IEC Code Renewal

While the Import-Export Code (IEC) technically has lifetime validity, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) now mandates an Annual Updation (often called "renewal") to keep it active.

Here is the essential guide for the 2026-27 cycle:

1. The Deadline

  • Window: April 1 to June 30 every year.
  • Mandatory: You must log in and confirm your details even if there have been no changes in your business.
  • Penalty for Delay: If not updated by June 30, the IEC is automatically deactivated. While it can be reactivated later, your shipments and customs clearances will be blocked in the interim.

2. Cost & Fees

Scenario

Government Fee

No Changes (Verification only)

₹0 (Free)

Modifications (Address, Bank, etc.)

₹200

3. Step-by-Step Renewal Process

The entire process is handled online via the DGFT Portal.

  1. Login: Access your profile on the DGFT website.
  2. Link IEC: If you haven't linked your IEC to your user profile yet, you must do this first using your PAN and a digital signature/Aadhaar OTP.
  3. Update/Modify: Click on "Update/Modify IEC".
  4. Verification: Review all tabs (Entity details, Branch details, Director/Partner info, and Bank account).
  5. Declaration: Accept the terms and click 'Preview' to check the details.
  6. Authentication: Sign the application using:
  • Aadhaar OTP (Common for individuals/proprietorships).
  • DSC (Class 3 Digital Signature) (Common for Companies/LLPs).
Submission: Once submitted, the system generates an updated IEC certificate instantly.

4. Key Documents to Have Handy

Even if you aren't changing anything, keep these nearby for verification:

  • Bank Details: Cancelled cheque or bank certificate.
  • Address Proof: Utility bill or rent agreement (if the address changed).
  • Mobile/Email: Must be active to receive OTPs for the filing process.

Quick Tip

Since it's currently April 2026, the renewal window is now open. It is highly recommended to complete the "nil change" update early to avoid the last-minute portal traffic in late June, which often causes technical glitches.

If you are managing multiple IECs or helping clients with their annual compliance, there are several advanced technical details and "portal behaviors" to keep in mind for the 2026-27 update cycle.

1. Deactivation & Reactivation (The "Soft-Lock")

If an IEC is not updated by June 30, 2026, the DGFT portal will automatically shift its status to "Deactivated."

  • The "Silent" Block: You might not get a warning email until your shipment is actually stuck at customs (ICEGATE).
  • Instant Reactivation: Unlike other government licenses, if your IEC is deactivated for non-updation, it is instantly reactivated the moment you complete the online update. No manual intervention from a DGFT officer is usually required.

2. Technical Prerequisites for 2026

The DGFT portal has become stricter about digital security. To complete the update, ensure:

  • Linking is Done: You cannot "update" an IEC if it isn't linked to a user profile. If you are doing this for the first time, you’ll need the IEC number, the exact name as per PAN, and the Bank Account Number or Primary Mobile/Email from the original registration to link it.
  • Browser Requirements: Use the latest version of Chrome or Edge. Clear your cache if the "Sign" button doesn't trigger the OTP/DSC window.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Ensure the primary contact's mobile is handy, as the portal now frequently uses 2FA for logins before you even reach the update screen.

3. Common Error Areas

Error Type

Solution

PAN Mismatch

The name on the DGFT portal must match the PAN card character-for-character. Even a missing space can cause a "Validation Failed" error.

DSC Troubles

For Companies/LLPs, the Digital Signature (Class 3) must be in the name of a Director/Partner who is already listed in the IEC profile.

Bank Validation

If you change bank details, the system now performs an automated PFMS validation. If the bank name doesn't match the entity name, the update may be flagged for manual review.

4. Specific Scenarios

  • No Business Activity: Even if you had zero imports or exports in the last year, you must still perform the "nil" update.
  • Address Changes: If you moved your office, you must upload a new address proof (Utility bill or Rent Agreement). In 2026, the portal often cross-references the GSTN database for address consistency.
  • Branch Additions: If you’ve opened new warehouses or branches, the annual update is the best time to add these to the IEC to avoid issues with local customs authorities.

5. Summary of Compliance Timeline

  • April 1 – June 30: Mandatory Annual Update window (Free if no changes).
  • July 1 onwards: IECs not updated are deactivated.
  • Post-Deactivation: Update can still be filed, but trade is halted until the "Success" message appears on the dashboard.

Pro-Tip: Always download the updated IEC Certificate (it will show the "Date of Last Updation" as 2026) and keep it for your records, as banks may request this for processing foreign inward remittances.
