The electroencephalographic (EEG) terms "brief potentially ictal rhythmic discharges" (BIRDs) and "paroxysmal fast activity" (PFA) are considered distinct entities; however, their definitions overlap, and they may have similar clinical significance. We investigated their clinical significance and their association with seizures and the seizure onset zone (SOZ).

We retrospectively identified an adult cohort (July 2015 to March 2018) whose long-term (>12h) EEGs in any setting reported BIRDs (>4Hz, lasting .5-10s) and/or PFA. Different frequency cutoffs for PFA (>13Hz or ≥8Hz) were tested to compare their clinical significance. Patient demographics, clinical history, and EEG features were recorded.

We identified 94 patients with BIRDs/PFA out of 3520 patients (3%); 36 were critically ill (12 with epilepsy), and 58 were noncritically ill (all with epilepsy). The frequency of BIRDs/PFA was largely dependent on EEG background it tended to be slower (theta) in the absence of a posterior dominant rhythrtion of patients with BIRDs/PFA had seizures on EEG, regardless of their frequency (i.e., whether they also qualified as PFA), and their location colocalized with scalp SOZ in all cases. BIRDs appear to be a scalp EEG biomarker of uncontrolled seizure activity and a reliable localizing sign of the SOZ.Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-related disorder that occurs after 20 weeks of gestation. It seriously affects the health of maternity and the fetus. However, the pathogenesis of PE is still unknown. Decidualization deficiency is considered a contributing factor to the development of PE. CTP synthetase (CTPS) which is the rate-limiting enzyme in the CTP de novo biosynthesis, is essential for nucleic acid synthesis and cellular energy metabolism, and often appears as cytoophidium in many cell types. Here, we found that the expression of CTPS was significantly downregulated in decidual tissues of patients with severe PE compared with healthy pregnant women. During in vitro decidualization, changes in CTPS were accompanied by opposite fluctuation of the AMPK signaling pathway. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/alpha-naphthoflavone.html Moreover, the downregulation of CTPS by glutamine analogs or CTPS small interfering RNA inhibited the decidualization process and the AMPK signaling pathway. Investigating the underlying mechanism of action by co-immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry showed that CTPS interacted with ATP synthase (ATPS) and maintained the content of ATP on Day 3 of decidualization. However, when combined with mitochondrial stress protein STRESS-70 instead of ATPS, the concentration of ATP on Day 6 of induction was reduced. Corresponding to this, CTPS was mainly distributes in the cytoplasm on Day 3 of induction, while it appeared both in the cytoplasm and the nucleus on Day 6 in decidualized cells, which was similar to that in cells before induction. In summary, we believe that CTPS plays an important role in decidualization by participating in energy metabolism. Abnormal expression of CTPS in decidualization would lead to abnormal decidualization and consequently result in the occurrence of PE.Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) associated with bone regeneration serve an important role in the treatment of periodontal disease. Long non‑coding RNAs are involved in the osteogenesis of multiple stem cells and can act as a sponge of microRNAs (miRs). The present study aimed to investigate the interaction between Prader Willi/Angelman region RNA 6 (PWAR6) and miR‑106a‑5p, as well as their influences on the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs. hPDLSCs were isolated and cultured in osteogenic medium (OM) or growth medium (GM) for 7 days prior to transfection with PWAR6 overexpression vector, short hairpin RNA PWAR6 or miR‑106a‑5p mimic. The expression levels of runt‑related transcription factor 2, osteocalcin and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) were detected by western blotting and reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR (RT‑qPCR), and the expression levels of PWAR6, miR‑106a‑5p and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined by RT‑qPCR. ALP activity assays and Alizarin red staining were pePDLSCs osteogenesis.Colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the most common cancer types, causes a large number of cancer‑related mortalities annually worldwide. Dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs/miR) are closely associated with the malignant progression of CRC. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the expression and regulatory role of miR‑592 in CRC. It was found that miR‑592 expression was significantly elevated in CRC tissues and cell lines, and was associated with the prognosis of patients. Cellular phenotype assays demonstrated that miR‑592 could promote CRC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Bioinformatics analysis demonstrated that miR‑592 mainly participated in the positive regulation of transcription, as well as the regulation of cell motility. Moreover, miR‑592 targets were enriched in several signaling pathways, such as the 'mTOR' and 'FoxO' signaling pathways. In addition, secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) was identified as a target of miR‑592 in CRC. The present results suggested that miR‑592 acts as an oncogene in CRC, in part, by directly inhibiting SPARC expression. Collectively, the present study provides a novel potential therapeutic strategy for CRC.The beneficial properties of the pineal hormone, melatonin, as a neuroprotective and cardioprotective agent, have been previously identified. Furthermore, melatonin plays essential roles in biological rhythms resynchronization, sleep initiation/maintenance and metabolic, ocular, rheumatological diseases. In addition to these functions, melatonin is known to exert immunomodulation, anti‑inflammatory and anti‑oxidative effects. Due to these properties, coupled with its non‑toxic nature, melatonin has been suggested to limit viral infections; however, melatonin cannot be classified as a viricidal drug. In addition, the recent increase in the number of clinical trials on melatonin's role, as an adjuvant treatment for COVID‑19, has resurged the interest of the scientific community in this hormone. The present short review aimed to improve the understanding of the antiviral/anti‑COVID‑19 profile of melatonin and the clinical trials that have recently been conducted, with respect to its co‑administration in treating individuals with COVID‑19.
