evel outdoor residential exposures to several traffic-related air pollutants, including ambient PAHs, are associated with biomarkers of risk for metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress in children.
Our results suggest that both short- and longer-term estimated individual-level outdoor residential exposures to several traffic-related air pollutants, including ambient PAHs, are associated with biomarkers of risk for metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress in children. The present work summarizes the major research findings related to wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) study of COVID-19 and puts forward a conceptual framework, termed as "Surveillance of Wastewater for Early Epidemic Prediction (SWEEP)" for implementation of WBE. SWEEP framework is likely to tackle few practical issues related to WBE and simultaneously proposes refinements to the approach for better outcome and efficiency to save precious lives around the globe. It is observed that the present pandemic offers an opportunity for SWEEP to get included in routine urban water management to put the humankind at front to stop such pandemic in future or at least be prepared to fight against it. With global collaboration, SWEEP can be fine-tuned to meet diverse needs, making the present and future generations resilient to future viral outbreaks. Recent WBE studies conducted to check for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater revealed that raw sewage samples tested positive to PCR-based assays while the treated samples showed absence of viral titers. Moreover, the lockdown had a positive impact on decreasing the viral loading in sewage. The proposed SWEEP protocol has an advantage over testifying individuals for predicting the stage of pandemic. In this study, magnesium oxide biochar-chitosan composite (MgO-BCR-W) prepared through modification with MgCl2 and chitosan was investigated as an adsorbent for the removal of Cd from the aquatic and soil environment. Kinetic and thermodynamics revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption onto MgO-BCR-W was well fitted by pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacities of rice husk biochar (BCR) and MgO-BCR-W for Cd(II) reached 11.09 mg/g and 59.66 mg/g, respectively. Attractively, the computed values of RL ranged between 0 and 1, suggesting that the adsorption of Cd(II) onto MgO-BCR-W is favourable. Characterisations of the adsorbents revealed that the synergistic effect of surface complexation and precipitation mechanisms played a major role in the removal of Cd. In soil incubation experiment, the addition of MgO-BCR-W at the level of 2% was most effective in Cd stabilization compared to the control, which reduced the content of bioavailable Cd by 22.32%. Furthermore, it reduced the acid extractable Cd by 24.77%, while increased the residual Cd content by 22.24%. https://www.selleckchem.com/ The results demonstrated that MgO-BCR-W could be used as an effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for Cd remediation in both water and soil environment.Intimate coupling of visible-light photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) offers potential for degrading chlorine dioxide bleaching wastewater. In this study, we reported a TiO2-coated sponge biofilm carrier with significant adhesion of TiO2 and the ability to accumulate biomass in its interior. Four mechanisms possibly acting in ICPB were tested separately adsorption of chlorine dioxide bleaching wastewater to the carrier, photolysis, photocatalysis, and biodegradation by the biofilm inside the carrier. The carrier had an adsorption capacity of 17% and 16% for CODcr and AOX, respectively, in the wastewater. The photodegradation rate of wastewater was very low and could be ignored. Both biodegradation (AOX 30.1%, CODcr 33.8%, DOC 26.2%) and photocatalysis (AOX 65.1%, CODcr 71.2%, DOC 62.3%) possessed a certain degradation efficiency of wastewater. However, the removal rate of AOX, CODcr, and DOC in wastewater treatment by protocol ICPB reached 80.3%, 90.5%, and 86.7%. FT-IR and GC-MS analysis showed that the ICPB system had photocatalytic activity on the surface of the porous carrier in vitro, which could transform organic into small molecules for microbial utilization or complete mineralization. Moreover, the biofilm in the interior of the TiO2-coated sponge carrier could mineralize the photocatalytic products, which enhanced the removal of AOX, CODcr, and DOC by more than 15.2%, 20.0%, and 24.0%, respectively. The biofilm in the carrier of the ICPB system evolved, enriched in Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria, microorganisms known to play active roles in the biodegradation of papermaking wastewater.2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was oxidized to produce TEMPO-oxidized cellulose (TOCS) with a nanofunctionalized surface and abundant carboxyl groups. In a batch experiment, three pH values (2, 5 and 7), three modes (single, binary and multiple systems), and systems with inorganic and organic materials were applied to explore the adsorption of coexisting metals and antibiotics on TOCS. The adsorption capacity of TOCS was substantially influenced by these factors, and the adsorption behaviors were also different in these systems. In general, the coordination behaviors and electrostatic attraction between Cd(II) and carboxyl groups were identified as the mechanism employed by the single system, while hydrophobic interactions, π interactions, hydrogen bonding and pore filling contributed to the adsorption of sulfonamides (SAs) on TOCS in the binary system. The bridging effect was determined to be the key mechanism; i.e., most Cd(II) and SAs in the form of [SA-Cd] complexes interacted with carboxyl groups, especially in the presence of high concentrations of Cd(II) and SAs. These adsorption behaviors were determined quantitatively by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, TOCS showed excellent adsorption capacity in a more complex interference system, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 5.83 mg/g.A point-of-care test for detecting schistosome circulating cathodic antigen in urine (POCCCA) has been proposed for mapping infection and defining prevalence thresholds for mass drug administration (MDA). However, there is increasing evidence that POCCCA may yield false-positive results, which requires rigorous specificity evaluation in non-endemic areas. POCCCA was applied in an area known to be free from infection and devoid of any condition for schistosomiasis transmission as part of a multicentre study to evaluate the performance of POCCCA in Brazil's low or potentially endemic settings. Besides POCCCA detection in urine, a search for eggs in stool was performed by Kato-Katz (KK) and Helmintex (HTX) methods. One-hundred-and-seventy-four participants returned urine samples, 140 of which delivered stool samples. All these were HTX-negative for Schistosoma mansoni, and all 118 tested with KK were negative for both S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths. POCCCA results from freshly collected urine yielded a specificity of 62.
