Prebiotics may modify the biological processes in the chickens' gastrointestinal tract to improve poultry performance and health. Prebiotics are natural feed additives that offer many economic advantages by decreasing mortality rates, increasing growth rates, and improving birds' feed efficiency. Prebiotic action potentially affects the degradation of indigestible dietary compounds, the synthesis of nitrogen components and vitamins, and simplifies the removal of undesirable elements in the diet. Prebiotics could also induce desirable gut microbiome modifications and affect host metabolism and immune health. It is worth mentioning that gut bacteria metabolize the prebiotic compounds into organic compounds that the host can subsequently use. It is important to limit the concept of prebiotics to compounds that influence the metabolism of resident microorganisms. Any medicinal component or feed ingredient beneficial to the intestinal microecosystem can be considered a prebiotic. Combined with the correlation analysis results among the measured species and engine technical parameters, the formation processes and influence factors of carbonaceous components are also inferred in this study. Besides, together with OC to EC ratio, n-alkanes to PAHs ratio, etc., EC1 to soot-EC ratio in PM can be considered as tracer characteristic of high-sulfur-content HFO ship distinguished from diesel fuel ships. Profiles of n-alkanes and PAHs in PM can be used to distinguish shipping emission source from other combustion sources. Moreover, characteristics of carbonaceous components in size-segregated particles are also discussed, including OC, EC, OC and EC fragments, as well as organic matters. Results show that most of the particle mass, OC, EC, and organic matters are concentrated in fine particles with size of less than 1.1 μm, indicating the significance of ultrafine particles. Formation processes of OC and EC fragments, EC1 and soot-EC are also deduced and proved combined with the characteristics of OC and EC fragments, organic matters, and especially PAHs. Physiological responses in such tests can be highly variable and historical control data (HCD), values recorded from previous studies performed under similar conditions, can be useful to recognise the average responses over time. Here, we analysed egg hatching success and larval (naupliar) immobilisation/mortality of A. tonsa Mediterranean strain, cultured in laboratory conditions since 2008 and used as model organisms in ecotoxicology tests. Our aims were to evaluate the physiological response and sensitivity of A. tonsa over eight years of bioassays, and to compare our HCD with reference values, in order to assess the suitability of such a long-term culture for ecotoxicology studies. Acartia tonsa eggs were exposed for 48 h to the reference toxicant nickel chloride (NiCl2) and the % of egg hatching success and naupliar viability were compared to controls. A total of 59 acute tests, displayed in Shewhart-like control charts, showed a high mean percentage of egg hatching success (85.60% ± 5.90 SD) recorded for the whole period, and a low mean percentage of naupliar immobilisation/mortality (6.73% ± 6.38 SD) in controls. Effective concentration (EC50) for NiCl2 registered a stable mean of 0.14 mg Ni/L (± 0.047 SD) over time. Overall, our long-term dataset confirms the suitability of this copepod species for ecotoxicology studies even after years of culturing in laboratory conditions. It is advisable that other laboratories with long-term datasets made their own control charts, to allow data comparison and to improve test protocols. Previously we reported that H2S induced the differential expression of mRNAs that implicating apoptosis in thymus, however, the roles of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) in H2S-induced thymus injury are still unknown. Pollution gases could alter the expression of ncRNAs, which have been shown to play important roles in many physiological and pathophysiological processes, including immune activity. This study revealed that H2S exposure induced 9 differentially expressed circRNAs and 15 differentially expressed miRNAs in chicken thymus. Furthermore, the circRNA - miRNA - mRNA network was constructed. We discovered that circR-PTPN23 - miR-15a - E2F3 was involved in the cell cycle and apoptosis. Further, an in vitro H2S exposure model was established using HD11 cell line and demonstrated that H2S suppressed cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Moreover, ciR-PTPN23 and E2F3 were downregulated, but miR-15a was upregulated in both the thymus and HD11 cell line after H2S exposure.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is known to be a risk factor of pneumonia after esophagectomy. In this study, we investigated the relationship of airflow limitation with the occurrence and the severity of pneumonia in esophageal cancer patients who underwent esophagectomy.
We enrolled 844 patients who underwent curative esophagectomy between 2009 and 2018. The airflow limitation was evaluated using the percent-predicted forced expiratory volume at 1s (%FEV1) with spirometry.
There were 597 (70.7%), 141 (16.7%), 68 (8.1%), and 38 patients (4.5%) with %FEV1 of ≥ 90%, 80-90%, 70-80%, and < 70% categories, respectively. One hundred and ninety-one patients (22.6%) occurred pneumonia, and the incidences of pneumonia in each category of patients were 18.8%, 28.4%, 29.4%, and 50.0%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, the categories of 80%-90%, 70-80%, and < 70% were significantly associated with a higher incidence of postoperative pneumonia (OR 1.57; 95% CI 1.02-2.43, OR 1.87; 95% CI 1.04-3.36, OR 3.34; 95% CI 1.66-6.71, respectively), with the %FEV1 category of ≥ 90% as reference. The incidence of severe pneumonia of Clavien-Dindo grade III or higher was also significantly associated with the %FEV1. In patients without COPD, the incidence of pneumonia was significantly higher in those with %FEV1 < 90% than in those with %FEV1 ≥ 90% (32.2% versus 17.5%, p < 0.001).
The airflow limitation can help predict the occurrence of pneumonia after esophagectomy in patients with and without COPD. Exclusive preventive measures should be considered in patients with reduced %FEV1 undergoing esophagectomy.

Future navy officers require unique training for emergency medical response in the isolated maritime environment. The authors issued a workshop on extremity bleeding control, using four different commercial extremity tourniquets onboard a training sail ship. The purposes were to assess participants' perceptions of this educational experience and evaluate self-application simplicity while navigating on high seas.
A descriptive observational study was conducted as part of a workshop issued to volunteer training officers. A post-workshop survey collected their perceptions about the workshops' content usefulness and adequacy, tourniquet safety, self-application simplicity, and device preference. Tourniquet preference was measured by frequency count while the rest of the studied variables on a one-to-ten Likert scale. Frequencies and percentages were calculated for the studied variables, and application simplicity means compared using the ANOVA test (p < 0.05).
Fifty-one Spanish training naval officers, aged 20 or 21, perceived high sea workshop content's usefulness, adequacy, and safety level at 8.6/10, 8.7/10, and 7.5/10, respectively. As for application simplicity, CAT and SAM-XT were rated equally with a mean of 8.5, followed by SWAT (7.9) and RATS (6.9), this one statistically different from the rest (p < 0.01). Windlass types were preferred by 94%.

They were also preferred by nine out of every ten participants.Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) are two important pathogens associated with a variety of disease syndromes that result in substantial financial losses in animal husbandry. This study was performed to assess the seroprevalence of antibodies to BVDV and PPRV among alpacas raised in Shanxi Province of northern China. Serum samples were obtained from 246 alpacas in Taiyuan (n=182), Xinzhou (n=31), and Jinzhong cities (n=33) of Shanxi Province, and serological testing was carried out using the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Overall seroprevalence to BVDV was 3.25% (95% CI 1.03-5.47), and seropositive alpacas were found only in Taiyuan City. The overall PPRV seroprevalence in alpacas was 28.86% (95% CI 23.20-34.52). While no PPRV-seropositive alpacas were found in Xinzhou City, the seroprevalence of PPRV was 90.91% (95% CI 81.10-100.72) in Jinzhong City and 22.53% (95% CI 16.46-28.60) in Taiyuan City, respectively, which showed a statistically significant difference. To our knowledge, the present work is the first report on seroprevalence of BVDV and PPRV in alpacas in China, which provides baseline information for the control of infection.
We previously suggested an ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporotic rat model showing an impaired alveolar bone defect healing. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) on alveolar bone defect healing in OVX-induced osteoporotic rats.
A total of forty-one female rats were divided into four groups a collagen group (n=10), a PDGF-BB group (n=11), a BMP-2 group (n=10), and a control group (n=10). Four months after OVX, alveolar bone drill-hole defects were created and grafted with collagen gel, rhPDGF-BB/collagen gel, or rhBMP-2/collagen gel. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sirtinol.html The defects in the control group were not grafted with any material. Defect healing was evaluated by histological, histomorphometric, and microcomputed tomographic (micro-CT) analyses at 2 and 4 weeks.

The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply-rooted tradition that affects predominantly regions of Africa and Asia. Because of migration flows, FGM is an issue of increasing concern worldwide. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cinchocaine.html FGM is now carried out in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and more specifically among immigrant communities from countries where it is common. This study aims to assess the experience, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs related to FGM of migrant women and men from FGM-affected countries residing in Spain and the United Kingdom. A phenomenological qualitative approach was used. Participants (n=23) were recruited by using the snowball sampling technique until data saturation was reached. Data were collected through 18 open-ended interviews and a focus group. Of the 23 participants, 20 women had undergone FGM. The following five themes were generated from interviews (a) FGM practice development, (b) knowledge about the practice, (c) reasons for performing FGM, (d) attitudes toward continuing or abandoning the practice, and (e) criminalization of FGM. The study here presented identifies a lack of information, memory, and knowledge about the practice of FGM and typology among women with FGM. The justification of the practice seems to be based on a multifactorial model, where sociocultural and economic factors, sexual factors, hygienic-esthetic factors, and religious-spiritual factors take on a greater role in the analysis of the interviews carried out. The participants practically unanimously agree to advocate the abandonment and eradication of this harmful traditional practice. The knowledge displayed in this study may provide a basis for improving awareness and healthcare in such collectives, aiming the eradication of this harmful traditional practice.
A systematic review was performed to identify the types of physical activities effective as interventions in preventing metabolic syndrome in middle-aged women.
Electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL) served as the data sources. Therefore, a proper understanding of the function of miRNAs in specific cell types and cell states is required for the successful application of this technology. In the present review, we will first provide an overview of the role of ROS in contributing to DHD and the currently available treatments. We will then discuss the newer gene therapies with a specific focus on the role of miRNAs as the causative factors and therapeutic targets to combat ROS mediated DHD. Future Directions The future of miRNA therapeutics in tackling ROS mediated DHD is dependent on a complete understanding of how miRNAs behave in different cells and environments. Several papers already reported better outcomes of tricuspid valve repair with ring annuloplasty compared to suture techniques. However, the follow-up is usually limited to 10 years. With this study, we aim to analyze the results of tricuspid valve repair according to the technique employed when the follow-up is extended to more than 15 years.
A retrospective review of our institutional database was carried on to find all patients who underwent tricuspid valve repair between January 1998 and December 2004. Kaplan-Meier method was employed to estimate survival and log-rank test was used to make intergroup comparison. Cox regression was employed to identify risk factor for mortality. Cumulative incidence function using death as competitive outcome was used to estimate cardiac death. To describe the time course of tricuspid regurgitation, a longitudinal analysis using generalized estimating equations with random intercept for correlated data was performed.
One hundred forty-six patients were identified 89 in the suture group and 57 in the ring group. No difference in term of long-term survival and cardiac death was evident between the two groups. A significant higher rate of tricuspid regurgitation ≥2+ and ≥3+ recurrence was evident in the suture group during the whole follow-up (p < 0.001).
Our results corroborate the better results of tricuspid valve repair by means of ring implantation compared to suture techniques also when the follow-up is extended up to 18 years. Ring annuloplasty should be considered the first option for tricuspid valve repair due to a better durability.

The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply-rooted tradition that affects predominantly regions of Africa and Asia. Because of migration flows, FGM is an issue of increasing concern worldwide. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cinchocaine.html FGM is now carried out in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and more specifically among immigrant communities from countries where it is common. This study aims to assess the experience, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs related to FGM of migrant women and men from FGM-affected countries residing in Spain and the United Kingdom. A phenomenological qualitative approach was used. Participants (n=23) were recruited by using the snowball sampling technique until data saturation was reached. Data were collected through 18 open-ended interviews and a focus group. Of the 23 participants, 20 women had undergone FGM. The following five themes were generated from interviews (a) FGM practice development, (b) knowledge about the practice, (c) reasons for performing FGM, (d) attitudes toward continuing or abandoning the practice, and (e) criminalization of FGM. The study here presented identifies a lack of information, memory, and knowledge about the practice of FGM and typology among women with FGM. The justification of the practice seems to be based on a multifactorial model, where sociocultural and economic factors, sexual factors, hygienic-esthetic factors, and religious-spiritual factors take on a greater role in the analysis of the interviews carried out. The participants practically unanimously agree to advocate the abandonment and eradication of this harmful traditional practice. Conventional GC-MS analysis was used to confirm compound identification. Fluorine-19 NMR was proposed for the quantification of fluorinated synthetic cannabinoids and was successfully implemented on both 400 MHz and 60 MHz NMR spectrometers. Change in BMI is recognized as a key health indicator among midlife and older adults, though predictors of BMI change in this group have received little attention.
The aim of this study was to examine relations between hypothesized predictors (i.e., gender, cardiovascular disease [CVD] risk status, depressive symptoms, social support) and BMI change over 10 years, among midlife and older adults.
Participants were adults ages 50-74at baseline (N=5,688, 64% women) who completed four assessments over 10 years. Gender, CVD risk status (i.e., diagnosis of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or both), depressive symptoms, and perceived social support were assessed at baseline, and BMI was calculated from height and weight reports at all assessments. Multilevel models tested for concurrent and prospective relations between predictors and BMI change (effect size estimates as semipartial correlation coefficients, sr), as well as whether observed relations were further moderated by baseline BMI category (underweight, ecreases (which are associated with long term health risks for older adults), findings reveal unique patterns of change in BMI among subgroups of midlife and older adults, and may allow for early identification of those with noteworthy BMI changes after age 50.There is an increasing interest in using ordinal data collection methods, such as the best-worst scaling (BWS), to develop preference-based tariffs (value sets) for health-related quality of life instruments, yet the evidence on their performance is limited. This paper proposed to use an anchored BWS technique (in which the state of "death" served as an anchoring state) to directly develop a utility weight that lies on a scale anchored at 0 = death and 1 = full health for the Simplified Chinese version of the Short Form 6 Dimension version 2 (SF-6Dv2). An online panel from the general population of Mainland China completed an online survey between 20th July and 19th August, 2019 and 463 respondents were included in the main analysis. The Conditional Logit (CL) model, which assumes a homogeneous preference, as well as a Hierarchical Bayes (HB) model, which accounts for preference heterogeneity, were used to analyze the BWS data. The model performances were evaluated based on monotonicity and model-fit statistics. The majority of respondents indicated that the BWS questions were easy to understand and complete. Initial analyses suggested that the best and worst choices should not be pooled together. Based on model fit statistics of separated estimations and previous literature on health state valuation studies using BWS, the best choices were used for developing the final algorithm. The HB estimates were found to have better model performance than the CL estimates. This study provides an essential insight into using an anchored BWS approach in health state valuation. A significant relationship was observed only in the acute phase motor function and posterior segment of the FAT. The middle segment was involved in motor function, but it did not have a sufficient significance level compared to the posterior segment.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy has more than quadrupled in prevalence over the past two decades and continues to increase steadily every year. With no defined standard of care for the management of pain during the peripartum period, variability in treatment plans potentially leaves room for interrupted patient care, decreased patient satisfaction, and poorer outcomes. The impact of OUD and its management during the peripartum period has become more widely discussed over the past several years and is the focus of this review.
Current recommendations including developing a detailed institutional plan for the management of pain for women with OUD during the intrapartum and postpartum periods. There is tremendous value in exploring partnerships with other specialties, including addiction medicine, and behavioral health and obstetrics in development of policies and procedures. Consistency within institutions is critical to improve patient outcomes.
This review will address both pain management recommendations and best clinical practices regarding management of the parturient during the transition periods of the peripartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period. Novel approaches and perspectives from case reports and narrative experience will also be discussed. There are many opportunities in this field for further studies, research, and evidence-based guidelines that promote an established standard of care.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy has more than quadrupled in prevalence over the past two decades and continues to increase steadily every year. With no defined standard of care for the management of pain during the peripartum period, variability in treatment plans potentially leaves room for interrupted patient care, decreased patient satisfaction, and poorer outcomes. The impact of OUD and its management during the peripartum period has become more widely discussed over the past several years and is the focus of this review. Current recommendations including developing a detailed institutional plan for the management of pain for women with OUD during the intrapartum and postpartum periods. There is tremendous value in exploring partnerships with other specialties, including addiction medicine, and behavioral health and obstetrics in development of policies and procedures. To measure medical students' perceptions of their educational environment and to determine the potential differences in those perceptions with regard to gender and the year of study.
The cross-sectional study was conducted at the College of Medicine, Dar Al Uloom University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2018-19, and comprised medical students enrolled at the college. Data was collected using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure scale. Data was analysed using SPSS 22.
Of the 262 students approached, 191(73%) responded. The total mean score was 122.49±21.50. Perception of educational environment was higher for male students and advanced-level students (p<0.05).

To seek optimal keV settings for imaging carpal tunnel in adults by dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) monoenergetic technique; to describe anatomic characteristics of carpal tunnel and to observe correlation between carpal bony and soft tissue structures.
DECT images of 20 wrists (11 left and 9 right wrists; 14 men, mean age 26.93±1.38 years, range 23 to 28, and 6 women, mean age 24.17 ± 0.98 years, range 23 to 26) were evaluated. Monoenergetic images were reconstructed at 42, 62, 82, 102, 122, and 142 keV. Image quality was assessed along a 5-point Likert scale, and the highest-quality images were chosen for quantitative analysis. Two musculoskeletal radiologists performed both analyses independently.
The optimal energy spectrum with the best contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for monoenergetic images were at 62 keV (19 wrists, 95%) and 61 keV (1 wrist, 5%). There was substantial interobserver agreement between the readers in the 5-point Likert scale analysis of image quality (k= 0.793). Bland-Altman plots also indicated good agreement between observers in quantitative analysis. Intra-category 1 and 2 correlation was mostly discovered at hamate hook level and middle level of pisiform (P < 0.05), while bony and soft tissue structures partly reached correlation (P < 0.05).

To assess the outcome of endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysm over 15 years.
The retrospective study was conducted at the at Radiology Department of Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised medical records from April 2003 to April 2018 of patients who received endovascular treatment for intracranial aneurysm. Multiple variables reviewed included demographics, clinical presentation, aneurysm morphology, technique used, technique outcome and clinical outcome. Data was analysed using SPSS 22.
Of the 242 patients, 111(45.8%) were males and 131(54.1%) were female. The overall mean age was 46.3+/-13.543 years (range 9-78years). Aneurysm size was <5mm in 95(40.4%) patients, 5-10mm in 98(41.7%) and >10mm in 42(17.9%) patients. Aneurysms were located in the anterior communicating artery in 93(38.4%) patients, internal carotid artery 48(19.8%) patients and posterior communicating artery 26(10.7%) patients. To assess the awareness of diabetic patients about diabetic retinopathy.
The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Ophthalmology Department, Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from April 2018 to April 2019, and comprised diabetic patients of either gender aged 21-80 years. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic, diabetes and diabetic retinopathy characteristics. Fundoscopic examination was done, and the presence and stage of diabetic retinopathy were documented. Data was analysed using SPSS 20.
Of the 132 subjects, 9(6.8%) were male and 123(93.2%) were females. The majority 64(48.5%) was aged 61-80 years. Overall, 74(56.1%) patients were aware that diabetes could affect their eyes, 57(43.2%) were never diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, 76(57.6%) had gained information about diabetic retinopathy from ophthalmologists, 61(46.2%) and 29(22%) respondents reported that eyes should be examined 'only when vision is affected' and 'every 6 months' respectively, 98(74.2%) said the biggest barrier in getting eyes examined earlier was 'lack of knowledge', 23(17.4%) believed surgery was done for diabetic retinopathy treatment and 33(25%) believed that surgery, laser and injections all can be used. Significant relationship of diabetic retinopathy was found with duration of diabetes and the general health status (p<0.05).

DECT images of 20 wrists (11 left and 9 right wrists; 14 men, mean age 26.93±1.38 years, range 23 to 28, and 6 women, mean age 24.17 ± 0.98 years, range 23 to 26) were evaluated. Monoenergetic images were reconstructed at 42, 62, 82, 102, 122, and 142 keV. Image quality was assessed along a 5-point Likert scale, and the highest-quality images were chosen for quantitative analysis. Two musculoskeletal radiologists performed both analyses independently. With the addition of injectable ofatumumab, and the two oral sphingosine one phosphate modulators siponimod and ozanimod, ten HE DMTs are now available for pwMS, though variation in licensing status and cost may limit their use in some healthcare environments. Real World evidence based on large MS registry data suggests the superiority of early HE DMT over a slow treatment escalation approach; delaying HE DMT leads to more rapid and often irreversible disability accrual. Mechanistically, B-cell depletion, particularly memory B-cell suppression, is a common denominator closely associated with DMT efficacy.
The concept that HE DMTs are necessarily associated with a high risk of adverse effects, is no longer supported by the evidence. The rather predictable and manageable risk profile of most HE DMTs should lower the threshold for clinicians to discuss such treatment with pwMS as a first line approach.

Mangiferin (MF) is a natural phytopolyphenol, which displays potential pharmacological properties involving antibacterial, anti-inflammation, antioxidant and anti-tumor. However, little is known about the roles of MF in lung injury. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the modulatory effects and molecular mechanisms by which MF operates in sepsis-induced lung injury.
To examine the protective properties of MF, an in vivo model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury in **** and an in vitro model of LPS-treated J774A.1 cells were established, respectively. The results revealed that MF treatment significantly relieved LPS-induced pathological injury and inflammatory response in murine lung tissues. Meanwhile, MF treatment also inhibited nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation and pyroptosis induced by LPS. In macrophage-specific NLRP3 deficiency **** treated with LPS, MF showed little protective effects. NLRP3 overexpression by adenovirus could also offset the beneficial effects of MF in LPS-treated J774A.1 cells. Sixteen-month-old healthy male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into five groups control, anesthesia plus sham surgery, anesthesia plus splenectomy, LMK235 treatment, and PBS treatment. Mangiferin (MF) is a natural phytopolyphenol, which displays potential pharmacological properties involving antibacterial, anti-inflammation, antioxidant and anti-tumor. However, little is known about the roles of MF in lung injury. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the modulatory effects and molecular mechanisms by which MF operates in sepsis-induced lung injury. To examine the protective properties of MF, an in vivo model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury in mice and an in vitro model of LPS-treated J774A.1 cells were established, respectively. The results revealed that MF treatment significantly relieved LPS-induced pathological injury and inflammatory response in murine lung tissues. Meanwhile, MF treatment also inhibited nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation and pyroptosis induced by LPS. In macrophage-specific NLRP3 deficiency mice treated with LPS, MF showed little protective effects. NLRP3 overexpression by adenovirus could also offset the beneficial effects of MF in LPS-treated J774A.1 cells.
