  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common problem in general the Canadian population. It can effect day-to-day activities and is also associated with several health issues. This study aimed to investigate the association between co-morbidities and the prevalence of EDS over a four-year period in adults living in two First Nation communities. Data collected during the First Nations Lung Health Project (FNLHP) conducted in two Cree First Nation communities in Saskatchewan in 2012-2013 (Cycle 1) and 2016 (Cycle 2) were used for this analysis. There were 859 participants aged 18 years and older at baseline (Cycle 1) and 821 participants aged 18 years and older at follow-up (Cycle 2) who completed the interviewer-administered questionnaire. An Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score > 10 was considered to be abnormal and identified as a case of EDS at both time points. A multilevel logistic regression model using a generalized estimating equations approach was used to analyze the data. The prevalence of EDS at baseline (Cycle 1) was 11.2% (91/815) and 10.0% (80/803) at follow-up (Cycle 2). Based on the predicted model, longitudinal change in the prevalence of EDS was -0.11% for 358 individuals who participated in both cycles. Environmental changes (shift work, jet lag, exposure to light at night), mutations in circadian regulating genes, and changes to clock gene expression are recognized forms of disruption and are associated with cancer risk and/or cancer progression. Experimental data in animals and cell cultures further supports the role of the cellular circadian clock in coordinating cell division and DNA repair, and disrupted cellular clocks accelerate cancer cell growth. This review will summarize studies linking circadian disruption to cancer biology and explore how such disruptions may be further altered by common characteristics of tumors including hypoxia and acidosis. We will highlight how circadian rhythms might be exploited for cancer drug development, including how delivery of current chemotherapies may be enhanced using chronotherapy. Understanding the role of circadian rhythms in carcinogenesis and tumor progression will enable us to better understand causes of cancer and how to treat them.Despite advances in translational research, the overall 5-year survival for pancreatic cancer remains dismal and with rising incidence pancreatic cancer is predicted to be the second leading cause of cancer death for many developed countries. Surgical intervention followed by cytotoxic chemotherapy are currently the best options for treatment, but disease recurrence is very common. Efforts to develop new therapeutic agents and delivery systems are necessary to achieve better clinical efficacy with less toxicity. Promising prospects are arising with new preclinical and clinical therapeutic strategies using small molecule targeted therapies, RNAi, stromal therapies, and immunotherapies. With a better understanding of the biology to aid target selection and discovery of biomarkers to aid precision medicine, better opportunities will evolve to shape the therapeutic landscape, enhance patient quality of life and increase overall survival.The mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN) is a common contaminant of ***** feed which has been related to a wide range of reproductive anomalies in *****, such as pelvic organ prolapse, anestrous, and pseudopregnancy. At the end of the trial, liver, anterior vagina, posterior vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and broad ligament were collected from pigs. ZEN was found in the anterior vagina, posterior vagina, cervix, and ovaries, with significantly higher concentrations in the cervix relative to other reproductive tissues. ZEN and α-ZEL were found in liver tissue from pigs in each treatment group. Our results show that ZEN accumulates more in the cervix than other reproductive tissues. The presence of ZEN in reproductive tissues may be indicative of ZEN-related reproductive symptoms. Future work could examine how ZEN concentrations vary in reproductive tissues as a factor of the pigs age, weight, sex, or parity, to establish parameters that make pig more sensitive to ZEN.Lymphomatous infiltration of kidney parenchyma is a frequent complication of systemic hematologic malignancies and often shows subtle clinical presentation. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma represents the most frequent form involving the kidney, with advanced stage at diagnosis, poor outcome, and risk for central nervous system relapse if not adequately treated. Kidney biopsy can provide specific and early detection of these cases, helping in the differential diagnosis with more frequent entities. Finally, further hematologic workup (bone marrow biopsy, complete blood cell count, and positron emission tomography) can distinguish secondary involvement of the kidney from the rarer kidney-limited forms, especially in patients without a previous diagnosis of lymphoma. Making a prompt and correct diagnosis directs the management of these cases and may improve the outcome, as described in the present report.

  • A refractive index (RI) tunable polysiloxane coating was fabricated based on the cross-linked network structure embedded with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), in which the MSNs were utilized to modulate the RI as well as to support the interior structure of the polysiloxane coating. The Si-O-Si inorganic backbone structure in combination with characteristics from the photopolymerization of active bonds produced the main cross-linked network structure, and controllable embedding of MSNs constructed the network-sphere structure. Spectral signatures of H, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, andIrweredetected. Along with the atomic emission, this work reports the molecular emission from FeO molecules. The concentration of the measured elements obtained using CF-LIBS is in close agreement with earlier reports. The elements H, N, and O and their concentrations are estimated by using CF-LIBS for the first time. This study applies laser spectroscopy to establish the presence of Ni, Cr, Co, and Ir in meteorites. The elemental analysis forms the basis for the establishment of the potential molecular composition of the Dergaon meteorite. Moreover, the elemental analysis approach bodes well for in-situ analyses of extraterrestrial objects including applications in planetary rover missions.The present experiment was carried out to study the influences of exogenously-applied nitric oxide (NO) donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as seed primers on growth and yield in relation with different physio-biochemical parameters, antioxidant activities, and osmolyte accumulation in wheat plants grown under control (100% field capacity) and water stress (60% field capacity) conditions. During soaking, the seeds were covered and kept in completely dark. Drought stress markedly reduced the plant growth, grain yield, leaf photosynthetic pigments, total phenolic content (TPC), total soluble proteins (TSP), leaf water potential (Ψw), leaf turgor potential (Ψp), osmotic potential (Ψs), and leaf relative water content (LRWC), while it increased the activities of enzymatic antioxidants and the accumulation of leaf ascorbic acid (AsA), proline (Pro), glycine betaine (GB), malondialdehyde (MDA), and H2O2. However, seed priming with SNP and H2O2 alone and in combination mitigated the deleterious effects of water stress on growth and yield by improving the Ψw, Ψs, Ψp, photosynthetic pigments, osmolytes accumulation (GB and Pro), TSP, and the antioxidative defense mechanism. Furthermore, the application of NO and H2O2 as seed primers also reduced the accumulation of H2O2 and MDA contents. The effectiveness was treatment-specific and the combined application was also found to be effective.   • Therapeutic strategies that successfully combine two techniques-autologous micrografting and biodegradable scaffolds-offer great potential for improved wound repair and decreased scarring. In this study we evaluate the efficacy of a novel modification of a collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold with autologous micrografts using a murine dorsal wound model.

    db/db **** underwent dorsal wound excision and were treated with a collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold (CGS), a modified collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold (CGS+MG) or simple occlusive dressing (Blank). The modified scaffold was created by harvesting full thickness micrografts and transplanting these into the collagen-glycosaminoglycan membrane. Parameters of wound healing, including cellular proliferation, collagen deposition, keratinocyte migration, and angiogenesis were assessed.

    The group treated with the micrograft-modified scaffold healed at a faster rate, showed greater cellular proliferation, collagen deposition, and keratinocyte migration with healing. Clinically, the successful scaffold engraftment, micrograft viability and improved wound healing offer promising results for the development of a new therapeutic modality for wound repair.In order to improve the electrochemical capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs), it is necessary to introduce the porous organic frameworks with well-defined hetero atom species in cathode. In this work, porous nanomaterials with ultra-high nitrogen containing and adjustable porosity named Schiff-based networks (SNWs) were selected as potential candidate for sulfur host in LiSBs. Two SNW samples have been constructed by reacting melamine with phenyl or biphenyl dialdehydes through microwave-assisted method, respectively. The high BET surface area provided sufficient room to impregnate sulfur and mitigated volume changes during the cycling performance. Besides, the high density and homogeneous distribution of pyridinic-N and aminic-N in SNW nanoparticles can cooperatively form lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) chemisorption via enhanced Li+-N interactions to effectively suppressed the 'shuttle effect'. Attributed to its structural superiorities, SNW/S cathode demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance in LiSBs. In particular, SNW-2/S cathode delivers an excellent cyclability with a specific capacity of 620 mAh · g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C, counting with a low capacity fading of 0.0508% per cycle. This work highlights the importance of rational design for effective LiPSs chemisorption and pioneers a facile strategy for developing suitable sulfur host materials towards high-performance LiSBs.The first-principles electron-hole Lindhard response function has been calculated and analyzed in detail for two (TMTSF)2 X (X = ClO4 and NO3) Bechgaard salts undergoing different anion-ordering (AO) transitions. The calculation was carried out using the real triclinic low-temperature structures. The evolution of the electron-hole response with temperature for both relaxed and quenched salts is discussed. In our methodology, CNFs were dispersed in SF due to the hydrogen bond-forming ability of hexafluoro-2-propanol, a fluoroalcohol used as a solvent for SF. Results showed enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical properties upon the incorporation of CNFs into the SF scaffolds, while the metabolic activities of cells cultured on SF/CNF nanocomposite scaffolds were significantly improved by optimizing the CNF content, porosity and pore size range of the scaffolds.
    Therapeutic strategies that successfully combine two techniques-autologous micrografting and biodegradable scaffolds-offer great potential for improved wound repair and decreased scarring. In this study we evaluate the efficacy of a novel modification of a collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold with autologous micrografts using a murine dorsal wound model. db/db mice underwent dorsal wound excision and were treated with a collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold (CGS), a modified collagen-glycosaminoglycan scaffold (CGS+MG) or simple occlusive dressing (Blank). The modified scaffold was created by harvesting full thickness micrografts and transplanting these into the collagen-glycosaminoglycan membrane. Parameters of wound healing, including cellular proliferation, collagen deposition, keratinocyte migration, and angiogenesis were assessed. The group treated with the micrograft-modified scaffold healed at a faster rate, showed greater cellular proliferation, collagen deposition, and keratinocyte migration with healing. Clinically, the successful scaffold engraftment, micrograft viability and improved wound healing offer promising results for the development of a new therapeutic modality for wound repair.In order to improve the electrochemical capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs), it is necessary to introduce the porous organic frameworks with well-defined hetero atom species in cathode. In this work, porous nanomaterials with ultra-high nitrogen containing and adjustable porosity named Schiff-based networks (SNWs) were selected as potential candidate for sulfur host in LiSBs. Two SNW samples have been constructed by reacting melamine with phenyl or biphenyl dialdehydes through microwave-assisted method, respectively. The high BET surface area provided sufficient room to impregnate sulfur and mitigated volume changes during the cycling performance. Besides, the high density and homogeneous distribution of pyridinic-N and aminic-N in SNW nanoparticles can cooperatively form lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) chemisorption via enhanced Li+-N interactions to effectively suppressed the 'shuttle effect'. Attributed to its structural superiorities, SNW/S cathode demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance in LiSBs. In particular, SNW-2/S cathode delivers an excellent cyclability with a specific capacity of 620 mAh · g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C, counting with a low capacity fading of 0.0508% per cycle. Medical charts were reviewed. The phenotypes of sarcoidosis were defined using a hierarchical cluster analysis.A total of 1237 patients were included (562 men and 675 women). The mean age at sarcoidosis diagnosis was 43.5±13 years. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified five distinct phenotypes according to organ involvement and disease type and symptoms 1) erythema nodosum, joint involvement and hilar lymph nodes (n=180); 2) eye, neurological, digestive and kidney involvement (n=137); 3) pulmonary involvement with fibrosis and heart involvement (n=630); 4) lupus pernio and a high percentage of severe involvement (n=41); and 5) hepatosplenic, peripheral lymph node and bone involvement (n=249). Phenotype 1 was associated with being European/Caucasian and female and with non-manual work, phenotype 2 with being European/Caucasian, and phenotypes 3 and 5 with being non-European/Caucasian. The labour worker proportion was significantly lower in phenotype 5 than in the other phenotypes.This multicentre study confirms the existence of distinct phenotypes of sarcoidosis, with a non-random distribution of organ involvement. These phenotypes differ according to sex, geographical origin and socioprofessional category.Severe asthma exacerbations are a major cause of school absences and healthcare costs in children, particularly those in high-risk racial/ethnic groups.To identify susceptibility genes for severe asthma exacerbations in Latino children and adolescents, we conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 4010 Latino youth with asthma in four independent cohorts, including 1693 Puerto Ricans, 1019 Costa Ricans, 640 Mexicans, 256 Brazilians and 402 members of other Latino subgroups. We then conducted methylation quantitative trait locus, expression quantitative trait locus and expression quantitative trait methylation analyses to assess whether the top single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the meta-analysis is linked to DNA methylation and gene expression in nasal (airway) epithelium in separate cohorts of Puerto Rican and Dutch children and adolescents.In the meta-analysis of GWAS, an SNP in FLJ22447 (rs2253681) was significantly associated with 1.55 increased odds of severe asthma exacerbation (95% CI 1.34-1.79, p=6.3×10-9). RNA sequencing analysis revealed that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling and fatty acid degradation/metabolism pathways were significantly downregulated in ETV5-deficient hepatocytes in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, ETV5 could bind to the PPAR response element region of downstream genes and enhance its transactivity. Collectively, our study identifies ETV5 as a novel transcription factor for the regulation of hepatic fatty acid metabolism, which is required for the optimal β-oxidation process. ETV5 may provide a therapeutic target for the treatment of hepatic steatosis.
    Myofunctional therapy has demonstrated efficacy in treating sleep-disordered breathing. We assessed the clinical use of a new mobile health (mHealth) app that uses a smartphone to teach patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) to perform oropharyngeal exercises.

    We conducted a pilot randomized trial to evaluate the effects of the app in patients with severe OSAHS.

    Forty patients with severe OSAHS (apnea-hypoxia index [AHI]>30) were enrolled prospectively and randomized into an intervention group that used the app for 90 sessions or a control group. Anthropometric measures, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (0-24), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (0-21), Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) scores, and oxygen desaturation index were measured before and after the intervention.

    After the intervention, 28 patients remained. No significant changes were observed in the control group; however, the intervention group showed significant improvements in most metrics. From the age of 16 years, polysomnography and video-EEG led to the detection of frequent epileptic apnoea during sleep. Although the frequency of generalised tonic seizure clusters was reduced by treatment with phenobarbital and potassium bromide, epileptic apnoea persisted. Furthermore, frequent epileptic apnoea observed in our patient was regarded as a factor for aspiration and deterioration of respiratory function. This study indicates that patients with Pitt-Hopkins syndrome require close monitoring for epileptic apnoea. Moreover, long-term EEG and respiratory monitoring are necessary to distinguish epileptic apnoea from other respiratory disorders in patients with Pitt-Hopkins syndrome.

  • Online gaming is a very common form of leisure among adolescents and young people, although its excessive and/or compulsive use is associated with psychological impairments in a minority of gamers. The latest (fifth) edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, Section III) tentatively introduced Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Since then, a number of evaluation tools using the DSM-5 criteria have been developed, including the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF). The main objective of this study was to translate and adapt the IGDS9-SF into Spanish, as well as to obtain indicators relating to its validity and reliability. The Spanish version of four scales were administered IGDS9-SF, Mobile Phone-Related Experiences Questionnaire (CERM), Online Gambling Disorder Questionnaire (OGD-Q), and KIDSCREEN-27. The sample comprised 535 Vocational Training students (mean age 18.35 years; SD±2.13; 78.5% males) who reported playing video games in the past 12 months. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded a one-dimensional model with a good fit while the reliability indicators were satisfactory. Findings indicated that 1.9% of gamers were classified with IGD (meeting five or more criteria for more than 12 months). Additionally, another 1.9% were considered gamers 'at-risk' because they endorsed four criteria. Positive and significant relationships were found between the IGDS9-SF, the CERM, and the OGD-Q. Participants classified with IGD had poorer health-related quality of life. In conclusion, the Spanish IGDS9-SF is a valid and reliable instrument to assess IGD according to the DSM-5.In order to support uncontrolled proliferation, cancer cells need to adapt to increased energetic and biosynthetic requirements. The effect of curcumin and its solvent, ethanol, was explored on four different cancer cell lines, in which the Warburg effect varied. Vital cellular parameters (proliferation, viability) were measured along with the glucose consumption and lactate production. The transcripts of pyruvate kinase 1 and 2 (PKM1, PKM2), serine hydroxymethyltransferase 2 (SHMT2) and phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) were quantified with RT-qPCR. The amount and intracellular localization of PKM1, PKM2 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) proteins were analyzed by Western blot. The response to ethanol and curcumin seemed to be cell-type specific, with respect to all parameters analyzed. This presents a challenge for establishing a near real-time GNSS monitoring system, as since the displacement of a reference station can be easily misinterpreted as a sign of rapid movement at the monitoring station. In this study, based on the reference observations in different time domains, asynchronous and synchronous RTK are proposed and applied together to address this issue, providing more reliable displacement information. Using the asynchronously generated time difference of a reference frame, the proposed approach can detect whether a measured displacement has occurred in the reference or the monitoring station in the current epoch. This allows for the separation of reference station movements from monitoring station movements.     Online gaming is a very common form of leisure among adolescents and young people, although its excessive and/or compulsive use is associated with psychological impairments in a minority of gamers. The latest (fifth) edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, Section III) tentatively introduced Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Since then, a number of evaluation tools using the DSM-5 criteria have been developed, including the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF). The main objective of this study was to translate and adapt the IGDS9-SF into Spanish, as well as to obtain indicators relating to its validity and reliability. The Spanish version of four scales were administered IGDS9-SF, Mobile Phone-Related Experiences Questionnaire (CERM), Online Gambling Disorder Questionnaire (OGD-Q), and KIDSCREEN-27. The sample comprised 535 Vocational Training students (mean age 18.35 years; SD±2.13; 78.5% males) who reported playing video games in the past 12 months. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded a one-dimensional model with a good fit while the reliability indicators were satisfactory. Findings indicated that 1.9% of gamers were classified with IGD (meeting five or more criteria for more than 12 months). Additionally, another 1.9% were considered gamers 'at-risk' because they endorsed four criteria. Positive and significant relationships were found between the IGDS9-SF, the CERM, and the OGD-Q. Participants classified with IGD had poorer health-related quality of life. In conclusion, the Spanish IGDS9-SF is a valid and reliable instrument to assess IGD according to the DSM-5.In order to support uncontrolled proliferation, cancer cells need to adapt to increased energetic and biosynthetic requirements. Curcumin, a natural compound, has been shown to interact with multiple molecules and signaling pathways in cancer cells, including those relevant for cell metabolism. The effect of curcumin and its solvent, ethanol, was explored on four different cancer cell lines, in which the Warburg effect varied. Vital cellular parameters (proliferation, viability) were measured along with the glucose consumption and lactate production. The transcripts of pyruvate kinase 1 and 2 (PKM1, PKM2), serine hydroxymethyltransferase 2 (SHMT2) and phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) were quantified with RT-qPCR. The amount and intracellular localization of PKM1, PKM2 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) proteins were analyzed by Western blot. The response to ethanol and curcumin seemed to be cell-type specific, with respect to all parameters analyzed. High sensitivity to curcumin was present in the cell lines originating from head and neck squamous cell carcinomas FaDu, Detroit 562 and, especially, Cal27. Very low sensitivity was observed in the colon adenocarcinoma-originating HT-29 cell line, which retained, after exposure to curcumin, a higher levels of lactate production despite decreased glucose consumption. For instance, after experiencing prolonged low-temperature exposure in winter (winter cold), vernalization-responsive plants remember past cold experience when temperature rises in spring, to acquire competence to flower at a later season favourable for seed production1,2. In Arabidopsis thaliana, prolonged cold induces silencing of the potent floral repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) by Polycomb group (PcG) chromatin modifiers. This Polycomb-repressed chromatin state is epigenetically maintained and thus 'memorized' in subsequent growth and development upon return to warmth1,3. 'Memory of winter cold' has been viewed as being mitotically stable but meiotically unstable3-5, and thus not to be transmitted intergenerationally. In general, whether and how chromatin-mediated environmental memories are transmitted across generations are unknown in plants. Here, we show that the cold-induced Polycomb-repressed chromatin state at FLC or memory of winter cold is maintained in the egg cell, that is meiotically stable in the process of female gamete formation, and provide evidence that this Polycomb-mediated memory is not maintained in the sperm cell. Moreover, we show that this cold memory is inherited maternally but not paternally to the zygote and early embryos. Although direct severe kidney trauma is relatively infrequent, extrarenal tissue trauma frequently results in the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). Various causes, including haemorrhagic shock, rhabdomyolysis, use of nephrotoxic drugs and infectious complications, can trigger and exacerbate trauma-related AKI (TRAKI), particularly in the presence of pre-existing or trauma-specific risk factors. Injured, hypoxic and ischaemic tissues expose the organism to damage-associated and pathogen-associated molecular patterns, and oxidative stress, all of which initiate a complex immunopathophysiological response that results in macrocirculatory and microcirculatory disturbances in the kidney, and functional impairment. The simultaneous activation of components of innate immunity, including leukocytes, coagulation factors and complement proteins, drives kidney inflammation, glomerular and tubular damage, and breakdown of the blood-urine barrier. This immune response is also an integral part of the intense post-trauma crosstalk between the kidneys, the nervous system and other organs, which aggravates multi-organ dysfunction. Necessary lifesaving procedures used in trauma management might have ambivalent effects as they stabilize injured tissue and organs while simultaneously exacerbating kidney injury. Consequently, only a small number of pathophysiological and immunomodulatory therapeutic targets for TRAKI prevention have been proposed and evaluated.Escherichia coli is considered to be the best-known microorganism given the large number of published studies detailing its genes, its genome and the biochemical functions of its molecular components. This vast literature has been systematically assembled into a reconstruction of the biochemical reaction networks that underlie E. coli's functions, a process which is now being applied to an increasing number of microorganisms. Genome-scale reconstructed networks are organized and systematized knowledge bases that have multiple uses, including conversion into computational models that interpret and predict phenotypic states and the consequences of environmental and genetic perturbations. These genome-scale models (GEMs) now enable us to develop pan-genome analyses that provide mechanistic insights, detail the selection pressures on proteome allocation and address stress phenotypes. In this Review, we first discuss the overall development of GEMs and their applications. Next, we review the evolution of the most complete GEM that has been developed to date the E. coli GEM. Finally, we explore three emerging areas in genome-scale modelling of microbial phenotypes collections of strain-specific models, metabolic and macromolecular expression models, and simulation of stress responses.

In a prospective, cross sectional study, 44 consecutive women with severe or poorly controlled gestational diabetic pregnancies in their third trimester on insulin therapy were recruited and matched with 44 women with normal pregnancies which served as the control group. Using Doppler echocardiography the foetal Mod-MPI was calculated. The foetal Mod-MPI was significantly higher in the diabetic group compared to the controls indicating significant myocardial dysfunction. The Mod-MPI served as an excellent marker of adverse outcomes. Foetal myocardial function was significantly impaired in poorly controlled gestational diabetics and there was a significant link of Mod-MPI to intrauterine markers of hypoxia, as well as to an adverse outcome. Mod-MPI has the potential to imr cardiac dysfunction, can therefore be used in the clinical setting to track a deteriorating metabolic state.To study post-diagnosis dietary supplement use in relation to total mortality, cancer mortality and recurrence among cancer survivors. PubMed and Cochrane Library were searched until April 2019 for observational studies (OS) and randomized clinical trials (RCT). Pooled risk ratios (RR) were calculated using random-effects models. Compared to no supplementation, calcium supplementation was associated with lower total (RR = 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77-1.00, I2=0%, four OS) and cancer mortality (RR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.53-0.95, I2=0%, three OS) among all cancer survivors, and cancer mortality among colorectal cancer survivors (RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.47-0.94, I2=0%, two OS). Vitamin D supplementation was associated with lower total mortality (RR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.76-0.99, I2=0%, three OS and two RCT). Among breast cancer survivors, supplementation with vitamin C (RR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.68-0.92, I2=0%, four OS), D (RR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.72-0.99, I2=0%, two OS), and E (RR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.90, I2=0%, three OS) was associated with lower total mortality, while multivitamins (RR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.64-0.97, I2=0%, two OS), vitamin C (RR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.91, I2=0%, two OS), and E (RR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.55-0.85, I2=0%, two OS) with lower cancer recurrence. More RCTs are needed to justify any recommendation for use.Background Elderly ovarian cancer (OC) patients are more likely to be managed suboptimally, with worse clinical outcomes as a result. Strategies to decrease morbidity are lacking.Methodology Consecutive patients with advanced stage OC (IIIC-IV) who were managed in our center between January 2016 and July 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and interval debulking surgery (IDS) according to our institution protocol. We divided patients into two groups Group 1 (age ≥ 70 years) and Group 2 (age less then 70 years). The primary outcome of the study was assessment of peri-operative morbidity amongst two groups.Results A total of 153 patients were referred during the study period. 114 patients underwent IDS after NACT (74.5%), 46 in Group 1 and 68 in Group 2. Elderly patients were more likely to receive more than three cycles of NACT prior to IDS compared to younger patients (39% vs. 19%, p = 0.03). Elderly patients were more frequently subjected to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) as pre-operative assessment (63% vs. 27%, p = 0.002). Optimal/complete resection was achieved in all patients in Group 1 (100%) and in 97% of patients in Group 2. With the exception of higher postoperative cardiac arrhythmias in Group 1 (11% vs. 1%, p = 0.04), no significant differences in 30-day morbidity were observed. No 90-day death in both groups was registered.Conclusion Older age should not preclude clinicians from offering ultra-radical resection to patients with advanced OC after NACT. In our series, elderly patients received the same treatment with similar outcomes to the younger group. The results show that participating in ECHO resulted in personal and professional benefit, and increased understanding about their own roles and limitations, as well as other healthcare professionals' roles.

Compared to no supplementation, calcium supplementation was associated with lower total (RR = 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77-1.00, I2=0%, four OS) and cancer mortality (RR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.53-0.95, I2=0%, three OS) among all cancer survivors, and cancer mortality among colorectal cancer survivors (RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.47-0.94, I2=0%, two OS). Vitamin D supplementation was associated with lower total mortality (RR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.76-0.99, I2=0%, three OS and two RCT). Among breast cancer survivors, supplementation with vitamin C (RR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.68-0.92, I2=0%, four OS), D (RR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.72-0.99, I2=0%, two OS), and E (RR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.90, I2=0%, three OS) was associated with lower total mortality, while multivitamins (RR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.64-0.97, I2=0%, two OS), vitamin C (RR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.91, I2=0%, two OS), and E (RR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.55-0.85, I2=0%, two OS) with lower cancer recurrence. Conclusions Findings are mostly based on OS. More RCTs are needed to justify any recommendation for use.Background Elderly ovarian cancer (OC) patients are more likely to be managed suboptimally, with worse clinical outcomes as a result. Strategies to decrease morbidity are lacking.Methodology Consecutive patients with advanced stage OC (IIIC-IV) who were managed in our center between January 2016 and July 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and interval debulking surgery (IDS) according to our institution protocol. We divided patients into two groups Group 1 (age ≥ 70 years) and Group 2 (age less then 70 years). The primary outcome of the study was assessment of peri-operative morbidity amongst two groups.Results A total of 153 patients were referred during the study period. 114 patients underwent IDS after NACT (74.5%), 46 in Group 1 and 68 in Group 2. Elderly patients were more likely to receive more than three cycles of NACT prior to IDS compared to younger patients (39% vs. 19%, p = 0.03). Elderly patients were more frequently subjected to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) as pre-operative assessment (63% vs. 27%, p = 0.002). Optimal/complete resection was achieved in all patients in Group 1 (100%) and in 97% of patients in Group 2. With the exception of higher postoperative cardiac arrhythmias in Group 1 (11% vs. 1%, p = 0.04), no significant differences in 30-day morbidity were observed. No 90-day death in both groups was registered.Conclusion Older age should not preclude clinicians from offering ultra-radical resection to patients with advanced OC after NACT. In our series, elderly patients received the same treatment with similar outcomes to the younger group. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which compared TMZ plus WBRT with single WBRT in the advanced NSCLC patients with BM were included. The outcomes analysis reported objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), quality of life (QOL), and adverse effects. Two reviewers will independently extract data from the selected studies and assess the quality of studies. Statistical analyses will be performed using Review manager 5.3 software. Random-effects or fixed models were used to estimate pooled hazard ratio and relative risk. In this study, we enrolled 32 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Raw electroencephalography (EEG) signals were acquired at a sampling rate of 128 Hz using BIS-VISTA with standard bispectral index (BIS) sensors. All data were stored on a computer for further analysis. The similarities and difference among spectral entropy, the BIS, and CAI were analyzed. Pearson correlation coefficient between the BIS and CAI was 0.825. The result of fitting the semiparametric regression models is the method CAI estimate (-0.00995; P = .0341). It is the estimated difference in the mean of the dependent variable between method BIS and CAI. The CAI algorithm, a simple and intuitive algorithm based on brain activity signal modeling, suggests an intrinsic relationship between the DoA and the EEG waveform. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO through the OVID database and CENTRAL through the Cochrane Library for clinical randomized controlled trials investigating new pharmacological treatments in patients with HFrEF published up to September 30, 2018.

In this special diet, almost all dietary fatty acids were SFA. Long-term feeding of SFA-rich diet to HCVcpTg **** increased hepatic steatosis, liver dysfunction, and the prevalence of liver tumors, likely due to stimulation of de novo lipogenesis, activation of the pro-inflammatory and pro-oncogenic transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), enhanced c-Jun N-terminal kinase/activator protein 1 (JNK/AP-1) signaling and induction of the oncogenes cyclin D1 and p62/sequestosome 1. The SFA-rich diet did not affect liver fibrosis or autophagy. Collectively, long-term SFA-rich diet consumption promoted hepatic tumorigenesis mainly through activation of lipogenesis, NF-κB, and JNK/AP-1 signaling. Overall, thirty systematic reviews were included (with ~131,813 people with multiple sclerosis). A variety of psychosocial factors were identified in relation to adjustment to multiple sclerosis. Seven theoretical models that underpinned the available services and ten different intervention categories (e.g. cognitive behavioural approaches, mindfulness) for adjustment to multiple sclerosis were identified. There was some evidence that these interventions improved quality of life and coping, however, the difference they could make to people's adjustment was inconclusive. It was also difficult to conclude whether these interventions were particularly effective with the newly diagnosed. There is some support for the effectiveness of adjustment interventions. Due to generation of significant amount of waste throughout its utilization, a noticeable number of physical, chemical and biological processes has been introduced as remediation processes although mechanisms of optimum removal process are still under investigation. Removal mechanisms and influencing factors for radionuclide removal are elucidated in this review so that, further, operation and process development can be promoted. Again, resource recovery, opportunities and challenges are also discussed for elevating the removal rates and minimizing the knowledge gaps existing in development and applications of novel decontamination processes.Embodied cognition research on Parkinson's disease (PD) points to disruptions of frontostriatal language functions as sensitive targets for clinical assessment. However, no existing approach has been tested for crosslinguistic validity, let alone by combining naturalistic tasks with machine-learning tools. To address these issues, we conducted the first classifier-based examination of morphological processing (a core frontostriatal function) in spontaneous monologues from PD patients across three typologically different languages. The study comprised 330 participants, encompassing speakers of Spanish (61 patients, 57 matched controls), German (88 patients, 88 matched controls), and Czech (20 patients, 16 matched controls). All subjects described the activities they perform during a regular day, and their monologues were automatically coded via morphological tagging, a computerized method that labels each word with a part-of-speech tag (e.g., noun, verb) and specific morphological tags (e.g., person, gender, number, tense). The ensuing data were subjected to machine-learning analyses to assess whether differential morphological patterns could classify between patients and controls and reflect the former's degree of motor impairment. Removal mechanisms and influencing factors for radionuclide removal are elucidated in this review so that, further, operation and process development can be promoted. Again, resource recovery, opportunities and challenges are also discussed for elevating the removal rates and minimizing the knowledge gaps existing in development and applications of novel decontamination processes.Embodied cognition research on Parkinson's disease (PD) points to disruptions of frontostriatal language functions as sensitive targets for clinical assessment. However, no existing approach has been tested for crosslinguistic validity, let alone by combining naturalistic tasks with machine-learning tools. To address these issues, we conducted the first classifier-based examination of morphological processing (a core frontostriatal function) in spontaneous monologues from PD patients across three typologically different languages. The study comprised 330 participants, encompassing speakers of Spanish (61 patients, 57 matched controls), German (88 patients, 88 matched controls), and Czech (20 patients, 16 matched controls). All subjects described the activities they perform during a regular day, and their monologues were automatically coded via morphological tagging, a computerized method that labels each word with a part-of-speech tag (e.g., noun, verb) and specific morphological tags (e.g., person, gender, number, tense). The ensuing data were subjected to machine-learning analyses to assess whether differential morphological patterns could classify between patients and controls and reflect the former's degree of motor impairment. Taken together, our results suggest that morphological patterning, an embodied frontostriatal domain, may be distinctively affected in PD across languages and even under ecological testing conditions.
