The PFMT initiated preoperatively significantly reduced the incidence of persistent urinary incontinence at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively with an OR of 0.58 (95% CI, 0.41-0.81), 0.57 (95% CI, 0.43-0.74), and 0.38 (95% CI, 0.17-0.83). There was no difference in improvement in patients' incontinence at 12 months postoperatively [OR = 1.31 (95% CI, 0.65-2.63)].

Total energy administered for the ablation of the stone was obtained from the registry of the HoYAG laser and recorded to the follow-up forms. The constant value was calculated for each stone, and the final mean value was figured out by calculation of the mean of all constant values.

    The association between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and anogenital carcinomas is well established. However, despite its anatomic adjacency, the relationship between HPV and urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) is less clear. Recent meta-analysis and case-control studies demonstrated a significant relationship between the presence of HPV DNA and UCB. The aim of this clinical study was to compare the 2-year follow-up results of HPV-positive and HPV-negative UCB patients to evaluate the prognostic value of HPV DNA positivity in UCB.

    The study included patients with stage pTa and pT1 UCB who underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of HPV DNA between January 1 and November 30, 2018. Based on their PCR results, 19 HPV-positive and 38 HPV-negative UCB patients who had regular follow-up in our clinic were evaluated in terms of tumor recurrence and disease progression over a 2-year follow-up period.

    There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age, follow-up time, smoking, or tumor grade (P= .576, P= .368, P= .080, and P= .454). Tumor recurrence was observed at least once in 47.3% (n=9) of the 19 HPV-positive patients and 36.8% (n=14) of the 38 HPV-negative patients (P= .445).     This study aims to evaluate the effects of action research on neobladder function training in patients with orthotopic ileal neobladders.

    A total of 68 patients with orthotopic ileal neobladders were randomly divided into two groups a control group (31 patients) and an experimental group (37 patients). Patients in the control group received neobladder function training, while patients in the experimental group received neobladder function training based on the action research method. The effects of neobladder function training in all patients were evaluated after three months.

The time required to perform the three-site and seven-site measurements were also recorded. A paired samples t-test was used to assess if there was a difference between the three-site and the seven-site body fat percentage measurements with the use of the BodyMetrix™ . The three-site method (23.21 ± 3.61) was significantly lower (p less then 0.001) compared to the seven- site method (25.75 ± 4.39). On average, the three-site technique took 2 minutes and 13 seconds less than the seven-site technique.The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether Critical Power (CP) and Functional Threshold Power (FTP) can be used interchangeably for a highly-trained group of cyclists and triathletes. For this study, two separate ONCs were implemented throughout two seasons (summer and winter) to formulate a ONC group (n = 18; 60 ± 12yrs). Previous WE-Can graduates were used as a control group (n = 160; 59 ± 11yrs) for this study. Psychological and physiological assessments were administered in a pre- and post-test. In addition, nature relatedness (NR; ones' relationship with nature) was measured at the beginning, middle, and end of WE-Can. Following five weeks, the ONC began and participants tracked the days they experienced nature for at least thirty-minutes (24 ± 6 days), for a thirty-day period. The ONC finished concurrently with WE-Can where post-evaluations and focus groups were administered immediately following. No additional gain in overall health was found between groups. However, aerobic fitness and fatigue significantly improved for the ONC group. This was supported by frequent activities and self-reported restoration of the mind while experiencing nature. The objective of this study is to compare the chronic effects of low-intensity RT performed with soft BFR (BFR) vs. high-intensity (HI) and low-intensity RT (CON) without BFR on BP and heart rate variability (HRV) indices in older adults. Thirty-two physically inactive participants (72 ± 7 yrs) performed RT for upper and lower limbs (50-min sessions, 3 times/week) for 12 weeks, being assigned into three groups a) BFR; 30% of 1 repetition maximum (RM) with BFR corresponding to 50% of arterial occlusion pressure; b) HI; 70% of 1RM without BFR; c) CON; 30% of 1 RM without BFR. Resting BP and HRV were assessed at rest in the supine position, before and after exercise interventions. The delivery of clinical proton pencil beams ranging from 70 to 200 MeV incident on a water phantom was simulated using Geant4 software (version 10.4). The simulation included a CC similar to the configuration of a Polaris J3 CC designed to image prompt gammas (PGs) emitted during proton beam irradiation for the purpose of in vivo range verification. The interaction positions and energies of secondary particles in each CC detector module were scored. For a 150-MeV proton beam, a total of 156,688(575) secondary particles per 108 protons, primarily composed of gamma rays (46.31%), neutrons (41.37%), and electrons (8.88%), were found to reach the camera modules, and 79.37% of these particles interacted with the modules. Strategies for using CCs for proton range verification should include methods of reducing the large neutron backgrounds and low-energy non-PG radiation.     To address this question and identify gaps in knowledge, we utilized the methodology of a scoping review to interrogate risk of infection and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with iatrogenic and inborn humoral immunodeficiency states based on existing literature.

    Among patients with iatrogenic B-cell depletion, particularly with agents targeting CD20, our analysis found increased risk of severe COVID-19 and death across a range of underlying disease states. The delivery of clinical proton pencil beams ranging from 70 to 200 MeV incident on a water phantom was simulated using Geant4 software (version 10.4). The simulation included a CC similar to the configuration of a Polaris J3 CC designed to image prompt gammas (PGs) emitted during proton beam irradiation for the purpose of in vivo range verification. The interaction positions and energies of secondary particles in each CC detector module were scored. For a 150-MeV proton beam, a total of 156,688(575) secondary particles per 108 protons, primarily composed of gamma rays (46.31%), neutrons (41.37%), and electrons (8.88%), were found to reach the camera modules, and 79.37% of these particles interacted with the modules. Strategies for using CCs for proton range verification should include methods of reducing the large neutron backgrounds and low-energy non-PG radiation. Teamwork builds on employee cohesion and reduces medical and nursing errors, resulting in greater patient satisfaction and improved healthcare. Effective teamwork not only improves efficiency and patient safety but leads to a healthier and happier workplace, reducing burnout among healthcare professionals. The purpose of this paper is to describe the findings of a pilot project on an acute medical ward in Western Australia. The aim was to understand the participants perceived level of teamwork to support future work practices and ultimately patient care.

    The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is now established, occurring at a time of winter pressure on acute care in the NHS. This is likely to be more challenging then the first wave for the diagnosis of COVID-19 because of the similar symptomology with other respiratory conditions highly prevalent in winter. This study sought to understand the care pathways in place in UK NHS hospitals during the first wave (March-July 2020) for identification of patients with COVID-19 and to learn lessons to inform optimal testing strategies within the COVID-19 National Diagnostic Research and Evaluation Platform (CONDOR).

    Sixteen hospital-based clinicians from 12 UK NHS Trusts covering 10 different specialties were interviewed following a semi-structured topic guide. Data were coded soon after the interviews and analysed thematically.

    We developed a diagrammatic, high-level visualisation of the care pathway describing the main clinical decisions associated with the diagnosis and management of patients with suspecsion of rapid testing at admission should be given to hospitals with limited access to laboratory services and single room availability. Access to rapid testing is essential for urgent decisions related to emergency surgery, maternity services and organ transplant. The pathway and prioritization of need will inform the economic modelling, clinical evaluations, and implementation of new clinical tests in UK.
    Hallux valgus deformity has been reported to be associated with increased postural sway. However, the direction and magnitude of postural sway associated with hallux valgus remain inconclusive. We assessed the association between hallux valgus deformity and postural sway using a force plate.

    The subjects were 169 healthy volunteers, > 40 years old (63 males, 106 females, average age 66.0 ± 12.4 years old), who took part in an annual medical examination. We investigated the photographic hallux valgus angle (°), total trajectory length of the gravity center fluctuation (mm), area of the center of pressure (mm
    ), mediolateral and anteroposterior postural sway (mm) in a standing position with 2-legged stance and eyes open, hallux pain (Numerical Rating Scale), trunk and lower limb muscle mass (kg). We classified the subjects into a hallux valgus group (n = 44, photographic hallux valgus angle of 1 or both feet ≥ 20°) and a no hallux valgus group (n = 125, photographic hallux valgus angle of both feet < 20°) and analyzed the relationship between hallux valgus and postural sway.

    The anteroposterior postural sway in the hallux valgus group (6.5 ± 2.8) was significantly greater than in the no hallux valgus group (5.4 ± 2.2, p = 0.014), and the lower limb muscle mass in the hallux valgus group (12.4 ± 2.2) was significantly smaller than in the no hallux valgus group (13.5 ± 3.2, p = 0.016). The total value of the photographic hallux valgus angle on both feet was positively correlated with the anteroposterior postural sway (p = 0.021) and negatively correlated with the lower limb muscle mass (p = 0.038).     The impact of Covid-19 and its long-term consequences is not yet fully understood. Sick leave can be seen as an indicator of health in a working age population, and the present study aimed to investigate sick-leave patterns after Covid-19, and potential factors predicting longer sick leave in hospitalised and non-hospitalised people with Covid-19.

    The present study is a comprehensive national registry-based study in Sweden with a 4-month follow-up. All people who started to receive sickness benefits for Covid-19 during March 1 to August 31, 2020, were included. Predictors of sick leave ≥1 month and long Covid (≥12 weeks) were analysed with logistic regression in the total population and in separate models depending on inpatient care due to Covid-19.

    A total of 11,955 people started sick leave for Covid-19 within the inclusion period. The median sick leave was 35 days, 13.3% were on sick leave for long Covid, and 9.0% remained on sick leave for the whole follow-up period. There were 2960 people who receicioeconomic factor could clearly predict longer sick leave, indicating the complexity of this condition. The group needing long sick leave after Covid-19 seems to be heterogeneous, indicating a knowledge gap.

    From 14 February to 29 March 2020, an online survey was performed in both 605 health care workers and 1151 non-health care workers. Based on the somatization dimension score of the Symptom Checklist-90, participants were divided into non-SOM group and SOM group.

    Health care workers had higher prevalence rate of SOM (p < 0.001) than non-health care workers, with an OR of 1.70 (95% CI, 1.22-2.36, p = 0.002). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that in non-health care workers, the risk factors of SOM included other ethnicities, insomnia, and suicide, while in health care workers, the risk factors included working 6-8 h per day, and working ≥10 h per day during COVID-19 outbreak.

    Our research suggests that both non-health care workers and health care workers have a relatively high prevalence of somatization. However, the related factors for somatization in both groups are significantly different, showing that medical service-related factors are associated with somatization in health care workers, while demographic and clinical factors are associated with somatization in non-health care workers.

With the aim of finding the most effective radioprotector, we investigated the effects of selected amino acids which might have chemical DNA-repair functions against therapeutic carbon ions. In the current study, we employed five amino acids tryptophan (Trp), cysteine (Cys), methionine (Met), valine (Val) and alanine (Ala). Samples of supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA with a 17 mM amino acid were prepared in TE buffer (10 mM Tris, 1 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, pH 7.5). Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was also used in assays of the 0.17 mM amino acid. The samples were irradiated with carbon-ion beams (290 MeV/u) on 6 cm spread-out Bragg peak at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences-Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba, Japan. Breaks in the DNA were detected as changes in the plasmids and quantified by subsequent electrophoresis on agarose gels. DNA damage yields and protection factors for each amino acid were calculated as ratios relative to reagent-free controls. Trp and Cys showed radioprotective effects against plasmid DNA damage induced by carbon-ion beam, both in PBS and TE buffer, comparable to those of Met. The double-strand break (DSB) yields and protective effects of Trp were comparable to those of Cys. The yields of both single-strand breaks and DSBs correlated with the scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals (rate constant for scavenging hydroxyl radicals multiplied by the amino acid concentration) in bulk solution. These data indicate that the radioprotective effects of amino acids against plasmid DNA damage induced by carbon ions could be explained primarily by the scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals. These findings suggest that some amino acids, such as Trp, Cys and Met, have good potential as radioprotectors for preventing DNA damage in normal tissues in carbon-ion therapy.
    There is currently a lack of information regarding ocular tropism and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Globally, the cumulative number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases is increasing daily. Thus the potential for ocular transmission and manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 requires more investigation.

    A systematic search of electronic databases for ocular transmission and manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 was performed. Pooled cross-sectional studies were used for conducting a meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of ocular transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to the respiratory system and ocular manifestations (associated symptoms) of SARS-CoV-2.

    The highest prevalence of SARS-CoV-2-positive tears using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was found to be 7.5%. However, the highest prevalence of ocular conjunctivitis associated with SARS-CoV-2 was 32%. Thus, SARS-CoV-2 can evidently infect the eye, as revealed in the conjunctival secretions of COVID-19 patients.

With the aim of finding the most effective radioprotector, we investigated the effects of selected amino acids which might have chemical DNA-repair functions against therapeutic carbon ions. In the current study, we employed five amino acids tryptophan (Trp), cysteine (Cys), methionine (Met), valine (Val) and alanine (Ala). Samples of supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA with a 17 mM amino acid were prepared in TE buffer (10 mM Tris, 1 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, pH 7.5). Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was also used in assays of the 0.17 mM amino acid. The samples were irradiated with carbon-ion beams (290 MeV/u) on 6 cm spread-out Bragg peak at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences-Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba, Japan. Breaks in the DNA were detected as changes in the plasmids and quantified by subsequent electrophoresis on agarose gels. DNA damage yields and protection factors for each amino acid were calculated as ratios relative to reagent-free controls. Trp and Cys showed radioprotective effects against plasmid DNA damage induced by carbon-ion beam, both in PBS and TE buffer, comparable to those of Met. The double-strand break (DSB) yields and protective effects of Trp were comparable to those of Cys. The yields of both single-strand breaks and DSBs correlated with the scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals (rate constant for scavenging hydroxyl radicals multiplied by the amino acid concentration) in bulk solution. These data indicate that the radioprotective effects of amino acids against plasmid DNA damage induced by carbon ions could be explained primarily by the scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals. Globally, the cumulative number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases is increasing daily. Thus the potential for ocular transmission and manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 requires more investigation. A systematic search of electronic databases for ocular transmission and manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 was performed. Pooled cross-sectional studies were used for conducting a meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of ocular transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to the respiratory system and ocular manifestations (associated symptoms) of SARS-CoV-2. The highest prevalence of SARS-CoV-2-positive tears using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was found to be 7.5%. However, the highest prevalence of ocular conjunctivitis associated with SARS-CoV-2 was 32%.     Failed implant removal using a high-frequency electrosurgical device (HFED) has been reported to be less invasive than other surgical techniques. We sought to clarify the mechanism of removal torque reduction in an implant by heating with HFED.

    Sixty-eight Wistar rats received titanium implants on the maxillary bone 4weeks after extraction of the first and second molars. The control group was sacrificed 6weeks after implant installation. In the experimental group, the implant was heated by HFED for 10s using three different power outputs, and samples were collected at 3, 7, and 14days after heating. Removal torque measurement and histological analysis were performed in the control and experimental groups. Implant surfaces were observed using an electron-probe microanalyzer (EPMA). Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test at a significance level of 5%.

    The removal torque could not be measured in the control group due to fracture of the implant. After heating, the removal torque was measurable without fracture and decreased significantly at 14days as compared with that at 3days (p<.05). Heating with "min" power output resulted in a significantly smaller blank lacunae area and fewer osteoclasts at 14days after heating (p<.05). EPMA revealed bone matrix adherence to outer surface of heated implant.

  • After a comprehensive geriatric assessment, frailty syndrome was found in 57 patients (55.9%). In general, both scales showed solid performance, and differences between them in the sample were minimal. As the CGA showed a prevalence of frailty of 55.9%, a similar prevalence threshold for the ZFS (i.e., 64% at the threshold ≥3 could be assessed). The completion time for our scale was less than two minutes, and staff required no training beforehand. Its sensitivity was 83.9%, and its specificity was 67.5%. Its positive predictive value was 80%, and its negative predictive value was 73%. The Pearson correlations between the geriatric scores were all strong and roughly equivalent to each other. Conclusions Our frailty screening scale is simple, relevant, and rapid (taking less than two minutes).Lactobacilli species are an effective biotherapeutic alternative against bacterial infections and intestinal inflammatory disorders. However, it is important to evaluate their beneficial properties, before considering them as probiotics for medical use. In this study we evaluated some probiotic properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus rhamnosus KLSD, Lactobacillus helveticus IMAU70129, and Lactobacillus casei IMAU60214 previously isolated from dairy products and as control Lactobacillus casei Shirota. Experimental evaluations revealed that all strains expressed hydrophobicity (25-40%), auto-aggregation (55-60%), NaCl tolerance (1-4%), adhesion to Caco-2 cells (25-33%), partial inhibition on adherence of Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 23219. Cell-free supernatants (CFS) of Lactobacilli also inhibit growth of these pathogens. In immunomodulatory properties a reduction of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and nitric oxide (NO) release was observed in assays with Caco-2 cells stimulated with interleukin-1β (1 ng/mL), or lipopolysaccharide (0.1 µg/mL). Understanding how A. baumannii adapts to different host environments may provide critical insights into strategically targeting this pathogen with novel antimicrobial and biological therapeutics. Exposure to human fluids was previously shown to alter the gene expression profile of a highly drug-susceptible A. baumannii strain A118 leading to persistence and survival of this pathogen. Herein, we explore the impact of human pleural fluid (HPF) and human serum albumin (HSA) on the gene expression profile of a highly multi-drug-resistant strain of A. baumannii AB5075. Generalized estimating equation models were constructed after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and sensitization to house dust mites or pollen.

    The PEFR records of 11,222 person-days showed a significant decrease in the morning and evening in autumn than in winter by -1.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], -3.73 to -0.15) and -2.1% (95% CI, -3.80 to -0.37), respectively. The morning PEFR was significantly lower in April, August, October, and December than in January with changes of -4.2% (95% CI, -7.08 to -1.23) in April, -3.1% (95% CI, -5.79 to -0.47) in August, -3.7% (95% CI, -6.09 to -1.21) in October, and -1.9% (95% CI, -3.62 to -0.12) in December. The percentage change of evening PEFR significantly decreased by -3.3% (95% CI, -6.38 to -0.25) in April and by -3.3% (95% CI, -5.56 to -1.07) in October.

Strict preventive measures have been implemented during April and May and then a normalization phase started in our country in June.     A prospective questionnaire-based study was planned and a questionnaire form was sent to the cell-phones of the subjects with pollen allergy followed in our clinic. Number of airborne grass pollens was determined by Burkard volumetric 7-day spore trap.

    A total of 222 pollen allergic patients were included in the study. At the beginning of the pandemic, majority of the subjects were spending time mostly indoors. The rate of home-office workers gradually decreased and the rate of office workers and the number of days at work increased from April to June, significantly. Nasal and ocular symptoms of the patients, also increased in June compared to April and May and, approximately one-third of the patients had less symptoms when compared to the same period of the previous year. The rates of using a face mask and taking a shower on return home were high among the subjects during all season.

    Our study showed that spending less time outside during the pollen season and wearing a mask outdoors reduces exposure to pollens and causes a reduction in symptoms. Thus, strict application of measures that cannot be applied in daily practice can make a significant contribution to the management of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

    A guidance paper proposing methods for preparing individual participant data for meta-analysis from multiple study sources, developed by consultation of relevant guidance and experts in IPD. We present an example of how these steps were applied in checking data for our own IPD meta analysis (IPD-MA).

    We propose five steps of Processing, Replication, Imputation, Merging, and Evaluation to prepare individual participant data for meta-analysis (PRIME-IPD). Using our own IPD-MA as an exemplar, we found that this approach identified missing variables and potential inconsistencies in the data, facilitated the standardization of indicators across studies, confirmed that the correct data were received from investigators, and resulted in a single, verified dataset for IPD-MA.

    The PRIME-IPD approach can assist researchers to systematically prepare, manage and conduct important quality checks on IPD from multiple studies for meta-analyses. Further testing of this framework in IPD-MA would be useful to refine these steps.

Patients carry a germline pathogenic variant in one of the mismatch repair (MMR) genes (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 or PMS2), which encode proteins involved in a post-replicative proofreading and editing mechanism. The clinical presentation of LS is highly heterogeneous, showing high variability in age at onset and penetrance of cancer, which may be partly attributable to the molecular profiles of carcinomas. This review discusses the frequency of alterations in the WNT/B-CATENIN, RAF/MEK/ERK and PI3K/PTEN/AKT pathways identified in all four LS subgroups and how these changes may relate to the 'three pathway model' of carcinogenesis, in which LS CRCs develop from MMR-proficient adenomas, MMR-deficient adenomas or directly from MMR-deficient crypts. We present a case series of three COVID-19 patients who suffered from ALI that occurred during home self-isolation, and that were diagnosed and treated with a significant time-delay due to COVID-19 social implications. To evaluate reviewers' timeliness and review quality for the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (IJROBP) by sex and seniority.
