    Lamellar macular holes (LMHs) are an entity of a progressive disease in which the efficacy of the therapy of choice, vitrectomy, seems to be reduced. It is unknown whether highly concentrated autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is of value in the therapy of LMHs. The purpose of this study was to gauge the potential of highly concentrated PRP to restore foveal anatomy in LMH surgery.

    In this interventional case series, eight eyes of eight patients with progressive LMH were included. All patients underwent a 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy with induction of a posterior vitreous detachment and peeling of tractive epiretinal membranes whenever present. Under air tamponade, 0.1 mL of highly concentrated autologous PRP was applied. Subsequently, a gas or air tamponade was performed. All patients were instructed to rest in the supine position for the first 1 to 2 postoperative hours. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) testing, microperimetry, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fundus photography were performed prior to and 3 months after surgery.

    SD-OCT showed closure of the macular defect with restoration of a normal foveal configuration in all (8 of 8) patients 3 months postoperatively. BCVA improved significantly, from 0.28 ± 0.08 to 0.12 ± 0.14 logMAR (Wilcoxon p = 0.03). It was the aim of this study to investigate the therapeutic success of Xen45 gel stents as a stand-alone technique (Xen) and combined with cataract surgery (XenPhaco), and with antimetabolites (mitomycin C, MMC) in open-angle glaucoma patients.

    Retrospective analysis was performed of 199 eyes of 177 glaucoma patients of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Erlangen Nürnberg, and from the Erlangen Glaucoma Registry (NCT00494923; ISSN 2191-5008, CS-2011) who underwent implantation of a Xen45 gel stent. Therapeutic success was defined as IOP reduction of ≥ 20% on the same or less anti-glaucomatous medication after 12months compared to preoperative and without any additional glaucoma-related surgery (except bleb needling). IOP reduction, reduction in local anti-glaucomatous eye drops, and intra- and postoperative complications were monitored.

    This retrospective investigated the impact of donor age, recipient age, donor endothelial cell density, vis-à-tergo, and additional intraoperative lens exchange (triple-procedure) on overall early and late phase postoperative endothelial cell density (ECD) following penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in various diagnosis groups.

Targeted drug delivery is a system of specifying the drug moiety directly into its targeted body area (organ, cellular, and subcellular level of specific tissue) to overcome the aspecific toxic effect of conventional drug delivery, thereby reducing the amount of drug required for therapeutic efficacy. To achieve this objective, the magic bullet concept was developed and pushed scientists to investigate for more than a century, leading to the envisioning of different nanometer-sized devices - today's nanomedicine. Different carrier systems are being used and investigated, which include colloidal (vesicular and multiparticulate) carriers, polymers, and cellular/subcellular systems. This study, therefore, examined their roles as members of the interprofessional care team in managing patients with chronic diseases. A search in PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted for research articles that discussed pharmacists, interprofessional healthcare, and chronic diseases. From initial 420 identified articles, a total of 27 articles were included in this study. The interprofessional healthcare team should have a sense of tolerance and belonging among its members, which is reflected in five dimensions partnership, coordination, cooperation, decision-making, and therapeutic outcomes. The five dimensions are closely related because they support each other in the success of the therapy. The presence of pharmacists in an interprofessional healthcare team has been proven to help facilitate access to primary care and improve patient outcomes. Pharmacists can assist in managing chronic disease conditions by providing drug information to patients and other healthcare providers and by acting as a consultant for treatment-related issues. The pharmacist's role as part of an interprofessional care team reinforces the importance of a collaborative healthcare team in providing clinical services to patients with chronic diseases.
    Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced protein 3-interacting protein 2 (TNIP2) has been well demonstrated to act as a principal contributor to the development of inflammatory diseases; however, the role of TNIP2 in cerebral ischemic/reperfusion injury has never been studied.

    Gene expression was examined by using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. The functional role of TNIP2 in oxygen and glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced neuronal injury was evaluated using cell counting kit-8, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dutp nick end labeling assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Commercial kits were applied to evaluate the activity of NF-kappa-B (NF-κB) and caspase-3, as well as the release of lactate dehydrogenase release (LDH).

    TNIP2 expression was substantially declined in HT22 cells following OGD/R stimulation. TNIP2 overexpression attenuated ODG/R-induced inflammation in HT22 cells, as evidenced by reduced levels of TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and increased levels of IL-10. TNIP2 overexpression also reduced activity of NF-κB under ODG/R condition. Meanwhile, OGD/R treatment caused a reduction of cell viability and an elevation of cell apoptosis in HT22 cells, as indicated by the increase in LDH and caspase-3 activity. Whereas, OGD/R-induced HT22 cell injury was mitigated by TNIP2 overexpression in HT22 cells. Besides, we found the involvement of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/NF-κB pathway in the neuroprotective effect of TNIP2 on OGD/R-induced HT22 cell damage.

    Serological tests detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) are widely used in seroprevalence studies and evaluating the efficacy of the vaccination program. Some of the widely used serological testing techniques are enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA), chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA), and lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). However, these tests are plagued with low sensitivity or specificity, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive. We developed a serological test implementing flow-through dot-blot assay (FT-DBA) for SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG detection, which provides enhanced sensitivity and specificity while being quick to perform and easy to use.

    SARS-CoV-2 antigens were immobilized on nitrocellulose membrane to capture human IgG, which was then detected with anti-human IgG conjugated gold nanoparticle (hIgG-AuNP). A total of 181 samples were analyzed in-house. Within which 35 were further evaluated in US FDA-approved CLIA Elecsys SARS-CoV-2 assay. The positive panel consisted of RT-qPCR positive samples from patients with both <14 days and >14 days from the onset of clinical symptoms.

Results Eight and five studies were included in the toxicity and efficacy analysis, respectively, including a total of 1081 RCC patients. Later, lobeline underwent clinical trials for several indications including the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a multicenter phase three trial for smoking cessation. Subsequently, several other alkaloids derived from different species of Lobelia were also investigated for their pharmacological characteristics. However, in the last few years, the research focus has started shifting to the characterization of the other novel chemical classes. The major shift has been noticed due to the structurally similar alkaloid components, which essentially share similar pharmacological, physicochemical, and toxicological profiles. In vitro data demonstrated that cisplatin nanoparticles had equivalent growth-inhibiting effects on Lewis lung carcinoma cells compared to free cisplatin. In vivo evidences showed cisplatin nanoparticles had superior antitumor effects on the Lewis lung carcinoma mouse model with no obvious side effects. All results indicated that optimizing the ratio of block copolymers to obtain smaller sized nanomedicine could act as a promising strategy for overcoming the inadequate accumulation in poorly vascularized tumors.

    Historically, US in the paediatric setting has mostly been the domain of radiologists. However, in the last decade, there has been an uptake of non-radiologist point-of-care US.

    To gain an overview of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US in paediatrics.

    We conducted a scoping review regarding the uses of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US, quality of examinations and training, patient perspective, financial costs and legal consequences following the use of non-radiologist point-of-care US. We conducted an advanced search of the following databases Medline, Embase and Web of Science Conference Proceedings. We included published original research studies describing abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US in children. We limited studies to English-language articles from Western countries.

    We found a total of 5,092 publications and selected 106 publications for inclusion 39 studies and 51 case reports or case series on the state-of-art of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US, 14 on training of non-radiologists, and 1 each on possible harms following non-radiologist point-of-care US and patient satisfaction. According to included studies, non-radiologist point-of-care US is increasingly used, but no standardised training guidelines exist. We found no studies regarding the financial consequences of non-radiologist point-of-care US.

    This scoping review supports the further development of non-radiologist point-of-care US and underlines the need for consensus on who can do which examination after which level of training among US performers. More research is needed on training non-radiologists and on the costs-to-benefits of non-radiologist point-of-care US.

    The efficacy of radiofrequency (RF) in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is as yet unknown. The aim was to compare the effect of fractional microablative RF and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) against the combination of both therapies (RF + PFMT) in the SUI and on genitourinary syndrome (GSM).

    This was a three-arm randomized clinical trial including 117 climacteric women with SUI. In group 1 the treatment consisted of three monthly sessions of RF; in group 2 it was 12 weekly PFMT sessions; in group 3 it was RF + PFMT simultaneously. Assessments at baseline and 30days after the end of therapy were conducted using validated questionnaires and scales for urinary, vaginal, and sexual functions and cytology for vaginal trophy.

    Urinary scores improved significantly in all three groups post-treatment (p < 0.001) with a higher improvement in the RF + PFMT group (p = 0.002). One-hour pad test results were equal in the three groups. Vaginal symptoms showed an incremental improvement in RF (p < 0.007), and vaginal laxity showed a similar improvement in the three groups (p = 0.323). Vaginal Health Index score was more significant in RF and RF + PFMT groups. Sexual function improved in RF and PFMT.

Investigation of the sampled sediments comprised optical and electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and physicochemical and toxicological analyses. Additionally, data provided by the harbours administrations on dredged volumes, sedimentology, and coastal dynamics were compared. It was determined that the studied sediments, especially the ones from both tidal deltas, have similar characteristics, including physical and chemical parameters. It was also confirmed that tidal deltas are depositional areas with low potential to accumulate pollutants. Therefore, the current disposal of this scarce sandy material during dredging might not be beneficial, considering the significant sand removal amount from the coastal depositional system.

To gain an overview of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US in paediatrics. We conducted a scoping review regarding the uses of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US, quality of examinations and training, patient perspective, financial costs and legal consequences following the use of non-radiologist point-of-care US. We conducted an advanced search of the following databases Medline, Embase and Web of Science Conference Proceedings. We included published original research studies describing abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US in children. We limited studies to English-language articles from Western countries. We found a total of 5,092 publications and selected 106 publications for inclusion 39 studies and 51 case reports or case series on the state-of-art of abdominal non-radiologist point-of-care US, 14 on training of non-radiologists, and 1 each on possible harms following non-radiologist point-of-care US and patient satisfaction. According to included studies, non-radiologist point-of-care US is increasingly used, but no standardised training guidelines exist. We found no studies regarding the financial consequences of non-radiologist point-of-care US. This scoping review supports the further development of non-radiologist point-of-care US and underlines the need for consensus on who can do which examination after which level of training among US performers. The efficacy of radiofrequency (RF) in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is as yet unknown. The aim was to compare the effect of fractional microablative RF and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) against the combination of both therapies (RF + PFMT) in the SUI and on genitourinary syndrome (GSM). This was a three-arm randomized clinical trial including 117 climacteric women with SUI. In group 1 the treatment consisted of three monthly sessions of RF; in group 2 it was 12 weekly PFMT sessions; in group 3 it was RF + PFMT simultaneously. Assessments at baseline and 30days after the end of therapy were conducted using validated questionnaires and scales for urinary, vaginal, and sexual functions and cytology for vaginal trophy. Urinary scores improved significantly in all three groups post-treatment (p < 0.001) with a higher improvement in the RF + PFMT group (p = 0.002). One-hour pad test results were equal in the three groups.   • Even less is known regarding the applicability of vaccine use for testing (in vitro/vivo) to ascertain pathogenesis or predict reactivity risk. Expedient and thorough research-based evaluation of patients who have suffered anaphylactic vaccine reactions and prospective clinical trials in putative at-risk individuals are needed to address these concerns during a public health crisis.Biologics, like peptides, proteins and nucleic acids, have proven to be promising drugs for the treatment of numerous diseases. However, besides the off label use of the monoclonal antibody bevacizumab for the treatment of corneal neovascularization, to date no other biologics for corneal diseases have reached the market. Indeed, delivering biologics in the eye remains a challenge, especially at the level of the cornea. While it appears to be a rather accessible tissue for the administration of drugs, the cornea in fact presents several anatomical barriers to delivery. In addition, also intracellular delivery barriers need to be overcome to achieve a promising therapeutic outcome with biologics. This review outlines efforts that have been reported to successfully deliver biologics into the cornea. Biochemical and physical methods for achieving delivery of biologics in the cornea are discussed, with a critical view on their efficacy in overcoming corneal barriers.Increasing emphasis is being placed on using in vitro permeation test (IVPT) results for topical products as a surrogate for their in vivo behaviour. This study sought to relate in vivo plasma concentration - time pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles after topical application of drug products to IVPT findings with mechanistic diffusion and compartment models that are now widely used to describe permeation of solutes across the main skin transport barrier, the stratum corneum. Novel in vivo forms of the diffusion and compartment-in-series models were developed by combining their IVPT model forms with appropriate in vivo disposition functions. Available in vivo and IVPT data were then used with the models in data analyses, including the estimation of prediction intervals for in vivo plasma concentrations derived from IVPT data. The resulting predicted in vivo plasma concentration - time profiles for the full models corresponded closely with the observed results for both nitroglycerin and rivastigmine at all times. In contrast, reduced forms of these in vivo models led to discrepancies between model predictions and observed results at early times. A two-stage deconvolution procedure was also used to estimate the in vivo cumulative amount absorbed and shown to be linearly related to that from IVPT, with an acceptable prediction error. External predictability was also shown using a separate set of in vitro and in vivo data for different nitroglycerin patches. This work suggests that mechanistic and physiologically based pharmacokinetic models can be used to predict in vivo behaviour from IVPT data for topical products.Glycogen storage disease type IV (GSD IV) is caused by mutations in the glycogen branching enzyme gene (GBE1) that lead to the accumulation of aberrant glycogen in affected tissues, mostly in the liver. Women were also grouped based on their body mass index ( less then 25 kg/m2, 25-29.9 kg/m2, and ≥ 30 kg/m2) and waist-to-height ratio (≥0.50 or less then 0.50). Two coders independently identified eligible studies and coded effect sizes and study characteristics. We pooled effect sizes using random-effects meta-analysis. We identified 59 eligible studies of 265,083 patients. Receiving a provider recommendation was associated with higher HPV vaccine initiation (pooled OR = 10.1, 95% CI 7.6-13.4). HPV vaccine initiation was 24% for patients without and 60% for patients with a provider recommendation. The pooled effect size for provider recommendation and initiation was smaller for probability samples, clinical records, and NIS-Teen (all p less then 0.

The photoresponsive imprinted polymers were prepared with polymethyl methacrylate containing a mass of ester groups as core, sulfamethazine as template molecules, self-synthesized water-soluble 4-[(4-methacryloyloxy)phenylazo] benzenesulfonic acid as a photoresponsive monomer, and ethylene dimethacrylate as cross-linker. Interestingly, the imprinted polymer can specifically adsorb sulfamethazine under dark and 440 nm irradiation, and release it at 365 nm. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity reached 12.5 mg⋅g-1 , and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 80 min. Moreover, the imprinted polymers display excellent reusability, with almost no performance loss after four times photo-controlled adsorption-release cycles, and the imprinted polymers have excellent selectively for sulfamethazine (imprinting factor = 3.01). To assist translation to clinical practice we investigated OMs effect on explanted human failing hearts, specifically; contractile dynamics, interaction with the β1 -adrenoceptor (AR) agonist (-)-noradrenaline and spontaneous contractions. Left and right ventricular trabeculae from 13 explanted failing hearts, and trabeculae from 58 right atrial appendages of non-failing hearts, were incubated with or without a single concentration of OM for 120 min. Time to peak force (TPF) and 50% relaxation (t50% ) were recorded. In other experiments, trabeculae were observed for spontaneous contractions and cumulative concentration-effect curves were established to (-)-noradrenaline at β1 -ARs in the absence or presence of OM. OM prolonged TPF and t50% in ventricular trabeculae (600 nM, 2 µM, p less then .001). OM had no significant inotropic effect but reduced time dependent deterioration in contractile strength compared to control (p less then .001). A non-randomized, open-label, single-dose, one sequence crossover study with 2 arms was conducted. We gave 26 healthy volunteers a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ followed by a daily oral dose of either 400 mg efavirenz or 100 mg ritonavir for 14 consecutive days. On day 14, they ingested a single 40 mg/kg dose of PZQ. We measured plasma levels up to 12 h on day 1 and day 14. Samples were analyzed by LC-MS. These multifunctional initiation complexes may support co-transcriptional processing, such as the removal of the 5' leader of precursor tRNA by RNase P. Based on this model, maturation of tRNA is predetermined prior to transcription initiation.Core-shell structured photoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymers were developed for the determination of sulfamethazine in milk samples. The photoresponsive imprinted polymers were prepared with polymethyl methacrylate containing a mass of ester groups as core, sulfamethazine as template molecules, self-synthesized water-soluble 4-[(4-methacryloyloxy)phenylazo] benzenesulfonic acid as a photoresponsive monomer, and ethylene dimethacrylate as cross-linker. Interestingly, the imprinted polymer can specifically adsorb sulfamethazine under dark and 440 nm irradiation, and release it at 365 nm. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity reached 12.5 mg⋅g-1 , and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 80 min. Moreover, the imprinted polymers display excellent reusability, with almost no performance loss after four times photo-controlled adsorption-release cycles, and the imprinted polymers have excellent selectively for sulfamethazine (imprinting factor = 3.01). In the end, the imprinted polymers realized effective separation and enrichment of sulfamethazine in milk, with a recovery rate of over 97.5%. The material can be used as a solid-phase extractant in the process of enrichment and separation for the quantitative detection of sulfamethazine in milk samples.Omecamtiv mecarbil (OM) is a novel medicine for systolic heart failure, targeting myosin to enhance cardiomyocyte performance. To assist translation to clinical practice we investigated OMs effect on explanted human failing hearts, specifically; contractile dynamics, interaction with the β1 -adrenoceptor (AR) agonist (-)-noradrenaline and spontaneous contractions. Left and right ventricular trabeculae from 13 explanted failing hearts, and trabeculae from 58 right atrial appendages of non-failing hearts, were incubated with or without a single concentration of OM for 120 min. Time to peak force (TPF) and 50% relaxation (t50% ) were recorded. In other experiments, trabeculae were observed for spontaneous contractions and cumulative concentration-effect curves were established to (-)-noradrenaline at β1 -ARs in the absence or presence of OM. OM prolonged TPF and t50% in ventricular trabeculae (600 nM, 2 µM, p less then .001). OM had no significant inotropic effect but reduced time dependent deterioration in contractile strength compared to control (p less then .001). OM did not affect the generation of spontaneous contractions. The potency of (-)-noradrenaline (pEC50 6.05 ± 0.10), for inotropic effect, was unchanged in the presence of OM 600 nM or 2 µM. A non-randomized, open-label, single-dose, one sequence crossover study with 2 arms was conducted. We gave 26 healthy volunteers a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ followed by a daily oral dose of either 400 mg efavirenz or 100 mg ritonavir for 14 consecutive days. On day 14, they ingested a single 40 mg/kg dose of PZQ. We measured plasma levels up to 12 h on day 1 and day 14. Samples were analyzed by LC-MS. Pharmacokinetic analysis was conducted in WinNonlin to determine the primary endpoints (plasma T1/2 , Cmin , and AUC). Efavirenz had a significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of PZQ (p less then .05), reducing the AUC by 4-fold (1213.15 vs. 281.35 h·ng/ml for R-PZQ and 5669 vs. 871.84 h·ng/ml for S-PZQ). Herein, we investigate the efficiency of 1 H and 13 C hyperpolarization of acetate and pyruvate esters with ethyl, propyl and allyl alcoholic moieties using heterogeneous hydrogenation of corresponding vinyl, allyl and propargyl precursors in isotopically unlabeled and 1-13 C-enriched forms with parahydrogen over Rh/TiO2 catalysts in methanol-d4 and in D2 O. The maximum obtained 1 H polarization was 0.6±0.2 % (for propyl acetate in CD3 OD), while the highest 13 C polarization was 0.10±0.03 % (for ethyl acetate in CD3 OD). Hyperpolarization of acetate esters surpassed that of pyruvates, while esters with a triple carbon-carbon bond in unsaturated alcoholic moiety were less efficient as parahydrogen-induced polarization precursors than esters with a double bond.   • In this study, we developed a method to analyze liposomal binding to a cell membrane receptor using fluorescence-labeled liposomes and demonstrated that scavenger class B type 1 (SR-B1) plays a crucial role in binding of liposomes containing phosphatidylcholine (PC) to HEK293T cell membrane and phosphatidic acid (PA) can modulate it. Site-directed mutagenesis of SR-B1 revealed that S112F and T175A mutations in its ectodomain abrogated binding and endocytosis of PC liposomes in HEK293T cells. K151A and K156A mutations attenuated their binding and endocytosis too. Although the effects of mutations on binding and endocytosis were similar between PC liposomes and PC/PA and PA liposomes, SR-B1 dependency appeared to be PC > PC/PA > PA liposomes. Our data indicate that (i) nanoparticles including high-density lipoprotein (HDL), silica, and liposomes bind to a common or close site of SR-B1, and (ii) PC/PA and PA liposomes bind not only to SR-B1 but also other receptor(s) in HEK293T cells. In addition, PC/PA liposomes induced lipid droplet (LD) formation in HEK293T cells more than PC liposomes. Treatment of HEK293T cells with SR-B1 siRNA suppressed PC/PA liposome-induced LD formation. This study shows the important functions of a highly reducing polyketide synthase, Pks11, in Beauveria bassiana, a filamentous fungal insect pathogen used worldwide for pest biocontrol. The deletion of pks11 led to severe defects in conidial yields on different media and a decrease of 36.27% in the mean thickness of conidial cell wall under normal conditions. Compared with the wild-type, Δpks11 showed higher tolerance to oxidation and increased sensitivity to high temperature during colony growth. Moreover, the lack of pks11 caused a decrease in conidial germination after exposure to UV radiation but did not affect the virulence of B. bassiana against Galleria mellonella larvae via typical cuticle infection. These findings concurred with the alteration in the transcript levels of some phenotype-related genes. These data suggested that pks11 played vital roles in the asexual development, cell wall integrity, and fungal responses to oxidation, high temperature, and UV irradiation of B. bassiana.Pangolins are the most trafficked wild mammals, with their scales in high demand. Scales are often the only part of the animal confiscated from the trade, but they represent accessible material for forensic investigations, including for sexing. This study aimed to develop a sexing tool for Temminck's pangolin, using scales for hormone quantification. Scales from males and females were liquidised using keratinase and the resulting suspension analysed for progestagen and androgen metabolite (scPM and scAM) concentrations. Scale PM and scAM concentrations were compared between sexes, while overall median values for scPM and scAM, as well as a ratio of scPM to scAM (P/A) were used as boundary values for sex identification. Neither scPM nor scAM concentrations were significantly different between the sexes and concentrations of a juvenile and sub-adult male overlapped with females, possibly indicating later sexual maturity in males. Boundary values for scAM concentrations and the P/A ratio predicted sex with 100% accuracy for females and 78% for males, while the accuracies for the scPM boundary value were lower. When only adult individuals are considered, scAM and P/A ratio boundaries are 100% accurate for both sexes. However, the role of changes in endocrine signaling components within integral target tissues, such as flight muscles, in modulating the transition into a migratory state remains poorly understood. Here, we examined changes in gene expression levels of and correlational patterns (i.e., integration) between 8 endocrine signalinid, however, differ between the two life stages, suggesting the contrasting demands of different life stages may shape entire endocrine signaling networks within target tissues rather than individual components. Our work aligns with previous endocrine studies on pine siskins and, viewed together, suggest additional studies are needed to understand the endocrine system's role in mediating the development and progression of the vernal migratory state in this species. By monitoring and comparing stress-related faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) concentrations of tigers housed at different locations, and free ranging tigers in natural tiger reserves, this project aimed to get a better understanding of the impact of extrinsic factors on adrenocortical function as a measure of stress.

  • Motivation plays an important role in students' school behavior, and research has established that students' learning environment experiences such as teachers' behavior toward them contribute to their motivation and behavior at school. Self-determination theory (SDT) offers an interesting frame of reference in the study of the relationship between students' learning experiences at school and their school behavior. Considering three basic psychological needs (the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness), the SDT points to the importance of nutriments and support in the social environment in order to allow growth in motivation, engagement, and (psychological) well-functioning. In addition, thwarting these needs is supposed to contribute to maladaptive functioning. Teachers can play an important role in the fulfillment of students' basic psychological needs by delivering support (autonomy support, structure, and involvement); however, controlling instructional behavior, chaos in the classroom, and teacherer effects on students' procrastination behavior (maladaptive functioning). Furthermore, evidence was found that boys often seemed to be more sensitive to their teachers' behavior than girls. The findings highlight the importance of both teachers' need-supportive and need-thwarting behaviors in daily classrooms and contribute to deepen our insight into and understanding of factors leading to adaptive and maladaptive functioning of boys and girls in relation to learning tasks at school.In this proof-of-concept study, we assessed the potential for immersive virtual reality (VR) to measure transfer following strategic memory training, and whether efficacy and transfer are increased when training is complemented by practice in an immersive virtual environment. Forty older adults with subjective memory complaints were trained with the method of loci. They were randomized to either a condition where they practiced the strategy in VR (n = 20) or a control condition where they were familiarized with VR using a non-memory task (n = 20). Training efficacy was measured with word recall, and transfer of the training benefit was measured with a recall task completed in two VR tasks (primary outcomes) as well as a self-report memory questionnaire (secondary outcomes). Testing was administered before (PRE), midway (POST 3), and after (POST 6) training. Participants improved their scores on word recall. Regarding transfer measures, participants improved their performance in the two VR recall tasks but not on the self-report memory questionnaire. No significant group effect was observed. Improvement was found when comparing PRE to POST 3 with no further improvement at POST 6. Thus, strategic memory training improved the memory of seniors with memory complaints on word recall and a transfer task relying on a VR scenario that resembles real-life. However, no evidence supporting an increase in transfer effects was found when enriching training with VR memory exercises.One of the more prominent early childhood interventions focused on the development of executive function (EF) skills is Tools of the Mind (Tools; Bodrova and Leong, 2019). Intervention studies comparing Tools classrooms with control classrooms, however, reveal inconsistent findings for children's EF outcomes. The current study utilizes Head Start CARES teachers assigned to the Tools of the Mind enhancement intervention (Tools; N = 75) and the children in their classrooms (N = 738). Relations between teachers' characteristics (i.e., teaching experience, psychological well-being, and educational background), training attendance and implementation (i.e., coach rated fidelity and observed scaffolding), and the interaction among these factors were examined as predictors of classroom-level gains in EF. Results revealed several significant moderation effects indicating that Tools implementation is related to classroom EF gains for some but not all teachers.
    The pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has burdened an unprecedented psychological stress on the front-line medical staff, who are at high risk of depression. While existing studies and theories suggest that factors such as gratitude, social support, and hope play a role in the risk of depression, few studies have combined these factors to explore the relationship between them.

    This study examined the mediating roles of social support and hope in the relationship between gratitude and depression among front-line medical staff during the pandemic of COVID-19.

    This study used the Gratitude Questionnaire, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), the State Hope Scale (SHS), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale to examine the gratitude, social support, hope, and depression among 344 front-line medical workers in Wuhan, which was the hardest-hit area of COVID-19 in China.

    The results showed that the prevalence of mild depressive disorder was 40.12% and the prevalence of m gratitude as a positive emotion can reduce depression in medical staff by promoting social support and hope, respectively. Gratitude also reduced depression in health care workers through a chain mediating effect of social support and hope. Overall, gratitude can directly foster social support and hope, and protect people from stress and depression, which has implications for clinical interventions among front-line medical staff during the pandemic of COVID-19.Regularities in event timing allow for the allocation of attention to critical time-points when an event is most likely to occur, leading to improved visual perception. In Experiments 1 and 2, pictures of objects were presented with either predictable or randomized event timing, in separate encoding blocks. In the test phase, old and new objects were presented, intermixed with perceptually similar exemplars of encoded objects. In Experiment 3 we attempted to replicate previously reported memory enhancements for scenes. In contrast to predictions, temporal regularity did not affect response times (RT) or improve recognition memory accuracy in any of our experiments. These results suggest that any effects of temporal expectation on memory are subtle and may be sensitive to minor changes in task parameters.

This study used the Gratitude Questionnaire, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), the State Hope Scale (SHS), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale to examine the gratitude, social support, hope, and depression among 344 front-line medical workers in Wuhan, which was the hardest-hit area of COVID-19 in China. The results showed that the prevalence of mild depressive disorder was 40.12% and the prevalence of m gratitude as a positive emotion can reduce depression in medical staff by promoting social support and hope, respectively. Gratitude also reduced depression in health care workers through a chain mediating effect of social support and hope. Overall, gratitude can directly foster social support and hope, and protect people from stress and depression, which has implications for clinical interventions among front-line medical staff during the pandemic of COVID-19.Regularities in event timing allow for the allocation of attention to critical time-points when an event is most likely to occur, leading to improved visual perception. In Experiments 1 and 2, pictures of objects were presented with either predictable or randomized event timing, in separate encoding blocks. In the test phase, old and new objects were presented, intermixed with perceptually similar exemplars of encoded objects. In Experiment 3 we attempted to replicate previously reported memory enhancements for scenes. In contrast to predictions, temporal regularity did not affect response times (RT) or improve recognition memory accuracy in any of our experiments. These results suggest that any effects of temporal expectation on memory are subtle and may be sensitive to minor changes in task parameters.
