For the initial 2-3% of the first discharge process, the vacant sites in the sulfide layer are filled by Li; Cu extrusion then accompanies further insertion of Li. Mn2.5+ is reduced to Mn2+ during the first half of the discharge. The overall charging process involves the removal of Li and re-insertion of Cu into the sulfide layers with re-oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn2.5+. However, due to the different diffusivities of Li and Cu, the processes operating on charge are quite different from those operating during the first discharge charging to 2.75 V results in the removal of most of the Li, little reinsertion of Cu, and good capacity retention. A charge to 3.75 V is required to fully reinsert Cu, which results in significant changes to the sulfide sublattice during the following discharge and poor capacity retention. Additionally, race and culture, religion, and sexual and gender identity will be highlighted as essential conversation considerations especially as the majority of the literature is centered around white, hetero, and monogamous relationships. Created by a group of couple and family therapy graduate trainees based on the literature and their own personal and professional experiences, the pre-cohabitation conversations are organized into three categories- relationship negotiations, household rules, and communication.

  • The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is the peripheral synapse formed between a motor neuron axon terminal and a muscle fibre. NMJs are thought to be the primary site of peripheral pathology in many neuromuscular diseases, but innervation/denervation status is often assessed qualitatively with poor systematic criteria across studies, and separately from 3D morphological structure. Here, we describe the development of 'NMJ-Analyser', to comprehensively screen the morphology of NMJs and their corresponding innervation status automatically. NMJ-Analyser generates 29 biologically relevant features to quantitatively define healthy and aberrant neuromuscular synapses and applies machine learning to diagnose NMJ degeneration. We validated this framework in longitudinal analyses of wildtype ****, as well as in four different neuromuscular disease models three for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and one for peripheral neuropathy. We showed that structural changes at the NMJ initially occur in the nerve terminal of mutant TDP43 and FUS ALS models. Using a machine learning algorithm, healthy and aberrant neuromuscular synapses are identified with 95% accuracy, with 88% sensitivity and 97% specificity. Our results validate NMJ-Analyser as a robust platform for systematic and structural screening of NMJs, and pave the way for transferrable, and cross-comparison and high-throughput studies in neuromuscular diseases.Metastasis is the process of cancer cell dissemination from primary tumors to different organs being the bone the preferred site for metastatic homing of prostate cancer (PCa) cells. Prostate tumorigenesis is a multi-stage process that ultimately tends to advance to become metastatic PCa. Once PCa patients develop skeletal metastases, they eventually succumb to the disease. Therefore, it is imperative to identify essential molecular drivers of this process to develop new therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of this devastating disease. Here, we have identified MAP4K4 as a relevant gene for metastasis in PCa. Our work shows that genetic deletion of MAP4K4 or pharmacological inhibition of its encoded kinase, HGK, inhibits metastatic PCa cells migration and clonogenic properties. Hence, MAP4K4 might promote metastasis and tumor growth. Mechanistically, our results indicate that HGK depleted cells exhibit profound differences in F-actin organization, increasing cell spreading and focal adhesion stability. Additionally, HGK depleted cells fails to respond to TNF-α stimulation and chemoattractant action. Moreover, here we show that HGK upregulation in PCa samples from TCGA and other databases correlates with a poor prognosis of the disease. Hence, we suggest that it could be used as prognostic biomarker to predict the appearance of an aggressive phenotype of PCa tumors and ultimately, the appearance of metastasis. In summary, our results highlight an essential role for HGK in the dissemination of PCa cells and its potential use as prognostic biomarker.Minerals play an important role in animal metabolism. For the firm surface, there was no improvement in balance for both bandwidths-this may be because the young subjects could already balance near-optimally or optimally on the surface by themselves. For the compliant surface, balance improved with the introduction of wide but not narrow bandwidth noise, and balance is improved for wide compared to narrow bandwidth noise. This could be explained using a simple model, which suggests that adding noise to a sub-threshold pressure stimulus results in markedly different frequency of nerve impulse transmitted to the brain for the narrow and wide bandwidth noise-the frequency is negligible for the former but significantly higher for the latter. Our results suggest that if a person's standing balance is not optimal (for example, due to aging), it could be improved by applying a wide bandwidth noise to the feet.

  • A total of 53 (58.2 %) patients survived while 38(41.8 %) patients succumbed. Delay in presentation to hospital, intracranial extension and loss of vision at presentation adversely affected the outcome (p < 0.05). Aggressive surgical management in the form of multiple debridements was superior to single debridement (p < 0.05). Diabetic ketoacidosis did not significantly affect the outcome (p = 0.359).

    65 male Wistar rats were allocated to 5 groups A (healthy control), B (diabetic rats with a normal diet), C (diabetic rats supplemented with 50g/kg/day spirulina), D (diabetic rats supplemented with 50g/kg/day chlorella) and E (diabetic rats supplemented with 25g/kg/day chlorella and 25g/kg/day spirulina). After 21days, wounds were inflicted on the **** of rats. Assessment of blood sugar (BS), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), granulation tissue formation, vascularization, epithelialization, and percentage of wound healing were determined along with macroscopic examinations.

    The microscopic changes at days 3, 7, 14, and 21 showed significant evidence of improved angiogenesis, epithelial proliferation, and granulation tissue formation in the spirulina and chlorella treated rats compared with the controls (p˂0.05). Both spirulina and chlorella treatments of diabetic rats resulted in a significant reduction in BS and weight (p˂0.05), but VEGF and hs-CRP levels did not significantly change (

    Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) affects up to 50 % diabetic patients. Moreover, uncontrolled diabetes associated with impaired wound healing. The present study was aimed at exploring the effect of apple peel extract (APE) on type 2 diabetes (T2D)-induced DPN and delayed wound healing.

    Mutation in various regions of the adiponectin (ADIPOQ) gene is described to be associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our aim was to investigate the association between rs1501299 (SNP + 276G > T) and rs266729 (SNP-11377 C > G) polymorphisms of ADIPOQ gene and susceptibility to T2D in an Iranian population.

However, the molecular mechanisms mediating the establishment of these beneficial relationships remain unclear. Our previous genetic mapping and whole-genome resequencing studies identified a gene deletion event of a Populus trichocarpa lectin receptor-like kinase gene PtLecRLK1 in Populus deltoides that was associated with poor-root colonization by the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria bicolor. By introducing PtLecRLK1 into a perennial grass known to be a non-host of L. bicolor, switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), we found that L. bicolor colonizes ZmUbipro-PtLecRLK1 transgenic switchgrass roots, which illustrates that the introduction of PtLecRLK1 has the potential to convert a non-host to a host of L. bicolor. Furthermore, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses on inoculated-transgenic switchgrass roots revealed genes/proteins overrepresented in the compatible interaction and underrepresented in the pathogenic defence pathway, consistent with the view that pathogenic defence response is down-regulated during compatible interaction. Metabolomic profiling revealed that root colonization in the transgenic switchgrass was associated with an increase in N-containing metabolites and a decrease in organic acids, sugars, and aromatic hydroxycinnamate conjugates, which are often seen in the early steps of establishing compatible interactions. These studies illustrate that PtLecRLK1 is able to render a plant susceptible to colonization by the ectomycorrhizal fungus L. bicolor and shed light on engineering mycorrhizal symbiosis into a non-host to enhance plant productivity and fitness on marginal lands.
    Mosquito larval control through the use of insecticides is the most common strategy for suppressing West Nile virus (WNV) vector populations in Connecticut (CT), USA. To evaluate the ability of larval control to reduce entomological risk metrics associated with WNV, we performed WNV surveillance and assessments of municipal larvicide application programs in Milford and Stratford, CT in 2019 and 2020. Each town treated catch basins and nonbasin habitats (Milford only) with biopesticide products during both WNV transmission seasons. Adult mosquitoes were collected weekly with gravid and CO
    -baited light traps and tested for WNV; larvae and pupae were sampled weekly from basins within 500 m of trapping sites, and Culex pipiens larval mortality was determined with laboratory bioassays of catch basin water samples.

    Declines in 4th instar larvae and pupae were observed in catch basins up to 2-week post-treatment, and we detected a positive relationship between adult female C.pipiens collections in gravid traps and pupal abundance in basins. We also detected a significant difference in total light trap collections between the two towns. Despite these findings, C.pipiens adult collections and WNV mosquito infection prevalence in gravid traps were similar between towns.

    Larvicide applications reduced pupal abundance and the prevalence of host-seeking adults with no detectable impact on entomological risk metrics for WNV. Further research is needed to better determine the level of mosquito larval control required to reduce WNV transmission risk.

    The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., and the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.), are now widely regarded as important public health pests following their rapid global resurgence, largely due to insecticide resistance and an increased rate of global travel. The insecticide resistance mechanisms are well documented in C. lectularius, however, only one mechanism is validated in C. hemipterus thus far. This demands further understanding on the resistance mechanisms involved in C. hemipterus.

    Here, we identified differences in resistance to fenitrothion (organophosphate) and imidacloprid (neonicotinoid) related cuticle thickness in C. hemipterus. There is evidence of a possible association between cuticle thickness and resistance, but the association can be tenuous, likely because resistance is multifactorial in C. hemipterus. We also discovered a novel T1011 residue in domain IIS6 of the voltage-gated sodium channel that likely enhanced susceptibility to deltamethrin (pyrethroid) despite the presence of a L1014F mutation known to confer pyrethroid resistance in C. hemipterus. Our findings also confirmed that the M918I mutation enhanced resistance to pyrethroid when present with the L1014F mutation, which was consistent with a super-kdr phenotype, as reported previously. Multiple resistance mechanisms can be found within a single C. hemipterus population, and the presence of both M918I + L1014F mutations likely masked the influence of cuticle thickness in conferring resistance against deltamethrin. The elevated metabolic enzyme activities in some strains were not necessarily associated with increased insecticide resistance.

  • High vaccination rates within the general population are essential for overcoming the current COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the present study was to investigate intentions to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as well as the predictors of such intentions. A representative sample of the Norwegian population (N = 1,003, 49.5% females, Mage = 47.9, SD = 17.1) filled in an online questionnaire assessing the components of the Theory of planned behavior (attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control), as well as optimistic bias and anticipated regret. Results showed that a majority (61.6%) of participants intend to get vaccinated. Regression analysis revealed that intentions were predicted by positive attitudes toward vaccination (β = 0.31, p less then 0.001), subjective norms in favor of vaccination in one's family (β = 0.23, p less then 0.001), perceived behavioral control (β = 0.09, p less then 0.001), and by anticipated net regret (β = 0.32, p less then 0.001), explaining 69% (f 2 = 2.23) of the variance in intentions. As the contributions of behavioural science to the UK's COVID-19 response policies in early 2020 became apparent, a debate emerged in the British media about its involvement. This served as a unique opportunity to capture public discourse and representation of behavioural science in a fast-track, high-stake context. We aimed at identifying elements which foster and detract from trust and credibility in emergent scientific contributions to policy making. With this in mind, in Study 1 we use corpus linguistics and network analysis to map the narrative around the key behavioural science actors and concepts which were discussed in the 647 news articles extracted from the 15 most read British newspapers over the 12-week period surrounding the first hard UK lockdown of 2020. We report and discuss (1) the salience of key concepts and actors as the debate unfolded, (2) quantified changes in the polarity of the sentiment expressed toward them and their policy application contexts, and (3) patterns of co-occurrence via network analyses. To establish public discourse surrounding identified themes, in Study 2 we investigate how salience and sentiment of key themes and relations to policy were discussed in original Twitter chatter (N = 2,187). In Study 3, we complement these findings with a qualitative analysis of the subset of news articles which contained the most extreme sentiments (N = 111), providing an in-depth perspective of sentiments and discourse developed around keywords, as either promoting or undermining their credibility in, and trust toward behaviourally informed policy. The study involved 705 respondents aged 16-77, including 435 parents living with children under 16. Personal traits, positive and negative affect, coping styles, and well-being were studied by Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI)-RU, Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS)-RU, Brief COPE, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), respectively. Mutual understanding was studied using a self-report questionnaire. Cluster analysis (k-means method) was used to divide the sample into clusters in accordance with the combination of positive and negative affect. We aimed at identifying elements which foster and detract from trust and credibility in emergent scientific contributions to policy making. With this in mind, in Study 1 we use corpus linguistics and network analysis to map the narrative around the key behavioural science actors and concepts which were discussed in the 647 news articles extracted from the 15 most read British newspapers over the 12-week period surrounding the first hard UK lockdown of 2020. We report and discuss (1) the salience of key concepts and actors as the debate unfolded, (2) quantified changes in the polarity of the sentiment expressed toward them and their policy application contexts, and (3) patterns of co-occurrence via network analyses. To establish public discourse surrounding identified themes, in Study 2 we investigate how salience and sentiment of key themes and relations to policy were discussed in original Twitter chatter (N = 2,187). In Study 3, we complement these findings with a qualitative analysis of the subset of news articles which contained the most extreme sentiments (N = 111), providing an in-depth perspective of sentiments and discourse developed around keywords, as either promoting or undermining their credibility in, and trust toward behaviourally informed policy. Notably, harmicine 27a, m-(trifluoromethyl)cinnamic acid derivative, exhibited the most favourable selectivity index (SI = 1105). The common scaffolds, including antimicrobial peptides, N-heterocyclic carbenes, Schiff bases, photosensitive-grand-cycle skeleton structures, aliphatic amines-based ligands, and special metal-based complexes are summarized here. We also discuss their therapeutic targets and the risks that should be paid attention to in the future studies, aiming to provide information for researchers on metal-based complexes as antimicrobial agents and inspire the design and synthesis of new antimicrobial drugs.Zostera marina, a widespread seagrass, evolved from a freshwater ancestor of terrestrial monocots and successfully transitioned into a completely submerged seagrass. Contents and activities of chlororespiration, Mehler reaction, malic acid synthesis, and photorespiration key enzymes were not upregulated, suggesting that alternative electron flows remained unactivated.   • There are many drivers to intensify the manufacturing of vaccines. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has only added to them. Since the pandemic began, we are seeing an acceleration of vaccine development and approval, including application of novel prophylactic vaccine modalities. We have also seen an increase in the appreciation and general understanding of what had been a somewhat obscure discipline. Concurrently, there has been great interest in the application of new understandings and technology to the intensification of biopharmaceutical processes in general. The marriage of these developments defines the field of vaccine manufacturing process intensification. Difficulties in its implementation include the many disparate vaccine types- from conjugate to hybrid to nucleic-acid based. Then, there are the respective and developing manufacturing methods, modes, and platforms- from fermentation of transformed bacteria to the bioreactor culture of recombinant animal cells to production of virus-like particles in transgenic plants. Advances are occurring throughout the biomanufacturing arena, from process development (PD) techniques to manufacturing platforms, materials, equipment, and facilities. Bioprocess intensification refers to systems for producing more product per cell, time, volume, footprint, or cost. The need for vaccine manufacturing process intensification is being driven by desires for cost control, process efficiency, and the heightened pressures of pandemic response. In this review, we outline our practical approach to paraproteinaemic disorders, discuss the utility and limitations of diagnostic tests and the distinctive clinical phenotypes and touch on the complex multidisciplinary management approaches.

    One-year and 3-year NS was consistently higher for Canada and Norway, and lower for the UK, New Zealand and Ireland, irrespective of stage at diagnosis. Three-year NS for NSCLC ranged from 19.7% for the UK to 27.1% for Canada for men and was consistently higher for women (25.3% in the UK; 35.0% in Canada) partly because men were diagnosed at more advanced stages. International differences in survival for NSCLC were largest for regional stage and smallest at the advanced stage. For SCLC, 3-year NS also showed a clear female advantage with the highest being for Canada (1ion practice, as well as differences in histological verification, staging and coding across jurisdictions.Changes in the distribution and abundance of invasive species can have far-reaching ecological consequences. Programs to control invaders are common but gauging the effectiveness of such programs using carefully controlled, large-scale field experiments is rare, especially at higher trophic levels. Experimental manipulations coupled with long-term demographic monitoring can reveal the mechanistic underpinnings of interspecific competition among apex predators and suggest mitigation options for invasive species. We used a large-scale before-after control-impact removal experiment to investigate the effects of an invasive competitor, the barred owl (Strix varia), on the population dynamics of an iconic old-forest native species, the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). Removal of barred owls had a strong, positive effect on survival of sympatric spotted owls and a weaker but positive effect on spotted owl dispersal and recruitment. After removals, the estimated mean annual rate of population change for spotted owls stabilized in areas with removals (0.2% decline per year), but continued to decline sharply in areas without removals (12.1% decline per year). The results demonstrated that the most substantial changes in population dynamics of northern spotted owls over the past two decades were associated with the invasion, population expansion, and subsequent removal of barred owls. Our study provides experimental evidence of the demographic consequences of competitive release, where a threatened avian predator was freed from restrictions imposed on its population dynamics with the removal of a competitively dominant invasive species.

The results demonstrated that the most substantial changes in population dynamics of northern spotted owls over the past two decades were associated with the invasion, population expansion, and subsequent removal of barred owls. Our study provides experimental evidence of the demographic consequences of competitive release, where a threatened avian predator was freed from restrictions imposed on its population dynamics with the removal of a competitively dominant invasive species.   • In the period studied (2015-20), of a total of 116 unfilled ST3 posts, 39 remained vacant because appointable candidates declined the available posts (33%). Appropriate changes to the current national selection processes could help address the perceived OMFS ST recruitment problems. By increasing the number of available ST1 posts, widening the window during which appointable candidates can continue into training and increasing prior experience recognition (including creating benchmarking processes prior to ST). These 3 clear, fair and transparent changes could reduce the current levels of attrition.Deep head and neck space lesions can present a number of diagnostic challenges due to their deep anatomical position and difficult access for diagnostic tissue sampling. We describe a series of percutaneous 'transfacial' buccal space computed tomography (CT)-guided core biopsies of these lesions and subsequent histological findings. Six patients underwent CT-guided core biopsy of deep parotid, parapharyngeal, or masticator space lesions over a 30-month period. We describe our biopsy technique and correlate our histological findings with subsequent surgical resection where performed. Five of six of CT-guided biopsies obtained sufficient tissue for histological interpretation with varying findings, including salivary gland tumours and squamous cell carcinoma confirmed on subsequent resection. One patient was treated palliatively following core biopsy. No biopsy-related complications were observed. In our small series, percutaneous CT-guided transfacial biopsy via the buccal space has proved an excellent option for the minimally invasive tissue acquisition of deep head and neck space lesions.A reasoned argument as to why the status quo for oral and maxillofacial surgery training is not sustainable and an alternative is suggested. Outcome was assessed by accuracy of fit at the surgical margins and was 94.5%. The study group was statistically tested against a previous series by the same group and was statistically different with respect to the case complexity (p less then 0.001) and accuracy of fit (p less then 0.001) (Fisher's exact test). Complications included the removal on one plate due to patient choice, with perfect surgical position and resolving diplopia. Only one plate articulation was poor, this mitigated by the size of the defect and the orbital soft tissue swelling which prohibited seating the implant. The patient remains well with acceptable function and satisfactory aesthetics. We present design considerations including the use two part plates, and surgical pearls to achieve predictable placement. We believe that the use of custom plates for reconstruction of Jaquiery 4 and 5 should be considered. We regard this technology as a game changer in surgical management of the complex high risk orbit.
    The COVID-19 pandemic brings unforeseen challenges in medical education. The current study aims to 1) describe third-year medical students' experiences with the novel Shelf-Exam-Type Question Didactics (SET QD) before (in-person) and during (virtual) COVID-19.

    In this qualitative study using grounded theory, we conducted purposive sampling and used 23 in-depth semi-structured interviews. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and the Atlas.Ti software was used to manage the thematic analysis.

    There are three themes and eight subthemes that emerged 1) The SET QD Framework (sub-themes questions as learning opportunities; interleaving; notable clinical scenarios; team learning; accountability). 2) Experienced Educator (subtheme transformational teaching). 3) Virtual Accessibility (sub-themes alleviating time constraints, and mitigating life-stressors).

    Medical students regarded SET QD as impactful for shelf exam preparation, clinical preparation, and long-term retention of the material. This novel virtual didactic method may be used in non-surgical clerkships as well.

Improved reference genomes, combined with widespread genome sequencing using short-read sequencing technology, and increasingly using long-read sequencing, have reignited interest in SV. Recent large-scale studies and functional focused analyses have highlighted the role of SV in human evolution. In this review, we highlight human-specific SVs involved in changes in the brain, population-specific SVs that affect response to the environment, including adaptation to diet and infectious diseases, and summarise the contribution of archaic hominin admixture to present-day human SV.The antagonistic pleiotropy (AP) theory posits that adaptive evolutionary changes, which facilitate reproduction and individual fitness early in life, can enhance detrimental aging-related processes. Several genes associated with human brain diseases play a protective role in infection, suggesting the relevance of AP in the context of brain aging and neurodegeneration. Relatedly, genetic variants that confer immune protection against pathogens may lead to uncontrolled brain inflammation later in life. Here, we propose a conceptual framework suggesting that the pleiotropic roles of genes in infections and host-pathogen interactions should be considered when studying neurological illnesses. We reinterpret recent findings regarding the impact of neurological disease-associated genetic traits on infections and chronic inflammatory diseases. Identifying the AP pathways shared among these seemingly unrelated conditions might provide further insights into the detrimental role of the immune system in brain disease as well as the mechanisms involved in chronic infections.

  • A novel fabric phase sorptive extraction protocol is developed for rapid exposure monitoring of six bisphenol analogues, including bisphenol A, bisphenol S, bisphenol F, bisphenol E, bisphenol B, bisphenol C, and diethylstilbestrol (DES) from human urine prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array analysis. FPSE sample pretreatment protocol ensures the harmonization of the proposed method with the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC). Among eighteen evaluated FPSE membranes, sol-gel poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) coated cellulose FPSE membrane resulted in the most efficient extraction. This polar FPSE membrane effectively exploits a number of advantageous features inherent to FPSE including sponge-like porous architecture of the sol-gel sorbent coating, favorable surface chemistry, flexibility and built-in permeability of cellulose fabric substrate, high primary contact surface area for rapid sorbent-analyte interaction, expanded pH, solvent and thermal stability as well as reusabe samples.Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are long linear sulfated polysaccharides implicated in processes linked to disease development such as mucopolysaccharidosis, respiratory failure, cancer, and viral infections, thereby serving as potential biomarkers. A successful clinical translation of GAGs as biomarkers depends on the availability of standardized GAG measurements. However, owing to the analytical complexity associated with the quantification of GAG concentration and structural composition, a standardized method to simultaneously measure multiple GAGs is missing. In this study, we sought to characterize the analytical performance of a ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS)-based kit for the quantification of 17 free GAG disaccharides. The kit showed acceptable linearity, selectivity and specificity, accuracy and precision, and analyte stability in the absolute quantification of 15 disaccharides. In native human samples, here using urine as a reference matrix, the analytical performance of the kit was acceptable for the quantification of CS disaccharides. Intra- and inter-laboratory tests performed in an external laboratory demonstrated robust reproducibility of GAG measurements showing that the kit was acceptably standardized. In conclusion, these results indicated that the UHPLC-MS/MS kit was standardized for the simultaneous measurement of free GAG disaccharides allowing for comparability of measurements and enabling translational research.Detailed metabolic profiling of needles of five Pinus species was investigated using complementary HPLC-MS/MS techniques together with supervised and unsupervised chemometric tools. This resulted in putative identification of 44 compounds belonging to flavonoids, phenolics, lignans, diterpenes and fatty acids. Unsupervised principal component analysis showed that differences were maintained across the metabolites characteristic of each Pinus species, are mainly related to di-O-p-coumaroyltrifolin, p-coumaroyl quinic acid derivative, arachidonic acid, hydroxypalmitic acid, isopimaric acid and its derivative. A supervised Partial Least Squares regression analysis was performed to correlate HPLC-MS/MS profiles with the variation observed in the in vitro anticholinesterase, antiaging and anti-diabetic potential. All investigated Pinus extracts exerted their antiaging activity via increasing telomerase and TERT levels in normal human melanocytes cells compared to the control (untreated cells). Profound inhibition activities of acetylcholinesterase and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 were also observed with P. pinea and P. canariensis extracts having comparable antidiabetic activities to sitagliptin as a standard antidiabetic drug. Our findings suggested that pine needles are a good source of phenolics and diterpenoids that have possible health promoting activities in management and alleviation of diabetic conditions and Alzheimer disease.Alzheimer's disease (AD) is defined by the presence of abundant amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau neuropathology. While this neuropathology is necessary for AD diagnosis, it is not sufficient for causing cognitive impairment. Up to one third of community dwelling older adults harbor intermediate to high levels of AD neuropathology at death yet demonstrate no significant cognitive impairment. Conversely, there are individuals who exhibit dementia with no gross explanatory neuropathology. In prior studies, synapse loss correlated with cognitive impairment. To understand how synaptic composition changes in relation to neuropathology and cognition, multiplexed liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry was used to quantify enriched synaptic proteins from the parietal association cortex of 100 subjects with contrasting levels of AD pathology and cognitive performance. 123 unique proteins were significantly associated with diagnostic category. Functional analysis showed enrichment of serotonin release and oxidative phosphorylation categories in normal (cognitively unimpaired, low neuropathology) and "resilient" (unimpaired despite AD pathology) individuals. In contrast, frail individuals, (low pathology, impaired cognition) showed a metabolic shift towards glycolysis and increased presence of proteasome subunits.Laboratory batch experiments were performed to assess the reduction of trichloroethene (TCE) and oxygen via natural ferrous minerals. TCE reduction under anoxic conditions was measured via the generation of reduced gases, while oxygen reduction via the generation of hydroxyl radicals was measured as a surrogate for potential TCE oxidation. Results showed that TCE reduction under anoxic conditions was observed for ankerite, siderite, and illite, but not for biotite; acetylene was the primary identified dechlorination product.
