The aim of this review was to summarise the knowledge on Snail-1, especially in the context of thyroid oncogenesis.

On average, insecticides reduced target pest populations to 19% of their preapplication densities.     Japan has the most rapidly ageing population in the world. The Japanese government has, therefore, promoted physician-led home health care for frail and disabled people.

    To describe mortality among older people receiving physician-led health care at home or at a nursing home in Japan and to identify risk factors.

    This was a multicentre prospective cohort study. Participants were aged ≥65 years and had started to receive regular physician-led health care at home or at nursing homes from 13 facilities between 1 February 2013 and 31 January 2016. The observation period ended on 31 January 2017. We used a biopsychosocial approach for exploratory analysis of 13 variables to identify mortality risk factors.

    The median (25th to 75th percentile) observation time was 417 (121-744) days. Of 825 participants, 380 died. The total cumulative survival for 180, 360, 720 and 1440 days was 73.4% (95% confidence interval 70.2-76.3), 64.2% (60.8-67.5), 52.6% (48.8-56.3) and 34.6% (23.5-46.0). The Kaplan-Meier cumulative survival curve showed a steep drop during the first 6 months of observation. A multivariate Cox proportional hazard model showed that sex (male), high Charlson Comorbidity Index score, low serum albumin level, low Barthel Index score, receipt of oxygen therapy, high Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia score and non-receipt of public assistance were associated with mortality.

Ethyl acetate-methanol-water (313, v/v/v) was the optimum biphasic solvent system, which was selected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and run on a preparative scale where the lower aqueous phase was used as the mobile phase with a head-to-tail elution mode. Chlorogenic acid (3.83 mg), Isochlorogenic acid A (6.51 mg), Isochlorogenic acid B (4.38 mg) and Isochlorogenic acid C (4.47 mg) were obtained for the first time in an one-step HSCCC separation from 800 mg of the crude extracts. The purities of four compounds were determined to be >95% by HPLC. Chemical structures of each isolated compounds were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry methods. It is worth noting that all the four compounds were isolated here for the first time from GPF and this work confirms the effectiveness of HSCCC for the separation of compounds contained in complex samples, and provides a foundation for further exploitation of G. procumbens.Cortical spreading depression (CSD), which is closely correlated with migraine aura, cerebral ischemia, seizure, and brain injury, is a spreading wave of neuronal and glial depolarization. Behavioral test, intrinsic signal optical imaging and western blot analysis were used for evaluating the inhibition effect of PUS on CSD in rat. We found that 1) 30 min of PUS can significantly improve motor activity of rat with CSD. 2) Both 30 s and 30 min of PUS can significantly reduce count and propagation speed of CSD in rat and the inhibitory effect was enhanced with increase of ultrasound intensity. 3) 30 min of PUS significantly enhanced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein in brain tissue with CSD. This will allow future investigators to representatively sample the space of odorous molecules as well as identify previously unknown odorants with a target odor character. Here, I put this work into the context of other modeling efforts and highlight the urgent need for large new datasets and transparent benchmarks for the field to make and evaluate modeling breakthroughs, respectively.

  • Antiferroelectric materials, characterized by an antiparallel array of adjacent dipoles, are holding a bright future for solid-state refrigeration based on their electrocaloric (EC) effects. Despite great advances of inorganic oxides and some organic soft polymers, their EC effects are achieved under quite high electric fields that result in too low EC strengths for practical application. Currently, it is a challenge to exploit soft antiferroelectric with strong EC strengths. Here, by the mixed-cation alloying, we present a new perovskite-type soft antiferroelectric, (isopentylammonium)2CsPb2Br7 (1), which incorporates both an organic spacing cation and an inorganic perovskitizer Cs+ moiety. Remarkably, the synergic cooperativity between the reorientation of the organic spacer and atomic displacement of Cs+ cation triggers its multiple ferroelectric-antiferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions at 321 and 350 K. Their natural polarization vs electric field hysteresis loops are characterized to confirm ferroelectric and antiferroelectric orders of 1, respectively. It is emphasized that, under a low electric field of 13 kV/cm, the antipolar dipole realignment in 1 endows a giant near-room-temperature EC strength (ΔTEC/ΔE) of 15.4 K m MV-1 at antiferroelectric phase. This merit is on par with the record-high value of BaTiO3 (∼16 K m/MV) but far beyond the state-of-the-art soft polymers. The underlying EC mechanism for 1 is ascribed to the extremely low critical field to switch dipoles, involving the reorientation of the organic spacer and the shift of the Cs+ cation. Besides, notable EC entropy change (∼4.1 J K-1 kg-1) and temperature change (∼2 K) reveal potentials of 1 for solid-state refrigeration. Here, we employed adversarial neural networks with conditioning to develop an easily reconfigurable virus diagnostic platform that leverages a dataset of smartphone-taken microfluidic chip photos to rapidly generate image classifiers for different target pathogens on-demand. Adversarial learning was also used to augment this real image dataset by generating 16,000 realistic synthetic microchip images, through style generative adversarial networks (StyleGAN). We used this platform, termed smartphone-based pathogen detection resource multiplier using adversarial networks (SPyDERMAN), to accurately detect different intact viruses in clinical samples and to detect viral nucleic acids through integration with CRISPR diagnostics. We evaluated the performance of the system in detecting five different virus targets using 179 patient samples. The generalizability of the system was confirmed by rapid reconfiguration to detect SARS-CoV-2 antigens in nasal swab samples (n = 62) with 100% accuracy. Overall, the SPyDERMAN system may contribute to epidemic preparedness strategies by providing a platform for smartphone-based diagnostics that can be adapted to a given emerging viral agent within days of work.This work provides a globally regionalized approach for quantifying particulate matter (PM2.5) health impacts. Atmospheric transport and pollutant chemistry of primary particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO x ), and ammonia (NH3) from stack emissions were modeled and used to calculate monthly high-resolution maps of global characterization factors that can be used for life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) and risk assessment. These characterization factors are applied to a global data set of coal power emissions. The results show large regional and temporal differences in health impacts per kg of emission and per amount of coal power generation (5-1300 DALY TWh-1). While small emission reductions of PM2.5 and SO2 from coal power lead to similar health benefits across densely populated areas of Asia and Europe, we find that larger emission reductions result in up to three times higher health benefits in parts of Asia because of the nonlinear health responses to pollution exposure changes. Hence, many regions in Asia benefit disproportionately **** from large coal power PM2.5 and SO2 emission reductions. NO x emission reductions can lead to equally high health benefits, where unfavorable atmospheric conditions coincide with elevated NH3 background pollution and large population (e.g., in Central Europe, Indonesia, or Japan but also numerous other places).
    Antiferroelectric materials, characterized by an antiparallel array of adjacent dipoles, are holding a bright future for solid-state refrigeration based on their electrocaloric (EC) effects. Despite great advances of inorganic oxides and some organic soft polymers, their EC effects are achieved under quite high electric fields that result in too low EC strengths for practical application. Currently, it is a challenge to exploit soft antiferroelectric with strong EC strengths. Here, by the mixed-cation alloying, we present a new perovskite-type soft antiferroelectric, (isopentylammonium)2CsPb2Br7 (1), which incorporates both an organic spacing cation and an inorganic perovskitizer Cs+ moiety. Remarkably, the synergic cooperativity between the reorientation of the organic spacer and atomic displacement of Cs+ cation triggers its multiple ferroelectric-antiferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions at 321 and 350 K. Their natural polarization vs electric field hysteresis loops are characterized to confirm ferroelectric and antiferroelectric orders of 1, respectively. It is emphasized that, under a low electric field of 13 kV/cm, the antipolar dipole realignment in 1 endows a giant near-room-temperature EC strength (ΔTEC/ΔE) of 15.4 K m MV-1 at antiferroelectric phase. This merit is on par with the record-high value of BaTiO3 (∼16 K m/MV) but far beyond the state-of-the-art soft polymers. The underlying EC mechanism for 1 is ascribed to the extremely low critical field to switch dipoles, involving the reorientation of the organic spacer and the shift of the Cs+ cation.   • Fixed-gear cycling performance during criteriums predominantly involves the aerobic system. Whether pacing is another important factor for performance is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to explore pacing and/or positioning strategies of fixed-gear riders during criteriums. Race results of an international fixed-gear criterium were analyzed (20 laps for women and 28 laps for men; laps = 1,270 m). Statistics were conducted on individuals lap time and positioning during the finals. Race pattern in women (n = 35) and men (n = 53) revealed that the faster laps (P 50% revealed an important positioning variability. The best riders are mostly amongst the first during the race. However, the others exhibited larger mean position variations during the first half of the race. Our results demonstrated variable pacing strategies during fixed-gear criteriums. Although some riders had economical drafting strategies during the first half of the race, riding placed ahead during the whole race seemed to be an essential performance factor.Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the sporting and exercise activities of millions of youth. Running is an activity that could be maintained while social distancing restrictions were implemented during the pandemic. If running-related injuries do occur, these restrictions may also influence the access to care or care seeking behavior of this population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if the social distancing restrictions during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic influenced training habits, injury, and care seeking behavior in youth long-distance runners. Methods A customized, open online questionnaire was provided to runners 9-19 years of age who participated in long-distance running activities including team/club cross-country, track and field (distances ≥800 m), road races, or recreational running. Participants responded to questions about demographics, running habits, RRIs, and health care provider visits 6-months before as well as during social distancing restrictions due to COVID-19. 01). A questionnaire assessing seasonal physical preparation practices, recovery, monitoring and sport science technology, and unique aspects in female rugby was developed. Thirty-seven physical preparation practitioners (32 males, 5 females) responded to the questionnaire. Most participants (78%) worked with national or regional/state level female athletes. Performance testing was more frequently assessed in the pre- (97%) and in-season (86%), than off-season (23%). Resistance, cardiovascular, sprint and plyometric training, and recovery sessions were all believed to be important to enhancing performance and implemented by most participants (≥ 89%). Sport science technologies were commonly (54%) utilized to inform current practice. Menstrual cycle phase was monitored by 22% of practitioners. The most frequently reported unique considerations in female rugby codes included psycho-social aspects (41%), the menstrual cycle (22%), and physical differences (22%). Practitioners working with female rugby can use the presented data to inform and develop current practices.An individual's physical activity substantially impacts the potential for prevention and recovery from diverse health issues, including cardiovascular diseases. Precise quantification of a patient's level of day-to-day physical activity, which can be characterized by the type, intensity, and duration of movement, is crucial for clinicians. As such, it is often used as a metric to assess health performance. A range of clinical walking tests exist to evaluate gait and inform clinical decision-making. However, these assessments are often short, provide qualitative movement assessments, and are performed in a clinical setting that is not representative of the real-world. Technological advancements in wearable sensing and associated algorithms enable new opportunities to complement in-clinic evaluations of movement during free-living. SECM data treatment based on scanning probe microscopy imaging allows a fast and easy comparison of the numerous images, as well as the optimization of the preparation. Experiments suggest that TPEs behave as a network of interacting microelectrodes made by electrochemically active islands isolated between less active areas. Higher carbon content in TPEs is not always indicative of more uniform electrodes with better electrochemical performances. Using various SECM redox probes, it is possible to select a specific graphite or polymer type for the analyte of interest. This review addresses the current breadth of biochemical and microbiological efforts to preserve the future of the β-lactam antibiotics through a better understanding of how S. aureus protects the enzyme targets of the β-lactams, the penicillin-binding proteins. In this work, we report a simple method to shape the morphology of polystyrene-block-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PS-b-PDMS) microparticles, by employing core-cross-linked polymeric nanoparticles (CNPs) as cosurfactants which are synthesized through cross-linking P4VP segment of PS-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP). The addition of pH-responsive CNPs makes the shape of pH-inert PS-b-PDMS microparticles sensitive to pH value. The PS-b-PDMS microparticles transformed from elongated Janus pupa-like particles to onion-like particles by decreasing the pH value of the aqueous phase. The deformation mechanism is investigated by changing pH value, the weight fraction of CNPs, and surfactant property. To elucidate these molecular underpinnings, we performed coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of HIV-1 virions pinned to the CD4 T cell membrane by different numbers of gp41 trimers. We built realistic cell and viral membranes by mimicking their respective lipid compositions. We found that a single gp41 was inadequate for mediating fusion. Lipid mixing between membranes, indicating the onset of fusion, was efficient when three or more gp41 trimers pinned the membranes. The gp41 trimers interacted strongly with many different lipids in the host cell membrane, triggering lipid configurational rearrangements, exchange, and mixing. The addition of pH-responsive CNPs makes the shape of pH-inert PS-b-PDMS microparticles sensitive to pH value. The PS-b-PDMS microparticles transformed from elongated Janus pupa-like particles to onion-like particles by decreasing the pH value of the aqueous phase. The deformation mechanism is investigated by changing pH value, the weight fraction of CNPs, and surfactant property. To elucidate these molecular underpinnings, we performed coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of HIV-1 virions pinned to the CD4 T cell membrane by different numbers of gp41 trimers. We built realistic cell and viral membranes by mimicking their respective lipid compositions. We found that a single gp41 was inadequate for mediating fusion. Lipid mixing between membranes, indicating the onset of fusion, was efficient when three or more gp41 trimers pinned the membranes. The gp41 trimers interacted strongly with many different lipids in the host cell membrane, triggering lipid configurational rearrangements, exchange, and mixing.     Consecutive patients with successful HBP for bradycardia indications were identified from the Geisinger HBP registry. His bundle capture thresholds, baseline comorbidities, and radiographic lead slack characteristics were analysed. An increase in HB capture threshold ≥1 V above implant values at any time during follow-up was tracked. Forty-four of the 294 studied (15%) experienced HB capture threshold increase by ≥ 1 V. Threshold increase was seen early (41% by 8 weeks, 66% by 1 year). Eighteen (6%) patients required lead revision in follow-up. Abnormal slack shape was associated with a trend toward capture threshold increase [hazard ratio (HR) 2.07; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.9-4.6; P = 0.08]. Non-perpendicular angle of lead insertion on radiography was associated with the capture threshold increase (HR 2.81, 95% CI 1.4-5.8; P < 0.01).

The HPLC-UV method was used for the determination of GTI 5A2Cl in API TNX. The compounds were separated using a mobile phase composed of water (pH 3 adjusted with orthophosphoric acid) MeOH, (5050 v/v) on a C18 column (150 × 4.6 mm i.d., 2.7 μm) at a flow rate of 0.7 mL min-1. Detection was carried out in the 254 nm wavelength. Column temperature was maintained at 40°C during the analyses and 10 μL volume was injected into the HPLC-UV system. The method was validated in the range of 1-40 μg mL-1. The obtained calibration curves for the GTI compound was found linear with equation, y = 40766x - 1125,6 (R2 = 0.999). The developed analytical method toward the target compounds was accurate, and the achieved limit of detection and limit of quantification values for the target compound 5A2Cl were 0.015 and 0.048 μg mL-1, respectively. XLOC_035088 silencing protected against MCAO-induced ischemic brain injury in vivo and OGD-induced hippocampal neuronal apoptosis in vitro. Intrahippocampal silencing of XLOC_035088 significantly decreased brain XLOC_035088 expression, reduced brain infarct size, and improved neurological function through inhibiting NOTCH1 following derepression of presenilin 2 (PSEN2).     The reverse transcriptase (RT) region of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the target of antiviral treatment. However, the discrepancy in RT mutations between nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA)-treated and -untreated chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients is un clear.

    Serum samples were collected from 119 NA-treated and 135 NA-untreated patients. The sampling time was decided by the clinician. Full-length HBV RT regions were amplified using nest polymerase chain reaction. The mutations within the RT region were analysed by direct sequencing.

    The incidence of RT mutations in treated patients was higher than that in untreated patients (p<0.05). The classic drug-resistant mutations were detected in 44.5% (53/119) of treated patients, which was significantly higher than in untreated patients (6.7% [9/135]) (p<0.05). The non-classical mutations showed their complexity and diversity in both patient groups. Multiple mutations (three or more) were more frequent in treated patients than in untreated patients (p<0.05).

Here, we report on hydraulics, gas exchange and carbon reserves of two broad-leaved tree species (Quercus mongolica and Fraxinus mandshurica) in mature temperate forests after a seven-year experiment with different levels of N addition (control (CK), low (23 kg N ha-1 yr-1), medium (46 kg N ha-1 yr-1) and high (69 kg N ha-1 yr-1)). We investigated variation in hydraulic traits (xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks), native percentage loss of conductivity (PLC) and leaf water potential), xylem anatomy (vessel diameter and density), gas exchange (maximum net photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance) and carbon reserves (soluble sugars, starch and total nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC)) with different N addition levels. We found that medium N addition significantly increased Ks and vessel diameter compared to control, but accompanied increasing PLC and decreasing leaf water potential, suggesting that N addition results in a greater hydraulic efficiency and higher risk of embolism. N addition promoted photosynthetic capacity via increasing foliar N concentration but did not change stomatal conductance. In addition, we found increase in foliar soluble sugar concentration and decrease in starch concentration with N addition, and positive correlations between hydraulic traits (vessel diameter and PLC) and soluble sugars. These coupled responses of tree hydraulics and carbon metabolism are consistent with a regulatory role of carbohydrates in maintaining hydraulic integrity. Affective antecedents and consequences of physical activity are thought to be important for the development and maintenance of such behavior, though research examining these associations in youth across the weight spectrum remains limited.

Pediatric obesity confers increased risk for a host of negative psychological and physical health consequences and is reliably linked to low levels of physical activity. Affective antecedents and consequences of physical activity are thought to be important for the development and maintenance of such behavior, though research examining these associations in youth across the weight spectrum remains limited. This study examined bi-directional associations between affect and physical activity (i.e., moderate-to-vigorous physical activity [MVPA] and total activity counts), and the extent to which weight (body mass index z-score [z-BMI]) moderated these associations. Participants were drawn from a prior study of siblings (N = 77; mean age = 15.4 ± 1.4 years) discordant for weight status (39 nonoverweight siblings, 38 siblings with overweight/obesity) who completed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) with accelerometer-assessed physical activity. Generalized linear mixed models indicated z-BMI moderated tnfluencing these momentary associations and the extent to which these momentary associations prospectively predict weight change. Nursing is a stressful occupation with high rates of sickness absence. To date, there are no meta-analyses that statistically determined the correlates of sickness absence in this population. This meta-analysis examined organizational and psychosocial predictors of sickness absence among nursing staff. As a registered systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42017071040), which followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, five databases (CINAHL, PROQuest Allied, PROQuest database theses, PsycINFO, PubMed) were reviewed to examine predictors of sickness absence in nurses and nursing assistants between 1990 and 2019. The Population/Intervention/Comparison/Outcome tool was used to support our searches. Effect sizes were analysed using random-effects model.     Breech presentation is associated with increased rates of maternal and perinatal morbidity regardless of mode of delivery. After the results of Term Breech Trial, most of the countries adopted the protocol of cesarean section for term breech delivery because of which breech vaginal delivery is becoming rare. The aim of this study is to evaluate short-term maternal and perinatal outcomes of breech vaginal delivery at a tertiary care hospital in Nepal.

    A retrospective review of case records of all women who had vaginal breech delivery from April 13, 2016, to April 12, 2018, was conducted, over a period of two years. Available demographic variables, obstetric characteristics, details of labor, postpartum complications, and perinatal complications were recorded and analyzed.

    Out of 21,768 cases of deliveries during the study period, the incidence of term breech deliveries was 528 (2.4%) among which the mode of only 84 (17.8%) deliveries was vaginal. Most of the deliveries were unplanned and were conducted because emergency cesarean section could not be performed. Three (3.6%) women had postpartum hemorrhage, and four (4.8%) had entrapment of aftercoming head, two of them requiring Dührssen incisions. Adverse perinatal outcomes were seen in 23.8% of such deliveries with <7 APGAR score at 5 minutes in 20.2%, neonatal admission in 17.7%, and perinatal mortality in 8.3%. The perinatal mortality was significantly associated with birthweight less than 2500 grams as compared to birthweight ≥2500 grams (21.1% versus 4.6%;
    =0.043).

With improvements in the quality of care, more patients with SCA survive into adulthood with an associated increase in the frequency of end-organ damage and chronic complications such as chronic leg ulcers (CLUs). These ulcers rarely occur in the first decade of life and are recurrent, painful, and slow-to-heal. This study tested the hypothesis that coagulation is enhanced in SCA patients with CLU. 145 participants (50 SCA with CLU, 50 SCA without CLU, and 45 with haemoglobin AA) were assessed to determine their coagulation profile using selected tests of coagulation. The SCA with the CLU group had the lowest mean haemoglobin (Hb) concentration. SCA patients with and without CLUs had elevated mean platelet counts, shorter mean aPTT, and marginally prolonged mean PT  compared to HbAA patients. SCA with CLUs patients had a significantly shortened aPTT than those without CLUs (p = 0.035) and HbAA (p = 0.009). There were significant differences in the mean PT between SCA with CLUs patients and HbAA (p = 0.017); SCA without CLU and HbAA (p = 0.014). SCA with and without CLUs patients had higher mean D-dimer levels compared to HbAA. There was a negative correlation between Hb concentration and duration of CLU (r = -0.331, p = 0.021). In conclusion, our study demonstrates a heightened hypercoagulability in SCA patients with CLUs. We did not test for platelet activation, and it is not clear what role, if any, the enhanced hypercoagulability plays in the pathogenesis of CLUs in SCA. It will be useful to ascertain if antiplatelet agents or/and anticoagulants quicken the healing of CLUs in SCA patients.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the viability and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of dental pulp cells after exposure to HA synthesized from yellowfin tuna bone (THA). Pulp cells were isolated from human-impacted third molar. To evaluate the viability of the pulp cells, the cells were cultured and exposed to various concentrations (6.25 to 200 μg/ml) of THA for 24, 48, and 72 hours. For ALP activity assay, pulp cells were cultured with odontoblastic differentiation media and exposed to THA for 7, 11, and 15 days. ALP activity was then determined using an ALP colorimetric assay kit. Results showed that the viability of the cells was more than 91% after exposure to various concentrations of THA and the cells demonstrated normal cell morphology in all observation periods.

    A total of 133 consecutive patients who underwent MOWHTO were retrospectively enrolled.     Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that preoperative JLO ≥ 3° [odds ratio (OR) 6.940, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.373-20.296, p < 0.001] and preoperative JLCA ≥ 5° (OR 5.723, 95% CI 1.833-17.865, p = 0.008) were statistically significant risk factors for post-MPTA ≥ 95°. Incidences of excessive MPTA following MOWHTO in patients with none, one, and two risk factors preoperatively were 3.7%, 26.7%, and 77.8%, respectively.

    Preoperative JLO ≥ 3° and JLCA ≥ 5° were two significant risk factors for excessive MPTA following MOWHTO. Thus, surgeon should consider other types of osteotomy if these two risk factors are present together preoperatively in MOWHTO candidates.

    Elective implant removal (IR) accounts for up to 30% of all orthopaedic surgeries. While there is general acceptance about the need of implant removal for obvious reasons, such as infections or implant failure, little is known about the beneficial aspects in cases of minor reasons such as patients' wish for IR. Therefore, we initiated this study to define patients' benefit of elective implant removal following plate osteosynthesis of displaced clavicle fractures.

    Prospective evaluation of patients was conducted before implant removal and 6weeks postoperative. Subjective and objective criteria included pain rating on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and active range of motion (ROM) pre- and 6weeks postoperative. Functional scoring included Constant-Murley Score, DASH (Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score), MSQ (Munich Shoulder Questionnaire) and SPADI (Shoulder Pain and Disability Index).

    37 patients were prospectively enrolled in this study and implant removal was performed after 16 ± 6.1months. No re-fractures nor other complications were detected during routine follow up. Functional outcome increased through all scores (Constant score 73.3 ± 14.6 preoperative to 87.4 ± 12.0 postoperative (p = 0.000), MSQ 85.0 ± 7.3 preoperative to 91.8 ± 9.0 postoperative (p = 0.005), DASH Score 7.4 ± 8.2 preoperative to 5.7 ± 9.5 postoperative (p = 0.414), SPADI 93.4 ± 6.6 preoperative to 94.0 ± 10.1 postoperative (p = 0.734).

    Discomfort during daily activities or performing sports as well as limited range of motion were the main reasons for patients' wish for implant removal. We found increased functional outcome parameters and decreased irritation after implant removal. Therefore we suggest implant removal in case of patients' wish and completed fracture consolidation.

    Age, sex, and type of fracture have traditionally been described as prognostic factors for proximal humeral fractures (PHFs). Some non-medical patient-related factors may play a role in the outcome. This paper evaluates the association of comorbidities and socioeconomic factors with clinical outcomes for PHF.

    A total of 217 patients with PHF were evaluated according to Neer's classification with X-ray. Comorbidities were assessed through the Charlson comorbidity index and, non-medical patient-related factors were determined with a 52-item questionnaire concerning personal behaviors such as social activities, family support, economic solvency, and leisure-time activities. The clinical outcome was assessed with the Constant-Murley Score (CMS), with a minimum 1-year follow-up. In this study, MC3T3-E1 cells incubated on CS/PK and PK samples were subjected to diabetic serum (DS) and normal serum (NS); cell attachment, morphology, spreading, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation were compared to assess in vitro osteoblastic functions on the surfaces of different materials. An in vivo test was performed on diabetic rabbits implanted with CS/PK or PK implants into the cranial bone defect to assess the osteointegration ability of the implants. In vitro results showed that diabetes inhibited osteoblastic functions evidenced by impaired morphology and spreading, and decreased attachment, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation compared with the findings under normal conditions.
