Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles over a 12-month period QI interventions included clinic wide education, paper prompts for clinicians, and creation of a database to track ADHD patients. We measured days from the index visit to the follow-up visit, and the mode of both visits (in-person or telemedicine). Data were collected for 6 months pre-intervention and 12 months post-intervention.

From an interdisciplinary perspective, this paper aims to review past studies focused on electroencephalography (EEG)-based affective computing (AC) in marketing, which provides a promising avenue for studying the mechanisms underlying affective states and developing recognition computational models to predict the psychological responses of customers. This review offers an introduction to EEG technology and an overview of EEG-based AC; provides a snapshot of the current state of the literature. In this study, we interviewed Twitch viewers about the streamers they view, how and to what extent they discuss mental health on their channels in relation to gaming, how other viewers reac discussions about mental health on Twitch led to some viewers being more cautious when talking about mental health to show understanding.The COVID-19 emergency has hit the whole world, finding all countries unprepared to face it. The first studies focused on the medical aspects, neglecting the psychological dimension of the populations that were forced to face changes in everyday life and in some cases to stay forcedly at home in order to reduce contagion. The present research was carried out in Italy, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The aim was to analyze the perception of happiness, mental health, and the sense of loneliness experienced by adults during the lockdown due to the COVID pandemic. Specifically, the variables will be examined in relation to gender difference, living alone, with partner, or with partner and children. The research followed a quantitative approach using an online questionnaire. The project involved 1100 subjects from whom 721 participants (75.5% women) were extrapolated. Of them, 17.3% claimed to live alone, 39.5% with their partner, and 43.1% with their partner and children. The results show that people in general experienced a lower level of happiness and mental health and higher levels of loneliness compared to normative sample. The lockdown and pandemic condition due to COVID-19 seems to have canceled the gender differences in the perception of happiness and mental health, while it seems to have increased the perception of loneliness experienced by males compared to the pre-pandemic condition. In addition, those who lived alone perceived a greater level of loneliness than those who lived with their partner or partner and children. Unexpectedly, no significant differences emerged regarding the level of happiness and mental health between those who had direct contact with the virus and those who did not. These data should make political decision-makers reflect on the need to pay more attention to the implications that such drastic measures as a lockdown can have on people's psychological well-being.The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented health crisis. In the present study, we drew samples from the United States (N = 597), Italy (N = 606), and South Korea (N = 693) and examined predictors of compliance with social distancing and intentions to report the infection to both authorities and acquaintances. Data were collected between April 6th and 8th 2020. We investigated the role of cultural orientations of horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism, self-conscious emotions of shame and guilt related to the infection and trust in the government's action. Across all countries, vertical collectivism (VC) predicted stronger shame, whereas horizontal collectivism predicted stronger trust in the government. Only in the United States, VC was associated with stronger trust. Stronger feelings of shame predicted lower compliance and intentions to report the infection to both authorities and acquaintances.

However, the relationships between all these identities and PEBs have so far not been tested quantitatively with meta-analytical techniques. As such, a clear overview of this field is currently lacking. Due to the diverse nature of the field, a priori hypotheses were not possible and relatively broad definitions of identity had to be used to encompass all types of identities and the diverse meanings of identit self-reported rather than observed PEBs (Aim 4). In this study, we interviewed Twitch viewers about the streamers they view, how and to what extent they discuss mental health on their channels in relation to gaming, how other viewers reac discussions about mental health on Twitch led to some viewers being more cautious when talking about mental health to show understanding.The COVID-19 emergency has hit the whole world, finding all countries unprepared to face it. The first studies focused on the medical aspects, neglecting the psychological dimension of the populations that were forced to face changes in everyday life and in some cases to stay forcedly at home in order to reduce contagion. The present research was carried out in Italy, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The aim was to analyze the perception of happiness, mental health, and the sense of loneliness experienced by adults during the lockdown due to the COVID pandemic. Specifically, the variables will be examined in relation to gender difference, living alone, with partner, or with partner and children. The research followed a quantitative approach using an online questionnaire. The project involved 1100 subjects from whom 721 participants (75.5% women) were extrapolated. Of them, 17.3% claimed to live alone, 39.5% with their partner, and 43.1% with their partner and children. The results show that people in general experienced a lower level of happiness and mental health and higher levels of loneliness compared to normative sample. The lockdown and pandemic condition due to COVID-19 seems to have canceled the gender differences in the perception of happiness and mental health, while it seems to have increased the perception of loneliness experienced by males compared to the pre-pandemic condition. In addition, those who lived alone perceived a greater level of loneliness than those who lived with their partner or partner and children. Unexpectedly, no significant differences emerged regarding the level of happiness and mental health between those who had direct contact with the virus and those who did not. These data should make political decision-makers reflect on the need to pay more attention to the implications that such drastic measures as a lockdown can have on people's psychological well-being.The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented health crisis. Many governments around the world have responded by implementing lockdown measures of various degrees of intensity. To be effective, these measures must rely on citizens' cooperation. In the present study, we drew samples from the United States (N = 597), Italy (N = 606), and South Korea (N = 693) and examined predictors of compliance with social distancing and intentions to report the infection to both authorities and acquaintances. Data were collected between April 6th and 8th 2020. We investigated the role of cultural orientations of horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism, self-conscious emotions of shame and guilt related to the infection and trust in the government's action. Across all countries, vertical collectivism (VC) predicted stronger shame, whereas horizontal collectivism predicted stronger trust in the government. Only in the United States, VC was associated with stronger trust. Stronger feelings of shame predicted lower compliance and intentions to report the infection to both authorities and acquaintances.

LPIN1 is an enzyme that displays phosphatidate phosphatase activity in the triglyceride and phospholipid synthesis pathway. Recent studies have shown that overexpression of LPIN1 is involved in breast tumorigenesis, but the underlying mechanism regulating LPIN1 expression has not been elucidated yet. In the present study, we showed that the IL-33-induced COT-JNK1/2 signaling pathway regulates LPIN1 mRNA and protein expression by recruiting c-Jun to the LPIN1 promoter in breast cancer cells. IL-33 dose-dependently and time-dependently increased LPIN1 mRNA and protein expression. Results During the study period, the overall incidence rate for injury suggested a 1.04 times more often injury occurrence (IRR = 1.04, 95% CI 0.08; 2.00) among Polish players compared with French players; however, the distribution of injuries varied by country.

  • This study reports the in vitro anticoagulation activity of acetonic extract (AE) of 42 lichen species and the identification of potential bioavailable anticoagulant compounds from Umbilicaria decussata as a competent anticoagulant lichen species. Lichens' AEs were evaluated for their anticoagulant activity by monitoring activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) assays. A strong, positive correlation was observed between total phenolics concentration (TPC) of species and blood coagulation parameters. U. decussata was the only species with the longest clotting time in both APTT and PT assays. The research was moved forward by performing in vivo assays using rats. The results corroborated the dose-dependent impact of U. decussata's AE on rats' clotting time. Major secondary metabolites of U. decussata and their plasma-related bioavailability were also investigated using LC-ESI-MS/MS. One hundred and sixty-six adolescents (Mage = 16.26; SD = 1.53) belonging to the societal majority group answered a battery of self-report measures. Bullying migrant peers was associated with more negative quality of the contact. Bullying migrants was also associated with lower perceived acceptance of cultural diversity at school for the adolescents reporting higher levels of contact with migrants at school. The role of contact in explaining bullying toward migrant peers is also discussed in light of possible interventions.

However, the current knowledge is still incomplete for unique herbal matrices belonging to minor crops. The research in this article presents, for the first time, the dissipation kinetics and processing behavior of carboxamide boscalid (BOS) and stobilurin pyraclostrobin (PYR) fungicides during glasshouse dill (Anethum graveolens L.) cultivation.

    ) of BOS and PYR after application at the recommended and double dosage were in the range 1.62-2.01 days in plant and 2.08-4.85 days in soil, respectively. The processing behavior in dill was estimated after washing, hot air drying and drying in sunlight without/with pretreatment. Because of limitations related to the volatility and oxidization of EβF and MeSA under natural conditions, slow-release and antioxidant techniques should be developed and optimized before application. Here, a slow-release alginate bead of EβF mixed with MeSA was first designed and manufactured. We hypothesized that a mixture of these two semiochemicals could be effective in controlling Sitobion miscanthi in wheat crops. Both MeSA and EβF in alginate beads were released stably and continuously for at least 15 days in the laboratory, whereas EβF in paraffin oil and pure MeSA were released for only 2 and 7 days, respectively. In 2018 field experiments, EβF and MeSA alone or in association significantly decreased the abundance of alate and apterous aphids. An increased abundance of mummified aphids enhanced by higher parasitism rates was observed when using EβF and MeSA in association, with a significant reduction of apterous abundance, more so than EβF or MeSA alone. In 2019, plots treated with a mixture of EβF and MeSA showed significantly decreased abundance of alate and apterous aphids with higher parasitism rates compared with the control. In current work role of transcriptional activator of formate regulon FhlA in generation of fermentation end products and proton motive force, N'N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD)-sensitive ATPase activity at 20 and 72 hr growth during utilization of mixture of glucose, glycerol, and formate were investigated. It was shown that in fhlA mutant specific growth rate was ~1.5 fold lower compared to wt, while addition of DCCD abolished the growth in fhlA but not in wt. Formate was not utilized in fhlA mutant but wt cells simultaneously utilized formate with glucose. Glycerol utilization started earlier (from 2 hr) in fhlA than in wt. The DCCD-sensitive ATPase activity in wt cells membrane vesicles increased ~2 fold at 72 hr and was decreased 70% in fhlA. Addition of formate in the assays increased proton ATPase activity in wt and mutant strain. FhlA absence mainly affected the ΔpH but not ΔΨ component of Δp in the cells grown at 72 hr but not in 24 hr. The Δp in wt cells decreased from 24 to 72 hr of growth ~40 mV while in fhlA mutant it was stable. Taken together, it is suggested that FhlA regulates the concentration of fermentation end products and via influencing FO F1 -ATPase activity contributes to the proton motive force generation.

It was shown that in fhlA mutant specific growth rate was ~1.5 fold lower compared to wt, while addition of DCCD abolished the growth in fhlA but not in wt. Formate was not utilized in fhlA mutant but wt cells simultaneously utilized formate with glucose. Glycerol utilization started earlier (from 2 hr) in fhlA than in wt. The DCCD-sensitive ATPase activity in wt cells membrane vesicles increased ~2 fold at 72 hr and was decreased 70% in fhlA. Addition of formate in the assays increased proton ATPase activity in wt and mutant strain. FhlA absence mainly affected the ΔpH but not ΔΨ component of Δp in the cells grown at 72 hr but not in 24 hr. The Δp in wt cells decreased from 24 to 72 hr of growth ~40 mV while in fhlA mutant it was stable. Taken together, it is suggested that FhlA regulates the concentration of fermentation end products and via influencing FO F1 -ATPase activity contributes to the proton motive force generation.

  • Background Dorsal preservation rhinoplasty (DPR) has recently received significant academic attention in part due to theoretical benefits over excisional surgical methods. The purpose of this study was to assess the global practice patterns regarding this technique.     Advances in genomic techniques have led to increased use of next-generation sequencing (NGS). We evaluated the extent to which these tests guide treatment decisions.

    We developed and distributed a survey assessing NGS use and outcomes to a survey pool of ASCO members. Comparisons between groups were performed with Wilcoxon two-sample, chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests.

    Among 178 respondents, 62% were male, 54% White, and 67% affiliated with academic centers. More than half (56%) indicated that NGS provided actionable information to a moderate or great extent. Use was highest (median ≥ 70% of cases) for lung and gastric cancer, and lowest (median < 25% of cases) in head and neck and genitourinary cancers. Approximately one third of respondents reported that, despite identification of an actionable molecular variant, patients were sometimes or often unable to access the relevant US Food and Drug Administration-approved therapy. When NGS did not provide actionable results, individuals reporting greated therapies or referring to a clinical trial.

Results Primary results of the study were a set of common themes emerging from 735 units for analysis, arranged into 34 basic themes, nine organizing themes, and four global themes. The resulting networks centered around quality of life impact, coping, health literacy, and access. Direct quotes from the participants are utilized to illustrate response categories. Conclusions Individuals with HNC and their caregivers living in rural communities in the United States appear to represent a unique subset of the HNC population.

  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is commonly used diagnostic method with no widely accepted quality measure. We assessed quality indicator-composite detection rate (CDR)-consisting of detection of at least one of the following cervical inlet patch, gastric polyp and post-ulcer duodenal bulb deformation. The aim of the study was to validate CDR according to detection rate of upper gastrointestinal neoplasms (UGN).

    It was a multicenter, prospective, observational study conducted from January 2019 to October 2019. The endoscopic reports from 2896 symptomatic patients who underwent diagnostic EGD were analyzed. The EGDs were performed in three endoscopy units located in tertiary university hospital, private outpatient clinic and local hospital.

    64 UGNs were detected. The mean CDR was 21.9%. The CDR correlated with UGN detection rate (R = 0.49, p = 0.045). Based on CDR quartiles, operators were divided into group 1 with CDR < 10%, group 2 with CDR 10-17%, group 3 with CDR 17.1-26%, and group 4 with CDR > 26%. Detection rate of UGN was significantly higher in the group 4 in comparison to group 1 (OR 4.4; 95% CI 2.2 - 9.0). In the multivariate regression model, patient age, male gender and operator's CDR > 26% were independent risk factors of UGN detection (OR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01 - 1.05, OR 2; 95% CI 1.2 - 3.5, and OR 5.7 95% CI 1.5 - 22.3, respectively).

Although multiple vaccines have recently been approved for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an effective treatment is still lacking. Our knowledge of the pathogenicity of this virus is still incomplete. Studies have revealed that viral factors such as the viral load, duration of exposure to the virus, and viral mutations are important variables in COVID-19 outcome. Furthermore, host factors, including age, health condition, co-morbidities, and genetic background, might also be involved in clinical manifestations and infection outcome. This review focuses on the importance of variations in the host genetic background and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2. We will discuss the significance of polymorphisms in the ACE-2, TMPRSS2, vitamin D receptor, vitamin D binding protein, CD147, glucose-regulated protein 78 kDa, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4), neuropilin-1, heme oxygenase, apolipoprotein L1, vitamin K epoxide reductase complex 1 (VKORC1), and immune system genes for the clinical outcome of COVID-19.Since its first recognition in the early 1960s, Derzsy's disease has caused significant economic losses in the goose meat industry through the world. A 4709-base nucleotide sequence including the structural, non-structural, and 5' inverted terminal repeat regions was obtained from three samples from the Central Anatolian region. Multiple sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the field strains clustered with European group 2 and contained a series of unique amino acid substitutions that might affect the virulence of the virus. These results confirmed that European-related field strains caused the outbreak in Asia Minor, and this might assist in understanding the circulation of GPV in Asia and Europe.

The combination of the two types is of particular importance, as it can provide effective antimicrobial polymeric materials with self-polishing capabilities as a result of the released nature of the antimicrobial, in combination with the permanent local action of the immobilized species. The cross-linking reaction of the terpolymer P(SSAmC16w-co-VBCHAMx-co-GMAy) with the homopolymer polyacrylic acid (PAA) was tested at 120 °C in terms of the equivalent ratio between epoxy and carboxyl groups. The synthesized polymers were further used for the coating of aquaculture nets and tested in terms of antifouling efficiency in lab and scale-up conditions. Uncoated nets were also used in all applications for comparison reasons. The coated nets performed efficiently for 35 days in lab-scale and 66 days in scale-up conditions, showing a high antifouling activity in both fields compared to the uncoated nets.The operational performance of cantilever composite structures can benefit from both stiffness tailoring and geometric design, yet, this potential has not been fully utilized in existing studies. The present study addresses this problem by simultaneously optimizing layer and taper angles of cantilever laminates. The design objective is selected as minimizing the average deflection of the tip edge subjected to shear loads while keeping the length and total volume constant. The plate stiffness properties are described by lamination parameters to eliminate the possible solution dependency on the initial assumptions regarding laminate configuration. The responses are computed via finite element analyses, while optimal design variables are determined using genetic algorithms. The results demonstrate that the plate aspect ratio significantly influences the effectiveness of stiffness tailoring and tapering as well as the optimal layer and taper angles. In addition, concurrent exploitation of the lamination characteristics and plate geometry is shown to be essential for achieving maximum performance. Moreover, individual and simultaneous optimization of layer and taper angles produce different optimal results, indicating the possible drawback of using sequential approaches in similar composite design problems.Health and longevity in humans are influenced by numerous factors, including lifestyle and nutrition. However, the direct relationship between lifetime eating habits and functional capacity of the elderly is poorly understood. This study investigated the dietary changes across nutrition transition (NT) in the early 1960s, in a population located in the Sardinia island known for its longevity, dubbed as "Longevity Blue Zone" (LBZ), as well as the relationship between the dietary patterns and a panel of health indicators. A total of 150 oldest-old participants (89 women and 61 men, age range 90-101 years) living in the LBZ were recruited. Participants were interviewed using validated questionnaires to assess the consumption frequency of common food items, as well as the correlation with self-rated health, comorbidity, affective and cognitive level, physical mobility, disability and anthropometric parameters. Differences between subgroups were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired samples. Correlation analysis was performed by calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient, separately in males and females.   • In the United States, medical volunteers are generally protected by the Aviation Medical Assistance Act of 1998. There is no equivalent law governing international travel, and legal jurisdiction depends on the patient's and medical professional's countries of citizenship and the country in which the aircraft is registered.The article presents comparisons of planned and normative and actual data on medical care in otorhinolaryngology, analysis of the normative number of otorhinolaryngologists according to the current orders of the Ministry of Health of Russia. It is concluded that it is necessary to amend modern regulatory documents.The procedures for the provision of medical care in otorhinolaryngology and audiology-otorhinolaryngology contain a large number of requirements. The actualization of the orders has not been carried out for a long time, which is due to the lack of methodological formalized approaches for the formation of hypotheses regarding expedient changes. The article proposes an analysis of the results of state control, which will allow the formation of specific proposals for assessment by experts in the framework of the process of updating the procedures for the provision of medical care.

Endemic in the spread of scleroma is considered There are tropical and temperate zones such as Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, South America and Central America. Features of development scleroma in the present case and the complexity of the diagnosis caused by atypical, the rapid development of the disease, the greater prevalence of the process (including the orbit), with the transition to the soft tissues of the cheek bone and upper jaw, which is not typical for scleroma. The process was primarily localized in the left maxillary sinus and mimicked sinusitis. The presence of radicular cysts and darkening of the left maxillary sinus on radiographs, taking into account the clinical picture of the disease, were interpreted incorrectly, which led to the establishment of an incorrect diagnosis and subsequent surgical interventions. More targeted and consistent examination of histo-the logical material obtained after three surgical interventions made it possible to identify the characteristic signs scleroma, establish the correct diagnosis and prescribe effective treatment. In our case, we applied Ciprofloxacin course for 3 months at a maximum daily dose of 2000 mg in combination with probiotics. During treatment, it was noted a significant improvement in the patient's well-being, facial pains became less intense, a decrease in the volume of ma tissues of the left cheek and improved nasal breathing.According to literature, the average age of children with unilateral atresia of the choan is six years nine months. Unilateral complete atresia of the choan makes it difficult to diagnose early the initial diagnosis can be established in the second year of life and later, already at school age. On the example of oligosymptomatic localized gonococcal pharyngitis in a sexually active young man, included in the risk group for extragenital forms of sexually transmitted infections, an advantage has been shown molecular biological diagnostic method. Study of the spectrum of microflora of the oropharynx and urethra with assessment sensitivity to antibacterial drugs of representatives of the genus Neisseria isolated during mixed infection oropharynx, demonstrated that non-pathogenic Neisseria species are resistant to cephalosporins III-IV generations. Unrecognized forms of oropharyngeal gonococcal infection, as a consequence of the complications of clinical and diagnostic identification when patients refer to an otolaryngologist or dermatovenerologist, can serve a reservoir of resistant N. gonorrhoeae and a source of intractable gonococcal infection.A rare observation of ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of the larynx in a 23-year-old young man is presented. Surgical intervention, performed in two stages, provided a positive result. With dynamic observation of this patient for three years, continued growth and tumor recurrence were not observed. Due to the fact that ossifying fibromyxoid tumor is rare, differs in the complexity of differential diagnosis and an uncertain prognosis of the course of the disease, registration and dispensary observation of patients with this pathology is necessary.The goal of this paper is to review the pharmacological profile of betahistine and evidence for using it in the treatment of common vestibular disorders.
