The objective was to investigate the association of coiling with hypertension, carotid artery atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS A case control study was performed in patients suspected of stroke, with (cases) or without (controls) coiling of the ICA determined on compute tomography angiography (CTA). Baseline characteristics included age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, smoking and hypercholesterolemia. Coiling of the ICA and atherosclerotic plaque at the carotid bifurcation were assessed on CTA. Logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS Coiling was identified in 108 patients with a median age of 71 years. Cases were compared with 256 controls with a median age of 69 years. Hypertension was present in 63% of the patients with coiling compared to 51% in the control group. Univariable analysis showed that hypertension was significantly associated with coiling, with an odds ratio of 1.65 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-2.61, p = 0.034). https://www.selleckchem.com/Proteasome.html Multivariable analysis corrected for age and sex resulted in an odds ratio of 1.71 (95% CI 1.05-2.80, p = 0.032), while correcting for atherosclerotic plaque at the bifurcation yielded an odds ratio of 1.63 (95% CI 1.00-2.66, p = 0.049). While the majority of the lipidomics work is being performed in mammalian and other eukaryotic systems, there is also a growing rise in the exploration of bacterial lipidomics. The lipids found in bacteria can be substantially different from those in eukaryotic systems, but they are equally important for maintaining the structure of the bacteria and providing protection from the surrounding environment. In this article, recent applications of lipidomics in combination with molecular biology and applications in microbial strain identification and antibiotic susceptibility are highlighted. The authors' perspectives on current challenges facing the field and future directions are also provided.Microfluidic applications such as active particle sorting or selective enrichment require particle classification techniques that are capable of working in real time. In this paper, we explore the use of neural networks for fast label-free particle characterization during microfluidic impedance cytometry. A recurrent neural network is designed to process data from a novel impedance chip layout for enabling real-time multiparametric analysis of the measured impedance data streams. As demonstrated with both synthetic and experimental datasets, the trained network is able to characterize with good accuracy size, velocity, and cross-sectional position of beads, red blood cells, and yeasts, with a unitary prediction time of 0.4 ms. The proposed approach can be extended to other device designs and cell types for electrical parameter extraction. This combination of microfluidic impedance cytometry and machine learning can serve as a stepping stone to real-time single-cell analysis and sorting. Using transcriptome and global Serine Threonine Kinase activity (STK) analyses of islets from newborn (10 days old) and adult rats, we found that highly proliferative neonatal rat islet cells display a substantially elevated activity of the mitogen activated protein 3 kinase 12, also called dual leucine zipper-bearing kinase (Dlk). As a key upstream component of the c-Jun amino terminal kinase (Jnk) pathway, Dlk overexpression was associated with increased Jnk3 activity and was mainly localized in the beta-cell cytoplasm. We provide the evidence that Dlk associates with and activates Jnk3, and that this cascade stimulates the expression of Ccnd1 and Ccnd2, two essential cyclins controlling postnatal beta-cell replication. Silencing of Dlk or of Jnk3 in neonatal islet cells dramatically hampered primary beta-cell replication and the expression of the two cyclins. Moreover, the expression of Dlk,Jnk3,Ccnd1 and Ccnd2 was induced in high replicative islet beta cells from ob/ob **** during weight gain, and from pregnant female rats. In human islets from non-diabetic obese individuals, DLK expression was also cytoplasmic and the rise of the mRNA level was associated with an increase of JNK3,CCND1andCCND2 mRNA levels, when compared to islets from lean and obese patients with diabetes. In conclusion, we find that activation of Jnk3 signalling by Dlk could be a key mechanism for adapting islet beta-cell mass during postnatal development and weight gain.

In conclusion, we should pay more attention to the protection of boys and school-aged children in our future public health protection and give more attention to those cold spells that last longer. Therefore, we recommend that schools and health authorities need to take targeted measures to reduce the risk of asthma in children during the cold spell.Lombardy, the most populated and industrialized Italian region, was the epicentre of the first wave (March and April 2020) of COVID-19 in Italy and it is among the most air polluted areas of Europe. We carried out an ecological study to assess the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on COVID-19 incidence and all-cause mortality after accounting for demographic, socioeconomic and meteorological variables. The study was based on publicly available data. Multivariable negative binomial mixed regression models were fitted, and results were reported in terms of incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and standardized mortality ratios (SMR). The effect of winter temperature and humidity was modelled through restricted cubic spline. Data from 1439 municipalities out of 1507 (95%) were included in the analyses, leading to a total of 61,377 COVID-19 cases and 40,401 deaths from all-causes collected from February 20th to April 16th and from March 1st to April 30th, 2020, respectively. Several demographic and socioeconomic variables resulted significantly associated with COVID-19 incidence and all-cause mortality in a multivariable fashion. An increase in average winter temperature was associated with a nonlinear decrease in COVID-19 incidence and all-cause mortality, while an opposite trend emerged for the absolute humidity. An increase of 10 μg/m3 in the mean annual concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 over the previous years was associated with a 58% and 34% increase in COVID-19 incidence rate, respectively. Similarly, a 10 μg/m3 increase of annual mean PM2.5 concentration was associated with a 23% increase in all-cause mortality. An inverse association was found between NO2 levels and COVID-19 incidence and all-cause mortality. The effects of the crystal phases of the zirconia in the structure of the nanocomposites were played a key role in the adsorption performances of the 3-NHPAA. Experiment data identified the nanocomposites with monoclinic phase of zirconia excelled at the adsorption of the 3-NHPAA with a higher adsorption capacity up to 207.2 mg g-1. The uptake of the 3-NHPAA by the three nanocomposites was implemented within 60 min and highly pH-dependent which illustrated electrostatic attraction between them as a main mechanism during the adsorption process. A wider pH range (3.8-8.8) for the uptake of the 3-NHPAA by the nanocomposites with the monoclinic phase of zirconia was obtained compared with the nanocomposites containing tetragonal phase (3.8-5.9) or the mixed phase (3.8-7.1) of zirconia. To date, an increasing number of potential miRNA biomarkers have been reported, but their practical application prospects are still unclear. Therefore, microRNAs, as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in a variety of diseases, need to be updated, as they are of great importance in the diagnosis, prognosis and prediction of therapeutic responses. Accurate neuroimaging plays a central role for radiotherapy planning and follow-up after radiotherapy completion. In order to maximize the radiation dose to the tumor and to minimize toxic effects on the surrounding brain parenchyma, reliable identification of tumor extent and target volume delineation is crucial. The use of PET for radiotherapy planning and monitoring in gliomas has gained considerable interest over the last several years, but Class I data are not yet available. Furthermore, PET has been used after radiotherapy for response assessment and to distinguish tumor progression from pseudoprogression or radiation necrosis. Here, the RANO working group provides a summary of the literature and recommendations for the use of PET imaging for radiotherapy of patients with glioma based on published studies, constituting levels 1-3 evidence according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine.
    Research on muscle performance testing reliability in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) has focused on limb performance while less is known about trunk strength and endurance. This work aims to 1) establish test-retest reliability of trunk flexion, lateral flexion, and extension strength tests, and plank, side bridge, and Biering-Sørensen endurance tests in people with MS and matched healthy controls (HCs); 2) analyze known-groups validity of these tests in people with MS and HCs; 3) to compare groups for side-to-side differences; and 4) to describe the relationships between trunk performance and functional mobility tests.

    Fifteen people with MS (median Expanded Disability Status Scale=3) and 15 HCs underwent 2 trunk isometric strength and endurance testing sessions. Mobility was evaluated by Timed Up-and-Go test. Intraclass correlation coefficient, SEM, and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated. Between-group differences in trunk performance were tested using the ttest for independent measure.New approach methodologies (NAMs) that efficiently provide information about chemical hazard without using whole animals are needed to accelerate the pace of chemical risk assessments. Technological advancements in gene expression assays have made in vitro high-throughput transcriptomics (HTTr) a feasible option for NAMs-based hazard characterization of environmental chemicals. In this study, we evaluated the Templated Oligo with Sequencing Readout (TempO-Seq) assay for HTTr concentration-response screening of a small set of chemicals in the human-derived MCF7 cell model. Our experimental design included a variety of reference samples and reference chemical treatments in order to objectively evaluate TempO-Seq assay performance. To facilitate analysis of these data, we developed a robust and scalable bioinformatics pipeline using open-source tools. We also developed a novel gene expression signature-based concentration-response modeling approach and compared the results to a previously implemented workflow for concentration-response analysis of transcriptomics data using BMDExpress. Analysis of reference samples and reference chemical treatments demonstrated highly reproducible differential gene expression signatures. The use of PET for radiotherapy planning and monitoring in gliomas has gained considerable interest over the last several years, but Class I data are not yet available. Furthermore, PET has been used after radiotherapy for response assessment and to distinguish tumor progression from pseudoprogression or radiation necrosis. Research on muscle performance testing reliability in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) has focused on limb performance while less is known about trunk strength and endurance. This work aims to 1) establish test-retest reliability of trunk flexion, lateral flexion, and extension strength tests, and plank, side bridge, and Biering-Sørensen endurance tests in people with MS and matched healthy controls (HCs); 2) analyze known-groups validity of these tests in people with MS and HCs; 3) to compare groups for side-to-side differences; and 4) to describe the relationships between trunk performance and functional mobility tests. Fifteen people with MS (median Expanded Disability Status Scale=3) and 15 HCs underwent 2 trunk isometric strength and endurance testing sessions. Mobility was evaluated by Timed Up-and-Go test.   • Femtosecond-laser ionization mass spectrometry (fs-LIMS) is demonstrated to be a powerful analytical method providing access to the qualitative distinction of structural isomers of ortho-, meta-, and para-fluorotoluene. The key point of the approach presented is a systematic variation of the spectral phase of the fs-laser pulses, which characteristically affects the fragmentation pattern observed in the mass spectra. Variation of the linear chirp parameter is also helpful for rationalizing the fragmentation mechanism. Ultimately two ternary mixtures of the three title isomers are quantitatively analyzed in situ with an accuracy of 5% for the molar fractions.Chiral surfaces are of growing interest for enantioselective adsorption and reactions. While metal surfaces can be prepared with a wide range of chiral surface orientations, chiral oxide surface preparation is more challenging. We demonstrate the chirality of a metal surface can be used to direct the homochiral growth of a thin film chiral oxide. Specifically, we study the chiral "29" copper oxide, formed by oxidizing a Cu(111) single crystal at 650 K. This offers a general approach for making chiral oxide surfaces via oxidation of an appropriately "miscut" metal surface.Compressible and ultralight all-carbon materials are promising candidates for piezoresistive pressure sensors. Although several fabrication methods have been developed, the required elasticity and fatigue resistance of all-carbon materials are yet to be satisfied as a result of energy loss and structure-derived fatigue failure. Herein, we present a two-stage solvothermal freeze-casting approach to fabricate all-carbon aerogel [modified graphene aerogel (MGA)] with a multi-arched structure, which is enabled by the in-depth solvothermal reduction of graphene oxide and unidirectional ice-crystal growth. MGA exhibits supercompressibility and superelasticity, which can resist an extreme compressive strain of 99% and maintain 93.4% height retention after 100 000 cycles at the strain of 80%. Rebound experiments reveal that MGA can rebound the ball (367 times heavier than the aerogel) in 0.02 s with a very fast recovery speed (∼615 mm s-1). Even if the mass ratio between the ball and aerogel is increased to 1306, the ball can be rebound in a relatively short time (0.04 s) with a fast recovery speed (∼535 mm s-1). As a result of its excellent mechanical robustness and electrical conductivity, MGA presents a stable stress-current response (10 000 cycles), tunable linear sensitivity (9.13-7.29 kPa-1), and low power consumption (4 mW). The MGA-based wearable pressure sensor can monitor human physiological signals, such as pulses, sound vibrations, and muscular movements, demonstrating its potential practicability as a wearable device.A range of methyl 2-fluorocyanoester derivatives were synthesized from dimethyl 2-fluoromalonate ester, and their efficacy as additives in lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrolytes was determined. The role played by the 2-fluorocyanoester additives on battery performance was explored by linear sweep cyclic voltammetry, NMR, GCMS, and XPS techniques. For all fluorocyanoester additives studied, initial reduction of the carbonyl group occurs which is then followed by formation of the corresponding radical anion. Possible degradation routes arising from loss of fluoride ion, loss of methyl radicals, and cleavage of the αβ carbon-carbon bond were observed, and all affect battery performance. Electrode protection upon addition of fluorocyanoesters to the electrolyte is the main contribution to the improvement of battery stability, but improvements on the electrode protection are somewhat offset by free radical processes initiated at the anode. However, limited by the material characteristics, the performance of a TA sound source could not be compared with magnetoelectric and piezoelectric loudspeakers. Recently, graphene, a two-dimensional material with the lowest heat capacity per unit area, was discovered to have a good TA performance. Compared with a traditional sound source, graphene TA sound sources (GTASSs) have many advantages, such as small volume, no diaphragm vibration, wide frequency range, high transparency, good flexibility, and high sound pressure level (SPL). Therefore, graphene has a great potential as a next-generation sound source. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging can also be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases using the photothermo-acoustic (PTA) effect. Therefore, in this review, we will introduce the history of TA devices. Then, the theory and simulation model of TA will be analyzed in detail. After that, we will talk about the graphene synthesis method. To improve the performance of GTASSs, many strategies such as lowering the thickness and using porous or suspended structures will be introduced. With a good PTA effect and large specific area, graphene PA imaging and drug delivery is a promising prospect in cancer treatment. Finally, the challenges and prospects of GTASSs will be discussed.

  • The circadian clock is a cell-autonomous time-keeping mechanism established gradually during embryonic development. Here, we generated a transgenic zebrafish line carrying a destabilized fluorescent protein driven by the promoter of a core clock gene, nr1d1, to report in vivo circadian rhythm at the single-cell level. By time-lapse imaging of this fish line and 3D reconstruction, we observed the sequential initiation of the reporter expression starting at photoreceptors in the pineal gland, then spreading to the cells in other brain regions at the single-cell level. Even within the pineal gland, we found heterogeneous onset of nr1d1 expression, in which each cell undergoes circadian oscillation superimposed over a cell type-specific developmental trajectory. Furthermore, we found that single-cell expression of nr1d1 showed synchronous circadian oscillation under a light-dark (LD) cycle. Remarkably, single-cell oscillations were dramatically dampened rather than desynchronized in animals raised under constant darkness, while the developmental trend still persists. It suggests that light exposure in early zebrafish embryos has significant effect on cellular circadian oscillations.BACKGROUND The goal of the present study was to determine whether endothelin-1 (EDN1) variants are associated with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) risk among Chinese Han people. MATERIAL AND METHODS The genotyping of EDN1 rs5370 and rs6458155 polymorphisms were conducted in 154 ICH patients and 168 healthy controls using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. RESULTS Genotype distribution for rs5370 and rs6458155 polymorphisms in the control group both conformed to HWE (P>0.05). Only CC genotype and C allele frequencies of rs6458155 between ICH patients and healthy individuals were significantly different (P=0.025; P=0.043), indicating rs64581255 is associated with increased ICH onset (OR=2.214, 95% CI=1.009-4.461; OR=1.389, 95% CI=1.010-1.910). When adjusted by confounding factors, the significant correlations still existed between 2 groups (P=0.028, adjusted OR=2.217, 95% CI=1.092-4.500; P=0.046, adjusted OR=1.386, 95% CI=1.005-1.910). The first study conducted on a sample of 107 children, aimed to define their preferences on different models of decorated nursing uniforms; the second one conducted on 101 nurses to understand the preferences, the meanings attributed to the uniform and their availability to adapt it according to the preferences expressed by the children. METHODS We conducted an observational study with a qualitative approach. For the first objective with the children, a visual stimulus was used, showing 6 models of uniform the traditional plus 5 models of different colors and themes (cartoons characters and videogames). For the second objective with the nurses, in addition to reproducing the same visual stimulus, a semi-structured questionnaire was used. RESULTS Children and nurses seem to be in perfect accord, because in both groups, color models were the most chosen. Nurses defined their uniform with terms of particular moral, intellectual and professional value and declared themselves available to align with the preferences of the children. CONCLUSIONS This study leaves little doubt about preferences; it also represents the true originality of the study because almost never in the literature have been compared the point of views of children and professionals, generally favoring the comparison between children and care givers. Our findings could represent a further landmark for guiding the choices of health organizations on currencies to be adopted in the pediatric field. (www.actabiomedica.it).BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK The Chiba Inter-professional Competency Scale (CICS29) validated in several languages, it is a self-report instrument that investigates the degree of interprofessional collaboration in six areas attitudes and beliefs of the professional; ability to manage a work group; actions to achieve goals; providing assistance that respects the patient; attitudes and behaviours that improve the cohesion of the working group; fulfilling or performing the own professional role. In addition to being recent, the scale investigates collaboration among all health professionals, and is not limited to specific professionals. The aim of the study was to validate the Italian version of CICS29. METHOD A questionnaire-based study was conducted with an Italian sample consisting of 530 health professionals (419 women¸ mean age = 40 years, SD = 10.7; range 23- 58 years). The internal validity was measured using factor analysis. To verify the convergent validity, the Italian Version of Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) was correlated with the CICS29; Results The reliability and the internal validity of the CICS29 revealed 6 factors corresponding to the original subscales. The analysis presents an excellent sample adequacy measure (KMO = .933) with the scores ranging from 0.62 to 0.78 for the interclass correlation coefficients of the 6 domains. A significant level of correlation was found between the subscales of the CICS29 and the ICCAS. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the Italian version of CICS29 has a satisfactory level of reliability and validity and it is recommended for measuring interprofessional collaboration of the health professionals. MATERIALS AND METHODS In April 2019, a survey was provided to students that investigate on personal information and habits, knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases, anti-HPV vaccination. Multivariable logistic regression was performed, considering it as a dependent variable "Have you occasionally had unprotected sex (without a condom)? Yes", in order to evaluate the role of the variables of the questionnaire. Results are expressed as adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR). RESULTS 405 students completed the questionnaire. The mean age of the sample is 21.65 years, 69.63% of the interviewees are women.     The circadian clock is a cell-autonomous time-keeping mechanism established gradually during embryonic development. Here, we generated a transgenic zebrafish line carrying a destabilized fluorescent protein driven by the promoter of a core clock gene, nr1d1, to report in vivo circadian rhythm at the single-cell level. By time-lapse imaging of this fish line and 3D reconstruction, we observed the sequential initiation of the reporter expression starting at photoreceptors in the pineal gland, then spreading to the cells in other brain regions at the single-cell level. Even within the pineal gland, we found heterogeneous onset of nr1d1 expression, in which each cell undergoes circadian oscillation superimposed over a cell type-specific developmental trajectory. Furthermore, we found that single-cell expression of nr1d1 showed synchronous circadian oscillation under a light-dark (LD) cycle. Remarkably, single-cell oscillations were dramatically dampened rather than desynchronized in animals raised under constant darkness, while the developmental trend still persists. The first study conducted on a sample of 107 children, aimed to define their preferences on different models of decorated nursing uniforms; the second one conducted on 101 nurses to understand the preferences, the meanings attributed to the uniform and their availability to adapt it according to the preferences expressed by the children. METHODS We conducted an observational study with a qualitative approach. For the first objective with the children, a visual stimulus was used, showing 6 models of uniform the traditional plus 5 models of different colors and themes (cartoons characters and videogames). For the second objective with the nurses, in addition to reproducing the same visual stimulus, a semi-structured questionnaire was used. RESULTS Children and nurses seem to be in perfect accord, because in both groups, color models were the most chosen. Nurses defined their uniform with terms of particular moral, intellectual and professional value and declared themselves available to align with the preferences of the children. CONCLUSIONS This study leaves little doubt about preferences; it also represents the true originality of the study because almost never in the literature have been compared the point of views of children and professionals, generally favoring the comparison between children and care givers. In addition to being recent, the scale investigates collaboration among all health professionals, and is not limited to specific professionals. The aim of the study was to validate the Italian version of CICS29. METHOD A questionnaire-based study was conducted with an Italian sample consisting of 530 health professionals (419 women¸ mean age = 40 years, SD = 10.7; range 23- 58 years). The internal validity was measured using factor analysis. To verify the convergent validity, the Italian Version of Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) was correlated with the CICS29; Results The reliability and the internal validity of the CICS29 revealed 6 factors corresponding to the original subscales. The analysis presents an excellent sample adequacy measure (KMO = .933) with the scores ranging from 0.62 to 0.78 for the interclass correlation coefficients of the 6 domains. A significant level of correlation was found between the subscales of the CICS29 and the ICCAS. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the Italian version of CICS29 has a satisfactory level of reliability and validity and it is recommended for measuring interprofessional collaboration of the health professionals.   • Arthrogryposis-renal dysfunction-cholestasis (ARC) syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations of the VPS33B encoding the vacuolar protein sorting 33B (VPS33B), which is involved in the intracellular protein sorting and vesicular trafficking. The presentation of thyroid storm was atypical (apathetic thyroid storm) with features of depression and extreme lethargy without any fever, anxiety, agitation, or seizure. There were no identifiable triggers for the thyroid storm. Apart from mechanical ventilation and continuous veno-venous renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit, he received propylthiouracil (PTU), esmolol, and corticosteroids, which were later switched to carbimazole and propranolol with steroids being tapered down. He was diagnosed with thyrotoxic myopathy which, like GD, remained undiagnosed for long (fatigability). We report a case of a 39-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital because a panoramic radiograph of her right mandible showed asymptomatic radiolucency in the apical molar area. CT images showed a low-density lesion in the periapical areas of the right mandible, which accompanied a well-defined, high-density lesion, and a mixed low/high-density lesion with an unusual marked irregular border in the left mandible. The MRI showed cyst-like extremely hyperintense signals on fat-suppressed T2-weighted images at the right mandibular low-density and the left mandibular mixed low/high-density areas. ADC map showed high values (over 2.5 × 10-3 mm2/s) at the cystic areas in the bilateral mandible. We performed incisional biopsies of the bilateral mandibular lesions and resections of the bilateral maxillary lesions. Surgical and histopathological findings established a diagnosis of florid COD in the bilateral mandible and maxilla, simultaneously complicated by multiple SBCs in the bilateral mandible. The ADC value of cystic component is useful for the diagnosis, if the COD-associated SBC exhibits solitary, nonspecific, or rare imaging findings.Pulmonary vein (PV) stenosis is a rare and serious complication of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for atrial fibrillation. After a thorough evaluation of the case, a redo-ablation was planned. As a part of the preablation workup, a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), a ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan of the lungs, and a chest computed tomography angiogram (CTA) were performed. The TEE revealed total obstruction of the left superior PV, with no color Doppler flow detected. It also showed evidence of multiple collateral flows at the os of the left superior PV.

    Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is integral to bedside evaluation of ED patients. This study examines POCUS exposure for physician assistants (PAs) before ED employment.

    A retrospective cross-sectional survey was distributed electronically to PAs employed in 13 EDs across a healthcare system. Participants were queried on POCUS education during PA training. Findings were reported as percentages of total respondents, using descriptive statistics.

    The response rate was 70.1%. Only 14.9% of respondents received POCUS exposure in PA school. Of those who received training, most (66.7%) received 5 or fewer hours and 94.1% strongly agree or agree that POCUS education should be integrated into PA education.

    In this survey, most PAs practicing in the ED did not receive POCUS education during training.     Measles (rubeola) is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable illness. Since 2014, a resurging trend has been noted in the incidence of measles, an illness once eliminated. Low vaccination rates contribute to its resurgence. The most compelling reason for low vaccination rates is the availability and prevalence of nonmedical exemptions (NME), which are primarily based on religious and philosophical beliefs. This article reviews the effect of NMEs in measles resurgence and the moral and legal implications of these exemptions. Clinicians should be aware of this trend and be ready to educate and evaluate the validity of NME requests.

Because patients with brain metastasis, stroke, or intracranial hemorrhage may present with similar acute neurologic symptoms, clinicians must have a high suspicion for brain metastasis and perform an immediate workup to rule out life-threatening conditions. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is integral to bedside evaluation of ED patients. This study examines POCUS exposure for physician assistants (PAs) before ED employment. A retrospective cross-sectional survey was distributed electronically to PAs employed in 13 EDs across a healthcare system. Participants were queried on POCUS education during PA training. Findings were reported as percentages of total respondents, using descriptive statistics. The response rate was 70.1%. Only 14.9% of respondents received POCUS exposure in PA school. Of those who received training, most (66.7%) received 5 or fewer hours and 94.1% strongly agree or agree that POCUS education should be integrated into PA education. In this survey, most PAs practicing in the ED did not receive POCUS education during training.
