  • We discuss the general framework developed for quantum plasmonic sensing in recent years, covering the basic theory behind the advancements made, and describe the important works that made these advancements. We also describe several key works in detail, highlighting their motivation, the working principles behind them, and their future impact. The intention of the review is to set a foundation for a burgeoning field of research that is currently being explored out of intellectual curiosity and for a wide range of practical applications in biochemistry, medicine, and pharmaceutical research.Many plant-based milks lack key micronutrients found in bovine milk, such as calcium and vitamin D. In this study, we fortified almond milk with these two micronutrients and used a standardized gastrointestinal model to examine the impact of product formulation on their bioaccessibility. The impact of different forms (CaCl2 versus CaCO3) and concentrations (0, 1, or 2 g per 240 mL) of calcium on the physicochemical properties, lipid digestibility, and vitamin D bioaccessibility was examined. Soluble calcium (CaCl2) promoted particle aggregation by reducing the electrostatic repulsion, while colloidal calcium (CaCO3) did not because there were fewer free calcium ions. High levels of calcium (soluble or insoluble) reduced vitamin D bioaccessibility, which was attributed to insoluble calcium soap formation in the small intestine. Calcium bioaccessibility was higher for CaCO3 than CaCl2. These findings are useful for the development of nutritionally fortified plant-based milks with improved physicochemical and nutritional properties.Antibiotic resistance is a critical public health problem. To drive the development of AMP-based treatments, it is necessary to create design approaches with higher precision and selectivity toward resistant targets. Previously, we developed AMPGAN and obtained proof-of-concept evidence for the generative approach to design AMPs with experimental validation. Building on the success of AMPGAN, we present AMPGAN v2, a bidirectional conditional generative adversarial network (BiCGAN)-based approach for rational AMP design. AMPGAN v2 uses generator-discriminator dynamics to learn data-driven priors and controls generation using conditioning variables. The bidirectional component, implemented using a learned encoder to map data samples into the latent space of the generator, aids iterative manipulation of candidate peptides. Among these anthocyanins, malvidin-3-O-glucoside (M3G) and malvidin-3-O-galactoside (M3Ga) could remarkably ameliorate FFA-induced lipid accumulation. Besides, M3G and M3Ga also inhibited oxidative stress via suppressing reactive oxygen species and superoxide anion overproduction, increasing glutathione levels, and enhancing activities of antioxidant enzymes. Further studies unveiled that the representative anthocyanin M3G-upregulated transcription factor EB (TFEB)-mediated lysosomal function possibly interacted with TFEB and activated the Nrf2/ARE (antioxidant responsive element) signaling pathway. Overall, this study enriched the knowledge about the health-promoting effects of blueberry anthocyanins against NAFLD and provided ideas for the development of functional foods of blueberry anthocyanins.Rhodococcus opacus is a nonmodel bacterium that is well suited for valorizing lignin. Despite recent advances in our systems-level understanding of its versatile metabolism, studies of its gene functions at a single gene level are still lagging. Elucidating gene functions in nonmodel organisms is challenging due to limited genetic engineering tools that are convenient to use. To address this issue, we developed a simple gene repression system based on CRISPR interference (CRISPRi). This gene repression system uses a T7 RNA polymerase system to express a small guide RNA, demonstrating improved repression compared to the previously demonstrated CRISPRi system (i.e., the maximum repression efficiency improved from 58% to 85%). Additionally, our cloning strategy allows for building multiple CRISPRi plasmids in parallel without any PCR step, facilitating the engineering of this GC-rich organism. Using the improved CRISPRi system, we confirmed the annotated roles of four metabolic pathway genes, which had been identified by our previous transcriptomic analysis to be related to the consumption of benzoate, vanillate, catechol, and acetate. Furthermore, we showed our tool's utility by demonstrating the inducible accumulation of muconate that is a precursor of adipic acid, an important monomer for nylon production. While the maximum muconate yield obtained using our tool was 30% of the yield obtained using gene knockout, our tool showed its inducibility and partial repressibility. Our CRISPRi tool will be useful to facilitate functional studies of this nonmodel organism and engineer this promising microbial chassis for lignin valorization.In this study, we integrate rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) with the Harmonic scalpel, an advanced laparoscopic surgical instrument that utilizes ultrasound energy to dissect and coagulate tissues. The REIMS platform coupled with the Harmonic device was shown to produce tissue-specific lipid profiles through the analysis of porcine tissues in both negative and positive ionization modes. Comparison with other methods of electrosurgical dissection, such as monopolar electrosurgery and CO2 laser, showed spectral differences in the profile dependent on the energy device used. The Harmonic device demonstrated major spectral differences in the phospholipid region of m/z 600-1000 compared with the monopolar electrosurgical and CO2 laser-generated spectra. Within the Harmonic REIMS spectra, high intensities of diglycerides and triglycerides were observed.

SWEEP framework is likely to tackle few practical issues related to WBE and simultaneously proposes refinements to the approach for better outcome and efficiency to save precious lives around the globe. It is observed that the present pandemic offers an opportunity for SWEEP to get included in routine urban water management to put the humankind at front to stop such pandemic in future or at least be prepared to fight against it. With global collaboration, SWEEP can be fine-tuned to meet diverse needs, making the present and future generations resilient to future viral outbreaks. Recent WBE studies conducted to check for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater revealed that raw sewage samples tested positive to PCR-based assays while the treated samples showed absence of viral titers. Moreover, the lockdown had a positive impact on decreasing the viral loading in sewage. The proposed SWEEP protocol has an advantage over testifying individuals for predicting the stage of pandemic.In this study, magnesium oxide biochar-chitosan composite (MgO-BCR-W) prepared through modification with MgCl2 and chitosan was investigated as an adsorbent for the removal of Cd from the aquatic and soil environment. Kinetic and thermodynamics revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption onto MgO-BCR-W was well fitted by pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacities of rice husk biochar (BCR) and MgO-BCR-W for Cd(II) reached 11.09 mg/g and 59.66 mg/g, respectively. Attractively, the computed values of RL ranged between 0 and 1, suggesting that the adsorption of Cd(II) onto MgO-BCR-W is favourable. Characterisations of the adsorbents revealed that the synergistic effect of surface complexation and precipitation mechanisms played a major role in the removal of Cd. In soil incubation experiment, the addition of MgO-BCR-W at the level of 2% was most effective in Cd stabilization compared to the control, which reduced the content of bioavailable Cd by 22.32%. SWEEP framework is likely to tackle few practical issues related to WBE and simultaneously proposes refinements to the approach for better outcome and efficiency to save precious lives around the globe. It is observed that the present pandemic offers an opportunity for SWEEP to get included in routine urban water management to put the humankind at front to stop such pandemic in future or at least be prepared to fight against it. With global collaboration, SWEEP can be fine-tuned to meet diverse needs, making the present and future generations resilient to future viral outbreaks. Recent WBE studies conducted to check for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater revealed that raw sewage samples tested positive to PCR-based assays while the treated samples showed absence of viral titers. The presence of T cell lymphocytic infiltrates in the mucosa have suggested that vedolizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody which binds to alpha4 beta7 integrin and inhibits the migration of effector T-lymphocytes into gastrointestinal tissues, would be an effective treatment. A previous report of 3 CVID cases suggested benefit in 2 subjects. In this study 7 CVID patients with severe enteropathy were treated with vedolizumab. Four of the 7 completed vedolizumab induction therapy but 3 subjects had acute decompensation during induction and treatment was stopped. While one subject showed improvement, 6 of the 7 patients were withdrawn from therapy. While vedolizumab may be of use in some CVID subjects, it was not ultimately found helpful in most of these patients. It also provides guidance for how to present synthesized information in evidence profiles and summary of findings tables. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING We present guidance for rating certainty in TA in clinical and public health and review the presentation of results of a body of evidence regarding tests. RESULTS Supplemented by practical examples, we describe how raters of the evidence can apply the GRADE domains inconsistency, imprecision, and publication bias to a body of evidence of TA studies. CONCLUSIONS Using GRADE in Cochrane and other reviews as well as World Health Organization and other guidelines helped refining the GRADE approach for rating the certainty of a body of evidence from TA studies. While several of the GRADE domains (e.g., imprecision and magnitude of the association) require further methodological research to help operationalize them, judgments need to be made on the basis of what is known so far.     Drowning death rates in the African region are estimated to be the highest in the world. Data collection and surveillance for drowning in African countries are limited. We aimed to establish the availability of drowning data in multiple existing administrative data sources in Uganda and to describe the characteristics of drowning based on available data.

    We conducted a retrospective descriptive study in 60 districts in Uganda using existing administrative records on drowning cases from January 2016 to June 2018 in district police offices, marine police detachments, fire/rescue brigade detachments, and the largest mortuary in those districts. Data were systematically deduplicated to determine and quantify unique drowning cases.

    A total of 1435 fatal and non-fatal drowning cases were recorded; 1009 (70%) in lakeside districts and 426 (30%) in non-lakeside districts. Of 1292 fatal cases, 1041 (81%) were identified in only one source. After deduplication, 1283 (89% of recorded cases; 1160 fatal, 123 non-fatal) unique drowning cases remained. Data completeness varied by source and variable. When demographic characteristics were known, fatal victims were predominantly male (n=876, 85%), and the average age was 24 years. In lakeside districts, 81% of fatal cases with a known activity at the time of drowning involved boating.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, this procedure has undergone several technologic refinements, including the introduction of SPECT/CT, as well as radioguidance and fluorescence guidance. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of this technologic evolution on SNB in the head and neck region. The primary endpoint was the false-negative (FN) rate. Secondary endpoints were number of harvested SNs, overall operation time, operation time per harvested SN, and postoperative complications. Methods A retrospective database was queried for cutaneous head and neck melanoma patients who underwent SNB at The Netherlands Cancer Institute between 1993 and 2016. The implementation of new detection techniques was divided into 4 groups 1993-2005, with preoperative lymphoscintigraphy and intraoperative use of both a γ-ray detection probe and patent blue (n = 30); 2006-2007, with addition of preope SNs without an increase in overall operation time, possibly indicating an improved surgical efficiency. Operation time per harvested SN decreased; the average FN rate remained 11.9% and was unchanged over 23 y. Methods This study included 57 GEP-NET patients who had a primary tumor that was unresectable (because of vascular involvement as defined using the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma criteria of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network) and who underwent 177Lu-DOTATATE therapy without any prior surgery. They were categorized into 2 groups 23 patients without liver metastases (group 1) and 34 patients with potentially resectable liver metastases (group 2). 177Lu-DOTATATE was administered with mixed amino acid-based renal protection at a dose of 7.4 GBq (200 mCi) per cycle. Surgical resectability was evaluated using triphasic contrast-enhanced abdominal CT imaging at 3 different time points during the PRRT course. Four broad categories of overall PRl lymph node involvement, patients for whom the primary tumor was smaller than 5 cm, patients for whom liver metastases were no larger than 1.5 cm, patients for whom there were no more than 3 liver metastases, and patients for whom 18F-FDG uptake in the primary tumor had an SUVmax of less than 5. Conclusion In a moderate fraction of GEP-NET patients, with or without liver metastases, whose primary tumor was unresectable because of vascular involvement, the primary tumor converted from unresectable to resectable after 177Lu-DOTATATE therapy, signifying that neoadjuvant PRRT can be considered in such patients. Drowning death rates in the African region are estimated to be the highest in the world. Data collection and surveillance for drowning in African countries are limited. We aimed to establish the availability of drowning data in multiple existing administrative data sources in Uganda and to describe the characteristics of drowning based on available data. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study in 60 districts in Uganda using existing administrative records on drowning cases from January 2016 to June 2018 in district police offices, marine police detachments, fire/rescue brigade detachments, and the largest mortuary in those districts. Data were systematically deduplicated to determine and quantify unique drowning cases. A total of 1435 fatal and non-fatal drowning cases were recorded; 1009 (70%) in lakeside districts and 426 (30%) in non-lakeside districts. Of 1292 fatal cases, 1041 (81%) were identified in only one source. After deduplication, 1283 (89% of recorded cases; 1160 fatal, 123 non-fatal) unique drowning cases remained. Data completeness varied by source and variable. When demographic characteristics were known, fatal victims were predominantly male (n=876, 85%), and the average age was 24 years. Since its introduction in the early 1990s, this procedure has undergone several technologic refinements, including the introduction of SPECT/CT, as well as radioguidance and fluorescence guidance. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of this technologic evolution on SNB in the head and neck region. The primary endpoint was the false-negative (FN) rate. Secondary endpoints were number of harvested SNs, overall operation time, operation time per harvested SN, and postoperative complications. Methods A retrospective database was queried for cutaneous head and neck melanoma patients who underwent SNB at The Netherlands Cancer Institute between 1993 and 2016.   • Oxidative stress and dysregulated adipocytokine secretion accompanying hypertrophied adipose tissue induce chronic inflammation, which leads to vascular endothelial dysfunction. The present study investigated the ability of anthocyanin (ACN) and non-anthocyanin polyphenol (PP) fractions from lingonberry fruit to mitigate adipose tissue hypertrophy and endothelial dysfunction using 3T3-L1 adipocytes and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). This study showed that the PP fraction decreased intracellular ROS generation in hypertrophied adipocytes by enhancing antioxidant enzyme expression (SOD2) and inhibiting oxidant enzyme expression (NOX4, iNOS). Moreover, PP and ACN fractions reduced triglyceride content in adipocytes accompanied by downregulation of the expression of lipogenic genes such as aP2, FAS, and DAGT1. Treatment with both fractions modulated the mRNA expression and protein secretion of key adipokines in hypertrophied adipocytes. Expression and secretion of leptin and adiponectin were, respectively, down- and upregulated. Furthermore, PP and ACN fractions alleviated the inflammatory response in TNF-α-induced HUVECs by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory genes (IL-6, IL-1β) and adhesion molecules (VCAM-1, ICAM-1, SELE). Among 39,239 Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition cohort participants who provided a blood sample between 1998-2001, 517 newly diagnosed colorectal cancers were identified through 30 June 2015. In this nested case-control study, controls were matched 11 to cases on age, sex, race and date of blood draw. Mass spectroscopy-based metabolomic analyses of pre-diagnostic plasma identified 886 named metabolites, after quality control exclusions. Conditional logistic regression models estimated multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in each metabolite with risk of colorectal cancer. Six metabolites were associated with colorectal cancer risk at a false discovery rate less then 0.20. These metabolites were of several classes, including cofactors and vitamins, nucleotides, xenobiotics, lipids and amino acids. Five metabolites (guanidinoacetate, 2'-O-methylcytidine, vanillylmandelate, bilirubin (E,E) and N-palmitoylglycine) were positively associated (OR per 1 SD = 1.29 to 1.32), and one (3-methylxanthine) was inversely associated with CRC risk (OR = 0.79, 95% CI, 0.69-0.89). We did not replicate findings from two earlier prospective studies of 250 cases each after adjusting for multiple comparisons. Accordingly, this review examines the available literature for different nutritional screening approaches implemented among COVID-19 patients, with a special focus on elderly adults. After a literature search, we selected and scrutinized 14 studies assessing malnutrition among COVID-19 patients. The Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) has demonstrated superior sensitivity to other traditional screening measures. The controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, which comprises serum albort while detecting and treating malnutrition in the general public might be necessary to increase resilience against COVID-19.

    As the population at risk for pelvic nodal involvement remains poorly described, the role of pelvic lymphadenectomy (LAE) in vulvar squamous cell cancer (VSCC) has been a matter of discussion for decades.

    In the AGO-CaRE-1 study, 1618 patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB or higher primary VSCC treated at 29 centers in Germany between 1998 and 2008 were documented. In this analysis, only patients with pelvic LAE (n=70) were analyzed with regard to prognosis and correlation between inguinal and pelvic lymph node involvement.

    The majority of patients had T1b/T2 tumors (n=47; 67.1%), with a median diameter of 40mm (2-240mm); 54/70 patients (77.1%) who received pelvic LAE had positive groin nodes. For 42 of these 54 patients, the number of affected groin nodes had been documented as a median of 3; 14/42 (33.3%) of these patients had histologically confirmed pelvic nodal metastases (median number of affected pelvic nodes 3 [1-12]). In these 14 patients, the median number of affected groin nodes was 7 (1-30), with a groin metastases median maximum diameter of 42.5mm (12-50). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed an area under the curve of 0.85, with 83.3% sensitivity and 92.6% specificity for the prediction of pelvic involvement in cases of six or more positive groin nodes. No cases of pelvic nodal involvement without groin metastases were observed. Prognosis in cases of pelvic metastasis was poor, with a median progression-free survival of only 12.5 months.

The aim of our study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the feasibility and diagnostic value of SLNB technique in patients with cT1N0M0 gastric cancer. Eligible studies were systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to April 2020. A random-effect model was used to pool the data, and subgroup analysis was used to explain the heterogeneities. A total of 22 clinical studies (1993 patients with cT1N0M0 gastric cancer) were included. The pooled SLN identification rate, sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals were 0.99 (0.99-1.00), 0.92 (0.88-0.95), 1.00 (1.00-1.00), and 832.8 (395.5-1753.6), respectively. The summary receiver operator characteristic displayed a test accuracy of 99.3%. Subgroup analysis found an improved SLN sensitivity for studies with the mean number of SLNs > 4 and studies stained with a combination of hematoxylin-eosin with immunohistochemistry (HE + IHC). Further, studies using the basin dissection were associated with a higher SLN identification rate. While cancer remains the second among the diseases associated with mortality worldwide, cancer patients' mortality rates are often observed upon extended periods after illness, usually ranging from months to years. A combined approach of genome mining and untargeted metabolomics analysis was applied. The carotenoid erythroxanthin sulfate was detected in E. citreus LAMA 915 cell extract. A proposal for carotenoid biosynthesis by this bacterium is provided, involving the genes crtBIYZWG. These are responsible for the biosynthesis of carotenoids from the zeaxanthin pathway and their 2,2'-hydroxylated derivatives. E. citreus LAMA 915 extracts showed antioxidant and sun protection effects.

In the AGO-CaRE-1 study, 1618 patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB or higher primary VSCC treated at 29 centers in Germany between 1998 and 2008 were documented. In this analysis, only patients with pelvic LAE (n=70) were analyzed with regard to prognosis and correlation between inguinal and pelvic lymph node involvement. The majority of patients had T1b/T2 tumors (n=47; 67.1%), with a median diameter of 40mm (2-240mm); 54/70 patients (77.1%) who received pelvic LAE had positive groin nodes. For 42 of these 54 patients, the number of affected groin nodes had been documented as a median of 3; 14/42 (33.3%) of these patients had histologically confirmed pelvic nodal metastases (median number of affected pelvic nodes 3 [1-12]). In these 14 patients, the median number of affected groin nodes was 7 (1-30), with a groin metastases median maximum diameter of 42.5mm (12-50). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed an area under the curve of 0.85, with 83.3% sensitivity and 92.6% specificity for the prediction of pelvic involvement in cases of six or more positive groin nodes. No cases of pelvic nodal involvement without groin metastases were observed. Prognosis in cases of pelvic metastasis was poor, with a median progression-free survival of only 12.5 months. The aim of our study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the feasibility and diagnostic value of SLNB technique in patients with cT1N0M0 gastric cancer. Eligible studies were systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to April 2020. A random-effect model was used to pool the data, and subgroup analysis was used to explain the heterogeneities. A total of 22 clinical studies (1993 patients with cT1N0M0 gastric cancer) were included. The pooled SLN identification rate, sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals were 0.99 (0.99-1.00), 0.92 (0.88-0.95), 1.00 (1.00-1.00), and 832.8 (395.5-1753.6), respectively. The summary receiver operator characteristic displayed a test accuracy of 99.3%. Subgroup analysis found an improved SLN sensitivity for studies with the mean number of SLNs > 4 and studies stained with a combination of hematoxylin-eosin with immunohistochemistry (HE + IHC). Further, studies using the basin dissection were associated with a higher SLN identification rate. The current meta-analysis provides data that favors the use of SLNB for predicting the status of lymph node metastasis in patients with cT1N0M0 gastric cancer. While cancer remains the second among the diseases associated with mortality worldwide, cancer patients' mortality rates are often observed upon extended periods after illness, usually ranging from months to years. However, the mortality rates associated with COVID-19 disease are robust. The cytokine storm induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection appeared to be responsible for the multi-organ failure and increased mortality rates. Since both cancer and COVID-19 disease share overlapping inflammatory mechanisms, repurposing some anticancer and anti-inflammatory drugs for COVID-19 may lower mortality rates. A combined approach of genome mining and untargeted metabolomics analysis was applied. The carotenoid erythroxanthin sulfate was detected in E. citreus LAMA 915 cell extract. A proposal for carotenoid biosynthesis by this bacterium is provided, involving the genes crtBIYZWG. These are responsible for the biosynthesis of carotenoids from the zeaxanthin pathway and their 2,2'-hydroxylated derivatives. E. citreus LAMA 915 extracts showed antioxidant and sun protection effects.

  • Anomalous diffusion dynamics in confined nanoenvironments govern the macroscale properties and interactions of many biophysical and material systems. Currently, it is difficult to quantitatively link the nanoscale structure of porous media to anomalous diffusion within them. After expanding the diffracted optical beam from a TE-mode grating through the bulk silicon substrate, the beam is collimated with the aid of microlenses resulting in an increased coupling tolerance to lateral and longitudinal misalignment. With an expanded beam diameter of 32 μm, a ±7 μm lateral and a ±0.6° angular fiber-to-microlens 1-dB alignment tolerance is demonstrated at the wavelength of 1310 nm. Also, a large 300 μm longitudinal alignment tolerance with a 0.2 dB drop in coupling efficiency is obtained when the collimated beam from the microlens is coupled into a thermally expanded core single-mode fiber.Large effect pigments, widely used in various fields of industrial applications, produce characteristic visual textures known as sparkle and graininess, which need to be quantified by objective or subjective methods. The development of preliminary measurement scales for sparkle and graininess, whose recommendation is now under discussion in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), is described in this article. These scales are absolute, linear and traceable to standards of optical radiation metrology. The main purpose of this article is to justify the convenience of adopting these preliminary measurements scales, showing clear evidence that they correlate well with subjective evaluations. We show the feasibility of our approach by validating simulations of complex 3D compositions of the measured materials against physical prints, using photo-polymer resins. As presented in this paper, our technique yields colorspace data suitable for accurate appearance reproduction in the area of 3D printing. However, most types of present absorbers can only absorb space propagation waves, yet absorption for the surface wave (SW) has not been researched intensively. In reality, when the space wave illuminates on the metal under large oblique angles, surface waves can be excited on the interface between metal and dielectric and thus would increase the RCS and influence the stealth performance. Here, based on the wave vector and impedance matching theories, we propose a broadband absorber for the surface wave under spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) mode. The former theory ensures that surface waves can enter the absorber efficiently, and the latter guarantees perfect absorption. The experimental results indicate that our absorber can achieve a broadband (9.4-18 GHz) performance with an absorption ratio better than 90%, which is in great agreement with the simulations. Therefore, our device can be applied in RCS reduction for the metal devices, antenna array decoupling and many other applications. However, most works are implemented with functions controlled by polarization or frequency and seldom involve the incidence angle. Herein, we propose a multifunctional full-space metasurface controlled by frequency, polarization and incidence angle. A meta-atom is firstly designed. When EM waves illumine normally in the C-band, it possesses the characteristic of asymmetric transmission with high-efficient polarization conversion. In the Ku-band, both x- and y-polarized EM waves along both sides will be reflected and achieve broadband and high-efficient cross-polarization conversion. Also, when illumined obliquely, both sides can achieve efficient retroreflection at a certain frequency. As a proof of concept, a metasurface consisting of the above meta-atoms is configured as a dual orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beam generator and different beam deflector when illumined normally.

Also, a large 300 μm longitudinal alignment tolerance with a 0.2 dB drop in coupling efficiency is obtained when the collimated beam from the microlens is coupled into a thermally expanded core single-mode fiber.Large effect pigments, widely used in various fields of industrial applications, produce characteristic visual textures known as sparkle and graininess, which need to be quantified by objective or subjective methods. The development of preliminary measurement scales for sparkle and graininess, whose recommendation is now under discussion in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), is described in this article. These scales are absolute, linear and traceable to standards of optical radiation metrology. The main purpose of this article is to justify the convenience of adopting these preliminary measurements scales, showing clear evidence that they correlate well with subjective evaluations. Before standardization, these scales need to be validated with more experimental data, including different specimens and experimental systems from other research groups.Volumetric light transport is a pervasive physical phenomenon, and therefore its accurate simulation is important for a broad array of disciplines. While suitable mathematical models for computing the transport are now available, obtaining the necessary material parameters needed to drive such simulations is a challenging task direct measurements of these parameters from material samples are seldom possible. Building on the inverse scattering paradigm, we present a novel measurement approach which indirectly infers the transport parameters from extrinsic observations of multiple-scattered radiance. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in replacing structured illumination with a structured reflector bonded to the sample, and a robust fitting procedure that largely compensates for potential systematic errors in the calibration of the setup. We show the feasibility of our approach by validating simulations of complex 3D compositions of the measured materials against physical prints, using photo-polymer resins. As presented in this paper, our technique yields colorspace data suitable for accurate appearance reproduction in the area of 3D printing. Beyond that, and without fundamental changes to the basic measurement methodology, it could equally well be used to obtain spectral measurements that are useful for other application areas.Perfect absorbers are highly desired in many engineering and military applications, including radar cross section (RCS) reduction, cloaking devices, and sensor detectors. However, most types of present absorbers can only absorb space propagation waves, yet absorption for the surface wave (SW) has not been researched intensively. In reality, when the space wave illuminates on the metal under large oblique angles, surface waves can be excited on the interface between metal and dielectric and thus would increase the RCS and influence the stealth performance. Here, based on the wave vector and impedance matching theories, we propose a broadband absorber for the surface wave under spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) mode. The former theory ensures that surface waves can enter the absorber efficiently, and the latter guarantees perfect absorption. The experimental results indicate that our absorber can achieve a broadband (9.4-18 GHz) performance with an absorption ratio better than 90%, which is in great agreement with the simulations. Therefore, our device can be applied in RCS reduction for the metal devices, antenna array decoupling and many other applications. Also, this work provides a unique methodology to design new types of broadband surface wave absorbers.Multifunctional metasurfaces have exhibited considerable abilities of manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves, especially in full-space manipulation. However, most works are implemented with functions controlled by polarization or frequency and seldom involve the incidence angle. Herein, we propose a multifunctional full-space metasurface controlled by frequency, polarization and incidence angle. A meta-atom is firstly designed. When EM waves illumine normally in the C-band, it possesses the characteristic of asymmetric transmission with high-efficient polarization conversion. In the Ku-band, both x- and y-polarized EM waves along both sides will be reflected and achieve broadband and high-efficient cross-polarization conversion. Also, when illumined obliquely, both sides can achieve efficient retroreflection at a certain frequency. As a proof of concept, a metasurface consisting of the above meta-atoms is configured as a dual orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beam generator and different beam deflector when illumined normally.
