These stimuli, through signal transduction, trigger transcription factors that alter the expression of various genes leading to the unfolding of the genetic program. A regulon is conceptually defined as a set of target genes regulated by a transcription factor by physically binding to regulatory motifs to accomplish a specific biological function, such as the CO-FT regulon for flowering timing and fall growth cessation in trees. #link# Only with a clear characterization of regulatory motifs, can candidate target genes be experimentally validated, but motif characterization represents the weakest feature of regulon research, especially in tree genetics. I review here relevant experimental and bioinformatics approaches in characterizing transcription factors and their binding sites, outline problems in tree regulon research, and demonstrate how transcription factor databases can be effectively used to aid the characterization of tree regulons.CuO flower-like material (FM) was prepared via the facile hydrothermal method, and Ag nanoparticles were deposited on the CuO FM to obtain Ag@CuO composite. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was used as the probe molecule on Ag@CuO FM substrate to study surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Serum uric acid (sUA) is a recognized surrogate marker of metabolic derangement. As no information is currently available on sUA levels in adults with PWS, we aimed to analyze sUA in a large cohort of adult patients with PWS in comparison to a control counterpart; secondly, we aimed to investigate the metabolic and non-metabolic determinants of sUA in PWS. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 89 consecutive adult patients with genetically confirmed PWS spanning a wide BMI range (17.2-56.7 kg/m2). As controls, 180 age-, sex- and BMI-matched healthy controls were included. sUA levels were analyzed in relation to the PWS status, metabolic variables, hormone status, body composition, and resting energy expenditure (REE). Bivariate correlation and multivariable regression studies were used to tesn the PWS group adjusted for karyotype, age, sex, FM, FFM, obesity, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol, showed that sUA levels were independently associated with FFM (β = 0.35, p less then 0.0001) and, albeit less significantly, with triglycerides (β = 0.23, p less then 0.05). The introduction of height-normalized FFM (FFM index) in the regression model, however, abrogated the predictive role of FFM on sUA. Conclusions FFM mass is a strong predictor of sUA. PWS is associated to lower sUA levels than controls likely due to genetic predisposition to different body composition and healthier metabolic phenotype. Further studies are warranted to assess purine metabolism and the clinical significance of the FFM index in PWS.The latest tendency of the scientific community regards the development of different classes of green materials able to solve pollution problems caused by industrial and human activity. In this paper, chitosan and diatomite were used to produce a broad-spectrum hybrid adsorbent, either in powder or in monolithic form for environmental pollutant removal. Diatomite-chitosan-based powders and porous diatomite-chitosan hybrids were prepared and characterized by chemical-physical, thermal and morphological analysis. Moreover, their adsorbent capacity towards anionic dye (Indigo Carmine) was also evaluated. Obtained data showed that chitosan improves the adsorption capacity of both systems, increasing the uptake of dye in both diatomite-chitosan systems.The functional food market is one of the fastest growing segments of the global food industry. The aims of this study were to understand the association of demographic characteristics and food choice motives (FCMs) with (a) attitudes toward functional foods and (b) consumption of functional foods in Australian emerging adults. Data were collected through a paper-based and online questionnaire completed by 370 young adults aged between 17 and 29 years. A binomial logistic regression was used to determine the association between demographic characteristics and FCMs with attitudes towards functional foods. The logistic regression model was statistically significant at χ2(11) = 48.310 (p less then 0.001) and explained 18.1% of the variance in attitude towards functional food. Of the several predictors, only the FCMs natural content and weight control were statistically significant. A binomial logistic regression was also used to determine the association between demographic characteristics and FCMs with the consumption of functional foods. The logistic regression model was statistically significant at χ2(9) = 37.499 (p less then 0.001) and explained 14.1% of the variance in functional food consumption. Of the eight predictors, three were statistically significant living situation, natural content and health. Findings highlight that when targeting emerging adults, functional food companies could benefit from promoting the natural and health properties of their products. Furthermore, consumption can be increased by targeting the parents of emerging adults and by designing functional foods that attract emerging adults interested in controlling weight.The aim of this study was to assess the risk of unfavorable outcomes according to the timing of hypotension episodes in cardiac arrest patients. This prospectively conducted multicenter observational study included 1373 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients treated with 33 °C targeted temperature management (TTM). Unfavorable neurological outcome and the incidence of complications were analyzed according to the timing of hypotension. Compared with hypotension before TTM initiation (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.51), hypotension within 6 h after TTM initiation was associated with an increased risk of unfavorable neurologic outcome (aHR 1.693), and after 24 h of TTM, was connected with decreased risk (aHR 1.277). The risk of unfavorable neurological outcome was gradually reduced over time after TTM initiation. Hypotension, persisting both before and during TTM, demonstrated a greater risk (aHR 2) than transient hypotension (aHR 1.265). Hypotension was correlated with various complications. Differences in lactate levels were persistent, regardless of the initial fluid therapy (p less then 0.
