    Overall medians and intervals for unit "A" were 28 (9-45) pre-intervention and 34 (11-51) pos-intervention, with before-after difference p>0.05; for unit "B", values were 32 (12-50) pre-intervention, 61 (36-82) pos-intervention, and before-after difference p≤0.05.     To analyze the intake of macronutrients and its relationship with age and sex in higher education students.

    A cross-sectional study was carried out with 218 higher education students, aged between 18 and 30 years. A validated and reliable instrument was used to measure macronutrient consumption.

    Regarding the intake of macronutrients, a statistical difference by sex was observed in favor of men (p>0.05), except for the consumption of proteins in students older than 25 years. In the group under 20 years of age, men showed better protein intake. Finally, in students between 20 and 25 years, the consumption of macronutrients is similar among men and women.

  • Time to initial treatment is important in any response to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The purpose of this paper was to quantify the time delay for providing initial EMS treatments supplemented by comparison with those of other EMS systems conducting clinical trials.

    Data were collected between 1/1/16-2/15/19. Dispatched, EMS-worked, adult OHCA cases occurring before EMS arrival were included and compared with published treatment time data. Response time and time-to-treatment intervals were profiled in both groups. Time intervals were calculated by subtracting the following timepoints from 9-1-1 call receipt ambulance in route; at curb; patient contact; first defibrillation; first epinephrine; and first antiarrhythmic.

    342 subjects met study inclusion/exclusion. Mean time intervals (min [95%CI]) from 9-1-1 call receipt to the following EMS endpoints were dispatch 0.1 [0.05-0.2]; at curb 5.0 [4.5, 5.5]; at patient 6.7 [6.1, 7.2];, first defibrillation initially shockable 11.7 [10.1, 13.3]; firsroviding treatments quickly enough to optimize clinical outcomes. Further regulatory change/research are needed to determine whether OHCA outcome can be improved by novel changes such as enhancing bystander effectiveness through drone-delivered drugs/devices & real-time dispatcher direction on their use.
    This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) and assess the predictive effect of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on acute SAP.

The patients' history of chronic diseases was assessed, including history of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, chronic lung disease, and current smoking status. The clinical characteristics of all studied cases were recorded, including the initial stroke type (cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, indwelling nasogastric tubes, stroke-associated pneumonia within 7days of hospitalization, and length of hospitalization. The study also recorded the laboratory testing data, including fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glycosylated hemoglobin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRPnd specificity were 3.745, 0.891, and 0.727, respectively.

    Since the beginning of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States, there have been concerns about the potential impact of the pandemic on persons with opioid use disorder. Shelter-in-place (SIP) orders, which aimed to reduce the spread and scope of the virus, likely also impacted this patient population. This study aims to assess the role of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of opioid overdose before and after a SIP order.

    A retrospective review of the incidence of opioid overdoses in an urban three-hospital system was conducted. Comparisons were made between the first 100days of a city-wide SIP order during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 100days during the COVID-19 pandemic preceding the SIP order (Pre-SIP). Differences in observed incidence and expected incidence during the SIP period were evaluated using a Fisher's Exact test.

    Total patient visits decreased 22% from 46,078 during the Pre-SIP period to 35,971 during the SIP period. A total of 1551 opioid overdoses were evaluated during the SIP period, compared to 1665 opioid overdoses during the Pre-SIP period, consistent with a 6.8% decline. A Fisher's Exact Test demonstrated a p<0.0001, with a corresponding Odds Ratio of 1.20 with a 95% confidence interval (1.12;1.29).

Alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and the Val66Met (rs6562) polymorphism are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease, but few studies have explored its influence on the associations of age of onset, cognitive function and clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. The clinical symptoms of a total of 573 patients with chronic schizophrenia were assessed by using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Cognitive performance was assessed by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The serum BDNF level and Val66Met polymorphism were measured after the assessment. Our results showed the following (1) patients with an earlier age of onset exhibited more negative symptoms and cognitive deficits, as well as lower levels of serum BDNF; (2) negative symptoms and cognitive function showed negative and positive correlations with age of onset, respectively, and worse cognitive function was associated with a high level of negative symptoms and a low level of serum BDNF; and (3) the moderated mediation analyses indicated that negative symptoms partially mediated the relationship between age of onset and cognitive deficits, which was moderated by serum BDNF. The mediating effect of negative symptoms exhibited a Met allele dose-dependent tendency. These results indicate that age of onset, cognitive function, and clinical symptoms of schizophrenia exhibit different relationships under different serum BDNF levels and BDNF Val66met polymorphisms.

The dysfunctional liver cannot eliminate circulatory ammonia, so its plasma and brain levels rise sharply. Astrocytes, the only cells that are responsible for ammonia detoxification in the brain, are dynamic cells with unique phenotypic properties that enable them to respond to small changes in their environment. Any pathological changes in astrocytes may cause neurological disturbances such as HE. Astrocyte swelling is the leading cause of cerebral edema, which may cause brain herniation and death by increasing intracranial pressure. Various factors may have a role in astrocyte swelling. However, the exact molecular mechanism of astrocyte swelling is not fully understood. This article discusses the possible mechanisms of astrocyte swelling which related to hyperammonia, including the possible roles of molecules like glutamine, lactate, aquaporin-4 water channel, 18 KDa translocator protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, alanine, glutathione, toll-like receptor 4, epidermal growth factor receptor, glutamate, and manganese, as well as inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial permeability transition, ATP depletion, and astrocyte senescence. All these agents and factors may be targeted in therapeutic approaches to HE.Recently, we have defined atomic polarizability, a Conceptual Density Functional Theory (CDFT)-based reactivity descriptor, through an empirical method. Though the method is empirical, it is competent enough to meet the criteria of periodic descriptors and exhibit relativistic effect. Since the atomic data are very accurate, we have applied them to determine molecular polarizability. Molecular polarizability is an electronic parameter and has an impact on chemical-biological interactions. Thus, it plays a pivotal role in explaining such interactions through Structure Activity Relationships (SAR). In the present work, we have explored the application of polarizability in the real field through investigation of chemical-biological interactions in terms of molecular polarizability. A Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) model is constructed to account for electronic effects owing to polarizability in ligand-substrate interactions. The study involves the prediction of various biological activities in terms of minimum block concentration, relative biological response, inhibitory growth concentration or binding affinity. Superior results are presented for the predicted and observed activities which support the accuracy of the proposed polarizability-QSAR model. Further, the results are considered from a biological viewpoint in order to understand the mechanism of interactions. The study is performed to explore the efficacy of the computational model based on newly proposed polarizability and not to establish the finest QSAR. For future studies, it is suggested that the descriptor polarizability should be contrasted with the use of other drug-like descriptors.Five 1,4-bisphenylhydrazone derivatives (1-5) were successfully synthesized and evaluated for their antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. The antioxidant activity has been carried out using DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC and superoxide radical scavenging methods. All the compounds showed a very good antioxidant activity compared to that of the standards used. Compound 1 was found to be the best antioxidant agent with IC50 values lower or comparable to that of the standards.   • Tested with 1k base-pair double-stranded DNA, the SaS nanopore enabled sensing at microsecond speed with a signal-to-noise ratio of 21, compared to 11 from a SiS nanopore. This SaS nanopore presents a manufacturable nanoelectronic platform feasible for high-speed and low-noise sensing of a variety of biomolecules.Selective fabrication of metallic nanostructures at the spotting area is required to increase the signal-to-background noise ratio (SBR) of the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) substrate. As a simple and cost-effective fabrication method for MEF substrate with high SBR, a glancing angle deposition (GLAD) process of Ag material on the UV-imprinted micropost array (50 μm in height, 300 μm in diameter, and 600 μm in pitch) was proposed to selectively fabricate Ag nanorods on the top of micropost structure (spotting area). Ag nanorod formation at the bottom of the micropost decreased as the deposition angle in Ag GLAD increased. A deposition angle of 89° and deposition thickness of 500 nm were selected as the optimum GLAD conditions to maximize the SBR. The optimum Ag nanorods on micropost array (AgNMPA) MEF substrate provided 71-fold fluorescence signal enhancement and 25-times higher SBR than the bare glass substrate. It also provided 7-times higher SBR than the Ag nanorod MEF substrate, which has a similar Ag nanorod structure but is not selectively formed. The detection limit of AgNMPA was 16- and 4-times lower than that of the amine-functionalized glass substrate and commercial epoxy slide, respectively. Although the fluorescence signal of AgNMPA was similar to that of Ag nanorod substrate, the detection limit was 2-times lower because of the low signal standard deviation caused by the low background noise and clear spot shape.We aimed to examine the prevalence of psychotic experiences (PEs) in children with familial high risk of schizophrenia (FHR-SZ) or bipolar disorder (FHR-BP) and, in exploratory analyses, to examine the possible associations between PEs and mental disorders as well as level of functioning. A cohort of seven-year-old children with FHR-SZ (N = 199), FHR-BP (N = 118) and controls (N = 196) was recruited through Danish nationwide registers. Lifetime PEs were assessed through interviews using the psychosis section of the 'Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version' (K-SADS-PL). Lifetime DSM-IV diagnoses were ascertained through K-SADS-PL and the level of functioning of the children through 'Children's Global Assessment Scale'. Both children with FHR-SZ (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.4-6.2, p = 0.005) and FHR-BP (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.3-6.7, p = 0.011) had an increased risk of having experienced "severe" PEs compared with controls. In the overall cohort PEs were associated with any lifetime mental disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety disorders and a lower level of functioning. The findings of a higher proportion of high risk children reporting PEs could represent an early manifestation of later more severe psychopathology or simply an unspecific transitory symptom.     The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of an adapted Turkish version of the Scoliosis Japanese Questionnaire- 27 (SJ- 27).

    Translation and retranslation of the English version of the SJ- 27 was conducted, and all steps of the cross-cultural adaptation process were performed. The Turkish version of the SJ- 27, the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS- 22) questionnaire and the Short Form-36 (SF- 36) were performed to 139 patients with AIS. Reliability was assessed using the test-retest method (Pearson's correlation coefficient); internal consistency was analyzed using Cronbach's alpha. Validity was assessed by correlating the SJ- 27 with the SRS- 22 questionnaire and SF- 36.

    The mean Cobb angles were 23.2±8.3° and 19±5.9° for thoracic and lumbar regions, respectively. The SJ- 27 showed excellent test/retest reliability with an Intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.99. Internal consistency of the SJ- 27 was found to be very good (Cronbach's alpha=0.991). The SJ- 27 demonstrated very good construct validity with the SRS- 22 total score (r=0.61). The similar domains of the SJ- 27 and SF- 36 questionnaire was correlated also in the study.

    Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model, digital and manual searches were conducted in February 2020 in the database of CENTRAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE. Thirteen parameters relating to the release and biological effects of BPA were identified and analysed.

    Thirty-one non-randomized clinical trials were included. In general, the level of evidence was low, and the risk of bias ranged from moderate to high. Furthermore, although at different concentrations, most of in vitro and in vivo studies found BPA release from orthodontic adhesives. The lack of standardized protocols and the clinical and methodological heterogeneity of the studies prevented a valid interpretation of the actual results. Concerning the possible toxicity of BPA, no conclusive scientific evidence could be drawn, but it seems that orthodontic biomaterials containing BPA have potential adverse biological effects in humans.

The optimum Ag nanorods on micropost array (AgNMPA) MEF substrate provided 71-fold fluorescence signal enhancement and 25-times higher SBR than the bare glass substrate. It also provided 7-times higher SBR than the Ag nanorod MEF substrate, which has a similar Ag nanorod structure but is not selectively formed. The detection limit of AgNMPA was 16- and 4-times lower than that of the amine-functionalized glass substrate and commercial epoxy slide, respectively. Although the fluorescence signal of AgNMPA was similar to that of Ag nanorod substrate, the detection limit was 2-times lower because of the low signal standard deviation caused by the low background noise and clear spot shape.We aimed to examine the prevalence of psychotic experiences (PEs) in children with familial high risk of schizophrenia (FHR-SZ) or bipolar disorder (FHR-BP) and, in exploratory analyses, to examine the possible associations between PEs and mental disorders as well as level of functioning. A cohort of seven-year-old children with FHR-SZ (N = 199), FHR-BP (N = 118) and controls (N = 196) was recruited through Danish nationwide registers. Lifetime PEs were assessed through interviews using the psychosis section of the 'Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version' (K-SADS-PL). Lifetime DSM-IV diagnoses were ascertained through K-SADS-PL and the level of functioning of the children through 'Children's Global Assessment Scale'. Both children with FHR-SZ (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.4-6.2, p = 0.005) and FHR-BP (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.3-6.7, p = 0.011) had an increased risk of having experienced "severe" PEs compared with controls. In the overall cohort PEs were associated with any lifetime mental disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety disorders and a lower level of functioning. The objectives of this systematic review of the literature are to search for BPA release from biomaterials used in orthodontics and to highlight their possible impact on human health. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model, digital and manual searches were conducted in February 2020 in the database of CENTRAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE. Thirteen parameters relating to the release and biological effects of BPA were identified and analysed. Thirty-one non-randomized clinical trials were included. In general, the level of evidence was low, and the risk of bias ranged from moderate to high. Furthermore, although at different concentrations, most of in vitro and in vivo studies found BPA release from orthodontic adhesives. The lack of standardized protocols and the clinical and methodological heterogeneity of the studies prevented a valid interpretation of the actual results. Here, we report a trivalent lanthanide halide neodymium (III) chloride (NdCl3)-doped perovskite NCs prepared with a post-synthetic room temperature treatment for efficient blue light-emitting devices (LEDs). The Nd 3d and Cl 2p core peaks were observed in the NdCl3-doped NCs, which allowed for simultaneous doping of Nd3+ and Cl- into the pristine CsPbBr3 NCs. The NdCl3-doped NCs exhibited blue emission at a peak wavelength of 478 nm with a high PLQY of 97% in solution. We found that the Nd3+ cation incorporated into the NCs more effectively suppressed nonradiative recombination compared with common halide anion exchange from temperature dependence of optical properties. Notably, the depth of tissue penetration of the nanosensor enables Hcy detection of the liver and kidney through in vivo imaging without damage. With good swellability, the PPhen framework here has successfully supported and dispersed seven types of metal particles via a newly developed swelling-impregnation method, including Ru, Pt, Au, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu.     Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a sight-threatening condition that needs regular examinations and remedies. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the most common used examination to evaluate the structure and thickness of the macula, but the software in the OCT machine does not tell the clinicians whether DME exists directly. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to aid in diagnosis generation and therapy selection. We thus develop a smartphone-based offline AI system that provides diagnostic suggestions and medical strategies through analyzing OCT images from diabetic patients at the risk of developing DME.

    DME patients receiving treatments in 2017 at Taipei Veterans General Hospital were included in this study. We retrospectively collected the OCT images of these patients from January 2008 to July 2018. We established the AI model based on MobileNet architecture to classify the OCT images conditions. The confusion matrix has been applied to present the performance of the trained AI model.

    Based on the convolutional neural network with the MobileNet model, our AI system achieved a high DME diagnostic accuracy of 90.02%, which is comparable to other AI systems such as InceptionV3 and VGG16. We further developed a mobile-application based on this AI model available at https//aicl.ddns.net/DME.apk.

    We successful integrated an AI model into the mobile device to provide an offline method to provide the diagnosis for quickly screening the risk of developing DME. With the offline property, our model could help those nonophthalmological healthcare providers in offshore islands or underdeveloped countries.

    The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on surgical care in Germany. The reduction in the bed and the operating room capacity may have lead to considerable delays in urgent and semi-elective surgical interventions. In addition to the risk of worsening patient care, we anticipate severe financial damage to the clinics in 2020 and beyond. National and supranational planning is urgently needed to ensure the surgical care of patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
    In 2018, Uganda started only 65% of persons with incident tuberculosis on treatment. Pretreatment loss to follow up is an important contributor to suboptimal treatment coverage. We aimed to describe the patient and health facility-level characteristics associated with pretreatment loss to follow up among patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis at public health facilities in Uganda.

    At ten public health facilities, laboratory register data was used to identify patients aged ≥ 15 years who had a positive Xpert®MTB/RIF test. Initiation on TB treatment was ascertained using the clinical register. Factors associated with not being initiated on TB treatment within two weeks of diagnosis were examined using a multilevel logistic regression model accounting for clustering by health facility.

    From January to June 2018, 510 patients (61.2% male and 31.5% HIV co-infected) were diagnosed with tuberculosis. One hundred (19.6%) were not initiated on TB treatment within 2 weeks of diagnosis. Not having a phone number recorded in the clinic registers (aOR 7.93, 95%CI 3.93-13.05); being HIV-infected (aOR 1.83; 95% CI 1.09-3.26) and receiving care from a high volume health facility performing more than 12 Xpert tests per day (aOR 4.37, 95%CI 1.69-11.29) and were significantly associated with pretreatment loss to follow up.

The aim of the review is to bring together current knowledge to guide researchers and commissioners towards potentially cost-effective strategies to promote or support breastfeeding.

    Searches were conducted of electronic databases, including MEDLINE and Scopus, for economic evaluations relevant to breastfeeding, published up to August 2019. Records were screened against pre-specified inclusion/exclusion criteria and quality was assessed using a published checklist. Costs reported in included studies underwent currency conversion and inflation to a single year and currency so that they could be compared.     Nine oral disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) have been approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States. Few studies have examined self-reported quality of life (QoL) and functional status outcomes among patients who switch to oral medications from injectable MS therapies. This study compares self-reported QoL and disability status between participants switching from injectable to oral DMTs, to those who stay on injectable DMTs continuously for the same time period.

    Longitudinal data were assessed from relapsing MS participants in the Pacific Northwest MS Registry completing a minimum of two surveys between 2012 and 2018 with a maximum of 36 months between surveys. Stayers were defined as those who remained on injectable DMTs continuously from Time 1 to Time 2; switchers were those who switched from injectable to either fingolimod, teriflunomide or dimethyl fumarate during the same time interval. Outcomes of interest were physical and psychological QoL, measured by the Multiple Ses in QoL or self-reported disability status compared to those remaining on injectable DMT continuously in the same time period.

    Status epilepticus (SE) is a common neurological emergency condition that especially affects the elderly and old population. Older people with SE frequently have non-convulsive SE (NCSE) and are also at special risk of suffering a poor outcome. The application of benzodiazepines fails to control SE in about one third of the cases. For benzodiazepine refractory SE (BRSE) in elderly, there is little evidence that would justify the choice of one of the commonly used antiepileptic drugs. The present study aims to generate evidence for the treatment of BRSE in this age group.

    To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of Mitomycin C-augmented trabeculectomy in a mixed, tertiary-referral, pediatric glaucoma cohort.

    Retrospective consecutive review of all children (37 eyes) undergoing Mitomycin C-augmented trabeculectomy by a single surgeon between 2008 and 2016. Seventeen eyes (45.9%) had primary congenital glaucoma, and 20 eyes (54.1%) had secondary glaucoma. The median age at surgery was 11 months (range, 2 to 146). The mean follow-up was 69.2±4.7 months (range, 3.5 to 107.9).

    Overall, trabeculectomy was successful in 80.6% of eyes at 12 months, 60.5% at 3 years, and 57.5% at 5 years. 45.9% cases (17 eyes) required further laser or surgery for uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) and were therefore deemed as failures. Following stabilization of her intraocular pressures with medical management, she ultimately underwent cataract extraction with iridectomies and goniosynechiolysis in both eyes.

    To report the incidence and outcomes of eyes developing postoperative suprachoroidal hemorrhage (PSCH) after undergoing Aurolab Aqueous Drainage Implant (AADI) surgery for adult and pediatric refractory glaucomas.

    In this retrospective series, case files of all patients who underwent AADI between May 2012 and December 2019 were retrieved from an electronic database. A PSCH was defined as the presence of hemorrhagic choroidal detachment, confirmed by ultrasound B scan, occurring in a closed system in the postoperative period.

    Of the 986 eyes that underwent AADI during the study period, 7 (0.7%), developed PSCH (95% CI=0.3-1.6%). There were no differences in the preoperative parameters between those with and without PSCH. Ofnly about half these eyes.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of cervicofacial reconstruction in patients with soft tissue defects and bone flap and reconstruction plate exposure with the upper trapezius myocutaneous flap. Fifteen oncologic patients with prior surgery and radiotherapy developed soft tissue dehiscence with bone and osteosynthesis material exposure. All patients had either a frozen neck or a vessel-depleted neck. The soft tissue defects were reconstructed, the osteosynthesis material was removed and the bone flap exposure was covered in all patients. One patient developed a seroma and 1 patient reported wound dehiscence. In terms of esthetic results, 6 patients referred a good esthetic result, whereas 8 patients referred a fair result and 1 patient a poor result. Two patients with prior radical neck dissection reported a poor functional result in the ipsilateral shoulder, previously to secondary reconstruction.

  • Ambient air pollution, in the form of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), poses serious population health risks. We estimate cross-national longitudinal models to test whether the negative relationship between life expectancy and PM2.5 concentration is larger in nations with higher levels of income inequality. The dependent variable is average life expectancy at birth, and the focal predictor variables include PM2.5 concentration, income inequality, and the two-way interaction between them. We also estimate the average marginal effects of PM2.5 concentration from low to high values of income inequality, and the predicted values of life expectancy from low to high values of PM2.5 concentration and income inequality. Results indicate that the negative relationship between life expectancy and PM2.5 concentration is larger in nations with higher levels of income inequality, and the reductions in predicted life expectancy are substantial when both PM2.5 concentration and income inequality are high. We suggest that the theoretical principles of Power, Proximity, and Physiology help explain our findings. This study underscores the importance in considering the multiplicative impacts of environmental conditions and socioeconomic factors in the modeling of population health.The lakes along the Yangtze River are important source of pollutants that ultimately flow from the river into the East China Sea. Bioremediation is a green technology used to treat polluted water in lakes along the Yangtze River. Life cycle assessment and a comprehensive water quality index are used to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of constructed wetlands (CWs), ecological floating beds (EFBs), and combined ecological floating beds (CEFBs). The results showed that the raw material acquisition, construction, and operation of the CWs, EFBs, and CEFBs accounted for 24.1%, 35.3%, and 40.6%, respectively, of the total environmental impact. The acquisition of raw materials to construct the bioremediation system accounted for 51.6% of the total environmental impact. Among the nine impact categories considered, the system's global warming potential was the largest. Among the three stages of the project (raw material acquisition, construction, and operation), construction had the largest impact on eutrophication (the eutrophic potential of the construction stage was the largest). Furthermore, the operation of the project reduced the human eco-toxicity potential. The evaluation of the water quality before and after implementing the project revealed that CEFBs purified the water more effectively than CWs and EFBs did, particularly with respect to the removal of the total phosphorus.Coastal lakes (CL) act as limnetic-β-oligohaline systems located on non-tidal coastlines in fresh and salt water mixing zone. Owing to considerable terrestrial nutrient input and a high autochthonous productivity CLs release greenhouse gases (GHG) to the ambient atmosphere, however, neither emission from the system was assessed nor controls on the emission were recognized so far. In this study we attempted to quantify diffusive emissions of CH4, CO2 and N2O from CLs based on data collected from seven lakes located on a south coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland. Lake water samples were collected with quarterly resolution along salinity, water depth and wind fetch gradients. From our data it emerged that the concentrations of GHGs were determined by temperature. CH4 showed dependence on salinity, lake water depth and wind fetch. N2O was controlled by dissolved O2 and NO3- and CO2 was largely related to wind fetch. It also appeared that concentrations of N2O and CO2 were influenced by terrestrial nutrient input. The mean fluxes of CH4, CO2 and N2O for the whole system were 21.7 mg·m-2·d-1, 12.7 g·m-2·d-1 and 0.74 mg·m-2·d-1, respectively which was equivalent to 7.9 g CH4·m-2·y-1, 4.6 kg CO2·m-2·y-1 and 269 mg N2O·m-2·y-1. CH4 and N2O were released throughout the year and CO2 was predominantly emitted during winter. We showed that diffusive emissions of the GHGs showed relationships to the surface area of the lakes as well as the ratio of catchment area to lake area (CA/LA). Comparing with active/passive satellite-based and AERONET-based observations, the MERRA-2 data provide both the spatio-temporal distribution and evolution process of the dust aerosol more accurately. This study also found that the entire Indian-Gangetic Plain (IGP), Southern India, the Bay of Bengal, and even the TP were influenced by the dust event. The synoptic analysis showed that the dust storm was caused jointly by an upper-level jet stream (ULJS), an upper trough and the subtropical high.
