  • In recent years, total pancreatectomy has come to be expected good results by the progress of diabetes treatment and the development of pancreatic enzyme agents, it is necessary to carefully judge each case for adaptation.Whether the stomach should be preserved during total pancreatectomy(TP)is controversial. Therefore, we examined the correlation between stomach-preserving procedures on TP and postoperative gastric complications. Seven consecutive cases underwent TP(standard TP 1 case, SSPTP 3 cases, PPTP 3 cases)for pancreatic cancer during the time period 2011-2019 at our hospital. There was no clinical case of postoperative gastric ulcer nor bleeding. Delayed gastric emptying(DGE)was observed in 4 cases of Grade A and 2 cases of Grade C. One of the Grade C cases was considered to be secondary DGE due to postoperative intestinal necrosis. The other was SSPTP case whose left gastric artery(LGA)was ligated. The patient had difficulty of food intake after the surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy showed widespread hemorrhage and erosion of the gastric mucosa, considered to be ischemic gastropathy. Regarding primary DGE, most of cases were within Grade A even in stomach-preserving cases. Whereas, stomach-preserving procedure should be avoided when the LGA is ligated, because ischemic gastropathy may occur.Generally, the first treatment plan for anal canal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)is chemo-radiation therapy(CRT). We experienced an extremely rare surgery case of anal canal SCC after prostate brachytherapy. A man in his 70s who had undergone brachytherapy for prostate cancer 8 years before visited our hospital because of blood in feces. A tumor prolapsed from the anal verge, and biopsy revealed SCC. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed front-wall thickness in the lower rectum, but we could not evaluate it in detail because of the halation by brachytherapy seeds. We performed laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection to avoid an overdose of radiation for the rectum. Pathological staging was pT2N1aM0, pStage â…¢A. Pathological examination of the sigmoid colon tumor revealed well differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma and KRAS codon13 G13D. Hence, we diagnosed the patient with locally advanced appendiceal cancer with invasion to the bladder and sigmoid colon. We administered CAPOX plus bevacizumab as neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Contrast-enhanced abdominal CT after neoadjuvant chemotherapy revealed shrinkage of the primary tumor and reduction in the invasion to the bladder and sigmoid colon. We performed ileocecal resection(+D3), a partial sigmoidectomy, and partial bladder resection on the 135th day from the diagnosis. The resected specimen showed an appendiceal tumor with invasion to the bladder and sigmoid colon. This led to the identification of 55 HTS-responsive proteins (HRPs), which are predominantly involved in metabolism and defense pathways. Interestingly, HRPs included a 2-cysteine peroxiredoxin (2CP), designated Ta2CP, presumably involved in stress perception and adaptation. Complementation of Ta2CP in yeast and heterologous expression in Arabidopsis demonstrated its role in thermotolerance. Both Ta2CP silencing and overexpression inferred the involvement of Ta2CP in plant growth and chlorophyll biosynthesis. We demonstrated that Ta2CP interacts with protochlorophyllide reductase b, TaPORB. Reduced TaPORB expression was found in Ta2cp-silenced plants, while upregulation was observed in Ta2CP-overexpressed plants. Furthermore, the downregulation of Ta2CP in Taporb-silenced plants and reduction of protochlorophyllide in Ta2cp-silenced plants suggested the key role of Ta2CP in chlorophyll metabolism.     The purpose of the study was to assess participants' and presenters' perceptions of a live web-based lecture series in comparison to traditional in-person lectures.

    A virtual lecture series was organized by the---from March 25th until June 3rd of 2020. Twenty-five postgraduate prosthodontics programs and 81 presenters participated. Two surveys were developed and distributed to the audience (N = 330) and the presenters (N = 81). Follow-up emails were sent one week, three weeks, and four weeks after the initial email survey to encourage its completion. The data were analyzed descriptively. One-way ANOVA (p = 0.05), followed by a post hoc test, were used to compare the response percentages among the different generations of presenters and participants.

    Fifty-two percent of participants, and 65% of presenters, completed the survey. More than 96% of participants and presenters were satisfied with the lecture series. Seventy-nine percent of audience members felt that the live web-based lectures were as effective as traditional classroom lectures, or more effective; 32% of presenters agreed. Millennial audience members had significantly (p = 0.0028) more negative responses than the other generations.

    To develop a computer-driven and thus less user-dependent method, allowing for a simple and straightforward generation of a Monte Carlo (**) beam model of a scanned proton and carbon ion beam delivery system.

    In a first step, experimental measurements were performed for proton and carbon ion energies in the available energy ranges. Data included depth dose profiles measured in water and spot sizes in air at various isocenter distances. Using an automated regularization-based optimization process (AUTO-BEAM), GATE/Geant4 beam models of the respective beam lines were generated. These were obtained sequentially by using least square weighting functions with and without regularization, to iteratively tune the beam parameters energy, energy spread, beam sigma, divergence, and emittance until a user-defined agreement was reached. Based on the parameter tuning for a set of energies, a beam model was semi-automatically generated. The resulting beam models were validated for all centers comparing to independent mes possible within three working days. The number of iterations required for the optimization process to converge, was found to be similar for all beam line geometries and particle types.

    The presented method was demonstrated to work independently of the beam optics behavior of the different beam lines, particle types, and geometries. Herein, we report on the well-controlled shape evolution of pure-MOF microcrystals with optical waveguide and lasing performances based on a bottom-up and top-down synergistic method. The MOF microcrystals from solvothermal synthesis (bottom-up) enable the evolution from microrods via microtubes to nanowires through a chelating agent-assisted etching process (top-down). The three types of MOF 1D-microstructures with high crystallinity and smooth surfaces all exhibit efficient optical waveguide performance. Furthermore, MOF nanowire with lowest propagation loss served as low-threshold pure-MOF nanolasers with Fabry-Pérot resonance. These results advance the fundamental understanding on the controlled MOF evolution mechanism, and offer a valuable route for the development of pure-MOF-based photonic components with desired functionalities.

    Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) adversely impacts renal function, and E/e' is a significant predictor of adverse kidney events under different clinical conditions. However, no studies have evaluated the association between LVDD and septic acute kidney injury (AKI) among patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.

    This multicenter retrospective study evaluated adult patients with severe sepsis or septic shock between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2019, who underwent echocardiography within 24 hours after admission to an intensive care unit.

    A total of 495 adult patients were enrolled in the study. LVDD grades II and III were associated with severe (stage 3) AKI (

    One hundred and twenty child and adolescent drug-naïve outpatients (6-15 years of age) with a primary diagnosis of ADHD were included. Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL), was used to evaluate ADHD and comorbidities. Parents filled in clinical and sociodemographic data form, Conners Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) and patients filled in Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES) and Çapa Social Phobia Scale for children and adolescents (ÇESFÖ).

A total of 495 adult patients were enrolled in the study. LVDD grades II and III were associated with severe (stage 3) AKI (  < 0.001, for trend < 0.001). E/e' and e' were risk factors for septic AKI (OR, 1.155; 95% CI, 1.088-1.226,  < 0.001; and OR, 7.218; 95% CI, 2.942-17.712,  < 0.001, respectively) in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. It can be used for behavioral phenotyping of murine models of different disorders. The USVs are usually recorded with a microphone sensitive to ultrasound frequencies and they are analyzed by specific software. Different calls typologies exist, and each ultrasonic call can be manually classified, but the qualitative analysis is highly time-consuming. Considering this framework, in this work we proposed and evaluated a set of supervised learning methods for automatic USVs classification. This could represent a sustainable procedure to deeply analyze the ultrasonic communication, other than a standardized analysis. We used manually built datasets obtained by segmenting the USVs audio tracks analyzed with the Avisoft software, and then by labelling each of them into 10 representative classes. For the automatic classification task, we designed a Convolutional Neural Network that was trained receiving as input the spectrogram images associated to the segmented audio files. In addition, we also tested some other supervised learning algorithms, such as Support Vector Machine, Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptrons, exploiting informative numerical features extracted from the spectrograms. The performance showed how considering the whole time/frequency information of the spectrogram leads to significantly higher performance than considering a subset of numerical features. In the authors' opinion, the experimental results may represent a valuable benchmark for future work in this research field.Giardia duodenalis is an enteric parasite commonly detected in children. Exposure to this organism may lead to asymptomatic or symptomatic infection. Additionally, early-life infections by this protozoan have been associated with impaired growth and cognitive function in poor resource settings. The Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) in Mozambique demonstrated that G. duodenalis was more frequent among controls than in diarrhoeal cases (≥3 loosing stools in the previous 24 hours). However, no molecular investigation was conducted to ascertain the molecular variability of the parasite. Therefore, we describe here the frequency and genetic diversity of G. duodenalis infections in children younger than five years of age with and without diarrhoea from the Manhiça district in southern Mozambique enrolled in the context of GEMS. Genomic DNA from 757 G. duodenalis-positive stool samples by immunoassay collected between 2007-2012, were reanalysed by multiplex PCR targeting the E1-HP and C1-P21 genes for the diffetic diversity of the parasite remains unknown.The mechanisms and design principles of regulatory systems establishing stable polarized protein patterns within cells are well studied. However, cells can also dynamically control their cell polarity. Here, we ask how an upstream signaling system can switch the orientation of a polarized pattern. We use a mathematical model of a core polarity system based on three proteins as the basis to study different mechanisms of signal-induced polarity switching. The analysis of this model reveals four general classes of switching mechanisms with qualitatively distinct behaviors the transient oscillator switch, the reset switch, the prime-release switch, and the push switch. Each of these regulatory mechanisms effectively implements the function of a spatial toggle switch, however with different characteristics in their nonlinear and stochastic dynamics. Understanding the factors that determine the genome-wide distribution of TOP2B is therefore not only essential for a complete knowledge of genome dynamics and organization, but also for the implications of TOP2-induced DSBs in the origin of oncogenic translocations and other types of chromosomal rearrangements. Here, we conduct a machine-learning approach for the prediction of TOP2B binding using publicly available sequencing data. We achieve highly accurate predictions, with accessible chromatin and architectural factors being the most informative features. Strikingly, TOP2B is sufficiently explained by only three features DNase I hypersensitivity, CTCF and cohesin binding, for which genome-wide data are widely available. Based on this, we develop a predictive model for TOP2B genome-wide binding that can be used across cell lines and species, and generate virtual probability tracks that accurately mirror experimental ChIP-seq data.

  • When waste management infrastructure is built, there can be resistance from the local affected populations, often termed the Not in My Backyard (NIMBY) phenomenon. This study aims to understand the forms of resistance that may develop in such contexts, focusing on 2 solid waste and 1 liquid waste management site within Mzuzu City, Malawi. At the newest solid waste site, community resistance had grown to the extent that the site was reportedly destroyed by the local community. Interviews and observations of the sites are complemented by examining historic and recent satellite images. It was found that, at the new solid waste site, community engagement had not been conducted effectively prior to construction and as part of ongoing site operations. This was compounded by poor site management and the non-delivery of the promised benefits to the community. In contrast, at the liquid waste site, the community could access untreated sludge for use as fertilizer and were happier to live within its vicinity. While NIMBYism is a frustrating phenomenon for city planners, it is understandable that communities want to protect their health and well-being when there is a history of mismanagement of waste sites which is sadly common in low-income settings. It is difficult for government agencies to deliver these services and broader waste management. In this study, an unsuccessful attempt to do something better with a legitimate goal is not necessarily a failure, but part of a natural learning process for getting things right.

    This study aimed at assessing health symptoms among populations living near an oil refinery in Jordan.

    A cross-sectional survey study was conducted utilizing convenient random sampling at Al-Hashimeya town (where the refinery is located) and Bal'ma town (about 12 km further away from refinery). A total of 486 participants were recruited for the study. The data were checked, coded, and entered to excel sheet and exported to the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20 for further analysis. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify associated factors. Variables having a
     ⩽ 0.25 were fitted to multivariate logistic regression so as to assess the presence and strength of associations between socio-demographic characteristics and health symptoms and outcomes. A

This study was conducted to assess the magnitude of errors in the total testing process of Clinical Chemistry Laboratory and to evaluate analytical quality control using sigma metrics.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted at Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Clinical Chemistry Laboratory, Northeast Ethiopia, from 10 February 2020 to 10 June 2020. All Clinical Chemistry Laboratory test requests with their respective samples, external quality control and all daily internal quality control data during the study period were included in the study. Data were collected using a prepared checklist and analyzed using SPSS version 21.

    A total of 4719 blood samples with their test requests were included in the study. Out of 145,383 quality indicators, an error rate of 22,301 (15.3%) was identified in the total testing process. Of the total errors, 76.3% were pre-analytical, 2.1% were analytical and 21.6% were post-analytical errors (p<0.0001). Of the total 14 analytes in the sigma metric evaluation, except ALP, all routine clinical chemistry tests were below the standard (<3). In multivariate logistic regression, the location of patients in the inpatient department was significantly associated with the specimen rejection ((AOR=1.837, 95% CI (1.288-2.618), p=0.001).

    When waste management infrastructure is built, there can be resistance from the local affected populations, often termed the Not in My Backyard (NIMBY) phenomenon. This study aims to understand the forms of resistance that may develop in such contexts, focusing on 2 solid waste and 1 liquid waste management site within Mzuzu City, Malawi. At the newest solid waste site, community resistance had grown to the extent that the site was reportedly destroyed by the local community. Interviews and observations of the sites are complemented by examining historic and recent satellite images. It was found that, at the new solid waste site, community engagement had not been conducted effectively prior to construction and as part of ongoing site operations. This was compounded by poor site management and the non-delivery of the promised benefits to the community. In contrast, at the liquid waste site, the community could access untreated sludge for use as fertilizer and were happier to live within its vicinity. While NIMBYism is a frustrating phenomenon for city planners, it is understandable that communities want to protect their health and well-being when there is a history of mismanagement of waste sites which is sadly common in low-income settings. It is difficult for government agencies to deliver these services and broader waste management. Out of 145,383 quality indicators, an error rate of 22,301 (15.3%) was identified in the total testing process. Of the total errors, 76.3% were pre-analytical, 2.1% were analytical and 21.6% were post-analytical errors (p<0.0001). Of the total 14 analytes in the sigma metric evaluation, except ALP, all routine clinical chemistry tests were below the standard (<3). In the silkworm, Bombyx mori, there are strains that molt three, four, or five times, and these numbers are determined by allelic variation at a single autosomal locus, Moltinism (M).6-9 Here, we demonstrate that the Hox gene Sex combs reduced (Scr) is responsible for the phenotypes of the M locus. Scr is selectively expressed in the larval prothoracic gland (PG), an endocrine organ that produces molting hormones.2Scr represses the biosynthesis of molting hormones in the PG, thereby regulating the incremental increase in body size during each larval instar. Our experiments consistently suggest that the differential expression levels of Scr among the three M alleles result in different growth ratios that ultimately lead to the different number of larval molts.     The purpose of this study was to determine whether ease of access to alcohol at the neighborhood level moderates the impact of familial liability and marital status on risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD).

    Individuals in Sweden were divided into those residing in a neighborhood with (n = 14.1%) versus without (n = 85.9%) an alcohol outlet (bars/nightclubs or government stores). AUD was detected through national medical, legal, and pharmacy registries. Using an additive model predicting AUD registration over 5 years in 1,624,814 individuals, we tested for interactions between the presence of outlets in the individuals' neighborhoods and familial risk for externalizing syndromes and marital status.

    In both males and females, we found positive and significant interactions in the prediction of AUD between the presence versus absence of a nearby alcohol outlet with (a) familial risk and (b) single and divorced versus married status. Similar but nonsignificant interactions were seen between nearby outlets and widowed versus married status. These results changed little when all cases with prior AUD were removed from the sample. For males, most of the interaction arose from the proximity of bars/nightclubs, whereas for females the results varied across different kinds of outlets.

The current theoretically based investigation aimed to test developmental gene-environment interaction (G×E) effects across adolescence.

    Latent growth curve models tested interactive associations of polygenic risk scores and adolescents' perceived friend drinking and disruptive behavior with adolescents' initial level of alcohol use frequency at age 16 years old and change in alcohol frequency from ages 16 to 20. The sample comprised 8,941 White adolescents (49% female) from Great Britain within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

    Women in families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) cash assistance are twice as likely to have a substance use disorder (SUD) than their non-TANF counterparts in the past year. However, evidence is limited about substance misuse patterns and comorbid mental health problems among women in TANF families.

    Data from the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were used to examine the prevalence of substance misuse and use disorders among women age 18 or older in TANF families. We used latent class analysis to identify subgroups of distinctive substance misuse behaviors and tested the associations between SUD/serious psychological distress (SPD) and the group classification.

    Despite higher odds of having an SUD in all substance categories than their non-TANF counterparts, more than 84% of the women in TANF families were considered to have low substance misuse risks.   • To study the long-term outcome after surgery for pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect (PA-VSD), and to determine association between the contribution of major aorto-pulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs) to the pulmonary blood flow, comorbidity and cause of death.

    Patients who had undergone surgery for PA-VSD from January 1st 1994 to December 31st 2017 were studied retrospectively. Survival was cross-checked against the Swedish National Population Register.

    Seventy patients were identified, giving an incidence of 5.3 newborns per 100000 live births. In 41 patients (59%) the pulmonary blood flow originated from a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), while 29 patients (41%) had contribution of the pulmonary blood flow from MAPCAs. Extracardiac disease was found in 34 patients (49%), 16 of whom had 22q11-microdeletion syndrome (23%). Survival at follow-up was similar in patients with and without MAPCAs (72.4% vs. 75.6%, n.s.), with a median follow-up time of 14.3years (3.2-41.8years). No difference was found in mortality in patients with or without any syndrome or extracardiac disease.

In this study, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with multivariate statistical analysis was applied to characterize the chemical profiles of the differently processed Gardeniae Fructus products and to determine differences in their chemical compositions, thereby enabling us to identify those active compounds associated with the observed clinical effects. A total of 125 compounds were accordingly identified, among which, 56 were established as primary contributors to the significant differences (P less then 0.01) between crude and processed Gardeniae Fructus, based on t-test analysis. Furthermore, the potential mechanisms underlying the chemical transformations that occurred during processing were discussed. Because overloading in preparative liquid chromatography must be performed to increase the throughput in a cycle, nonlinear chromatographic behavior is observed. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully study nonlinear chromatography for the purification of a given product, which facilitates the efficient optimization of the purification parameters. In this work, a method for the development of a purification method using preparative liquid chromatography based on nonlinear chromatography is proposed. Hydroxytyrosol was selected as the subject for method demonstration. Using methanol and ethanol as organic modifiers, the optimum flow rate was determined on three commercial columns entitled C8 TDE, C18 ME, and C18 TDE, respectively. The curves were fitted with the van Deemter equation, with thorough analysis of the A, B, and C terms. Adsorption isotherms were subsequently studied to explore the distribution of solutes between the stationary and mobile phases at equilibrium. C18 TDE, 5 vol% ethanol-water, and 0.2 mL/min were selected as the optimal separation material, elution solvent, and flow rate, respectively. Purification of hydroxytyrosol was tentatively confirmed on a C18 TDE column with 1.6% sample loading, 90.98% recovery, and 98.01% purity.

Using methanol and ethanol as organic modifiers, the optimum flow rate was determined on three commercial columns entitled C8 TDE, C18 ME, and C18 TDE, respectively. The curves were fitted with the van Deemter equation, with thorough analysis of the A, B, and C terms. Adsorption isotherms were subsequently studied to explore the distribution of solutes between the stationary and mobile phases at equilibrium.   • Following surgical resection of oligometastatic disease to the brain there is a high rate of local relapse which is reduced by the addition of focal radiation therapy, often delivered as single fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to the surgical cavity. This study audited the outcomes of an alternative approach using hypofractionated radiation therapy (HFRT) to the surgical resection cavity.

    Seventy-nine patients who received surgical resection and focal radiation therapy to the surgical cavity using HFRT with intensity modulated radiation therapy with or without stereotactic radiotherapy were identified. Doses were delivered in five fractions every second day for 10days. Follow-up involved MRI surveillance with three-monthly MRI scans post resection. The major endpoints were local control at the surgical cavity site, and presence of radiation necrosis at the treated site.

    Seventy-nine patients were included for the analysis with a median follow-up of 10.8months. Of the cohort, 56% experienced intracranial progression, with all patients progressing distant to the resection cavity, and 7% progressing locally in addition. The one-year local control rate was 89.8%. The median progression-free survival was 10.0months and median overall survival was 14.3months. There was one CTCAE grade 3 toxicity of symptomatic radiation necrosis with no grade 4-5 toxicities seen.

No significant differences in treatment recommendation were observed between surgery and nonsurgical management (relative risk, 1.1; 95% CI, 0.97-1.25) when comparing votes from the surgeon and nonsurgeon cohorts. Multinomial logistic regression showed the odds of nonsurgeons recommending nonsurgical management over surgery was 20% greater than receiving that recommendation from their surgeon colleagues. Individual surgeon and nonsurgeon voters were evenly distributed above and below the mean for treatment recommendation. Individual and group biases exist among surgeons and nonsurgeons treating degenerative spine diseases.     At L5-S1, anterior access can be performed with a supine anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) or lateral position oblique lumbar interbody fusion (LOLIF). We compared clinical and radiographic features of both approaches.

    A retrospective study of L5-S1 ALIF and LOLIF patients (2013-2018) by 3 spine surgeons and a vascular surgeon at our hospital was performed. Inclusion criteria were patients undergoing L5-S1 anterior surgery only without other anterior or lateral fusion levels, and data collected were patient demographics, cage parameters, perioperative variables, and radiographic parameters. 58 patients were included (33 ALIF and 25 LOLIF).

    The average surgical time was 211.94min for ALIF and 154.86min for LOLIF (p<0.001). The average blood loss was 214ml for ALIF and 74ml for LOLIF (p<0.001). The average number of days to solid food was 2.55 for ALIF and 0.8 for LOLIF (p<0.001).     At baseline (M age 22 months), 136 children from Bucharest, Romania, living in large institutions, were randomized into foster care (FCG) or to care as usual (CAUG). Caregivers completed psychiatric interviews regarding their children (52 FCG; 51 CAUG) at age 16 years (M = 16.67 years; SD = 0.78) to assess past year diagnoses and symptom counts. In addition, never-institutionalized community comparison children (n = 47) were included.

    Ever-institutionalized children had higher rates of meeting criteria for any psychiatric disorder and higher symptom counts of internalizing, externalizing, attention-deficit/hyperactivity, and substance use disorders compared to never-institutionalized children (ps < .05). Using intent-to-treat analyses, we found that children in the CAUG had more than twice the rate of psychiatric disorders than children in the FCG (OR = 2.48, 95 associated with significant risks for psychopathology. Moreover, we provide causal evidence for the long-lasting positive effect of foster care in reducing the risk of psychopathology in adolescence, especially among those in stable placements.   • To compare botulinum neurotoxin (BNT) injections to surgery as first-line therapy in large-angle essential infantile esotropia (IE).

    Children between the ages 6 months and 6 years with IE of ≥40 prism dioptres (PD) were randomised to either a maximum of three BNT injections or surgical intervention of bimedial rectus muscle recession for angles ≤60 PD and augmented with BNT injection in angles >60 PD. Time taken for each procedure was documented. Orthophoria or misalignment of ≤10 PD was regarded as a complete response (CR). Follow-up visits were done at 3, 6, 12 and 24 weeks.

    Mean (SD) age and baseline angle of esotropia were 26.9 (14.5) months and 61.9 PD (12.8), respectively, for the overall cohort. The proportion of children who achieved CR was significantly higher in the surgery arm compared to the BNT injection arm (OR = 4.01, 95% CI 1.74-9.22) but the time taken was six times longer (p < 0.0001). In the BNT arm, 55.2% of children aged ≤24 months and 16% of children >24 months achieved CR. In children with esotropia ≤60 PD, CR was achieved in 50% while those with esotropia >60 PD CR was achieved in 25%.

    A retrospective case series of all patients with acutely infected/inflamed eyes undergoing urgent orbital evisceration with primary implants, at a British tertiary centre between January 2006 and August 2018. A systematic literature review of orbital eviscerations with primary implant placement in acute endophthalmitis/infection and recent trauma.

    Twenty-six eyes were eviscerated in the context of acute infection/inflammation. Twenty-four eyes had primary orbital implants. Indications for evisceration included endophthalmitis (18/26, 69%), microbial keratitis with corneal perforation (4/26, 15%), non-infectious corneal perforation (3/26, 12%), and recent trauma (1/26, 4.8%). The implants used were acrylic (15/24, 63%), MEDPOR (5/24, 21%), and silicone (4/24, 17%). The follow-up period was 15 months to 14 years. Implant exposure occurred in two (8.3%), managed with implant exchange and scleral reformation in one, and implant removal with dermis fat grafting in the other. Here, by comparing Arabidopsis wild-type, stn7 and tap38 plants with the psal mutant, which undergoes dynamic thylakoid stacking but lacks state transitions, we explain their distinct roles. Under low light, smaller grana increase the rate of PSI reduction and photosynthesis by reducing the diffusion distance for plastoquinol; however, this beneficial effect is only apparent when PSI/PSII excitation balance is maintained by state transitions or far-red light. Under high light, the larger grana slow plastoquinol diffusion and lower the equilibrium constant between plastocyanin and PSI, maximizing photosynthesis by avoiding PSI photoinhibition. Loss of state transitions in low light or maintenance of smaller grana in high light also both bring about a decrease in cyclic electron transfer and over-reduction of the PSI acceptor side. Insulin gene expression was elevated in beta cells with higher mtDNA gene expression in humans and in young ****. Such human beta cell populations also diverged in mitochondrial RNA mutational repertoire, and in their selective signature, thus implying the existence of two previously overlooked distinct and conserved beta cell populations. While applying our approach to human alpha cells, two sub-populations of cells were identified which diverged in mtDNA gene expression, yet these cellular populations did not consistently diverge in nDNA OXPHOS genes expression, nor did they correlate with the expression of glucagon, the hallmark of alpha cells.
