Seminiferous tubules physically connect to the rete testis through short segments called the transition region (TR). During fetal development, this specialized junction is considered the initial site where testis cords begin to form and to grow in length well beyond birth and into adulthood and form convoluted tubular cores. Mitotic activity of the Sertoli cell, the somatic cell of the epithelium, ceases before puberty, but modified Sertoli cells in the TR remain immature and capable of proliferation. This review presents what is known about this specialized region of the testis, with an emphasis on the morphological, molecular and physiological features, which support the hypothesis that this short region of epithelial transition serves as a specialized niche for undifferentiated Sertoli cells and spermatogonial stem cells. Also, the region is populated by an elevated number of immune cells, suggesting an important activity in monitoring and responding to any leakage of autoantigens, as sperm enter the rete testis. Several structure/function characteristics of the transition region are discussed and compared across species.The liver is a complex organ composed of several cell types organized hierarchically. Among these, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) are specialized vascular cells known to interact with hepatocytes and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and to be involved in the regulation of important hepatic processes in healthy and pathological situations. Protocols for the differentiation of LSECs from human induced pluripotent stem cells, hiPSCs, have been proposed and in-depth analysis by transcriptomic profiling of those cells has been performed. In the present work, an extended analysis of those cells in terms of proteome and metabolome has been implemented. The proteomic analysis confirmed the expression of important endothelial markers and pathways. Among them, the expression of patterns typical of LSECs such as PECAM1, VWF, LYVE1, STAB1 (endothelial markers), CDH13, CDH5, CLDN5, ICAM1, MCAM-CD146, ICAM2, ESAM (endothelial cytoskeleton), NOSTRIN, NOS3 (Nitric Oxide endothelial ROS), ESM1, ENG, MMRN2, THBS1, ANof these cells for future in vitro applications.
Child maltreatment disproportionately affects families experiencing poverty and structural discrimination, including African American (AA) families. The generosity of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may reduce child maltreatment disparities.

Our aim is to understand TANF's impact on the mother's perpetration of child maltreatment and whether the effect differs across AA and White mothers.

Participants are 2457 primary caregiving mothers participating in waves 3 (2001-2003), 4 (2003-2006), and 5 (2007-2010) of the U.S.-based Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing birth cohort study.

We use a difference-in-differences study design to estimate overall and race-specific effects of TANF policies on caregivers' self-report of child neglect and physical and psychological maltreatment measured by the Child-Parent Conflict Tactics Scale. State-level TANF policy exposures include the TANF-to-Poverty Ratio (TPR), maximum cash benefits, time limits, sanctions, diversion payments, and family caps.

A $100 increase in TANF benefits was associated with a reduction of 1.8 reported physical abuse events (Beta=-1.80, 95% CI (-3.29, -0.31)). Imposing a time limit on TANF receipt was associated with an increase of 2.3 reported physical abuse events (Beta=2.27, 95% CI (0.04, 4.50)). No significant differences were found for AA mothers versus White mothers.

In planta13CO2 labeling experiments monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) unraveled the SGA biosynthetic pathways from CO2 photosynthates via early precursors to the SGAs. After a pulse of ~ 700 ppm 13CO2 for four hours, followed by a chase period for seven days, specific 13C-distributions were detected in SGAs from the leaves of the labeled plant. NMR analysis determined the positional 13C-enrichments in α-solanine and α-chaconine characterized by 13C2-pairs in their aglycones. These patterns were in perfect agreement with a mevalonate-dependent biosynthesis of the isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate precursors. The 13C-distributions also suggested cyclization of the 2,3-oxidosqualene precursor into the solanidine aglycone backbone involving a non-stereoselective hydroxylation step of the sterol a mixture of 25S-/25R-epimers of the SGAs.Corn silk has been widely used as a nutritional and medicinal supplement due to its pharmacological properties, but there is a lack of studies that correlate the extracts' chemical composition with their biological activities. Herein, we performed the large-scale chemical characterization of corn silk extracts and used chemometrics to correlate the chemical composition with the biological activities of the extracts. Twenty-two metabolites were identified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS), whereas twelve were identified by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Chemometrics allowed us to discriminate extracts obtained in different organic solvents from in natura and commercial product samples and to pinpoint potential candidate metabolites for the antioxidant and anti-glioma activities. Two flavone glycosides (7 and 8), along with a O-methylated anthocyanidin (26) seems to be the main contributors for the biological activities of the corn silk extracts.
To evaluate the technical success and safety of transbronchial (bronchoscopic) fiducial placement compared to percutaneous CT-guided fiducial placement for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) of lung tumors.

This IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant retrospective study wasperformed at a single tertiary institution. Consecutive patients undergoing lung fiducial placement for purposes of guiding SBRT (CyberKnife®, Accuray, Inc.) between September 2005 to January 2013 were included in the study. Fiducial seeds were placed percutaneously with CT guidance or transbronchially with bronchoscopic guidance. We compared procedure-related complications (pneumothorax, chest tube placement), technical success (defined as implantation enabling adequate treatment planning with CT simulation) and migration rate. The need for repeat procedures and their mode was noted. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher exact and Chi square probability tests.
