While these technologies imply appropriate and safe abortion care, legal and policy ambiguities impact health outcomes. In this article, we draw on an ethnography of abortion care delivery practice conducted in one district in Eastern Uganda between August 2018 and March 2019, with data from interviews and observations, both of interactions and during quality of care improvement and training meetings. We illuminate how, in the context of a financialized healthcare system and legal restrictions, the meanings and use of medical technologies and abortion care vary across different health facility types. In public health facilities, health workers become state agents in the control of women's bodies. In private health facilities, they become transgressors, who use medical technologies to help women attain termination surreptitiously. Health workers offset risks associated with any involvement in termination, such that pecuniary interests dominate their motivation. Normalized and disciplinary power enact and reproduce unsafe and risky conditions, leading to poor abortion care outcomes. We illustrate the mechanisms of domination and tactics of resistance in abortion care, and expose conditions upon which unsafe and risky outcomes are contingent. Infants must learn to carve events at their joints to best understand who is doing what to whom or whether an object or agent has reached its intended goal. Recent behavioral research demonstrates that infants do not see the world as a movie devoid of meaning, but rather as a series of sub-events that include agents moving in different manners along paths from sources to goals. This research uses behavioral and electrophysiological methods to investigate infants' (10-14 months) attention to disruptions within relatively unfamiliar human action that does not rely on goal-objects to signal attainment (i.e., Olympic figure skating). Infants' visual (Study 1, N = 48) and neurophysiological (Study 2, N = 21) responses to pauses at starting points, endpoints, and within-action locations were recorded. Both measures revealed differential responses to pauses at endpoints relative to pauses elsewhere in the action (i.e., starting point; within-action). Eye-tracking data indicated that infants' visual attention was gretential merits and pitfalls of applying behavioral techniques in conjunction with brain-based measures to study infant development. The study reports shelf-life enhancement of candied mango by infusion of gingerols. Gingerols infused product (GIP), with 3.67 mg gingerols/100 g and non-infused products (control) were packed in multilayer metalized (MET), and ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) based pouches and stored at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 120 days. Degradation kinetics of browning and related parameters showed following order kβ-carotene > ksensory (color) > knon-enzymatic browning > kvitamin C > kantioxidant capacity > k sensory (overall) > ktotal phenolics > kgingerols, resulting in multiple cutoff criteria and predicted shelf-lives (SLpredicted). The application of chemometrics simplified the kinetic interpretations and hence the predictions. Gingerols infusion retarded the deterioration of all quality parameters and substantially enhanced SLpredicted of GIP over control, irrespective of storage conditions. Finally, chemometric based SLpredicted of 144 days closely predicted the actual shelf-life of 142 days for control samples stored in EVOH pouches at 25 °C, in contrast to kinetics based SLpredicted of 185 days. The characteristics and antioxidant activity of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) from 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), a human milk oligosaccharide, and α-lactalbumin (α-LA) were investigated. MRPs were prepared by reacting 2'-FL with α-LA at 60 °C and 79% relative humidity for up to 72 h. The absorbance and fluorescence intensity of heated α-LA-2'-FL increased as the heating time increased, while the free amino group content decreased, confirming that 2'-FL reacted with α-LA and produced various MRPs at different incubation stages. Conjugates of 2'-FL and α-LA and aggregation of α-LA were observed by SDS-PAGE. The secondary structure of α-LA did not change significantly after reacting with 2'-FL. In terms of antioxidant activity, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and reducing power of α-LA-2'-FL increased significantly when compared with the protein only sample (p  less then  0.05). The findings provide a foundation for the characterization and functional analysis of MRPs in dairy products. The efficacy of pulsed light (PL) for the surface decontamination of ready-to-eat dry-cured ham was studied in two Spanish varieties, Serrano and Iberian. Listeriainnocua was inoculated on the surface of ham slices that were vacuum-packaged and flashed with 2.1, 4.2 and 8.4 J/cm2. Survivors were enumerated immediately after treatment. Peroxide values, sensory analysis and volatile profile were investigated during storage at 4 and 20 °C. Inactivation of Listeria was higher in Iberian (ca. 2 log cfu/cm2) than in Serrano ham (ca. 1 log cfu/cm2) with 8.4 J/cm2. PL did not increase the peroxide values above the usual levels reported in dry-cured ham, and no rancid notes were observed in the sensory analysis. PL-treated samples showed an increase in the concentration of some volatile compounds, such as methional, dimethyl disulfide and 1-octen-3-one, which imparted slight sulfur and metallic notes, although they disappeared during storage.
