Combined analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics indicated that different genes and metabolism pathways in kidneys of treated pigs were involved in glycerophospholipids metabolism and glycosphingolipid metabolism. Furthermore, copper induced mitochondrial apoptosis characterized by increased bax, bak, caspase 3, caspase 8 and caspase 9 expressions while decreased bcl-xl and bcl2/bax expression. Exposure to copper decreased the autophagic flux in terms of increased number of autophagosomes, beclin1 and LC3b/LC3a expression and p62 accumulation. Herein, a ternary metal oxide embedded carbon derived from amino-modified metal organic framework (CMOF(Fe/Al/Ni 8/7/5)-NH2) has been developed as an efficient adsorbent to remove aqueous methylene blue (MB) and acid red 73 (AR-73). CMOF(Fe/Al/Ni 8/7/5)-NH2 reached adsorption equilibrium for both MB and AR-73 within 30 min at neutral pH condition. It has been reported that the calorific value of biogas generated by anaerobic digestion (AD) is 21-25 MJ/m3 with the treatment which makes it an excellent replacement of natural gas and fossil fuels and can reduce more than 80% greenhouse gas emission to the surroundings. However, there are some limitations associated with the AD process for instance ammonia build-up at the first stage reduces the rate of hydrolysis of biomass, whereas, in the last stage it interferes with methane formation. Owing to special physicochemical properties such as high activity, high reactive surface area, and high specificity, tailor-made conductive nanoparticles can improve the performance of the AD process. In the AD process, H2 is used as an electron carrier, referred as mediated interspecies electron transfer (MIET). Due to the diffusion limitation of these electron carriers, the MIET efficiency is relatively low that limits the methanogenesis. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), which enables direct cell-to-cell electron transport between bacteria and methanogen, has been considered an alternative efficient approach to MIET that creates metabolically favorable conditions and results in faster conversion of organic acids and alcohols into methane. This paper discusses in detail the application of conductive nanoparticles to enhance the AD process efficiency. Interaction between microbes in anaerobic conditions for electron transfer with the help of CNPs is discussed. Application of a variety of conductive nanomaterials as an additive is discussed with their potential biogas production and treatment enhancement in the anaerobic digestion process.Short-chained perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS, four-carbon) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS, six-carbon) are widely employed to substitute long-chained per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Recent studies showed the potential persistence of PFBS and PFHxS, and also reported their correlation with obesity. However, the long-term outcome and underlying mechanisms remained poorly understood. Presently, the effects of PFBS and PFHxS were studied on C. elegans with multi- and trans-generational experiments. The multi-generational effects were measured in continuous four generational exposure (i.e., F1 to F4). Results showed that PFBS did not stimulate the fat content in F1 but in F4 with continuous but different disturbances on the lipid metabolism and the insulin and insulin-like (IIS) pathway. PFHxS stimulated the fat content in F1 and F4 with similar disturbances on the lipid metabolism and IIS pathway. The trans-generational results showed that the effects of PFBS and PFHxS on the lipid metabolism and IIS pathway were not totally recovered in the offspring of F1 (i.e., T1-T3) and F4 (i.e., T1'-T3') which were not continuously exposed. PFHxS showed a common pattern to up-regulate daf-7 in both multi- and trans-generational effects. The long-term consequences of the short-chained PFASs substitutes should be concerned and epigenetic regulations should be considered in future mechanism studies.Air, crop, and rhizosphere soil samples were collected from e-waste dismantling areas in Taizhou City (Zhejiang Province, China). The mean PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) concentrations in air in the Fengjiang and Binhai areas were 27.8 and 25.1 pg m-3, respectively (no significant difference, P > 0.05). The mean PBDE concentrations in rhizosphere soil from Fengjiang and Binhai were 9.19 × 104 and 1.34 × 103 pg g-1 dry weight, respectively (no significant difference, P > 0.05). The mean PBDE concentrations in the crop samples from Fengjiang and Binhai were 1.38 × 103 and 6.64 × 102 pg g-1 dry weight, respectively (no significant difference, P > 0.05). The root epidermis effectively prevented PBDEs from entering edible crop parts and kept the PBDE concentrations in edible roots low. PBDEs with≤5 bromine atoms (BDEs-15, -28, -47, -66, -85, -99, and -100) were selectively enriched from the rhizosphere soil into crop roots, but PBDEs with more bromine substituents were not transferred from the rhizosphere soil to the crop roots.

The EXIT-to-airway procedure is aimed to provide the time required to secure airways when an extrinsic or intrinsic fetal mass raise concerns about airways control at delivery. Due to the rarity of the procedure, we aim to provide a summary of the appropriate prenatal planning by a multidisciplinary team.
Report of a case of EXIT-to-airway procedure.
A 30 years-old woman, G2P1 with previous cesarean section, was referred to our Unit at 34 gestational weeks due to a fetal cervical mass of 7cm. An EXIT-to-airways procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team after accurate preoperative planning and the practice simulations. The partial fetal extraction and the amnioinfusion of pre-heated saline were used to prevent fetal complications. The use of supplemental intravenous anesthesia with remifentanil and better control of uterine tone with nitroglycerin allowed to reduce the exposure to volatile halogen for both the mother and the fetus. The accurate preoperative planning and the practice simulations allowed us to perform the treatment safely in urgency due to the onset of spontaneous labor at 37 weeks and 6 days.
The strong cooperation among specialists, accurate prenatal planning, and adopting all the required procedures and precautions are of paramount importance to successfully perform the EXIT-to-airway procedure.

Diagnosis of walnut allergy includes the evaluation of IgE sensitization by skin ***** tests (SPT) with standardized commercial extracts. When assuming the loss of relevant allergens due to extract preparation and storage, it is possible to perform SPT with fresh foods, i.e., ***** by ***** (PbP). To our knowledge, there is no published comparison between SPT with commercial extracts and PbP with fresh food about their sensitivity to the diagnosis of walnut allergy. Therefore, we describe our experience.
We observed seven children (mean age + SD 6.8 years + 5.2, range 2 - 15 years; male 85%) with an history of immediate adverse reaction following walnut ingestion. All but one the patients underwent SPT with at least two out of three walnut commercial extracts (Lofarma, Milan, Italy; ALK-Abellò, Milan, Italy; Allergopharma, Rome, Italy). It has also been performed PbP with raw walnut. IgE-mediated walnut allergy was diagnosed based on suggestive history, positivity of PbP and failed open food challenge with walnut.
The SPT with Lofarma extract was never positive (sensitivity = 0%), that performed with ALK extract was positive in 2/5 cases (sensitivity 40%) and that of Allergopharma extract was positive in 1/5 cases (sensitivity 20%). PbP was positive in 7/7 cases (sensitivity 100%).

This condition typically has a benign character that limits itself, and supportive therapy is all that is needed; however, life-threatening consequences may occur, such as upper respiratory tract obstruction, esophageal injury, and tracheal damage, requiring surgery. We report here a man aged 19 years who coughed vigorously due to acute allergic asthma, which lead to subcutaneous emphysema starting from the neck down to the chest, mediastinum and spinal epidural space. This case report stresses the importance of including SPM in the differential diagnosis of cough and chest pain in the young.Diaphragmatic hernia (DH) can be congenital or acquired. DH is a potentially life-threatening condition and the management in emergency setting remain unclear. Nonspecific symptoms can delay the diagnosis. We report a case of a 63-year-old man admitted for abdominal pain and nausea. He was successfully treated with damage control surgery.Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) is a rare idiopathic cystic interstitial granulomatous lung disease seen almost exclusively in cigarette smokers. It typically occurs between 20-40 years of age and equally distributed among both sexes. Management includes smoking cessation, avoidance of second-hand smoke, and close follow-up. Corticosteroids may be required in those with symptomatic disease with worsening lung function despite smoking cessation and progressive nodular stage of the disease. Here, we report an interesting case of biopsy-proven PLCH in a young never smoker female. Detailed questioning revealed significant exposure to incense smoke, highlighting a rare presentation of non-cigarette smoke-related PLCH. Avoidance of incense smoke combined with oral prednisolone (0.5mg/kg) tapered over 6 months led to complete resolution of symptoms, disappearance of nodules in high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the thorax and improvement in lung function.Laparoscopic splenectomy is nowadays widely performed for the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the spleen. However, removing the spleen increases the risk of postoperative infections, therefore patients need long-life antibiotics. Advancement in surgical technique and instrumentation have led to the development of partial splenectomy, which is mainly indicated to treat localized lesions of the spleen. The main advantage is the preservation of the immune function, so that long-life prescription of antibiotics is no longer needed. The introduction of the laparoscopic approach to laparoscopic splenectomy seems to add further benefits, namely a faster recovery. We report two cases of benign splenic cysts, which were treated by laparoscopic partial splenectomy. Technical aspects on the parenchymal transection and data from the most recent literature are discussed as well.

These cases suggest that COVID-19 may facilitate the development of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis and, therefore, clinicians must be aware of this differential diagnosis in patients from endemic areas with fever and coughing after recovery from COVID-19.Buffalo mozzarella cheese is one of the most appreciated traditional Italian products and it is certified as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product under the European Commission Regulation No. 1151/2012. It is obtained exclusively from buffalo milk. If made from *** milk, or a mixture of buffalo and *** milk, buffalo mozzarella cheese does not qualify as a PDO product. In order to maximize their profits, some producers market buffalo mozzarella that also contains *** milk as a PDO product, thus defrauding consumers. New methods for revealing this fraud are therefore needed. One such method is the droplet digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (ddPCR). Lacosamide treatment after SE mitigated the increased levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in the hippocampus and exerted strong neuroprotection both in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus, basolateral amygdala, and partially in the piriform cortex. In the past few decades, EVs have gained more and more attention, which is attributed to their important roles in cell-to-cell communication. They are regarded as promising sources for disease biomarkers and have been explored for applications in early-stage diagnostics, monitoring of disease status, therapeutics and drug delivery. Nevertheless, EVs are a heterogeneous group of vesicles, and include two predominant classes exosomes and microvesicles. The origins of these vesicles are diverse, which determines their differences in features and functions. To study the diversity of these EV subpopulations, it is essential to elucidate their compositions including proteins, metabolites, etc. Here, we presented a tandem extraction method to obtain metabolites and proteins from the same batch of EVs simultaneously, enabling a multi-omics differential analysis of exosomes and microvesicles in human plasma. As a result, we found 112 different proteins and 50 different metabolites between exosomes and microvesicles, demonstrating the diversity of these EV subpopulations. Furthermore, compared with human plasma, these two major classes of EVs showed distinct metabolome features, which indicated the necessity of analysing the metabolites derived from EVs to obtain a more comprehensive profile of the plasma metabolome, and the potential of EVs as important sources for biomarker screening.Our study involved a simple, sensitive voltammetric method of determining either carbonate or bicarbonate ions independently with azomethine-H and a disposable pencil graphite electrode. As a result, we found 112 different proteins and 50 different metabolites between exosomes and microvesicles, demonstrating the diversity of these EV subpopulations. Binary outcomes are extremely common in biomedical research. Despite its popularity, binomial regression often fails to model this kind of data accurately due to the overdispersion problem. Many alternatives can be found in the literature, the beta-binomial (BB) regression model being one of the most popular. The additional parameter of this model enables a better fit to overdispersed data. It also exhibits an attractive interpretation in terms of the intraclass correlation coefficient. Nonetheless, in many real data applications, a single additional parameter cannot handle the entire excess of variability. In this study, we propose a new finite mixture distribution with BB components, namely, the flexible beta-binomial (FBB), which is characterized by a richer parameterization. This allows us to enhance the variance structure to account for multiple causes of overdispersion while also preserving the intraclass correlation interpretation. The novel regression model, based on the FBB distribution, exploits the flexibility and large variety of the distribution's possible shapes (which includes bimodality and various tail behaviors). Thus, it succeeds in accounting for several (possibly concomitant) sources of overdispersion stemming from the presence of latent groups in the population, outliers, and excessive zero observations. Adopting a Bayesian approach to inference, we perform an intensive simulation study that shows the superiority of the new regression model over that of the existing ones. Its better performance is also confirmed by three applications to real datasets extensively studied in the biomedical literature, namely, bacteria data, atomic bomb radiation data, and control **** data.
Recent advances in diffusion-weighted MRI provide "restricted diffusion signal fraction" and restricting pore size estimates. Materials based on co-electrospun oriented hollow cylinders have been introduced to provide validation for such methods. This study extends this work, exploring accuracy and repeatability using an extended acquisition on a 300 mT/m gradient human MRI scanner, in substrates closely mimicking tissue, that is, non-circular cross-sections, intra-voxel fiber crossing, intra-voxel distributions of pore-sizes, and smaller pore-sizes overall.

We aimed to evaluate late clinical outcomes and risk factors for root dilation after proximal aortic replacement in patients with BAV and right-left fusion (RL-BAV).
Clinical and echocardiographic data of all patients with intraoperative RL-BAV who underwent ascending aortic replacement with or without noncoronary sinus (NCS) replacement (Groups 1 and 2, respectively) between 1999 and 2017, were retrospectively revised. A multivariable analysis assessed hazard factors for root dilation during follow-up (FU).
Of 206 surgeries performed (M 81%; age 57 ± 13 years, EuroSCORE II 2.7 ± 1.9%), 79 (38%) required NCS replacement. One hundred fifty-seven patients (76%) underwent aortic valve replacement (with aortic regurgitation predominating in Group 1, p = .04). The preoperative aortic root was larger in patients requiring NCS replacement (43.3 ± 5.1 vs. 39.2 ± 4.8 mm, p < .001). At a median FU time of 7 years (interquartile range 4-10), no residual root dissections occurred, and only two patients (belonging to Group 2) required redo root surgery. Preoperative mild aortic regurgitation and aortic root diameter >35 mm at discharge were risk factors for root dilation >40 mm at FU (p = .02). Aortic root did not dilate over time, irrespective of NCS replacement (p = .06).

Alcohol excites neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the release of dopamine from these neurons is a key event in ethanol (EtOH)-induced reward and reinforcement. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain EtOH's actions on neurons of the VTA, but antagonists generally do not eliminate the EtOH-induced excitation of VTA neurons. We have previously demonstrated that the ion channel KCNK13 plays an important role in the EtOH-related excitation of mouse VTA neurons. Here, we elaborate on that finding and further assess the importance of KCNK13 in rats.

To evaluate the clinical validity of the observation policy of omitting completion lymph node dissection, we retrospectively surveyed patients with sentinel lymph node-positive melanoma between 2002 and 2020 at Niigata Cancer Center Hospital. A total of 59 patients were categorized into the observation group (n = 19) and completion lymph node dissection group (n = 40). Newly developed anticancer agents, including targeted therapy and immunotherapy, were more commonly used in the observation group than in the completion lymph node dissection group as either adjuvant therapy (31.6% vs. 5.0%) or post-recurrence therapy (100% vs. 34.8%). To explore the intervention effect of exercise rehabilitation therapy on patients with type 2 diabetic osteoporosis.
From August 2017 to November 2019, 117 patients with type 2 diabetic osteoporosis who received treatment in Nanhua Hospital affiliated to Nanhua University were selected. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/tepp-46.html Among them, 54 cases were given routine treatment in the control group (CG), and 63 cases were given exercise rehabilitation therapy on the basis of routine treatment in the study group (SG). The blood glucose level, bone mineral density, quality of life, VAS score, therapeutic effect and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups.
After treatment, the blood glucose level and VAS score in the SG were obviously lower than those in the CG, while the bone mineral density, quality of life and clinical total effective rate were obviously higher than those in the CG, and the adverse reactions were lower than those in the CG.

Our aim was to explore the influence of humanistic care based on Carolina care model on postoperative recovery and quality of life in patients with ovarian cancer (OC).
In this prospective study, we selected 85 OC patients and randomly divided them into the Carolina group (n = 43) given humanistic care based on Carolina care model and the control group (n = 42) given routine nursing intervention. The postoperative recovery and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Ovary Cancer (FACT-O) scores were compared between the two groups.
After intervention, the time of first flatus and defecation after surgery, the time of first ambulation and the length of average postoperative hospital stay were **** shorter, and the pain score, total complication rate, self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale scores as well as Cortisol, C-reactive protein and fasting blood glucose levels at 48 hours postoperatively were significantly lower in the Carolina group than in the control group. The nursing satisfaction in the Carolina group was markedly higher than that in the control group (97.67% vs. 78.57%, P<0.01). After 3 months of follow-up, the Carolina group showed higher dimension scores of FACT-O than the control group (all P<0.001).
Humanistic nursing care based on Carolina care model can significantly ameliorate the recovery of OC patients, reduce the physical and psychologic stress response, and effectively enhance the nursing satisfaction and quality of life.

This study was designed to explore the treatment efficacy of arterial urokinase thrombolysis combined with Solitaire AB stent for acute cerebral infarction (ACI) and its influence on neuroprotective factors and factors for neurological injury.
We randomly assigned 90 patients with ACI to receive arterial urokinase thrombolysis combined with Solitaire AB stent thrombectomy (observation group, OG) or to receive arterial urokinase thrombolysis (control group, CG). The two groups were compared in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, activities of daily living (ADL) score, vascular recanalization rate 1 month after treatment, and serum levels of neuroprotective factors (insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1), neurotrophic factor (NTF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)) and factors for neurological injury (neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S100B protein (S100B), ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), glial fibrillary acidic pvating the treatment risk.

This research was designed to probe into the influencing factors of holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model on psychology and quality of life in advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients.
Altogether 194 patients with advanced GC treated in our hospital from May 2017 to July 2018 were divided into two groups according to different nursing intervention methods. Where from, 86 were given routine nursing intervention and 108 were given holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model. The psychology, pain relief, sleep quality and self-nursing ability of patients were compared before and after intervention. The quality of life before and after intervention and the nursing satisfaction score after nursing were recorded. The factors affecting their quality of life were assessed by Logistic regression analysis.
The SAS, SDS, NRS and PSQI scores in the intervention group (IG) were obviously lower than those in the control group (CG) after nursing. The ESCA and EORTC QLQ-C30 scores after nursing in the IG were markedly higher than those in the CG. The total nursing satisfaction of patients in the IG after nursing was obviously higher than that in the CG. Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage, unimproved negative emotion, lack of self-nursing ability and routine nursing intervention all increased the risk of reduced quality of life.

After intervention, the time of first flatus and defecation after surgery, the time of first ambulation and the length of average postoperative hospital stay were much shorter, and the pain score, total complication rate, self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale scores as well as Cortisol, C-reactive protein and fasting blood glucose levels at 48 hours postoperatively were significantly lower in the Carolina group than in the control group. The nursing satisfaction in the Carolina group was markedly higher than that in the control group (97.67% vs. 78.57%, P<0.01). After 3 months of follow-up, the Carolina group showed higher dimension scores of FACT-O than the control group (all P<0.001). Humanistic nursing care based on Carolina care model can significantly ameliorate the recovery of OC patients, reduce the physical and psychologic stress response, and effectively enhance the nursing satisfaction and quality of life. This study was designed to explore the treatment efficacy of arterial urokinase thrombolysis combined with Solitaire AB stent for acute cerebral infarction (ACI) and its influence on neuroprotective factors and factors for neurological injury. We randomly assigned 90 patients with ACI to receive arterial urokinase thrombolysis combined with Solitaire AB stent thrombectomy (observation group, OG) or to receive arterial urokinase thrombolysis (control group, CG). The two groups were compared in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, activities of daily living (ADL) score, vascular recanalization rate 1 month after treatment, and serum levels of neuroprotective factors (insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1), neurotrophic factor (NTF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)) and factors for neurological injury (neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S100B protein (S100B), ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), glial fibrillary acidic pvating the treatment risk. This research was designed to probe into the influencing factors of holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model on psychology and quality of life in advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients. Altogether 194 patients with advanced GC treated in our hospital from May 2017 to July 2018 were divided into two groups according to different nursing intervention methods. Where from, 86 were given routine nursing intervention and 108 were given holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model. The psychology, pain relief, sleep quality and self-nursing ability of patients were compared before and after intervention. The quality of life before and after intervention and the nursing satisfaction score after nursing were recorded. The factors affecting their quality of life were assessed by Logistic regression analysis. The SAS, SDS, NRS and PSQI scores in the intervention group (IG) were obviously lower than those in the control group (CG) after nursing. The ESCA and EORTC QLQ-C30 scores after nursing in the IG were markedly higher than those in the CG. The total nursing satisfaction of patients in the IG after nursing was obviously higher than that in the CG. Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage, unimproved negative emotion, lack of self-nursing ability and routine nursing intervention all increased the risk of reduced quality of life. The decline in the quality of life of patients with advanced GC results from a comprehensive action of various risk factors, and holistic nursing under a social medical model can improve the psychology of patients, improve their self-nursing ability and quality of life. We evaluate the consequences of processing alcohol-fixed tissue in a processor previously used for formalin-fixed tissue. Biospecimens fixed in PAXgene Tissue Fixative were cut into three pieces then processed in a flushed tissue processor previously used for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks (neutral buffered formalin [NBF]+ve), a formalin-free system (NBF-ve), or left unprocessed. Histomorphology and immunohistochemistry were compared using hematoxylin/eosin staining and antibodies for MLH-1, Ki-67, and CK-7. Nucleic acid was extracted using the PAXgene Tissue RNA/DNA kits and an FFPE RNA extraction kit. RNA integrity was assessed using RNA integrity number (RIN), reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) (four amplicons), and quantitative RT-PCR (three genes). For DNA, multiplex PCR, quantitative PCR, DNA integrity number, and gel electrophoresis were used. Compared with NBF-ve, RNA from NBF+ve blocks had 88% lower yield and poorer purity; average RIN reduced from 5.0 to 3.8, amplicon length was 408 base pairs shorter, and Cq numbers were 1.9-2.4 higher. Using the FFPE extraction kit rescued yield and purity, but RIN further declined by 1.1 units. Differences between NBF+ve and NBF-ve in respect of DNA, histomorphology, and immunohistochemistry were either non-existent or small in magnitude. Formalin contamination of a tissue processor and its reagents therefore critically reduce RNA yield and integrity. We evaluated 22,072 symptomatic patients tested for COVID-19. Propensity-matched analyses were performed to determine if treatment with aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) affected thrombotic outcomes in COVID-19. Neither aspirin nor NSAIDs affected mortality in COVID-19. Thus, aspirin does not appear to prevent thrombosis and death in COVID-19. The mechanisms of thrombosis in COVID-19, therefore, appear distinct and the role of platelets as direct mediators of SARS-CoV-2-mediated thrombosis warrants further investigation.Emerging research supports that early intervention leads to better health and higher functional status for infants with very low birthweight and/or low gestational age. We analyzed mitochondrial network characteristics, cellular oxidative metabolism, and H2O2 production in C2C12 myoblasts growing in physiological (5%) or standard cell culture (18%)O2 and in physiological (Plasmax) or standard cell culture [Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM)] media. Although E2 significantly lowered H2O2 production from cells growing in 18% O2/DMEM (standard cell culture), it had no effect on cells growing in Plasmax. Moreover, culture conditions significantly altered the effects of E2 and SERMs on mitochondrial abundance and network characteristics. These results indicate that the effects of E2 and SERMs on various aspects of cell physiology strongly depends on growth conditions, which in turn emphasizes the need to consider this carefully in cell culture experiments.

Steroid-modified tinea, also known as tinea incognito, is an infection by the dermatophytes, where the clinical morphology is modified due to corticosteroids, either systemic or topical. Rampant use of topical corticosteroids has led to increasing recurrence in tinea infections.
All consenting cases of tinea presenting to outpatient department of dermatology department of Civil Service Hospital from March to August 2020 for a total of 6 months were included in this study. Tinea infection involving only the palms, soles, nails or scalp were excluded.
A total of 200 patients were included in this study. Among these, 175 patients (87.5%) were using topical corticosteroids. A significant association was noted between dermatophyte infection of more than one month and topical corticosteroids use (p<0.05). This study revealed that males were using super-potent topical corticosteroids more as compared to females (p<0.05). Moreover, no association was noted between the level of education attained and the use of topical corticosteroids (p=0.91). Febrile seizure is the most common cause of seizure in children. Iron deficiency, by lowering seizure threshold, is proposed to be one of the risk factors for febrile seizure. Many studies have been done to determine the association of iron deficiency anemia with febrile seizure but the results are controversial. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the association of iron deficiency anemia with febrile seizure in Nepalese children.
A prospective age and sex matched case control study was performed in 68 cases of febrile seizures and 68 controls of febrile illness without seizure after calculating the sample size. The study was conducted from October 21, 2019 to October 20, 2020 in Pediatric ward and intensive care unit of College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Nepal after obtaining ethical clearance from institutional review committee. Data entry was done in statistical packages for the social science version 20.
Mean of haematological parameters (haemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume) as well as mean of serum iron, ferritin and transferrin saturation were significantly less and total iron binding capacity was significantly high in cases as compared to controls (P <0.05). Iron deficiency anemia was significantly associated with cases (59.7%), with odds ratio of 2.5 (95% confidence interval =1.24 - 5.01) as compared to control (40.3%) (P <0.05).

The study is aimed at highlighting the pattern of congenital defect in a tertiary care hospital. Congenital anomalies are recognized as a growing cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries and a major cause of distress to parents.
This was a prospective descriptive study conducted between September 2019 and August 2020 with the objective to determine the types of congenital anomalies among live born neonates at Manipal Teaching Hospital (MTH), Pokhara and to determine their immediate outcome. Neonatal and maternal characteristics were noted.
Twenty four out of 2515 live births had congenital anomalies during the study period, giving an incidence rate of 9.42 congenital anomalies per 1000 live birth per year. Single system involvement was seen in 79.2 % cases, remaining 5 (20.8%) neonates had involvement of more than one system; 54.2% of these newborns were discharged, 33.3% expired, 8.3% left against medical advice and 4.2% were referred out.
This study highlights the importance of clinical examination of neonates to detect anomalies in our setting.

Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli or non-fermenters are opportunistic pathogens associated with serious infections in intensive care unit patients. Although carbapenems were considered as a backbone of treatment for life-threatening infections, these bacteria are increasingly acquiring resistance to carbapenems. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are prioritized as critical pathogens by the World Health Organization. The objective of the study was to document the status of carbapenem-resistant and carbapenemase-producing non-fermenters isolated from intensive care unit patients.
This study was conducted at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal. The clinical specimens collected from intensive care unit patients were processed for isolation and identification of non-fermenters and antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacterial isolates was determined. The multidrug-resistant isolates were identified and carbapenemase enzyme was detected in the carrbapenem-resistant, carbapenemase-producing, and multidrug-resistant non-fermenters isolates. Therefore, preventing the spread of these superbugs among the critically ill patients in intensive care units should be a major initiative in hospitals.
