  • The lipopolysaccharide migration patterns of both resistant and sensitive bacterial strains were also studied and compared to investigate the nature of the potential receptor of this phage on the bacterial surface. This study sheds light on the surprising diversity of lifestyles of the bacterial strains sensitive to phage T7-Ah and opens the door to the potential use of this phage against A. salmonicida infections in aquaculture.Tenofovir-based regimens as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are highly effective at preventing HIV infection. Mixed beta diversity testing demonstrated significant differences between PrEP and non-PrEP users with Bray-Curtis and unweighted UniFrac analyses (p = 0.05 and 0.049, respectively). At the genus level, there was a significant reduction in Finegoldia, along with a significant increase in Catenibacterium and Prevotella in PrEP users. Prevotella has been associated with inflammatory pathways, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease, while Catenibacterium has been associated with morbid obesity and metabolic syndrome. Overall, these results suggest that PrEP may be associated with some degree of microbiome dysbiosis, which may contribute to GI symptoms. The Phomopsis/Diaporthe strains were isolated amongst a total of 62 endophytic fungi from the aerial parts of the herbaceous perennial American plant Peperomia obtusifolia (Piperaceae) along with Fusarium, Septoria, Colletotrichum, Alternaria and Roussoella genera among others. Phomopsis/Diaporthe isolates were identified as Diaporthe infecunda (12 isolates), Diaporthe sackstoni (1 isolate), Diaporthe cf. brasiliensis (4 isolates) and Phomopsis cf. tuberivora (7 isolates). All the Phomopsis/Diaporthe strains antagonized A. rabiei strain AR2 with a mean of inhibition (% I) of 86.59 ± 1.49% in dual cultures. The metabolic characterization of the Phomopsis/Diaporthe strains showed groups in three clusters which were in agreement with the taxonomic identification. Bioautographic evaluation of organic extracts showed that those of D. cf. brasiliensis and D. infecunda were better as inhibitors. Strain Po 45 was one of the most active (cluster 1, 96.87% I), and its ethyl acetate extract inhibited A. rabiei growth in a bioautographic assay until at least 10 μg/mm applied showing a specific chromatographic band as the responsible of the A. rabiei inhibition.
    Binocular visual impairment related to unilateral idiopathic epiretinal membranes (uiERM) and its association with vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL) has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to explore binocular visual parameters (distance binocular best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), aniseikonia, stereopsis) and VR-QoL in patients with uiERM.

    We carried out a prospective single-centre cohort study. The following data were collected VR-QoL (NEI VFQ-25), distance monocular and binocular BCVA, horizontal and vertical metamorphopsia (M-charts test), horizontal and vertical aniseikonia (NAT TEST) and stereoacuity (TNO test). Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate factors influencing VR-QoL.

    Forty-six patients with uiERM and visual complaints were included. Aniseikonia was found in 40 (80%) participants. Stereoacuity was poor (above 120 s of arc) in 46 (100%) participants. Distance monocular BCVA, horizontal metamorphopsia and horizontal aniseikonia were the factors associated with VR-QoL in patients with uiERM.

    In subjects presenting uiERM, aniseikonia is frequently found and stereopsis is constantly impaired. We advocate quantitative testing of metamorphopsia and aniseikonia in addition to BCVA for the assessment of global visual function. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the effect of vitrectomy on these parameters and VR-QoL.

    With therapeutic advances, central nervous system (CNS) involvement in leukemia has become more common. Leukemic optic disc infiltration, often a clinical diagnosis, can present as an isolated finding in primary or relapsed CNS disease and therefore requires early recognition. Not previously well appreciated, we report here signs of intraocular inflammation accompanying leukemic optic disc infiltration, suggesting infectious or non-infectious uveitis as an alternative diagnosis. We describe a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) sign favoring leukemic infiltration.

    Retrospective consecutive case series of all leukemic patients with disc edema (5 patients, 6 eyes) presenting to the University of Michigan's Ocular Oncology Clinic between October 2019 and March 2020.

    We report five leukemic patients (6 eyes) who were evaluated for disc edema and vitritis and eventually diagnosed with leukemic papillopathy. All five patients initially had a bland lumbar puncture (LP), and allfour patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had no retrobulbar nerve involvement.

  • Early detection of lung cancer is of importance since it can increase patients' chances of survival. To detect nodules accurately during screening, radiologists would commonly take the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes into account, rather than solely the axial plane in clinical evaluation. Inspired by clinical work, the paper aims to develop an accurate deep learning framework for nodule detection by a combination of multiple planes.

    The nodule detection system is designed in two stages, multiplanar nodule candidate detection, multiscale false positive (FP) reduction. At the first stage, a deeply supervised encoder-decoder network is trained by axial, coronal, and sagittal slices for the candidate detection task. All possible nodule candidates from the three different planes are merged. To further refine results, a three-dimensional multiscale dense convolutional neural network that extracts multiscale contextual information is applied to remove non-nodules. In the public LIDC-IDRI dataset, 888 computealso for large lesions on this dataset. This demonstrates the effectiveness of our developed *** system for lung nodule detection.This study tested genetic microbial source tracking (MST) methods for identifying ruminant- (****) and human-associated (HF183/BacR287, BacHum) bacterial faecal contaminants in Ethiopia in a newly created regional faecal sample bank (n = 173). **** performed well, and its marker abundance was high (100% sensitivity (Sens), 95% specificity (Spec), median log10 8·1 marker equivalents (ME) g-1 ruminant faeces). Only **** could be detected, but was limited to the dry season and to sites of higher anthropogenic influence (log10 3·0 to 4·9 (ME + 1) g-1 soil). In conclusion, the large differences in marker abundances between target and non-target faecal samples (median distances between distributions ≥log10 3 to ≥log10 7) and their absence in pristine soil indicate that all tested assays are suitable candidates for diverse MST applications in the Ethiopian area.

    A list of commonly prescribed, oral liquid medications was established from the medication dispensing database of four UK hospitals and a primary care database. The evidence base of currently used dose regimens for each drug was identified from paediatric reference books, summary of product characteristics and the literature. Then, weight-based dose bands were developed and a modified Delphi process was used to achieve healthcare professional consensus about the suggested dose bands for each drug.

    Forty-six experts in paediatric medicines participated in the Delphi process (mean years of experience 17.3 ± 9.4 [standard deviation]) and assessed 45 oral liquid drugs in total. Four categories of weight-based dose bands were established drugs with two dose bands (17.8%, 8/45), drugs with three dose bands (64.4%, 29/45), drugs with four dose bands (15.6%, 7/45) and drugs with five dose bands (2.2%, 1/45). The 46 participants reached consensus on all the suggested dose bands for 53.3% (24/45) of the drugs. Consensus was reached in the first round of the Delphi process for 91.7% (22/24) of the drugs and after two rounds for two drugs. No agreement was achieved on any of the suggested dose bands for 26.7% (12/45) of the drugs.

    This study provides healthcare professionals with a set of recommended weight-based dose bands for commonly prescribed oral liquid drugs for children. These bands could establish the basis for change in clinical practice to reduce dosing errors and improve healthcare for children.

However, limited knowledge about the nature of the splicing factors that bind to ISS-N1 and inhibit splicing exists. It is likely that the effect of Spinraza comes from blocking binding of these factors, but so far, an unbiased characterization has not been performed and only members of the hnRNP A1/A2 family have been identified by Western blot analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance to bind to this silencer. Employing an MS/MS-based approach and surface plasmon resonance imaging, we show for the first time that splicing factor SRSF10 binds to ISS-N1. Furthermore, using splice-switching oligonucleotides we modulated the splicing of the SRSF10 isoforms generating either the long or the short protein isoform of SRSF10 to regulate endogenous SMN2 exon 7 inclusion. We demonstrate that the isoforms of SRSF10 regulate SMN1 and SMN2 splicing with different strength correlating with the length of their RS domain. Moreover, this case also includes the unusual finding of an increase in the mature sebocytes in the area of the syringofibroadenomatous hyperplasia.

Eight tick species belonging to 2 genera were identified, including H. longicornis (n = 373, 31.1%), H. flava (n = 265, 22.1%), D. auratus (n = 153, 12.8%), H. hystricis (n = 119, 9.9%), D. silvarum (n = 116, 9.7%), H. bispinosa (n = 114, 9.5%), D. atrosignatus (n = 33, 2.8%), and D. taiwanensis (n = 24, 2.0%). DNA sequences of Rickettsia spp. (spotted fever group) and Babesia spp. were detected in these ticks. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the possible existence of Candidatus Rickettsia laoensis and Rickettsia raoultii.

Moreover, we constructed a phylogenetic tree with L. aureum and other 34 species based on their complete chloroplast genomes. And the results of the phylogenetic topologies displayed that Plumbago auriculata was closely related to L. aureum. Our results will contribute to the better study and make use of the species.

    To examine existing literature and pool the data to determine the relative odds ratio of "adding-on" (AO) based on various reported criteria for lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves.

    Using electronic databases, studies reporting on AO and LIV selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves were identified. Studies were excluded if they failed to meet the following criteria ≥ 30 patients, Lenke type 1A or 2A curves, thoracic-only fusions, and inclusion of outcome differences in AO and non-AO groups. Review articles, letters, and case reports were excluded.

    Six studies were identified reporting on 732 patients with either Lenke type 1A or 2A curves treated with thoracic-only fusions.     A total of 26,754 patients were included in the study. 11,514 patients (43%) underwent ACDF with structural allograft and 15,240 (57%) underwent ACDF with a synthetic cage. The patients in the allograft group were younger and more likely to be male. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups with respect to 90-day complications including wound dehiscence, dysphagia, dysphonia, and hematoma/seroma. The iPSC line showed a normal karyotype, expressed pluripotency markers and exhibited capability to differentiate into the three germ layers in vitro. This paper investigates the safety effects of two or more speed cameras observed within a specific radius which are defined as multiple speed cameras. A total of 464 speed cameras at treated sites and 3119 control sites are observed and related to road traffic accident data from 1999 to 2007. The effects of multiple speed cameras are evaluated using pairwise comparisons between treatment units with different doses based on the propensity score methods. The spatial effect of multiple speed cameras is investigated by testing various radii. There are two major findings in this study. First, sites with multiple speed cameras perform better in reducing the absolute number of road accidents than those with a single camera. Second, speed camera sites are found to be most effective with a radius of 200 m. For a radius of 200 m and 300 m, the reduction in the personal injury collisions by multiple speed cameras are 21.4 % and 13.2 % more than a single camera. Median duration of bacteremia (22 vs 1 days, p 72 hours was significantly associated with GN-ST (AUC 0.95, sensitivity 0.996 and specificity 0.810, p  less then  0.001). Finally, 30-day mortality was 20% in cases and 67% among controls (p  less then  0.001). CONCLUSION Critically ill patients with GN-ST showed specific clinical features.

The iPSC line showed a normal karyotype, expressed pluripotency markers and exhibited capability to differentiate into the three germ layers in vitro. The mutual influence between two or even more adjacent speed cameras is a relevant attribute worth taking into account when evaluating the safety impacts of speed cameras. This paper investigates the safety effects of two or more speed cameras observed within a specific radius which are defined as multiple speed cameras. A total of 464 speed cameras at treated sites and 3119 control sites are observed and related to road traffic accident data from 1999 to 2007. The effects of multiple speed cameras are evaluated using pairwise comparisons between treatment units with different doses based on the propensity score methods. The spatial effect of multiple speed cameras is investigated by testing various radii. There are two major findings in this study. First, sites with multiple speed cameras perform better in reducing the absolute number of road accidents than those with a single camera. Second, speed camera sites are found to be most effective with a radius of 200 m. For a radius of 200 m and 300 m, the reduction in the personal injury collisions by multiple speed cameras are 21.4 % and 13.2 % more than a single camera.     Endemic polio in Pakistan is threatening the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI). In recent years, vaccine refusals have surged, spiking polio cases. The current study was conducted to understand the ethnic, religious and cultural roots of vaccine refusals in Charsadda District and explore the remedial options.

    We conducted 43 in-depth interviews with parents who had refused polio vaccines for their children and the PEI staff. Interviews were audio-recorded, written in verbatim and analysed with Atlis.ti. We conducted a thematic analysis of our data.

    The fear of American and Jewish conspiracies was the primary cause of vaccine refusals. Militant groups like Tehrek-i-Taliban Pakistan capitalised on this fear, through social media. The Pashtun ethnic group considers itself at the centre of conspiracies. They are suspicious of mass investment and mobilisation behind the polio campaign. Our respondents feared that polio vaccines were making children vulgar. They also feared a reduction in the male to he ethnic, cultural and religious dispositions of community members shape polio vaccine refusals in Charsadda District, in different ways. In synch with existing conspiracy theories and medical misconceptions, these three factors make refusals harder to counter. Awareness campaigns with content addressing these three dimensions can improve the situation.

    An important epidemiological characteristic that might modulate the pandemic potential of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the proportion of undocumented cases.

    Here, we employed a Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered-Dead (SEIRD) model to estimate the proportion of unreported SARS-CoV-2 cases in Italy from the reported number of deaths prior to the adoption of national control measures.

    We estimated 115 894 infectious individuals (95% confidence interval (CI) = 95 318-140 455) and a total of 144 116 cases (95% CI = 119 030-173 959) on 20 March, 2020. These estimates resulted in 67.3% (95% CI = 60.3%-73.0%) unreported infectious individuals and in 67.4% (95% CI = 60.5%-73.0%) total cases. As such, given the substantial volume of undocumented cases, the case fatality risk would drop from an apparent 8.6% to an estimated 2.6% (95% CI = 2.2%-2.9%).

    Our findings partially explain the case fatality risk observed in Italy with a high proportion of unreported SARS-CoV-2 cases. Moreover, we underline that the fraction of undocumented infectious individuals is a critical epidemiological characteristic that needs to be taken into for a better understanding of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic.

    To prevent the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), strict control of person-to-person transmission is essential. Family transmission is the most common route of transmission; however, family transmission patterns and outcomes are not well understood.

    We enrolled confirmed cases discharged from Wuhan Zhuankou Fangcang Shelter Hospital from February 17, 2020 to March 8, 2020 along with the family members they had contact with, to evaluate baseline characteristics, family transmission patterns and outcomes. The follow-up period lasted until May 8, 2020.

    This study evaluated 369 participants, which included 100 patients admitted to the shelter hospital and the family members they had contact with. Family transmission occurred in 62% of household, with 190 cases confirmed to have SARS-CoV-2 infection. There were eight patterns of family transmission, and spousal transmission (44/83, 53.0%) was the most common pattern, especially in the middle-age generation group (35/83, 4ion was the most common. Because the development of new drugs is time consuming, several strategies, including drug repurposing and repositioning, are being tested to treat patients with COVID-19. Researchers have developed several potential vaccine candidates that have shown promise in phase II and III trials. As of 12 November 2020, 164 candidate vaccines are in preclinical evaluation, and 48 vaccines are in clinical evaluation, of which four have cleared phase III trials (Pfizer/BioNTech's BNT162b2, Moderna's mRNA-1273, University of Oxford & AstraZeneca's AZD1222, and Gamaleya's Sputnik V vaccine).     Although a granular cell tumor (GCT) usually develops on the skin or oral mucosa, it has been described in many other organs. GCT typically presents as a solitary tumor, but multiple lesions can occur. It has also been described in association with other diseases.

    To describe the clinical characteristics of cutaneous and oral mucosal GCTs and explore potential associations with other diseases.

    Retrospective study of patients diagnosed with GCT at our hospital between 1995 and 2019. The following information was collected from the patients' medical records age, sex, number of GCTs, location, diameter, time to diagnosis, tentative clinical diagnosis, surgical margin status, recurrence, follow-up time, and associated diseases.

    We detected 89 cutaneous or oral mucosal GCTs in 81 patients (43 women, 38 men) with a mean age of 40.21 years. The mean tumor diameter was 1.34cm. Five of the 81 patients (6.2%) had multiple GCTs, including noncutaneous tumors. Patients with multiple GCTs were on average younger than those with a single tumor (P=.004). There was only a single case of local recurrence and no cases of distant metastasis. None of the patients had associated diseases.

Several studies have recently revealed that Krüppel-like factor 8 (KLF8) regulates transcription of genes linked with diverse biological processes, including proliferation, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, invasion, and inflammation. KLF8 is expressed ubiquitously in mammalian cells, and its aberrant expression has been manifested with several cancer types. Earlier studies demonstrated the crucial role of KLF8 in DNA repair and resistance to apoptosis in numerous cancer types. Hence, studying the function of KLF8 from the perspective of cancer progression and therapy resistance would help develop a new therapeutic avenue. In this review, we summarize the clinical relevance of KLF8 expression in various malignancies, focusing on recent updates in EMT, cellular signaling, and cancer stem cells. Nadofaragene firadenovec (also known as rAd-IFNa/Syn3) is a replication-deficient recombinant adenovirus that delivers human interferon alfa-2b cDNA into the bladder epithelium, and a novel intravesical therapy for BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. We aimed to evaluate its efficacy in patients with BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

    In this phase 3, multicentre, open-label, repeat-dose study done in 33 centres (hospitals and clinics) in the USA, we recruited patients aged 18 years or older, with BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group status of 2 or less. Patients were excluded if they had upper urinary tract disease, urothelial carcinoma within the prostatic urethra, lymphovascular invasion, micropapillary disease, or hydronephrosis. Eligible patients received a single intravesical 75 mL dose of nadofaragene firadenovec (3 × 10

To describe the clinical characteristics of cutaneous and oral mucosal GCTs and explore potential associations with other diseases. Retrospective study of patients diagnosed with GCT at our hospital between 1995 and 2019. The following information was collected from the patients' medical records age, sex, number of GCTs, location, diameter, time to diagnosis, tentative clinical diagnosis, surgical margin status, recurrence, follow-up time, and associated diseases. We detected 89 cutaneous or oral mucosal GCTs in 81 patients (43 women, 38 men) with a mean age of 40.21 years. The mean tumor diameter was 1.34cm. Five of the 81 patients (6.2%) had multiple GCTs, including noncutaneous tumors. Patients with multiple GCTs were on average younger than those with a single tumor (P=.004). Several studies have recently revealed that Krüppel-like factor 8 (KLF8) regulates transcription of genes linked with diverse biological processes, including proliferation, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, invasion, and inflammation. KLF8 is expressed ubiquitously in mammalian cells, and its aberrant expression has been manifested with several cancer types. Earlier studies demonstrated the crucial role of KLF8 in DNA repair and resistance to apoptosis in numerous cancer types. Hence, studying the function of KLF8 from the perspective of cancer progression and therapy resistance would help develop a new therapeutic avenue.
