  • Background With approximately one pathologist for one million people compared to ratios of approximately 1 to 25 000 in the United States and United Kingdom, there is a severe shortage of pathologists in **** of Africa. The situation is particularly severe in Zambia, where, in 2009, the ratio was 1 to 1.4 million. Objective To address this, a postgraduate Master of Medicine (MMed) training programme was launched in Lusaka in 2011. Methods The process and most significant challenges and lessons learned were documented, as they may be of value to other countries facing similar challenges. Results Since 2011, four Zambian pathologists have graduated, doubling the number of indigenous pathologists in the country. Currently 10 students are in training. The most significant problem was issues arising from the split responsibilities of the Ministries of Health and of Education and the most important lesson learned was the crucial need for broad local ownership and commitment. Conclusion Successfully addressing the shortage of local pathologists by creating country-specific, postgraduate MMed training programmes, even in situations of restricted resources, is feasible. As new data emerge, the spectrum of initial presenting symptoms has expanded from fever, cough, and dyspnea to gastrointestinal and other symptoms in both pregnant and non-pregnant patients. Case A 36-year-old woman, G4P2, at 33 weeks of gestation presented very early in the COVID-19 course with four days of cough and fever, without recent travel or known exposure. She appeared well, with stable vital signs, and was sent home to self-quarantine after a specimen for COVID-19 testing was collected. Two days later, she presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Conclusion To date, no cases of human pancreatitis have been identified as related to a COVID-19 infection, although multiple other gastrointestinal symptoms have been described. Third, responses to questions about the impact of COVID-19 introduced to the assessment from 19 March 2020, and reports from treating therapists were examined. Results There was an 89% increase in website visits and a 90% increase in telephone calls to the clinic in the early COVID-19 period compared to the comparison period. Herein, an ultrathin poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)poly(styrene sulfonate) (UT-PEDOTPSS) hole transporter layer is prepared by a water stripping method, and the UT-PEDOTPSS can enhance ηc and LEE simultaneously in Pero-LEDs, mostly due to the improved carrier mobility, more matched energy level alignment, and reduced photon loss. Importantly, the colony cells are capable of cross-tissue multilineage (e.g., endothelial, cardiac, neural, and osteogenic) differentiation, which is not observed for "CSCs" isolated using other contemporary approaches. Further studies demonstrate the colony cells are highly tumorigenic, metastatic, and drug resistant. These data show the colony cells obtained with the bioinspired one-cell-culture approach are truly CSCs. However, the light yield of these perovskite NCs is relatively low because of the strong self-absorption that reduces the light out-coupling efficiency. Here, NCs with self-trapped excitons emission are demonstrated to be sensitive, reabsorption-free scintillators. Highly luminescent and stable Cs3Cu2I5 NCs with a photoluminescence quantum yields of 73.7%, which is a new record for blue emission lead-free perovskite or perovskite-like NCs, is produced with the assistance of InI3. The PL peak of the Cs3Cu2I5 NCs locates at 445 nm that matches with the response peak of a silicon photomultiplier.

  • In multivariate analysis, age was an independent risk factor of MCI aggravating, while attention (****) was independent protective factor for MCI progression.Conclusions Age and worsening attention but not depression in MCI patients were independently associated with the progression of dementia in a 6-year follow-up period.As a by-product during flour production, wheat bran is mainly used as raw material for fodder or fermentation. In the present work, wheat bran was extruded with different moisture conditions and the consequently chemical component, absorption capacity, and antioxidant activity of treated wheat bran were analyzed. Results showed that extrusion decreased the particle size and crystallinity of wheat bran, but increased the soluble dietary fiber content of which from 3.08% to 11.78%. Meanwhile, water holding capacity, oil holding capacity for peanut oil and lard, and swelling capacity of WB-W-G-Na reached 5.67 g/g, 3.34 g/g, 3.58 g/g and 4.3 mL/g, respectively. Moreover, DPPH radical scavenging activity of WB-W-G-Na increased from 6.8% to 18.4% and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity increased from 5.3% to 15.9%. Overall, this work provides an excellent pretreatment method for increasing the functional activities of wheat bran in the food industry.The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of domestic violence in ever-married women in India and analyze the relationship between domestic violence and use of female sterilization as contraception. We analyzed data from the National Family Health Survey 2005-2006 (NFHS3). The Domestic Violence Module of the survey included abuse experiences and reproductive health outcomes of ever-married women aged 15 to 49 years (n = 69,704). The main outcome of interest was female sterilization and domestic violence experience was the main independent variable. Covariates in our multivariate regression models were guided by the socioecological model for domestic abuse. We estimated a reference linear probability model for the dichotomous outcome. We also employed an instrumental variables procedure to strengthen causal inference under such potential sources of bias as measurement error in reporting domestic violence and omitted variables. The reference model showed an increase of 2.1 percentage points (p less then .001) in the probability of female sterilization associated with exposure to domestic violence. After correcting the estimate for the measurement error and omitted variable bias, we found that domestic violence was associated with an increase in female sterilization by 6.4 percentage points (p less then .001), which is 18% higher than the rate of sterilization among non-victims. In conclusion, our findings imply that domestic violence may lead abuse victims to opt for female sterilization as contraception. Domestic violence is a significant obstacle to efficient contraceptive use. Programs directed toward violence prevention should work conjointly with family planning programs in India.Purpose Cerebral venous sinus stenosis (CVSS) is easily neglected in clinical setting due to its nonspecific symptoms. In patients with cerebral arterial stenosis (CAS), the symptoms caused by CVSS are often mistakenly thought of being attributed to CAS. In this case, we aimed to highlight the clinical manifestations and treatment strategies of CVSS comorbid with CAS.Materials and methods We present an 83-year-old female who complained a series of nonspecific and non-focal neurological deficits such as tinnitus, head noise, dizziness, etc. She was initially diagnosed as CAS and underwent anti-CAS medication orally for over 2 years, whereas her symptoms were still aggravating.Results Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) displayed severe stenoses at bilateral sigmoid-transverse sinus conjunctions, and thus, the patient underwent intravenous stenting finally. Her aforementioned symptoms significantly attenuated after venous stenting and even disappeared gradually at 3-month, 6-month and 1-year follow-up.Conclusions This paper revealed that cerebral venous outflow disturbance should not be overlooked when the nonspecific and non-focal neurological deficits could not be explained by cerebral artery disease.   • Flow diversion of acutely ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is controversial due to high treatment-related complication rates and a lack of supporting evidence. We present clinical and radiological results of the largest series to date.

    This is a nationwide retrospective study of acutely ruptured IAs treated with flow diverters (FDs). The primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at the last available follow-up time. Secondary outcomes were treatment-related complications and the aneurysm occlusion rate.

    110 patients (64 females; mean age 55.7 years; range 12-82 years) with acutely ruptured IAs were treated with FDs between 2012 and 2020 in five centers. 70 acutely ruptured IAs (64%) were located in anterior circulation, and 47 acutely ruptured IAs (43%) were blister-like. A favorable functional outcome (mRS 0-2) was seen in 73% of patients (74/102). Treatment-related complications were seen in 45% of patients (n=49). Rebleeding was observed in 3 patients (3%). The data from radiological follow-ups were available for 80% of patients (n=88), and complete occlusion was seen in 90% of aneurysms (79/88). The data from clinical follow-ups were available for 93% of patients (n=102). The overall mortality rate was 18% (18/102).

    Approximately one-third of patients with ischemic stroke treated with endovascular treatment do not recover to functional independence despite rapid and successful recanalization. We aimed to quantify the importance of predictors of poor functional outcome despite successful reperfusion.

    We analyzed patients from the MR CLEAN Registry between March 2014 and November 2017 with successful reperfusion (extended Thrombolysis In Cerebral Infarction ≥2B). First, predictors were selected based on expert opinion and were clustered according to acquisition over time (ie, baseline patient factors, imaging factors, treatment factors, and postprocedural factors). Second, several models were constructed to predict 90-day functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale (mRS)).     In spring 2020, a novel hyperinflammatory process associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) was described. The long-term impact remains unknown. We report longitudinal outcomes from a New York interdisciplinary follow-up program.

    All children <21 years of age, admitted to NewYork-Presbyterian with MIS-C in 2020, were included. Children were followed at 1 to 4 weeks, 1 to 4 months, and 4 to 9 months postdischarge.

    In total, 45 children were admitted with MIS-C. The median time to last follow-up was 5.8 months (interquartile range 1.3-6.7). Of those admitted, 76% required intensive care and 64% required vasopressors and/or inotropes. On admission, patients exhibited significant nonspecific inflammation, generalized lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Soluble interleukin (IL) IL-2R, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, IL-18, and C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 9 were elevated. A total of 80% (

    = 20) had moderate-severe echocardiographic abnormalities including coronary abnormalities (9% had a

    Flow diversion of acutely ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is controversial due to high treatment-related complication rates and a lack of supporting evidence. We present clinical and radiological results of the largest series to date. This is a nationwide retrospective study of acutely ruptured IAs treated with flow diverters (FDs). The primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at the last available follow-up time. Secondary outcomes were treatment-related complications and the aneurysm occlusion rate. 110 patients (64 females; mean age 55.7 years; range 12-82 years) with acutely ruptured IAs were treated with FDs between 2012 and 2020 in five centers. 70 acutely ruptured IAs (64%) were located in anterior circulation, and 47 acutely ruptured IAs (43%) were blister-like. A favorable functional outcome (mRS 0-2) was seen in 73% of patients (74/102). Treatment-related complications were seen in 45% of patients (n=49). Rebleeding was observed in 3 patients (3%). The data from radiological follow-ups were available for 80% of patients (n=88), and complete occlusion was seen in 90% of aneurysms (79/88).   • Background Data regarding the successful ablation site of idiopathic outflow tract (OT) ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in the modern era of mapping and ablation are limited. Methods and results Over a 4-year period, a total of 309 patients underwent detailed activation mapping of OT VAs including the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT), the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and the aortic cusps (AC), and the coronary venous system. 244 cases were successfully ablated at the index procedure (78.9%). The successful ablation site was more frequently located at the LVOT/ACs (51.6%) followed by RVOT (36.2%). In particular, the ACs was the predominant successful ablation site of idiopathic OT VAs (46.7%). An epicardial site of origin was predictor of ablation failure (p less then 0.05). Conclusions The ACs is the predominant successful ablation site of idiopathic OT VAs. The traditional method of primary mouse cardiomyocyte isolation was used as the control group to assess the extraction efficiency of cardiomyocytes by the two-step method, and the purity and viability of cardiomyocytes were evaluated by immunofluorescence staining and autonomous beating analysis, respectively. Results Compared with the control method, the two-step method enabled acquisition of more cells from mouse hearts (1.28 ± 0.11 × 106vs 0.59 ± 0.15 × 106 cells/heart), and the resulting cells exhibited higher adherence rates and cell purity (93.25 ± 1.69% vs 73.62 ± 9.76%) after 48 h of culture. Moreover, the viability of cardiomyocytes was also evidently higher in the two-step group than in the control group (124.67 ± 10.50 vs 88.50 ± 6.61 beats/min). Patient performance was compared with that of published age-matched controls. Quality of life metrics included scores on the SRS-22 questionnaire, SF-36, and Morse Fall Scale. Correlations between postural stability and radiographic measurements were performed. Results ASD patients demonstrated significantly lower SOT scores (P≤0.03) in 5 of 6 conditions tested, and greater latency of limb movement during backward translation (P=0.04) compared with controls. Lower SOT scores were associated with a history of falls. ASD patients who self-reported falling in the previous 6 months, when compared to nonfallers, demonstrated significantly lower SOT scores (P=0.04) and significantly lower SRS-22 self-image subscores (P=0.003). Thoracic kyphosis and mediolateral sway (predictor of falls) were positively correlated in the eyes open and eyes closed conditions (P≤0.04). Oxygen plasma treatment is used extensively to modify cell culture substrates, and there is evidence that patterned rather than planar surfaces have a positive effect on proliferation and differentiation. In this study, we compared the effect of standard tissue culture plastic (TCP), oxygen plasma treated (OPC), and nanopatterned surfaces (NPS) on early differentiation and functionality of HepaRG™-P cells. Since NPS were oxygen plasma treated we initially compared the effect of TCP and OPC to enable comparison between all 3 culture surfaces using OPC as control to asses if patterning could further enhance early differentiation and functionality. The results show that cells grown on OPC substrate exhibited earlier differentiation, proliferation and function of HepaRG™-P's compared to TCP in the absence of DMSO. Culturing these cells on OPC with the addition of NPS did not confer any additional advantage. The normalization of black tea consumption among the British public was not just a work of marketing or branding but a work of resolving uncertainty about what tannins were at a material, biophysical level. As this uncertainty was resolved scientifically, tea was materialized not as a singular, unified product but as an active chemical assemblage.

In particular, Newland highlighted the simplicity of his arrangements; Meyer was more careful about the quality of data that gave rise to his system of elements; and Mendeleev sought to make his system more complete. By shedding light as to how the values of simplicity, completeness and carefulness guided the development of early periodic systems, this paper contributes to a broader understanding of how values influence science.Fully differentiated HepaRG™ cells are the hepatic cell line of choice for in vitro work in toxicology and drug trials. They are derived from a hepatoblast-like progenitor (HepaRG™-P) that differentiate into a co-culture of hepatocyte-like and cholangiocyte-like cells in the presence of differentiation-inducing chemical dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). This process requires 2 weeks of proliferation and differentiation and can be time consuming and costly. Identifying a chemical free method to push HepaRG™-Ps towards a mature lineage would save both time and money. It has been shown, that tissue culture substrates play an important role in the development and maturity of a cell line, and this is particularly important for progenitor cells, which retain some form of plasticity. Oxygen plasma treatment is used extensively to modify cell culture substrates, and there is evidence that patterned rather than planar surfaces have a positive effect on proliferation and differentiation. In this study, we compared the effect of standard tissue culture plastic (TCP), oxygen plasma treated (OPC), and nanopatterned surfaces (NPS) on early differentiation and functionality of HepaRG™-P cells. Since NPS were oxygen plasma treated we initially compared the effect of TCP and OPC to enable comparison between all 3 culture surfaces using OPC as control to asses if patterning could further enhance early differentiation and functionality. The results show that cells grown on OPC substrate exhibited earlier differentiation, proliferation and function of HepaRG™-P's compared to TCP in the absence of DMSO. Culturing these cells on OPC with the addition of NPS did not confer any additional advantage. In conclusion, OPC surface appeared to enhance hepatic differentiation and functionality and could replace traditional methods of differentiating HepaRG-P cells into fully differentiated and functional HepaRGs earlier than traditional methods.Early-onset hypertonia is characteristic of developmental neuromotor disorders, including cerebral palsy (CP). We assessed NMTF in an ex vivo TA muscle nerve preparation from spa and wild-type (WT) mice by comparing forces elicited by nerve versus muscle stimulation. TA muscle innervation ratio was assessed by counting the number of muscle fibers and dividing by the number of TA motor neurons. Muscle fiber cross-sectional areas were also assessed in the TA muscle. We observed that NMTF was immediately present in spa mice, increased with repetitive stimulation, and associated with increased innervation ratio. These changes were concomitant with reduced TA muscle fiber cross-sectional area in spa mice compared with WT.   • A heterogeneous landscape composed of high, medium, and low burn severity patches within a forest altered by large wildfires provided habitat for different bat species, but water density and range in elevation were more important for predicting bat habitat use than fire severity in this arid landscape. More than one spatial scale, representing local to landscape levels, should be considered in managing habitat for bats. In arid areas, such as the western United States, maintaining reliable water sources is important for bats. Managing these factors at multiple spatial scales will benefit bat species with different wing morphologies, echolocation call types, and habitat selections.PURPOSE To provide a quantitative clinical-regulatory insight into the status of FDA orphan drug designations for compounds intended to treat lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs). METHODS Assessment of the drug pipeline through analysis of the FDA database for orphan drug designations with descriptive and comparative statistics. RESULTS Between 1983 and 2019, 124 orphan drug designations were granted by the FDA for compounds intended to treat 28 lysosomal storage diseases. Orphan drug designations focused on Gaucher disease (N = 16), Pompe disease (N = 16), Fabry disease (N = 10), MPS II (N = 10), MPS I (N = 9), and MPS IIIA (N = 9), and included enzyme replacement therapies, gene therapies, and small molecules, and others. Twenty-three orphan drugs were approved for the treatment of 11 LSDs. Gaucher disease (N = 6), cystinosis (N = 5), Pompe disease (N = 3), and Fabry disease (N = 2) had multiple approvals, CLN2, LAL-D, MPS I, II, IVA, VI, and VII one approval each. This is an increase of nine more approved drugs and four more treatable LSDs (CLN2, MPS VII, LAL-D, and MPS IVA) since 2013. Mean time between orphan drug designation and FDA approval was 89.7 SD 55.00 (range 8-203, N = 23) months. CONCLUSIONS The drug development pipeline for LSDs is growing and evolving, with increased focus on diverse small-molecule targets and gene therapy. CLN2 was the first and only LSD with an approved therapy directly targeted to the brain. Newly approved products included "me-too"-enzymes and innovative compounds such as the first pharmacological chaperone for the treatment of Fabry disease.Objective of this study was to better understand the use of performance data for evidence-based decision-making by managers in hospitals and other healthcare organisations in Europe in 2019. In order to explore why, what and how performance data is collected, reported and used, we conducted a cross-sectional study based on a self-reported online questionnaire and a follow-up interactive workshop. Our study population were participants of a pan-European professional Exchange Programme and their hosts (n = 125), mostly mid-level hospital managers. We found that a substantial amount of performance data is collected and reported, but could be utilised better for decision-making purposes. Motivation to collect and report performance data is equally internal and external, for improvement as well as for accountability purposes. Benchmarking between organisations is recognised as being important but is still underused. A plethora of different data sources are used, but more should be done on conceptualising, collecting, reporting and using patient-reported data. Managers working for privately owned organisations reported greater use of performance data than those working for public ones. Strategic levels of management use performance data more for justifying their decisions, while managers on operational and clinical levels use it more for day-to-day decision-making. Our study showed that, despite the substantial and increasing use of performance data for evidence-based management, there is room and need to further explore and expand its role in strategic decision-making and supporting a shift in healthcare from organisational accountability towards the model of learning organisations.Mollusc shells are produced from calcified skeletons and have excellent mechanical properties. Shell matrix proteins (SMPs) have important functions in shell formation. A 16.6 kDa whirlin-like protein (WLP) with a PDZ domain was identified in the shell of Mytilus coruscus as a novel SMP. In this study, the expression, function, and location of WLP were analysed. The WLP gene was highly expressed and specifically located in the adductor muscle and mantle. The expression of recombinant WLP (rWLP) was associated with morphological change, polymorphic change, binding ability, and crystallization rate inhibition of the calcium carbonate crystals in vitro. In addition, an anti-rWLP antibody was prepared, and the results from immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence analyses revealed the specific location of the WLP in the mantle, adductor muscle, and myostracum layer of the shell, suggesting multiple functions for WLP in biomineralization, muscle-shell attachment, and muscle attraction. Furthermore, results from a pull-down analysis revealed 10 protein partners of WLP in the shell matrices and a possible network of interacting WLPs in the shell. In addition, in this study, one of the WLP partners, actin, was confirmed to have the ability to bind WLP. An orthopedic examination was performed in all cats and radiographs were obtained to confirm the disease. GRFs, including peak vertical force (PFz), vertical impulse (IFz), time to PFz, and temporospatial parameters, including step length, paw contact area, and stance phase duration, were calculated. We also calculated the symmetry index (SI) in the forelimbs and h weight to the other three legs without favoring either the contralateral or the diagonal limb.BACKGROUND Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have seen rapid increases in injection drug use since 2008. In Uganda, the Global Sate of Harm report and studies conducted by Makerere University Crane Surveys have estimated HIV prevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID) at approximately 17%. The objective of the research was to document injection and other drug-related risks among people who use drugs in Uganda to develop comprehensive HIV/HCV prevention interventions. METHODS Between August and September 2018, we conducted qualitative interviews among male and female people who use drugs. Interview topics included the availability and accessibility of clean syringes, injection risks, overdose, sexual-risk behaviors, and the availability and accessibility of harm reduction and drug treatment services. RESULTS Participants reported several injection-related risks including sharing and reusing syringes, pooling and mixing drugs in the same container, measuring drugs using syringes, getting prefilled injections from dealers, being injected by other people who inject drugs, and using contaminated water or blood to dilute drugs. Participants reported a scarcity of harm reduction services, although a few appear to have participated in the syringe exchange pilot conducted by the Uganda Harm Reduction Network (UHRN). Even fewer reported knowing organizations that helped people who use drugs abstain from or reduce their use. Medication assisted therapy (MAT) and naloxone to reverse overdoses are not currently available. CONCLUSIONS Comprehensive prevention and treatment services are needed in Uganda and should include expanded syringe exchange programs, social network HIV testing, HCV testing, provision of naloxone and MAT, and linkage to and retention in HIV care.BACKGROUND Little is known about differences in the size and morphology of the right and left human tali. All eligible tali were systematically measured with a Vernier caliper and three-dimensional laser scanner, which provided data for further analysis regarding the talar morphometric geometric profiles. Data were calculated to demonstrate differences between the right and left talar profiles using a matched-pair method, including the general size of the talus. RESULTS The average talar length was 53.5 mm, the average talar dome height was 31.2 mm, and the average talar body width was 41.3 mm. The average anterior trochlear width, middle trochlear width, posterior trochlear width, and trochlear length were 31.8, 31.2, 28.3, and 30.7 mm, respectively. Eleven matched pairs of intact tali were eligible for the matched-pair study. Paired t-tests showed significant differences in the talar dome height (P = 0.019), middle trochlear width (P = 0.027), and posterior trochlear width (P = 0.016) between the right and left tali. However, there were no significant differences in the surface area or volume between the right and left tali. CONCLUSION Significant differences in the morphometric profile were found between the right and left matched pairs of tali. This basic information indicates that the profile of the contralateral talus may not be used as a single reference to reconstruct or duplicate the talus of interest in certain conditions such as talar prosthesis implantation or customized total ankle replacement.BACKGROUND Hepatitis B (HB) is a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to life-threatening conditions including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Sub-Saharan Africa including Ghana is an HBV endemic area and an estimated 5%- 10% of the population in the region is infected. Research on the knowledge and vaccination status of hepatitis B in rural communities in Ghana is lacking. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study proposed were to assess the HBV knowledge, risk of HBV infection, and vaccination status of high school students in two rural districts of the Northern region on Ghana. METHODS A cross-sectional study of a random sample of 426 students from two senior high schools in the Nanumba North and South districts of the Northern region of Ghana on hepatitis B knowledge and vaccination status was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and present data on demographic and knowledge variables.

Interview topics included the availability and accessibility of clean syringes, injection risks, overdose, sexual-risk behaviors, and the availability and accessibility of harm reduction and drug treatment services. RESULTS Participants reported several injection-related risks including sharing and reusing syringes, pooling and mixing drugs in the same container, measuring drugs using syringes, getting prefilled injections from dealers, being injected by other people who inject drugs, and using contaminated water or blood to dilute drugs. Participants reported a scarcity of harm reduction services, although a few appear to have participated in the syringe exchange pilot conducted by the Uganda Harm Reduction Network (UHRN). Even fewer reported knowing organizations that helped people who use drugs abstain from or reduce their use. Medication assisted therapy (MAT) and naloxone to reverse overdoses are not currently available. CONCLUSIONS Comprehensive prevention and treatment services are needed in Uganda and should include expanded syringe exchange programs, social network HIV testing, HCV testing, provision of naloxone and MAT, and linkage to and retention in HIV care.BACKGROUND Little is known about differences in the size and morphology of the right and left human tali. RESULTS The average talar length was 53.5 mm, the average talar dome height was 31.2 mm, and the average talar body width was 41.3 mm. Eleven matched pairs of intact tali were eligible for the matched-pair study. Paired t-tests showed significant differences in the talar dome height (P = 0.019), middle trochlear width (P = 0.027), and posterior trochlear width (P = 0.016) between the right and left tali. However, there were no significant differences in the surface area or volume between the right and left tali. CONCLUSION Significant differences in the morphometric profile were found between the right and left matched pairs of tali. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study proposed were to assess the HBV knowledge, risk of HBV infection, and vaccination status of high school students in two rural districts of the Northern region on Ghana. METHODS A cross-sectional study of a random sample of 426 students from two senior high schools in the Nanumba North and South districts of the Northern region of Ghana on hepatitis B knowledge and vaccination status was conducted.   • Objective This study aimed to evaluate variations in anterior condylar height (ACH) of the distal femur in varus knee osteoarthritis and evaluate the association between ACH and knee flexion. Design Computed tomography (CT) images of 171 knees (143 patients; age 73.7 ± 8.3 years; 132 females, 39 males) with symptomatic primary knee osteoarthritis and varus alignment undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty, unilateral knee arthroplasty, or high tibial osteotomy were evaluated. Several other anatomic parameters were measured on CT or radiography. The ACH and knee flexion correlation was analyzed, and factors contributing to knee flexion were determined using multivariable regression analysis. Results Medial ACH (mean, 8.1 mm; range, -2.8 to 19.9 mm) was smaller (P less then 0.001) but more variable (F = 1.8, P less then 0.001) than lateral ACH (mean, 10.7 mm; range, 3.6-18.3 mm). Medial ACH was moderately correlated with flexion (r = -0.44, 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.55 to -0.32), whereas lateral ACH was weakly correlated (r = -0.38; 95% CI, -0.50 to -0.25). On multivariable linear regression analysis of knee flexion, body mass index (B [partial regression coefficient] = -1.1), patellofemoral Kellgren-Lawrence grade (B = -4.3), medial ACH (B = -1.2), medial posterior condylar offset (B = 1.2), age (B = -0.4), and varus alignment (B = -0.6) remained significant independent variables (adjusted R2 = 0.35). The ideal therapeutic intervention for a colonic varix is still unclear. We report a 42 year-old man with 20 years of alcohol use who presented with hematochezia and abdominal distension. The patient was diagnosed with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The colonoscopy revealed a dilated and tortuous varix in the transverse colon close to the hepatic flexure with oozing blood, a communicating branch and with "red sign", evidence of acute bleeding. Endoscopic band ligation (EBL), the most useful intervention for esophageal varices, was further successfully performed to arrest the bleeding colonic varices. One month after initial treatment, the colonic varices nearly vanished and were replaced by an ulcer. It is extremely rare for colonic varices to be treated with EBL. There is only one similar case in reported literature, but it seems to be safe and effective as an intervention for EBL for acute colonic variceal bleeding. Evaluation of T2 mapping was based on the assessment of global T2 indices (T2 of the repair tissue [RT] divided by T2 of healthy reference cartilage) and zonal variation. Results Fifty-six (20 female) patients were prospectively enrolled. The mean MOCART score significantly increased from baseline to the 24-month follow-up with 88.8 (95% CI, 85.8-91.9; P less then 0.001) for all lesions combined as well as 86.8 (95% CI, 83.0-90.6) for chondral lesions and 94.1 (95% CI, 68.55-100) for osteochondral lesions.

Dupilumab demonstrated sustained improvement of disease severity, pruritus, and quality of life in our series with an increasing percentage of patients gaining EASI75 and EASI90 response during the study period. Few patients interrupted treatment resulting in a very high drug survival rate. We also confirmed the favorable safety profile of the drug with absence of serious adverse events and serious infections throughout the 48-week period. This project is also the first collaborative screening report from the Medical Research Council and AstraZeneca agreement to form the UK Centre for Lead Discovery. A cellular imaging assay was used, involving chemically controlled recruitment of activated dynein complexes to peroxisomes. Such a system has the potential to identify molecules that affect multiple aspects of dynein biology in vivo. Following optimization of key parameters, the assay was developed in a 384-well format with semiautomated liquid handling and image acquisition. Testing of more than 500,000 compounds identified both inhibitors and activators of dynein-based transport in multiple chemical series. Additional analysis indicated that many of the identified compounds do not affect the integrity of the microtubule cytoskeleton and are therefore candidates to directly target the transport machinery.The poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1) enzyme has received **** attention in the last decade due to its promising role in cancer therapeutics. One of the key findings of this study was the stronger expression of PARP-1 in proliferating cells rather than mature cells. This observation not only provides clues to the importance of PARP-1 in processes such as DNA replication and transcription in these cell types, but it also provides the basis for further investigation into the effects of its inhibition in the context of malignancy. Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is a well-established cardiovascular medicine that is also a nitric oxide donor, and can be given orally. Aims We explored the safety and potential effects of GTN in unmedicated patients with a first episode of psychosis. Methods This was a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial from December 2016 to April 2019 (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02906553). Patients received 3 × sprays of GTN or placebo for three consecutive days, and were re-assessed on Days 1, 2, 3 and 7. The primary outcome was cognition (Jumping to Conclusions task), secondary outcomes were symptoms (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)), verbal memory (Hopkins Verbal Learning task), and mood (Bond-Lader Visual Analogue Scales). Results Nineteen patients were randomised, and 13 participants were included in the analyses. Compared with placebo, GTN was well tolerated, but was not associated with significant effects on cognition, symptoms, or mood. Bayesian statistics indicate that our results were 2× more likely under the null hypothesis than the alternative hypothesis, providing anecdotal evidence that GTN does not improve psychotic symptoms. Conclusions We found no indication of an effect of GTN on symptoms of psychosis or cognition.The number of cases of aggressive prostate cancer is increasing. Methods This was a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial from December 2016 to April 2019 (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02906553). Patients received 3 × sprays of GTN or placebo for three consecutive days, and were re-assessed on Days 1, 2, 3 and 7. The primary outcome was cognition (Jumping to Conclusions task), secondary outcomes were symptoms (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)), verbal memory (Hopkins Verbal Learning task), and mood (Bond-Lader Visual Analogue Scales). Results Nineteen patients were randomised, and 13 participants were included in the analyses. Compared with placebo, GTN was well tolerated, but was not associated with significant effects on cognition, symptoms, or mood. Bayesian statistics indicate that our results were 2× more likely under the null hypothesis than the alternative hypothesis, providing anecdotal evidence that GTN does not improve psychotic symptoms. Conclusions We found no indication of an effect of GTN on symptoms of psychosis or cognition.The number of cases of aggressive prostate cancer is increasing. Differentiating between aggressive and indolent cases has resulted in increased difficulty for the physician and patient to decide on the best treatment option. Due to this challenge, efforts are underway to profile genetic risk for prostate cancer aggressiveness, which may help physicians and patients at risk for developing aggressive prostate cancer to select an appropriate treatment option. This study explores patients' interest in receiving genetic results, preference for how genetic risk information should be communicated, and willingness to share results with adult male first-degree relatives (FDRs). A nine-item survey was adapted to assess their beliefs and attitudes about genetic testing for prostate cancer aggressiveness. In addition, participants (n = 50) responded to hypothetical scenarios and questions associated with perceived importance of risk disclosure, preferences for receiving genetic risk information, and sharing of results with FDRs.
