With an input picture segmented, the user just needs to sketch a few illustrative strokes to guide the construction of a tensor field for each part of the objects therein. Specifically, we propose a new method which controls, with great precision, the aesthetic layout and artistic drawing of an array of streamlines in each tensor field to emulate the style of hypnotic line art. Given several parameters for streamlines such as density, thickness, and sharpness, our system is capable of generating professional-level hypnotic line art work. We verify our results by recreating an existing correlation analysis with InCorr and validate our correlation panel against a manually created illustration. MV-IGNet leverages different skeleton topologies as multi-views to cooperatively generate complementary action features. For each view, Separable Parametric Graph Convolution (SPG-Conv) enables multiple parameterized graphs to enrich local interaction patterns, which provides strong graph-adaption ability to handle irregular skeleton topologies.     Hypnotic line art is a modern form in which white narrow curved ribbons, with the width and direction varying along each path over a black background, provide a keen sense of 3D objects regarding surface shapes and topological contours. However, the procedure of manually creating such line art work can be quite tedious and time-consuming. In this paper, we present an interactive system that offers a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) scheme for producing hypnotic line art images by integrating and placing evenly-spaced streamlines in tensor fields. With an input picture segmented, the user just needs to sketch a few illustrative strokes to guide the construction of a tensor field for each part of the objects therein. Specifically, we propose a new method which controls, with great precision, the aesthetic layout and artistic drawing of an array of streamlines in each tensor field to emulate the style of hypnotic line art. Given several parameters for streamlines such as density, thickness, and sharpness, our system is capable of generating professional-level hypnotic line art work.     Benefits of revascularization for moderate and severe (≥50%) carotid stenosis were established based on digital subtraction angiography (DSA). We aimed to assess the discrepancy between invasive and non-invasive angiography in a consecutive, prospective cohort of patients with recent stroke and non-invasive imaging suggesting ≥50% ipsilateral carotid stenosis.

    We reviewed prospectively-collected data for consecutive patients admitted with recent stroke/TIA and ≥50% ipsilateral carotid stenosis on non-invasive imaging over 28 months. All patients underwent DSA to confirm the degree of stenosis per NASCET criteria. All patients with <50% stenosis by DSA were treated with medical therapy only and their recurrent event rates were assessed at 6 months.

    148 symptomatic patients with ≥50% ipsilateral carotid stenosis on CTA (82%) and MRA (18%) underwent DSA to confirm degree of stenosis. Median age was 73 years and 64% were male.   • To investigate the lingual artery (LA) position in the tongue base through intraoperative ultrasound (IOU) imaging during transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and evaluate bleeding complications with or without the assistance of IOU.

    Cohort study with historical control.

    Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who underwent TORS for tongue base resection were recruited since 2016. During surgery, ultrasound imaging was employed to identify anatomic parameters of the LA in the tongue base, including distance to the midline and arterial depth and diameter.

    Ninety-three OSA patients (82 men, 88.2%) were analyzed. Mean age was 42.2 ± 10.0 years and body mass index was 29.2 ± 4.5 kg/m
    . Average apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was 58.1 ± 21.4 events/hour. Overall, 70 patients who underwent TORS with IOU had a shorter operation time (191.7 ± 3.8 vs. 220.1 ± 6.6 minutes), lower total blood loss (11.3 ± 10.8 vs. 19.6 ± 26.7 mL), and higher tongue base reduction volume (7.1 ± 2.5 vs. 3.9 ± 1.6 mL) than 23 patients who underwent TORS without IOU. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/pbit.html Significant predictors of arterial depth included higher AHI level during the rapid eye movement sleep (P = .038), larger tonsil size (P = .034), and more elevated Friedman tongue position (P = .012).     The association of community factors and outcomes after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has not been comprehensively described. Using the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (CHRR) and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), this study evaluated the impact of community health status on allogeneic HCT outcomes.

    This study included 18,544 adult allogeneic HCT recipients reported to the CIBMTR by 170 US centers in 2014-2016. Sociodemographic, environmental, and community indicators were derived from the CHRR, an aggregate community risk score was created, and scores were assigned to each patient (patient community risk score [PCS]) and transplant center (center community risk score [CCS]). Higher scores indicated less healthy communities. The impact of PCS and CCS on patient outcomes after allogeneic HCT was studied.

    The median age was 55 years (range, 18-83 years). The median PCS was -0.21 (range, -1.37 to 2.10; standard deviation [SD], 0.42), and the median CCt center location and allogeneic HCT outcomes.
    Bilateral neck exploration (BNE) is the traditional approach to sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism. With the availability of the preoperative imaging techniques and intraoperative parathyroid hormone assays, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) is fast becoming the favoured surgical approach.

    To assess the effects of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) guided by preoperative imaging and intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring versus bilateral neck exploration (BNE) for the surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism.

    We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, WHO ICTRP and ClinicalTrials.gov. The date of the last search of all databases was 21 October 2019. There were no language restrictions applied.

    We included randomised controlled trials comparing MIP to BNE for the treatment of sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism in persons undergoing surgery for the first time.

    Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts for relevance. Two review authors independently screeneystematic review did not provide clear evidence for the superiority of MIP over BNE. However, it was limited by low-certainty to very low-certainty evidence.
    The success rates of MIP and BNE at six months were comparable. There were similar results at five years, but these were only based on one study.     During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic of Spring 2020, Denmark was one of the first countries to introduce lockdown measures, including closing of all daycare centers. Following the reopening of daycare centers, Danish Health Authorities implemented a mandatory intensive hand hygiene regimen.

    To examine the occurrence and point prevalence of hand eczema as a consequence of more intensive hand hygiene among Danish children attending daycare.

    The heads of 1667 daycare centers in Denmark were contacted and asked to forward a link to a questionnaire to parents of the children attending the daycare center.

    Among 6858 children, 12.1% had hand eczema before reopening of daycare centers, whereas 38.3% reported hand eczema after the children returned to daycare. Of the children who never had hand eczema, 28.6% developed hand eczema after returning to daycare. The risk of hand eczema was significantly associated with atopic dermatitis, female gender, higher age, and frequency of handwashing.

    Following the implemented hygiene regimen, a high proportion of young children rapidly developed hand eczema.

Cohort study with historical control. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who underwent TORS for tongue base resection were recruited since 2016. Following the reopening of daycare centers, Danish Health Authorities implemented a mandatory intensive hand hygiene regimen. To examine the occurrence and point prevalence of hand eczema as a consequence of more intensive hand hygiene among Danish children attending daycare. The heads of 1667 daycare centers in Denmark were contacted and asked to forward a link to a questionnaire to parents of the children attending the daycare center. Among 6858 children, 12.1% had hand eczema before reopening of daycare centers, whereas 38.3% reported hand eczema after the children returned to daycare. Of the children who never had hand eczema, 28.6% developed hand eczema after returning to daycare. The risk of hand eczema was significantly associated with atopic dermatitis, female gender, higher age, and frequency of handwashing. Following the implemented hygiene regimen, a high proportion of young children rapidly developed hand eczema.

    Anastomotic leakage (AL) is still a common and feared complication after low anterior resection (LAR) for rectal cancer. The multifactorial pathophysiology of AL and lack of standardised treatment options requires a multi-modal approach to improve long-term anastomotic integrity. The objective of the IMARI-trial is to determine whether the one-year anastomotic integrity rate in patients undergoing LAR for rectal cancer can be improved using a multi-interventional program.

    IMARI is a multicentre prospective clinical effectiveness trial, whereby current local practice (control cohort) will be evaluated, and subsequently compared to results after implementation of the multi-interventional program (intervention cohort). Patients undergoing LAR for rectal cancer will be included. The multi-interventional program includes three preventive interventions (mechanical bowel preparation with oral antibiotics, tailored full splenic flexure mobilization and intraoperative fluorescence angiography using indocyanine grerence, with 80% statistical power.

    The IMARI-trial is designed to evaluate whether a multi-interventional program can improve long-term anastomotic integrity after rectal cancer surgery. We explored differences in microbial composition and diagnostic accuracy of mNGS for the 3 specimen types.

    Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IVA, also known as Morquio A syndrome, is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in the enzyme N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase. Early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of this progressive, multisystem disease by enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) can lead to improved outcomes and reduced mortality.

    This report documents the diagnostic journey and treatment with ERT of three siblings with MPS IVA. Clinical outcome measures included growth, endurance, imaging, cardiac, respiratory, ophthalmology, and laboratory evaluations.

    Piroplasms are vector-borne intracellular hemoprotozoan parasites that infect wildlife and livestock. Wildlife species are reservoir hosts to a diversity of piroplasms and play an important role in the circulation, maintenance and evolution of these parasites. The potential for likely spillover of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic piroplasm parasites from wildlife to livestock is underlined when a common ecological niche is shared in the presence of a competent vector.

    To investigate piroplasm diversity in wildlife and the cattle population of the greater Kafue ecosystem, we utilized PCR to amplify the 18S rRNA V4 hyper-variable region and meta-barcoding strategy using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform and amplicon sequence variant (ASV)-based bioinformatics pipeline to generate high-resolution data that discriminate sequences down to a single nucleotide difference.

    A parasite community of 45 ASVs corresponding to 23 species consisting of 4 genera of Babesia, Theileria, Hepatozoon and Colpodella, e was informative. Our results illustrated the diversity of piroplasma and the specificity of their hosts. They led us to speculate a possible ecological cycle including transmission from wildlife to domestic animals in the greater Kafue ecosystem. All patients had a negative immunoreactant deposition in conjunctival biopsy. Mean follow-up time was 6 years (range, 18-197 months). Three patients had progression of conjunctival scarring. Worsening of vision occurred in 4 patients due to corneal complications, including ulceration, perforation and scarring.

Characterizing insect P450s that detoxify mycotoxins can be useful for developing biological remediation technologies and for ensuring the safety of insects reared for human or livestock consumption.
    Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy is the standard adjuvant treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder carcinoma (NMIBC) with carcinoma in situ, in addition to tumour resection. We aimed to study BCG complications that preclude adequate treatment of NMIBC in an Asian population.

    This retrospective study was conducted using a large, prospectively maintained bladder cancer database. 336 patients received intravesical BCG for bladder cancer in our institution between 2004 and 2016, with an average follow-up of 63 months.

    The study included 258 (76.8%) male and 78 (23.2%) female patients. Median age at diagnosis of bladder cancer was 69 (range 17-94) years. Median number of BCG instillation was 6 (range 1-27). 52 (15.5%) patients received maintenance therapy. The most common complications included urinary tract infection with or without sepsis (n = 18, 5.4%), haematuria (n = 9, 2.7%) and acute urinary retention (n = 4, 1.2%). 93.3% of the patients with complications presented early, within one month of completion of therapy. 22 out of 30 complications were Clavien-Dindo grade ≤ 2. 10 (33.3%) patients were admitted to hospital because of BCG-related adverse effects. The most common reasons for termination were urosepsis (2/30, 6.7%) and acute urinary retention (2/30, 6.7%). Patients aged ≥ 80 years at diagnosis were at higher risk of developing BCG-related complications (19.0% vs. 7.5%, p = 0.01).

This retrospective cohort and subgroup study showed that intravesical BCG therapy is well tolerated and has a low incidence of complications even in the elderly and patients with multiple comorbidities.There are few reports on the coexistence of cardiac amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis and light chain deposition disease (LCDD), despite their similar pathophysiologies caused by plasma-cell dyscrasia. Herein, we report the coexistence of these diseases. A 59-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of exertional dyspnea and hypotension. Renal dysfunction of unknown etiology had been present for 4 years and hemodialysis had been introduced. Severe systolic and diastolic cardiac dysfunction was apparent, accompanied with dilatation and granular sparkling, but not with left ventricular hypertrophy. Skin cancers and infections are well-studied complications that can cause death and/or allograft rejection. Other cutaneous drug reactions, such as inflammatory manifestations, have a high prevalence but are rarely studied. We analyzed these manifestations' prevalence and their association with immunosuppressants in transplant recipients from a Brazilian tertiary center. Among 532 SOTRs followed at our dermatology clinic, 60 (11.3%) developed some cutaneous adverse reactions to the immunosuppressants, with a median age at transplantation of 50.5 years and a median life span posttransplantation of seven years. Acneiform eruption was the most common drug reaction found (21 patients, 30.4%), followed by diffuse non-scarring alopecia (16 patients, 23.1%), lymphedema (10 patients, 14.5%), gingival hyperplasia (7 patients, 10.1%), hypertrichosis (6 patients, 8.7%) and sebaceous hyperplasia (9 patients, 13.

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation, which is progressive and not fully reversible. In patients with COPD, body mass index (BMI) is an important parameter associated with health outcomes, e.g. mortality and health-related quality of life. However, so far no study evaluated the association of BMI and health care expenditures across different COPD severity grades. We used claims data and documentation data of a Disease Management Program (DMP) from a statutory health insurance fund (AOK Bayern). Patients were excluded if they had less than 4 observations in the 8 years observational period. Generalized additive mixed models with smooth functions were used to evaluate the association between BMI and health care expenditures, stratified by severity of COPD, indicated by GOLD grades 1-4. We included 30,682 patients with overall 188,725 observations. In GOLD grades 1-3 we found an u-shaped relation of BMI and expenditures, where patients with a BMI of 30 or slightly above had the lowest and underweight and obese patients had the highest health care expenditures. Contrarily, in GOLD grade 4 we found an almost linear decline of health care expenditures with increasing BMI. In terms of expenditures, the often reported obesity paradox in patients with COPD was clearly reflected in GOLD grade 4, while in all other severity grades underweight as well as severely obese patients caused the highest health care expenditures. This study assessed the impacts of single or combined exposure to Cr and Cu on embryonic development, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and apoptosis in the early development of Bufo gargarizans embryos. The total length, development stage and malformations of embryos were measured, and the mRNA expression of genes related to oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and apoptosis at Gs 18 and Gs 22 were determined by RT-qPCR. The results showed that all treatments significantly reduced the total length of embryos, delayed the stage of embryonic development and increased the proportion of malformed embryos. The Cr-Cu mixture treatment showed the greatest suppression of embryonic development and induced the highest rate of embryo malformation, compared to individual Cr and Cu treatments. In addition, the expression levels of oxidative stress genes (HSP90, *** and GPx) and fatty acid β-oxidation-related genes (ACOXL, ECHS1 and SCP) showed an up-regulated trend in treatments compared to control groups. Conversely, the lipid synthesis-related mRNA gene expressions (KAR, TECR, ACSL3 and ACSL4) were down-regulated. Among them, the Cr-Cu mixture had the greatest impact on lipid metabolism gene expression. Using a modified-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method, we observed that cell-free DNA (CF-DNA) and myeloperoxidase DNA (MPO-DNA) in patients With EH and HHCY were significantly higher. The NET formation was also positively correlated with homocysteine levels, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and hypercoagulable markers (thrombin-antithrombin complex, D-dimers). Furthermore, neutrophils from patients in EH with HHCY were found to be predisposed to amplified NET release when compared to patients in EH without HHCY or CTR. Coagulation function assays showed that NETs in patients With EH and HHCY resulted in a significantly increased ability to generate thrombin and fibrin than in those in EH without HHCY or CTR.

  • Soil has been identified as an important source of exposure to a variety of chemical and biological contaminants. Toxoplasma gondii is one of those potential biological contaminants associated with serious health effects in pregnant women and immunocompromised patients. Gardening or consumption of homegrown vegetables may present an important route of T. gondii infection via accidental ingestion of soil. In the Netherlands, there is quantitative information on the risk of T. gondii infection via meat products, but not on the risk of infection through soil. The objective of this study was to develop a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model for estimating the risk associated with T. gondii exposure via accidental soil ingestion in the Netherlands. In order to obtain the needed information, a magnetic capture method for detection of T. gondii oocysts in soil samples was developed, and T. gondii DNA was detected using qPCR targeting the 529 bp repeat element. The method was shown to provide 95% probability of detection (95% CI 88-100%) when at least 34 oocysts are present in 25 g of soil. T. gondii DNA was detected in 5 of 148 soil samples with interpretable results (3%, 95% CI 1.5-7.7%). Results for 18 samples were not interpretable due to PCR inhibition. The estimated amount of oocysts presented in qPCR positive samples was quantified by a linear model, and the amount varied from 8 to 478 in 25 g of soil. The estimated incidence rate of T. gondii infection from the QMRA model via soil varied from 0.3 to 1.8 per 1000 individuals per day. Several data gaps (e.g., soil contamination/ingestion and oocysts viability) have been identified in this study, the structure of the model can be applied to obtain more accurate estimates of the risk of T. gondii infection via soil when data become available.The anaerobic treatment of food wastes (FW) for resource recovery has been extensively studied. However, the information on the traits of functional genes and enzymes for substrates metabolisms and their associations with microbial community are little. In this study, the influences of eggshells conditioning on the substrates metabolism for volatile fatty acids production (VFAs) in the process of FW fermentation were investigated at genetic levels by using the metatranscriptomic approach. The obtained results suggested that the critical genes involved in the carbohydrate and protein metabolisms (i.e. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ch4987655.html pgmB, GPI, glsA, pyrB and etc.) were up-regulated in the eggshell-conditioned reactor, which were beneficial to the bioconversion of macromolecule organics during FW fermentation. Moreover, the functional genes related with the intermediate products metabolism (i.e. pyruvate acid, butanoate) also exhibited differential genetic expression levels, which resulted in the alteration of microbial metabolic pathways and contributed to the acetic and butyric acids accumulation. In addition, a preliminary association of microbial distribution and genetic expressions was analyzed. The distinct distribution of microbial community in different FW fermentation systems affected the corresponding microbial contribution to those genetic expression levels of metabolic enzymes involved in VFAs production. This study would provide new insights of the underlying mechanism of VFAs promotion in the eggshell-conditioned FW fermentation process from the perspectives of substrates metabolisms at genetic and functional traits.Using manure compost (**) as a substitute for chemical fertilizer (CF) has been regarded as an effective strategy to promote sustainable crop production. Compared to the CF strategy, the majority of midpoint impact categories and all assessed damage categories (except for human health and resources in MCB10) were mitigated using the compost strategies. Furthermore, as the biochar application rate increased, the biochar-amended ** strategies remarkably decreased the impacts on the global warming potential, stratospheric ozone depletion, and land use, and greatly increased the impacts on ozone formation (human health), fine particulate matter formation, and terrestrial acidification. Overall, biochar-amended ** with a biochar addition rate of 5% (MCB5) is recommended as the optimal strategy due to its relatively low environmental impact. Moreover, combined with the results of the sensitivity analysis, biogenic air pollutant emissions derived from the compost and biochar production stages were identified as the most important hotspots contributing to the undesirable environmental impacts. Of these, Mn is unique in that it has a significant background concentration and is seldom studied as a contaminant but is potentially a significant toxin derived from dusts regionally. Here we examine the distribution, redistribution, speciation and bioavailability of the Mn-contaminated top soils affected by atmospheric emissions adjacent to the ferroalloy plant. Four sites, variably located in the study area in terms of both distance and direction from the plant, were considered as representative of increasing levels of industrial influence. Soil profiles showed that metal concentrations (measured by X-ray fluorescence) varied considerably by location, i.e. higher in the sites closer to the plant and also at the surface level, although distributed throughout the top 15 cm, suggesting appreciable redistribution possibly due to soil mixing or infiltration.
