  • Intracellular pH (pHi) homeostasis is crucial for cellular functions and signal transduction across all kingdoms of life. In particular, bacterial pHi homeostasis is important for physiology, ecology, and pathogenesis. Here we report an exquisite bacterial acid-resistance (AR) mechanism in which proton leak elicits a pre-emptive AR response. A single bacterial cell undergoes quantal electrochemical excitation, termed "BacFlash", which consists of membrane depolarization, transient pHi rise, and bursting production of reactive oxygen species. BacFlash ignition is dictated by acid stress in the form of proton leak across the plasma membrane and the rate of BacFlash occurrence is reversely correlated with the pHi buffering capacity. Through genome-wide screening, we further identify the ATP synthase Fo complex subunit a as the putative proton sensor for BacFlash biogenesis. Importantly, persistent BacFlash hyperactivity activates transcription of a panel of key AR genes and predisposes the cells to survive imminent extreme acid stress. Karyotype reports of chondrichthyans are scarce because of the difficulty in cell culture. Here, we focused on carpet shark species and the culture conditions for fibroblasts and lymphocytes. The utility of the cultured cells enabled the high-fidelity characterization of their karyotypes, namely 2n = 102 for the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum), and 2n = 106 for the brownbanded bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) and whitespotted bamboo shark (C. plagiosum). We identified heteromorphic XX/XY sex chromosomes for the two latter species and demonstrated the first-ever fluorescence in situ hybridization of shark chromosomes prepared from cultured cells. This study evaluated the amount of nutritional supplements adsorbed to the ECMO circuit under controlled ex vivo conditions. Six identical ECMO circuits were primed with fresh human whole blood and maintained under physiological conditions at 36 °C for 24 h. A dose of nutritional supplement calculated for a 70 kg patient was added. 150 mL volume was drawn from the priming bag for control samples and kept under similar conditions. Blood samples were obtained at predetermined time points and analyzed for concentrations of vitamins, minerals, lipids, and proteins. Data were analyzed using mixed models with robust standard errors. No significant differences were found between the ECMO circuits and the controls for any of the measured variables cobalamin, folate, vitamin A, glucose, minerals, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides or total proteins. There was an initial decrease and then an increase in the concentration of cobalamin and folate. Vitamin A concentrations decreased in both groups over time. There was a decrease in concentration of glucose and an increased concentration of lactate dehydrogenase over time in both groups. There were no significant alterations in the concentrations of nutritional supplements in an ex vivo ECMO circuit compared to control samples. The time span of this study was limited, thus, clinical studies over a longer period of time are needed.Flooding is a common and critical disaster in agriculture, because it causes defects in plant growth and even crop loss. In addition, submergence rapidly removed active markers of histone modifications at a gene locus involved in JA biosynthesis. Magnetic hot spot of the MIM metamaterial improves considerably electromagnetic coupling with spins in the embedded Py stripes. With the whole hybridized structure being optimized based on coupled-mode theory, perfect absorption condition is approached and an approximately 190-fold enhancement of spin-rectifying photovoltage is experimentally demonstrated at the ferromagnetic resonance at 7.1 GHz. Our work provides an innovative solution to harvest microwave energy for spintronic applications, and opens the door to hybridized magnetism from artificial and natural magnetic materials for emergent applications such as efficient optospintronics, magnonic metamaterials and wireless energy transfer.

  • The Hirshfeld surface analysis for the Zn2+ metallic center helped to determine its coordination number and geometry for each complex. Finally, the antibacterial properties of the complexes were determined with respect to three Gram-positive strains, viz. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, and Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, and two Gram-negative bacteria, viz. Escherichia coli ATCC 25992 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and were compared with the activity of zinc 2-pirrolidone 5-carboxylate (ZnPCA), commonly applied in dermatology. It was found that the Zn(II) complexes with methionine and glycine exhibited a higher antibacterial activity than the tested standard, and the antimicrobial properties of complex with Trp were satisfactory. The results of the antimicrobial activity examination allow us to postulate that the obtained zinc complexes might become new active substances for use in dermatological products.TGF-β1 has been known to induce diabetic nephropathy with renal fibrosis and glomerulosclerosis. DNA-recognized peptide compound pyrrole-imidazole (PI) polyamides as novel biomedicines can strongly bind promoter lesions of target genes to inhibit its transcription. We have developed PI polyamide targeting TGF-β1 for progressive renal diseases. In the present study, we evaluated the contribution of TGF-β1 in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, and examined the effects of PI polyamide targeting TGF-β1 on the progression of diabetic nephropathy in rats. For in vitro experiments, rat renal mesangial cells were incubated with a high (25 mM) glucose concentration. Diabetic nephropathy was established in vivo in eight-week-old Wistar rats by intravenously administering 60 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). We examined the effects of PI polyamide targeting TGF-β1 on phenotype and the growth of mesangial cells, in vitro, and the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy in vivo. High glucose significantly increased expression of TGF-β1 mRNA, changed the phenotype to synthetic, and increased growth of mesangial cells. STZ diabetic rats showed increases in urinary excretions of protein and albumin, glomerular and interstitial degenerations, and podocyte injury. Treatment with PI polyamide targeting TGF-β1 twice weekly for three months improved the glomerular and interstitial degenerations by histological evaluation. Treatment with PI polyamide improved podocyte injury by electron microscopy evaluation. These findings suggest that TGF-β1 may be a pivotal factor in the progression of diabetic nephropathy, and PI polyamide targeting TGF-β1 as a practical medicine may improve nephropathy.Early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS) is a major cause of neonatal death and long-term neurodevelopmental disabilities among survivors. Recently, we exploited a phenotypic-based screening system composed of ex vivo human skin cultures to search for effective materials to regulate skin pigmentation. Since a previous study reported the potent inhibitory effect of metformin on melanogenesis, we evaluated several biguanide compounds. The unexpected effect of phenformin, once used as an oral anti-diabetic drug, on cutaneous darkening motivated us to investigate its underlying mechanism utilizing a chemical genetics approach, and especially to identify alternatives to phenformin because of its risk of severe lactic acidosis. Chemical pull-down assays with phenformin-immobilized beads were performed on lysates of human epidermal keratinocytes, and subsequent mass spectrometry identified 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7). Consistent with this, AY9944, an inhibitor of DHCR7, was found to decrease autophagic melanosome degradation in keratinocytes and to intensely darken skin in ex vivo cultures, suggesting the involvement of cholesterol biosynthesis in the metabolism of melanosomes. Thus, our results validated the combined utilization of the phenotypic screening system and chemical genetics as a new approach to develop promising materials for brightening/lightening and/or tanning technologies.Resveratrol, a phytophenol, is a commonly used equine nutraceutical supplement touted to exert anti-inflammatory effects. The effect of orally administered resveratrol on tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), leukocyte phagocytic activity or oxidative burst function have not been reported in horses. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a commercially available, orally administered resveratrol product on innate immune functions in healthy adult horses. Whole blood was collected from 12 horses prior to and following 3 weeks of treatment with either the manufacturer's recommended dose of resveratrol or placebo. Phagocytosis, oxidative burst and pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP) motif-stimulated leukocyte production of TNF and IL-1β were compared pre- and post-treatment between treatment groups. Phagocytosis and oxidative burst capacity were evaluated via flow cytometry. Tumor necrosis factor and IL-1β were measured using cytotoxicity and ELISA assays, respectively. There were no significant differences in phagocytosis, oxidative burst or stimulated TNF or IL-1β production between resveratrol and placebo treatment groups. Orally administered resveratrol at a routinely recommended dose for a duration of 3 weeks did not significantly affect phagocytic activity, oxidative burst function or PAMP-stimulated leukocyte cytokine production.

  • According to the logistic regression, thoracic scoliosis had no significant association with age, BMI, duration of illness and onset age (p > 0.05). However, gender, BCVA, type of strabismus and degree of strabismus showed a significant relationship with the prevalence of thoracic scoliosis (p  less then  0.05). CONCLUSIONS With a pooled prevalence of 14.94%, strabismus patients showed a great higher risk of developing thoracic scoliosis. Screening for scoliosis in strabismus patients can be helpful to discover a high prevalence of potential coronal scoliosis. More attention should be paid to ophthalmological problems in patients with scoliosis.   • Retractions of scientific papers published by some Iran-affiliated scientists in the preceding decade have attracted **** attention and publicity; however, the reasons for these retractions have not been documented. We searched the Retraction Watch Database to enumerate the retracted Iran-affiliated papers from December 2001 to December 2019 and aimed to outline the predominant reasons for retractions. The reasons included fake peer-review, authorship dispute, fabricated data, plagiarism, conflict of interest, erroneous data, and duplication. The Fisher's exact test was used to investigate the associations between retractions and their underlying reasons. We selected P  less then  0.05 to indicate the statistically significant differences. We found 697 retracted papers. Duplication (27%), plagiarism (26%), and fake peer-review (21%) were the most frequent reasons for retractions. Our study highlights the importance of urgent intervention to prevent the misconduct and questionable research practices that lead to retractions in Iran. Continually educating the scientists and postgraduate students about the ethics and norms of scientific publishing is an important measure to ensure publication of reliable, worthy, and impactful papers.In many areas of psychology, correlation-based network approaches (i.e., psychometric networks) have become a popular tool. In this paper, we propose an approach that recursively splits the sample based on covariates in order to detect significant differences in the structure of the covariance or correlation matrix. Psychometric networks or other correlation-based models (e.g., factor models) can be subsequently estimated from the resultant splits. We adapt model-based recursive partitioning and conditional inference tree approaches for finding covariate splits in a recursive manner. The empirical power of these approaches is studied in several simulation conditions. Examples are given using real-life data from personality and clinical research.
    In British Columbia (**), there have been 2790 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of June 20, 2020. The aim of this project is to capture the effect of COVID-19 on the volume of surgery and adaptations to the surgical care of patients at a breast centre in **.

    All proven or suspected breast cancer cases treated with surgery between March 16, 2019 and April 30, 2019 and March 16, 2020 and April 30, 2020 through the Providence Breast Centre were included in this review. The date ranges in 2020 mark the early COVID-19 pandemic period in ** and the large shift in operating room access during this time.

    In 2019, 99 patients underwent surgery for proven breast cancer and 30 patients for suspected breast cancer. In 2020, 162 patients underwent surgery for breast cancer and 34 for suspected breast cancer. Wait times from core biopsy to surgery and surgery to oncology consultation were improved in 2020 with a reduction of core biopsy to surgery time from 58 to 28days for patients seen during the pandemic. There was an increased use of regional anesthesia and same day discharge compared to 2019 with increases in regional anesthesia (41%-89%) and same day discharge (64%-86%) after adaptations to the pandemic were implemented.

    Changes such as improved access to telemedicine, timing for cancer surgeries, and safer anesthetic techniques in response to the pandemic will change breast cancer surgical care beyond the pandemic era. Centralization and team-based care is the way forward.

Results Participation in the traditional employment market for people with disabilities who can and wish to work remains limited, even when workplace accommodations and individualized adjustments are possible. Increasingly, though, self-directed or independently contracted work is a way for people with disabilities to participate in the mainstream economy. The "gig economy," in particular, has provided additional opportunities for self-directed work, although the novel coronavirus pandemic has required existing approaches to be reconceived.     With increasing age, there was a trend towards patient having ASA ≥ 3 (from 32.1% to 60.9%, p < 0.0001), clear margins (from 80.4% to 88.3%, p = 0.2256), days of hospitalisation (from 9.5 ± 6.9 to 12 ± 8.0, p = 0.0003), days of ICU admission (from 2.3 ± 2.8 to 2.8 ± 12.9, p = 0.0790) and morbidity (from 39% to 58.5%, p = 0.0073). Cardiovascular complications and postoperative delirium increase with age. There was no significant difference in mortality across the three groups. Univariate and bivariate binary logistic regressions foutes are achievable with careful patient selection and appropriate perioperative management.

  • This article discusses clinical applications of three empirical articles published in the present issue of JPA, all focused on adolescent assessment in European countries. Both adolescent and non-American populations receive too little attention in the assessment literature, and these articles aim to address this problem, through research on trait reactance in Portuguese adolescents, reasons for self-harm in Portuguese adolescents, and application of the Roberts-2 with Italian adolescents. How these articles apply to actual clinical practice is discussed.Introduction Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has provided patients with relapsed/refractory B cell malignancies a new therapeutic option, but this class of therapeutics has not demonstrated consistent therapeutic benefit in solid tumors.Areas Covered Here we review the literature to identify numerous factors that contribute to this discrepancy, using pediatric cancers as a platform to understand these limitations. Study 2 cross-validated the factor structure of the SCS-Y with a second sample of youths (N = 402, Mage = 12.43). Study 3 found support for the test-retest reliability of the SCS-Y (N = 102, Mage = 12.52). The aim of this review was to evaluate the scientific literature to identify the impacts of resveratrol on the accumulation of AGEs. The literature was searched in the online databases, viz. PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, ProQuest, and Google Scholar until May 2019. From a total of 338 retrieved articles, 10 papers were eligible for the present analysis. Except one clinical trial, all studies were conducted on animals. All the included studies, except one, showed inhibitory effects of resveratrol on the accumulation of AGE or receptor for AGEs. The findings indicate that resveratrol is a potential protective agent against the accumulation of AGEs. The association between leptin and components of the fibrinolytic system was evaluated in a non-prespecified post hoc analysis of a placebo-controlled randomized, double-blind trial where the effect of the ACEi enalapril on fibrinolysis was tested. A total of 46 men and 37 women were randomized to treatment with enalapril or placebo after (median 12 months) an uncomplicated myocardial infarction. At baseline, the participants were stable and had no signs of congestive heart failure. Leptin and fibrinolytic variables (mass concentrations of PAI-1, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and tPA-PAI complex) were measured at baseline, and after 10 days, 6 months and 12 months. Enalapril treatment did not change leptin levels, which increased significantly during 1 year of follow-up (p = .007). Changes in leptin levels were strongly associated with changes of tPA mass (p = .001), tPA-PAI complex (p = .003) and of PAI-1 (p = .006) in men, but not in women. Leptin levels are not influenced by treatment with an ACEi.     This article discusses clinical applications of three empirical articles published in the present issue of JPA, all focused on adolescent assessment in European countries. Both adolescent and non-American populations receive too little attention in the assessment literature, and these articles aim to address this problem, through research on trait reactance in Portuguese adolescents, reasons for self-harm in Portuguese adolescents, and application of the Roberts-2 with Italian adolescents. How these articles apply to actual clinical practice is discussed.Introduction Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has provided patients with relapsed/refractory B cell malignancies a new therapeutic option, but this class of therapeutics has not demonstrated consistent therapeutic benefit in solid tumors.Areas Covered Here we review the literature to identify numerous factors that contribute to this discrepancy, using pediatric cancers as a platform to understand these limitations. We discuss an inability to target highly and homogenously expressed lineage-associated antigens due to risks of on-target off-tumor toxicity, T cell dysfunction related to T cell exhaustion and the suppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), and inefficient CAR T cell trafficking into solid tumors. Using state-of-the-art psychometric analyses ideal for examining multidimensional constructs like self-compassion-bifactor exploratory structural equation modeling (bifactor-ESEM)-findings supported the use of a general self-compassion score and six subscale scores. Study 2 cross-validated the factor structure of the SCS-Y with a second sample of youths (N = 402, Mage = 12.43). Study 3 found support for the test-retest reliability of the SCS-Y (N = 102, Mage = 12.52). Study 4 (N = 212, Mage = 12.18) established construct validity for the SCS-Y by demonstrating that SCS-Y scores were significantly associated with mindfulness, happiness, life-satisfaction, depression, resilience, and achievement goal orientation in expected directions. Resveratrol plays a potential role in relation to diabetes due to improving of hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation. The aim of this review was to evaluate the scientific literature to identify the impacts of resveratrol on the accumulation of AGEs. The literature was searched in the online databases, viz. PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, ProQuest, and Google Scholar until May 2019. From a total of 338 retrieved articles, 10 papers were eligible for the present analysis. Except one clinical trial, all studies were conducted on animals. All the included studies, except one, showed inhibitory effects of resveratrol on the accumulation of AGE or receptor for AGEs. The findings indicate that resveratrol is a potential protective agent against the accumulation of AGEs. Esophageal tissue samples of healthy controls were used for P2Y2R expression quantification. Two human esophageal cancer cell lines Kyse-450 (squamous cell carcinoma) and OE-33 (adenocarcinoma) were used to perform in vitro analysis of cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and the signaling pathways involved in P2Y2R activation. Data showed that P2Y2R was expressed in biopsies of patients with ESCC and adenocarcinoma, as well as in the two human esophageal cancer cell lines studied. The RT-qPCR analysis demonstrated that OE-33 cells have higher P2RY2 expression than Kyse-450 squamous cell line. Results showed that P2Y2R activation, induced by ATP or UTP, promoted esophageal cancer cells proliferation and colony formation. P2Y2R blockage with the selective antagonist, AR-C 118925XX, led to decreased proliferation, colony formation and adhesion. Treatments with ATP or UTP activated ERK 1/2 pathway in ESCC and ECA cells. The P2Y2R antagonism did not alter the migration of esophageal cancer cells. Interestingly, the esophageal cancer cell lines presented a distinct profile of nucleotide hydrolysis activity. Results show limited language variation, with speech-print convergence evident mostly in left frontotemporal perisylvian regions. Correlational and intersect analyses revealed subtle differences in the strength of this coupling in several regions of interest. Specifically, speech-print convergence was higher for transparent Polish than opaque English in the right temporal area, associated with phonological processing. Conversely, speech-print convergence was higher for English than Polish in left fusiform, associated with visual word recognition. We conclude that speech-print convergence is a universal marker of reading even at the beginning of reading acquisition with minor variations that can be explained by the differences in grapheme to phoneme transparency. This finding at the earliest stages of reading acquisition conforms well with claims that reading exhibits a good deal of universality despite writing systems differences.

However, many aspects of their unique life cycle and anatomy, including their mechanical properties, remain to be understood. Here, we compared the mechanical properties of the cuticle of the argasid tick Ornithodoros moubata to those of two species of ixodid tick, Amblyomma hebraeum and Ixodes pacificus that we explored in our earlier studies of the tick exoskeleton. Significant differences were expected given the substantial difference in life cycle, including a five-fold increase during the repeated adult blood meal for female O. moubata vs. 70- to 120-fold during the single feeding of the adult female A. hebraeum and I. pacificus. We demonstrate here that the layered structure and mechanical properties (stiffness and viscosity) of the cuticle show minor differences, but the difference in cuticle thickness is substantial. Ductility is lost during feeding; reduced pH restores ductility. Previous work suggests that this occurs in vivo in engorged ixodid ticks; there is no evidence of this occurring in vivo in O. moubata. Thinning of cuticle in O. moubata fed females is consistent with the predicted stretch of cuticle due to the blood meal; there is no evidence of cuticle synthesis during the short feeding period. Dimensional analysis suggests that the soft feel of argasid ticks is related to cuticle thickness, not cuticle stiffness. Relative to argasid ticks, the hard ixodid ticks accommodate a ca. 20-fold higher size of blood meal by starting with a thicker cuticle and growing **** additional cuticle during engorgement.Protothecosis refers to disease of humans and animals caused by infection with fungus-like, colourless microalgae of the genus Prototheca. Although protothecosis remains an uncommon infection, increasing numbers of human and animal cases are being diagnosed worldwide. This review summarises major new findings in basic science (sequencing analyses of sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51/ERG11) genes and organelle genomes of Prototheca wickerhamii) to elucidate taxonomic features of this pathogen. Furthermore, this review updates and summarises the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of protothecosis in dogs and cats.     This study aimed to investigate whether systemic therapy (ST) use surrounding radiation therapy (RT) predicts overall survival (OS) after RT for patients with brain metastases (BMs).

    Provincial RT and pharmacy databases were used to review all adult patients in British Columbia, Canada, who received a first course of RT for BMs between 2012 and 2016 (n = 3095). Multivariate analysis on a randomly selected subset was used to develop an OS nomogram.

    In comparison to the 2096 non-recipients of ST after RT, the median OS of the 999 recipients of ST after RT was 5.0 (95% Confidence interval (CI) 4.1-6.0) months longer (p < 0.0001). Some types of ST after RT were independently predictive of OS targeted therapy (hazard ratio (HR) 0.42, CI 0.37-0.48), hormone therapy (HR 0.45, CI 0.36-0.55), cytotoxic chemotherapy (HR 0.71, CI 0.64-0.79), and immunotherapy (HR 0.64, CI 0.37-1.06). Patients who discontinued ST after RT had 0.9 (CI 0.3-1.4) months shorter median OS than patients who received no ST before or after RT (p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis of the 220-patient subset, established prognostic variables (extracranial disease, performance status, age, cancer diagnosis, and number of BMs), and the novel variables "ST before RT" and "Type of ST after RT" independently predicted OS. The nomogram predicted 6- and 12-month OS probability and median OS (bootstrap-corrected Harrell's Concordance Index = 0.70).

The vanadium complex (40 mg kg) was administered orally twice every 3rd day 5 weeks, non-diabetic and diabetic control groups received distilled water whereas the insulin group received subcutaneous insulin injections twice daily for 5 weeks. Blood glucose concentrations, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate, triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol concentrations were monitored weekly for 5 weeks. Rats were then euthanised and blood and hearts were collected for biochemical analysis. There was a significant decrease in blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol concentrations as well as blood pressure of vanadium treated rats compared to the untreated diabetic animals. Vanadium treatment also attenuated cardiac oxidative stress and decreased the expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and Smad7. Lastly, the administration of the vanadium complex significantly decreased C reactive protein (CRP) and cardiotropin 1(CT-1) concentrations in the plasma and heart tissues. The administration of the dioxidovanadium(V) complex to diabetic rats culminated into cardio-protective effects. Taken together, these observations suggest that this metal complex exhibit a significant potential as an alternative therapeutic drug for DM management.

Although we found several interesting local species and allochthonous ticks like Hy. rufipes, Am. variegatum and Ar. vulgaris on birds, further investigations are needed to better define the possible role of migratory birds in the introduction of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Italy, above all after the evidence of imported ticks positive to Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus in several European countries.Ticks (Chelicerata, Ixodida) are blood-feeding ectoparasites believed to have evolved at least about 120 millions of years ago and found worldwide. However, many aspects of their unique life cycle and anatomy, including their mechanical properties, remain to be understood. Here, we compared the mechanical properties of the cuticle of the argasid tick Ornithodoros moubata to those of two species of ixodid tick, Amblyomma hebraeum and Ixodes pacificus that we explored in our earlier studies of the tick exoskeleton. Significant differences were expected given the substantial difference in life cycle, including a five-fold increase during the repeated adult blood meal for female O. moubata vs. 70- to 120-fold during the single feeding of the adult female A. hebraeum and I. pacificus. We demonstrate here that the layered structure and mechanical properties (stiffness and viscosity) of the cuticle show minor differences, but the difference in cuticle thickness is substantial. Ductility is lost during feeding; reduced pH restores ductility. Previous work suggests that this occurs in vivo in engorged ixodid ticks; there is no evidence of this occurring in vivo in O. moubata. Thinning of cuticle in O. moubata fed females is consistent with the predicted stretch of cuticle due to the blood meal; there is no evidence of cuticle synthesis during the short feeding period. Dimensional analysis suggests that the soft feel of argasid ticks is related to cuticle thickness, not cuticle stiffness. Some types of ST after RT were independently predictive of OS targeted therapy (hazard ratio (HR) 0.42, CI 0.37-0.48), hormone therapy (HR 0.45, CI 0.36-0.55), cytotoxic chemotherapy (HR 0.71, CI 0.64-0.79), and immunotherapy (HR 0.64, CI 0.37-1.06).     The objective of the study was to determine gender differences in mortality in patients with STEMI.

    Cohort study including patients with STEMI. We recorded demographic and clinical data, laboratory tests, and in-hospital mortality in patients who underwent primary angioplasty and pharmacoinvasive strategy. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess mortality differences between both genders.

    A total of 340 patients were analyzed, 296 males and 44 females. Mean age of the female group was 64.3 ± 12.3 years. About 98% of females were among Killip-Kimball Class I-II. They had higher risk scores compared to man, longer ischemic time and first medical contact with a difference in comparison to man of 47 and 60 min, respectively. Mortality was 9.1% (4) in the female group.

    Although the proportion of women had higher mortality than man, we did not found any difference with statistical significance probably due to the lack of representation.

    Transverse colon volvulus incidence is comparatively rare when compared to cecal and sigmoid volvulus. Its diagnosis is still challenging for the surgeon. Delay in the diagnosis of this condition carries high morbidity and mortality rates.

    To report a rare case of transverse colon volvulus in a young adult male that presented as large bowel obstruction and was operated upon in the General Surgery department in the Jordanian Royal Medical Services (JRMS), Amman, Jordan.

    An 18-year-old male presented with severe generalized abdominal pain of 12-h-duration, associated with significant abdominal distention and constipation of one-day duration. His abdominal examination revealed a massively distended, tender abdomen; however, there were no signs of peritonitis. Abdominal radiographs showed a massively dilated large bowel. He underwent exploratory laparotomy that revealed the diagnosis of transverse colon volvulus. His condition was managed operatively with transverse colectomy with a primary anastomosis. The patient had a satisfactory postoperative recovery.

    Only 3-5% of all cases of intestinal obstruction are caused by colonic volvulus. Transverse colon is involved in 2-4% of them. The diagnosis of transverse colon volvulus can be delayed and difficult because it does not have the same classically recognizable radiographic features as cecal and sigmoid volvulus.

    The patient initially consulted for pain in the mandibular left molar region. Primary investigations firstly showed a probably benign lesion but immunochemistry analysis finally revealed a squamous cell carcinoma arising in a dentigerous cyst. An extension assessment was performed and no evidence of lymph node extension or distant metastasis were found. A non-interrupting mandibular bone resection without neck dissection was realized. The patient made a good recovery after surgery without postoperative complication. No clinical symptoms or sign of local recurrence or metastasis was detected after 17 months follow-up.

    PIOC arising in a dentigerous cyst is a rare observation. PIOC from odontogenic cysts have an incident rate of 0,3 to 2% and only 16%-51% of them are PIOC from dentigerous cyst. There are no clinical or radiological pathognomonic characteristics. They often look like benign lesion and the diagnosis is often made fortuitously. A surgical excision with clear margin is the cornerstone of treatment. Clinical and radiological follow-up of the patient is recommended.

    The simultaneous occurrence of multiple primary malignancies in a patient has been widely reported. Oral mucosal malignant melanoma is a rare lesion of the oral cavity. The occurrence of this lesion with a very rare skin sarcoma at the same time has never to the best of our knowledge been reported previously.

    A 64 year-old Nigerian woman with a 27-year history of a dark lesion in the right maxillary buccal and palatal mucosa with an anterior abdominal swelling of 24 years which was discovered on systemic examination. Both lesions were later discovered to be malignant melanoma and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans respectively. She had a right hemimaxillectomy for the maxillary lesion and wide excision of the abdominal wall lesion, followed by six courses of chemotherapy. She has been undergoing regular reviews for the past 5 years and remains free of all malignancy; however, she died shortly after noticing the reappearance of both lesions.

    While evaluating patients with a tumor, it will be rewarding to rule out other similar swellings in the body. This is important to avoid metastasis or multiple primary malignancies, which can help prolong patient life.

An extension assessment was performed and no evidence of lymph node extension or distant metastasis were found. A non-interrupting mandibular bone resection without neck dissection was realized. The patient made a good recovery after surgery without postoperative complication. No clinical symptoms or sign of local recurrence or metastasis was detected after 17 months follow-up. The simultaneous occurrence of multiple primary malignancies in a patient has been widely reported. Oral mucosal malignant melanoma is a rare lesion of the oral cavity. The occurrence of this lesion with a very rare skin sarcoma at the same time has never to the best of our knowledge been reported previously. A 64 year-old Nigerian woman with a 27-year history of a dark lesion in the right maxillary buccal and palatal mucosa with an anterior abdominal swelling of 24 years which was discovered on systemic examination. Both lesions were later discovered to be malignant melanoma and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans respectively. She had a right hemimaxillectomy for the maxillary lesion and wide excision of the abdominal wall lesion, followed by six courses of chemotherapy. She has been undergoing regular reviews for the past 5 years and remains free of all malignancy; however, she died shortly after noticing the reappearance of both lesions. While evaluating patients with a tumor, it will be rewarding to rule out other similar swellings in the body. This is important to avoid metastasis or multiple primary malignancies, which can help prolong patient life. The synchronous occurrence of two different neoplastic lesions is rare. Our literature search revealed no previous report of such occurrence of oral malignant melanoma and DFSP at the same time in one patient.   • These activities have produced the theoretical framework that will be tested in real-life conditions through the support of case studies. The collaboration on implementing multisectoral activities against VBDs will continue among TDR, the Swiss Tropical Public Health Institute, and new partners such as the WHO Water Sanitation and Hygiene Group, UNDP, and UN-Habitat, in order to face the challenges identified and propose solutions tailored to specific contexts. The prevention and control of VBDs require strong and adapted MSAs with the full participation of all relevant sectors.
    Intersectoral collaboration in the context of the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases has been broadly described in both the literature and the current global strategy by the World Health Organization. Our aim was to develop a framework that will distill the currently known multiple models of collaboration.

    Qualitative content analysis and logic modeling of data abstracted from 69 studies included in a scoping review done by the authors were used to develop 9 recommendation statements that summarized the composition and attributes of multisectoral approaches, which were then subjected to a modified Delphi process with 6 experts in the fields of health policy and infectious diseases.

    Consensus for all statements was achieved during the first round. The recommendation statements were on (1-3) sectoral engagement to supplement government efforts and augment public financing; (4) development of interventions for most systems levels; (5-6) investment in human resource, including training; (7-8) intersectoral action to implement strategies and ensure sustainability of initiatives; and (9) research to support prevention and control efforts.

    Myanmar is a premalaria elimination country with artemisinin-resistant malaria. A strategy for transmission control is focused on vulnerable groups such as mobile and migrant populations (MMPs), and includes improving access to insecticide-treated bed nets in the Myanmar artemisinin resistance containment (MARC) zones using multisectoral approaches (MSA).

    This narrative systematic review addressed MSAs targeted to MMPs in Myanmar for malaria prevention. We searched relevant studies in electronic databases and present the narrative findings in 4 domains stakeholder groups, net coverage and utilization, social determinates, and facilitators/barriers.

    Nine studies were included. The review identified stakeholders involved in intersectoral collaboration. Net ownership was higher than utilization rates in the MARC zones and rates remained below the WHO recommended target of 100%. There was inadequate description of roles and responsibilities for implementation and on channels of communication within the partnerships and with the Government.

    Findings show that interventions to distribute treated bed nets were supported by the multiple stakeholders. Due to the design of the primary studies, analysis of the added value of intersectoral collaboration was limited. More attention must be paid to designing studies to document and evaluate the contributions and outcomes of intersectoral collaboration.

However, there is a strong business rationale for protecting local resident employees through integrated vector control programs, as well as an ethical responsibility to care for these individuals and the affected communities.   • A comprehensive discussion of the state-of-the-art methods for Federated Learning is provided along with an in-depth discussion on the applicability of Federated Learning in smart city sensing; clear insights on open issues, challenges, and opportunities in this field are provided as guidance for the researchers studying this subject matter.This study introduces an original concept in the development of hydrogel materials for controlled release of charged organic compounds based on semi-interpenetrating polymer networks composed by an inert gel-forming polymer component and interpenetrating linear polyelectrolyte with specific binding affinity towards the carried active compound. As it is experimentally illustrated on the prototype hydrogels prepared from agarose interpenetrated by poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and alginate (ALG), respectively, the main benefit brought by this concept is represented by the ability to tune the mechanical and transport performance of the material independently via manipulating the relative content of the two structural components. A unique analytical methodology is proposed to provide complex insight into composition-structure-performance relationships in the hydrogel material combining methods of analysis on the macroscopic scale, but also in the specific microcosms of the gel network. Rheological analysis has confirmed that the complex modulus of the gels can be adjusted in a wide range by the gelling component (agarose) with negligible effect of the interpenetrating component (PSS or ALG). Hydrogels have gained interest in the TE community because of their ability to absorb water similar to physiological tissues, thus mechanically simulating the ECM. In this work, we present a novel hydrogel platform based on poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)s, which can be processed to 3D microstructures via two-photon polymerization (2PP) with tunable mechanical properties using monomers and crosslinker with different degrees of polymerization (DP) for future applications in TE. The ideal parameters (laser power and writing speed) for optimal polymerization via 2PP were obtained using a specially developed evaluation method in which the obtained structures were binarized and compared to the computer-aided design (***) model. This evaluation was performed for each composition. We found that it was possible to tune the mechanical properties not only by application of different laser parameters but also by mixing poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)s with different chain lengths and variation of the crosslink density. In addition, the swelling behavior of different fabricated hydrogels were investigated. To gain more insight into the viscoelastic behavior of different fabricated materials, stress relaxation tests via nanoindentation experiments were performed.
