  • In this contribution, we studied the OC-C bond in carbon suboxide and related allene compounds using the valence bond method. The nature of this bond has been the subject of debate, whether it is a regular, electron sharing bond or a dative bond. We compared the nature of this bond in carbon suboxide with the gold-CO bond in Au(CO)2+, which is a typical dative bond, and we studied its charge-shift bond character. We found that the C-CO bond in carbon suboxide is unique in the sense that it cannot be assigned as either a dative or electron sharing bond, but it is an admixture of electron sharing and dative components, together with a high contribution of ionic character. These findings provide a clear basis for distinguishing the commonly found dative bonds between ligands and transition metals and the present case of what may be described as coordinative bonding to carbon.Thiolation/cyclization of homopropargylic tosylamides allowed the selective synthesis of 3-thiolated pyrroles and pyrrolines controlled by solvents. In general, light responsive nano DDSs are bicomponent and constructed using two ingredients, namely a nanocarrier and a phototrigger. The synthesis of these bicomponent nano DDSs requires multiple steps, which limits their applications. Hence, we have reported single component light responsive nano DDSs using fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONPs) which acted both as a nanocarrier and a phototrigger. This feature article provides an overview of recently developed light responsive single component FONPs and their applications in the regulated release of anticancer drugs, gasotransmitters, antibacterial agents, and pesticides, and also as efficient PDT agents. We have summarised the synthesis, characterisation, and photophysical, photochemical, and in vitro behaviours of these light responsive FONPs. In addition, we also discussed the advantages of using FONPs as a nano DDS for cellular studies like excellent biocompatibility, efficient cellular internalisation, real time monitoring of the drug release ability inside the cells, and enhanced cytotoxicity due to regulated release of bioactive molecules inside the cells.Treatment of patients with COVID-19 using convalescent plasma from recently recovered patients has been shown to be safe, but the time course of change in clinical status following plasma transfusion in relation to baseline disease severity has not yet been described. We analyzed short, descriptive daily reports of patient status in 7,180 hospitalized recipients of COVID-19 convalescent plasma in the Mayo Clinic Expanded Access Program. We assessed, from the day following transfusion, whether the patient was categorized by his or her physician as better, worse or unchanged compared to the day before, and whether, on the reporting day, the patient received mechanical ventilation, was in the ICU, had died or had been discharged. Most patients improved following transfusion, but clinical improvement was most notable in mild to moderately ill patients. Patients classified as severely ill upon enrollment improved, but not as rapidly, while patients classified as critically ill/end-stage and patients on ventilators showed worsening of disease status even after treatment with convalescent plasma. Patients age 80 and over showed little or no clinical improvement following transfusion. Clinical status at enrollment and age appear to be the primary factors in determining the therapeutic effectiveness of COVID-19 convalescent plasma among hospitalized patients.Patients with coronavirus disease 19 ( COVID-19 ) are at high risk for fibrin-based occlusion of vascular beds of all sizes. Although endothelial cell activation has regularly been described as part of the COVID-19 thrombo-inflammatory storm, the upstream mediators of this activation have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we began by pursuing the hypothesis that circulating factors such as neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) remnants, D-dimer, or C-reactive protein might predict the COVID-19 serum samples (n=118) that most robustly activated cultured endothelial cells. Indeed, we found modest correlations between serum NET remnants (cell-free DNA, myeloperoxidase-DNA complexes, citrullinated histone H3) and upregulation of surface E-selectin, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 on endothelial cells. However, a more robust predictor of the ability of COVID-19 serum to activate endothelial cells was the presence of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies, specifically anticardiolipin IgG and IgM and anti-phosphatidlyserine/prothrombin (anti-PS/PT) IgG and IgM. Depletion of total IgG from anticardiolipin-high and anti-PS/PT-high samples markedly restrained upregulation of E-selectin, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1. At the same time, supplementation of control serum with patient IgG was sufficient to trigger endothelial cell activation. These data are the first to reveal that patient antibodies are a driver of endothelial cell activation and add important context regarding thrombo-inflammatory effects of COVID-19 autoantibodies in severe COVID-19.The current COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 19) pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, disproportionally affects the elderly and people with comorbidities like obesity and associated type 2 diabetes mellitus.   • The displacement hypothesis of eight-node cubic elements is selected as the shape function of digital volume correlation (DVC), and the Newton-Raphson iterative method is selected to solve the partial differential equation to measure the displacement field. In order to ensure that the DVC algorithm is usable under the large rotation condition, the spherical shell template matching technique is presented to perform the integer-voxel displacement searching for nodes, which can provide the optimal initial values for the Newton-Raphson iterative method due to the rotation and translation invariance of the spherical shell template. Simulated volume images are used to verify the reliability of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed DVC method can be used to measure the deformation with an arbitrary rigid body rotation angle. This work is expected to be useful to measure deformation with large rotation of the internal structure of materials.A full-color display consisting of red and green photoluminescence cadmium-free quantum dots (QDs) as the color conversion material and excited by a 68×68 blue micro-LED flip chip array mounted on an active-matrix driving board was completed in this study. The QD photoresist (QDPR) lithography technology was reported in detail, and it has been proven to be a stable process route. The suitable thickness of 12±1µm of the QDPR and black matrix was proposed to reduce the light cross talk between different sub-pixels. The thickness of the common color filter of 1-2 µm was made successfully between the quantum dot film and the cover glass, which can greatly reduce the leakage of blue backlight and decrease the quantum dots excitation by the ambient light, as well as improve the color gamut and color purity of the display panel. In addition, the high red and green light conversion efficiency reaches up to 78.1% and 296.5%, respectively, and the screen display can reach 98.8% NTSC on the CIE 1931 chromaticity. Representative RGB monochromatic pictures were displayed successfully and ≤0.04 viewing angle deviation of the display was measured precisely.Time-of-flight (ToF) cameras can acquire the distance between the sensor and objects with high frame rates, offering bright prospects for ToF cameras in many applications. Low-resolution and depth errors limit the accuracy of ToF cameras, however. In this paper, we present a flexible accuracy improvement method for depth compensation and feature points position correction of ToF cameras. First, a distance-error model of each pixel in the depth image is established to model sinusoidal waves of ToF cameras and compensate for the measured depth data. Second, a more accurate feature point position is estimated with the aid of a high-resolution camera. Experiments evaluate the proposed method, and the result shows the root mean square error is reduced from 4.38 mm to 3.57 mm.We carried out a fast processing investigation based on a graphics processing unit (GPU) for a distributed acoustic sensor using a linear frequency modulation pulse. The moving window cross-correlation calculations are realized on the GPU, which makes use of parallel computing. We analyzed the effect of the thread number in a block on the GPU streaming multiprocessor utilization efficiency and then compared the acceleration under different calculation scales. By maximizing the streaming multiprocessor utilization efficiency and large calculation scale, a maximum acceleration ratio of 86.01 was obtained.Optical coherence tomography (OCT) image enhancement is a challenging task because speckle reduction and contrast enhancement need to be addressed simultaneously and effectively. We present a refined Retinex model for guidance in improving the performance of enhancing OCT images accompanied by speckle noise; a physical explanation is provided. Based on this model, we establish two sequential optimization functions in the logarithmic domain for speckle reduction and contrast enhancement, respectively. Compared to spatial phase shift shearography, the advantages of this system include its simple structure, relatively high light efficiency, and good phase map quality. Digital shearography is a fast, practical, non-contact, whole-field, and anti-turbulent optical approach to non-destructive testing (NDT) and strain measurement. Because the shearing direction determines the strain direction being measured, tests using multiple shearing directions are sometimes required to obtain strain in different directions and detect all defects. Various setups, based on the spatial phase shift method, have been proposed to solve the issue. While some of these setups perform well, they may also introduce new problems, such as poor phase map quality and low light efficiency. We present a sequential dual shearing shearographic system with good phase map quality and high light efficiency. Due to the SLM's high-speed response, capable of reaching hundreds of hertz, SLM-based dual shearing direction shearography allows for fast temporal phase shifting and shearing direction switching while providing very good phase map quality. Unlike the spatial phase shift method, which has low light efficiency due to its need for a small aperture to enable a relatively large speckle size to cover multiple pixels, the proposed method is based on a fast temporal phase shift and does not have this limitation. In addition, SLM can provide a programmable and adjustable shearing method in any direction and distance, which is beneficial for strain measurements and NDT requiring strain measurements in different directions using a small and precise shearing distance. We describe in detail the theory derivation and non-destructive testing application results for the SLM-based dual shearing direction shearography system.

In this study, our goal was to develop a defined, clinically applicable protocol for direct differentiation of CEnCs from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). To produce feeder-free hPSC-CEnCs, we used small molecule induction with transforming growth factor (TGF) beta receptor inhibitor SB431542, GSK-3-specific inhibitor CHIR99021 and retinoic acid to guide differentiation through the neural crest and periocular mesenchyme (POM). We set out to investigate a rare form of keratinopathic ichthyosis caused by KRT1 mutation with two different optical imaging methods. We used a newly developed light emitting diode (LED) based device to analyze autofluorescence signal at 405 nm excitation and diffuse reflectance at 526 nm in vivo. Mean autofluorescence intensity of the hyperkeratotic palmar skin was markedly higher in comparison to the healthy control (162.35 vs. 51.14). To further assess the skin status, we examined samples from affected skin areas ex vivo by nonlinear optical microscopy. Two-photon excited fluorescence and second-harmonic generation can visualize epidermal keratin and dermal collagen, respectively. We were able to visualize the structure of the epidermis and other skin changes caused by abnormal keratin formation. The primary endpoint of CRT response rate at 12months is defined by a clinical composite score of all-cause mortality, heart failure events, New York Heart Association Class, and quality of life as assessed by a patient global assessment instrument. A subgroup composed of the first 103 consecutive European subjects implanted with an NG4 device will have left ventricular multisite pacing feature enabled at any time during the initial 12months of follow-up. The primary endpoint for this sub-analysis will be the NG4 PG-related complication-free rate at 36months.

A survey containing fixed-choice selections and open-ended questions was sent to persons with cancer and other chronic diseases who had been seen within a large national private health system. Between 20% and 25% of participants had difficulty obtaining health care information and/or felt overwhelmed with managing their condition. Coping, managing symptoms, and making treatment decisions were areas of need in both patients and caregivers. Preferences for receiving information were diverse.     We performed an up-to-date systematic review of human epidemiological studies on the association between such compounds and thyroid cancer incidence or mortality.

    The literature research (1999-March 2020) identified four relevant articles. Considering also reports from the previous IARC review, this systematic review considered seven reports (five distinct studies) on antithyroid drugs and two on ethylenethiourea. As for antithyroid drugs, three reports based on different follow-ups gave results from a cohort of patients treated for hyperthyroidism in 1946-1964. In the earlier report, thyroid cancer incidence was higher in patients primarily patients receiving thionamides only. Two case-control studies did not find any association with the use of antithyroid drugs. As for ethylenethiourea, no thyroid cancer cases were found in a historical cohort of 1929 workers occupationally exposed in a 15-year period and no association with proxies of mancozeb exposure (a fungicide whose main metabolite is ethylenethiourea) was detected in a cohort of >236 000 farmers.

  • Since the outbreak of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in December 2019, the Chinese government has implemented effective epidemic prevention measures. To provide useful information for governments to manage this public health crisis, we conducted an online survey among Chinese general population from February 24 to 28, 2020. In this study, we examined the impact of epidemic information and rumors on public's worries and attitude toward prevention measures during the outbreak of COVID-19. A total of 853 valid questionnaires (641 women, 75.1%) were collected from 24 provincial regions in China. Most respondents' ages ranged from 18 to 60 (833 participants, 97.66%). A mediation model was built to analyze the influence of epidemic information and rumors on worries and attitude. The results showed that the amount of epidemic information positively predicted public's worries, which in turn predicted a supportive attitude toward the prevention measures. Worries partially mediated the relationship between the amount of epidemic information and the supportive attitude. The amount of rumors negatively predicted the supportive attitude. The results of this study implied the importance of timely and credible information providing to evoke a certain level of worry and promote public cooperation, and the necessary attention to refute and resist rumors for effective risk communication in a public health crisis.Camptothetin (CPT) is a quinoline alkaloid originally isolated from the Chinese tree, Camptotheca acuminata Decne. CPT was found to have anticancerous and antiviral properties. Derivatives of natural CPT, including topothecan and irinotecan are used clinically to treat a variety of cancers. Apart from Camptotheca acuminata Decne, CPT production was also found in the perennial plant Ophiorrhiza mungos. In this study we attempted the immobilization of the tissue culture grown callus of Ophiorrhiza mungos for the continuous production of a higher concentration of CPT. As evident from previous studies about the antiviral effects of CPT, we wanted to bioinformatically analyze the binding potential of CPT towards two important proteins of SARS-CoV-2, protease (Mpro) and RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Further docking analysis of the CPT against the exterior spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 was also done to determine their potential interaction. The immobilized callus of Ophiorrhiza mungos produced CPT at a concentration of 420 µg/l by the end of 12 days of growth. The HPLC analysis was done to determine the purity of the CPT synthesized by the immobilization technique. The bioinformatic analysis revealed a higher binding efficiency of CPT and its derivatives, toptecan and irinotecan against Mpro and RdRp. The docking analysis of CPT against the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 showed hydrogen bonding with the amino acids at K466 with a bond distance of 2.56A° and K355 with a bond distance of 2.40A°. This finding was of particular importance that other compounds including hydroxychloroquine sulphate, lopinavir and ivermectin could bind with the spike protein only by weak Vander wall bonds and no hydrogen bond formation was noticed. Our studies hence evaluate the efficiency of CPT against SARS-CoV-2, by potentially blocking the interaction of the spike glycoprotein with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor found on host cells.Pain at the autologous bone graft site from the posterior-superior iliac spine (PSIS) is severe enough to affect the postoperative ambulation. In this report, we describe a case of SMN gene unrelated SMA and myoclonic epilepsy, supported by electrophysiological and neuropathological evidences.Objective  We used local-based enteral formula for post-stroke patients to see its effects on the nutritional status. Materials and Methods  This is an experimental research with a pre- and post-test study design in post-stroke patients. Participants underwent clinical and laboratory examinations to assess their nutritional status before and after the enteral nutrition supplementation. The enteral formula preparation, containing arrowroot powder, cork fish, tempeh (fermented soybeans), nondairy creamer, and pumpkin, was performed in a nationally standardized Food Processing Technology Laboratory in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The enteral formula was given twice a day for 3 consecutive weeks in addition to the patients' daily meal. Statistical Analysis  Nutritional indices before and after enteral nutrition supplementation were analyzed using t-test . All statistical analyses were at 5% significance level. In this report, we describe a case of SMN gene unrelated SMA and myoclonic epilepsy, supported by electrophysiological and neuropathological evidences.Objective  We used local-based enteral formula for post-stroke patients to see its effects on the nutritional status. Materials and Methods  This is an experimental research with a pre- and post-test study design in post-stroke patients. Participants underwent clinical and laboratory examinations to assess their nutritional status before and after the enteral nutrition supplementation. The enteral formula preparation, containing arrowroot powder, cork fish, tempeh (fermented soybeans), nondairy creamer, and pumpkin, was performed in a nationally standardized Food Processing Technology Laboratory in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The enteral formula was given twice a day for 3 consecutive weeks in addition to the patients' daily meal. Statistical Analysis  Nutritional indices before and after enteral nutrition supplementation were analyzed using t-test . All statistical analyses were at 5% significance level. Results  Of the 22 post-stroke patients, we used the cutoff point of National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale ≥3 and Barthel Index less then 90 to represent dependency.

    The Epic Deterioration Index (EDI) is a proprietary prediction model implemented in over 100 U.S. hospitals that was widely used to support medical decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic. The EDI has not been independently evaluated, and other proprietary models have been shown to be biased against vulnerable populations.

  • Wide-necked bifurcation aneurysms remain a challenge for endovascular surgeons. Dual-stent-assisted coiling techniques have been defined to treat bifurcation aneurysms with a complex neck morphology. However, there are still concerns about the safety of dual-stenting procedures. Stent plus balloon-assisted coiling is a recently described endovascular technique that enables the coiling of wide-necked complex bifurcation aneurysms by implanting only a single stent.

    To investigate the feasibility, efficacy, safety, and durability of this technique for the treatment of wide-necked bifurcation aneurysms.

    A retrospective review was performed of patients with wide-necked intracranial bifurcation aneurysms treated with stent plus balloon-assisted coiling. The initial and follow-up clinical and angiographic outcomes were assessed. Preprocedural and follow-up clinical statuses were assessed using modified Rankin scale.

We detailed the prevalence of frailty by sub-group and assessed the comparability between frailty groups for the categorical variable of achieving 300-meters in 6MWT (community ambulation threshold), and the continuous variable of total distance in 6MWT before and after 16 weeks of intervention.

    Of the 210 participants, 9% were non-frail, 59% were pre-frail, and 32% were frail. The odds of a non-frail participant achieving the 300-meter threshold were 14.4 (95% CI 2.4-87.6) times the odds of a frail participant, while a pre-frail participant's odds were 6.1 [95% CI 1.3-28.4] times after controlling for treatment group and baseline walking distance. The non-frail participants had an increase of 92.1 m in from baseline to 16 weeks, the pre-frail had a 50.8 m increase, and the frail group had the smallest increase of 36.6 m (p<0.001 for all).

Both vegetative and reproductive phenotypes were rescued by transgenes encoding either ACA1, 2, or 7, suggesting that all three isoforms are biochemically redundant. Lesions were suppressed by expression of a transgene encoding NahG, an enzyme that degrades salicylic acid (SA). Triple KO mutants showed elevated mRNA expression for two SA-inducible marker genes, Pathogenesis-related1 (PR1) and PR2.     Overall, 4718 patients from the multicentre study OBSERVANT was divided into derivation (n = 3539) and validation (n = 1179) cohorts. A stepwise logistic regression procedure and a criterion based on Akaike information criteria index were used to select variables associated with 30-day mortality. The performance of the regression model was compared with that of European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II.

    At 30 days, 90 (2.54%) and 35 (2.97%) patients died in the development and validation data sets, respectively. Age, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, concomitant coronary revascularization, frailty stratified according to the Geriatric Status Scale, urgent procedure and estimated glomerular filtration rate were independent predictors of 30-day mortality. The estimated OBS AVR score showed higher disdel seems to contribute to an improved predictive ability over the EuroSCORE II. The OBS AVR risk score showed a significant association with long-term mortality.

    Hemocultures of 150 neonates with possible early onset neonatal sepsis (pEOS) were obtained at the Hôpital Provincial Général de Référence de Bukavu (HPGRB, Bukavu, DRC). The newborns with pEOS received an empirical first-line antimicrobial treatment (ampicillin, cefotaxime and gentamicin), based on the synopsis of international guidelines for the management of EOS which are in line with WHO recommendations. Isolates were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization - time of flight mass spectrophotometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Antibiotic resistance was assessed using the disk diffusion method.

    A total of 50 strains was obtained from 48 patients and identified. The three most prevalent species were Enterobacter cloacae complex (42%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (18%) and Serratia marcescens (12%).
