Squirrel monkeys reliably reproduced the responses observed in human cases of yellow fever and, therefore, constitute an excellent experimental model for studies on the pathophysiology of the disease.

Acinetobacter baumannii outbreaks have been associated with pandemic International Clones (ICs), but the virulence factors involved with their pathogenicity are sparsely understood. Pigment production has been linked with bacterial pathogenicity, however, this phenotype is rarely observed in A. baumannii.

This study aimed to characterise the reddish-brown pigment produced by A. baumannii strains, and to determine its biosynthetic pathway by genomic approaches.

Pigment characterisation and antimicrobial susceptibility were conducted by phenotypic tests. The clonal relationship was obtained by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). The genome of an A. baumannii was obtained for characterisation of genes involved with pigment production.

The pyomelanin was the pigment produced by A. baumannii. Strains were extensively drug resistant and belonged to the IC-5/ST79. The pyomelanin biosynthetic pathway was determined and presented a particular architecture concerning the peripheral (tyrB, phhB and hpd) and central (hmgB, hmgC and hmgR) metabolic pathway genes. The identification of a distant HmgA homologue, probably without dioxygenase activity, could explain pyomelanin production. Virulence determinants involved with adherence (csuA/BABCDE and a T5bSS-carrying genomic island), and iron uptake (basABCDEFGHIJ, bauABCDEF and barAB) were characterised.

There is a biosynthetic pathway compatible with the pyomelanin production observed in persistent A. baumannii IC-5 strains.

Bacillus anthracis is the aetiologic agent of anthrax, a re-emerging, septicaemic, haemorrhagic and lethal disease that affects humans, domestic ruminants and wildlife. Plasmids pXO1 and pXO2 are attributes that confer pathogenicity to B. anthracis strains. This bacterium was used as biological weapon in the World Wars and in the biological attack in the United States of America at 2001. B. anthracis is classified as a Tier 1 bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention. Anthrax is recognised as a re-emerging disease. Several studies concerning the dynamics of B. anthracis cycle in soil revealed that nonpathogenic B. anthracis strains due to lack of pXO2 plasmid are commonly found in some types of soil.

This study aimed isolation and identification of B. anthracis spores in soil samples of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Phenotypic and genotypic approaches were used to identify isolates including MALDI-TOF/MS, motility test, susceptibility to gamma phage and penicillin, survey for pag and cap genes as surrogates of pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids, respectively, and sequencing of 16SrRNA-encoding gene. Physicochemical analysis of the soil samples were carried out to describe soil characteristics.

We observed the presence of one B. https://www.selleckchem.com/Proteasome.html anthracis pXO1+ and pXO2- isolated from clay loam soil; one B. anthracis-like strain pXO1+ and pXO2-isolated from loamy sand; and 10 Bacillus spp. strains sensitive to phage-gamma that need better characterisation to define which their species were recovered from loamy sand.

This work showed promising results and it was the first study to report results from an active surveillance for B. anthracis in Brazil.

To compare primary health care (PHC) actions taken to care for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the state of Goiás, Brazil, between 2012 and 2014.

This was a descriptive study using secondary data from the National Program for Improving Primary Care Access and Quality (PMAQ-AB). The proportions of teams performing actions to address NCDs were compared between PMAQ-AB cycles I and II using the McNemar test for paired samples.

Seventeen of the 20 variables studied showed a proportional increase between the two cycles from 16.0% to 32.1% of teams that practiced all care management actions, from 21.5% to 35.2% of those that practiced all health promotion actions and from 22.2% to 39.8% of teams that practiced all activities at school.

PHC actions to address NCDs in Goiás were strengthened between the two PMAQ-AB cycles.

Among the multitude of cell-penetrating peptides, PepFect14 has been preferentially used in our laboratory for oligonucleotide delivery into cells and in vivo mouse models. However, this activity has mainly been reported towards cytoplasm and nuclei, while the mentioned disorders have been linked to mitochondrial defects. Here, we report a library generated from a combinatorial covalent fusion of a mitochondrial-penetrating peptide, mtCPP1, and PepFect14 in order to deliver therapeutic biomolecules to influence mitochondrial protein expression. The non-covalent complexation of these peptides with oligonucleotides resulted in nano-complexes affecting biological functions in the cytoplasm and on mitochondria. This delivery system proved to efficiently target mitochondrial genes, providing a framework for the development of mitochondrial peptide-based oligonucleotide technologies with the potential to be used as a treatment for patients with mitochondrial disorders.Topological insulator nanoparticles (TINPs) host topologically protected Dirac surface states, just like their bulk counterparts. For TINPs of radius less then 100 nm, quantum confinement on the surface results in the discretization of the Dirac cone. This system of discrete energy levels is referred to as a topological quantum dot (TQD) with energy level spacing on the order of Terahertz (THz), which is tunable with material-type and particle size. The presence of these discretized energy levels in turn leads to a new electron-mediated phonon-light coupling in the THz range, and the resulting mode can be observed in the absorption cross-section of the TINPs. We present the first experimental evidence of this new quantum phenomenon in Bi2Te3 topological quantum dots, remarkably observed at room temperature.
