To provide strategies for monitoring and treating severe lung involvement in Gaucher disease.
We reviewed the chart of a 5-year-old boy who developed rapidly progressive, severe infiltrative lung involvement of Gaucher disease (GD) and improved after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), along with other case studies reported before December 2019. He was diagnosed with GD (homozygous mutation at c.1448T>C, p.L483P), and started receiving enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) at 17months old. He developed respiratory distress symptoms after 45months of ERT; chest imaging reported diffuse interstitial infiltration of the bilateral lungs and consolidations at the right lungs. Allogeneic HSCT using cells from a matched unrelated donor was performed four months upon progressive respiratory symptoms.
His respiratory symptoms subsided in one month; chest imaging improvement, pulmonary function test improvement, and normalized activity of β-glucocerebrosidase were reported in three months.

This medium is frequently ignored in diagnostic laboratories and in the laboratory manuals of most international health organizations. In general laboratories use a culture medium that contains glycerol, a carbon substrate considered inhibitory for the growth of M. bovis. The use of glycerol-containing medium therefore likely contributes towards underestimating zoonotic tuberculosis. Our case suggests that, in order to improved surveillance efforts for zoonotic TB and increase the notification rate for M. bovis to human TB, the use of pyruvate-containing media should be promoted, particularly in developing countries with a high prevalence of bovine TB, but also through the World Health Organization' (WHO) End TB Strategy and the Roadmap for Zoonotic TB.Surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) is rapidly becoming one of the main spectroscopic techniques for the detection of a variety of biomolecules and biomarkers. The main reasons for this trend are the high sensitivity and selectivity, robustness, and speed of this analytical method. Each year, the number of applications that utilize this phenomenon increases and with each such work, the complexity and novelty of the used substrates, procedures, and analytes rises. To obtain a clearer view of this phenomenon and research area, we decided to combine 76 valuable research articles from a variety of different research groups into this mini-review. We present and describe these works concisely and clearly, with a particular interest in the quantitative parameters of the experiment. These sources are classified according to the nature of the analyte, on the contrary to most reviews, which sort them by substrate nature. This point of view gives us insight into the development of this research area and the consequent increase in the complexity of the analyte nature. Moreover, this type of sorting can show possible future routes for the expansion of this research area. Along with the analytes, we can also pay attention to the substrates used for each situation and how the development of substrates affects the direction of research and subsequently, the choice of an analyte. About 108 sources and several interesting trends in the SEF research area over the past 25 years are discussed in this mini-review.There is evidence of underperformance of the Global Health Indicators, particularly in the WHO Afro-region. Yet, quality, effective healthcare delivery, and access to information about best practice remains a challenge to nurses and midwives in the WHO Afro-region. For nurses and midwives to have the capacity to practice safely and competently they need to engage in mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD). However a composite picture is not available for future project planners, researchers, and policy developers. Published literature from the past five years and professional body webpages were searched. The results of shining a light on the WHO Afro-region member states' CPD status revealed strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The strengths lay in the beginnings of mandatory CPD and annual licensure renewal, while the weaknesses revealed inequity of CPD distribution across the region. The opportunities showed international academic partnership with possibilities for further engagement, and the threats were evident in the health context of the Afro-region, the shortage of nurses and the lesser participation of nurses in CPD programs. The illumination of the CPD status in the Afro-region suggests that a revised CPD landscape is necessary to strengthen the relevance and response capacity of nurses and midwives, as key contributors towards the Global Health Indicators.
To quantify the effects of the systematic internal and external femoral component rotations and tibial slope on the medial and lateral tibiofemoral gaps in total knee endoprostheses.
Nineteen knee cadaver specimens with an intact ligament apparatus were fixed in a custom frame, facilitating physiological flexion motion. Understanding factors affecting the distribution of vector-borne diseases in space and across species is of prime importance to conservation ecologists. Identifying the underlying patterns of disease requires a perspective encompassing large spatial scales. However, few studies have investigated disease ecology from a macroecological perspective. Hence, we use a global disease database to uncover worldwide infection patterns using avian malaria (Plasmodium) as a model for vector-borne disease transmission. Using data on 678 bird species from 442 locations, we show that environmental variables likely to synchronize bird and vector abundance are the key factors dictating infection risk for birds. Moreover, direct effects of host traits on exposure risk as well as potential trade-offs in resource allocation were also shown to affect disease susceptibility, with larger bird species being more prone to infection. Our results suggest that considering evolutionary strategies and factors influencing spatial overlap between hosts and vectors is crucial for understanding worldwide patterns of disease transmission success.Many source apportionment models have been applied to identify pollution sources, and differences often exist in the diagnostic results. The reasons causing these differences have not been fully elucidated. In this study, three receptor models, principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and factor analysis-nonnegative constraints (FA-NNC), were compared and applied for the analysis of 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) adsorbed in street dust samples from Harbin City (China). The differences in the results were caused by different calculation approaches, including matrix decomposition, variable grouping extraction, and nonnegative constraints, especially between PCA-MLR and the other two models. PCA-MLR has no nonnegative constraints, making PCA-MLR less similar to the real world than the other two. Both PMF and FA-NNC have a nonnegative constraint process, which may be the main reason why their results were **** more similar to each other than to those of PCA-MLR. PCA-MLR distinguishes variables into several groups that have the greatest variances from each other, whereas the other two methods find similarities among variables and extract them. In the case study of Harbin City, the contributions of mobile and industrial sources ranged from 47 to 69%, and the contributions of coal and other sources ranged from 30 to 52%. Traditional long-term monitoring of contaminated groundwater sites focuses on measuring contaminant concentrations and is applicable to sites where contaminant mass is removed or degraded to a level below the regulatory standard. The traditional approach is less effective at sites where risk from metals or radionuclides continues to exist in the subsurface after remedial goals are achieved. We propose a long-term monitoring strategy for this type of waste site that focuses on measuring the hydrological and geochemical parameters that control attenuation or remobilization of contaminants while de-emphasizing contaminant-concentration measurements. We demonstrate how this approach would be more effective than traditional long-term monitoring, using a site in South Carolina, USA, where groundwater is contaminated by several radionuclides. A comprehensive enhanced attenuation remedy has been implemented at the site to minimize discharge of contamination to surface water. The immobilization of contaminants occurs in three locations by manipulation of hydrological and geochemical parameters, as well as by natural attenuation processes. Deployment of our proposed long-term monitoring strategy will combine subsurface and surface measurements using spectroscopic tools, geophysical tools, and sensors to monitor the parameters controlling contaminant attenuation. The advantage of this approach is that it will detect the potential for contaminant remobilization from engineered and natural attenuation zones, allowing potential adverse changes to be mitigated before contaminant attenuation is reversed.Land-use planning is an important policy instrument for governing landscapes to achieve multifunctionality in rural areas. This paper presents a case study conducted in Na Nhan commune in the northwest montane region of Vietnam to assess land-use strategies toward multiple ecosystem services, through integrated land-use planning. The assessment employed the Land-Use Planning for Multiple Ecosystem Services (LUMENS) framework and a number of methods and tools, including land-use mapping, GIS-based land-use change analysis, survey questionnaire, rapid carbon-stock appraisal for different land uses, qualitative ecosystem services assessment, and a backcasting technique. Our findings suggest that a lack of participation and acknowledgement of customary land-use practices inhibit successful implementation of current land-use planning and relevant policies such as payment for forest environmental services and the nationally determined contributions. The study also confirmed the contributions of forests and the land-use sector in achieving national emission reduction targets, especially when local stakeholders are involved early in the planning process.

Here, we identify pivotal residues in the first intracellular loop (ICL1), constituting an intrinsic part of the transmission interface. The architecture includes a triple helical bundle formed by the hot spot helix of the nucleotide-binding domain, the elbow helix, and ICL1. We show here that the highly conserved ICL1 residues G462, Y463, and Y464 are essential for the proper cross talk of the closed nucleotide-binding domain dimer with the transmembrane domains. Hence, ICL1 acts as a molecular spring, triggering the conformational switch of ABCG2 before substrate extrusion. These data suggest that the ABCG2 transmission interface may offer therapeutic options for the treatment of drug-resistant malignancies.
This study sought to investigate the relationship between allodynia, psychological variables, and disability among individuals with migraine.
A growing body of research views migraine as a condition of stress-related physiological dysregulation. Cutaneous allodynia is one manifestation of this dysregulation and affects a majority of individuals with migraine, though it is typically discussed in the context of headache pathophysiology. Stress, like allodynia, is implicated in the development of central sensitization and migraine progression. However, the contributions of stress and related psychological factors in allodynia and resulting disability remain largely unknown.
A cross-sectional study at a Southern U.S. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/deg-35.html university queried young adults with migraine regarding headache symptoms, disability, allodynia symptom frequency, and psychological variables using validated measures. Relations among allodynia and psychological variables of relevance were examined, including the association between allodyniang. This study highlights the potential role of the stress response among those with allodynia, and further research is needed to determine if migraine interventions that target maladaptive stress responses may reduce disability by impeding the feedforward loop of allostatic load.

To assess how co-occurring conditions influence recovery after hip reconstruction surgery in children with neurological complex chronic conditions (CCCs).
This was a retrospective analysis of 4058 children age 4years or older with neurological CCCs who underwent hip reconstructive surgery between 1st January 2015 and 31st December 2018 in 49 children's hospitals. The presence of co-occurring chronic conditions was assessed using the Agency for Healthcare Research Chronic Condition Indicator system. A retrospective study of all children with OI who underwent surgery at a single tertiary care children's hospital from 1998 to 2018 was performed. Patient positioning and the use of NIBP cuffs, arterial lines, and extremity tourniquets were documented. Fractures and other complications were recorded. Forty-nine patients with a median age of 7.9 years (range 0.2-17.7) were identified. These patients underwent 273 procedures, of which 229 were orthopaedic operations. A total of 246 (90.1%) procedures included the use of an NIBP cuff, 61 (22.3%) an extremity tourniquet, and 40 (14.7%) an arterial line. Pediatric patients with OI did not experience any iatrogenic fractures related to hemodynamic monitoring or extremity tourniquet use during the 20-year period of this study. There was considerable variation in the prevalence of smoking reported (13.7-49.2%) and survey response rates (8.9-100%). There was a paucity of quality evidence but it is clear that the smoking pandemic is still resonant in Saudi Arabia. Despite support for education programs to prevent the uptake of smoking, policy-driven action to reduce environmental second-hand smoking, and provision of support for smoking cessation, more needs to be done.As global temperatures continue to rise it is imperative to understand the adverse effects this will pose to workers laboring outdoors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between increases in wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and risk of occupational injury or dehydration among agricultural workers. We used data collected by an agribusiness in Southwest Guatemala over the course of four harvest seasons and Poisson generalized linear modelling for this analysis. Our analyses suggest a 3% increase in recorded injury risk with each degree increase in daily average WBGT above 30 °C (95% CI -6%, 14%). Additionally, these data suggest that the relationship between WBGT and injury risk is non-linear with an additional 4% acceleration in risk for every degree increase in WBGT above 30 °C (95% CI 0%, 8%). No relationship was found between daily average WBGT and risk of dehydration. Our results indicate that agricultural workers are at an increased risk of occupational injury in humid and hot environments and that businesses need to plan and adapt to increasing global temperatures by implementing and evaluating effective occupational safety and health programs to protect the health, safety, and well-being of their workers.

Oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF)-has become a widely used, efficient surgical tool for various degenerative lumbar conditions. Postoperative ileus (POI) is a relatively common complication after anterior lumbar interbody fusion due to the manipulation of the intestine during the surgical approach. Few studies have systematically addressed the consequences of acute OP intoxication on cognition and memory of survivors. Preclinical evidence suggests that acute OP-induced effects are associated with inhibiting the brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. The OP triazophos has been used worldwide, although its effects on mnemonic processing are yet to be investigated. Based on the above, the present study investigated whether acute triazophos intoxication interferes with the expression and extinction of contextual fear memory in rats. Hippocampal and amygdalar AChE activity and plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) were measured at the end of the experiment to confirm the cholinergic overstimulation. Independent cohorts of animals intoxicated with triazophos were evaluated in the novel object recognition (NOR) test, a less aversive associative memory task. At the dose of 15 mg/kg, triazophos administered immediately after contextual fear conditioning impaired the extinction but not the expression of freezing behavior. Triazophos poisoning induced no changes in the discrimination index in the NOR test. Triazophos inhibited the AChE activity in a time- and brain region-dependent manner. Our findings suggest that fear memory extinction deficits induced by acute triazophos intoxication are accompanied by hippocampal AChE inhibition. We also assessed whether these associations were moderated by psychosocial and lifestyle factors including depressive symptoms, social support, physical activity, and diet quality. History of childhood maltreatment was not associated with IL-6 in either T2 or T3 of pregnancy, either independently or in interaction with depressive symptom severity. However, in there was a significant positive association between childhood maltreatment and IL-6 in Trimester 2 in the context of poorer diet quality (p = 0.01), even after adjusting for BMI. Additionally, the quality of caregiving women received in childhood was associated with levels of IL-6 in Trimester 3, but only via interaction with concurrent depressive symptoms (p = 0.02). Preclinical evidence suggests that acute OP-induced effects are associated with inhibiting the brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. The OP triazophos has been used worldwide, although its effects on mnemonic processing are yet to be investigated. Based on the above, the present study investigated whether acute triazophos intoxication interferes with the expression and extinction of contextual fear memory in rats. Hippocampal and amygdalar AChE activity and plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) were measured at the end of the experiment to confirm the cholinergic overstimulation. Independent cohorts of animals intoxicated with triazophos were evaluated in the novel object recognition (NOR) test, a less aversive associative memory task. At the dose of 15 mg/kg, triazophos administered immediately after contextual fear conditioning impaired the extinction but not the expression of freezing behavior. Triazophos poisoning induced no changes in the discrimination index in the NOR test. Triazophos inhibited the AChE activity in a time- and brain region-dependent manner. Our findings suggest that fear memory extinction deficits induced by acute triazophos intoxication are accompanied by hippocampal AChE inhibition. History of childhood maltreatment was not associated with IL-6 in either T2 or T3 of pregnancy, either independently or in interaction with depressive symptom severity. However, in there was a significant positive association between childhood maltreatment and IL-6 in Trimester 2 in the context of poorer diet quality (p = 0.01), even after adjusting for BMI. Additionally, the quality of caregiving women received in childhood was associated with levels of IL-6 in Trimester 3, but only via interaction with concurrent depressive symptoms (p = 0.02). The leg blood flow (LBF) and leg vascular conductance (LVC) responses to PLM, measured with Doppler ultrasound and expressed as the change from baseline to peak (ΔLBFpeak and ΔLVCpeak) and area under the curve (LBFAUC and LVCACU), were assessed. PLM-induced robust control ΔLBFpeak (1135 ± 324 ml⋅min-1) and ΔLVCpeak (10.7 ± 3.6 ml⋅min-1⋅mmHg-1) responses that were significantly attenuated (704 ± 196 ml⋅min-1 and 6.7 ± 2 ml⋅min-1⋅mmHg-1) immediately following L-NMMA infusion. Likewise, control condition PLM ΔLBFAUC (455 ± 202 ml) and ΔLVCAUC (4.0 ± 1.4 ml⋅mmHg-1) were significantly attenuated (141 ± 130 ml and 1.3 ± 1.2 ml⋅mmHg-1) immediately following L-NMMA infusion. In this review we focus on recent advances in solution and solid state NMR spectroscopy and in situ AFM that reveal new insights into the secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure of amelogenin by itself and in contact with HAP. These studies have increased our understanding of the interface between amelogenin and HAP and how amelogenin controls enamel formation.Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent stress-related mental disorders worldwide. Several biological mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of MDD have been proposed, including endocrine disturbances, neurotransmitter deficits, impaired neuronal plasticity, and more recently, mitochondrial dysfunctions. In this review, we provide an overview of relevant molecular correlates of mitochondrial dysfunction in MDD, based on findings from clinical studies and stress-induced rodent models. We also compare differences and similarities between the phenotypes of MDD patients and animal models. Our analysis of the literature reveals that both MDD and stress are associated, in humans and animals, with changes in mitochondrial biogenesis, redox imbalance, increased oxidative damages of cellular macromolecules, and apoptosis. Yet, a considerable amount of conflicting data exist and therefore, the translation of findings from clinical and preclinical research to novel therapies for MDD remains complex.

SUBJECTS Team leaders, cardiopulmonary resuscitation coach, and team members during an 18-minute pediatric resuscitation scenario. DESIGN Prospective observational double-blind cohort study. SETTING Tertiary care academic PICU. PATIENTS Children with moderate to severe developmental delay. INTERVENTIONS Each child was evaluated by the bedside nurse with the Cornell Assessment for Pediatric Delirium once every 12 hours and the Richmond Agitation-Sedatsessments were performed by two or more psychiatrists in a blinded fashion. The objectives of this study were to describe the diversity, volume, and patterns of pharmacotherapy in critically ill children. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study was performed with patient admissions to the ICU between July 31, 2006, and July 31, 2015. SETTING The study took place at a single, free-standing, pediatric, quaternary center. PATIENTS Eligible patient admissions were admitted to the ICU for more than 6 hours and received one or more drug administration. There were a total 17,482 patient-admissions and after exclusion of 283 admissions (2%) with no documented enteral or parenteral drug administration, 17,199 eligible admissions were studied. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The 17,199 eligible admissions were admitted to the ICU for 2,208,475 hours and received 515 different drugs. The 1,954,171 administrations were 894,709 (45%) enteral administrations, 998,490 (51%) IV injections and 60,972 (3%) infusions. Infusions were administered for 4,476,538 hours. Twelve-thousand two-hundred seventy-three patients (71%) were administered five or more different drugs on 80,943 of patient days (75%). The 10 most commonly administered drugs comprised of 834,441 administrations (43%). CONCLUSIONS Drug administration in the ICU is complex, involves many medications, and the potential for drug interaction and reaction is compounded by the volume and diversity of therapies routinely provided in ICU. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study was performed with patient admissions to the ICU between July 31, 2006, and July 31, 2015. SETTING The study took place at a single, free-standing, pediatric, quaternary center. PATIENTS Eligible patient admissions were admitted to the ICU for more than 6 hours and received one or more drug administration. There were a total 17,482 patient-admissions and after exclusion of 283 admissions (2%) with no documented enteral or parenteral drug administration, 17,199 eligible admissions were studied. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The 17,199 eligible admissions were admitted to the ICU for 2,208,475 hours and received 515 different drugs. The 1,954,171 administrations were 894,709 (45%) enteral administrations, 998,490 (51%) IV injections and 60,972 (3%) infusions. Infusions were administered for 4,476,538 hours. Twelve-thousand two-hundred seventy-three patients (71%) were administered five or more different drugs on 80,943 of patient days (75%). The 10 most commonly administered drugs comprised of 834,441 administrations (43%). CONCLUSIONS Drug administration in the ICU is complex, involves many medications, and the potential for drug interaction and reaction is compounded by the volume and diversity of therapies routinely provided in ICU. Further evaluation of polytherapy could be used to improve outcomes and enhance the safety of pharmacotherapy in critically ill children.BACKGROUND In patients with hypoalbuminemia after craniotomy, total serum concentrations of valproic acid (VPA) may provide poor clinical insights, owing to saturated protein binding and increased unbound fractions. To our knowledge, the results of this research represent the first regional-scale assessment of temperature related tsetse population dynamics, and the first high spatial-resolution estimates of this metric for northern Zimbabwe. We utilized high resolution multi-color in situ hybridization technology, RNAScope, in a well-established tau transgenic animal, and found that a subset of neurons in the cortex do not appear to express the transgene, but do develop phospho-tau positive inclusions, consistent with having received tau seeds. Recipient neurons show decreases in their expression of synaptophysin, CAMKIIα, and mouse tau in both young and old animals. These results contrast with neurons that develop tau aggregates and also overexpress the transgene, which have few changes in expression of metabolic and synaptic markers. Taken together, these results strongly suggest that tau propagation impacts neuronal functional integrity.
There has been a shift in recent years to using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as first-line investigations for suspected cranial large vessel vasculitis (LVV) and is a new recommendation by the EULAR 2018 guidelines for imaging in LVV. This cross-sectional study compares the performance of US and MRI and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for detecting vasculitis in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA).
Patients with new-onset or already diagnosed GCA were recruited. The common temporal arteries and supra-aortic large vessels were evaluated by US and MRI/MRA. Blinded experts read the images and applied a dichotomous score (vasculitis yes/no) in each vessel.
Thirty-seven patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) were recruited. Two patients were excluded. Of the remaining patients, nine had new-onset disease and 26 had established disease. Mean age was 71 years, and median C-reactive protein (CRP) was 7.5 mg/L. The median time between US and MRI was 1 day. Ovessels, US performs similarly to MRI. This data supports the recommendation that US be considered as a first-line evaluation in patients suspected to have GCA.
Anastomotic recurrences of the colon are postulated to arise due to inadequate margins, tumor implantation by exfoliated cells, altered biological properties of bowel anastomosis, and missed synchronous lesions. In this paper, a case of unexpected early local recurrence after surgery for colon cancer is presented.
A 68-year-old Caucasian man underwent right hemicolectomy for invasive G2 adenocarcinoma. Two months later, endoscopy revealed a wide and well-functioning anastomosis with a hyperemic, hard, and thickened mucosal area of about 2 cm in diameter. Biopsies showed the presence of an adenocarcinoma with the same grading of the previous lesion. Ten days later, the patient underwent a new intervention; the last 10 cm of the ileum and half of the remaining transverse colon were resected, and the patient started adjuvant therapy. Specimen examination confirmed the presence of an adenocarcinoma (G2) penetrating the muscular layer of the wall; also, in this case, resection edges were free from tumoral invasion, and the removed lymph nodes were exempt from neoplastic colonization. The patient was seen in follow-up for about 5 years, and he did not show local or systemic manifestations.

The effectiveness of parenting interventions in reducing the risk of internalising problems in children and adolescents has not yet been summarised. The aims of this review are to assess the effectiveness of parenting interventions in the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of internalising problems in children and adolescents and to determine which intervention components and which intervention aspects are most effective for reducing the risk of internalising problems in children and adolescents.

Perceived discrimination (PD) is known to be significantly related to health outcomes. This link, however, warrants further scrutiny due to the possibility of unobserved family-level confounding. Using the Add Health and sibling fixed-effect approach, we examine whether the relationship between PD and health is confounded by family background characteristics such as genetics, family environment, and childhood social context (school and neighborhood effects). While the naive OLS models exhibit significant associations between PD and both physical and psychological health outcomes, our preferred sibling fixed-effect estimates reveal that the observed associations between PD and physical health outcomes are confounded by shared family background. In contrast, the observed associations for psychological health, self-reported health, and some of health behavior outcomes are robust to adjustment for sibling fixed-effects. Furthermore, we find similar overall patterns in the link between PD and health across races/ethnicities.Analyzing the restructured political economy in 21st-century urban China, this project develops a "symbiotic interaction" model and reconceptualizes the state-market relationship to appreciate the changing inequality patterns. As the state and market have formed a long-term, intimate relationship, dynamic state policies interact with the fragmented labor market to redefine a set of socioeconomic capitals and statuses in affecting income inequality. Drawing empirical evidence from the Chinese General Social Survey 2003 and 2013 data, this paper employs linear and unconditional quantile regressions to compare income disparity patterns along both temporal and socio-spatial dimensions. The findings show that multiple key factors, including human capital (e.g., college education), political capital (e.g., party membership), occupational status (e.g., self-employment), and organizational type (e.g., state-owned enterprise), have all changed their economic returns over time and also played different roles for various earning groups. These findings suggest that we should conduct substantive institutional analyses of the evolving state-market relationship and their interplay to achieve a deeper understanding of the reshuffled stratification order in contemporary China. The proposed analytical framework also has broad implications in the research of other transitional economies.This article examines how Americans' actual experience of gun victimization affects their trust in others and how this further connects to the widely-discussed association between gun crime and trust at the place level. Analyzing data from the U.S. General Social Survey (GSS), I find that, regardless when it occurred in life, Americans who were victimized by guns trust **** less in others than those who had no such experience. In terms of the size of the effect, repeated gun victimization has the strongest effect, followed by adulthood victimization, and then childhood victimization. I also find that individuals who later achieve higher socioeconomic status are better able to recover from the psychological effect of childhood gun victimization, lending support for the experiential theory of trust that people can update their trust according to changing experiences later in life. Finally, combing the GSS data with data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), I also show that higher percentages of nonfatal and fatal gun violence victims lead to lower levels of trust both across and within the U.S. census divisions over time. Findings of this study demonstrate that America's gun violence affects not only just those killed, injured, or present during gunfire, but it can also sabotage the social and psychological well-being of all Americans.Why do some people comply with their obligation to pay taxes while others do not? Scholars of tax behavior, particularly economists and political scientists, have relied on models of state coercion and state reciprocity to answer this question. Using a factorial survey experiment of income tax evasion and a survey questionnaire administered to a nationally representative random sample of U.S. adults, we provide a systematic test of the three different models of tax compliance. The results yield strong support for moral attitudes (both moral imperatives and moral alignment) and state coercion, but little support for state reciprocity. We assess how childhood disadvantages combine with education to affect working and health trajectories. Applying multistate period life tables to data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) for the period 2008-2014, we estimate how the residual life expectancy at age 50 is distributed in number of years of work and disability, by number of childhood disadvantages, gender, and race/ethnicity. Our findings indicate that number of childhood disadvantages is negatively associated with work and positively with disability, irrespective of gender and race/ethnicity. Childhood disadvantages intersect with low education resulting in shorter lives, and redistributing life years from work to disability. Among the highly educated, health and work differences between groups of childhood disadvantage are small. Combining multistate models and inverse probability weighting, we show that the return of high education is greater among the most disadvantaged.
Attendance to sleep clinic appointments is imperative to diagnose sleep-related disorders and to offer appropriate treatment. As part of our quality assurance program, we assessed predictors of no-show rates at our sleep clinic. We hypothesize that no-show rates can be predicted by demographics, appointment type (new vs established) and timing, and insurance status.
We performed a 10-month, retrospective chart review of patients scheduled at Saint Louis University's SLUCare Sleep Disorders Center. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine which factors were independently associated with no-show.
A total of 2,532 clinical visits were reviewed, and the overall no-show rate was 21.2%. Factors associated with a higher incidence of no-show rates included younger age (17-40 years 21.5%; 41-64 years 23.5%; ≥65 years 14.0%; P < .0001), appointment type (new 30.5% vs established 18.3%; P < .0001), and insurance status (no insurance 24.6% vs public 22.6% vs private 15.9%; P < .0001).
