The Brain Tumor Social Media (#BTSM) Twitter hashtag was founded in February 2012 as a disease-specific hashtag for patients with brain tumor.

To understand #BTSM's role as a patient support system, we describe user descriptors, growth, interaction, and content sharing.

We analyzed all tweets containing #BTSM from 2012 to 2018 using the Symplur Signals platform to obtain data and to describe Symplur-defined user categories, tweet content, and trends in use over time. We created a network plot with all publicly available retweets involving #BTSM in 2018 to visualize key stakeholders and their connections to other users.

From 2012 to 2018, 59,764 unique users participated in #BTSM, amassing 298,904 tweets. The yearly volume of #BTSM tweets increased by 264.57% from 16,394 in 2012 to 43,373 in 2018 with #BTSM constantly trending in the top 15 list of disease hashtags, as well the top 15 list of tweet chats. Patient advocates generated the most #BTSM tweets (33.13%), while advocacy groups, caregivers, doctors, and researchers generated 7.01%, 4.63%, 3.86%, and 3.37%, respectively. Physician use, although still low, has increased over time. The 2018 network plot of retweets including #BTSM identifies a number of key stakeholders from the patient advocate, patient organization, and medical researcher domains and reveals the extent of their reach to other users.

From its start in 2012, #BTSM has grown exponentially over time. We believe its growth suggests its potential as a global source of brain tumor information on Twitter for patients, advocates, patient organizations as well as health care professionals and researchers.

According to current guidelines, oral antihistamines are the first line treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Up-dosing antihistamines up to fourfold the licensed dose is recommended if control is not achieved. Such indications are based mainly on expert´s opinions. Objectives To critically review and analyze clinical evidence regarding to efficacy and safety of higher-than-licensed dosage of second-generation oral antihistamines in CSU treatment.

A systematic literature review following a sensitive search strategy was performed. All articles published in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library between 1961 and October 2018 were examined. Publications with CSU patients treated with prescribed second-generation antihistamines in monotherapy comparing with either placebo, licensed dosage and/or higher dosage were included. Articles were evaluated by peer revisors. Quality was evaluated using Jadad and Oxford scores.

We identified 337 articles, 14 were included in the final evaluation; 6 focus on fexofenadine, 2 on cetirizine, levocetirizine, rupatadine and desloratadine, and 1 for ebastine and bilastine. Only 5 studies were placebo-controlled. The number of included patients ranged from 20 to 439. Observation lapse was ≤ 16 weeks. High fexofenadine doses produced dose-dependent significant response and controlled urticaria in a majority of patients. Cetirizine, levocetirizine, rupatadine and bilastine showed an increased effectiveness when up-dosing. Most frequent adverse events were headache and drowsiness.

The low quality and heterogeneity of the articles reviewed made impossible to reach any robust conclusions and unveil the need to develop large-scale randomized clinical trials.

Using the newly fertilized Caenorhabditis elegans zygote, we show that the mitotic Polo-like kinase PLK-1 phosphorylates the lamin LMN-1 to promote timely lamina disassembly and subsequent merging of the parental genomes into a single nucleus after mitosis. Expression of non-phosphorylatable versions of LMN-1, which affect lamina depolymerization during mitosis, is sufficient to prevent the mixing of the parental chromosomes into a single nucleus in daughter cells. Finally, we recapitulate lamina depolymerization by PLK-1 in vitro demonstrating that LMN-1 is a direct PLK-1 target. Our findings indicate that the timely removal of lamin is essential for the merging of parental chromosomes at the beginning of life in C. elegans and possibly also in humans, where a defect in this process might be fatal for embryo development. The internalization of the central nervous system, termed neurulation in vertebrates, is a critical step in embryogenesis. Open questions remain regarding how force propels coordinated tissue movement during the process, and little is known as to how internalization happens in invertebrates. We show that in C. elegans morphogenesis, apical constriction in the retracting pharynx drives involution of the adjacent neuroectoderm. HMR-1/cadherin mediates this process via inter-tissue attachment, as well as cohesion within the neuroectoderm. Our results demonstrate that HMR-1 is capable of mediating embryo-wide reorganization driven by a centrally located force generator, and indicate a non-canonical use of cadherin on the basal side of an epithelium that may apply to vertebrate neurulation. Additionally, we highlight shared morphology and gene expression in tissues driving involution, which suggests that neuroectoderm involution in C. elegans is potentially homologous with vertebrate neurulation and thus may help elucidate the evolutionary origin of the brain.Scientists have created the most detailed map of the fruit fly brain to date, identifying over 25,000 neurons and 20 million synapses.
This study aimed to evaluate the use of a cell savage and its impact on the amount of allogenic blood transfused to the patients during idiopathic scoliosis surgery.

A total of 142 randomly selected patients with scoliosis had been included in this study. The adult group consisted of 78 patients, and the pediatric group, 64 patients. Both groups were divided into subgroups (pre-cell saver era and cell saver era). Data on the following parameters were collected amount of blood transfused intraoperatively, within 24h postoperatively, and overall. The number of patients who received transfusion was counted as the number of patients who avoided any transfusion. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/itacnosertib.html For statistical purposes, we performed unpaired student t-test, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney test.

There was no significant difference in adult groups perioperatively. In the pediatric group, there was a statistically significant difference intraoperatively. Economic analysis of blood management showed positive numbers for both groups, where more than 1 unit of blood was transfused.
