  • To compare tooth movement rate and histological responses with three different force magnitude designs under osteoperforation in rabbit models.

    48 rabbits were divided into three groups Group A, Group B, and Group C, with traction force of 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, respectively. Osteoperforation was performed at the mesial of the right mandibular first premolar, the left side was not affected. One mini-screw was inserted into bones between two central incisors. Coil springs were fixed to the first premolars and the mini-screw. Tooth movement distance was calculated, and immunohistochemical staining of PCNA, OCN, VEGF, and TGF-β1 was analyzed.

    The tooth movement distance on the surgical side was larger than the control side in all groups (P<0.01). No significant intergroup difference was observed for the surgical side in tooth movement distance among the three groups (P>0.05). For the control side, tooth movement distance in Group A was significantly smaller than Groups B and C (P<0.001); no significant difference in tooth movement distance between Group B and Group C was observed (P>0.05). On the tension area of the moving premolar, labeling of PCNA, OCN, VEGF and TGF-β1 were confirmed in alveolar bone and periodontal ligament in all groups. Treatment-induced morphological changes of the dentin surfaces were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to find parameters showing optimal dentin tubule occluding efficacy. To further verify the safety of these parameters (0.5 W, 167 J/cm2), intrapulpal temperature changes were recorded during laser irradiation, and morphological alterations of the dental pulp tissue were observed with an upright microscope.

Therefore, a study was conducted to understand the level of awareness attitude and practice among the residents of Makaland towards CL and the disease vectors. This study adopted a cross-sectional approach with a total of 400 respondents (n=93 rural and n= 307 urban). Overall, the population in Malakand region (61.2%) were well-informed in the role of sand fly in transmitting diseases, but most lack knowledge on the vector's behavior and almost a quarter (24.5%) were unable to provide knowledge on proper control measures. Alarmingly, the practice and attitudes of the general population was not satisfactory as close to half (49.8%) of the population did adopt any control method. This study calls for increase in awareness through health education campaign to reduce the risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis outbreaks in the future.As a result of biodiversity and ecosystem service losses associated with biological invasions, there has been growing interest in basic and applied research on invasive species aiming to improve management strategies. Tradescantia zebrina is a herbaceous species increasingly reported as invasive in the understory of disturbed forest ecosystems. In this study, we assess the effect of spatial and seasonal variation on biological attributes of this species in the Atlantic Forest. To this end, we measured attributes of T. zebrina associated with plant growth and stress in the four seasons at the forest edge and in the forest interior of invaded sites in the Iguaçu National Park, Southern Brazil. The invasive plant had higher growth at the forest edge than in the forest interior and lower leaf asymmetry and herbivory in the winter than in the summer. Our findings suggest that the forest edge environment favours the growth of T. zebrina. This invasive species is highly competitive in the understory of semi-deciduous seasonal forests all over the year.

    Odontoid fracture is a common injury in the upper cervical spine that can sometimes be managed by anterior odontoid screw fixation.

    We report the first case of iatrogenic postero-inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) injury while performing anterior odontoid screw fixation for a type II odontoid fracture in a 22-year-old man. Fisher grade 4 subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm formation was managed by the endovascular neuroradiologist. Odontoid fracture was then managed posteriorly using Harm's technique. Postoperative 12-month follow-up revealed good clinical and radiological results. CT scan showed fusion. Complete exclusion of the pseudo aneurysm with a mild stroke in the inferior left cerebellar hemisphere were noted on the MRI. There were no cerebellar ataxia or swallowing disorders.

    To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of iatrogenic PICA injury in anterior odontoid screw fixation. The patient was well managed in our institution within a multidisciplinary team. We recommend that surgical management of odontoid fractures should be performed in expert centres.

However, such training is possible through educational opportunities and the ongoing digital revolution. The aim is to present the current state of neurosurgery training and education methods indicating strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. The thoughts, comments and suggestions of the authors are based on their academic experiences, training missions around the world and particularly in low- and middle-income countries by pointing out the French experience. The learning must be interactive and programmed over time, integrating varied courses and activities. Virtual reality and neurosurgical simulation need to be developed. The content of the teaching including e-learning must be evidence-based and peer-reviewed. Pedagogical training of trainers is fundamental. It is critical to evaluate the training under real working conditions. The optimization of human resources should create economies of scale that would attenuate the financial burden. The commitment of the teams, tutoring are success factors.
    Primary intracranial pure endodermal sinus tumor (EST) is a rare malignant nongerminomatous germ cell tumor. There is still lack of knowledge about the treatment and prognosis.

    We studied 6 cases of primary intracranial pure EST patients in Beijing Tiantan Hospital from June 2009 to June 2015. A comprehensive literature search was performed on Pubmed's electronic database using the search terms "primary intracranial endodermal sinus tumor", "primary intracranial yolk sac tumor" and "malignant germ cell tumor". Survival rates based on age, gender, tumor location, treatment, resection degree and metastatis were collected and analyzed.

    Several scientific papers report clinical symptoms, indications, complications and outcomes of brainstem cavernous malformation (****) surgery without reporting on the occurrence of postoperative Holmes tremor (HT). Our purpose is to report our experience with HT in a monocentric series of resected brainstem cavernomas.

    We reviewed all the **** surgical records between 2002 and 2018 at Saint-Luc University Hospital's Department of Neurosurgery, Brussels and selected patients developing HT postoperatively. Patients' demographics, symptoms, pre- and postoperative imaging, recurrence and complications were analysed. A PubMed literature review was performed to compare our results with those in the existing literature.

    In a total series of 18 resected ****, 5 patients 1 male and 4 females, with a median age of 51 years (range 29-59 years), developed HT. The median preoperative mRS score was 2 (range 1-4). GTR was achieved in all patients without surgery-related death. **** were located in the mesencephalon in 4 patients (80%) who developed HT. Tremor was noticed between ten days and one year after surgery. One patient saw significant improvements to the point of stopping treatment. The median follow-up period was 2 years (range 1-14 years). At the last follow-up, 40% of our patients showed a worse mRS score, 40% stayed unchanged, and 20% improved.

However, such new avenues of multiplexed, cell-specific investigation raise new technical issues one must ensure that both the viral vectors and their transgene payloads do not overlap with each other in both an anatomical and a functional sense. This review describes benefits and issues regarding the use of viral vectors to analyse the function of neural circuits and provides a resource for the design and implementation of such multiplexing experiments.

  • The shortage of available donor lungs is a continuing clinical problem. Lobar lung transplant and the extension of donor lung criteria may expand the pool of donor lungs. We here report a case of lobar lung transplant from a marginal deceased donor with bronchiectasis and fibrosis at the left upper lobe and a history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis. Our experience with this case suggests that a lobar lung transplant can be considered not only for size mismatches but also for use of locally damaged lungs. In addition, lungs from a donor who received treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis may be feasible for transplant with chemoprophylaxis for latent tuberculosis infection. Our current case indicates one possible option to overcome the persistent shortage of available donor lungs.
    The steatosis of graft liver is an important factor in liver transplant that determines the graft function in the recipient and the recovery of the remnant liver in the living donor. We analyzed the data of living donors from our center to evaluate whether magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy can replace liver biopsy.

    From May 2010 to May 2019, data from a total of 239 living donors was collected. There were 84 patients who had no magnetic resonance imaging or magnetic resonance spectroscopy data, and they were excluded. The result of preoperative liver biopsy was compared with preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy data. The steatosis was defined by the degree of macrosteatosis.

Open-ended questions explored perspectives, attitudes and men's understanding of contraception, family size, decision making on family planning and general views on contraceptive use. Thematic content analysis was used. Findings show that men in Wajir and Lamu held similar viewpoints of family planning as a foreign or western idea and associated family planning with ill health and promiscuity.
    The shortage of available donor lungs is a continuing clinical problem. Lobar lung transplant and the extension of donor lung criteria may expand the pool of donor lungs. We here report a case of lobar lung transplant from a marginal deceased donor with bronchiectasis and fibrosis at the left upper lobe and a history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis. Our experience with this case suggests that a lobar lung transplant can be considered not only for size mismatches but also for use of locally damaged lungs. In addition, lungs from a donor who received treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis may be feasible for transplant with chemoprophylaxis for latent tuberculosis infection. Our current case indicates one possible option to overcome the persistent shortage of available donor lungs. The steatosis of graft liver is an important factor in liver transplant that determines the graft function in the recipient and the recovery of the remnant liver in the living donor. We analyzed the data of living donors from our center to evaluate whether magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy can replace liver biopsy. From May 2010 to May 2019, data from a total of 239 living donors was collected. There were 84 patients who had no magnetic resonance imaging or magnetic resonance spectroscopy data, and they were excluded.     The final measure consists of seven items that assess physician perspectives on various components of SDM use that may present as barriers in practice. During pilot testing, the majority of physicians expressed positive opinions about the overall concept of SDM, yet were less comfortable acting on informed patient choices when there was known incongruence with their own recommendations.

    Providing a second opinion (SO) in oncology is complex, and communication during SOs remains poorly understood. This study aimed to systematically observe how patients and oncologists communicate about SO-specific topics (i.e., patient motivation, the referring oncologist, treatment transfer/****-referral), and how such communication affects patient satisfaction.

    A prospective mixed-methods study of cancer patients seeking a SO (N=69) and consulting oncologists was conducted. Before the SO, patients reported their expected place of future treatment. Following the SO, patients' and oncologists' satisfaction was assessed. All SOs were audio-recorded. Absolute and relative duration of SO-specific talk were calculated and specific events (e.g., questions/utterances) were coded (incl. valence, explicitness).

    SOs lasted 19-73min, of which 3.7% was spent discussing motivations. Oncologists rarely explored patients' motivations. Talk about referring oncologists (12.5% of consultation) was mostly critical by patients (M=43.0%), but positive/confirming by consulting oncologists (M=73.5%). Although 22.2% of patients expected a treatment transfer, this topic (3.3% of consultation time) was rarely explicitly discussed. Patients who were referred **** were significantly less satisfied (d=0.85).

It is difficult to identify cardiac cephalalgia and link it to coronary artery disease because these patients present with only a headache and no typical symptoms of angina, such as chest pain, radiating pain, or chest tightness. Currently, the diagnostic value of cardiac cephalalgia in acute myocardial infarction is still under debate. We here report a case of cardiac cephalalgia. An 83-year-old woman with a severe headache lasting 6 h was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. ST elevation and severe stenosis of the right coronary artery were observed. Passage of the guide wire and radiocontrast agent increased the intensity of the headache, which disappeared once the right coronary artery was opened. As of one month into follow-up, the headache had not recurred. These observations strongly indicate a close association between cardiac cephalalgia and acute myocardial infarction, and they could help diagnose acute myocardial infarction related to headaches.

Including herd effects improved value for money for MenB vaccines. Routine infant vaccination was the most effective short-term strategy, however, adolescent strategies offered the best value for money.

  • Treatment with Palbociclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor, has demonstrated significantly improved progression-free survival in patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative, advanced breast cancer, when used in combination with letrozole or fulvestrant endocrine therapies. However, limited information exists on its cutaneous adverse effects (AE). Hence, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to investigate the prevalence and management of cutaneous AE during palbociclib and endocrine therapy.

    We included 324 adult patients with advanced breast cancer who received palbociclib between March 2016 and August 2020 within a tertiary comprehensive cancer centre. Patient demographics, details of previous and concurrent treatments, as well as treatment-related cutaneous AE were recorded from electronic records.

    The incidence of treatment-related cutaneous AE was 14.2% (46 from a total of 324 patients). The most frequent cutaneous reactions included maculopapular rash (41%), asteatosis (37%o management. More than 86% of its enzymatic activities were retained between 4 and 60 °C after 24 h of incubation.
    Treatment with Palbociclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor, has demonstrated significantly improved progression-free survival in patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative, advanced breast cancer, when used in combination with letrozole or fulvestrant endocrine therapies. However, limited information exists on its cutaneous adverse effects (AE). Hence, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to investigate the prevalence and management of cutaneous AE during palbociclib and endocrine therapy. We included 324 adult patients with advanced breast cancer who received palbociclib between March 2016 and August 2020 within a tertiary comprehensive cancer centre. Patient demographics, details of previous and concurrent treatments, as well as treatment-related cutaneous AE were recorded from electronic records. The incidence of treatment-related cutaneous AE was 14.2% (46 from a total of 324 patients). The most frequent cutaneous reactions included maculopapular rash (41%), asteatosis (37%o management. Prevailing narratives cannot account for the fact that aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs), which translate the genetic code, must collectively enforce the rules used to assemble themselves.     This historical epidemiological study aims to investigate ocular conditions in Greek refugees during the Interwar period (1926-1940) in the region of Imathia, Greece.

    The archival material encompasses 15,921 patients who were admitted to the Refugee Hospital of Veria, Imathia, Greece. Descriptive statistics were estimated.

    Twenty-two cases of ocular conditions were identified. Ten patients had anterior segment conditions, such as keratitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, conjunctivitis, epithelioma, leukoma and an operated cataract. Another patient was diagnosed with ocular trachoma. Four patients presented sympathetic ophthalmia; two additional patients suffered from ophthalmia due to syphilis. One patient was diagnosed with ocular malaria. Four cases of ocular traumas were recorded, among which an ocular burn due to gunpowder, a motorcycle accident leading to a retro-ocular hematoma, and a kick in the eye resulting in ocular trauma were notable.

Born in Hrodna district in the Russian Pale of Crescent, Einhorn had qualified and practised as a "feldsheritsa" in Russia and went to Switzerland to study medicine in 1896. Upon receiving her medical doctorate from the University of Lausanne in 1901, she became recommended as a particularly adequate candidate for the not-yet-created position of an AH official female physician in BH. After Einhorn functioned as a general practitioner for women and children in Travnik and the adjacent districts for two years, the AH public health authorities officially dismissed her due to her engagement and marriage to the AH judiciary Sigismund Bloch (1850-1927). However, she obtained a right to private practice in 1905 and was employed as a private physician in AH anti-syphilis campaigning. Struggling for her reinstatement as an official female physician in Travnik, she also strove for the accreditation of her Swiss diploma in Austria, though in vain. This study examined the independent contributions of need and predisposing factors to psychosocial care use in 9-year-old children, guided by the Gateway Provider Model. Data of the Generation R Study, a prospective cohort of children born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, were analysed using multivariable logistic regression (n = 4714). Need (quality of life, presence and type of emotional/behavioural problems) and predisposing factors (sex, ethnic background and maternal educational level) were measured using parent questionnaires at multiple time points between ages 1.5 and 9 years. Psychosocial care use was parent-reported at 9 years old (9.6% among children with Western background, 7.3% among children with non-Western background). Having emotional/behavioural problems at 5 and 9 years old was associated with more care use, while having a higher quality of life, being a girl and having a Moroccan/Turkish or other non-Western background were associated with less care use. Externalising and internalising problems, as well as several types of problems, at 5 and 9 years old were associated with psychosocial care use. Stratified analyses revealed that, in children with non-Western backgrounds, only a poorer psychosocial quality of life was associated with psychosocial care use. To conclude, girls with a Western background and children with a non-Western background were less likely to receive care compared to their peers. Children with parent-reported emotional/behavioural problems at 5 and 9 years old and decreased quality of life at 5 years old were more likely to receive psychosocial care use at 9 years old. Our findings hold relevance for preventive policies.

IMF of DMCF of the lateral diaphysis through a lateral approach can be an alternative approach for these fractures. In this study, Achromobacter sp. and Rhizobium sp., isolated from an open pond of Chlorella sorokiniana, were the microalgal growth-promotion bacteria and selected to build the bacteria-algae consortia with axenic C. sorokiniana in open cultivation systems. To examine the performance of these two artificial bacteria-algae consortia in open culture under stable cultivation conditions, the co-cultivation experiments were conducted under constant temperature and light intensity indoors. It was found that Achromobacter sp. gradually lost the dominance of the population in the co-culture and failed to promote the growth of C. sorokiniana during open cultivation. However, the Rhizobium sp. maintained its dominant population of bacterial community in open culture and could promote the growth of C. sorokiniana, with an enhancement of 13.76%. To further evaluate the effects of Rhizobium sp. on microalgae under variations of temperature and sunlight intensity conditions, the open co-cultivation experiments were built outdoors. Results showed that the growth of C. sorokiniana could rise 13.29% only when Rhizobium sp. was added to the culture continuously, and addition of bacterial solution in log-phase of microalgae could help Rhizobium sp. dominate in the bacterial community. In this way, addition of Rhizobium sp. in the log-phase of C. sorokiniana should be an effective process to be applied to open ponds cultivation.     The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 (SARS-Cov-2) and its associated illness, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has led to aglobal health crisis burdening frontline emergency departments, including orthopedic and trauma units. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the impact of the lockdown secondary to the pandemic on patient numbers and pattern of injuries at the department of traumatology of the Medical University of Vienna.

    This retrospective, descriptive study identified all patients admitted and enrolled onto the trauma registry at alevelI trauma center, between 15 March 2020 and 30 April 2020 (lockdown) and compared them to those between 15 March 2019 and 30 April 2019 (baseline). Variables collected included patient age, sex, reason for hospital admission, place of injury, death, injury severity score (ISS), as well as American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) score.

  • Colombia passed Law 100 in 1993 with the goal of providing universal health care coverage, and by 2013, over 96% of the Colombian population had health insurance coverage. However, little is known about how health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health literacy are related among those with the two most common types of health insurance coverage subsidised (those with lower incomes) and contributory (those with higher incomes) coverage.

    In the current exploratory investigation, data from adults visiting six primary care clinics in Colombia were analysed to examine the relationship between HRQoL (assessed as problems with mobility, self-care, completing usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression), demographics, the two health insurance types, and health literacy. Analyses also assessed whether, within insurance types, health literacy was related to HRQoL.

    Results showed that those with contributory health insurance coverage had greater health literacy than those with subsidised coverage, and this was accounted for by differences in education and socioeconomic status.     Stigma is a sociocultural barrier to accessing mental health services and prevents individuals with mental health disorders from receiving mental health care. The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia acknowledges that a great number of people with mental disorders do not seek medical aid due to stigma.

    Characterise the perceived stigma towards mental health among the stakeholders involved in the early implementation of the DIADA project [Detección y Atención Integral de Depresión y Abuso de Alcohol en Atención Primaria (Detection and Integrated Care for Depression and Alcohol Use in Primary Care)]. Explore whether the implementation of this model can decrease stigma. Describe the impact of the implementation on the lives of patients and medical practice.

    Eighteen stakeholders (7 patients, 5 physicians and 6 administrative staff) were interviewed and a secondary data analysis of 24 interview transcripts was conducted using a rapid analysis technique.

    The main effects of stigma towards mental health disorders included refusing medical attention, ignoring illness, shame and labelling. Half of the stakeholders reported that the implementation of mental health care in primary care could decrease stigma. All of the stakeholders said that the implementation had a positive impact.

Communication and awareness about mental health is improving, which could facilitate access to mental health treatment and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship.     The present study aims to establish a clinical cut-off for the Grandiosity dimension, using item-level evaluation procedures.

    Participants were 5,387 adults, including outpatients diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), outpatients diagnosed with other personality disorders, and adults from the community. We administered the self-reported Grandiosity scale from the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory 2 (IDCP-2). The equating procedure was applied to generate theta scores for participants who did not answer all items.

    The Wright map revealed that outpatients scored high on the latent continuum of the Grandiosity scale. Group comparison showed large effect sizes for the mean difference between patients and non-patients. The ROC curve supports a cut off at a -0.45 score in theta standardisation, which yields a high sensitivity (91%) and moderate specificity (58%). Moreover, the PPP (71%) and NPP (79%) values suggest that the scale is able to identify NPD patients in 71% of cases, and people without NPD in 79% of cases.

    The findings suggest the IDCP-2 Grandiosity scale is useful as an NPD screening tool. Possible clinical applications for the scale are described and the limitations of the study are discussed.

  • This paper presents the results of voluminous experimental investigations conducted to analyze the influence of the welding procedure on the performance of regenerated gears. Cylindrical spur gears were tested, both newly manufactured and regenerated, in two fundamentally different ways by hard facing (surfacing) with the "hard" filler metal (DUR 600-IG) and with the "soft" filler metal (EVB2CrMo) with subsequent cementation and quenching. The regeneration procedures were defined and executed, while, subsequently, the microstructure and microhardness of the hard-faced layers were established and measured, followed by checking the durability of the hard-faced teeth flanks. Finally, techno-economic analysis was performed to establish the rationality of the conducted regenerations, i.e., the costs of regenerated and newly manufactured teeth were compared. Based on the results of the conducted investigations, it was possible to establish the influence of the welding type on the performance characteristics (primarily the service life) of the regenerated gears. For individual reparatory hard facing, the procedure with the "hard" filler metal exhibited better characteristics, while for batch reparation of numerous damaged gears, the reparation with the "soft" filler metal, followed by cementation and heat treatment, might be more convenient.The antagonistic activity of fungal endophytes isolated from weeds growing in Cavendish banana farms was determined against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense TR4 (Foc TR4) causing Fusarium wilt of Cavendish banana. Forty-nine out of the total 357 fungal endophytes from the roots of weeds exhibited antagonistic activity against Foc TR4. High inhibitory activity at 79.61-99.31% based on dual culture assay was recorded in endophytes Lasiodiplodia theobromae TDC029, Trichoderma asperellum TDC075, Ceratobasidium sp. TDC037, Ceratobasidium sp. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/shp099-dihydrochloride.html TDC241, and Ceratobasidium sp. TDC474. All five endophytes were identified through DNA sequencing with 86-100% identity. In this study, astringent and non-astringent "Rojo Brillante" persimmons were dehydrated by following a natural drying method used in Asia. The drying kinetics and physico-chemical properties were analyzed for 81 days. The results indicated subsequent reductions in weight, water content, and water activity throughout the drying process, and the equatorial diameter decreased. All the employed thin-layer mathematical models were suitable for representing the drying characteristics of both products with similar behavior. The effective water diffusivity values were 5.07 × 10-11 m2 s-1 and 6.07 × 10-11 m2 s-1 for astringent and non-astringent persimmon samples, respectively. The drying treatment significantly decreased the soluble tannins content, and the astringent samples obtained similar values to those obtained for the non-astringent samples in 20 days. The external and internal flesh of the astringent fruit remained orange through the drying period, while brown coloration in the non-astringent fruit was observed after 57 drying days. Therefore, prior de-astringency treatment would not be necessary.Finding affordable and environment-friendly options to decontaminate wastewater generated with heavy metals and dyes to prevent the depletion of accessible freshwater resources is one of the indispensable challenges of the 21st century. One promising example of such adsorbents is hydrogels (HGs), which constitute a three-dimensional polymeric network of hydrophilic groups that is highly capable of adsorbing a large quantity of metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Although HGs can also be prepared from synthetic polymers, natural polymers have improved environmental benignity. Recently, cellulose-based hydrogels (CBHs) have been extensively studied owing to their high abundance, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and excellent adsorption capacity. This review emphasizes different CBH adsorbents in the context of dyes and heavy metals removal from wastewater following diverse synthesis techniques and adsorption mechanisms. This study also summarizes various process parameters necessary to optimize adsorption capacity followed by future research directions.

Ecological, psycho-social, and activity-oriented theories guided the development of theory-based intervention strategies, which were based on awareness, skills and addressing barriers of meaningful activity.

    STAYING ACTIVE is grounded on theory, and service-user experiences and aims at promoting meaningful activity in mild dementia. The IM framework may be useful in the development of future psychosocial interventions for people with dementia, facilitating transparency when efficacy is evaluated.

We defined quality ANC as having six of the recommended ANC components during follow-up blood pressure measurement, urine sample test, blood sample test, provision of iron supplements, drug for intestinal parasite and tetanus toxoid injections. We used the concentration index (CCI) to examine inequalities within and across countries. We fitted a multilevel regression model to assess the predictors of inequalities in the contact and content of ANC. This study included 87 068 women; among those 54.4% (n = 47 387) had four or more ANC contacts, but only 21% (n = 15 759) reported receiving all six services. The coverage of four or more ANC and receipt of all six services was pro-rich within and across all countries. The highest inequality in four or more ANC contacts was in Ethiopia with a CCI of 0.209, while women in Burundi had the highest inequality in coverage of all six services (CCI 0.318). Higher education levels and media exposure were predictors of service uptake, while women who had unintended pregnancies were less likely to make four or more ANC contacts and receive six services. Interventions to improve access to quality ANC require rethinking the service delivery mechanisms in all countries. Moreover, ensuring equity in access to quality ANC requires tailoring service delivery modalities to address the social determinants of service uptake.Mucolipidosis IV (MLIV) is an orphan disease leading to debilitating psychomotor deficits and vision loss. Here, we showed that AAV-mediated CNS-targeted gene transfer of the human MCOLN1 gene rescued motor function and alleviated brain pathology in the MLIV mouse model. Using the AAV-PHP.b vector in symptomatic ****, we showed long-term reversal of declined motor function and significant delay of paralysis. Next, using self-complementary AAV9 clinical candidate vector, we showed that its intracerebroventricular administration in post-natal day 1 **** significantly improved motor function, myelination and reduced lysosomal storage load in the MLIV mouse brain. Based on our data and general advancements in the gene therapy field, we propose scAAV9-mediated CSF-targeted MCOLN1 gene transfer as a therapeutic strategy in MLIV.

  • The field of life sciences encompasses a myriad of disciplines that collectively provide insight toward the intrinsic framework of life. Developmental physiology is one of these disciplines that can describe the origins of life at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal level. However, organismal development is a continual process that transcends conception and progresses throughout the lifetime of an organism. In this Illumination, we discuss opportunities that secondary-level life science educators have when teaching developmental physiology through an agricultural lens. Specifically, we propose teaching about the origins of meat and milk, as a nontraditional approach for introducing developmental physiology to students. To justify this notion, we explore how novel research in livestock production focuses on meeting food demands imposed by our growing global population. In addition, we link these concepts to commonly employed standards in secondary-level science classrooms across the United States. In conclusion, the science of livestock production provides a window of opportunity for secondary-level physiology instructors to teach developmental physiology in a form that can readily adhere to institutionally employed standards.We have created a conceptual framework for the core concept of "mass balance." Unlike the previous conceptual frameworks that we have created and validated, the framework for "mass balance" is simply a description in words of the fundamental mass balance equation and the implications of the equation. We surveyed physiology faculty and asked them to rate the importance of "mass balance" as defined by the conceptual framework and also to rate the importance for their students of being able to apply the core concept to liquids, gases, solutes, and solids. Respondents indicated that "mass balance" is important and that our conceptual framework provides a useful tool for teaching and learning. We discuss several examples of how "mass balance" can be used in making sense about a variety of physiological phenomena.Syllabi are usually required by institutions of higher education and often are the first exposure that students have to a particular course. Instructors can use syllabi as a mechanism to convey important information to students. Moreover, a syllabus can be considered a tool to create inclusive biology courses by transmitting information to all students equitably. In this study, we examined 75 biology course syllabi collected from a research-intensive institution to examine what content instructors include. We reviewed the syllabi to determine the presence or absence of elements and assessed to what extent there were differences in the presence or absence of certain syllabus elements based on course level and course size. We found that instructors are most likely to include content about course expectations and least likely to include content about creating positive classroom climate on their course syllabi. Despite university requirements, many instructors did not include the university-mandated criteria and they did not include elements that could increase how inclusive students perceive the course to be. However, instructors more often included inclusive content when it was required by the university. We also found that students enrolled in upper level courses and small enrollment courses are provided with less content on their syllabi, which we would then interpret as a less inclusive syllabus. We discuss the implications of how these results may differentially impact students in these courses and how the syllabus can be a tool for creating more inclusive college biology courses.Function diagrams put the focus on physiology and physiological concepts rather than the associated anatomy. Function diagrams could potentially serve as an elaboration tool and memory aid (mnemonic) to improve learning and recall. The function diagram prototype of the gastrointestinal system can aid in the instruction of difficult gastrointestinal physiology topics using a sequential focus on fundamental gastrointestinal functions.We describe an inquiry activity that aims to develop students' ability to interpret findings that span whole body systems and so encourage the integration of knowledge. The scenario we choose was the physiological challenge posed by diarrhea and the physiological mechanisms that underpin oral rehydration therapy. Before the staff-facilitated inquiry activity, students engage with an online information resource and complete a formative, but mandatory, prelaboratory quiz. These tasks encourage students to develop some mastery of the relevant physiology before the timetabled inquiry activity. The 3-h inquiry activity is driven by a paper workbook containing data from published studies, mainly from veterinary physiology, of the various consequences of diarrhea. Figures from published data are arranged so that, initially, the impact of dehydration on a single system (the cardiovascular system) could be appreciated. Integration with other systems (respiratory and renal systems) is then introduced progressively through the activity. The exercise is designed as a team-based inquiry activity that emphasizes the value of discussion to identify appropriate features for interpretation of the data. Students are obliged to complete a postlaboratory quiz within 5 days of the inquiry activity, serving to consolidate the students' learning and provide staff with feedback on the attainment of intended learning outcomes. Marks from formative pre- and postlaboratory quizzes typically have a median mark in excess of 80% (pass mark is 50%), and qualitative feedback suggests that the majority of students recognized the value of the activity, despite simultaneously reporting that it was intellectually demanding.Guided reflective narratives facilitate deeper understanding and learning. The study was aimed at exploring the scope of guided reflective narratives on early clinical exposure, for first-year medical students, in promoting empathy. Strengths and limitations of the process of reflective narratives were also explored. First-year medical students (n = 150) were exposed to guided reflective narrative writing following each of the three "early clinical exposure" sessions integrated into a physiology curriculum. A feedback on the entire program was obtained through a semistructured questionnaire.
