  • Giardia duodenalis is a major gastrointestinal parasite of humans and animals across the globe. It is also of interest from an evolutionary perspective as it possesses many features that are unique among the eukaryotes, including its distinctive binucleate cell structure. While genomic analysis of a small number of isolates has provided valuable insights, efforts to understand the epidemiology of the disease and the population biology of the parasite have been limited by the molecular tools currently available. We review these tools and assess the impact of affordable and rapid genome sequencing systems increasingly being deployed in diagnostic settings. While these technologies have direct implications for public and veterinary health, they will also improve our understanding of the unique biology of this fascinating parasite.
    To evaluate the efficacy of daily consumption of fortified yogurt with beta-Hydroxy beta-Methyl Butyrate (HMB) and vitamins D and C on measures of sarcopenia, inflammation, and quality of life in sarcopenic older adults.

    In this 12-week randomized double-blind controlled trial, participants received either yogurt fortified with 3g HMB, 1000 IU vitamin D, and 500mg vitamin C in the intervention group (n=33) or plain yogurt in the control group (n=33).

    A total of 66 older adults with sarcopenia recruited from the community in Shiraz, Iran.

    Body composition, muscle strength, and functionality were measured using Dual-energy-X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), hydraulic handgrip dynamometer, and usual gait speed, respectively. Serum concentrations of vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde, and insulin were measured at baseline and after 12weeks. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was also evaluated using SF-12 questionnaire.

    We determined the perpetrated and witnessed experiences of mistreatment and Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) among maternal health providers in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted among 156 maternal health providers in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria. Information was collected using semi-structured, self-administered questionnaires, and 3 focus group discussions. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses were performed using SPSS version 20 and thematic analysis respectively.

    Most respondents were males (64.1%) and doctors (74.4%) with mean age of 31.97±6.82. Two-fifths (39.1%) and 73.1% of the respondents had ever meted out or witnessed disrespectful and abusive care to women during childbirth respectively. Verbal abuse and denial of companionship in labour were major mistreatments reported qualitatively and quantitatively. About a third of the respondents mistreated wooviders. We recommend intensification of provider capacity building on RMC with special focus on older practitioners and the provision of supportive work environments that encourage respectful maternal care practices.
    There occurs huge heterogeneity in clinical outcomes for patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs). The purpose of this study was to indicate genetic biomarkers predicting primary resistance of EGFR-TKIs in these patients.

    Using a next-generation sequencing panel with 168 cancer-related genes, matched tumor biopsy and plasma samples before treatments from patients with NSCLC were analyzed. Patients taking EGFR-TKIs were followed-up with imaging examination. Correlation of co-alterative genes with progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed.

    Of the 48 patients treated with EGFR-TKIs, 46 (95.83%) had at least 1 genetic co-variant beyond EGFR mutation. Multivariate analysis indicated that RB1, PIK3CA, and ERBB2 co-alterations, rather than number of co-alterative genes, were independently associated with poorer PFS. Grouping patients by specific gene status showed best likelihood ratio χ
    , Akaike information criterion, and Harrell concordance index. The median PFS for patients in group A (less genetic co-variations and wild specific genes), group B (more genetic co-variations and wild specific genes), group C (less genetic co-variations and altered specific genes), and group D (more genetic co-variations and altered specific genes) were 10.4, 9.13 (vs. group A; P= .3112), 6.33 (vs. group B; P= .0465), and 3.90 (vs. group C; P= .0309) months, respectively.

The European Commission has approved the use of bevacizumab plus erlotinib as first-line treatment of EGFR-mutated NSCLC; however, it has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Recently, several phase III, randomized controlled trials of combinations of antiangiogenic agents and EGFR-TKIs have been reported. These studies have not yet been included in any previous meta-analysis.

Motor tract injury accounts for the majority of this disability; therefore, there is impetus to understand mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of injury and subsequent reorganization of the motor tract that may lead to recovery. After acute central nervous system injury, there are changes in the microenvironment and structure of the motor tract. Several suitable stem cell sources for transplantation including human embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells and adult stem cells have been identified as promising target populations. However, the retina is an elegant neuronal complex composed of various types of cells with different functions. The replacement of these different types of cells by transplantation should be addressed separately. So far, retinal pigment epithelium transplantation has achieved the most advanced stage of clinical trials, while transplantation of retinal neurons such as retinal ganglion cells and photoreceptors has been mostly studied in pre-clinical animal models. In this review, we opine on the key problems that need to be addressed before stem cells transplantation, especially for replacing injured retinal ganglion cells, may be used practically for treatment. A key problem we have called the Switchboard Dilemma is a major block to have functional retinal ganglion cell replacement. We use the public switchboard telephone network as an example to illustrate different difficulties for replacing damaged components in the retina that allow for visual signaling. Retinal ganglion cell transplantation is confronted by significant hurdles, because retinal ganglion cells receive signals from different interneurons, integrate and send signals to the correct targets of the visual system, which functions similar to the switchboard in a telephone network - therefore the Switchboard Dilemma.Osteopontin is a broadly expressed pleiotropic protein, and is attracting increased attention because of its role in the pathophysiology of several inflammatory, degenerative, autoimmune, and oncologic diseases. In fact, in the last decade, several studies have shown that osteopontin contributes to tissue damage not only by recruiting harmful inflammatory cells to the site of lesion, but also increasing their survival. The detrimental role of osteopontin has been indeed well documented in the context of different neurological conditions (i.e., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's diseases). Such functional domains may in turn activate intracellular signaling pathways and mediate cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions.

    Acinetobacter baumannii outbreaks have been associated with pandemic International Clones (ICs), but the virulence factors involved with their pathogenicity are sparsely understood. Pigment production has been linked with bacterial pathogenicity, however, this phenotype is rarely observed in A. baumannii.

    This study aimed to characterise the reddish-brown pigment produced by A. baumannii strains, and to determine its biosynthetic pathway by genomic approaches.

    Pigment characterisation and antimicrobial susceptibility were conducted by phenotypic tests. The clonal relationship was obtained by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). The genome of an A. baumannii was obtained for characterisation of genes involved with pigment production.

    The pyomelanin was the pigment produced by A. baumannii. Strains were extensively drug resistant and belonged to the IC-5/ST79. The pyomelanin biosynthetic pathway was determined and presented a particular architecture concerning the peripheral (tyrB, phhB and hpd) and central (hmgB, hmgC and hmgR) metabolic pathway genes. The identification of a distant HmgA homologue, probably without dioxygenase activity, could explain pyomelanin production. Virulence determinants involved with adherence (csuA/BABCDE and a T5bSS-carrying genomic island), and iron uptake (basABCDEFGHIJ, bauABCDEF and barAB) were characterised.

    Bacillus anthracis is the aetiologic agent of anthrax, a re-emerging, septicaemic, haemorrhagic and lethal disease that affects humans, domestic ruminants and wildlife. Plasmids pXO1 and pXO2 are attributes that confer pathogenicity to B. anthracis strains. This bacterium was used as biological weapon in the World Wars and in the biological attack in the United States of America at 2001. B. anthracis is classified as a Tier 1 bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention. Anthrax is recognised as a re-emerging disease. Several studies concerning the dynamics of B. anthracis cycle in soil revealed that nonpathogenic B. anthracis strains due to lack of pXO2 plasmid are commonly found in some types of soil.

This study aimed to characterise the reddish-brown pigment produced by A. baumannii strains, and to determine its biosynthetic pathway by genomic approaches. Pigment characterisation and antimicrobial susceptibility were conducted by phenotypic tests. The clonal relationship was obtained by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST).     This study aimed to determine the relationship between rs17576 (MMP-9) polymorphism and increased cancer risk in a Brazilian breast cancer cohort.

    This study included 141 women (71 breast cancer patients and 70 controls without breast cancer) who donated 3 mL of their peripheral blood for genomic DNA extraction. This DNA was then genotyped using a real-time polymerase chain reaction.

    The AG (rs17576) genotype was identified in 26 (18.43%) participants in the case group and in 22 (15.60%) participants in the control group (p=0.274), while the GG genotype was identified in ten (7.09%) participants in the case group and in one (0.70%) participant in the control group (p<0.003 - OR (95% CI) 13.13 (1.73, 593.08). No significant difference in the incidence rates was observed for AG or GG rs17576 genotypes in premenopausal women, p=0.813 and p=0.556, respectively. However, in postmenopausal women, the AG genotype was shown to occur in 14 (22.5%) participants in the case group and in 4 (6.45%) participants in the control (p<0.043), while GG genotype occurred in eight (12.90%) of the individuals in the case group and in none of the individuals in the control group (p<0.006).

    Imaging diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy has conventionally used ultrasonography. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a recent ultrasound technological advancement that has shown promise in the important medical problem of differentiating between benign and malignant cervical lymph nodes based on quantitative measurements of elasticity modulus. However, widely varying elasticity modulus metrics and regions-of-interest (ROIs) were used in existing studies, leading to inconsistent findings and results that are hard to compare with each other.

    Using a large dataset of 264 cervical lymph nodes from 200 patients, we designed a study comparing three elasticity modulus metrics (Emax, Emean, and standard deviation-SD) with three different ROIs to evaluate the effect of such selections. The metric values were compared between the benign and malignant node groups. The different ROI and metric selections were also compared through receiver operating characteristics curve analysis.

    For all ROIs, all metric values were significantly different between the two groups, indicting their diagnostic potential. This was confirmed by the ≥0.80 area under the curve (AUC) values achieved with these metrics. Different ROIs had no effect on Emax, whereas all ROIs achieved high performance at 0.88 AUC. For Emean, the smallest ROI focusing on the area of the highest elasticity achieved the best diagnostic performance. In contrast, the larger ROIs achieved higher performances for SD.

    This study illustrated the effect of elasticity modulus and ROI selection on the diagnostic performance of SWE on cervical lymphadenopathy. These new findings help guide relevant future studies and clinical applications of this important quantitative imaging modality.

    Evaluate the cognitive function and its relationship with balance, history of falls, and fear of falling in the elderly.

    We evaluated 250 elderly persons aged at least 60 years, who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire about the occurrence of falls in the last year. The cognitive function, balance, and fear of falling were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Falls Efficacy Scale (FES-I) scores, respectively. Participants were allocated into two groups based on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, the Group with Possible Cognitive Decline (GPCD) and the group with no cognitive decline (GNCD). We performed Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation for independent samples.

  • In an animal model, PPa extract suppressed HCC tumor growth and prolonged lifespan by reducing the VEGF/VEGFR axis and inducing tumor cell apoptosis in vivo. Ultimately, PPa extract demonstrated nearly no or low system-wide, physiological, or pathological toxicity in vivo. In conclusion, PPa extract effectively inhibited HCC cell growth through inducing cell cycle arrest and activating apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. The instruments used were the Questionnaire for Autonomy Support in Physical Education (CAA-EF), Sport Satisfaction Intrinsic in Physical Education (SSI-EF) and the physical education performance of the students. The instrument's validity tests were analyzed using confirmatory procedures. Descriptive, reliability, and validity analyses were carried out for each instrument, and the mediating effect was examined; a mediation analysis was performed using the PROCESS V.3.5 macro. The main results revealed that autonomy support is not a direct indicator of physical education performance, but rather that students must feel satisfied with physical education for there to exist a forecast for a positive physical education performance. Satisfaction with physical education was found to have a mediating effect between autonomy support and physical education performance. In the current study, key parameters, including aptamer concentration, pH, and incubation time were optimized, respectively, to ensure sensing performance. The sample consisted of 374 girls (Mage = 13.99; SD = 0.30) and 374 boys (Mage = 14.02; SD = 0.33) from the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. The instruments used were the Questionnaire for Autonomy Support in Physical Education (CAA-EF), Sport Satisfaction Intrinsic in Physical Education (SSI-EF) and the physical education performance of the students. The instrument's validity tests were analyzed using confirmatory procedures. Descriptive, reliability, and validity analyses were carried out for each instrument, and the mediating effect was examined; a mediation analysis was performed using the PROCESS V.3.5 macro. The main results revealed that autonomy support is not a direct indicator of physical education performance, but rather that students must feel satisfied with physical education for there to exist a forecast for a positive physical education performance. Satisfaction with physical education was found to have a mediating effect between autonomy support and physical education performance. However, boredom did not have a mediating effect between autonomy support and the student's performance in physical education class.The current work demonstrates an electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive determination of Cd2+ based on the Ti-modified Co3O4 nanoparticles. In this unlabeled system, Ti-modified Co3O4 nanoparticles act as current signal amplifiers modified on the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) surface, while the derivative aptamer of Cd2+ works as a target recognizer. In addition, the sensing is based on the increase in electrochemical probe thionine current signal due to the binding of aptamer to Cd2+ via specific recognition. In the current study, key parameters, including aptamer concentration, pH, and incubation time were optimized, respectively, to ensure sensing performance. Cyclic voltammetry was used not only to characterize each preparation and optimization step, but also to profile the bindings of aptamer to Cd2+. Under optimal conditions, Cd2+ can be determined in a linear range of 0.20 to 15 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.49 ng/mL, significantly below the maximum concentration limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.   • Many researchers use life cycle assessment methodology to investigate the energy and environmental impacts of energy-saving and new energy vehicles. However, in the context of China, the life cycle energy-saving and emission-reduction effects of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and the optimal applicable vehicle size and driving conditions for EREVs have been rarely studied. In this study, based on the life cycle assessment theory, the resource consumption, energy exhaustion, and environmental impact of EREVs were comprehensively analyzed. In addition, a differential evaluation model of ecological benefits was established for comparing EREVs with other vehicles with different power sources. Finally, scenario analysis was performed in terms of different vehicle sizes and driving conditions. The results have shown that EREV has great advantages in reducing mineral resource consumption and fossil energy consumption. The consumption of mineral resources of EREV is 14.68% lower than that of HEV, and the consumption of fossil energy is 34.72% lower than that of ICEV. In terms of environmental impact, EREV lies in the middle position. The scenario analysis has revealed that, for EREV in China, the optimal vehicle size is the passenger car and the optimal driving condition is the suburban condition. Interestingly, the hydrophobic binding site is also used by actin-binding proteins, such as cofilin and myosin and actin-binding toxins, such as the hypervariable region of TccC3 (TccC3HVR) from Photorhabdus luminescens and ExoY from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In vitro binding assays and activity measurements demonstrate that Lifeact indeed competes with these proteins, providing an explanation for the altering effects of Lifeact on cell morphology in vivo. We therefore assessed the reliability of LDF-derived indices of cutaneous vasodilatation during incremental whole-body heating. Fourteen young men (age 24 (SD 5) years) completed three identical trials, each separated by 1 week. During each trial, a water-perfused suit was used to raise and clamp oesophageal temperature at 0.6°C (low-heat strain; LHS) and 1.2°C (moderate-heat strain; MHS) above baseline. LDF-derived skin blood flow (SkBF) was measured at three dorsal mid-forearm sites, with local skin temperature clamped at 34°C. Data were expressed as absolute cutaneous vascular conductance (CVCabs ; SkBF/mean arterial pressure) and normalised to maximal conductance (%CVCmax ) achieved via simultaneous local skin heating to 44°C and increasing oesophageal temperature to 1.8°C above baseline. Between-day reliability was characterised as measurement consistency across trials, while within-day reliability was characterised as measurement consistency across adjacent skin sites during each trial. Between- and within-day absolute reliability (coefficient of variation) generally improved with increasing heat strain, changing from poor (>25%) at baseline, poor-to-moderate (15-34%) at LHS, and moderate (10-25%) at MHS. Generally, these estimates were more consistent when expressed as %CVCmax . Conversely, relative reliability was mostly acceptable (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥0.70) during LHS and when data were expressed as CVCabs . These findings indicate that the consistency of LDF-derived CVC estimates during heat stress depends on the level of heat strain and method of data expression, which should be considered when designing and interpreting experiments.Exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacteria have been widely used in fermented milk, but interaction between the EPS and milk proteins has not been well studied. The results showed that EPS-YW11 tended to encase WP by ζ-potential analysis with a decrease in the surface charge of the protein fraction (from -26.00 mV to 15.30 mV), and an increase in the melting temperature of the protein fraction (from 76.31 °C to 84.48 °C) as shown by differential scanning calorimetry. Circular dichroism spectrometry showed that the EPS could induce structural change of WP, that is, increment in the content of α-helixes and random coils, There was stronger interaction between EPS-YW11 and WP at higher temperatures (60 °C, 90 °C) due to formation of intermolecular H-bonds and OH stretching vibration as indicated by infrared spectral analysis. A significant improvement in the texture (hardness, springiness, gumminess, resilience, cohesiveness, and chewiness) of the EPS-YW11/WP complex was also observed when compared to that of the EPS or WP alone. This was confirmed by microstructural observation of the EPS-YW11/WP complex that formed branched and porous structures, and it became more complex and stable with increased temperature treatment. Due to the strong interaction the EPS-YW11/WP exhibited improved functionality. This study identifies the potential of the EPS-YW11 to serve as a functional agent in the processing of fermented dairy products with enhanced textural stability and bioactivities such as cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant, and antibiofilm.
    Remdesivir is 1 of the repurposed drugs under investigation to treat patients with COVID-19. Clinicians and decision-makers need a summary of the most recent evidence. This scoping review maps the evidence on the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of remdesivir for patients with COVID-19, up to 14 September 2020.

    Our scoping review searched Pubmed, Embase (Ovid), Scopus and 17 primary trial registries for empirical publications or active registered clinical trials for data on the efficacy, effectiveness, or safety of remdesivir for COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the included publications.

    Seventeen empirical studies and 23 clinical trial registrations (n = 40) accumulated 46 508 participants. We found 4 published randomized-controlled trials accumulating 2293 patients. Two trials reported shorter median recovery time and better clinical status among patients who received remdesivir compared with the control groups. Observational studies report an association between remdesthe efficacy and safety of the antiviral. The findings of the remaining clinical trials expected to report results in 2020 will allow a quantitative synthesis of available evidence.Existing and projected economic losses caused by floods all over the world have generated a growing consensus about the need for investment in flood risk mitigation. Most of the evidence on the returns to risk reduction is based on cost-benefit analysis performed for specific measures, lacking a comprehensive appraisal of alternatives. This article presents an integrated approach to consistently prioritize potential flood mitigation measures in a river basin and determine the economically desirable investment level in flood risk reduction. An optimization model is developed to select the type, size, and schedule of flood risk mitigation measures over a planning horizon. The model is formulated as a dynamic mixed integer linear program and applied to a river basin where severe floods have occurred historically. A variety of individual and combinations of risk reduction measures are used as inputs for the model. Initial analysis is conducted for different scenarios of flood damage growth, investment financing constraints, and decisionmakers' preferences toward extreme and future losses.

This scoping review maps the evidence on the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of remdesivir for patients with COVID-19, up to 14 September 2020. Our scoping review searched Pubmed, Embase (Ovid), Scopus and 17 primary trial registries for empirical publications or active registered clinical trials for data on the efficacy, effectiveness, or safety of remdesivir for COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the included publications. Seventeen empirical studies and 23 clinical trial registrations (n = 40) accumulated 46 508 participants. We found 4 published randomized-controlled trials accumulating 2293 patients. Two trials reported shorter median recovery time and better clinical status among patients who received remdesivir compared with the control groups. Observational studies report an association between remdesthe efficacy and safety of the antiviral. This article presents an integrated approach to consistently prioritize potential flood mitigation measures in a river basin and determine the economically desirable investment level in flood risk reduction. An optimization model is developed to select the type, size, and schedule of flood risk mitigation measures over a planning horizon. The model is formulated as a dynamic mixed integer linear program and applied to a river basin where severe floods have occurred historically. A variety of individual and combinations of risk reduction measures are used as inputs for the model. Initial analysis is conducted for different scenarios of flood damage growth, investment financing constraints, and decisionmakers' preferences toward extreme and future losses.

  • The glyoxalase system was discovered over a hundred years ago and since then it has been claimed to provide the role of an indispensable enzyme system in order to protect cells from a toxic byproduct of glycolysis. This review gives a broad overview of what has been postulated in the last 30 years of glyoxalase research, but within this context it also challenges the concept that the glyoxalase system is an exclusive tool of detoxification and that its substrate, methylglyoxal, is solely a detrimental burden for every living cell due to its toxicity. An overview of consequences of a complete loss of the glyoxalase system in various model organisms is presented with an emphasis on the role of alternative detoxification pathways of methylglyoxal. Furthermore, this review focuses on the overlooked posttranslational modification of Glyoxalase 1 and its possible implications for cellular maintenance under various (patho-)physiological conditions. As a final note, an intriguing point of view for the substrate methylglyoxal is offered, the concept of methylglyoxal (MG)-mediated hormesis.Resident memory T (TRM) cells are a unique subset of CD8+ T cells that are present within certain tissues and do not recirculate through the blood. Long term memory establishment and maintenance are dependent on tissue population of memory T cells. They are characterized by dual CD69/CD103 positivity, and play a role in both response to viral infection and local cancer immunosurveillance. Human TRM cells demonstrate the increased expression of adhesion molecules to facilitate tissue retention, have reduced proliferation and produce both regulatory and immune responsive cytokines. TRM cell phenotype is often characterized by a distinct expression profile driven by Runx3, Blimp1, and Hobit transcription factors. The accumulation of TRM cells in tumors is associated with increased survival and response to immunotherapies, including anti-PD-1 and anti-CTLA-4. In this review, we explore potential mechanisms of TRM cell transformation and maintenance, as well as potential applications for the use of TRM cells in both the development of supportive therapies and establishing more accurate prognoses.Shigellosis is a diarrheal disease and the World Health Organization prompts the development of a vaccine against Shigella flexneri. Here, we evaluated the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of the chimeric multiepitope protein, named rMESF, in **** against lethal infection with S. flexneri. rMESF was administered to **** alone through the intranasal (i.n.) route or accompanied with Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) intradermically (i.d.), subcutaneously (s.c.), and intramuscular (i.m.), as well as with Imject alum (i.m.). All immunized **** increased IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, IgA and fecal IgA titers compared to PBS+CFA and PBS+alum control groups. Furthermore, i.n. immunization of **** with rMESF alone presented the highest titers of serum and fecal IgA. Cytokine levels (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, and IL-17) and lymphocyte proliferation increased in all experimental groups, with the highest lymphoproliferative response in i.n. **** immunized with rMESF alone, which presented 100% protection against S. flexneri. Results Thirteen face-to-face interviews were completed and lasted an average of 33 min. Three main barriers were identified to SSCB implementation; the difficulty of diagnosing sepsis, the suitability of the SSCB in a maternity setting as part of the pre-conditions phase, and the lack of staff training as part of the pre-implementation phase. Conclusion The findings emphasize the importance of adapting improvement initiatives with sufficient preparation of staff in the rationale use to the context of care bundles.
    Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) after treatment with bortezomib-based regimens in HBV-positive patients with multiple myeloma (MM) has been reported in the past few years. Nevertheless, there is evidence of inhibition of HBV replication by bortezomib in transgenic ****. However, there is still no clinical evidence that bortezomib inhibits HBV.

    A 55-year-old MM patient with a family history of MM, who was also a chronic HBV carrier, achieved HBV clearance after treatment with a bortezomib-based regimen in combination with anti-HBV drugs.

    The diagnosis was MM with chronic carrier of HBV.

    He received bortezomib-based regimen for MM as well as entecavir as a prophylaxis to prevent HBV reactivation.

    This patient achieved HBsAg and HBV-DNA clearance after 2 months and the remission was maintained during the next 2 years. He also achieved complete remission of MM and underwent consolidation therapy with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
