  • The third most abundant foraging ant, Nylanderia bourbonica (Forel), was more abundant in mineral soil fields than in shallow and deep organic soil fields. Results suggest that D. saccharalis population levels in Florida sugarcane are extremely low under current production conditions regardless of soil type. METHOD In this cross-sectional study, 73 combat-exposed Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans were divided into three groups based on mTBI history 0 mTBIs (n = 31), 1-2 mTBIs (n = 21), and 3+ mTBIs (n = 21). Veterans with mTBI were assessed, on average, 7.78 years following their most recent mTBI. Participants underwent neuropsychological testing and completed self-report measures assessing neurobehavioral, sleep, and pain symptoms. RESULTS MANCOVAs adjusting for psychiatric distress and combat exposure showed no group differences on objective measures of attention/working memory, executive functioning, memory, and processing speed (all p's > .05; ηp2 = .00-.06). In contrast, there were significant group differences on neurobehavioral symptoms (p's =  less then  .001-.036; ηp2 = .09-.43), sleep difficulties (p = .037; ηp2 = .09), and pain symptoms (p  less then  .001; ηp2 = .21). Pairwise comparisons generally showed that the 3+ mTBI group self-reported the most severe symptoms, followed by comparable symptom reporting between the 0 and 1-2 mTBI groups. CONCLUSIONS History of multiple, remote mTBIs is associated with elevated subjective symptoms but not objective neuropsychological functioning in combat-exposed Veterans. These results advance understanding of the long-term consequences of repetitive mTBI in this population and suggest that Veterans with 3+ mTBIs may especially benefit from tailored treatments aimed at ameliorating specific neurobehavioral, sleep, and pain symptoms. One of the central missions of the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD; https//www.yeastgenome.org) is to work with researchers to identify and incorporate datasets of interest to the wider scientific community, thereby enabling hypothesis-driven research. A large number of studies have detailed efforts to generate proteome-wide abundance data, but deeper analyses of these data have been hampered by the inability to compare results between studies. Recently, a unified protein abundance dataset was generated through the evaluation of more than 20 abundance datasets, which were normalized and converted to common measurement units, in this case molecules per cell. We have incorporated these normalized protein abundance data and associated metadata into the SGD database, as well as the SGD YeastMine data warehouse, resulting in the addition of 56 487 values for untreated cells grown in either rich or defined media and 28 335 values for cells treated with environmental stressors. Abundance data for protein-coding genes are displayed in a sortable, filterable table on Protein pages, available through Locus Summary pages. A median abundance value was incorporated, and a median absolute deviation was calculated for each protein-coding gene and incorporated into SGD. These values are displayed in the Protein section of the Locus Summary page. The inclusion of these data has enhanced the quality and quantity of protein experimental information presented at SGD and provides opportunities for researchers to access and utilize the data to further their research. © The Author(s) 2020.   • The regioselectivity of the C-H activation of 1-butanol and 1-methoxybutane by an iridium(iii) phenanthroline complex was studied in the gas phase and revealed activation at gamma and delta carbons. In the ether, nearly exclusive gamma activation was observed. DFT calculations were used to explore the origin of this substrate-driven selectivity. The data show that the iridium(iii) complex is a potent and potentially highly selective remote C-H activation agent.A systematic investigation of the experimental conditions for the chemical exfoliation of MoS2 using n-butyllithium as intercalating agent has been carried out to unravel the effect of reaction time and temperature for maximizing the percentage of monolayer thick-flakes and achieve a control over the content of metallic 1T vs. semiconductive 2H phases, thereby tuning the electrical properties of ultrathin MoS2 few-layer thick films.Asia Pacific (AP) is the largest regional vehicle market and accounted for 48% of global sales in 2019. Air quality is a pressing issue in many AP countries and together with increased vehicle sales has led to intense scrutiny of vehicle emissions. The heterogeneity of socio-economic features and transportation patterns in AP countries has resulted in different emission levels and control policies. We present an assessment of the historical and future emissions of on-road transportation and strategies to tackle emission challenges. First, we collected historical country-level population, economic development, vehicle ownership, and transportation policy data from 1900 to 2020, and forecast future development of on-road transportation activity (both passenger and freight) based on its historical relationship with socio-economic development through 2050. We considered major countries (China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia) individually and other AP countries as a group. Second, we generated a series of em and new technologies are adopted according to national plans, road transportation GHG emissions in AP peak in approximately 2040.Photoactivatable diazidodihydroxido Pt(iv) complex trans,trans,trans-[Pt(N3)2(OH)2(py)2] (1; py = pyridine) is a promising anticancer agent which can be activated by visible light to induce cancer cell death. DNA has been thought to be involved in the mechanism of action of this kind of Pt(iv) prodrug. Such dual-action may contribute to the highly potent photo-antiproliferativity of complex 1 towards cancer cells, which may account for the unique mechanism of action of the photoactivatable diazido Pt(iv) anticancer complexes.As a new antiperovskite nitride, ZnFe3N was synthesized and characterized by almost completely substituting iron atoms at corner positions of γ'-Fe4N. The magnetic interactions of the system with the space group Pm3[combining macron]m are fully investigated. The critical behavior was investigated based on the measured magnetic data around the ferromagnetic phase transition temperature. In this work, the values of critical exponents (β, γ and δ) were obtained systematically using the Kouvel-Fisher method in the critical region. The Widom scaling law (δ = 1 + γβ-1) and the scaling equation (m = f±(h)) were used to reveal the reliability of these values. The values of the critical exponents (β = 0.325, γ = 1.228, and δ = 4.778) are different from those predicted by the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg model and mean-field model, and are very close to those of the 3D-Ising model. Combined with ESR analysis, the spin clusters induced by changes in chemical bonds are considered to be the cause for the existence of an anisotropic short-range ordered state in this ferromagnetic system.Chiral α-hydroxy-β-lactams are key fragments of many bioactive compounds and antibiotics, and the development of efficient synthetic methods for these compounds is of great value. The highly enantioselective dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of α-keto-β-lactams was realized via a novel proton shuttling strategy. A wide range of α-keto-β-lactams were reduced efficiently and enantioselectively by Ni-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation, providing the corresponding α-hydroxy-β-lactam derivatives with high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 92% yield, up to 94% ee). Deuterium-labelling experiments indicate that phenylphosphinic acid plays a pivotal role in the DKR of α-keto-β-lactams by promoting the enolization process. The synthetic potential of this protocol was demonstrated by its application in the synthesis of a key intermediate of Taxol and (+)-epi-Cytoxazone.Herein, we report the synthesis and total structure of a Cu-rich alloy nanocluster protected by twelve adamantanethiolate ligands, i.e., [Ag13Cu10(SAdm)12]X3 (-SAdm = SC10H15, X = counterion), which was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structure determination and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). X-ray crystallographic analysis indicated that [Ag13Cu10(SAdm)12]X3 consisted of an icosahedral Ag13 core, covered by a cage-like shell of Cu10(SAdm)12. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations on the geometric and electronic structures and KS orbitals and UV-vis spectroscopy were performed on the model [Ag13Cu10(SMe)12]3+ and its monometallic analog [Ag23(SMe)12]3+. This work will deepen the understanding of core-shell Ag-Cu alloy nanoclusters.We have developed an efficient protocol using our two-layer Molecules-in-Molecules (MIM2) fragmentation-based quantum chemical method for the prediction of NMR chemical shifts of large biomolecules. The MIM2-NMR method yields a mean absolute deviation (MAD) from unfragmented full molecule calculations of 0.01 ppm for 1H and 0.06 ppm for 13C chemical shifts. Thus, the errors from fragmentation are only about 3% of our target accuracy of ∼0.3 ppm for 1H and 2-3 ppm for 13C chemical shifts. To compare with experimental chemical shifts, a standard protocol is first derived using two smaller proteins 2LHY (176 atoms) and 2LI1 (146 atoms) for obtaining an appropriate protein structure for NMR chemical shift calculations. The effect of the solvent environment on the calculated NMR chemical shifts is incorporated through implicit, explicit, or explicit-implicit solvation models.

  • Assisted partner notification (APN) for HIV was introduced in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda in 2018 to facilitate testing of sexual partners. While APN is an effective strategy recommended by the World Health Organization, its safety has not been evaluated in a refugee settlement context in which participants have high prior exposure to interpersonal violence. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/e7449.html The extent to which interpersonal violence influences APN utilization and the frequency with which post-APN interpersonal violence occurs remains unknown.

    To explore the relationship between APN and interpersonal violence, a cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted at 11 health centers in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda. Routinely collected index client and sexual partner data were extracted from APN registers and semi-structured interviews were conducted with health workers.

    Through APN, 1126 partners of 882 distinct index clients were identified. For 8% (75/958) of partners, index clients reported a history of intimatePN for this vulnerable population.
    Incidents of interpersonal violence have been reported following HIV-disclosure and fear of interpersonal violence strongly influences APN participation. Addressing HIV perception and stigma may contribute to APN uptake and program safety. Prospective research on interpersonal violence involving index clients and sexual partners in refugee settlements is needed to facilitate safe engagement in APN for this vulnerable population.
    Poor personal hygiene increases disease risk, however, the prevalence of hygiene practices among adolescents is poorly described in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to assess the hygiene practices among young adolescents in LMICs using data from the Global School-based Student Health Surveys (GSHS).

    This population-based study analysed the GSHS data for adolescents aged 12-15 years from 75 LMICs. Data were collected between 2003 and 2015 using standardised, anonymous, self-reported questionnaires. This report focuses on hygiene related behaviours such as tooth brushing, washing hands after using the toilet, washing hands before eating and washing hands with soap. The weighted prevalence and 95% confidential intervals (CIs) for the hygiene practices, and overall and regional estimates were calculated with random-effects meta-analysis.

    A total of 181 848 young adolescents from 75 LIMCs with available hygiene data were analysed. The overall prevalence for never washing hands were 7.4% (95several LMICs. These findings emphases the need for hygiene and health education targeting young adolescents in LMICs.

    The adjusted relative risk (RR) of travelling to a clinic more than 5 km from that nearest to their home for HIV patients compared to those being treated for other conditions was 2.78 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.23-3.48). The adjusted Cox regression model showed no evidence for an association between the distance travelled to a clinic and the rate of late visits. (RR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.99-1.00).

This study investigates the associations of service density and service proximity with health care utilisation in Indonesia and the parts they may play in geographic inequalities in health care use.

    Using data from a nationally representative survey (N = 649 625), we conducted a cross-sectional study and employed multilevel logistic regression to assess whether supply-side factors relating to service density and service proximity affect the variability of outpatient and inpatient care utilisation across 497 Indonesian districts. We used median odds ratios (MORs) to estimate the extent of geographical inequalities. Changes in the MOR values indicated the role played by the supply-side factors in the inequalities.

    Assisted partner notification (APN) for HIV was introduced in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda in 2018 to facilitate testing of sexual partners. While APN is an effective strategy recommended by the World Health Organization, its safety has not been evaluated in a refugee settlement context in which participants have high prior exposure to interpersonal violence. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/e7449.html The extent to which interpersonal violence influences APN utilization and the frequency with which post-APN interpersonal violence occurs remains unknown. To explore the relationship between APN and interpersonal violence, a cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted at 11 health centers in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda. Routinely collected index client and sexual partner data were extracted from APN registers and semi-structured interviews were conducted with health workers. Through APN, 1126 partners of 882 distinct index clients were identified. For 8% (75/958) of partners, index clients reported a history of intimatePN for this vulnerable population. This population-based study analysed the GSHS data for adolescents aged 12-15 years from 75 LMICs. Data were collected between 2003 and 2015 using standardised, anonymous, self-reported questionnaires. This report focuses on hygiene related behaviours such as tooth brushing, washing hands after using the toilet, washing hands before eating and washing hands with soap. The weighted prevalence and 95% confidential intervals (CIs) for the hygiene practices, and overall and regional estimates were calculated with random-effects meta-analysis. A total of 181 848 young adolescents from 75 LIMCs with available hygiene data were analysed. The overall prevalence for never washing hands were 7.4% (95several LMICs.   • The occurrence and spatial distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in seawater and surficial sediment samples (N = 19 and 45, respectively) from the South China Sea (SCS) in 2018 were investigated, and the correlation between BFRs and site parameters (total organic carbon, depth, etc.) were assessed by principal component analysis. The concentration ranges of ΣPBDEs in seawater and sediments were 0.90-4.40 ng/L and 0.52-22.67 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, while those of ΣNBFRs were 0.49-37.42 ng/L and 0.78-82.29 ng/g dw, respectively. BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane were the predominant BFRs, accounting for 38.65% and 36.94% in seawater and 26.71% and 68.42% in sediments, respectively. Notably, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate and 2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine, seldomly detected in aquatic matrices worldwide, were detected for the first time in the study area, and their relatively high levels and detection frequencies indicate the ubiquitous application of these NBFRs in the Pearl River Delta. Zhuhai and Jiangmen are the main sources of NBFRs in the SCS. Preliminary risk assessment on NBFRs using hazard quotient indicates low to medium risks to marine organisms at some sites. The occurrence of NBFRs in the SCS highlights the prioritization of more toxicological information on these compounds.It is highly likely that the toxicity of water accommodated fractions (WAF) will influence marine microalgae, and consequently lead to potential risk for the marine ecological environment. However, it was often neglected whether WAF can influence the transformation of relative compounds in organisms. The metabolism of amino acids (AAs) can be used to track physiological changes in microalgae because amino acids are the basis of proteins and enzymes. In this study, using marine Chlorophyta Platymonas helgolandica as the test organism, the effects of different concentrations of WAF on AA compositions and stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of individual AAs of Platymonas helgolandica were investigated. The results showed that the WAF of #180 fuel oil had an obvious suppressing effect on the growth and chlorophyll a content of microalgae. The growth inhibitory rate at 96 h was 80.66% at a WAF concentration of 0.50 mg L-1 compared with the control. Furthermore, seven among the 16 AAs, including alanine, cysteine, proline, aspartic acid, lysine, histidine and tyrosine, had relatively high abundance. Under the glycolysis pathway, the cysteine abundance was higher than control, meaning that the biosynthesized pathway of alanine through cysteine as a precursor could be damaged. Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) was an important synthesis precursor of alanine (leucine) and aromatic AA family (Phenylalanine and tyrosine), and played an important role in δ13CAAs fractionation under the WAF stress. Under the TCA pathway, to protect cell metabolism activities under WAF stress, the δ13C value of threonine and proline abundance in microalgae with the increase in WAF stress. Therefore, δ13CAAs fractionation can be used as a novel method for toxicity evaluation of WAF on future.The mosquito Aedes aegypti is a primary vector for major arboviruses, and its control is mainly based on the use of insecticides. Caffeine and spent coffee grounds (CG) are potential agents in controlling Ae. aegypti by reducing survival and blocking larval development. In this study, we analyzed the effects of treatment with common CG (CCG with caffeine), decaffeinated CG (DCG with low caffeine), and pure caffeine on the survival, behavior, and morphology of the midgut of Ae. aegypti under laboratory conditions. Third instar larvae (L3) were exposed to different concentrations of CCG, DCG, and caffeine. All compounds significantly affected larval survival, and sublethal concentrations reduced larval locomotor activity, delayed development, and reduced adult life span. Damage to the midgut of treated larvae included changes in epithelial morphology, increased number of peroxidase-positive cells (more abundant in DCG-treated larvae), and caspase 3-positive cells (more abundant in CCG-treated larvae), suggesting that the treatments triggered cell damage, leading to activation of cell death. In addition, the treatments reduced the FMRFamide-positive enteroendocrine cells and dividing cells compared to the control. CG and caffeine have larvicidal effects on Ae. aegypti that warrant field testing for their potential to control mosquitoes.Inorganic arsenic, an environmental contaminant, has adverse health outcomes. Our previous studies showed that arsenic causes abnormal cardiac development in zebrafish embryos by downregulating Dvr1/GDF1 expression and that folic acid protects against these effects. However, the mechanism by which arsenic represses Dvr1/GDF1 expression remains unknown. SIRT1 overexpression attenuated p66shc expression but enhanced GDF1 protein expression, while SIRT1 depletion exerted the opposite effect. Both the antioxidants N-acetylcysteine and folic acid reversed the arsenic-mediated repression of Sp1, GDF1 and SIRT1. Moreover, wild-type p66shc overexpression enhanced the arsenic-mediated repression of Sp1, GDF1 and SIRT1, which was accompanied by an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, while both overexpression of a dominant negative p66shcSer36Ala mutant and deficiency in p66shc reversed these effects. Taken together, our results revealed that arsenic suppresses GDF1 expression via the ROS-dependent downregulation of the Sp1/SIRT1 axis, which forms a negative feedback loop with p66shc to regulate oxidative stress. Our findings reveal a novel molecular mechanism underlying arsenic toxicity and provide new insight into the protective effect of folic acid in arsenic-mediated toxicity.

  • Most patients whose risk of stroke warrants intervention would be better treated with CEA than with CAS.Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have engendered substantial interest in recent years as pathogenic causes of infections in both human and veterinary medicine, especially in the immunocompromised, critically ill, long-term hospitalized and in those harboring invasive medical devices such as catheters. They have been implicated in infections such as urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and invasive device-related infections, and are responsible for substantial economic losses in livestock production. The advancement of diagnostic techniques has increased our understanding of their molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity, even though distinguishing between innocuousness and pathogenicity is still challenging. The incidence of CoNS varied across the continent in humans and animals (mainly cattle), ranging from 6% to 68% in suspected human infections and from 3% to 61.7% in suspected animal infections, distributed across different geographic locations. Furthermore, there were varying antibiotic resistance patterns observed in CoNS isolates, with high methicillin resistance in some cases, leading to crossresistance against many antibiotics. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, and Staphylococcus xylosus were most commonly reported in studies herein reviewed, while the enterotoxin C gene, atl E gene, ica gene, and hemolysin virulence factors were linked with enhanced pathogenicity. It is extremely important that doses absorbed by healthy organs and tissues do not exceed the threshold for the incidence of deterministic effects.Materials and methods The potential use of the radionuclide lutetium-177 for the palliative treatment of pain in bone metastases is analyzed. The radionuclide 177Lu is a beta-emitting nuclide with a maximal energy of 0.49 MeV and a half-life of 6.6 days (161 h). Two therapeutic agents were considered methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMP). Both drugs contain phosphorus compounds in their composition, which ensures high tropism in bone tissue. For both drugs, biokinetic models of 177Lu's behavior in the human body are created. A number of studies have shown that the radiochemical ly used for the palliative therapy of bone metastases (89SrCl2 and 153Sm-EDTMP) was performed. For 89Sr, the most vulnerable organs are the kidneys, red bone marrow and liver, while for 153Sm-EDTMP, red marrow bone is most vulnerable. For radiopharmaceuticals based on the 177Lu radionuclide, the most vulnerable organs are the kidneys, liver and red bone marrow. We investigated the virulence genes and phylogenetic diversity with publicly available E. coli genomes. Both E. coli strains S17-13 and S17-20 harbored multiple virulence genes, mainly including stx2e and eastA genes. Other important virulence genes (estIa, estIb, fedABCDEF, and hlyABCD) were located in the plasmid p1713-1 of S17-13, which could be transferred from E. coli S17-13 to S17-20 by conjugation. The presence of virulence genes associated with different pathogroups (STEC or ETEC) confirmed the hybrid status of E. coli strain S17-13. Phylogenetic analysis showed that STEC/ETEC S17-13, STEC S17-20, avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) O78, and APEC ACN001 are located in the same evolutionary branch, indicating that they may originate from a common ancestor. It is crucial to understand the phylogeny of pathogenic bacteria to evaluate how they have evolved and to monitor the emergence of potential new pathogens. The article examines first the period of agenda setting when the tax was included in the President's fiscal reform package; and second, the period of legislative passage, when the bill was introduced in Congress and was passed. The analysis uses Kingdon's three streams theory of agenda setting, to explain how the tax emerged on the agenda and how agenda setting shaped and enabled legislative passage. The article offers five lessons related to the politics of passing the SSB tax in Mexico.     Most patients whose risk of stroke warrants intervention would be better treated with CEA than with CAS.Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have engendered substantial interest in recent years as pathogenic causes of infections in both human and veterinary medicine, especially in the immunocompromised, critically ill, long-term hospitalized and in those harboring invasive medical devices such as catheters. They have been implicated in infections such as urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and invasive device-related infections, and are responsible for substantial economic losses in livestock production. The advancement of diagnostic techniques has increased our understanding of their molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity, even though distinguishing between innocuousness and pathogenicity is still challenging. The incidence of CoNS varied across the continent in humans and animals (mainly cattle), ranging from 6% to 68% in suspected human infections and from 3% to 61.7% in suspected animal infections, distributed across different geographic locations. Furthermore, there were varying antibiotic resistance patterns observed in CoNS isolates, with high methicillin resistance in some cases, leading to crossresistance against many antibiotics. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, and Staphylococcus xylosus were most commonly reported in studies herein reviewed, while the enterotoxin C gene, atl E gene, ica gene, and hemolysin virulence factors were linked with enhanced pathogenicity. Advancement in identification and typing methods, including whole genome sequencing, virulence screening, and the assessment of the immune status of subjects in studies will help to thoroughly assess the true pathogenic potential of isolated CoNS species in developing countries. Careful antibiotic stewardship guidelines should be followed due to the ability of CoNS to develop multidrug resistance.Purpose In recent years, radionuclides like 177Lu have been considered promising material for the creation of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. With the therapeutic use of radiopharmaceuticals, the absorbed doses per tumor may exceed 10 Gy. It is extremely important that doses absorbed by healthy organs and tissues do not exceed the threshold for the incidence of deterministic effects.Materials and methods The potential use of the radionuclide lutetium-177 for the palliative treatment of pain in bone metastases is analyzed. The radionuclide 177Lu is a beta-emitting nuclide with a maximal energy of 0.49 MeV and a half-life of 6.6 days (161 h). Two therapeutic agents were considered methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMP). Both drugs contain phosphorus compounds in their composition, which ensures high tropism in bone tissue. For both drugs, biokinetic models of 177Lu's behavior in the human body are created. A number of studies have shown that the radiochemical ly used for the palliative therapy of bone metastases (89SrCl2 and 153Sm-EDTMP) was performed. For 89Sr, the most vulnerable organs are the kidneys, red bone marrow and liver, while for 153Sm-EDTMP, red marrow bone is most vulnerable. For radiopharmaceuticals based on the 177Lu radionuclide, the most vulnerable organs are the kidneys, liver and red bone marrow. This proves the effectiveness of the 177Lu-MDP and 177Lu-EDTMP radiopharmaceuticals.Conclusions According to the results of the calculations, 177Lu-EDTMP and 177Lu-MDP demonstrate the best results for the palliative therapy of bone metastases.Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) and enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) can cause diarrhea in piglets. This is the first report and complete genome sequence of an extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing hybrid STEC/ETEC strain isolated from a piglet with diarrhea on a swine farm in China. We investigated the virulence genes and phylogenetic diversity with publicly available E. coli genomes. Both E. coli strains S17-13 and S17-20 harbored multiple virulence genes, mainly including stx2e and eastA genes. Other important virulence genes (estIa, estIb, fedABCDEF, and hlyABCD) were located in the plasmid p1713-1 of S17-13, which could be transferred from E. coli S17-13 to S17-20 by conjugation. The presence of virulence genes associated with different pathogroups (STEC or ETEC) confirmed the hybrid status of E. coli strain S17-13. Phylogenetic analysis showed that STEC/ETEC S17-13, STEC S17-20, avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) O78, and APEC ACN001 are located in the same evolutionary branch, indicating that they may originate from a common ancestor. It is crucial to understand the phylogeny of pathogenic bacteria to evaluate how they have evolved and to monitor the emergence of potential new pathogens. The emergence of novel hybrid E. coli strains presents a new public health risk. More attention must be paid to these hybrid pathogens during typing and epidemiological surveillance of E. coli infections, which challenges the traditional diagnostics of E. coli infections.This article explores the politics of passage of the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in Mexico, using published documents, media articles, and interviews with key stakeholders. The article examines first the period of agenda setting when the tax was included in the President's fiscal reform package; and second, the period of legislative passage, when the bill was introduced in Congress and was passed. The analysis uses Kingdon's three streams theory of agenda setting, to explain how the tax emerged on the agenda and how agenda setting shaped and enabled legislative passage. The article offers five lessons related to the politics of passing the SSB tax in Mexico. The contact areas obtained from experimental tests and FE analyses were in a good agreement. The peak contact stresses on tibial insert and bushing of BA prosthesis were higher than those of SA prosthesis. The contact locations on the superior surface of tibial insert in SA and BA prostheses were at the middle-posterior and posterior side, while those on the rotating axial surface were at the medial and lateral sides, respectively. This study indicate that the tibial insert and bushing of an SA prosthesis have lower peak contact stresses and better contact locations than those of a BA prosthesis during a gait cycle, which may decrease the risk of long-term complications of RHK prostheses. In total, 186 patients (median 57 years and 138 males) were included. Baseline plasma volume status was -30.1% (-37.1%, -19.4%) on median. Eighty-eight patients (47%) had higher plasma volume status (>-29.8%), and their 1-year survival was significantly lower than those without (67% vs. 87%, P = .001).     To evaluate the association between plasma biomarkers including leptin, adiponectin, adiponectin-to-leptin ratio and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) with risk of glycaemic progression and incident dysglycaemia (pre-diabetes or diabetes) in a community-based sample of African American (AAs).

    We analysed data from 3223 participants without type 2 diabetes at baseline (2000-2004) who attended ≥1 follow-up visit. Poisson regression was used to generate risk ratios (RRs) for glycaemic progression and incident dysglycaemia.

    Over a median of 7 years, 46.4% developed glycaemic progression (n=1495). After adjusting for demographic and lifestyle variables, the RRs (95% CI) for glycaemic progression comparing highest (Q4) to lowest (Q1) quartiles were 1.30 (1.10-1.54), 0.74 (0.65-0.84), 0.70 (0.62-0.80) and 1.22 (1.07-1.38) for leptin, adiponectin, adiponectin-leptin ratio and hsCRP, respectively. In aiding the establishment of IIT Madras, the Federal Republic came into direct competition with the Soviet Union, which supported IIT Bombay but also with the United States of America, which supported IIT Kanpur. The assistance to establish IIT Madras and its governance followed mainly political guidelines, to which educational and scientific aspects were rendered subordinate. When the project was in a crisis after the first State Treaty to establish IIT Madras expired in 1963, the political flagship project of the Federal Republic was not allowed to fail. Instead, the cooperation was reorganized and support increased.
    Refeeding hypophosphatemia (RH) is a potentially fatal complication in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), and its dietary preventive strategy is not well established. We aimed to examine the association between carbohydrate content in the diet and the occurrence of RH in inpatients with AN via retrospective medical chart review.

    We performed a chart review to collect data of patients with AN hospitalized at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine of the University of Tokyo Hospital between April 1, 2012, and February 29, 2020. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to determine the cutoff point of the percentage of carbohydrate content in the diet for the occurrence of RH. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with occurrence of RH as the dependent variable and the carbohydrate content of more than the identified cutoff point as the independent variable adjusting for the risk factors for RH.

  • In order to persist, bacteria need to adjust their physiological state in response to external and internal cues. External stimuli are often referred to as stressors. The stringent response, mediated by the alarmone (p)ppGpp, is central to the stress response in many bacteria; yet, there is limited knowledge regarding the role of (p)ppGpp signaling in bacteria belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes. Like its counterparts in the gut (e.g., Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Bacteroides fragilis), Porphyromonas gingivalis persists in close association with its human host. Given the potential for numerous perturbations in the oral cavity, and the fact that P. gingivalis can enter and replicate within host cells, we hypothesized that (p)ppGpp is a key signaling molecule for stress adaptation and persistence. The operationally straightforward method enriches the efficient synthesis of many difluoromethylated heterocycles in moderate to excellent yields. Here we present a method for non-invasive recording of signals from the human OB with millisecond precision. We demonstrate that signals obtained via recordings from EEG electrodes at the nasal bridge represent responses from the human olfactory bulb - recordings we term Electrobulbogram (EBG). The EBG will aid future olfactory-related translational work but can also potentially be implemented as an everyday clinical tool to detect pathology-related changes in human central olfactory processing in neurodegenerative diseases. We have recently developed high-precision cytidine BEs by engineering CDA1 truncations and nCas9 fusions that predominantly edit nucleotide C-18 relative to the PAM sequence NGG. Here, by testing fusions with Cas9 variants that recognize alternative PAMs, we provide a series of high-precision BEs that greatly expand the versatility of base editing. In addition, we obtained BEs that selectively edit C-15 or C-16. We also show that our high-precision BEs can substantially reduce off-target effect. These improved base editing tools will be widely applicable in basic research, biotechnology and gene therapy.We measured the fast temporal dynamics of face processing simultaneously across the human temporal cortex (TC) using intracranial recordings in eight participants. We found sites with selective responses to faces clustered in the ventral TC, which responded increasingly strongly to marine animal, bird, mammal, and human faces. Both face-selective and face-active but non-selective sites showed a posterior to anterior gradient in response time and selectivity. A sparse model focusing on information from the human face-selective sites performed as well as, or better than, anatomically distributed models when discriminating faces from non-faces stimuli. Additionally, we identified the posterior fusiform site (pFUS) as causally the most relevant node for inducing distortion of conscious face processing by direct electrical stimulation. These findings support anatomically discrete but temporally distributed response profiles in the human brain and provide a new common ground for unifying the seemingly contradictory modular and distributed modes of face processing.

Here we assess the therapeutic impact and mechanism of action of NKTR-214 in combination with anti-PD-1 and anti-CTLA-4 checkpoint blockade therapy or peptide-based vaccination in mice. NKTR-214 shows superior anti-tumor activity over native IL-2 and systemically expands anti-tumor CD8+ T cells while inducing Treg depletion in tumor tissue but not in the periphery. Similar trends of intratumoral Treg dynamics are observed in a small cohort of patients treated with NKTR-214. Mechanistically, intratumoral Treg depletion is mediated by CD8+ Teff-associated cytokines IFN-γ and TNF-α. The operationally straightforward method enriches the efficient synthesis of many difluoromethylated heterocycles in moderate to excellent yields. The direct difluoromethylation of pharmaceutical moleculars demonstrates the practicability of this methodology to late-stage drug development. Here we present a method for non-invasive recording of signals from the human OB with millisecond precision. We demonstrate that signals obtained via recordings from EEG electrodes at the nasal bridge represent responses from the human olfactory bulb - recordings we term Electrobulbogram (EBG). The EBG will aid future olfactory-related translational work but can also potentially be implemented as an everyday clinical tool to detect pathology-related changes in human central olfactory processing in neurodegenerative diseases. These improved base editing tools will be widely applicable in basic research, biotechnology and gene therapy.We measured the fast temporal dynamics of face processing simultaneously across the human temporal cortex (TC) using intracranial recordings in eight participants. We found sites with selective responses to faces clustered in the ventral TC, which responded increasingly strongly to marine animal, bird, mammal, and human faces. Both face-selective and face-active but non-selective sites showed a posterior to anterior gradient in response time and selectivity. A sparse model focusing on information from the human face-selective sites performed as well as, or better than, anatomically distributed models when discriminating faces from non-faces stimuli. Additionally, we identified the posterior fusiform site (pFUS) as causally the most relevant node for inducing distortion of conscious face processing by direct electrical stimulation. These findings support anatomically discrete but temporally distributed response profiles in the human brain and provide a new common ground for unifying the seemingly contradictory modular and distributed modes of face processing.

According to their numerical features, the Stokes parameters and their modulation coefficients are simultaneously scaled. The first Stokes parameter is reconstructed in the first step based on compressive sensing. Then, the last three Stokes parameters with similar order of magnitude are reconstructed in the second step based on previous results. The simulation results show that the two-step reconstruction method improves the reconstruction accuracy by 7.6 dB for the parameters that failed to be reconstructed by the non-optimized method, and reduces the reconstruction time by 8.25 h without losing the high accuracy obtained by the current optimization method. This feature scaling method provides a reference for the fast and high-quality reconstruction of physical quantities with obvious numerical differences.In this review article, we present the current knowledge on PTPN13, a class I non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase identified in 1994. Then, we describe PTPN13 clinical significance as a prognostic marker in different cancer types and its impact on anti-cancer treatment sensitivity. Finally, we present future research axes following recent findings on its role in cell junction regulation that implicate PTPN13 in cell death and cell migration, two major hallmarks of tumor formation and progression.Among coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Staphylococcus lugdunensis has a special position as causative agent of aggressive courses of infectious endocarditis (IE) more reminiscent of IEs caused by Staphylococcus aureus than those by CoNS. To initiate colonization and invasion, bacterial cell surface proteins are required; however, only little is known about adhesion of S. lugdunensis to biotic surfaces. Cell surface proteins containing the LPXTG anchor motif are covalently attached to the cell wall by sortases. Here, we report the functionality of Staphylococcus lugdunensis sortase A (SrtA) to link LPXTG substrates to the cell wall. To determine the role of SrtA dependent surface proteins in biofilm formation and binding eukaryotic cells, we generated SrtA-deficient mutants (ΔsrtA). These mutants formed a smaller amount of biofilm and bound less to immobilized fibronectin, fibrinogen, and vitronectin. Furthermore, SrtA absence affected the gene expression of two different adhesins on transcription level.

  • A reliable measure of PSP-specific midbrain atrophy, the midbrain-to-pons ratio (MTPR) has been reported to support the differential diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). Since longitudinal analyses are lacking so far, the present study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of the relative change of MTPR (relΔt_MTPR) over a 1-year period in patients with PSP, IPD, and healthy controls (HC).

    Midsagittal individual MRIs of patients with PSP (n = 15), IPD (n = 15), and healthy controls (HC; n = 15) were assessed and the MTPR at baseline and after 1year were defined. The diagnostic accuracy of the MTPR and its relative change were evaluated using ROC curve analyses.

    PSP-patients had a significantly lower MTPR at baseline (M = 0.45 ± 0.06), compared to both non-PSP groups (F (2, 41) = 62.82, p < 0.001), with an overall predictive accuracy of 95.6% for an MTPR ≤ 0.54. PSP-patients also presented a significantly stronger 1-year decline in MTPR compared to IPD (p < 0.001). Though predictive accuracy of relΔ
    _MTPR for PSP (M = -4.74% ± 4.48) from IPD (M =  + 1.29 ± 3.77) was good (76.6%), ROC analysis did not reveal a significant improvement of diagnostic accuracy by combining the MTPR and relΔ
    _MTPR (p = 0.670). Still, specificity for PSP increased, though not significantly (p = 0.500).

As part of Swedish national conscription testing conducted from 1968 through 1983 (N = 716,550), the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, as a measure of inflammation, was measured in 659,278 young men. The cohort was observed for subsequent PD events (N = 1513) through December 2016. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) with 95% CI with adjustment for potential confounders. Individuals with higher ESRs were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with PD, as ESR was linearly and inversely associated with PD risk. The magnitude of the association between ESR and PD risk was similar for increases up to 15 mm/h, leveled off thereafter, and was non-significant for ESR values > 20 mm/h. The HR for PD with basic adjustments (age at conscription, year of conscription, test center and erythrocyte volume fraction) was 0.94 (95% CI 0.89-0.99, P = 0.02) per log2 increase in ESR, corresponding to a two-fold increase in ESR. Further adjustments for potential confounders (parental education, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and IQ) scarcely altered the HR. The results suggest a prospective association between high ESR and reduced risk for PD.
    Alteration of patellar height is commonly encountered in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and failure to address patella baja can result in suboptimal functional outcomes. It may therefore be prudent to evaluate pre-operative patellar height (PPH) and to seek risk factors for patella baja.

    Two hundred eighty-five patients who underwent TKA were included. Patient's age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and history of prior arthroscopy were recorded. PPH was measured using plateau-patella angle (PPA) as well as the Blackburn-Peel (BP), Caton-Deschamps (CD), and Insall-Salvati (IS) ratios.

    The average patients' age was 71years with a mean BMI of 30.45. There were 191 female and 94 male patients. One-fourth of the cases had at least one prior knee arthroscopy. Multivariate linear regression analysis identified gender and BMI as variables significantly affecting the IS ratio (p < 0.05). Gender also had a significant correlation with PPA. Male patients were likely to have lower PPA (p < 0.03). Though increasing age had a positive correlation with patellar height, this was not statistically significant. History of prior arthroscopy had no significant effect on any of the four PPH measurements.

    Lower patellar height is significantly correlated to male gender and high BMI. We suggest that obese male patients be screened for pre-operative patella baja. This can help in surgical planning and optimizing results in TKA.

    Barrett's esophagus (BE) is the only known precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a cancer associated with increasing incidence and poor survival. Early identification and effective treatment of BE-related neoplasia prior to the development of invasive adenocarcinoma are essential to limiting the morbidity and mortality associated with this cancer. In this review, we summarized the recent evidence guiding endoscopic eradication therapies (EET) for neoplastic BE.

    New sampling technologies and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) systems have potential to revolutionize early neoplasia detection in BE. EET for BE are safe and effective in achieving complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia (CE-IM) and reducing the progression to EAC, a practice endorsed by all GI society guidelines. EET should be considered in patients with high-grade dysplasia (HGD), intramucosal carcinoma (IMC), and select cases with low-grade dysplasia (LGD). The increasing use of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in the West may allow EET of select cases with submucosal EAC.

EET for BE are safe and effective in achieving complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia (CE-IM) and reducing the progression to EAC, a practice endorsed by all GI society guidelines. EET should be considered in patients with high-grade dysplasia (HGD), intramucosal carcinoma (IMC), and select cases with low-grade dysplasia (LGD). The increasing use of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in the West may allow EET of select cases with submucosal EAC.
