We use two fine-scale health datasets collected in a rural district of Madagascar to identify socio-ecological covariates associated with childhood DD. We constructed generalized linear mixed models including socio-demographic, climatic and landcover variables and estimated variable importance via multi-model inference. We find that socio-demographic variables, and not environmental variables, are strong predictors of the spatial distribution of disease risk at both individual and commune-level (cluster of villages) spatial scales. Climatic variables predicted strong seasonality in DD, with the highest incidence in colder, drier months, but did not explain spatial patterns. Interestingly, the occurrence of a national holiday was highly predictive of increased DD incidence, highlighting the need for including cultural factors in modelling efforts. Our findings suggest that precision health mapping efforts that do not include socio-demographic covariates may have reduced explanatory power at the local scale. Given the widespread and well-documented impact of elevated CO2 on fish auditory anatomy, predictions of how fish life-history functions dependent on hearing may respond to climate change may need to be reassessed.If collecting research data is perceived as poorly rewarded compared to data synthesis and analysis, this can slow overall research progress via two effects. Here, we advocate for a second career currency in the form of data contributions statements embedded within applications for jobs, promotions and research grants. This workable step forward would provide for peer opinion to operate across thousands of selection and promotion committees and granting panels. In this way, fair valuation of data contributions relative to publications could emerge.The fitness cost associated with the production of bacterial capsules is considered to be offset by the protection provided by these extracellular structures against biotic aggressions or abiotic stress. However, it is unknown if the capsule contributes to fitness in the absence of these. Here, we explored conditions favouring the maintenance of the capsule in Klebsiella pneumoniae, where the capsule is known to be a major virulence factor. Using short-term experimental evolution on different Klebsiella strains, we showed that small environmental variations have a strong impact on the maintenance of the capsule. Capsule inactivation is frequent in nutrient-rich, but scarce in nutrient-poor media. Competitions between wild-type and capsule mutants in nine different strains confirmed that the capsule is costly in nutrient-rich media. Surprisingly, these results also showed that the presence of a capsule provides a clear fitness advantage in nutrient-poor conditions by increasing both growth rates and population yields. The comparative analyses of the wild-type and capsule mutants reveal complex interactions between the environment, genetic background and serotype even in relation to traits known to be relevant during pathogenesis. In conclusion, our data suggest there are novel roles for bacterial capsules yet to be discovered and further supports the notion that the capsule's role in virulence may be a by-product of its contribution to bacterial adaptation outside the host.

Quantitative mass spectrometry analysis allowed us to obtain a comprehensive view of hydrogen sulfide signaling via changes in the persulfidation levels of key protein targets involved in ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation and autophagy, among others.The exponential increase in textile cotton wastes generation and the ineffective processing mechanism to mitigate its environmental impact by developing functional materials with unique properties for geotechnical applications, wastewater, packaging, and biomedical engineering have become emerging global concerns among researchers. A comprehensive study of a processed cotton fibres isolation technique and their applications are highlighted in this review. Surface modification of cotton wastes fibre increases the adsorption of dyes and heavy metals removal from wastewater. Cotton wastes fibres have demonstrated high adsorption capacity for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater. Cotton wastes fibres have found remarkable application in slope amendments, reinforcement of expansive soils and building materials, and a proven source for isolation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Several research work on the use of cotton waste for functional application rather than disposal has been done. However, no review study has discussed the potentials of cotton wastes from source (Micro-Nano) to application. This review critically analyses novel isolation techniques of CNC from cotton wastes with an in-depth study of a parameter variation effect on their yield. Different pretreatment techniques and efficiency were discussed. From the analysis, chemical pretreatment is considered the most efficient extraction of CNCs from cotton wastes. The pretreatment strategies can suffer variation in process conditions, resulting in distortion in the extracted cellulose's crystallinity. Acid hydrolysis using sulfuric acid is the most used extraction process for cotton wastes-based CNC. A combined pretreatment process, such as sonication and hydrolysis, increases the crystallinity of cotton-based CNCs. The improvement of the reinforced matrix interface of textile fibres is required for improved packaging and biomedical applications for the sustainability of cotton-based CNCs.The efficiency roll-off and operational lifetime of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a tetradentate Pt(II) emitter is improved by engaging an n-doped electron-transporting layer (ETL). Compared to those devices with non-doped ETL, the driving voltage is lowered, the charged carrier is balanced, and the exciton density in the emissive layer (EML) is decreased in the device with n-doped ETL with 8-hydroxyquinolinolatolithium (Liq). High luminance of almost 70,000 cd m-2 and high current efficiency of 40.5 cd A-1 at high luminance of 10,000 cd m-2 is achieved in the device with 50 wt%-Liq-doped ETL. More importantly, the extended operational lifetime of 1945 h is recorded at the initial luminance of 1000 cd m-2 in the 50 wt%-Liq-doped device, which is longer than that of the device with non-doped ETL by almost 10 times. This result manifests the potential application of tetradentate Pt(II) complexes in the OLED industry.The non-toxic inorganic antimicrobial agents iodine (I2) and copper (Cu) are interesting alternatives for biocidal applications. Iodine is broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent but its use is overshadowed by compound instability, uncontrolled iodine release and short-term effectiveness. These disadvantages can be reduced by forming complex-stabilized, polymeric polyiodides. The I5- repetition units can be understood as a triodide anion connected to two iodine molecules.The concept of the Marine Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) requires new solutions in many areas from law, through economics, social sciences, environmental issues to the technology and even ethics. It also plays a central role in the work of numerous research teams dealing with the ship motion control systems. This article presents the results of the experiments with application of the selected control methods in automatic steering of the movement of an autonomous ship in the two regimes during the maneuvers at low speed (in a harbor confined waters) and during the lake trials in open water conditions. In the first case, multidimensional state controller synthesized with Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) algorithms was used, while, in the second case, Model Predictive Control (MPC) control was adopted. The object for which the experiments were carried out was 124 scale model of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier. The paper presents also the design of the measurement and control system and the user interface. The experiments were conducted in the natural conditions on the lake. The results of the experiments indicate the fundamental role of the measurement system in the process of controlling an autonomous ship.Background and Objectives Acute resistance exercise (RE) reduces vagal modulation and increases sympathovagal balance, which increases the risk for arrythmias. Materials and Methods Twenty-one resistance-trained individuals (men n = 11, women n = 10) between the ages of 19 and 25 y were analyzed for autonomic modulation in response to acute RE and a control (CON). Measures of autonomic modulation were collected at rest, 15 (R15), and 30 (R30) min following both conditions. Heart rate (HR), log transformed root mean square of successive differences (lnRMSSD), total power (lnTP), low-frequency power (lnLF), high-frequency power (lnHF), sample entropy (SampEn), and Lempel-Ziv entropy (LZEn) were measured at all time points. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) has emerged as a therapeutic target in many diseases. To explore this further, we evaluated the relationships between the -617C/A (rs6721961) polymorphisms within the NRF2 promoter and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in Chinese Han patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
A total of 883 subjects with T2DM (500 without and 383 with DN) were enrolled in this study. Multivariable linear regression models were carried out to assess the association of DN with the -617C/A (rs6721961) polymorphisms.
The AA genotype frequencies in patients with DN were significantly lower than those in patients without DN (χ

The training of generalist physicians in university hospitals needs to emphasize development of their research role in order to continue improving their research capacity and their standing in academic hospitals in Japan. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to survey departments of general medicine (GM) in university hospitals in Japan to identify the research areas and themes pursued by academic generalist physicians.
The heads of the departments of GM from 71 university hospitals in Japan were enrolled. The main outcomes studied were the identification of the main research areas and themes in academic departments of GM, based on the classification of the National Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) clinical research, public health, preventive medicine, medical education, basic science, health services and safety and quality.
We received 47 of 71 replies (66.2% response rate). Clinical research was the most common area of research (62%), followed by public health and preventive medicine (14%), medical education (11%), and basic sciences (9%). Only one department identified health services and safety and quality as a research area (2%). There was marked variability in research areas across the different departments, with 23% of the research targeting the highest specialties, particularly organ-specific research in the fields of gastroenterology, cardiology, immunology, neurology, metabolic endocrinology, and hematology-oncology.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential pathogenic mechanisms of post-intracerebral hemorrhage depression.
Profiles of gene expression in brain tissue of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or depression were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for the two diseases separately. With these DEGs, we conducted an enrichment analysis based on Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) as well as cross-talk analysis, then we identified hub bridge genes using integrated bridge landscape analysis.
We found 131 DEGs for interaction between ICH and depression. In the enrichment analysis, we found 55 GO terms and KEGG pathways involving interacting genes of ICH and depression, and 10 GO terms and 10 KEGG pathways most significantly related to cross-talk between ICH and depression. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) has emerged as a therapeutic target in many diseases. To explore this further, we evaluated the relationships between the -617C/A (rs6721961) polymorphisms within the NRF2 promoter and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in Chinese Han patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 883 subjects with T2DM (500 without and 383 with DN) were enrolled in this study. Multivariable linear regression models were carried out to assess the association of DN with the -617C/A (rs6721961) polymorphisms. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to survey departments of general medicine (GM) in university hospitals in Japan to identify the research areas and themes pursued by academic generalist physicians. The heads of the departments of GM from 71 university hospitals in Japan were enrolled. The main outcomes studied were the identification of the main research areas and themes in academic departments of GM, based on the classification of the National Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) clinical research, public health, preventive medicine, medical education, basic science, health services and safety and quality. We received 47 of 71 replies (66.2% response rate). Clinical research was the most common area of research (62%), followed by public health and preventive medicine (14%), medical education (11%), and basic sciences (9%). Only one department identified health services and safety and quality as a research area (2%). Profiles of gene expression in brain tissue of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or depression were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for the two diseases separately. With these DEGs, we conducted an enrichment analysis based on Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) as well as cross-talk analysis, then we identified hub bridge genes using integrated bridge landscape analysis. A gradual decrease in the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) values was observed across Akoko Edo and Ijero Ekiti with a corresponding change in the highest NDVI values while Ilesa witnessed a higher NDVI value in 2017 relative to the previous years. The majority of the normalised difference water index (NDWI) values for 2017 appear to be above 0 in all the host communities. Mean land surface temperature (LST) values are in the order 24.63 °C (1986) less then 25.26 °C (2002) less then 26.32 °C (2017) for Ijero Ekiti study area while mean LST values are in the order 24.30 °C (1986) less then 24.46 °C (2002) less then 25.82 °C (2017) in Ilesa study area. Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) seemed a more reliable indicator as the index was able to enhance the water surfaces more clearly as indicated in the case of Akoko Edo study area. The fish yield increased significantly (p less then 0.05) from 87.11 to 379.13 kg/ha/year due to stocking indicating significant impact on fish production. The relationships between area, stocking density, and fish yield of reservoirs were also assessed. Stocking had a significant positive impact on fish yield (t test, p less then 0.05). The important water quality parameters were also studied to have a conspicuous picture of eco-hydrological characteristics of these selected small reservoirs. The study forms a baseline for the small tropical reservoir fisheries of Central India (Chhattisgarh state) and suggests regional strategies for sustainable fisheries enhancement and management, employment generation, and nutritional security of a large number of fish-eating population.The increasing use of nanoparticles and their many applications increases the likelihood of their presence in the environment. At 15 and 30 mg/L concentrations of the nanoparticles, numbers of cells, specific growth, biomass, and pigments showed a significant boost compared to the mentioned parameters of the control treatment. Measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA) showed that this parameter was directly related to the increase in the concentration of nanoparticles. At 60 mg/L of the nanoparticles, the MDA level was higher than the control and other treatments. This increase reflects the destructive effect of the nanoparticles on algal cells. The introduced model is implemented in light of time windows as a trustworthy solution for monitoring the dynamic logistics process and attaining instantaneous information on the basis of the green traffic situation and travel duration, which is commonly known by the Logit function.

This study aimed to explore young adult donors' experiences of living donor liver transplantation.
A phenomenological research method was used. The participants were two women and six men. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews from November 25th, 2019 to June 10th, 2020 and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method.
Five theme clusters extracted from the young adult donors' experiences were painful decision of a liver donation, the agony of both mind and body that overpowers youth, the bitter and bare face of reality that a young donor encounters, feeling the power of love that fills up the space of the organ removed, and liver donation becoming priming water for maturity.
The results of this study provide a deeper understanding of the lives of young adult donors who have experienced unexpected difficulties as well as self growth from the donation. It is expected that the results can be of use for developing and applying customized nursing interventions for management before and after liver donation among young adult donors.

Ten participants were recruited through a website used by the visually impaired from February to March 2020. Data were collected through two focus group interviews conducted in June 2020; each group consisted of five participants. All interviews were recorded with the consent of the participants and transcribed verbatim. The transcribed data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Seven categories were as follows; a two-faced, lifelong companion, an unprepared encounter, struggle to live, love-hate relationship with family, strategies to adapt, lessening attention to self-management, the desire to learn properly.
It can be concluded that the visually impaired have fewer opportunities for receiving diabetes self-management education than general diabetic patients. Consequently, plans to improve the education available to such patients are required. Additionally, psychological counseling and diabetes education for patients' families are necessary, and improving the perception of medical workers regarding the visually impaired will be prove useful.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing health behavior compliance in adult patients with moyamoya.

The hierarchical multiple regression analysis demonstrated that self-efficacy (β = .60,

= .005) affected the health behavior of adults with moyamoya disease. These 3 variables explained 62.0% of the variance of health behavior compliance, and the most influential factor was self-efficacy.
Based on the results of this study, it concludes that nursing interventions should be focused on self-efficacy and social support to improve health behavior compliance with adult patients diagnosed with moyamoya disease. For that, various strategies to enhance self-efficacy and social support should be developed and actively applied in the clinical setting for adult moyamoya patients.

After crawling online news articles and posts on social networking sites before and after policy enforcement with particulate matter as keywords, we conducted topic and semantic network analysis using TEXTOM, R, and UCINET 6.
In topic analysis, behavior tips was the common main topic in both media before and after the policy enforcement. After the policy enforcement, influence on health disappeared from the main topics due to increased reports about reduction measures and government in mass media, whereas influence on health appeared as the main topic in social media. In topic analysis, behavior tips was the common main topic in both media before and after the policy enforcement. After the policy enforcement, influence on health disappeared from the main topics due to increased reports about reduction measures and government in mass media, whereas influence on health appeared as the main topic in social media. In garden warblers, birds with high energy stores were more prone to sleep during the day, while this condition-dependent sleep pattern was not present in whitethroats. In both species, birds with low energy stores were more likely to sleep with their head tucked in the feathers during nocturnal sleep. Moreover, we found a positive correlation between food intake and the extent of energy reserves in garden warblers, but not in whitethroats.

There was an increased in basketball ankle injuries following 2011-2012 season. Football and ice hockey reported the greatest concussion proportion incidence, with football demonstrating an increase in concussions over time, and a substantial increase in concussions from the 2014 to 2015 season. These publicly extracted data and findings can be used as a shared resource for professional baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey for future individual and across sport collaborations concerning resource allocation and decision making in order to improve player health.Current research implicates pre- and probiotic supplementation as a potential tool for improving symptomology in physical and mental ailments, which makes it an attractive concept for clinicians and consumers alike. Here we focus on the transitional period of late adolescence and early adulthood during which effective interventions, such as nutritional supplementation to influence the gut microbiota, have the potential to offset health-related costs in later life. We examined multiple indices of mood and well-being in 64 healthy females in a 4-week double blind, placebo controlled galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) prebiotic supplement intervention and obtained stool samples at baseline and follow-up for gut microbiota sequencing and analyses. We report effects of the GOS intervention on self-reported high trait anxiety, attentional bias, and bacterial abundance, suggesting that dietary supplementation with a GOS prebiotic may improve indices of pre-clinical anxiety. Gut microbiota research has captured the imagination of the scientific and lay community alike, yet we are now at a stage where this early enthusiasm will need to be met with rigorous research in humans. Procedures were performed under topical anaesthesia without the presence of a nurse anaesthesiologist or anaesthesiologist, the patient had not fasted, and no peripheral venous line was placed. Only heart rate and oxygen saturation were monitored intraoperatively with pulse oximetry. Incidence and nature of intraoperative adverse events and surgical complications were recorded. Patient satisfaction was assessed using the Iowa Satisfaction with Anaesthesia Scale (ISAS). In total, 651 cataract surgeries were performed among which 614 (94.3%) were uneventful. Thirty (4.6%) intraoperative adverse events and 8 (1.2%) surgical complications were recorded. All surgeries were successfully completed. No medical emergency team intervention or hospital admittance was encountered. The mean ISAS score was 5.7/6, indicating high patient satisfaction. Cataract surgery in an ambulatory cataract surgery centre without perioperative anaesthesia care is a safe procedure with high patient satisfaction for screened patients. We hypothesize epigenetic mechanisms also play a key role in T-PLL pathogenesis. To systematically test this hypothesis, we generated genome-wide maps of regulatory regions using H3K4me3 and H3K27ac ChIP-seq, as well as RNA-seq data in both T-PLL patients and healthy individuals. We found that genes down-regulated in T-PLL are mainly associated with defense response, immune system or adaptive immune response, while up-regulated genes are enriched in developmental process, as well as WNT signaling pathway with crucial roles in cell fate decision. In particular, our analysis revealed a global alteration of regulatory landscape in T-PLL, with differential peaks highly enriched for binding motifs of immune related transcription factors, supporting the epigenetic regulation of oncogenes and genes involved in DNA damage response and T-cell activation. Together, our work reveals a causal role of epigenetic dysregulation in T-PLL.

MV therapy can be an effective nonpharmaceutical intervention in the clinical to relieve children's postoperative pain after cardiothoracic surgery.Human astrovirus (HAstV) is one of the most common causative agents of acute gastroenteritis in children with an infection rate estimated to range from 2% to 9% worldwide. This study was aimed at investigating the molecular and clinical epidemiological features of human astrovirus infections in children under 5 years old with acute gastroenteritis in Shandong province, China from July 2017 to June 2018. In total, 376 fecal samples and the corresponding clinical information were collected and analyzed. HAstV infections were detected in all age groups with an overall positive rate of 8.51%. In addition to acute diarrhea, the main clinical manifestations were fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dehydration, in which fever was the most common complication. Infections could be seen throughout the year with a peak in the colder season. Four genotypes were detected in which HAstV-1 was the most prevalent genotype with a prevalence of 78.12%, followed by HAstV-5 (9.38%), MLB-1 (9.38%), and MLB-2 (3.12%). HAstV-1 strains were classified as lineage 1a, 1b, and 1d, in which lineage 1a strains were the most prevalent followed by lineage 1b and lineage 1d strains. All HAstV-5 strains were classified as lineage 5b and no other lineages were detected. The results showed that HAstV infection was an important cause of acute gastroenteritis among children under 5 years old in Shandong province. The fourth patient, who had oral and ocular disease, also achieved CR. In addition, we reviewed 143 cases of MMP treated with RTX reported in the literature to date. Of these, 120 had late observation endpoints, of whom 81 (67.5%) achieved CR, 24 (20%) received partial remission and 15 (12.5%) had no remission. Based on this study, the presence of laryngeal MMP seems to predict refractoriness to RTX treatment. Phantom experiments showed excellent agreement between sponge wet weight and imaging-derived water density. Breath-hold (13 seconds) and free-breathing (~2 minutes) Yarnball acquisitions in volunteers (2.5-mm isotropic resolution) had negligible artifacts and good lung parenchyma SNR (>10). Whole-lung average relative lung water density values with fully automated analysis were 28.2 ± 1.9% and 28.6 ± 1.8% for breath-hold and free-breathing acquisitions, respectively, with good test-retest reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.86 and 0.95, respectively).

This study was aimed at investigating the molecular and clinical epidemiological features of human astrovirus infections in children under 5 years old with acute gastroenteritis in Shandong province, China from July 2017 to June 2018. In total, 376 fecal samples and the corresponding clinical information were collected and analyzed. HAstV infections were detected in all age groups with an overall positive rate of 8.51%. In addition to acute diarrhea, the main clinical manifestations were fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dehydration, in which fever was the most common complication. Infections could be seen throughout the year with a peak in the colder season. Four genotypes were detected in which HAstV-1 was the most prevalent genotype with a prevalence of 78.12%, followed by HAstV-5 (9.38%), MLB-1 (9.38%), and MLB-2 (3.12%). HAstV-1 strains were classified as lineage 1a, 1b, and 1d, in which lineage 1a strains were the most prevalent followed by lineage 1b and lineage 1d strains. All HAstV-5 strains were classified as lineage 5b and no other lineages were detected. The results showed that HAstV infection was an important cause of acute gastroenteritis among children under 5 years old in Shandong province. The aim of this study was to investigate the detailed role and molecular mechanism of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) taurine upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) in cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy was established by transverse abdominal aortic constriction (TAC) in vivo or angiotensin II (Ang II) treatment in vitro. Levels of lncRNA TUG1, miR-497 and myocyte enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C) mRNA were assessed by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR). Western blot assay was performed to determine the expression of MEF2C protein. The endogenous interactions among TUG1, miR-497 and MEF2C were confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation assays. Our data indicated that TUG1 was upregulated and miR-497 was downregulated in the TAC rat model and Ang II-induced cardiomyocytes. TUG1 knockdown or miR-497 overexpression alleviated the hypertrophy induced by Ang II in cardiomyocytes. Moreover, TUG1 acted as a sponge of miR-497, and MEF2C was directly targeted and repressed by miR-497. miR-497 overexpression mediated the protective role of TUG1 knockdown in Ang II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. MEF2C was a functional target of miR-497 in regulating Ang II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In addition, TUG1 regulated MEF2C expression through sponging miR-497. Knockdown of TUG1 rescued Ang II-induced hypertrophy in cardiomyocytes at least partly through targeting the miR-497/MEF2C axis, highlighting a novel promising therapeutic target for cardiac hypertrophy treatment.

This study sought evidence of a neuroprotective effect of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) to treat neuropathic pain in a chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat model. A total of 48 rats were randomly divided into sham, CCI, or CCI + ALA groups. Mechanical and thermal nociceptive thresholds were evaluated as behavioral assessments. Dorsal root ganglia cells were assessed morphologically with hematoxylin and eosin staining and for apoptosis with P53 immunohistochemical staining. Compared with the sham group, the CCI group had a shorter paw withdrawal threshold and paw withdrawal latency, abnormal morphologic manifestations, and increased numbers of satellite glial cells and P53+ cells. These changes were significantly reversed by treatment with ALA. Our study indicates neuroprotective effects of ALA on chronic neuropathic pain in a CCI rat model. These samples were collected on three dates from the control soil without SS and from the soil with the addition of SS at the concentrations of 5 and 15 t ha-1. Fungal alpha diversity in the rhizosphere of barley was affected by SS differently than in barley roots. In addition, principal component analysis and cluster analysis revealed that fungal communities were strongly influenced by the SS addition into the soil, sample type, and the sampling date. This approach was complemented by an evaluation of the basic parameters of barley production and the response of these parameters to the presence of SS in the soil. The hemangioma in the ventricle, false vocal fold, and paraglottic space was treated by potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser photocoagulation. Pathological examination confirmed hemangioma. There has been no recurrence during 18 months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The treatment of pharyngolaryngeal hemangiomas is challenging. It is important to select treatment options considering the characteristics of the treatments and the anatomical and functional relationship between the hemangioma and the surrounding structures. Single-session KTP laser photocoagulation combined with surgical resection using an ultrasonic scalpel via a transoral approach according to anatomic site could be an effective treatment for pharyngolaryngeal hemangioma.BACKGROUND Orthotopic liver transplantation has become the procedure of choice for end-stage liver disease. There are 3 commonly used methods of vena cava anastomosis. Here, we report a new technique for native hepatectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The data of 12 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation using a new surgical technique were retrospectively collected for analysis. The new separation and reconstruction surgical technique mainly involved the second portal isolation and hepatectomy that followed. We performed recipient liver resection without the occlusion of the inferior vena cava, which was then followed by classic, piggyback, modified piggyback, or side-to-side orthotopic liver transplantation. The graft function index and complications were collected after transplantation. RESULTS The length of the anhepatic phase was 30.92±9.1 min. Alanine transaminase (ALT) levels were 138 to 2027 U/L, with a median of 361.5 U/L. The ALT levels of all patients gradually decreased to normal levels 7 to 10 days after surgery. Only 2 recipients had elevated levels of ALT higher than 1000 U/L. Four of 12 patients did not require red blood cell transfusion during surgery. There are 3 commonly used methods of vena cava anastomosis. Here, we report a new technique for native hepatectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The data of 12 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation using a new surgical technique were retrospectively collected for analysis. The new separation and reconstruction surgical technique mainly involved the second portal isolation and hepatectomy that followed. We performed recipient liver resection without the occlusion of the inferior vena cava, which was then followed by classic, piggyback, modified piggyback, or side-to-side orthotopic liver transplantation. The graft function index and complications were collected after transplantation. RESULTS The length of the anhepatic phase was 30.92±9.1 min. Alanine transaminase (ALT) levels were 138 to 2027 U/L, with a median of 361.5 U/L. The ALT levels of all patients gradually decreased to normal levels 7 to 10 days after surgery. Only 2 recipients had elevated levels of ALT higher than 1000 U/L. Four of 12 patients did not require red blood cell transfusion during surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the administration of Vitamins C and E on serum superoxide dismutase (***), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), testosterone, and cortisol activity in albino rats with chronic variable stress (CVS).
Twenty albino rats were randomly assigned into four treatment groups C was administered normal saline; T1 was administered Vitamins C and E; T2 was only induced CVS; and T3 was induced CVS followed by Vitamins C and E administration. All treatments were applied for 4 weeks, respectively. Furthermore, 5 mL of blood samples were collected intracardially. Body weight data were collected for the initial and final weights. From serum samples, ***, GPx, and CAT were measured using the enzymol method; MDA was measured using the high-performance liquid chromatography method; and testosterone and cortisol were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. All variables were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance followed by the Duncan test (p<0.05).
Our findings showed that the T1 and T3 groups significantly decreased (p<0.001) compared to T2 in the following parameters ***, MDA, GPx, and cortisol. Obstructive urolithiasis is one of the major health problems in livestock animals, mainly in young calves. The present study was designed first to investigate the changes in the serum levels of Vitamins A and D in buffalo calves (
) with obstructive urolithiasis and second to investigate the efficacy of tube cystostomy technique in management of such condition.
One hundred and forty-nine buffalo calves of variable ages ranged from 3 to 7 months with a history of retained urine were examined clinically and ultrasonographically. Then, they were subjected to surgical treatment using the tube cystostomy technique. The serum levels of Vitamins A and D were investigated in retained urine calves in addition to 10 clinically healthy calves of the same age used as a control group.
Based on clinical and ultrasonographic findings, the calves were diagnosed as obstructive urolithiasis with intact bladder (n=64 calves) or with bladder rupture (n=85 calves) with the peak incidence in winter months. Tube cystostomy was an efficient and quick surgical technique for the management of such condition and 95.3% of calves returned their normal urination within 7-14 days after surgery. Significant hypovitaminoses A and D were found between retained urine calves and control ones (p= 0.01 and 0.002, respectively).

Therefore, we present the first data set of strongly labeled bird sound soundscape recordings under free use license. These data were collected in the Northeastern United States at Powdermill Nature Reserve, Rector, Pennsylvania, USA. Recordings encompass 385 minutes of dawn chorus recordings collected by autonomous acoustic recorders between the months of April through July 2018. Recordings were collected in continuous bouts on four days during the study period and contain 48 species and 16,052 annotations. Applications of this data set may be numerous and include the training, validation, and testing of certain advanced machine-learning models that detect or classify bird sounds. The relative contribution of fungi and bacteria to decomposition is thought to impact biogeochemical cycling at the ecosystem scale, whereby bacterially dominated decomposition supports the fast turnover of easily available substrates, whereas fungal-dominated decomposition leads to the slower turnover of more complex OM. However, empirical support for this is lacking. We used soils from a detritus input and removal treatment experiment in an old-growth coniferous forest, where above- and belowground litter inputs have been manipulated for 20 yr. These manipulations have generated variation in OM quality, as defined by energetic content and proxied as respiration per g soil organic matter (SOM) and the δ13 C signature in respired CO2 and microbial PLFAs. Respiration per g SOM reflects the availability and lability of C substrate to microorganisms, and the δ13 C signature indicates whether te of selective microbial N-mining. Consistent with the δ13 C data, this reinforces evidence for the use of more microbially processed OM with a lower C/N ratio, rather than plant-derived OM. These results challenge the widely held assumption that microorganisms favor high-quality C sources and suggest that there is a trade-off in OM use that may be related to the growth-limiting factor for microorganisms in the ecosystem.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression and contribute to the development of cancer. They have been shown to be stable in tissue samples and may be promising diagnostic biomarkers for endometrial cancer.
A retrospective cohort study of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer between January 2017 and December 2017 was performed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples were obtained from patients with endometrial cancer and healthy women. MicroRNA was isolated and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect expression levels of miRNAs.
A total of 76 women were included 36 endometrial cancer patients, 40 healthy controls. A distinct panel of miR-200a, miR-200b, miR-200c, miR-205, and miR-182 showed an area under the curve of 0.958, sensitivity 92%, specificity 89%, positive predictive value of 89% (95% CI 82%-94%) and negative predictive value of 91% (95% CI 85%-96%) in diagnosing endometrial cancer. High miR-182 expression levels were significantly related to high-grade endometrioid tumors compared with low-grade tumors.

Retained placenta is a common complication of pregnancy affecting 1% to 6% of all births. If a retained placenta is left untreated, spontaneous delivery of the placenta may occur, but there is a high risk of bleeding and infection. Manual removal of the placenta (MROP) in an operating theatre under anaesthetic is the usual treatment, but is invasive and may have complications. An effective non-surgical alternative for retained placenta would potentially reduce the physical and psychological trauma of the procedure, and costs. It could also be lifesaving by providing a therapy for settings without easy access to modern operating theatres or anaesthetics. A retrospective review was undertaken for patients who underwent a planned open single-stage complex ventral hernia repair with a single unit of PGATMC biosynthetic mesh between May 2013 and August 2017. Data on outcome variables were recorded and quality of life assessed using the Short Form-12 (SF-12) instrument.
Overall, 56 patients underwent abdominal wall reconstruction for complex ventral hernias. All meshes were placed in the retrorectus position. Some 39% underwent component separation. The majority of patients (86%, n = 48) had high risk (grade 2 or 3) hernias according to the Ventral Hernia Working Group classification. Overall hernia recurrence rate was 3.
Therefore, we present the first data set of strongly labeled bird sound soundscape recordings under free use license. These data were collected in the Northeastern United States at Powdermill Nature Reserve, Rector, Pennsylvania, USA. Recordings encompass 385 minutes of dawn chorus recordings collected by autonomous acoustic recorders between the months of April through July 2018. Recordings were collected in continuous bouts on four days during the study period and contain 48 species and 16,052 annotations. Applications of this data set may be numerous and include the training, validation, and testing of certain advanced machine-learning models that detect or classify bird sounds. The relative contribution of fungi and bacteria to decomposition is thought to impact biogeochemical cycling at the ecosystem scale, whereby bacterially dominated decomposition supports the fast turnover of easily available substrates, whereas fungal-dominated decomposition leads to the slower turnover of more complex OM. However, empirical support for this is lacking. We used soils from a detritus input and removal treatment experiment in an old-growth coniferous forest, where above- and belowground litter inputs have been manipulated for 20 yr. These manipulations have generated variation in OM quality, as defined by energetic content and proxied as respiration per g soil organic matter (SOM) and the δ13 C signature in respired CO2 and microbial PLFAs. Respiration per g SOM reflects the availability and lability of C substrate to microorganisms, and the δ13 C signature indicates whether te of selective microbial N-mining. Consistent with the δ13 C data, this reinforces evidence for the use of more microbially processed OM with a lower C/N ratio, rather than plant-derived OM. These results challenge the widely held assumption that microorganisms favor high-quality C sources and suggest that there is a trade-off in OM use that may be related to the growth-limiting factor for microorganisms in the ecosystem. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression and contribute to the development of cancer. They have been shown to be stable in tissue samples and may be promising diagnostic biomarkers for endometrial cancer. A retrospective cohort study of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer between January 2017 and December 2017 was performed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples were obtained from patients with endometrial cancer and healthy women. MicroRNA was isolated and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect expression levels of miRNAs. A total of 76 women were included 36 endometrial cancer patients, 40 healthy controls. A distinct panel of miR-200a, miR-200b, miR-200c, miR-205, and miR-182 showed an area under the curve of 0.958, sensitivity 92%, specificity 89%, positive predictive value of 89% (95% CI 82%-94%) and negative predictive value of 91% (95% CI 85%-96%) in diagnosing endometrial cancer. High miR-182 expression levels were significantly related to high-grade endometrioid tumors compared with low-grade tumors. We demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy of miRNA for detecting endometrial cancer. In addition, miRNA contributed to an improvement in distinguishing between high-grade and low-grade endometrioid tumors. Retained placenta is a common complication of pregnancy affecting 1% to 6% of all births. If a retained placenta is left untreated, spontaneous delivery of the placenta may occur, but there is a high risk of bleeding and infection. Manual removal of the placenta (MROP) in an operating theatre under anaesthetic is the usual treatment, but is invasive and may have complications. An effective non-surgical alternative for retained placenta would potentially reduce the physical and psychological trauma of the procedure, and costs.
