  • Diabetes is an independent risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF), which is associated with increases in mortality and morbidity, as well as a diminished quality of life. Renal involvement in diabetes is common, and since chronic kidney disease (CKD) shares several of the same putative mechanisms as AF, it may contribute to its increased risk in individuals with diabetes. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between CKD and the rates of newly-diagnosed AF in individuals with diabetes taking part in a screening program using a self-applied wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) patch.

    The study included 608 individuals with a diagnosis of diabetes among 1738 total actively monitored participants in the prospective mHealth Screening to Prevent Strokes (mSToPS) trial.     The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can be explained on the basis of a biopsychosocial model. However, psychosocial assessment is challenging in daily dental practice. The purpose of the current study was to field-test the practicability of a novel psychosocial assessment scoring form regarding the reliability of scoring procedures and the opinion of examiners. The working hypotheses were that the scoring results of inexperienced undergraduate students were similar to the results collected by a gold standard and that the scoring form was easy to use.

    Avulsion of the anterior medial meniscus root (AMMR) has a low incidence rate, especially when it is combined with posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, which hasn't been reported in any literature to date. The aim of this study was to share our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with traumatic avulsion of AMMR combined with PCL injury.

    This article reports a 26-year-old male patient diagnosed with traumatic avulsion of the AMMR with PCL injury. After arthroscopic surgery, he achieved remission of symptoms and recovery of functions.

    Whether sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular as well as adverse lower limb events in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and concomitant peripheral artery disease (PAD) is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular and limb events, and death associated with the use of SGLT2i compared with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) among a longitudinal and national cohort of patients with T2DM.

    In this nationwide retrospective cohort study based on the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified a total of 11,431 and 93,972 consecutive T2DM patients with PAD taking SGLT2i and DPP4i, respectively, from May 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017. We used 11 propensity score matching (PSM) to balance covariates across study groups. Patients were followed from the drug index date until the occurrence of clinical outcomes, death, discontinuation of the index drug, or the end of the study period, whichever occurice.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of argan oil (AO) against nephrotoxic effects following overdose and long-term administration of betamethasone (BM). The phytochemical compositions of AO were assessed using GC/MS. Forty eight male Wister albino rats were divided into six groups and treated for 3 successive weeks. The control group was orally administrated distilled water daily, the BM group received BM (1 mg/kg, IM, day after day), AO/0.5 and AO/1 groups received AO (0.5 mL/kg, 1 mL/kg, orally, daily, respectively), BM + AO/0.5 group and BM + AO/1 group. The results revealed that BM induced hematological changes, including reduction of red blood cells with leukocytosis, neutrophilia, monocytosis, lymphocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Moreover, BM caused a significant increase of serum urea and creatinine levels, and renal malondialdehyde and nitric oxide contents with significant decrease of reduced glutathione content. BM also caused vascular, degenerative, and inflammatory histopathological alterations in kidney, along with an increase in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, activation of caspase-3, and decrease of proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression. Conversely, the concomitant administration of AO (0.5, 1 mL/kg) with BM ameliorated the aforementioned hematological, biochemical, pathological, and histochemical BM adverse effects. In conclusion, AO has protective effects against BM-induced renal damage, possibly via its antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and proliferative properties.Deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) is brittle and can break into fragments. Here, we examined whether DBBM fragments have an impact on **** calvarial bone during bone augmentation. DBBM was either randomly crushed (DBBM fragments) or left undisturbed (DBBM granules). Then, DBBM fragments or original DBBM granules were placed onto calvarial bone in 20 BALB/c ****. Following random allocation, ten **** received DBBM fragments and ten **** received original DBBM granules. After fourteen days of healing, micro computed tomography (micro-CT) and histological analysis of the augmented sites were performed. The primary outcome was the porosity of the calvarial bone. The micro-CT analysis revealed that DBBM fragments failed to significantly change the porosity of the calvarial bone as compared with original DBBM granules, despite the slightly higher bone resorption in the DBBM fragment group, 10.3% (CI 6.3-11.6) versus 6.1% (CI 4.1-7.8, p = 0.355), respectively. The cortical bone volume was not altered by DBBM fragments as compared with original DBBM granules, i.e., 79.0% (CI 78.9-81.2) versus 81.5% (CI 80.1-83.3, p = 0.357), respectively. The DBBM fragment group revealed similar bone thickness values as compared with the DBBM granules group, i.e., 0.26 mm (CI 0.23-0.29) versus 0.25 mm (CI 0.22-0.27, p = 0.641), respectively. The histological evaluation supported the micro-CT observations, displaying minor signs of porosity and resorption. The particle-size distribution analysis confirmed a shift towards smaller particle sizes in the DBBM fragment group. These findings suggest that DBBM fragments behave similarly to original DBBM granules in terms of bone morphological changes at augmented sites.

We used the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument Questionnaire and Examination (MNSIQ and MNSIE), measured the vibration perception threshold (BIO), and Cardiovascular Autonomic Reflex Tests (CARTs). Nerve function was assessed by DPN Check [sural nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) and amplitude (SNAP)]. Pain (PS) and quality of life (QL) questionnaires were administered.

    At follow-up, BIO, MNSIQ, QL, PAIN, and SNCV, SNAP, and B12 levels had significantly improved inactive group (

Sleep Disorders maintain a bidirectional relationship with heart failure, as shown by studies conducted in other countries. This study aims to describe the quality of sleep in Spanish patients with heart failure. Materials and methods We carried out a cross-sectional study to analyze the quality of sleep in a sample of 203 patients with a diagnosis of heart failure admitted to an Internal Medicine Service. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ti17.html The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality in our sample over a one-month period. Results 75% of the sample presented sleep disorders. The most common problems included the interruption of sleep (73.5% nocturia and 30% breathing difficulties); 35% had poor sleep efficiency; 33% showed a decrease in daytime performance; 84% had used hypnotics at some point to induce sleep and 35% used them regularly. Conclusions This is the first study to report on the perceived sleep quality of patients with heart failure in Spain. Self-perception of sleep quality differed from that estimated by the PSQI. The prevalence of the use of sleep-inducing medication was very high. The diurnal dysfunction generated by sleep disorders in a heart failure environment can contribute to the development of self-care and cognitive deterioration problems.

Despite the diverging results, a diagnosis of early-disseminated Lyme was made. She was discharged home on a 3-week course of oral doxycycline, and a complete resolution of her symptoms was noted on a follow-up visit. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS? With the incidence of Lyme disease and its atypical presentations on the rise, the emergency physician should be aware of the other rashes that are associated with this disease, particularly those associated with disseminated cutaneous Lyme. Early diagnosis of the disseminated forms of Lyme is critical to prevent the occurrence of life-threatening cardiovascular and neurological complications known to occur with this disease.
    A cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a clinically important form of ectopic pregnancy that carries a high risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. As the rate of cesarean sections has risen, this diagnosis is becoming an increasingly important consideration for providers caring for patients in early pregnancy.

We collected data from three external ED sites in the Atrium Health system between March 15th and April 15th, 2020. Patients were included if they were seen at one of the sites and tested for COVID-19. There were no exclusion criteria. We analyzed the data to identify any differences in patient demographics between sites.

    We saw 580 patients across the three sites, 302 of whom met criteria for COVID-19 testing. The majority of patients tested were Caucasian females. The majority who tested positive, however, were males. Thirteen patients were redirected into the hospital ED for further medical evaluation.

A retrospective review of Salivary Gland Tumor Registry in Pilsen searching for the key words "clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma," "hyalinizing clear cell," and "clear cell malignant myoepithelioma" yielded 94 clear cell myoepithelial carcinomas (CCMCs) for molecular analysis of EWSR1 rearrangement using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Tumors positive for EWSR1 gene rearrangement were tested by next-generation sequencing (NGS) using fusion-detecting panels. NGS results were confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction or by FISH. Twenty-six tumors originally diagnosed as CCMC (26/94, 27.6%) revealed split signals for EWSR1 by FISH. Six of these tumors (6/26, 23%) displayed amplification of the EWSR1 locus. Fifteen cases were aangements were detected in 10/38 (26%) tested cases. None of the tumors had SMARCB1 loss by immunohistochemistry as a possible explanation for the EWSR1 abnormalities in FISH. We retrieved 14 cases of SMARCA4/SMARCA2-deficient undifferentiated carcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction and esophagus from the authors' institutions. The tumors showed similar histologic findings the sheet-like proliferation of tumor cells characterized by discohesion, large nuclei, and prominent macronucleoli with many tumor cells exhibiting a rhabdoid appearance. In 8 cases, adjacent specialized intestinal metaplasia was noted and 3 cases exhibited adjacent high-grade dysplasia. Immunohistochemically, tumors variably expressed keratins and disclosed loss of expression of SMARCA4 in 12 and SMARCA2 in 7 cases. In 2 cases SMARCA2 alone was lost without SMARCA4 loss. A mutant p53 immunohistochemical pattern was seen in 4 of 4 cases, 3 of which showed diffuse, strong nuclear expression, and 1 case displayed a complete loss of nuclear expression of p53, including invasive carcinoma and associated dysplasia, when present. Limited clinical follow-up was available, but 3 patients died of disease within 0.6, 2, and 7 months of diagnosis. We present the first series of undifferentiated carcinoma of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction with this characteristic morphology associated with loss of SMARCA4 and/or SMARCA2 expression. This tumor type likely arises from dedifferentiation of a lower grade carcinoma in some cases, and Barrett esophagus and appears to be associated with an aggressive clinical course.

  • Adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) is a major issue after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). The postoperative dynamic change of adjacent segments remains unknown. Hence, this study using the formetric 4D system (DIERS, International GmbH of Schlangenbad, Germany) to determine the impact of PLIF on ASD, and to compare the effectiveness with traditional radiography for the predication of ASD.

    Eighty-five consecutive patients who underwent PLIF of a single-segment were included. The formetric 4D system was used to calculate the relative rotation angle between the fusion segment and the upper and lower adjacent vertebrae before and at 6, 12 and 24 months after surgery. The range of motion (ROM) and disc height (DH) of adjacent segments were measured using radiography before surgery and 24 months postoperatively. At the final follow-up, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index were used to evaluate the surgical outcome. The patients were divided into two groups according to the ocbe a more sensitive predictor than the flexion-extension ROM and DH for the development of radiographic ASD.
    Ankle arthrodesis (AA) and replacement (TAA) are widely accepted options in managing end-stage ankle arthritis (ESAA). We hypothesize that clinical outcomes would be similar for both interventions.

    We conducted a multicenter randomized controlled trial that collected data on patient demographics, complication rates, Ankle Osteoarthritis Scale (AOS) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) scores. We evaluated pre and postoperative scores within and between cohorts.

    The thirty-nine ankles enrolled had a mean follow-up of 5.1 ± 2.8 years. Total AOS scores improved significantly in both groups; 59.4 ± 15.9 to 38 ± 20 (p-value = 0.002) for TAA and 64.6 ± 19.7 to 31.8 ± 16.5 (p-value < 0.001) for AA at last follow-up. Complication rate was higher in the AA cohort with four major complications (20%).

    We observed a statistically significant benefit with TAA and AA. As a pilot trial, this study is meant to inform on design and feasibility of future RCTs.

    The purpose of our work was to evaluate the feasibility of prostate multiparametric MR imaging at 1.5-T without endorectal coil using an 8 channel pelvic phased array coil.

    A total of 154 patients who underwent mp-MRI were retrospectively included. Patients received a standardized mp-MRI, compliant with 2012 European Society of Uro-Radiology guidelines, with 1·5T magnetic field strength and an 8 channel pelvic phased-array coil. Two blinded readers graded the image quality of mp-MRI on a three-point scale and they scored the prostate lesions according to PI-RADS v2.     Validated biomarker scores derived from both prostate cancer DNA and prostate cancer RNA can add independent information to help predict outcomes after prostatectomy.We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to investigate the self-serving bias SSB in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) to examine its specificity for persecutory delusions, paranoia, and to explore sources of heterogeneity in previous findings.     Adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) is a major issue after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). The postoperative dynamic change of adjacent segments remains unknown. Hence, this study using the formetric 4D system (DIERS, International GmbH of Schlangenbad, Germany) to determine the impact of PLIF on ASD, and to compare the effectiveness with traditional radiography for the predication of ASD. Eighty-five consecutive patients who underwent PLIF of a single-segment were included. The formetric 4D system was used to calculate the relative rotation angle between the fusion segment and the upper and lower adjacent vertebrae before and at 6, 12 and 24 months after surgery. The range of motion (ROM) and disc height (DH) of adjacent segments were measured using radiography before surgery and 24 months postoperatively. At the final follow-up, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index were used to evaluate the surgical outcome. The patients were divided into two groups according to the ocbe a more sensitive predictor than the flexion-extension ROM and DH for the development of radiographic ASD. Ankle arthrodesis (AA) and replacement (TAA) are widely accepted options in managing end-stage ankle arthritis (ESAA). We hypothesize that clinical outcomes would be similar for both interventions. We conducted a multicenter randomized controlled trial that collected data on patient demographics, complication rates, Ankle Osteoarthritis Scale (AOS) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) scores. We evaluated pre and postoperative scores within and between cohorts. The thirty-nine ankles enrolled had a mean follow-up of 5.1 ± 2.8 years. Total AOS scores improved significantly in both groups; 59.4 ± 15.9 to 38 ± 20 (p-value = 0.002) for TAA and 64.6 ± 19.7 to 31.8 ± 16.5 (p-value < 0.001) for AA at last follow-up. Complication rate was higher in the AA cohort with four major complications (20%). We observed a statistically significant benefit with TAA and AA. As a pilot trial, this study is meant to inform on design and feasibility of future RCTs. II. II. The purpose of our work was to evaluate the feasibility of prostate multiparametric MR imaging at 1.5-T without endorectal coil using an 8 channel pelvic phased array coil. A total of 154 patients who underwent mp-MRI were retrospectively included. Patients received a standardized mp-MRI, compliant with 2012 European Society of Uro-Radiology guidelines, with 1·5T magnetic field strength and an 8 channel pelvic phased-array coil. To reach this end, we developed the Medication Ambient Display (MAD), a system that unobtrusively presents relevant information (unless it requires the users' attention) and uses different abstract modalities to provide external cues that enable older adults to easily take their medications on time and be aware of their medication adherence. CONCLUSIONS Gaps in the disclosure of the developer's qualification, funding source, and the complementary role of the app in disease management were identified. App stores, developers, and medical providers should collaborate to close these gaps and provide more transparency and reliability to app users.     To test the reliability and validity of the gross motor items making up a new instrument, Hong Kong Comprehensive Assessment Scales for Toddlers (HKCAS-T) for quantifying gross motor development among children aged 18 to 42months.

    The 37 items were administered to 330 children, including 258 typically developing children and 72 children with gross motor delay.

    Rasch analyzes indicated that the fit statistics of the 37 items were within the acceptable range. The assessment was found able to differentiate between typically developing children and those with gross motor delay and among children of different ages. The raw score reliability (KR-20) was 0.94.

    To evaluate the benefits of myoinositol plus metformin versus myoinositol alone in infertile polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) women undergoing ovulation induction cycles.

    Total 116 infertile PCOS women were randomized Group I (n = 57) metformin (1500 mg) plus myoinositol (4 g) per day; Group II (n=59) myoinositol 4 g per day. Subjects were advised to try for spontaneous conception. Those who did not conceive after three months were given three cycles of ovulation induction. Primary outcome was clinical pregnancy rate after 6 months. Secondary outcomes were improvement in metabolic and endocrine parameters, ongoing pregnancy, abortion and multiple pregnancy rate.

    Baseline demographic, metabolic and hormonal parameters were comparable in two groups. After 3 months of therapy, both study groups had comparable improvement in metabolic and hormonal parameters. After 6 months, clinical pregnancy rate was 42.0% in Group I and 45.5% Group II respectively (RR 0.92(95% CI0.60-1.43) (p > .05). Side-effects (mainly gastrointestinal) were significantly higher in Group I than group II.

    Fifty rats were randomly separated into five groups (n = 10) with different durations (30 s, 5, 10, and 20 min) of exposure of the colon to 4% acetic acid and colitis was investigated for 0-9 days. The extent of the mucosal ulcers, colon tissue thickening, and mucosal bleeding were scored by the Gerald classification system score. Slides of tissues were prepared for pathologic assay using the modified Wallace method.

    In all groups, inflammation was severe three days after the colitis induction, but no inflammation was observed in the 30 s group after five days. Acid contact with the colon surface did not result in fibrosis for the 30 s and the colon fibrosis was mild in 5 min group and severe in 10 and 20 min groups. The tissue damage was higher in groups of 20, 10, 5 min, and 30 s, respectively. Over time, the recovery rates in the 30 s and 5 min groups were higher than other groups.

To evaluate the benefits of myoinositol plus metformin versus myoinositol alone in infertile polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) women undergoing ovulation induction cycles. Total 116 infertile PCOS women were randomized Group I (n = 57) metformin (1500 mg) plus myoinositol (4 g) per day; Group II (n=59) myoinositol 4 g per day. Subjects were advised to try for spontaneous conception. Those who did not conceive after three months were given three cycles of ovulation induction. Primary outcome was clinical pregnancy rate after 6 months. Secondary outcomes were improvement in metabolic and endocrine parameters, ongoing pregnancy, abortion and multiple pregnancy rate. Baseline demographic, metabolic and hormonal parameters were comparable in two groups. After 3 months of therapy, both study groups had comparable improvement in metabolic and hormonal parameters. The shoe's design patterns were grouped and counted in a photographic comparison between the 3D footwear impressions, placed within the test-pits, and any recovered impressions. A grading system was adapted by the authors to score the quality of footwear impressions observed during recovery. The results demonstrate that the preservation and recovery of footwear impressions from graves is feasible. The simulated graves covered with clothing showed better preservation of footwear impressions, but there was no clear evidence that time or depth had an effect. The authors note that careful consideration and vigilant excavation skills are needed when excavating graves which may bear potential footwear marks, as their recovery will lead to an increased amount of intelligence that can link suspects to homicide scenes.Bladed weapons are frequently encountered in violent crime offences including street based and armed robberies, murder, sexual assaults and terrorism. Any resultant penetrating severance damage was then photographed, measured and analysed. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the stab hole size and shape, as a consequence of the design of a bladed weapon (in particular, the tip shape) that caused it. There is a notable correlation between the Assure knife (rounded tip) and no resulting severance damage, as the fabric surfaces were not breached with this knife. This suggests a clear alternative to pointed tip knife blades. These findings will be of interest to investigators of knife crime offences, crime-reduction units, knife manufacturers and practitioners, who share the goal of identifying a safer alternative to conventional knife blade design.Eucalyptus is grown world-wide for paper pulp, solid wood, and other industries. However, their importance and utility in aiding forensic investigations of wood theft have not been explored. This study evaluated nine STRs for diversity and applied them to a case involving suspected wood theft. As expected, three dinucleotide STR markers showed greater variability but resulted in harder to interpret profiles. Four STR tetranucleotide markers evaluated in this study were found to contain additional repeat structures (dinucleotide or trinucleotide) that enhanced their variability but resulted in profiles with peaks at multiple stutter positions and heterozygote peak imbalance. The most promising STR markers were EGM37 and EMBRA 1374. Though less variable, they yielded robust and reproducible DNA profiles. All nine STR markers were applied to a case involving suspected wood theft. Samples were collected from seized wood and from remaining stumps in a plantation. No DNA match was found, thus eliminating the evidence samples as having originated from the forest. Dendrochronology analysis also resulted in an exclusion. This case study represents the first report using STR markers in any eucalyptus species to provide DNA evidence in a case of suspected wood theft.Stem cells fuel the development and maintenance of tissues. The neuronal activity of the octopaminergic neurons is required for mating-induced GSC increase as they relay the mating signal from sex peptide receptor-positive cholinergic neurons. Octopamine and its receptor Oamb are also required for mating-induced GSC increase via intracellular Ca2+ signaling. Moreover, we identified Matrix metalloproteinase-2 as a downstream component of the octopamine-Ca2+ signaling to induce GSC increase. Our study provides a mechanism describing how neuronal system couples stem cell behavior to environmental cues through stem cell niche signaling.

Multimodality imaging is required to confirm and assess pulmonary vascular disease in subjects with major aorto-pulmonary collaterals. We describe 3 children with complex congenital heart defects who have a variable degree of segmental pulmonary hypertension and discuss management strategies and the role of interventional and/or pulmonary hypertension targeted therapies.The utilization of coral waste is an economical way of using concrete in coastal and offshore constructions. Coral waste with more than 96% CaCO3 can be ground to fines and combined with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, silica fume, granulated blast furnace **** in replacing Portland cement to promote the properties of cement concrete. The effects of coral sand powder (CSP) compared to limestone powder (LSP) blended with SCMs on hydration and microstructure of mortar were investigated. The result shows CSP has higher activity than LSP when participating in the chemical reaction. The chemical effect among CSP, SCMs, and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) results in the appearance of the third hydration peak, facilitating the production of carboaluminate. CSP-SCMs mortar has smaller interconnected pores on account of the porous character of CSP as well as the filler and chemical effect. The dilution effect of CSP leads to the reduction of compressive strength of OPC-CSP and OPC-CSP-SCMs mortars. The use of elite breeding materials in the genetic mapping studies will facilitate the detection of genetic loci of direct relevance to breeders. The cumulative probability of NdYAG capsulotomy was calculated by Kaplan-Meier estimates, and potential risk factors were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. The 5-year cumulative probability of NdYAG capsulotomy after cataract surgery was 27.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 22.9-32.6%) for low-diopter (5-16.5 D) IOLs, 14.6% (13.8-15.5%) for mid-diopter (17-24.5 D) IOLs, and 13.6% (11.7-15.6%) for high-diopter (25-30 D) IOLs. The market value and culinary purpose of tomato are often determined by fruit size and shape, which makes the genetic improvement of these traits a priority for tomato breeders. The main objective of the study was to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with the tomato fruit shape and size. The use of elite breeding materials in the genetic mapping studies will facilitate the detection of genetic loci of direct relevance to breeders. We performed QTL analysis in an intra-specific population of tomato developed from a cross between two elite breeding lines NC 30P × NC-22L-1(2008) consisting of 110 recombinant inbred lines (RIL). The precision software Tomato Analyzer (TA) was used to measure fruit morphology attributes associated with fruit shape and size traits. Data were retrospectively collected of 15,375 eyes having cataract surgery and in-the-bag implantation of hydrophobic acrylic monofocal IOLs at the Ophthalmology Unit of Kymenlaakso Central Hospital, Kotka, Finland between the years 2007 and 2016. The cumulative probability of NdYAG capsulotomy was calculated by Kaplan-Meier estimates, and potential risk factors were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. The 5-year cumulative probability of NdYAG capsulotomy after cataract surgery was 27.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 22.9-32.6%) for low-diopter (5-16.5 D) IOLs, 14.6% (13.8-15.5%) for mid-diopter (17-24.5 D) IOLs, and 13.6% (11.7-15.6%) for high-diopter (25-30 D) IOLs. A multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that low-diopter IOLs (HR 1.76; 95% CI 1.38-2.25; p less then 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of NdYAG capsulotomy compared to mid-diopter IOLs over the follow-up period after accounting for other predictors. Real-world evidence shows that low-diopter IOLs are associated with significantly higher risk of NdYAG capsulotomy within five years following implantation. Estimation should help in evaluating the risks of cataract surgery in myopic eyes.

  • Slow growing stationary phase bacteria are often tolerant to multiple stressors and antimicrobials. Here, we show that the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus develops a non-specific tolerance towards oxidative stress during the stationary phase, which is mediated by the nucleotide second messenger (p)ppGpp. The (p)ppGpp0 mutant was highly susceptible to HOCl stress during the stationary phase. Transcriptome analysis of the (p)ppGpp0 mutant revealed an increased expression of the PerR, SigB, QsrR, CtsR and HrcA regulons during the stationary phase, indicating an oxidative stress response. The (p)ppGpp0 mutant showed a slight oxidative shift in the bacillithiol (BSH) redox potential (EBSH) and an impaired H2O2 detoxification due to higher endogenous ROS levels. The increased ROS levels in the (p)ppGpp0 mutant were shown to be caused by higher respiratory chain activity and elevated total and free iron levels. Consistent with these results, N-acetyl cysteine and the iron-chelator dipyridyl improved the growth and survival of the (p)ppGpp0 mutant under oxidative stress. Elevated free iron levels caused 8 to 31-fold increased transcription of Fe-storage proteins ferritin (ftnA) and miniferritin (dps) in the (p)ppGpp0 mutant, while Fur-regulated uptake systems for iron, heme or siderophores (efeOBU, isdABCDEFG, sirABC and sstADBCD) were repressed. Finally, the susceptibility of the (p)ppGpp0 mutant towards the bactericidal action of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and tetracycline was abrogated with N-acetyl cysteine and dipyridyl. The physicochemical properties and exploitation of a large number of new nanostructured materials such as carbon nanotubes, nano-silica, graphene/graphene oxide, metal nanoparticles, magnetic nanostructures, metal-organic frameworks, and hybrid nanoflowers as a host matrix to constitute robust lipases-based nanobiocatalytic systems are discussed.

  • Retained medullary cord (RMC) is thought to be a product of arrested secondary neurulation during the regression phase. A cord-like structure with a caudal non-functional part ends at the cul-de-sac. If the arrest occurs at the cavitation phase of secondary neurulation, the medullary cord has a cystic portion making "RMC of cystic type."

    We report a case of a 4-month-old girl who had a low-lying conus with an extradural-looking dorsal cyst. Preoperative diagnosis was RMC with a lumbosacral extradural cyst such as an arachnoid cyst. At surgery, we found that the extradural cyst was an extension of dural sac with the caudal portion of the cystic RMC inside. The RMC was untethered and the dural sac was reconstructed. The histopathologic examination revealed findings compatible with cystic RMC attached to the cul-de-sac.

In recent years, the health problem caused by S. aureus contaminated food has become a global health problem. S. aureus can express various pathogenic factors, mainly used for adhesion, colonization, invasion and infection of the host. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection of virulence genes in S. aureus is necessary to prevent outbreaks caused by this pathogen. PCR is a useful tool for rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of major toxin genes in S. aureus, including sea, seb, sec, see, pvl and tsst, by using a PCR plate. Of the 13 strains tested, 12 (92.3%) were found to be positive for one or more toxin genes. This study realized the one-step detection of main toxin factors in S. aureus.Glycosylation affects the properties of biologics; thus regulatory bodies classified it as critical quality attribute and force biopharma industry to capture and control it throughout all phases, from R&D till end of product lifetime. The shift from originators to biosimilars further increases importance and extent of glycoanalysis, which thus increases the need for technology platforms enabling reliable high-throughput and in-depth glycan analysis. In this chapter, we will first summarize on established glycoanalytical methods based on liquid chromatography focusing on hydrophilic interaction chromatography, capillary electrophoresis focusing on multiplexed capillary gel electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry focusing on matrix-assisted laser desorption; we will then highlight two emerging technologies based on porous graphitized carbon liquid chromatography and on ion-mobility mass spectrometry as both are highly promising tools to deliver an additional level of information for in-depth glycan analysis; additionally we elaborate on the advantages and challenges of different glycoanalytical technologies and their complementarity; finally, we briefly review applications thereof to biopharmaceutical products. This chapter provides an overview of current state-of-the-art analytical approaches for glycan characterization of biopharmaceuticals that can be employed to capture glycoprotein heterogeneity in a biopharmaceutical context.
    To describe the use of tramadol and other analgesics in Denmark focusing on the impact of media attention (June and December 2017) and regulatory actions (September 2017 and January 2018) on the use of tramadol.

    Using nationwide registries, we identified all adults who filled a prescription for tramadol and other analgesics from 2014 to 2019. We described incidence rates, prevalence proportions, and total use of tramadol and other analgesics over time. We also described switching between analgesics, treatment duration, skewness in drug use, and doctor-shopping.

    From early 2017 until the end of 2019, total tramadol use decreased markedly while the use of morphine and oxycodone decreased slightly. The quarterly prevalence of tramadol use decreased from 32/1000 individuals in 2014 to 18/1000 at the end of 2019, dropping mainly at the time of media attention. Lignin is one of the most important secondary metabolites that play vital functions in plant growth and development. However, little is known about the relationship between shading and xylogenesis in tea plant. To investigate the effects of shading on lignin accumulation in tea plants, 'Longjing 43' was treated with no shading (S0), 40% (S1) and 80% (S2) shading treatments, respectively. The leaf area and lignin content of tea plant leaves decreased under shading treatments (especially S2). The anatomical characteristics showed that lignin is mainly distributed in the xylem of tea leaves. Promoter analysis indicated that the genes involved in lignin pathway contain several light recognition elements. The transcript abundances of 12 lignin-associated genes were altered under shading treatments. Correlation analysis indicated that most genes showed strong positive correlation with lignin content, and CsPAL, Cs4CL, CsF5H, and CsLAC exhibited significant positively correlation under 40% and 80% shading treatments.

The shift from originators to biosimilars further increases importance and extent of glycoanalysis, which thus increases the need for technology platforms enabling reliable high-throughput and in-depth glycan analysis. In this chapter, we will first summarize on established glycoanalytical methods based on liquid chromatography focusing on hydrophilic interaction chromatography, capillary electrophoresis focusing on multiplexed capillary gel electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry focusing on matrix-assisted laser desorption; we will then highlight two emerging technologies based on porous graphitized carbon liquid chromatography and on ion-mobility mass spectrometry as both are highly promising tools to deliver an additional level of information for in-depth glycan analysis; additionally we elaborate on the advantages and challenges of different glycoanalytical technologies and their complementarity; finally, we briefly review applications thereof to biopharmaceutical products. This chapter provides an overview of current state-of-the-art analytical approaches for glycan characterization of biopharmaceuticals that can be employed to capture glycoprotein heterogeneity in a biopharmaceutical context. To describe the use of tramadol and other analgesics in Denmark focusing on the impact of media attention (June and December 2017) and regulatory actions (September 2017 and January 2018) on the use of tramadol. Using nationwide registries, we identified all adults who filled a prescription for tramadol and other analgesics from 2014 to 2019. We described incidence rates, prevalence proportions, and total use of tramadol and other analgesics over time. We also described switching between analgesics, treatment duration, skewness in drug use, and doctor-shopping. From early 2017 until the end of 2019, total tramadol use decreased markedly while the use of morphine and oxycodone decreased slightly. The quarterly prevalence of tramadol use decreased from 32/1000 individuals in 2014 to 18/1000 at the end of 2019, dropping mainly at the time of media attention. Lignin is one of the most important secondary metabolites that play vital functions in plant growth and development. However, little is known about the relationship between shading and xylogenesis in tea plant. To investigate the effects of shading on lignin accumulation in tea plants, 'Longjing 43' was treated with no shading (S0), 40% (S1) and 80% (S2) shading treatments, respectively. The leaf area and lignin content of tea plant leaves decreased under shading treatments (especially S2). The anatomical characteristics showed that lignin is mainly distributed in the xylem of tea leaves. Promoter analysis indicated that the genes involved in lignin pathway contain several light recognition elements. The transcript abundances of 12 lignin-associated genes were altered under shading treatments. Correlation analysis indicated that most genes showed strong positive correlation with lignin content, and CsPAL, Cs4CL, CsF5H, and CsLAC exhibited significant positively correlation under 40% and 80% shading treatments.
