  • Swarms of coupled mobile agents subject to inter-agent wireless communication delays are known to exhibit multiple dynamic patterns in space that depend on the strength of the interactions and the magnitude of the communication delays. We experimentally demonstrate communication delay-induced bifurcations in the spatiotemporal patterns of robot swarms using two distinct hardware platforms in a mixed reality framework. The conservative actuating system shows a central heteroclinic orbit surrounded by a finite number of homoclinic orbits, because at higher periods, an increased lateral Casimir force will be necessary to counterbalance the restoring force. As a result, the conservative system reaches stable operation sooner for the higher conductivity materials (Au-Au), indicating the significant impact of the material optical properties on the lateral Casimir force. Furthermore, for the non-conservative driven systems, the decrement of the Melnikov parameter α leads to a faster disappearance of the satellite homoclinic orbits in the Poincaré portraits, followed by a strong shrinkage of the central heteroclinic orbit toward unstable chaotic motion. The latter is more pronounced for the lower conductivity materials since comparison shows the Au-Au system to be significantly more stable than the SiC-SiC system. Therefore, in actuating systems where the lateral Casimir force could play a significant role, the higher conductivity materials appear to be a better choice to ensure stable operation against a chaotic motion.Stationary periodic patterns are widespread in natural sciences, ranging from nano-scale electrochemical and amphiphilic systems to mesoscale fluid, chemical, and biological media and to macro-scale vegetation and cloud patterns. Their formation is usually due to a primary symmetry breaking of a uniform state to stripes, often followed by secondary instabilities to form zigzag and labyrinthine patterns. These secondary instabilities are well studied under idealized conditions of an infinite domain; however, on finite domains, the situation is more subtle since the unstable modes depend also on boundary conditions. Using two prototypical models, the Swift-Hohenberg equation and the forced complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, we consider finite size domains with no flux boundary conditions transversal to the stripes and reveal a distinct mixed-mode instability that lies in between the classical zigzag and the Eckhaus lines. This explains the stability of stripes in the mildly zigzag unstable regime and, after crossing the mixed-mode line, the evolution of zigzag stripes in the bulk of the domain and the formation of defects near the boundaries. The results are of particular importance for problems with large timescale separation, such as bulk-heterojunction deformations in organic photovoltaic and vegetation in semi-arid regions, where early temporal transients may play an important role.The collective dynamics of complex networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo units exhibits rare and recurrent events of high amplitude (extreme events) that are preceded by so-called proto-events during which a certain fraction of the units become excited. Although it is well known that a sufficiently large fraction of excited units is required to turn a proto-event into an extreme event, it is not yet clear how the other units are being recruited into the final generation of an extreme event. Addressing this question and mimicking typical experimental situations, we investigate the centrality of edges in time-dependent interaction networks. We derived these networks from time series of the units' dynamics employing a widely used bivariate analysis technique. Using our recently proposed edge-centrality concepts together with an edge-based network decomposition technique, we observe that the recruitment is primarily facilitated by sets of certain edges that have no equivalent in the underlying topology. Our finding might aid to improve the understanding of generation of extreme events in natural networked dynamical systems.The dynamics of rumor spreading is investigated using a model with three kinds of agents who are, respectively, the Seeds, the Agnostics, and the Others. While Seeds are always Believers and Agnostics are always Indifferents, Others can switch between being Believer and Indifferent depending on who they are discussing with. The underlying driving dynamics is implemented via local updates of randomly formed groups of agents. In each group, an Other turns into a Believer as soon as m or more Believers are present in the group. However, since some Believers may lose interest in the rumor as time passes by, we add a flipping fixed rate 0 less then d less then 1 from Believers into Indifferents. Rigorous analysis of the associated dynamics reveals that switching from m=1 to m≥2 triggers a drastic qualitative change in the spreading process.

  • Many susceptibility genes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Fucosyltransferase 2 (FUT2) and FUT3 genes are related to IBD. This study aimed to investigate whether these genes correlated with the susceptibility to AS. Questionnaires of 673 patients with AS, and peripheral blood specimens of the patients and 687 healthy controls were collected. FUT2 and FUT3 genes were genotyped using the SNPscan method. Frequency differences of the genes at different levels, haplotypes, and interactions were analyzed. No frequency differences were found between the cases and the controls in all the genotypes and the alleles of rs1047781, rs1800028, rs1800030, and rs812936. For rs28362459, a significant difference in allele frequencies was observed in the total participants between the groups [χ2 = 7.515, Pcorrected = 0.030; adjusted odds ratio (ORadjusted)G/T = 0.782; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.650-0.941]. The frequencies of haplotypes TT (rs812936-rs28362459) (χ2 = 5.663, Ppermutation = 0.039) and TG (rs812936-rs28362459) (χ2 = 7.456, Ppermutation = 0.013) in the total participants, and TG (rs812936-rs28362459) in the female subgroup (χ2 = 5.624, Ppermutation = 0.047) showed significant differences between the cases and the controls. No frequency differences at the phenotypic level were found. Two-factor interactions were observed between rs28362459-TG and age, rs28362459-TG and sex, rs28362459 and rs1047781, and the Lewis and secretor status. Rs28362459-G was related to some aggravated symptoms of AS (all Pcorrected less then 0.05). These findings indicated that FUT3 polymorphisms were associated with human predisposition to AS at the allele and haplotype level. Here we introduce a modified method for whole mount ISH, which overcomes these penetration and detection problem. The method is an all in one solution that enables the detection and visualization of gene expression patterns up to the late larval stage in a 3D manner without the need for tissue sectioning and offers a valuable extension for whole mount ISH by immunohistochemistry in the zebrafish field.We previously demonstrated corticosteroid administration on the neonatal intensive care unit was associated with reduced lung function at 11 to 14 years of age in children born very prematurely. The objective of this observational study was to assess if lung function remained impaired at 16 to 19 years of age in those who had received postnatal corticosteroids and whether the trajectory of lung function with increasing age differed between those who had and had not received corticosteroids. One hundred and fifty-nine children born prior to 29 weeks of gestational age had comprehensive lung function measurements; 49 had received postnatal dexamethasone. Lung function outcomes were compared between those who had and had not received postnatal dexamethasone after adjustment for neonatal factors. Forced expiratory flow at 75%, 50%, 25% and 25-75% of the expired vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, peak expiratory flow and forced vital capacity and lung volumes (total lung capacity and residual volume) were assessed. The majority of results were significantly lower in those who received dexamethasone (between 0.61 to 0.78 standard deviations). Lung function reduced as the number of courses of dexamethasone increased. Between 11 and 14 years and 16 to 19 years, lung function improved in the unexposed group, but forced expiratory flow at 75% of the expired vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second deteriorated in those who had received postnatal corticosteroids (p = 0.0006). In the present study, the intrinsic activity at different signaling pathways coupled to serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, antidepressant-like and pharmacokinetic properties, and the safety profile of two novel imidazopurine-2,4-dione derivatives, namely compounds AZ-853 (8-(4-(4-(2-fluorophenyl)piperazin-1-yl)butyl)-1,3-dimethyl-1H- imidazo[2,1-f]purine-2,4(3H,8H)-dione) and AZ-861 (1,3-dimethyl-8-(4-(4-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)piperazin-1-yl)butyl)-1H-imidazo[2,1-f]purine-2,4(3H,8H)-dione), were studied in animal models through in vitro and in vivo experiments. We demonstrated that AZ-853 and AZ-861, which structurally differ by one substituent and its placement in the phenyl ring, showed varied functional, pharmacological, and pharmacokinetic properties as well as side effect profiles.

  • This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of crocin supplementation on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and lipid profile levels in clinical trial studies.

    A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases for clinical trials published from the beginning up to November 2019. Of the 547 papers identified from all searched databases, eight eligible studies with nine effect sizes have all needed criteria for inclusion in this meta-analysis.

    Results of the pooled random-effect size analysis showed just a significant decreasing effect of crocin supplementation on FBG (WMD -6.52 mg/l, 95 % CI, -11.96, -1.08; p = 0.019) and TC (WMD -4.64 mg/l, 95 % CI, -8.19, -1.09; p = 0.010). Crocin supplements did not have any significant effect on serum TG (p = 0.144) levels, LDL-C (p = 0.161), and HDL-C (p = 0.872) levels. Results showed that crocin supplementation could beneficially have effect on TG level only when trial duration less than 12 weeks and LDL-C levels in trials that used high dose intervention and trials that conducted on subjects with metabolic disorders. However, crocin supplementation did not significantly change FBG in trials that used low dose intervention. Meta-regression analysis indicated a linear relationship between the duration of intervention and significant change in FBG (p = 0.019).

Mercury is also known to be one of the most potent neurotoxins. This case study depicts a 91- year-old who presented with cognitive decline diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease. This patient was found to have severely elevated mercury levels caused by consuming high mercury containing fish. Following diet adjustment and detoxification, this patient's cognitive impairment significantly improved in proportion to the decline in methylmercury level. One year later, his cognition and functional status rapidly and unexpectedly declined. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple new lacunar subacute strokes.     This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of crocin supplementation on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and lipid profile levels in clinical trial studies. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases for clinical trials published from the beginning up to November 2019. Of the 547 papers identified from all searched databases, eight eligible studies with nine effect sizes have all needed criteria for inclusion in this meta-analysis. Results of the pooled random-effect size analysis showed just a significant decreasing effect of crocin supplementation on FBG (WMD -6.52 mg/l, 95 % CI, -11.96, -1.08; p = 0.019) and TC (WMD -4.64 mg/l, 95 % CI, -8.19, -1.09; p = 0.010).     Assess trends in sports-related cervical spine trauma using a pediatric inpatient database.

    Injuries sustained from sports participation may include cervical spine trauma such as fractures and spinal cord injury (SCI). Large database studies analyzing sports-related cervical trauma in the pediatric population are currently lacking.

    The Kid Inpatient Database was queried for patients with external causes of injury secondary to sports-related activities from 2003 to 2012. Patients were further grouped for cervical spine injury (CSI) type, including C1-4 and C5-7 fracture with/without spinal cord injury (SCI), dislocation, and SCI without radiographic abnormality (SCIWORA). Patients were grouped by age into children (4-9), pre-adolescents (Pre, 10-13), and adolescents (14-17). Kruskall-Wallis tests with post-hoc Mann-Whitney U's identified differences in CSI type across age groups and sport type. Logistic regression found predictors of TBI and specific cervical injuries.

    A tRA were significant predictors of concurrent TBI across sports. The increased prevalence of CSI with age sheds light on the growing concern for youth sports played at a competitive level, and supports recently updated regulations aimed at decreasing youth athletic injuries.

    The aim of this study is to explore the significant prognostic factors and propose new nomograms to facilitate clinical decision-making.

    Chordoma is a rare bone tumor. The clinical features and optimal therapeutic strategies are still uncertain.

    Chordoma patients treated in four medical centers of mainland China before January 2015 were included. The predictors for local relapse-free survival (LRFS) and overall survival (OS) were identified by the Lasso regression and Cox proportional hazards regression model. Then the nomograms were developed. Their discrimination, calibration, and accuracy were evaluated by the C-index, calibration curve, and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), respectively.

    A total of 341 patients were identified and full prognostic variable data were available for 276 patients. A total of 179 patients (64.9%) experienced recurrence and 122 patients (44.2%) died of all causes with a median follow-up time of 57.5 (range, 1-325) months. We identified recurrence-relevant factors of tumor size, tumor location, histology subtype and resection method, and death-relevant factors of tumor size, tumor location, resection method, complication, and postoperative recurrence. The constructed LRFS and OS nomograms showed good calibration and discriminative ability (C index 0.79 and 0.76, respectively). The ROCs suggested decent prediction ability with the 5-year area under curve (AUC) value of 0.868 and 0.786, respectively.

    Based on the multicenter case series of chordoma with a relative long follow-up, we proposed two nomograms to predict the prognosis on the basis of recurrence- and death-relevant factors. These findings could be referenced in the clinical decision-making process and provide additional prognostic information for risk stratification.

  • In the first station of central odor processing, the main olfactory bulb, signal processing is regulated by synaptic interactions between glutamatergic and GABAergic inputs of the mitral cells (MCs), the major projection neurons. Our previous study has found that repetitive postsynaptic spiking within a critical time window after presynaptic activation by natural odorant stimulation results in persistent enhancement of glutamatergic inputs of MCs in larval zebrafish.     In the first station of central odor processing, the main olfactory bulb, signal processing is regulated by synaptic interactions between glutamatergic and GABAergic inputs of the mitral cells (MCs), the major projection neurons. Our previous study has found that repetitive postsynaptic spiking within a critical time window after presynaptic activation by natural odorant stimulation results in persistent enhancement of glutamatergic inputs of MCs in larval zebrafish. Here we observed a long-term depression of GABAergic synapses induced by the same protocol. This long-term depression was mediated by presynaptic NMDA receptors (NMDARs).   • Prompted by the urgent demand for identification of new anticancer agents with improved potency and efficacy, a new series of arylamides incorporating the privileged 2-anilinoquinoline scaffold has been designed, synthesized, and biologically assessed. Aiming at extensive evaluation of the target compounds' potency and spectrum, a panel of 60 clinically important cancer cell lines representing nine cancer types has been used. Compounds 9a and 9c, with piperazine substituted phenyl ring, emerged as the most active members surpassing the anticancer potencies of the FDA-approved drug imatinib. They elicited sub-micromolar or one-digit micromolar GI50 values over the majority of tested cancer cells including multidrug resistant (MDR) cells like colon HCT-15, renal TK-10 and UO-31, and ovarian NCI/ADR-RES. In vitro mechanistic study showed that compounds 9a and 9c could trigger morphological changes, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in HCT-116 colon cancer cells. Besides, compound 9c altered microtubule polymerization pattern in a similar fashion to paclitaxel. Kinase screening of 9c disclosed its inhibitory activity over B-RAFV600E and C-RAF kinases with IC50 values of 0.888 μM and 0.229 μM, respectively. These features will be illustrated using three case studies that involve French soldiers who died during WWI. Research of this type is the result of true interdisciplinary and sometimes international, depending on the context, collaboration. The public and academic the dissemination of these archaeological discoveries, both to academics and the public, is crucial and a type of remembrance.Advances in nanoarchitectonics enable a wide variety of nanostructured electrodes with tunable shapes and surface for constructing sensitive biosensors. Herein we demonstrate the fabrication of a mesoporous gold (Au) biosensor for the specific and sensitive detection of miRNA in a relatively simple and portable manner. The electrocatalytic activity of the mesoporous Au electrode (MPGE) towards the redox reaction of Fe(CN)6]3-/4- expansively examined. Leveraging the electrocatalytic activity and signal enhancement capacity of the MPGE, an ultrasensitive and specific electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of microRNA (miRNA). The target miRNA from spiked samples is selectively isolated and purified using magnetic bead-capture probe followed by the direct adsorption on the MPGE through direct affinity interaction between miRNA and mesoporous Au surface.   • The conclusions of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) following the peer review of the initial risk assessments carried out by the competent authorities of the rapporteur Member State, the Netherlands, and co-rapporteur Member State, France, for the pesticide active substance Akanthomyces muscarius strain Ve6 formerly Lecanicillium muscarium strain Ve6 are reported.     To develop a dual-energy spectral CT (DESCT) nomogram for the preoperative identification of KRAS mutation in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).

    One hundred and twenty-four patients who underwent energy spectrum CT pre-operatively were recruited and split into mutated KRAS group (n=50) and wild-type KRAS group (n=74). DESCT parameters, including monochromatic CT value, iodine concentration, water concentration, and effective atomic number were measured independently by two reviewers in the arterial, venous, and delayed phases. Normalized iodine concentration (NIC) and slope k of the spectral HU curve were calculated. Evaluate other imaging features such as ATL/LTL ratio, tumor gross pattern, pericolorectal fat invasion (PFI) was also performed by these reviewers. Independent predictors for KRAS mutation were screened out using logistic regression, and these predictors were presented as a nomogram. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the nomogram.

    The slope k in the arterial phase, effective atomic number in the arterial phase, NIC in the venous phase, ATL/LTL ratio and PFI were significant independent predictors for KRAS mutation. Based on these independent predictors, a quantitative nomogram was developed to predict individual KRAS mutation probability. The nomogram had excellent performance with an AUC of 0.848 and excellent calibration. DCA showed that our nomogram has outstanding clinical utility.

  • The content of polysaccharides in Tuber sinense was investigated by isolation and purification, followed with the further antioxidant studies in total reducing capacity and radical scavenging activities. The crude extract of polysaccharides was purified by dialysis, column chromatography, and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The main components of monosaccharide (s) and molecular structure of single polysaccharide were studied by using methylation, GC-MS, and NMR analysis. One new water-soluble non-starch polysaccharide (PTS-A with the yield of 0.41%) from T. sinense was purified and identified on structural characteristics for the first time. The characterizations of PTS-A were studied on physicochemical properties, main components of monosaccharide (s) and molecular structure. PTS-A was identified as glucan, only containing D-glucoses with the molecular structure of [→6) α-D-Glcp (1→6) α-D-Glcp (1→]n by methylation analysis and NMR. In the determination of total reducing capacity, their reducing abilities could be listed as vitamin C> PTS-A> crude polysaccharides-3> crude polysaccharides-2> crude polysaccharides-1. All of PTS-A, crude polysaccharides-2 and -3 were relatively good scavenger for 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical 2,2-Diphenyl-1- (2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) hydrazyl radicals with the IC50 of 2.81, 4.17 and 3.44 mg/mL, respectively. Thus, the separation and purification of polysaccharides were significant to increase the antioxidant activity in some degree. The method is based on sample extraction in methanol, purification with Carrez solutions and clean- up with Primary Secondary Amine (PSA).The developed method offers an efficient, inexpensive, easy sample preparation and very sensitive procedure for determination of acrylamide in bread. The use of spiked calibration curves for constructing the calibration curve substantially reduced adverse matrix-related effects. Recoveries were between 96 and 105.3%. Good results were obtained with respect to repeatability (RSDs less then 11%). The limit of detection and quantification of the method was 0.3 and 1 ng/g, respectively, which shows the method is very sensitive. The developed method was used for the determination of acrylamide in 26 traditional bread samples (Sangak) collected from Shiraz. The hemolytic activity results show that all nanoparticles exhibited favorable compatibility to red blood cells and no significant hemolytic effect was observed.A new sample preparation procedure and a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method were developed for the quantitative analysis of acrylamide in bread. The method is based on sample extraction in methanol, purification with Carrez solutions and clean- up with Primary Secondary Amine (PSA).The developed method offers an efficient, inexpensive, easy sample preparation and very sensitive procedure for determination of acrylamide in bread. The use of spiked calibration curves for constructing the calibration curve substantially reduced adverse matrix-related effects. Recoveries were between 96 and 105.3%. Good results were obtained with respect to repeatability (RSDs less then 11%). The limit of detection and quantification of the method was 0.3 and 1 ng/g, respectively, which shows the method is very sensitive. The developed method was used for the determination of acrylamide in 26 traditional bread samples (Sangak) collected from Shiraz. The results showed that about 96% of Sangak bread samples were contaminated with acrylamide that 64.3 and 33.3 of semi-industrial and traditional Sangak bread were higher than benchmark levels (50 µg/kg), respectively. There are a few reports concerning contamination of Sangak bread samples with acrylamide in Iran. Therefore, this method could be used for a comprehensive survey of acrylamide in Sangak bread samples in the country.Sclareol is an organic compound with potential anti-tumor effects against various cancer types. However, its precise molecular mechanism in the suppression of tumor growth has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, the anti-proliferative and apoptosis-inducing effects of sclareol with cyclophosphamide were investigated in breast cancer cells and the involvement of the JAK/STAT pathway was evaluated. Altogether these data suggest the potential of sclareol as an anti-cancer agent and demonstrate that a combination of sclareol with cyclophosphamide might serve as an effective chemotherapeutic approach resulting in improvements in the treatment of breast cancer.

RESULTS Of 5722 patients, 373 (6.5%) received extended duration prophylaxis after discharge. A multiple logistic regression showed that the level of health beliefs, frequency of physical examinations, occupation, and the site of the cancer were the major factors influencing prehospital delay (p less then .05). A high proportion of children with atopic dermatitis exhibit asymptomatic sensitization to foods, and skin testing to identify potential food triggers is not recommended unless the patient has a history suggestive of food allergy and/or moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis unresponsive to optimal topical care. Indeed, indiscriminate testing can lead to a high proportion of false-positive tests and harmful dietary evictions.

Apart from mutational analysis, we have predicted host antiviral miRNAs targeting virus genes, PTMs in the virus proteins and antiviral peptides. A comparison of the analyses with other coronavirus genomes has been performed, wherever possible. Our analysis confirms unique features in the SARS-CoV-2 genomes absent in other evolutionarily related coronavirus family genomes, which presumably confer unique infection, transmission and virulence capabilities to the virus. For understanding the crucial factors involved in host-virus interactions, we have performed Bioinformatics aided analysis integrated with experimental data related to other corona viruses. We have identified 42 conserved miRNAs that can potentially target SARS-CoV-2 genomes. Interestingly, out of these, 3 are previously reported to exhibit antiviral activity against other respiratory viruses. Gene expression analysis of known host antiviral factors reveals significant over-expression of IFITM3 and down regulation of cathepsins during SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting its active role in pathogenesis and delayed immune response. We also predicted antiviral peptides which can be used in designing peptide based drugs against SARS-CoV-2. Our analysis explores the functional impact of the virus mutations on its proteins and interaction of its genes with host antiviral mechanisms.The susceptibility of different populations to SARS-CoV-2 infection is not yet understood. Here, we combined ACE2 coding variants' analysis in different populations and computational chemistry calculations to probe the effects on SARS-CoV-2/ACE2 interaction. On the contrary, ACE2-I468V, R219C, K341R, D206G, G211R increased the electrostatic attraction; ordered by binding strength from weakest to strongest. The aforementioned variants are most frequent in East Asian, South Asian, African and African American, European, European and South Asian populations, respectively.

    National general needs assessment using a Delphi process was completed among 93 key opinion leaders in paediatrics in Denmark. Delphi round 1 identified technical procedures. Round 2 explored frequency of procedures, number of paediatricians performing the procedures, risks and/or discomfort for patients and feasibility for simulation-based training. Round 3 included final elimination and reprioritisation.

    Response rates in the Delphi rounds were 73%, 71% and 72%. We identified 37 procedures in Delphi round 1, preprioritised in round 2, resulting in a final list of 19 procedures in round 3. Strong correlation between the prioritisation from the second and third Delphi rounds was identified, Spearman's r of 0.94 (p<0.0001). Top five on the final list were acute neonatal airway management, acute non-neonatal airway management, non-neonatal peripheral intravenous and intraosseous access, neonatal vascular access and advanced heart lung resuscitation.

    The Stop the Bleed (STB) program was developed to bring military bleeding control techniques into wider use among American civilians. It was introduced in Japan in case of mass casualty events during the Tokyo Olympic/Paralympic Games in 2021, and its effectiveness was prospectively evaluated.

    Japanese physicians certified as STB instructors held bleeding control basic training courses from April to July 2019. Participants' knowledge was assessed using pre-training and post-training tests comprising five questions. One point was awarded for each correct answer, giving a maximum total score of 5. (Q1) What is the most common preventable trauma death?; (Q2) Which actions should be prioritized for bleeding victims?; (Q3) Which patients should be transferred to hospital first?; (Q4) How should a tourniquet be applied?; (Q5) How should pain associated with a tourniquet be managed?

    The study involved 157 participants (20 physicians/nurses, 82 medical students, 33 emergency services personnel, 22 police officers/security personnel). The mean±SD scores were 2.1±1.1 before training and 3.2±1.0 after training (p<0.01). The respective percentages of correct answers before and after training were 58% and 75% for Q1, 10% and 13% for Q2, 38% and 55% for Q3, 73% and 89% for Q4, and 33% and 91% for Q5. Q2 had the lowest percentage of correct answers and the poorest improvement.

    The STB program improved tourniquet knowledge. However, it was less effective in improving knowledge about which actions to prioritize for bleeding victims. This may be because the participants were well trained in basic life support and therefore expected to immediately commence cardiopulmonary resuscitation for patients in shock. The STB program is valuable in preparing Japanese people for mass casualty events during the Tokyo Olympic/Paralympic Games in 2021.

    All patients underwent a high-density central horizontal scanning OCT protocol. Two independent clinicians measured the minimum linear diameter (MLD) and maximum base diameter. OCT images were also analysed using an automated 3D segmentation algorithm which produced key parameters including the respective maximum and minimum diameter of the minimum area (MA) of the MH, as well as volume and surface area.

    Using the algorithm-derived values, MH were found to have significant asymmetry in all dimensions. The minima of the MA were typically approximately 90° to the horizontal, and differed from their maxima by 55 μm. The minima of the MA differed from the human-measured MLD by a mean of nearly 50 μm, with significant interobserver variability.
